Abstract

Disclosed herein are devices, methods, and systems for sealing an open-ended container with a flexible container closure lid. The lid includes a plurality of deflectable buttons or dimples associated with presenting information. In some embodiments, the button or dimple may be depressed by a user's finger. In some embodiments, the information relates to the type of food, time, day, and / or month. The lid may be rectangular or circular and may be constructed of silicone, and may further include a sealing structure. The button or dimple may be ergonomically contoured and positioned for ease of access, require a low, predictable actuation force, and provide tactile feedback. In some embodiments, the button or dimple is sized based on label readability.

[0002] The present disclosure relates to re-closeable / sealable containers including a container lid, and in particular, a container lid with a button or dimple for presenting information to a user.BACKGROUND

[0003] It is a widespread practice to store perishable goods in re-closeable / sealable containers. While a closure or seal may help reduce spoilage, goods may eventually spoil even under optimal storage conditions, and ingesting spoiled goods can cause foodborne illness. To mitigate this risk, users commonly date goods to track storage duration and classify the type of goods to estimate expected shelf life. Common approaches include written notations (e.g., date of preparation and type of goods) and indicator stickers, but these can be problematic in legibility, durability, and the container closure's reusability. Existing solutions therefore fall short in addressing these issues.

[0004] Accordingly, there is a need for devices, methods, and systems that reliably contain perishable goods and provide an indication to the user of whether the goods in the container are safe for consumption.BRIEF SUMMARY

[0005] Disclosed herein are devices, methods, and systems for sealing an open-ended container with a flexible closure lid. The lid includes a top having a first surface, at least one deflectable button or dimple formed on the first surface as an integral part thereof, and a label at or near the button or dimple for presenting information. In some embodiments, the button or dimple may be depressed by a user's finger. In some embodiments, the information relates to the type of food, time, day, and / or month. The lid may be rectangular or circular and may be constructed of silicone, and may further include a sealing structure. The button or dimple may be ergonomically contoured and positioned for ease of access, require a low, predictable actuation force, and provide tactile feedback. In some embodiments, the button or dimple is sized based on label readability.

[0006] Also disclosed are methods of sealing a container with a lid and presenting information using a deflectable button or dimple. The method includes sealing a container with a lid, where the lid including at least one deflectable button formed on the first surface as an integral part thereof, and a label at or near the button for presenting information, and actuating the at least one deflectable button to present information. In some embodiments, the button or dimple may be depressed by a user's finger. In some embodiments, the information relates to the type of food, time, day, and / or month. The lid may be rectangular or circular and may be constructed of silicone, and may further include a sealing structure. The lid includes a surface with at least one integral dynamic tactile feature, and the surface or the at least one dynamic tactile feature includes an information set. The information set selected from at least one of a letter, a number, a symbol or a combination thereof. The at least one integral dynamic tactile feature transitions from a raised configuration to a recessed configuration or from a recessed configuration to a raised configuration in response to a force applied to the dynamic tactile feature. In some aspects, the information set is positioned adjacent to, on or within said tactile feature. In some aspects, the information set is positioned on the lid and adjacent to said tactile feature. In some aspects, the information set is molded, co-molded, or embedded on or within said tactile feature. In some aspects, the information set is in Braille. In some aspects, the lid is made of silicone.

The lid includes at least one information conveying feature integrally molded with the lid, the feature comprising an information set, the information set selected from at least one of a letter, a word, a number, a date, a symbol or a combination thereof. The information conveying feature transitions from a raised configuration to a recessed configuration or from a recessed configuration to a raised configuration in response to a force applied to said feature to convey information about contents of a storage container associated with the lid. In some aspects, the storage container is also included and the storage container is a food storage container. In some aspects, the lid further includes a bottom surface opposite a top surface and at least one sealing structure positioned around a portion of a perimeter of the bottom surface of the lid. [0034] Disclosed herein are devices, systems, and methods for conveying information on a closure device (e.g., lid) of a food, perishable or non-perishable good container to a user thereof. For example, information on the lid may help indicate when food in the container was prepared, assisting the user in tracking storage duration. In another example, information on the lid may help indicate the type of food stored in the container, assisting the user in determining an appropriate storage period.

[0035] One unique aspect of the disclosed subject matter is that the lid comprises a plurality of pop-up / down buttons / dimples positioned on or within the top surface of the lid. These buttons / dimples may have labels positioned on or near them. In use, the user presses a button or dimple to identify when the food in the container was created; alternatively, the user can press a button or dimple to identify when the food will expire. In some embodiments, the buttons / dimples may also indicate the type of food within the container. In some embodiments, the labels may use different configurations, such as abbreviations, different numeral systems, and Braille. The disclosed methods, devices, and systems allow users to keep track of storage times and avoid consuming spoiled food.

[0036] The disclosed lid can be configured for multiple forms of date or data tracking. In one embodiment, the lid includes labels and / or buttons depicting days of the week, which may be useful for short-term refrigerator storage. In other embodiments, the buttons and / or labels indicate months of the year, which may be useful for longer-term storage.

[0038] Typically, containers for use with the disclosed lids may be bowl-shaped or of other shapes, with inner and outer surfaces that define an open or a storage space. Illustrative containers are shown in FIGS. 1A-1B. Referring to FIGS. 1A-1B, the container 100 includes a container body 102. The container body 102 includes an outer side surface 104, an inner side surface 106, an inner bottom surface 108, an outer top edge 110, an inner top edge 112, and a container top surface 114. The inner side surface 106, inner bottom surface 108, and inner top edge 112 define an interior volume 116. The inner top edge 112 defines an opening 118 forming an open end 120 of the container body 102 in fluid communication with an interior volume 116. The outer top edge 110 defines the perimeter of the open end 120.

