Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to deferring transmission of a signal, for example, an ambient Internet-of-Things (AIoT) signal. In an aspect, a first device obtains information for deferring transmission of a first signal from a third device to a second device. The transmission of the first signal is to be performed by the third device based on reception of a second signal from a fourth device. The first device determines, based on the information, a first defer time for the transmission of the first signal. The first device indicates the third device to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time. By implementing the embodiments of the present disclosure, the interference caused by the activation signal at the reader device could be reduced.

[0046] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof. As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0047] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0049] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0050] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0051] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0053] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0054] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as new radio (NR) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or beyond. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0055] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology.

[0056] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial, a relay node, an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) node, and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0057] As used herein, the term “resource” , “transmission resource” , “resource block” , “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink (UL) resource” or “downlink (DL) resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, a resource in a combination of more than one domain or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, a resource in time domain (such as, a subframe)  will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0058] As discussed above, 3GPP approved the ambient IoT RAN led study item in Rel-18. The motivation of ambient IoT study is to support ultra-low cost and ultra-low power devices for the IoT applications. SA1 completed a study item on ambient power enabled IoT, which focuses on use cases and service requirements, and it includes the objective of defining performance requirements and key performance indication (KPIs) as well.

[0059] Currently, there is an on-going RAN study item on AIoT in RAN, which focuses on 3GPP IoT technology, suitable for deployment in a 3GPP system, which relies on ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for the very-low end IoT applications.

[0060] 3GPP has discussed device categorization based on corresponding characteristics (e.g., energy source, energy storage capability, passive / active transmission, etc. ) and obtained the following agreements regarding the device categorization. 3GPP agreed the following set of AIoT devices are considered in the SI: 1) Device A: no energy storage, no independent signal generation, i.e., backscattering transmission; 2) Device B: has energy storage, no independent signal generation, i.e., backscattering transmission. Use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals; 3) Device C: has energy storage, has independent signal generation, i.e., active RF component t for transmission. The following items are for further study: 1) whether to include device function; 2) whether to include a target maximum power consumption for each device; 3) whether / how to describe what stored energy is used for (in addition to the statement for Device B) ; 4) if combination of these devices will be considered.

[0061] In addition, the following topology was agreed for AIoT network deployment. In Topology 3, the AIoT device receives data / signaling from the assisting node, and transmits data / signaling to a base station; or the AIoT device receives data / signaling from a base station and transmits data / signaling to the assisting node. In this topology, the assisting node is capable of the ambient IoT and can be a relay, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater, etc.

[0062] As discussed above, in topology 3, an activator device can transmit an activation signal to activate an AIoT device for transmitting an AIoT signal. If it is not able to decouple the activation signal from the AIoT signal at the reader device, the reader device will receive the activation signal and the AIoT signal generated by the AIoT device in response to the  reception of the activation signal at the same time. The activation signal is several tens of dBs stronger than the AIoT signal at the reader side especially when the AIoT device is far away from the reader device. The activation signal usually cause interference to the AIoT signal and how to reduce the interference caused by the activation signal at the reader device needs to be studied.

[0063] Therefore, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for deferring transmission of a signal, especially for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal for reducing interference of an activation signal. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a first device (e.g., a defer control unit) obtains information for deferring transmission of a first signal (e.g., an AIoT signal) from a third device (e.g., an AIoT device) to a second device (e.g., a reader device) . The transmission of the first signal is to be performed by the AIoT device based on reception of a second signal (e.g., an activation signal) from a fourth device (e.g., an activator device) . Then, the first device determines, based on the information, a first defer time for the transmission of the first signal. Then, the first device indicates the third device to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time.

[0064] It is understood that the above procedure steps may work together, in a flow of operations as described below, partly together or independently of each other. By implementing the embodiments of the present disclosure, deferring transmission of an AIoT signal can be supported and it could ensure that the activation signal and the AIoT signal would not arrive at the reader device at the same time, thereby reducing the interference caused by the activation signal to the AIoT signal.

[0065] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure of deferring transmission of an AIoT signal will be described below with reference to FIG. 1A through FIG. 12. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0066] FIG. 1A illustrates an example of an application scenario 100A in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The application scenario 100A may be an AIoT network, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a network device 120, an AIoT device 110, and an assisting node 130.

