[0005] ,

[0003] , ,

[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communication technologies, and more particularly, to methods and apparatuses for reducing the functionality of a user equipment (UE).

Background Art

[0002] A UE (e.g., a mobile phone, a tablet, a laptop, an internet-of-things (IoT) device, etc.) may include two or more subscriber identity modules (SIMs) and may be referred to as a multi-SIM UE.

[0003] Generally, a SIM may correspond to at least one subscription in an environment where a radio access technology (RAT) is adopted. For example, a multi-SIM UE may have a first SIM associated with a first subscription and a second SIM associated with a second subscription. In some examples, the first SIM and the second SIM may share the same hardware components, such as radio frequency (RF) components or baseband components. In some examples, the first SIM and the second SIM may be associated with different hardware components.

[0004] In some scenarios, sharing hardware components may cause temporary hardware conflicts in the UE. In the industry, technologies that facilitate the operation of multi-SIM communication devices in a communication system are desired.

Summary of the Invention

Means for Solving the Problems

[0005] One embodiment of the present disclosure provides a UE which may include a first subscriber identity module (SIM) associated with a first radio access network (RAN), a second SIM associated with a second RAN, and a processor coupled to the first and second SIMs, the processor which may be configured to receive a first instruction associated with a reduction in functionality from the first RAN and, based on the first instruction, decide whether to switch the chain to the second RAN.

[0024] In some embodiments, the request for feature reduction may be sent via a UE Assistant informational message.

[0025] In some embodiments, the method may further include the step of deciding not to switch the chain in response to the gap formed by the first RAN being sufficient to fill the second RAN, or deciding not to require the first RAN to be idle or inactive in response to the fact that switching the chain is sufficient to fill the second RAN.

[0026] In some embodiments, the method may further include receiving a response to a request for function reduction, the response indicating, via an RRC message, whether to release the SCG or one or more SCell, whether the UE can perform the requested function reduction, and whether one or more receive chains, one or more transmit chains, or one or more radio frequency chains of the UE for which the handover to the second RAN is permitted or prohibited, or whether one or more receive chains, one or more transmit chains, or one or more radio frequency chains of the UE for which the handover to the second RAN is permitted are shared between the first RAN and the second RAN, at least one of which may be indicated.

[0027] In some embodiments, the method may further include starting a timer for function reduction without response in response to transmitting a request for function reduction, and stopping the timer in response to receiving a response to the request for function reduction.

[0039] Next, some embodiments of this disclosure will be referenced in detail, with examples shown in the accompanying drawings. For ease of understanding, the embodiments may be provided under specific network architectures and new service scenarios, such as 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP®) 5G(NR) and 3GPP long-term evolution (LTE). [0040] Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of a wireless communication system 100 according to several embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0041] Referring to Figure 1, the wireless communication system 100 may include several UEs (e.g., UE110), several BS120s (e.g., BS120a, BS120b, and BS120c), several RANs (e.g., RAN121a and RAN121b), several core networks (e.g., CN130a and CN130b), and a public switched telephone network (e.g., PSTN140). The wireless communication system 100 is intended to include any number of UEs, BSs, networks, and / or network components.

[0042] The BS120 can operate based on standard protocols such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), New Radio (NR), or other suitable protocols. The BS120 may also be called an access point, access terminal, base, base unit, macrocell, node B, evolved node B (eNB), gNB, home node B, relay node, or device, or may be described using other terms used in the art. The BS120 may be any type of device configured to wirelessly interface with at least one UE (e.g., UE110) to facilitate access to one or more communication networks such as CN130a and CN130b.

[0043] A BS120 is generally part of a RAN, which may include one or more controllers communicably coupled to one or more corresponding BSs. In the context of this disclosure, “composed of a RAN” can be interpreted as “composed of a BS associated with a RAN,” and vice versa. For example, referring to Figure 1, a BS120a may be part of a RAN121a, which may also include other BSs and / or network elements (not shown), such as a base station controller (BSC), a radio network controller (RNC), and relay nodes. BS120b and BS120c may, in addition, be part of a RAN121b, which may also include other BSs and / or network elements (not shown in Figure 1). Each of BS120a, BS120b, and BS120c may be configured to transmit and / or receive wireless signals within a specific geographic area, which may be called a cell (not shown in Figure 1).

