[0002] The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for improved opening and closing of one or both of a toilet lid and toilet seat. More specifically, the present invention provides devices that harvest kinetic energy generated by a user opening a toilet seat to dispense aromatic substances and facilitate subsequent closing of the seat. This energy-harvesting approach offers an efficient and user-friendly solution to automatically enhance the functionality of toilet systems, promoting hygiene and convenience without the need for external power sources or complex mechanisms.BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0003] At least two states of use for the component of the Western toilet in a home exist, namely first a state with a lifted seat and second a state with a lowered seat. The differences have been the source of domestic strife, mythical mishaps, and comedic routines. Furthermore, a different motivation for a lowered seat state is that domestic pets tend to use toilets as water bowls if the cover of a toilet is left in an open position. Pets drinking from toilets raise concerns of hygiene for their owners who lovingly interact with their pets. These concerns have inspired a number of apparatus aimed at satisfying the habits and expectations of both men and women, while unintentionally preventing pets'own use of toilets.

[0004] Some apparatus have been inspired by a perceived need to address matters of hygiene in health care and public facilities, and to accommodate infirmities. Still others have been attempts to embrace cross-cultural influences in design to offer travelers a sense of normalcy. Another dimension may be related to satisfying an appetite for the trappings of luxury.

[0007] In some examples, an apparatus for automatically closing a toilet lid is defined where the apparatus includes a vessel including a compressible element, wherein a quantity of air moves out of the vessel as the compressible element is compressed and wherein the compressible element expands from a compressed state when a force compressing the compressible element is removed. The apparatus may also include an orifice or a plurality of orifices that allow airflow to pass between an interior region of the vessel and an external region, wherein a number of the orifices and a size of at least a first orifice determines a flow rate of the airflow as it passes between the interior region of the vessel and an external region to be in a predetermined range of flow rates. In some examples, the apparatus may further include a check valve to allow an additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and an external region in a first direction, wherein the check valve prevents at least 50% of the additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and an external region in a second direction, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction. In some examples, the apparatus may also include a removable cover piece, wherein the removable cover piece interfaces with the vessel and presents a surface to interact with a cover of the toilet. In some examples, the apparatus includes an attachment fixture, wherein the attachment fixture holds the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid to a surface of the toilet.

[0027] According to the present invention, a flexible bellows attachment is provided for hands free dispensing of an aromatic liquid (or vaporized liquid) and soft closure of one or both of a toilet seat and a toilet lid.

[0028] The invention includes a toilet closure apparatus attachable to a rim of a toilet or to a toilet tank behind a toilet lid. The toilet closure apparatus employs energy stored in a compressible medium provided by the action of raising the seat. In some examples, the toilet closure apparatus may also incorporate a volume of air in a canister containing potpourri or essential oils in an absorbent pad to forcibly expel a fragrance into the toilet room when the lid is pressed against the toilet closure apparatus.

An apparatus for automatically closing a toilet lid, the apparatus comprising:a vessel comprising a compressible element, wherein a quantity of air moves out of the vessel as the compressible element is compressed and wherein the compressible element expands from a compressed state when a force compressing the compressible element is removed;an orifice or a plurality of orifices that allow airflow to pass between an interior region of the vessel and an external region, wherein a number of orifices of the plurality of orifices and a size of at least a first orifice determines a flow rate of the airflow as it passes between the interior region of the vessel and the external region to be in a predetermined range of flow rates;a check valve to allow an additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a first direction, wherein the check valve prevents at least 50% of the additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a second direction, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction;a removable cover piece, wherein the removable cover piece interfaces with the vessel and presents a surface to interact with a cover of a toilet; andan attachment fixture, wherein the attachment fixture holds the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid to a surface of the toilet.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compressible element is one of: a bellows, a coil-spring mechanism, and a volume of a memory foam comprised within a structure of the vessel.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a dispensing tube for storing an aromatic chemical, wherein the dispensing tube is connected to the compressible element, wherein the aromatic chemical is automatically dispensed when the compressible element is compressed.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the volume of the memory foam is comprised within a stationary piston of the vessel, and wherein a moving piston of the vessel comprises a surface that interacts with the volume of the memory foam during a compression.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the removable cover piece comprises a chemical or a mixture of chemicals, wherein when air flows through the removable cover piece it carries at least a first volatile component of the mixture of chemicals with the airflow.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a second set of orifices upon the removable cover piece, wherein the second set of orifices allows air that flows through the check valve to be exchanged with an exterior environment.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flow rate determined by the orifice or the plurality of orifices is between 10% of a vessel's volume per minute and 50% of the vessel's volume per minute.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flow rate determined by the orifice or the plurality of orifices is less than 25% of a vessel's volume per minute.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the check valve is designed to leak an amount of air by the check valve in the second direction, wherein a flow rate of leaking of air by the check valve is between 10% of a vessel's volume per minute and 50% of the vessel's volume per minute.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the check valve is designed to leak an amount of air by the check valve in the second direction, wherein a flow rate of leaking of air by the check valve is less than 25% of a vessel's volume per minute.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a toilet seat and a toilet cover wherein the toilet seat and the toilet cover comprises cushioning material, wherein the cushioning material dampens an impact on the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid.

