Description

Battery management system having a battery health status learning function based on current accumulation and a battery health status learning method thereof

[0001] The present invention relates to a battery management system (BMS) and a battery management method, and more particularly, to a battery management system (BMS) having a current accumulation-based battery health state learning function, which learns the actual battery health state (SOH) of a battery pack body based on current accumulation for current generated by charging and discharging a replaced battery pack body when the battery pack body of the battery pack is replaced, corrects the SOH set in the BMS with the learned SOH, and manages the battery of the battery pack body based on the corrected SOH, and a battery health state learning method thereof.

[0002] Secondary batteries are rechargeable batteries, and have been mainly used in mobile devices such as cell phones and laptops that require mobility and portability.

[0003] However, recently, it has been applied to electronic devices such as vacuum cleaners, beam projectors, speakers, and various tools due to its advantages of eliminating power cords and being portable and mobile.

[0004] Typically, secondary batteries are composed of battery packs of cylindrical or square shapes, and the battery packs are composed of a battery pack body including a plurality of battery modules and a battery management system (BMS) that manages the charging and discharging and status of the battery modules.

[0005] The BMS of a battery pack, or secondary battery, manages the battery modules within the battery pack based on the nominal capacity (SOH) set for the battery pack itself. The nominal capacity is the amount of electricity (Ah) obtained by discharging a battery charged at a temperature of 25°C with a specified current to a specified end-of-discharge voltage, and the SOH when the amount of electricity is fully charged is defined as 100%.

[0006] However, as the usage time of the secondary battery increases, the state of health (SOH) of the battery modules that make up the battery pack body deteriorates, that is, the amount of electricity that can be charged to the battery decreases, and the usage time of the electronic device to which the secondary battery is applied decreases.

[0007] In this case, the user can extend the usage time of the electronic device by exchanging the battery pack body at a service center or directly.

[0008] However, since the nominal capacity (SOH) of the battery pack body being replaced may be different, the nominal capacity set in the BMS and the nominal capacity of the replaced battery pack body may be different, which causes a problem in that the BMS cannot properly manage the battery modules of the battery pack body.

[0009] Accordingly, the purpose of the present invention is to provide a battery management system having a current accumulation-based battery health state learning function, which learns the actual battery health state (SOH) of a battery pack body based on current accumulation for current generated by charging and discharging of a battery pack body being replaced when the battery pack body of the battery pack is replaced, corrects a set SOH with the learned SOH, and manages a battery of the battery pack body based on the corrected SOH, and a battery health state learning method thereof.

[0010] In order to achieve the above object, the present invention provides a battery management system having a current integration-based battery health state learning function, which comprises: a power measurement unit connected to a battery pack body and measuring and outputting current and voltage of the battery pack body; a storage unit storing an OCV-SOC table defining an SOC value for each OCV and an initial SOH; and a control module that integrates current values for a certain time unit for each charge and discharge measured through the power measurement unit, calculates a plurality of starting SOCs for each charge and discharge based on the integrated current integration values for each charge and discharge, measures OCV through the power measurement unit, finds an ending SOC, which is an SOC for the measured OCV, in the OCV-SOC table and calculates it, and then calculates an error value, which is an average value of differences between each starting SOC and each ending SOC for each charge and discharge, and corrects the initial SOH based on the error value until the error value becomes less than a preset reference value.

[0011] The above battery management system further includes an interface unit that is connected to an external device and receives the initial SOH from the external device and outputs it to the control module, wherein the control module stores the initial SOH input through the interface unit in the storage unit.

[0012] The control module is characterized in that it includes a current acquisition unit that acquires and outputs a current value for the current supplied from the battery pack body through the current measurement unit of the power measurement unit; a current integration unit that calculates and outputs a current integration value by integrating the current value over a charging time or a discharging time; a first SOC calculation unit that calculates a starting SOC based on the current integration value; an OCV determination unit that monitors whether power is not supplied for a certain period of time or longer through the power measurement unit to determine whether the state is OCV; a second SOC calculation unit that measures OCV, which is a voltage measured through the voltage measurement unit of the power measurement unit in the OCV state when the state is determined to be OCV through the OCV determination unit, and finds and outputs an ending SOC corresponding to the measured OCV from the OCV-SOC table; and a correction unit that corrects the initial SOH according to an error value that is an average value of differences between the starting SOC and the ending SOC.