[0067] As illustrated in FIG. 1A, the network device 120 may also be referred to as a gNB 120. The AIoT device 110 may also be referred to as an AIoT tag 110. The assisting node 130 may be but not limited to a relay, an IAB node, a terminal device or a repeater. When the assisting node 130 is a terminal device, it may also be referred to as a user equipment 130 or a UE 130. The assisting node 130 can transmit an activation signal 140 to the AIoT device 110 to activate the AIoT device 110 for transmitting an AIoT signal 150. In response to the reception of the activation signal 140, the AIoT device 110 transmits the AIoT signal 150 to the network device 120. The AIoT signal 150 may also be referred to as a backscattering signal 150. The transmission of the activation signal 140 and the AIoT signal 150 could assist the transmission of a downlink signal 160 from the network device 120 to the assisting node 130.

[0068] FIG. 1B illustrates an example of an application scenario 100B in which some other example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The application scenario 100B may also be an AIoT network, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a network device 120, an AIoT device 110, and an assisting node 130. FIG. 1B merely differs from FIG. 1A in the signal directions.

[0069] As illustrated in FIG. 1B, the network device 120 may also be referred to as a gNB 120. The network device 120 can transmit an activation signal 140 to the AIoT device 110 to activate the AIoT device 110 for transmitting an AIoT signal 150. In response to the reception of the activation signal 140, the AIoT device 110 transmits the AIoT signal 150 to the network device 120. The AIoT signal 150 may also be referred to as a backscattering signal 150. The transmission of the activation signal 140 and the AIoT signal 150 could assist the transmission of an uplink signal 160 from the assisting node 130 to the network device 120.

[0070] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of an application scenario 200 in which yet other example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 may cover both the application scenarios in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B. The application scenario 200 may also be an AIoT network, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a reader device 220 (e.g., a network device 120 or an assisting node 130) , an AIoT device 230, an activation device 240 (e.g., an assisting node 130 or a network device 120) and a defer control unit 210.  The reader device 220 may be the network device 120 and the activator device 240 may be the assisting node 130 correspondingly. Alternatively, the activator device 240 may be the network device 120 and the reader device 220 may be the assisting node 130 correspondingly. The defer control unit 210 may be located in the activator device 240, the reader device 220, a base station (e.g., a serving gNB) , or an LMF.

[0071] The activator device 240 can transmit an activation signal 240-1 to the AIoT device 230 to activate the AIoT device 230 for transmitting an AIoT signal 250. At the same time, an activation signal 240-2 same as the activation signal 240-1 may be received by the reader device 220 from the activator device 240. In response to the reception of the activation signal 240-1, the AIoT device 230 transmits the AIoT signal 250 to the reader device 220. The AIoT signal 250 may also be referred to as a backscattering signal 250.

[0072] As can be seen, if it is not able to decouple the activation signal 240-2 from the AIoT signal 250 at the reader device 220, the reader device 220 will receive the activation signal 240-2 and the AIoT signal 250 at the same time. The activation signal 240-2 is usually much stronger than the AIoT signal 250, and it will cause interference to the AIoT signal 250, rendering that the AIoT signal 250 is not able to be well detected (e.g., detected with a low signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) ) at the reader device 220. Therefore, the present disclosure proposes a defer control unit 210 to perform a defer control function for deferring transmission of the AIoT signal so as to avoid the interference from the activation signal 240-2.

[0073] FIG. 3 illustrates an example signaling process 300 of deferring transmission of an AIoT signal in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 2. The process 300 is beneficial for reducing the interference from the activator device 240 for detection of the AIoT signal at the reader device 220.

[0074] As shown in FIG. 3, the process 300 may involve a first device 302 (e.g., a defer control unit 302) , a second device 304 (e.g., a reader device 304) , a third device 306 (e.g., an AIoT device 306) and a fourth device 308 (e.g., an activator device AIoT) . The first device 302 may perform a defer control function for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal from an AIoT device responsive to an activation signal from an activator device. The first device 302 may be a defer control unit, the fourth device, the second device, a base station, or a location management function (LMF) . The second device 304 and the fourth device 308 may  be associated with the third device 306. The first device 302 could be the defer control unit 210 in FIG. 2, the second device 304 could be the reader device 220 in FIG. 2, the third device 306 could be the AIoT device 230 in FIG. 2, the fourth device 308 could be the activator device 240 in FIG. 2.