An apparatus for automatically closing a toilet lid, the apparatus comprising:a vessel comprising a compressible bellows, wherein a quantity of air moves out of the vessel as the compressible bellows is compressed and wherein the compressible bellows expands from a compressed state when a force compressing the compressible bellows is removed;a plurality of orifices that allow airflow to pass between an interior region of the vessel and an external region, wherein a number of orifices of the plurality of orifices and a size of at least a first orifice determines a flow rate of the airflow as it passes between the interior region of the vessel and the external region to be in a predetermined range of flow rates;a check valve to allow an additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a first direction, wherein the check valve prevents at least 50% of the additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a second direction, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction;a removable cover piece, wherein the removable cover piece interfaces with the vessel and presents a surface to interact with a cover of a toilet; anda suction cup, wherein the suction cup holds the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid to a surface of the toilet.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the removable cover piece comprises a chemical or a mixture of chemicals, wherein when air flows through the removable cover piece it carries at least a first volatile component of the mixture of chemicals with the airflow.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a second set of orifices upon the removable cover piece, wherein the second set of orifices allows air that flows through the check valve to be exchanged with the external region.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the flow rate determined by the plurality of orifices is between 10% of a vessel's volume per minute and 50% of the vessel's volume per minute.

The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a dispensing tube for storing an aromatic chemical, wherein the dispensing tube is connected to the compressible bellows, wherein the aromatic chemical is automatically dispensed when the compressible bellows is compressed, wherein the aromatic chemical comprises an essential oil and wherein the essential oil forms a meniscus on a water surface in a toilet bowl to trap and contain objectionable odors.

A method of closing a toilet lid, the method comprising:obtaining an apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid, wherein the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid comprises:a vessel comprising a compressible element, wherein a quantity of air moves out of the vessel as the compressible element is compressed and wherein the compressible element expands from a compressed state when a force compressing the compressible element is removed;an orifice or a plurality of orifices that allow airflow to pass between an interior region of the vessel and an external region, wherein a number of orifices of the plurality of orifices and a size of at least a first orifice determines a flow rate of the airflow as it passes between the interior region of the vessel and the external region to be in a predetermined range of flow rates;a check valve to allow an additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a first direction, wherein the check valve prevents at least 50% of the additional amount of airflow to pass between the interior region of the vessel and the external region in a second direction, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction;a removable cover piece, wherein the removable cover piece interfaces with the vessel and presents a surface to interact with a cover of a toilet; andan attachment fixture, wherein the attachment fixture holds the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid to a surface of the toilet;positioning the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid upon-a the surface of the toilet such that it interacts with the toilet lid;raising the toilet lid to interact with the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid;compressing the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid during a use of the toilet with a force;automatic dispensing an aromatic chemical from the apparatus during the use of the toilet; andremoving the force upon the apparatus for automatically closing the toilet lid, wherein the removing of the force upon the apparatus causes the apparatus to slowly expand and force the toilet lid to close upon the toilet.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the compressible element is one of: a bellows, a coil spring, and a volume of a memory shape foam comprised within a structure of the vessel.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising automatically dispensing the aromatic chemical from the apparatus when the compressible element is compressed.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the aromatic chemical comprises one or more of: an essential oil, a synthetic fragrance, a natural plant-based extract, a disinfectant, and an odor-masking agent.