[0013] The above correction unit is characterized by including a delta OSC calculation unit that calculates and outputs a delta SOC by subtracting the end SOC from the start SOC; a correction condition determination unit that determines whether a plurality of the delta SOCs have the same sign and thus satisfy a correction condition; and a nominal capacity correction unit that calculates an error value, which is an average value for the delta SOCs, and corrects the initial SOH according to the error value when the correction condition is satisfied.

[0014] The above nominal capacity correction unit is characterized in that, if the error value is greater than or equal to a preset first reference value and less than a second reference value, the initial SOH is corrected by subtracting a first SOH reference value from the initial SOH; if the error value is greater than or equal to the preset second reference value and less than a third reference value, the initial SOH is corrected by subtracting a second SOH reference value from the initial SOH; and if the error value is greater than or equal to the preset third reference value, the initial SOH is corrected by subtracting a third SOH reference value from the initial SOH.

[0015] The above correction condition judgment unit is characterized in that it judges that the correction condition is satisfied when the number of the starting SOCs stored is equal to or greater than a preset first number.

[0016] The above correction condition judgment unit is characterized in that, when the OCV state is set while the starting SOC is stored to be less than the first number, the starting SOC is deleted and initialized.

[0017] In order to achieve the above object, a battery health state learning method of a battery management system according to the present invention is characterized by including: a start SOC calculation process in which a control module accumulates current values for each charge and discharge cycle measured through a power measurement unit and calculates a plurality of start SOCs for each charge and discharge cycle based on the accumulated current accumulation values for each charge and discharge cycle; a termination SOC calculation process in which the control module measures OCV through the power measurement unit and references an OCV-SOC table in a storage unit that stores an OCV-SOC table defining an initial SOH and an SOC value for each OCV to find and calculate a termination SOC for the measured OCV in the OCV-SOC table; and a correction process in which the control module calculates an error value which is an average value of differences between each of the start SOC and the end SOC, and corrects the initial SOH according to the error value until the error value becomes less than a preset reference value.

[0018] The above method is characterized in that it further includes an initial SOH acquisition process in which the control module acquires an initial SOH from an external device through an interface unit and stores the acquired SOH in the storage unit.

[0019] The starting SOC calculation process is characterized by including a current acquisition step in which the current acquisition unit of the control module acquires and outputs a current value for the current supplied from the battery pack body through the current measurement unit of the power measurement unit; a current integration step in which the current integration unit of the control module integrates the current value over a charging time or a discharging time and calculates and outputs a current integration value; and a starting SOC calculation step in which the first SOC calculation unit of the control module calculates the starting SOC based on the current integration value.

[0021] The above correction process is characterized by including a delta OSC calculation step in which the delta OSC calculation step of the correction unit calculates and outputs a delta SOC by subtracting the end SOC from each of the start SOCs; a correction condition determination step in which the correction condition determination step of the correction unit determines whether a plurality of the delta SOCs have the same sign and thus satisfy the correction condition; and a nominal capacity correction step in which, if the correction condition is satisfied, the nominal capacity correction step of the correction unit calculates an error value which is an average value for the delta SOCs and corrects the initial SOH according to the error value.

[0022] The above nominal capacity correction step is characterized in that the nominal capacity correction unit corrects the initial SOH by subtracting a first SOH reference value from the initial SOH when the error value is greater than or equal to a first preset reference value and less than a second preset reference value, corrects the initial SOH by subtracting a second SOH reference value from the initial SOH when the error value is greater than or equal to the second preset reference value and less than a third preset reference value, and corrects the initial SOH by subtracting a third SOH reference value from the initial SOH when the error value is greater than or equal to the third preset reference value.

[0023] In the above correction condition determination step, the correction condition determination unit is characterized in that it determines that the correction condition is satisfied when the number of the starting SOCs is stored equal to or greater than a preset first number.

[0024] The above correction process is characterized in that, in the correction condition judgment step, if the OCV state is set while the starting SOC is stored to be less than the first number, the correction condition judgment unit further includes a correction initialization step in which the starting SOC is deleted and initialized.

[0025] The present invention has the effect of enabling the BMS to more accurately and precisely manage the battery based on the actual battery nominal capacity of the replaced battery pack body when only the battery pack body is replaced in the battery pack, since the BMS learns the nominal capacity of the replaced battery pack body and applies it to the BMS.