[0075] The first device 302 obtains information 305 for deferring transmission of a first signal (e.g., an AIoT signal) from a third device 306 to a second device 304. The transmission of the first signal is to be performed by the third device 306 based on reception of a second signal (e.g., an activation signal) from a fourth device 308. Then, the first device 302 determines 310, based on the information 305, a first defer time for the transmission of the first signal. Further, the first device 302 indicates 320 the third device 306 to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time. Still further, based on receiving a second signal from the fourth device 308, the third device 306 performs transmission of the first signal to the second device 304 deferred by the first defer time based on the indication from the first device 302.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may be caused to transmit 322, to the third device 306, a first request for deferring the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time. In such embodiments, the first device 302 could request the third device 306 to defer the transmission of the first signal directly. For example, the first request may be configured based on a higher layer protocol or tunnel between the first device 302 and the third device 306

[0077] Alternatively or additionally, the first device 302 may transmit 324, to the fourth device 308, a first indication for indicating the fourth device 308 to transmit 326 a first request to the third device 306 for deferring the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time. In such embodiments, the first device 306 could request the third device 306 to defer the transmission of the first signal via the fourth device 308. The first defer time may be included in the first indication. In some example embodiments, the first request may be transmitted via the second signal.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the information 305 may comprise defer capability information of the third device 306. Alternatively or additionally, the information 305 may comprise defer parameter information associated with at least one of transmission of the first signal and the second signal.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may transmit, to the second device 304, a second request for the defer parameter information. Based on receiving the second request, the second device 304 may obtain the defer parameter information and transmit the defer parameter information to the first device 302. The first device 302 may receive the defer parameter information from the second device 304.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the second request for the defer parameter information may comprise a resource configuration for measuring the defer parameter information. Alternatively or additionally, the second request for the defer parameter information may comprise a report configuration for reporting the defer parameter information. Alternatively or additionally, the second request for the defer parameter information may comprise location information of the second device 304.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may receive the defer parameter information from the fourth device 308. Alternatively or additionally, the first device 302 may receive the location information from at least one of the second device 304, the third device 306, the fourth device 308, or a network device. The fourth device 308 may determine, based on one or more signals transmitted by the second device 304, defer parameter information associated with at least one of transmission of the first signal and the second signal, and transmit the defer parameter information to the first device 302.

[0082] In some example embodiments, the defer parameter information may comprise a power delay profile (PDP) of a channel between the fourth device 308 and the second device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the second signal (e.g., the activation signal) . The PDP may also be called as channel impulse response (CIR) . Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a PDP of a channel between the third device 306 and the second device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the first signal (e.g., the AIoT signal) . Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a time of arrival (ToA) of the second signal for a first propagation path. The first propagation path may be a latest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the second signal at the second device 304, which has a power less than a threshold power. Alternatively, the first propagation path may be a latest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the second signal at the second device 304, which has a power less than a power of a maximum propagation path power subtracting a threshold power. In such embodiments, the threshold power may be a preconfigured value or a value determined based on a maximum propagation  path power. For example, the threshold power may be configured by a defer control unit or be preconfigured as y%of the maximum propagation path power (i.e., the power of a strongest path) , wherein 0<y<100. Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a ToA of the first signal for a second propagation path, wherein the second propagation path is an earliest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the first signal at the second device 304. Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise location information of at least one of the fourth device 308, the third device 306 or the second device 304.

