Description
BACKGROUND
[0001] The present invention relates to building construction, and in particular to a vented fascia trim piece.
[0002] Fascia trim pieces are generally well-known in the art, and serve to cover the fascia board. Soffit panels are also generally well-known in the art. Soffit panels enclose the underside of the eaves of homes and other buildings of the type having roof eaves which extend beyond and hang over the outside walls of the building. The purpose of the soffit panels is to hide the eaves from view, and prevent the use of the underside of the eaves as a nesting place for insects, birds and the like. In modern day building construction, the soffit can be vented to allow outside air to flow into the attic of the building to equalize the attic temperature and pressure with that of the outside environment. This equalization helps to prevent degradation of the roof, reduce moisture accumulation, and improve the heating and cooling efficiency for the building interior. Ideally, proper ventilation would include more intake (ventilation provided by the soffit and other intake ventilation) than exhaust (through roof vents). Intake ventilation should have enough net free area (NFA) to draw the airflow needed to work under a roof vent system.
[0003] While some soffit panels are perforated or louvered to facilitate venting, they possess certain drawbacks. One such disadvantage is that insects, such as bees, bugs and the like, can get through the vents, and use the soffit as a nesting place. Debris can also become lodged in the vents to impede the free flow of air into the eave. Furthermore, such prior soffit panels normally have exposed or visible vents, thereby detracting from the overall appearance of the structure. Consequently, providing a fascia trim piece that has venting to supplement and / or replace the venting provided by the soffit would be advantageous.BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004] One embodiment of the invention is a fascia trim piece. The fascia trim piece has a face section and a bottom section extending from the face section. The bottom section has a plurality of openings. A soffit channel is positioned adjacent to the bottom section on the fascia trim piece.
[0005] Another embodiment of the invention is a fascia trim piece. The fascia trim piece has a single piece body with a face section and a bottom section extending from the face section. The bottom section has a plurality of openings. A soffit channel is positioned adjacent to the bottom section.
[0006] Yet another embodiment of the invention is a fascia trim and soffit system. The fascia trim and soffit system has a fascia trim piece with a face section and a bottom section extending from the face section. The bottom section has a plurality of openings. A soffit channel is positioned adjacent to the bottom section. The soffit is positioned in the soffit channel.

It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings, and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise. The drawings referenced herein are schematic and associated views thereof are not necessarily drawn to scale.
[0018] As show in FIGS. 1-6, an embodiment of a fascia trim piece 2 is shown. The fascia trim piece 2 includes a face 3 with an inner surface 4 and an outer surface 6. The inner surface 4 may contact a portion of the fascia board 30 of a building, as illustrated in FIG. 6. The outer surface 6 may be textured, painted, coated, or otherwise designed to provide the desired appearance for the portion of the fascia trim piece 2 that will be visible when looking toward the roof.
[0019] The fascia trim piece 2 includes a bottom surface 8. The bottom surface 8 extends from the face 3. In the illustrated embodiment, the bottom surface 8 extends from the bottom edge of the face 3 and is generally perpendicular to the face 3. The bottom surface 8 could be positioned on said fascia trim piece 2 adjacent to the face 3, but not necessarily extending from the bottom edge of the face 3. The bottom surface 8 does not necessarily need to be generally perpendicular to the face 3. For example, the bottom surface 8 could extend from a fold or other bend or extension in the fascia trim piece 2. In addition, the bottom surface 8 could be at an angle other than 90° with respect to the face 3.
[0020] The fascia trim piece 2 includes a soffit channel 12. The soffit channel 12 is illustrated as being generally parallel to the bottom surface 8 and extends from side wall 10. However, the soffit channel 12 does not need to be in the exact configuration shown in FIGS. 1-6. The soffit channel 12 could be positioned above, below, or at the same height as the bottom surface 8. The soffit channel 12 could also be positioned at an angle other than 90° with respect to the face 3. The illustrated soffit channel 12 has a first wall 14, a second wall 16, and a third wall 18. These walls (14, 16, 18) create the soffit channel 12 than can receive a section of soffit 40, as illustrated in FIG. 6. While the illustrated embodiment shows a third wall 18 that is longer than the first wall 14, the third wall 18 could be shorter than the first wall 14. Moreover, the shape of the soffit channel 12 does not necessarily need to have a rectangular profile. The second wall 16 does not need to be generally perpendicular to the first wall 14 and / or the third wall 18.
[0021] The bottom section 8 includes perforations 20. The illustrated embodiment shows rows of generally cylindrical holes that have a diameter of approximately 0.080-0.100 inches. The perforations 20 can be of any shape and / or size provided that they allow air to pass through the perforation 20 while keeping debris, bugs, and other articles from passing through. While the illustrated embodiment shows rows of perforations 20, the rows may be staggered or aligned or the perforations 20 may be randomized.
[0022] The fascia trim piece 2 may include a folded section 22. The folded section 22 may act as a stiffening section for the fascia trim piece 2. The folded section 22 may also abut and / or engage the drip edge installed on the roof 34.
[0023] As illustrated in FIG. 6, the fascia trim piece 2 attaches to the fascia board 30. A gap 80 may be present between the bottom of the fascia board 30 and the bottom surface 8. This permits intake of air in the area below the fascia board 30. The fascia board 30 is typically coupled to a rafter 32 that is coupled to a wall 36 of the building. The wall 36 may be covered by siding 50 and a roof 34 may be on top of the rafters 32.
[0024] The soffit channel 12 holds one end of the soffit 40. The other end of the soffit 40 may be coupled to a board 38 or other structure coupled to wall 36. The soffit 40 may include perforations or may be solid.
[0025] The ventilation provided by the perforations 20 in the fascia trim piece 2 may permit the soffit 40 to be entirely solid as the net free area (NFA) provided by the fascia trim piece 2 may be sufficient to provide the necessary intake for the building for the associated exhaust provided by any roof vents, including, but not limited to, ridge vents.