[0044] RAN121a may communicate with CN130a, and RAN121b may communicate with CN130b. RAN121a and RAN121b may employ the same or different radio access technologies (RATs). For example, RAN121a may employ evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) radio technology, and RAN121b may employ NR radio technology. For example, both RAN121a and RAN121b may employ NR radio technology. Each of CN130a and CN130b may include multiple core network components, such as a mobility management entity (MME) (not shown in Figure 1) or a mobility management function (AMF) (not shown in Figure 1). The CN can function as a gateway for the UE to access PTSN140 and / or other networks (not shown in Figure 1).

[0045] UE110 can be any type of device configured to operate and / or communicate in a wireless environment. For example, UE110 may include computing devices such as desktop computers, laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet computers, smart televisions (e.g., Internet-connected televisions), set-top boxes, game consoles, security systems (including security cameras), in-vehicle computers, and network devices (e.g., routers, switches, and modems). According to some embodiments of the Disclosure, UE110 may include portable wireless communication devices, smartphones, cellular phones, foldable mobile phones, devices having subscriber identification modules, personal computers, selective call receivers, or any other devices capable of sending and receiving communication signals over a wireless network. In some other embodiments of the Disclosure, UE110 may include wearable devices such as smartwatches, fitness bands, and optical head-mounted displays. Furthermore, UE110 may be referred to as subscriber units, mobile units, mobile stations, users, terminals, mobile terminals, wireless terminals, fixed terminals, subscriber stations, user terminals, or devices, or may be described using other terms used in the Art. UE110 can communicate with BS120 via uplink (UL) communication signals. BS102 can communicate with UE110 via downlink (DL) communication signals.

[0046] The UE110 may include one or more subscriber identification modules (SIMs) that enable access to one or more separate wireless communication networks. As shown in Figure 1, the UE110 may be configured to access RAN121a via BS120a by SIM#1 (not shown in Figure 1) within the UE110, or to access RAN121b via BS120b by SIM#2 (not shown in Figure 1) within the UE110. While the UE110 is shown to access RAN121a and RAN121b, in other examples (not shown), the UE110 may establish additional network connectivity using additional RATs, for example, by using another SIM in addition to SIM#1 and SIM#2.

[0047] Each of SIM#1 and SIM#2 can be associated with a type of wireless communication system. For example, either SIM#1 or SIM#2 can be represented by a SIM card corresponding to a GSM system, a universal subscriber identity module (USIM) card corresponding to a UMTS system, a removable user identity module (RUIM) card, or a CDMA subscriber identity module (CSIM) card corresponding to a CDMA2000 communication system, a universal integrated circuit card (UICC) corresponding to a 5G(NR) communication system, a wireless network card corresponding to an IEEE 802.11x wireless local area network (WLAN), or any other suitable module capable of identifying a subscriber.

[0048] In some examples, a multi-SIM UE can be implemented as a multi-SIM single-standby (MSSS) UE, a multi-SIM multi-standby (MSMS) UE, a multi-SIM multi-active (MSMA) UE, and so on.

[0049] For example, a UE that includes multiple SIMs and connects to two or more networks with two or more SIMs active at a given time may be called an MSMA UE. An exemplary MSMA UE could be a dual-SIM dual-active (DSDA) UE, which may include two SIMs. Both SIMs in a DSDA UE may remain active. For example, a UE with multiple SIMs and connected to two or more networks with one SIM active at a given time may be called an MSMS UE. An example of an MSMS UE could be a dual-SIM dual-standby (DSDS) UE. A DSDS UE can include two SIMs and use a single radio frontend and baseband to register the communication device to a single (same) public land mobile network, or to two different PLMNs, each with two SIMs.

[0050] In a multi-SIM UE, multiple SIMs may share the UE's hardware functions to use the hardware efficiently and economically. For example, the UE's hardware functions may include two or more receiving (Rx) chains, two or more transmitting (Tx) chains, and / or two or more RF chains. Each RF chain may include at least one Rx chain and at least one Tx chain. RF chain sharing may refer to the sharing of the Rx and Tx chains within an RF chain.