[0083] Alternatively or additionally, the first device 302 may transmit, to the fourth device 308, a second indication for indicating the fourth device 308 to transmit, to the third device 306, a third request for the defer capability information of the third device 306. Then the first device 302 may receive from the second device 304 or the third device 306, the defer capability information of the third device 306. In some example embodiments, the defer capability information may be transmitted to the first device 302 via a high layer signaling. In some example embodiments, the second device 304 may receive, from the third device 306, the defer capability information of the third device 306, and transmit, to the first device 302, the defer capability information of the third device 306. In some example embodiments, the defer capability information may be received via the fourth signal. Alternatively or additionally, the defer capability information may be transmitted together with the defer parameter information. As such, the first device 302 could obtain the defer capability of the third device 306 for deferring transmission of the first signal.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the second indication and the third request comprise a second defer time for deferring transmission of a fourth signal from the third device 306 to the second device 304. In such embodiments, the transmission of the fourth signal is to be performed by the third device 306 based on reception of a third signal from the fourth device 308. The second device 304 may obtain the defer parameter information related to the second signal based on detecting the third signal transmitted by the fourth device 308. Alternatively or additionally, the second device 304 may obtain the defer parameter information related to the second signal based on detecting one or more other signals different from the third signal. In some example embodiments, the second device 304 may obtain the defer parameter information related to the first signal based on detecting the transmission of the fourth signal performed by the third device 306 based on reception of the third signal. The third signal may  be a previous activation signal from the activation device used for triggering the collection of information for deferring the transmission of the following AIoT signal (s) . The fourth signal may be a previous AIoT signal from the third device used for collecting the information for deferring the transmission of the following AIoT signal (s) .

[0085] In some example embodiments, the third request may be received via a third signal transmitted by the fourth device 308. In such embodiments, the third device 306 may generate, based on receiving the third signal, a fourth signal comprising the defer capability information of the third device 306.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the transmission of the fourth signal is deferred by the second defer time. The second defer time may be included in the third request. Alternatively, the second defer time may be predefined or preconfigured to the third device 306.

[0087] Alternatively or additionally, the second device 304 may obtain the defer parameter information related to the second signal based on detecting one or more other signals different from the third signal. The one or more other signals may comprise at least one of a channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) , a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , a sounding reference signal (SRS) , or a positioning reference signal (PRS) .

[0088] In some example embodiments, the defer capability information of the third device 306 may comprise an indication of whether the third device 306 supports deferring the transmission of the first signal. Alternatively or additionally, the defer capability information of the third device 306 may comprise a device categorization of the third device 306.

[0089] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may determine at least one of a first propagation delay and a second propagation delay. The first propagation delay may be a propagation delay from the transmitting of the second signal by the fourth device 308 to the receiving of the second signal by the second device 304. The second propagation delay may be a propagation delay from the transmitting of the second signal by the fourth device 308 to the receiving of the first signal by the second device 304. Then, the first device 302 may determine the first defer time based on the at least one of the first propagation delay and the second propagation delay. In such example embodiments, the first defer time could be determined for deferring transmission of the AIoT signal (s) .

[0090] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may determine the first defer time based on a difference between the first propagation delay and the second propagation  delay. Alternatively or additionally, the first device 302 may determine the first defer time to be greater than the first propagation delay. In such embodiments, the second propagation delay may not be available.

[0091] In some example embodiments, the first propagation delay may be determined based on a time difference between a ToA of a propagation path from the fourth device 308 to the second device 304 and a starting time point of the transmitting of the second signal by the fourth device 308. Alternatively or additionally, the first propagation delay may be determined based on a PDP of a channel for the transmission of the second signal between the fourth device 308 and the second device 304. Alternatively or additionally, the first propagation delay may be determined based on location information of the fourth device 308 and the second device 304.

[0092] In some example embodiments, the second propagation delay may be determined based on a ToA of a propagation path from the fourth device 308 to the second device 304 via the third device 306 minus a total time of (i) a maximum response time configured for a delay from the receiving of the second signal to the transmitting of the first signal, and (ii) a starting time point of the transmitting of the second signal by the fourth device 308. Alternatively or additionally, the second propagation delay may be determined based on location information of the fourth device 308, the third device 306 and the second device 304.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the first propagation delay may be associated with a latest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the second signal at the second device 304 which has a power less than a threshold power, wherein the threshold power is a preconfigured value or a value determined based on a maximum propagation path power. Alternatively or additionally, the second propagation delay may be associated with an earliest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the first signal at the second device 304.

[0094] Alternatively or additionally, the first defer time for the transmission of the first signal may be determined based on a set of predetermined fixed values. Alternatively or additionally, the first defer time for the transmission of the first signal may be determined based on a field test.

