AI Technical Summary
There is a need for a distinct and stable Ranunculus cultivar with novel flower characteristics, such as well-branched flower stems and strong pink petals, to differentiate it from existing cultivars and enhance ornamental value.
The development of the Ranunculus cultivar 'BC UALLABI', which features well-branched flower stems, double daisy-like flowers with strong pink petals, and a robust herbaceous plant habit, achieved through asexual reproduction by vegetative division and tissue culture propagation.
The cultivar 'BC UALLABI' exhibits stable and true-to-type reproduction, offering unique ornamental features that distinguish it from other Ranunculus varieties, particularly in flower color and branching, suitable for commercial cultivation.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Latin name of the genus and species: Ranunculus asiaticus x cortusifolius.
[0002] Variety denomination: ‘BC UALLABI’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The new Ranunculus cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Alberto Biancheri at a research nursery in Camporosso Mare, Italy. The cross resulting in this new variety was made during 2019.
[0004] The seed parent is an unnamed, unpatented, proprietary Ranunculus asiaticus. The pollen parent is an unnamed, unpatented, Ranunculus cortusifolius. The new variety was selected in 2021 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2019 crossing, in a research greenhouse in Camporosso Mare, Italy.
[0005] Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was first performed by vegetative division of buds sprouting from the rhizome of the selected plant. Subsequent propagation has been performed by tissue culture. First propagation took place at a research greenhouse in Camporosso Mare, Italy in 2021 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] The cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0007] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘BC UALLABI’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘BC UALLABI’ as a new and distinct Ranunculus cultivar:
[0008] 1. Novel flower: well branched flower stems and double daisy like flower.
[0009] 2. Strong pink, RHS 49A flower color
[0010] 3. Vegetative, herbaceous plant habit.
[0011] 3. 15 to 35 cm long flower stems.PARENT COMPARISON
[0012] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ differ in the following;
[0013] 1. Flower petals of the new cultivar are a strong pink, RHS 49A; flower petals of the seed parent are salmon colored.
[0014] 2. The seed parent does not have the novel flower stem branching and double-daisy type flower of the new cultivar.
[0015] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ differ in the following;
[0016] 1. Flower petals of the new cultivar are a strong pink, RHS 49A; flower petals of the pollen parent are yellow colored.
[0017] 2. The pollen parent has a single daisy type flower, with only 5 petals; the new cultivar has many a double daisy flower form with about 150 petals.COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
[0018] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BC UALLABI’ are comparable to the cultivar Ranunculus ‘BC ALLIGAX’, filed concurrently. The two Ranunculus varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘BC UALLABI’ differs in the following:
[0019] 1. Petal color of the new cultivar is strong pink RHS 49A; petal color of this comparator is pale yellow green RHS 157A and 157B.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0020] The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a close-up view of flowers of the new cultivar. The plant producing this flower was approximately six months old, grown in a greenhouse during March in Camporosso, Italy.
[0021] FIG. 2 illustrates plants of about 6 months old in commercial greenhouse production.
[0022] FIG. 3 illustrates various floral and foliar parts.
[0023] The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0024] In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe plants of ‘BC UALLABI’ planted in the month of August in a greenhouse in Camporosso Mare, Italy. The plant has been described in the month of March. In order to protect the crop against pests, some chemical treatments are performed. Treatments with growth regulators can be performed to limit the plant sizes. No growth regulators have been applied on the plant described. The rhizome has been planted on raised benches in a peat and pumice substrate mixture. The growing temperature ranged from 12° C. to 25° C. during the day and from 2° C. to 8° C. during the night. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