[0026] In addition, the present invention corrects the nominal capacity of the battery of the replaced battery pack body based on lightweight learning that applies current accumulation, so it has the effect of being optimized for a BMS that uses a GPU with a small memory capacity and low performance.

[0027] Figure 1 is a drawing showing the configuration of a battery management system having a current accumulation-based battery health status learning function according to the present invention.

[0028] Figure 2 is a flowchart illustrating a battery health status learning method based on current accumulation of a battery management system according to the present invention.

[0029] Figure 3 is a flowchart showing a nominal capacity correction method among the current accumulation-based battery health status learning methods of the battery management system according to the present invention.

[0030] Figure 4 is a flowchart showing a SOH correction method according to an error value among the nominal capacity correction methods of a battery management system according to the present invention.

[0031] Referring to the attached drawings below, the configuration and operation of a battery management system having a current accumulation-based SOH learning function according to the present invention are described in detail, and a current accumulation-based SOH learning method of the battery management system is described.

[0032] Figure 1 is a drawing showing the configuration of a battery management system having a current accumulation-based battery health status learning function according to the present invention.

[0033] A battery pack according to the present invention includes a battery pack body (10) and a battery management system (BMS) (20).

[0034] The battery pack body (10) is formed in a square or circular shape and includes a plurality of battery modules, and has a nominal capacity according to the plurality of battery modules. For example, the nominal capacity of the battery pack body (10) may be 10,000 mA, 20,000 mA, etc., and when it is 10,000 mA, the SOH will be 100%. Depending on the use of the battery pack, the nominal capacity of the battery may decrease, and as the nominal capacity decreases, the SOH will also decrease.

[0035] Accordingly, the BMS (20) stores the initial SOH of the battery pack body (10) and performs battery management based on the initial SOH. The battery management operation of the BMS (20) is well known to those skilled in the art, so a detailed description is omitted.

[0036] However, when the battery pack body (10) is replaced, the SOH for the nominal capacity of the replaced battery pack body (10) may be different from the SOH for the nominal capacity of the battery pack body (10) known to the BMS (20).

[0037] The BMS (20) of the present invention corrects the initial SOH to converge to the actual SOH of the battery pack body (10) by using a current accumulation method that accumulates the current supplied or being supplied according to the charging and discharging of the battery pack body (10), even if the SOH for the nominal capacity of the battery pack body (10) and the initial SOH for the nominal capacity known by the BMS (20) are different.

[0038] The configuration and operation of the BMS (20) of the present invention are described in detail.

[0039] The BMS (20) of the present invention includes a storage unit (110), a power measurement unit (130), and a control module (140), and may further include an interface unit (120) according to an embodiment.

[0040] The storage unit (110) includes a program area for storing a control program for controlling an operation according to the present invention, a temporary area for temporarily storing data generated during execution of the control program, and a data area for semi-permanently storing data required for executing the control program and data generated during execution of the control program.

[0041] The above storage unit (110) stores the initial SOH, and stores the measured current value, current integration value, calculated start SOC, end SOC, delta SOC, error value, various reference values, etc.

[0042] The interface unit (120) provides a connection means with an external device, so that the control module (140) can perform data communication with the connected external device. According to the present invention, the interface unit (120) receives an initial SOC from an external device and provides it to the control module (140), so that the control module (140) can store the initial SOC in the storage unit (110).

[0043] The power measuring unit (130) includes a current measuring unit (131) and a voltage measuring unit (132), and measures the external power, i.e., current and voltage, supplied to the battery pack body (10) in charging mode, and measures the power supplied to the load from the battery pack body (10) in discharging mode and outputs it to the control module (140).

[0044] In addition, the power measurement unit (130) measures the voltage of the battery pack body (10) in an open circuit voltage (OCV) state when there is no power supplied to the load, and outputs the OCV to the control module (140).

[0045] The control module (140) includes a current acquisition unit (141), a current accumulation unit (142), a first SOC calculation unit (144), an OCV judgment unit (145), a second SOC calculation unit (146), and a correction unit (150), and further includes a nominal capacity acquisition unit (143) according to an embodiment, thereby controlling the overall operation of the BMS (20) according to the present invention.