[0095] In some example embodiments, the first device 302 may determine that the first signal is to be transmitted by the third device 306 with a power ramping-down. In such  embodiments, the first indication transmitted by the first device 302 to the fourth device 308 may further indicate the fourth device 308 to transmit, to the third device 306, the first request further requests the third device 306 to perform the power ramping-down when performing the transmission of the first signal. In some example embodiments, the third device 306 may perform the power ramping-down of the transmission of the first signal when performing the transmission of the first signal.

[0096] By implementing the embodiments of FIG. 3, deferring transmission of an AIoT signal is supported. With the embodiments as described above, the interference of the activation signal could be efficiently reduced for decoding the AIoT signal at the second device without additional requirements of e.g. a multiple antenna configuration, an additional frequency band configuration or a new waveform design. As such, the AIoT signal could be well detected (e.g., with a good SINR) at the second device. This is also helpful for achieving high accuracy positioning service, e.g., the AIoT signal could be positioned more accurately.

[0097] FIG. 4 illustrates an example signaling process 400 of deferring transmission of an AIoT signal in accordance with some other example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that the process 400 may be considered as an embodiment or a more specific example of the process 300 as shown in FIG. 3. For ease of understanding, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 2.

[0098] As shown in FIG. 4, the process 400 may involve a defer control unit 302, a reader device 304, an AIoT device 306 and an activator device 308. The defer control unit 302 may perform a defer control function for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal from the AIoT device 306 responsive to an activation signal from the activator device 308. The defer control unit 302 may be located in the activator device, the reader device, a base station (e.g., a serving gNB) , or an LMF. The reader device 304 and the activator device 308 may be associated with the AIoT device 306.

[0099] The process 400 comprises an information collection phase and an active transmission phase. The information collection phase comprises 405 to 440, and the active transmission phase comprises 445 to 460.

[0100] During the information collection phase, the defer control unit 302 obtains information for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal from the AIoT device 306 to the reader device 304. The transmission of the AIoT signal is to be performed by the AIoT device 306 based on reception of an activation signal from an activator device 308. The information  for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal comprises at least one of defer capability information of the AIoT device 306 or defer parameters from the reader device 304, the AIoT device 306 or the activator device 308.

[0101] At 405, the defer control unit 302 may transmit, to the reader device 304, a request for the defer parameter information. In some example embodiments, the defer parameter information may comprise a PDP of a channel between the activator device 308 and the reader device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the activation signal. Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a PDP of a channel between the AIoT device 306 and the reader device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the AIoT signal.

[0102] Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a time of arrival (ToA) of the activation signal for a first propagation path. The first propagation path may be a latest propagation path from transmission of the activation signal at the activator device 308 to reception of the activation signal at the reader device 304, which has a power less than a threshold power. Since a reflection in the channel between the activator device 308 and the reader device 304 may interfere the AIoT signal, it may be need to see the delay window where the channel power is concentrated and use that time to defer the transmission.

[0103] Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise a ToA of the AIoT signal for a second propagation path, wherein the second propagation path is an earliest propagation path from transmission of the activation signal at the activator device 308 to reception of the AIoT signal at the reader device 304. Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information may comprise location information of at least one of the activator device 308, the AIoT device 306 or the reader device 304.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the request for the defer parameter information in 405 may comprise a resource configuration for measuring the defer parameter information. For example, the resource configuration may comprise at least one of a resource configuration of the activation signal for the defer parameter measurement related to the activation signal, or a resource configuration of the AIoT signal for the defer parameter measurement related to the AIoT signal. Alternatively or additionally, the request for the defer parameter information in 405 may comprise a report configuration for reporting the defer parameter information. For example, the report configuration may indicate what defer parameter information should be reported to the defer control unit 302 after the defer parameter measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the request for the defer parameter information in 405 may comprise location information of the reader device 304.

[0105] At 410, the defer control device 302 may transmit, to the activator device 308, an indication for indicating the activator device 308 to transmit, to the AIoT device 306, a defer capability request for the defer capability information of the AIoT device 306. The defer capability request may comprise a maximum response time for deferring transmission of an activation signal from the AIoT device 306 to the reader device 304. The AIoT device 306 may defer the AIoT signal by the maximum response time so as to avoid the interference of the activation signal to the AIoT signal during the information collection phase. Alternatively, the maximum response time may be predefined or preconfigured to the AIoT device 306.