[0051] However, sharing hardware functions can sometimes result in temporary hardware contention for the UE. For example, referring to Figure 1, when UE110 is connected in RAN121a and idle or inactive in RAN121b, all RF chains may be occupied by UE110's SIM#1 for communication in RAN121a. When UE110 becomes connected in RAN121b via SIM#2, it may be necessary to switch the Rx chain, Tx chain, or RF chain to RAN121b.

[0052] In this case, if RAN121a is unaware of the reduced functionality of the UE, data loss due to demodulation failure and wasted radio resources in RAN121a may occur. To avoid the above problems, support information from UE110 to RAN121a regarding these temporary UE (or UE functionality) limitations may be useful.

[0053] Figure 2 shows a flowchart of an exemplary wireless communication procedure 200 according to several embodiments of the present disclosure. Details described in all of the aforementioned embodiments of the present disclosure are applicable to the embodiments shown in Figure 2. Those skilled in the art will understand that the order of operations in exemplary procedure 200 may be changed, and some operations in exemplary procedure 200 may be deleted or modified without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.

[0054] Referring to Figure 2, UE210 and BS220 can function as UE110 and BS120, respectively, as shown in Figure 1. In operation 211, UE210 and BS220 may interact to perform an RRC reconfiguration operation with UE210. For example, BS220 may send an RRC reconfiguration message to UE210. The RRC reconfiguration message may instruct UE210 to report support information to BS220. Under some scenarios, UE210 may send a UE support information message to BS220 in operation 213.

[0055] For example, a UE can use UE support information messages to notify the network of the following information: • Delay budget report that communicates the desired increment / decrement in the disconnective reception (DRX) cycle length in connection mode. • Information on overheating support • In-device coexistence (IDC) support information • Preferences for DRX parameters for power saving • Preference for maximum aggregate bandwidth for power saving • Preference regarding the maximum number of secondary component carriers for power saving • Preferences regarding the maximum number of multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) layers for power saving. • Preferences for minimum scheduling offset in cross-slot scheduling for power saving • Preferences regarding RRC status • Configured grant support information for NR sidelink communication • Preference regarding the provision of reference time information • Support information for multi-SIM (for example, multi-USIM (MUSIM)), or Any combination of those.

[0056] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, a UE capable of providing multi-SIM support information may initiate the above procedure (for example, if the UE is configured to do so) in response to a decision on whether to leave the connection state or whether a gap is needed, or, for example, in response to a change in gap information without leaving the connection state.

[0057] In some embodiments of this disclosure, the UE can use the above procedure to provide the BS with information related to the reduced functionality (e.g., Rx chain, Tx chain, or RF chain).

[0058] Figure 3 shows a flowchart of an exemplary procedure 300 for wireless communication according to several embodiments of the present disclosure. Details described in all of the aforementioned embodiments of the present disclosure are also applicable to the embodiments shown in Figure 3.

[0059] In Figure 3, UE310 and BS320 can function as UE110 and BS120, respectively, as shown in Figure 1. Hereafter, this disclosure describes the solution using UE310 with two SIMs (e.g., SIM#3A and SIM#3B), but it should be noted that the solution is also applicable to UEs with more than two SIMs and can access more than two RANs.

[0060] In operation 311, UE310 may receive configuration messages (e.g., RRC reconfiguration messages) from BS320 associated with network #3A. UE310 may access BS320 or network #3A via SIM #3A. For example, UE310 may be connected on network #3A. UE310 may be idle or inactive on another network (indicated as "network #3B"). Network #3B may be associated with SIM #3B.

[0061] In some embodiments, the configuration message may indicate that the UE310 can request a gap, or that the UE310 can request a preferred state, such as idle or inactive. The gap configuration may optionally indicate the duration, or period, during which the UE remains connected to a network (e.g., network #3A) while temporarily switching to another network (e.g., network #3B).

[0062] In some embodiments, the configuration message may indicate that UE310 can request a function reduction from BS320. The function reduction request may be per RF chain, per TX chain, and / or per RX chain. The function reduction request may indicate any combination of RF chains, TX chains, and RX chains. In some examples, UE310 may use this instruction to decide whether to send a function reduction request (for example, whether to switch a chain occupied by network #3A to network #3B, or whether to switch a chain to network #3B).