[0046] Specifically, the current acquisition unit (141) acquires the current value for the current supplied to the battery pack body (10) and the current supplied from the battery body (10) through the current measurement unit (131) of the power measurement unit (130) according to the charge / discharge mode and outputs it to the current accumulation unit (142).

[0047] The current accumulation unit (142) accumulates the current value of a certain time unit input from the current acquisition unit (141) for the charging time or the discharging time, and outputs the accumulated current accumulation value to the first SOC calculation unit (144).

[0048] The nominal capacity acquisition unit (143) receives nominal capacity information of the replaced battery pack body (10) from an external device via the interface unit (120) and stores the initial SOH for the nominal capacity in the storage unit (110). At this time, the nominal capacity of the nominal capacity information may be equal to or less than the actual capacity of the battery pack body (10). Typically, the actual capacity will be less than the nominal capacity.

[0049] The first SOC calculation unit (144) calculates the SOC (hereinafter referred to as “starting SOC”) using the current integration value input from the current integration unit (142) and outputs it to the correction unit (150).

[0050] The OCV judgment unit (145) determines whether the OCV state is one in which no power is supplied to the load after completion of charging and discharging through the power measurement unit (130).

[0051] If the current state is determined to be an OCV state through the OCV judgment unit (145), the second SOC calculation unit (146) measures the OCV through the voltage measurement unit (132) of the power measurement unit (130), and calculates the SOC (hereinafter referred to as “final SOC”) corresponding to the measured OCV by referring to the OCV-SOC table stored in the storage unit (110) and outputs it to the correction unit (150).

[0052] The correction unit (150) includes a delta SOC calculation unit (151), a correction condition judgment unit (152), and a nominal capacity correction unit (153), and calculates an error value, which is an average value of the differences between the start SOC and the end SOC, and corrects the initial SOH according to the error value until the error value becomes less than a preset reference value.

[0053] Specifically, the delta SOC calculation unit (151) subtracts the end SOC output from the second SOC calculation unit (146) from each of the plurality of start SOCs input from the first SOC calculation unit (144) to output a plurality of delta SOCs.

[0054] The compensation condition judgment unit (152) judges whether the compensation condition is satisfied based on the number of delta SOC values calculated by the delta SOC calculation unit (151) and the number of start SOCs output from the first SOC calculation unit (144).

[0055] The above correction conditions are that the number of the starting SOCs must be equal to or greater than a preset first number, each of the plurality of delta SOC values must be equal to or greater than a preset correction reference value, and the signs of the plurality of delta SOCs must match either + or -. It is preferable that the first number be equal to or greater than 3.

[0056] The compensation condition judgment unit (152) initializes the compensation process by deleting the start SOC, end SOC, delta SOC, etc. when the compensation condition is not satisfied.

[0057] The nominal capacity correction unit (153) operates when the correction condition is satisfied through the correction condition judgment unit (152), calculates an error value, which is an average value for the delta SOCs, and corrects the initial SOH according to the error value.

[0058] The above nominal capacity correction unit (153) corrects the initial SOH by subtracting the first SOH reference value from the initial SOH if the error value is greater than or equal to the first preset reference value and less than the second preset reference value, corrects the initial SOH by subtracting the second SOH reference value from the initial SOH if the error value is greater than or equal to the second preset reference value and less than the third preset reference value, and corrects the initial SOH by subtracting the third SOH reference value from the initial SOH if the error value is greater than or equal to the third preset reference value. For example, the first reference value may be 1%, the second reference value may be 2%, the third reference value may be 5%, the first SOH reference value may be 1%, the second SOH reference value may be 2%, and the third SOH reference value may be 5%.

[0059] Since the nominal capacity correction unit (153) repeatedly corrects the initial SOH according to the error value until the error value becomes less than a preset reference value, the initial SOH will converge to the actual SOH of the battery pack body (10).

[0060] Figure 2 is a flowchart illustrating a battery health status learning method based on current accumulation of a battery management system according to the present invention.

[0061] Referring to FIG. 2, first, the control module (140) sets the initial SOH or the existing initial SOH input to an external device through the interface unit (120) as the SOH for the nominal capacity of the battery pack body (10) (S111).

[0062] After setting the initial SOH, the control module (140) monitors whether charging and discharging are started through the power measurement unit (130) (S113), and when charging and discharging are started, the control module (140) calculates the current integration value by performing current integration until charging and discharging is finished through the current measurement unit (131) of the power measurement unit (130) (S115, S117).