[0106] In some example embodiments, the defer capability information of the AIoT device 306 may comprise an indication of whether the AIoT device 306 supports deferring the transmission of the AIoT signal, which may be associated with at least one of a device categorization, hardware setting, power status or energy harvesting status of the AIoT device 306. Alternatively or additionally, the defer capability information of the AIoT device 306 may comprise a device categorization of the AIoT device 306. For example, the device categorization of the AIoT device 306 may comprise AIoT Device A, AIoT Device B or AIoT Device C. In some example embodiments, the AIoT Device C may support the defer operation for the transmission of the AIoT signal.

[0107] At 415, the activator device 308 may transmit the defer capability request with the maximum response time to the AIoT device via an activation signal. Based on the request for the defer parameter information in 405, the reader device 304 may detect transmission of the activation signal from the activator device 308. At 420, based on detecting transmission of the activation signal, the reader device 304 may estimate the defer parameters associated with  the activation signal. For example, the defer parameters associated with the activation signal may comprise a PDP of a channel between the activator device 308 and the reader device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the activation signal.

[0108] Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information associated with the activation signal may comprise a ToA of the activation signal for a first propagation path. The first propagation path may be a latest propagation path from transmission of the activation signal at the activator device 308 to reception of the activation signal at the reader device 304, which has a power less than a threshold power. Alternatively, the first propagation path may be a latest propagation path from transmission of the second signal at the fourth device 308 to reception of the second signal at the second device 304, which has a power less than a power of a maximum propagation path power subtracting a threshold power. In some example embodiments, the threshold power may be a preconfigured value or a value determined based on a maximum propagation path power. For example, the threshold power may be configured by a defer control unit or be preconfigured as y%of the maximum propagation path power (i.e., the power of a strongest path) , wherein 0<y<100.

[0109] Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information associated with the activation signal may be obtained based on detecting one or more other signals different from the activation signal for information collection. In some embodiments, the one or more other signals comprise one or more reference signals, which may comprise at least one of a channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) , a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , a sounding reference signal (SRS) , or a positioning reference signal (PRS) via the sidelink or Uu interface.

[0110] At 425, based on receiving the activation signal in 415, the AIoT device 306 may generate an AIoT signal comprising the defer capability information of the AIoT device 306.

[0111] At 430, if the AIoT device 306 supports the defer operation for the transmission of the AIoT signal, the AIoT device 306 may defer the transmission of the AIoT signal by the maximum response time so as to ensure the reader device 304 could receive the AIoT signal with the defer capability information without the interference of the activation signal. Alternatively, in some example embodiments, the maximum response time may be predefined or preconfigured to the AIoT device 306. In some embodiments, the maximum response time can also be used or known for calculation of the propagation delay which is  utilized to optimize the defer time for latency improvement during the active transmission phase.

[0112] Alternatively, in some example embodiments, if the AIoT device 306 does not support the defer operation for the transmission of the AIoT signal, the AIoT device 306 may directly transmit the AIoT signal to the reader device 304. In such embodiments, the activation signal and the AIoT signal may be received by the reader device 304 at the same time, and the reply of the AIoT device 306 (i.e., the defer capability information) may be buried in the activation signal.

[0113] Based on the request for the defer parameter information in 405, the reader device 304 may detect transmission of the AIoT signal from the AIoT device 306. At 435, based on detecting transmission of the AIoT signal, the reader device 304 may estimate the defer parameters associated with the AIoT signal. For example, the defer parameters associated with the AIoT signal may comprise a PDP of a channel between the AIoT device 306 and the reader device 304, i.e., the channel for transmission of the AIoT signal. Alternatively or additionally, the defer parameter information associated with the AIoT signal may comprise a ToA of a propagation path of the AIoT signal, wherein the propagation path is an earliest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 via the AIoT device 306.

[0114] At 440, the reader device 304 may transmit, to the defer control unit 302, information (comprising at least part of the defer capability information of AIoT device and defer parameters) for deferring transmission of an AIoT signal from the AIoT device 306 to the reader device 304. In some example embodiments, the defer control unit 302 may also collect the defer parameter information from the activator device 304 or the AIoT device 306. For example, the defer control unit 302 may estimate the PDP of the channel based on the signal (e.g., a PRS / CSI-RS / SRS / DMRS) transmitted from the reader device 304, and then report the PDP to the defer control unit 302. For another example, the defer control unit 302 may collect location information from at least one of the reader device 304, the AIoT device 306, the activator device 308, or a network device.