[0063] For example, UE310 may include two or more Rx chains, two or more Tx chains, and / or two or more RF chains. Each RF chain may include at least one Rx chain and at least one Tx chain. For simplicity, let's assume that UE310 includes Rx chain #1 and Rx chain #2, Tx chain #1 and Tx chain #2, RF chain #1 includes Rx chain #1 and Tx chain #1, and RF chain #2 includes Rx chain #2 and TX chain #2.

[0064] In some examples, the reduced functionality may be per Rx chain, such as requesting the switching of Rx chain #1 from network #3A to network #3B. In some examples, the reduced functionality may be per Tx chain, such as requesting the switching of Tx chain #1 from network #3A to network #3B. In some examples, the reduced functionality may be per RF chain, such as requesting RF chain #1 from network #3A to network #3B. In some examples, the reduction in functionality may be per Rx chain and per Tx chain, per Rx chain and per RF chain, per Tx chain and per RF chain, or per Rx chain, per Tx chain and per RF chain. For example, UE310 may request the switching of Tx chain #1 and R chain #2 from network #3A to network #3B.

[0065] In some embodiments, the configuration message may indicate a timer value for switching without response. For example, this configured timer value allows the UE310 to switch the requested function (e.g., Rx chain, Tx chain, RF chain, or any combination thereof) in response to the timer's expiration if there is no response to a function reduction request. A detailed description of the timer is provided in the following text of this disclosure.

[0066] In some embodiments, configuration messages may indicate that the UE310 can autonomously switch hardware functions (e.g., Rx chain, Tx chain, RF chain, or any combination thereof) from network #3A to another network (e.g., network #3B) without request. Details of the reduction of autonomous functions are described in the following text of this disclosure.

[0067] In some embodiments, the configuration message may indicate a switched function (e.g., a chain) shared between network #3A and another network (e.g., network #3B). In some embodiments, the configuration message may indicate a switched function (e.g., a chain) that is completely occupied by the other network (e.g., network #3B).

[0068] In operation 313, the UE may decide to switch to network #3B. The UE may make such a decision in a variety of scenarios, including, but not limited to, the following: Scenario 1: Periodic switching, such as receiving paging on network #3B or performing measurements on network #3B. Scenario 2: Aperiodic switching such as tracking area update (TAU), RAN-based notification area update (RNAU), mobile originate short message service (MO SMS), and voice calls using voice over LTE (VoLTE) or voice over NR (VoNR) in network #3B. Scenario 3: UE310 may include at least two Rx chains. UE310 is connected in network #3A and needs to switch some of its Rx functionality (e.g., an Rx chain) to network #3B. If the UE is idle or inactive in network #3B, UE310 will change its Rx functionality in network #3A for DL reception in network #3B. Scenario 4: Aperiodic (e.g., one-shot) switching. For example, the UE310 enters a connected state on network #3B (e.g., resuming / setting up an RRC connection), including registration, SMS, RAU, busy indicator, etc.

[0069] UE310 may send a variety of requests, including, but are not limited to, gap requests, deactivation requests, and priority state requests (e.g., to become idle or inactive on network #3A) in order to switch to network #3B. In some embodiments, UE310 may send a gap request in priority over deactivation requests and priority state requests. UE310 may also send a deactivation request in priority over priority state requests. That is, gap requests have a higher priority than deactivation requests, and deactivation requests have a higher priority than priority state requests.

[0070] In some embodiments, the UE310 may decide which request to send based on the following criteria: i. If the gap can satisfy the requirements of network #3B, UE301 shall request the gap, taking precedence over requests for functionality reduction and requests for priority status. ii. For example, if UE301 supports decompression, UE310 may request decompression if a gap to satisfy network #3B is not configurable, if the gap configured by network #3A is insufficient to serve network #3B, if it is not possible to meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of network #3B, or if a function required by network #3B (e.g., chaining) is occupied by network #3A. iii. For example, if UE301 does not support deceleration, or if deceleration is insufficient to serve network #3B, UE310 may request network #3A to transition to an idle or inactive state.