[0063] When charging and discharging are completed, the control module (140) calculates the starting SOC by applying the calculated current integration value (S119).

[0064] After the above charging and discharging is completed, the control module (140) monitors whether it is in the OCV state (S121), and if it is in the OCV state, determines whether the number of starting SOCs according to the number of charging and discharging is greater than or equal to a standard number (S123). That is, the control module (140) determines whether charging and discharging have been performed more than a standard number of times.

[0065] If the number of charge / discharge cycles exceeding the standard number has not been performed, the control module (140) removes the starting SOC stored in the database (DB) of the storage unit (110) and initializes the SOH correction process (S125).

[0066] On the other hand, if charge / discharge is performed more than the standard number of times, the control module (140) measures the OCV in the OCV state and finds and loads the end SOC corresponding to the measured OCV from the OCV-SOC table of the storage unit (110) (S127).

[0067] When the start SOC and the end SOC are acquired, the control module (140) determines the SOH correction amount based on the delta SOC, which is the difference between each of the multiple start SOCs and the end SOC, and reflects the determined SOH correction amount in the initial SOC to correct it (S129).

[0068] Figure 3 is a flowchart showing a nominal capacity correction method among the current accumulation-based battery health status learning methods of the battery management system according to the present invention.

[0069] Referring to Fig. 3, the control module (140) measures OCV through the power measurement unit (130) (S311).

[0070] When OCV is measured, the control module (140) refers to the OCV-SOC table and calculates the end SOC corresponding to the measured OCV (S313).

[0071] Once the end SOC is calculated, the control module (140) calculates multiple delta SOCs by subtracting the end SOC from each of the multiple start SOCs (S315).

[0072] When the above multiple delta SOCs are calculated, the control module (140) checks whether each delta SOC exceeds a preset correction reference value (S317).

[0073] If any one of the delta SOCs is below the reference value, the control module (140) removes the start SOC, end SOC, and delta SOC from the storage unit (110) to initialize the SOH correction process (S325).

[0074] If the above delta SOC is greater than the correction reference value, the control module (140) checks whether the sign of the delta SOC is the same sign and determines whether the correction condition is satisfied (S319).

[0075] If the compensation condition is not satisfied, the control module (140) performs the SOH compensation process initialization step (S325) described above and terminates the process.

[0076] On the other hand, if the delta SOCs have the same sign, the control module (140) removes the maximum and minimum values among the delta SOCs (S321) and then calculates the error value, which is the average value for the delta SOCs (S322).

[0077] When the error value is calculated, the control module (140) corrects the initial SOH according to the error value (S323).

[0078] Figure 4 is a flowchart showing a SOH correction method according to an error value among the nominal capacity correction methods of a battery management system according to the present invention.

[0079] Referring to FIG. 4, the control module (140) determines whether the error value is less than the first reference value (e.g., 1%) (S411), greater than or equal to the first reference value but less than the second reference value (e.g., 2%) (S413), greater than or equal to the second reference value but less than the third reference value (e.g., 5%) (S415), or greater than or equal to the third reference value (S417).

[0080] If the error value is less than the first reference value, the control module (140) terminates the process and does not perform initial SOH correction.

[0081] If the error value is greater than or equal to the first reference value and less than or equal to the second reference value, the control module (140) subtracts the first SOH reference value (e.g., 1%) from the initial SOH stored in the storage unit (110) and then stores it in the storage unit (110) as the initial SOH again (S419).

[0082] On the other hand, if the error value is greater than or equal to the second reference value and less than the third reference value, the control module (140) subtracts the second SOH reference value (e.g., 2%) from the initial SOH stored in the storage unit (110) and then stores it in the storage unit (110) as the initial SOH again (S421).

[0083] In addition, if the error value is greater than the third reference value, the control module (140) subtracts the third SOH reference value (e.g., 5%) from the initial SOH stored in the storage unit (110) and then stores it in the storage unit (110) as the initial SOH again (S423).

[0084] Meanwhile, those skilled in the art will readily understand that the present invention is not limited to the aforementioned typical preferred embodiments, but can be implemented by various improvements, modifications, substitutions, or additions without departing from the spirit of the present invention. If such improvements, modifications, substitutions, or additions fall within the scope of the appended claims, the technical ideas thereof shall also be deemed to belong to the present invention.