[0115] During the active transmission phase, the defer control unit 302 may optimize and determine the defer time to improve latency of transmission of the AIoT signal at least partially based on the defer capability information of the AIoT device 306 and the defer parameters.

[0116] At 445, the defer control unit 302 may determine a defer time for the transmission of the AIoT signal based on at least one of the defer capability information of the AIoT device 203 or defer parameters acquired in the information collection phase. In some example embodiments, the defer control unit 302 may determine at least one of a first propagation delay and a second propagation delay. The first propagation delay (e.g., TActivator-Reader) may be a propagation delay from the transmitting of the activation signal by the activator device 308 to the receiving of the activation signal by the reader device 304. The second propagation delay (e.g., TActivation-IoT-Reader ) may be a propagation delay from the transmitting of the activation signal by the activator device 308 to the receiving of the AIoT signal by the reader device 304. In other words, the second propagation delay may be the sum of the propagation delay from the activator device 304 to the AIoT device 306 and the propagation delay from the AIoT device 306 to the activator device 304.

[0117] In some example embodiments, the first propagation delay may be determined based on a time difference between a ToA of a propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 and a starting time point of the transmitting of the activation signal by the activator device 308. Alternatively or additionally, the first propagation delay may be determined based on a PDP of a channel for the transmission of the activation signal between the activator device 308 and the reader device 304. For example, referring to FIG. 6, the first propagation delay may be the delay where the power of the activation signal starts to decay or the delay where the power of the activation path is lower than a given threshold.

[0118] Alternatively or additionally, the first propagation delay may be determined based on location information of the activator device 308 and the reader device 304. For example, the first propagation delay may be determined based on the distance between the activator device 308 and the reader device 304 calculated based on the location information of the activator device 308 and the reader device 304.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the second propagation delay may be determined based on a ToA of a propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 via the AIoT device 306 minus a total time of (i) a maximum response time configured for a delay from the receiving of the activation signal to the transmitting of the AIoT signal, and (ii) a starting time point of the transmitting of the activation signal by the activator device 308.

[0120] Alternatively or additionally, the second propagation delay may be determined based on location information of the activator device 308, the AIoT device 306 and the reader device 304. For example, first, a total distance may be determined based on the location information of the activator device 308, the AIoT device 306 and the reader device 304, which is the sum of the activator-AIoT distance and the AIoT-reader distance, and then the second propagation delay may be determined based on the total distance and the light speed.

[0121] In some example embodiments, if the AIoT device 306 supports deferring the transmission of the AIoT signal, the defer control unit 302 may determine the defer time based on the at least one of the first propagation delay and the second propagation delay.

[0122] In some example embodiments, the defer control unit 302 may determine the defer time (e.g., Tdefer) based on a difference between the first propagation delay and the second propagation delay. For example, the defer time should not be smaller than max (0, TActivation-Reader -TActivation-IoT-Reader) .

[0123] Alternatively or additionally, the defer control unit 302 may determine the defer time merely based on the first propagation delay, for example, when the second propagation delay is not available. For example, the defer control unit 302 may determine the defer time to be greater than the first propagation delay, i.e., Tdefer should be greater than TActivation-Reader.

[0124] Alternatively or additionally, the defer time for the transmission of the AIoT signal may be determined based on a set of predetermined fixed values. Alternatively or additionally, the first defer time for the transmission of the AIoT signal may be determined based on a field test. For example, the defer time for the transmission of the AIoT signal may be selected based on a set of predetermined fixed values based on a field test, wherein the selected value could prevent the reader device 304 from receiving the activation signal and the AIoT signal at the same time.

[0125] At 450, the defer control unit 302 may transmit an indication for indicating the activator device 308 to transmit a defer request to the AIoT device 306 for deferring the transmission of the AIoT signal by the defer time. The defer time may be included in the indication.

