AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for manufacturing cholesteric liquid crystal layers struggle with adjusting the angle of the helical axis principal direction relative to the substrate surface, leading to difficulties in achieving anisotropic reflection characteristics.

Method used

A method involving the formation of a composition layer on a substrate that satisfies specific orientation conditions, followed by cholesteric orientation of the liquid crystal compound using a liquid crystal composition containing chiral agents whose helical induced force changes upon light irradiation or temperature change, and subsequent curing to fix the orientation.

Benefits of technology

Enables the production of a cholesteric liquid crystal layer with a reflective surface non-parallel to the substrate surface, facilitating improved reflective anisotropy and flexibility in light reflection direction.

Abstract

To provide a method capable of easily producing a cholesteric liquid crystal layer whose reflection surface is not parallel to a substrate surface.SOLUTION: A method for producing a cholesteric liquid crystal layer includes: a step 1 of forming a composition layer satisfying a following condition 1, a following condition 2, or a following condition 3 on a substrate, using a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal compound; and a step 2 of subjecting the composition layer to a treatment for cholesteric alignment of the liquid crystal compound in the composition layer to form a cholesteric liquid crystal layer. Condition 1: At least some of the liquid crystal compounds in the composition layer are oriented to be inclined relative to the substrate surface. Condition 2: The liquid crystal compound is oriented such that a tilt angle of the liquid crystal compound in the composition layer continuously changes in a thickness direction. Condition 3: At least some of the liquid crystal compounds in the composition layer are oriented perpendicular to the substrate surface.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