[0071] For example, a UE that supports decompression may mean that the UE contains two or more Tx chains, two or more Rx chains, or two or more RF chains. A UE containing only one Tx chain and one Rx chain may be considered not to support decompression. In other words, only UEs having at least two Tx chains, at least two Rx chains, or both, can submit a decompression request.

[0072] For example, the fact that a gap satisfying the network is not configurable could mean that UE301 cannot request a gap from network #3A that can satisfy the requirements of network #3B, for example, because the requested gap is longer than the threshold or the periodicity of the requested gap is high (e.g., higher than the threshold).

[0073] For example, a gap created by one network may be insufficient to serve another network, which could mean that a gap created by network #3A is insufficient to serve network #3B. For instance, none of the gaps created by network #3A may satisfy the requirements of network #3B.

[0074] For example, the inability to meet the network's QoS requirements could mean that the gap configuration cannot meet the QoS requirements of network #3B (e.g., transmit speed, latency requirements, etc.).

[0075] For example, if a function required by one network is occupied by another network, this could mean that the Rx, Tx, or RF chain required by network #3B is occupied by network #3A. For instance, UE310 might want to be connected to network #3B (e.g., to receive DL data or transmit UL data). However, the RF, Tx, or Rx functions required by network #3B are occupied by network #3A. In this case, the UE may send a request for function reduction to BS320 (or network #3A).

[0076] In operation 315, UE310 may send a request for feature reduction to BS320. In some examples, the request may be included in a UE assistance information message. In some examples, the request may be included in another message, such as a dedicated message. The request for feature reduction may refer to an Rx chain, a Tx chain, an RF chain, or any combination thereof.

[0077] In some embodiments, the UE310 may be configured with a timer value for function reduction without response. In response to the transmission of a request, the UE310 may start the timer. If the UE310 does not receive a response to the request before the timer expires, the UE310 may autonomously switch the requested function (e.g., Rx chain, Tx chain, RF chain, or any combination thereof) to network #3B. If the UE310 receives a response to the request while the timer is still running, the UE310 may stop the timer.

[0078] In operation 317, in response to receiving a request from UE310, BS320 may send a response to UE310. The response can be carried out in various ways, as detailed in the following text. The following embodiments of the response can be used individually or in any combination thereof.

[0079] In some embodiments, the response may indicate the release of an SCG, or the release of one or more SCells, and may be transmitted via an RRC reconfiguration message. In some examples, the RRC reconfiguration message may indicate the release of a secondary cell group (SCG) on network #3A, which may suggest that BS320 approves all or at least some of the reduction request. In some examples, the RRC reconfiguration message may indicate the release of one or more SCells. For example, a reduction request may request the release of several cells (X SCells). The RRC reconfiguration message may instruct the UE to release several cells (Y SCells), where X and Y may be different or the same. In some examples, the RRC reconfiguration message may not indicate the release of any cells, which may suggest that BS320 rejects the reduction request.

[0080] In some embodiments, the response may explicitly indicate whether the request is permitted or denied. That is, the response may indicate whether the UE can perform the requested reduction in functionality. Such an indication may include a single bit. For example, a value of "1" may indicate permission, a value of "0" may indicate denial, or vice versa. The indication may be included in an RRC reconfiguration message or any other message, such as a dedicated message.

[0081] In some embodiments, the response may indicate a specific Tx chain, Rx chain, RF chain, or any combination thereof, for which switching to network #3B is permitted or prohibited. For example, the instruction may indicate that RF chain #1 can be switched to network #3B.

[0082] In some embodiments, the response may indicate whether the Rx chain, Tx chain, or RF chain being switched is shared between network #3A and network #3B, or is entirely occupied by network #3B.

[0083] In operation 319, based on the response from BS320, UE310 may switch the corresponding function (e.g., Tx chain, Rx chain, RF chain, or any combination) to network #3B.

[0084] In some embodiments, UE310 may be configured for autonomous, unrequested function reduction. When UE310 decides to reduce a function associated with network #3A, UE310 may autonomously perform the reduction (e.g., switching a chain occupied by network #3A to network #3B, or switching a chain to network #3B) without sending a function reduction request to BS320 as described above. In operation 321, in response to an unrequested function reduction, UE310 may send information associated with the reduced function (e.g., the switched RF chain, RX chain, or TX chain) to BS320.
