Abstract

To provide an apparatus and a method for composite ply lay-up.SOLUTION: A method of preparing a preform for solidification into a composite part includes: distributing a first set of a plurality of lanes, each containing tows of fiber-reinforced material 151, at a first angle such that these lanes are arranged side-by-side with respect to each other to form a first layer of multi-lane tow 152; applying a film that resists shear forces applied to the multi-lane tow so that it is in direct contact with the multi-lane tow; transferring the multi-lane tow to a mandrel; compressing the multi-lane tow by a ply-by-ply (PBP) machine located on the mandrel; and removing the film from the multi-lane tow.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