[0027] Another embodiment of a fascia trim piece 102 is shown in FIGS. 7-9. The fascia trim piece 102 includes a face 103 with an inner surface 104 and an outer surface 106. The fascia trim piece 102 includes a bottom surface 108 with openings 120. An upper flange 122 and a bottom surface flange 118 may be formed on the fascia trim piece 102. Portions of the fascia trim piece 102 may be textured, painted, coated, or otherwise designed to provide the desired look, such as the look of wood or other material.
[0028] While the illustrated embodiments show perforations 20, 120 along most of the bottom surface 8, 108, a portion of the bottom surface 8, 108 may exclude perforations 20, 120. Moreover, the side wall 10 may include perforations 20 to help draw air.

1. A fascia trim piece, comprising:a face section;a bottom section extending from said face section, said bottom section having a plurality of openings; anda soffit channel positioned adjacent to said bottom section.
2. The fascia trim piece of claim 1, wherein said soffit channel is generally parallel to said bottom section.
3. The fascia trim piece of claim 1, wherein said plurality of openings are rows of circular holes.
4. The fascia trim piece of claim 3, wherein said rows are staggered.
5. The fascia trim piece of claim 3, wherein said holes have a diameter in the range of 0.080-0.100 inches.
6. The fascia trim piece of claim 1, including a side wall that extends upward from said bottom section to said soffit channel.
7. The fascia trim piece of claim 6, wherein said soffit channel includes a first wall extending from said side wall, a second wall extending upward from said first wall, and a third wall extending from said second wall, said third wall being generally parallel to said first wall.
8. The fascia trim piece of claim 7, wherein said third wall is longer than said first wall.
9. A fascia trim piece, comprising:a single piece body having a face section, a bottom section extending from said face section, and a plurality of openings in said bottom section.
10. The fascia trim piece of claim 9, including a soffit channel that is positioned adjacent to said bottom section.
11. The fascia trim piece of claim 9, wherein said plurality of openings are rows of circular holes.
12. The fascia trim piece of claim 11, wherein said rows are staggered.
13. The fascia trim piece of claim 11, wherein said holes have a diameter in the range of 0.080-0.100 inches.
14. The fascia trim piece of claim 10, including a side wall that extends upward from said bottom section to said soffit channel.
15. The fascia trim piece of claim 14, wherein said soffit channel includes a first wall extending from said side wall, a second wall extending upward from said first wall, and a third wall extending from said second wall, said third wall being generally parallel to said first wall.

A fascia trim and soffit system, comprising:a fascia trim piece having a face section, a bottom section extending from said face section, said bottom section having a plurality of openings, and a soffit channel positioned adjacent to said bottom section; anda soffit positioned in said soffit channel.
18. The fascia trim and soffit system of claim 17, wherein said soffit channel is generally parallel to said bottom section.
19. The fascia trim and soffit system of claim 17, wherein said plurality of openings are rows of circular holes.
20. The fascia trim and soffit system of claim 19, wherein said soffit is generally imperforate.