[0126] As for the AIoT Device C, the defer request may be triggered only if the defer time is larger than a threshold (e.g., if Tdefer>0 ) . In some example embodiments, the AIoT  device 306 may determine whether the defer time is greater than a threshold, and based on determining that the defer time is greater than the threshold, perform the transmission of the AIoT signal deferred by the defer time. In such embodiments, if the defer time is not larger than the threshold, it means that the reader device 304 will not receive the activation signal and the AIoT signal at the same time, thus there is no need to defer transmission of the AIoT signal.

[0127] At 455, the activator device 308 may transmit, to the AIoT device 306, the defer request for deferring the transmission of the AIoT signal by the defer time via the activation signal. The defer time may be carried in the activation signal. At 460, based on receiving the activation signal from the activator device 308, the AIoT device 306 may perform, based on the defer request, the transmission of the AIoT signal to the reader device 304 deferred by at least the defer time, so as to prevent the reader device 304 from receiving the activation signal and the AIoT signal at the same time.

[0128] FIG. 5 illustrates an example timing diagram 500 of deferring transmission of an AIoT signal in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In FIG. 5, the defer control unit 302 configures the AIoT device 306 to defer transmission of the AIoT signal for a defer time Tdefer upon reception of the activation signal. T1 refers to the earliest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304. T2 refers to the latest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 which has a power less than a threshold power. T3+T4 refers to the earliest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 via the AIoT device 306. D1 refers to the transmission duration of the activation signal. D2 refers to the transmission duration of the AIoT signal.

[0129] The defer time may be determined based on a difference between a first propagation delay of the latest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 and a second propagation delay of the earliest propagation path from the activator device 308 to the reader device 304 via the AIoT device 306. For example, the defer time may at least satisfy the equation (1) : Tdefer > Max (0, T2 – (T3 +T4) )          (1)

[0130] According to the equation (1) , the defer time Tdefer may be any positive value.

[0131] As can be seen from FIG. 5, the AIoT device 306 performs deferring transmission of the AIoT signal (i.e., the generated signal in response to reception of the activation signal)  by a defer time Tdefer, and the activation signal and the AIoT signal would not arrive at the reader device 304 at the same time.

[0132] FIG. 6 illustrates an example waveform 600 of deferring and power ramping-down an AIoT signal in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In some example embodiments, the AIoT device 306 may perform a power ramping-down of the transmission of the AIoT signal when performing the transmission of the AIoT signal by the defer time.

[0133] Referring to FIG. 6, Specifically, if the power delay profile of the channel for the activation signal exhibits a power decay, transmission of the AIoT signal (also referred to as the tag signal) may be deferred by a duration proportional to the delay where the activation power decay starts, and the AIoT device 306 may perform a power ramping-down of the transmission of the AIoT signal proportional to power decay of the activation channel. In other words, the power of the transmission of the AIoT signal may be ramped down proportional to power decay of the activation channel for power saving whilst ensuring the detection performance of AIoT signal 250 at the reader device 220.

[0134] Under some circumstances, the defer control device 302 may reduce the defer time to start the transmission of AIoT signal with reduced latency, however, it would cause higher interference of the activation signal at the reader device 304. Therefore, based on the power delay profile of channel, the defer control unit 302 could make a better trade-off between the latency of AIoT signal transmission and the interference of the activation signal at the reader device 304.

[0135] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a first device (for example, the defer control unit 302) in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the first device 302 with reference to FIG. 3.

[0136] At block 710, the first device 302 may obtain information for deferring transmission of a first signal from a third device to a second device, wherein the transmission of the first signal is to be performed by the third device based on reception of a second signal from a fourth device. At block 720, the first device 302 may determine, based on the information, a first defer time for the transmission of the first signal. At block 730, the first device 302 may indicate the third device to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time.

[0137] In some example embodiments, the first device may be caused to indicate the third device to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time by: transmitting, to the third device, a first request for deferring the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time.

[0138] In some example embodiments, the first device may be caused to indicate the third device to defer the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time by: transmitting, to the fourth device, a first indication for indicating the fourth device to transmit a first request to the third device for deferring the transmission of the first signal by the first defer time.

[0139] In some example embodiments, the information may comprise at least one of the following: defer capability information of the third device; or defer parameter information associated with at least one of transmission of the first signal and the second signal.