[0039] In most embodiments, the open end 120 is configured to receive a closure member or lid. The open end 120 may be at the top of the container (e.g., towards the container top surface 114), although other embodiments may position the open end 120 at the bottom or side.

In some embodiments, the container 100 is glass, such as tempered glass, which has properties such as transparency, scratch resistance, and tolerance of temperature changes (e.g., useful for refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher use). In other embodiments, the container 100 may be a durable polymer, for example polypropylene, which has properties such as reduced weight and impact resistance. In still other embodiments, the container 100 may be stainless steel or other coated metal to provide strength and enhanced barrier properties for perishable goods. One or more of the outer side surface 104, outer top edge 110, and container top surface 114 may include a seal configured to cooperate with a gasket on the lid to help maintain a tight, leak-resistant, and airtight seal. Surfaces in contact with food may include non-stick or easy-clean finishes. The material of the container 100 may be selected to withstand repeated washing and thermal cycling without warping, which could affect the seal.

In some embodiments, the lid is made from a flexible material, for example plastic or silicone. In one embodiment, the lid is made from silicone. Silicone is used because it is a flexible yet durable material and thus permits controlled deformation of the button or dimple surfaces.

In either example, the button or dimple 322 may have a size or shape to fit a whole word, date, or symbol (e.g., Tuesday or 2025), or a portion of a word, date, or symbol (e.g., T or Tu or Tues. or 25).

In some embodiments, a seal structure 432 may be coupled to the lid 400 to improve seal capability between the container and the lid 400 and to mitigate against accidental removal of the lid 400. For example, the lid may include one or more grooves or raised ribs 432 formed on the lid inner side surface 406. The seal structure 432 is configured to work with the container's rim to both seal and hold the lid 400 in place. The grooves or raised ribs may be used with one or more soft gaskets (e.g., silicone or food-safe TPE) arranged to create the seal with a friction-fit to secure the lid 400 to prevent accidental removal. Furthermore, the seal structure 432 may be made from material of different elasticity and stiffness to address the sealing and retention needs. Alternatively, the seal structure 432 may have different cross sections. For example, cross-sections of differing sizes may be combined into a tapered seal structure 432 that increases in friction as the lid 400 settles into the container.

[0065] As discussed with respect to FIGS. 1A-2D, structures and / or surfaces of the containers 100, 202 may be configured to engage the lid and to create a tight, leak-resistant, airtight seal. The lid 500 may include structures and / or surfaces configured to accomplish this goal. In some embodiments, one or more seal structures 536 may be coupled to the lid 500 to improve seal capability between the container and the lid 500. The lid 500 can employ various seal designs to keep air and liquid in. For example, a soft gasket made of silicone or soft, food-safe plastic may be molded onto the lid 500 or placed as a removable ring in a groove or against an edge, a corner or one or more surfaces of the lid 500 (e.g., lid inner side surface 506 and lid inner bottom edge 516). The gasket can have different shapes—flat, rounded, or with two small lips—to press evenly against the container rim. Another option is a soft foam strip for a compressible seal, or small circular ridges on the underside of the lid that that create multiple thin sealing lines. In another example, silicone may be used for heat and dishwasher use.

2. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the button is depressed with pressure from a finger of a user.

3. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the information is selected from the group consisting of: type of food, time, day, or month or a combination thereof.

4. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the information is in Braille.

5. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the lid is made of silicone.

6. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the lid further comprises a bottom opposite the top and at least one seal structure positioned on the bottom of the lid.

7. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the button is configured to be one or more of:ergonomically contoured;positioned for ease of access;require a low, predictable actuation force; andprovide tactile feedback.

8. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the label is positioned adjacent to, on or within the button or the lid.

9. The flexible container closure lid of claim 1, wherein the label is molded, co-molded, or embedded on or within the button or the lid.

A reusable lid comprising:a surface with at least one integral dynamic tactile feature, the surface or the at least one dynamic tactile feature comprising an information set, the information set selected from at least one of a letter, a number, a symbol or a combination thereof,wherein the at least one integral dynamic tactile feature transitions from a raised configuration to a recessed configuration or from a recessed configuration to a raised configuration in response to a force applied to the dynamic tactile feature.

11. The reusable lid of claim 10, wherein the information set is positioned adjacent to, on or within said tactile feature.

12. The reusable lid of claim 10, wherein the information set is positioned on the lid and adjacent to said tactile feature.

13. The reusable lid of claim 10, wherein the information set is molded, co-molded, or embedded on or within said tactile feature.

14. The reusable lid of claim 10, wherein the information set is in Braille.

15. The reusable lid of claim 10, wherein the lid is made of silicone.

A storage container lid, the lid comprisingat least one information conveying feature integrally molded with the lid, the feature comprising an information set, the information set selected from at least one of a letter, a word, a number, a date, a symbol or a combination thereof,wherein said information conveying feature transitions from a raised configuration to a recessed configuration or from a recessed configuration to a raised configuration in response to a force applied to said feature to convey information about contents of a storage container associated with the lid.

17. The storage container lid of claim 16, wherein the lid further comprises a bottom surface opposite a top surface and at least one sealing structure positioned around a portion of a perimeter of the bottom surface of the lid.

18. The storage container lid of claim 16, wherein the lid is made of silicone.

19. The storage container lid of claim 16, wherein the information set is molded, co-molded, or embedded on or within the information conveying feature.

20. The storage container lid of claim 16, further comprising the storage container, wherein the storage container is a food storage container.
