AI Technical Summary
The use of 6PPD as an antiozonant in tire rubber compositions raises environmental concerns due to its oxidation into quinones, which pose health risks to aquatic organisms, necessitating the development of alternative compositions that reduce or eliminate 6PPD while maintaining ozone resistance and improving rolling resistance.
A sidewall composition for tire sidewalls is developed, comprising a rubber composition, a silane-grafted polyolefin composition dispersed in the rubber, and an additive composition for curing and stabilization. This composition is formulated to improve rolling resistance and reduce or eliminate the use of 6PPD while maintaining equal or better ozone resistance.
The proposed sidewall composition effectively reduces rolling resistance and eliminates the environmental concerns associated with 6PPD by using silane-grafted polyolefin, thereby providing improved tire performance and environmental sustainability.

TIRE SIDEWALL COMPOSITIONCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application Serial No. 63 / 536,581 filed September 5, 2023, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated in its entirety by reference herein.TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] In at least one aspect, the present invention is related to compositions for forming tire sidewalls.BACKGROUND
[0003] Tires include several components, such as the tire sidewalls and tread blocks are formed from rubber compositions. Such rubber compositions include natural rubber, synthetic rubbers, and various additives for curing and stabilization. A particularly useful additive is the antiozonant 6PPD. Although 6PPD works well in mitigating the deleterious effects of ozone on tire rubber, it has been found to raise some environmental concerns. It has recently been found that 6PPD is oxidized to certain quinones that present a health risk to aquatic organisms.
[0004] Accordingly, there is a need for improved tire component compositions that avoid or reduce the amounts of 6PPD used in tire components.SUMMARY
[0005] In at least one aspect, a sidewall composition for forming tire sidewalls is provided. The sidewall composition includes a rubber composition, a silane-grafted polyolefin composition and / or residues thereof dispersed in the rubber composition, and an additive composition for curing and / or stabilization. Advantageously, sidewalls can be formed from the sidewall composition with improved rolling resistance while reducing or eliminating the use of 6PPD with equal or better ozone resistance.
[0006] In another aspect, a method for forming a sidewall is provided. The method includes a step of providing a sidewall composition as set forth above for forming tire sidewalls. The sidewall composition includes a rubber composition, a silane-grafted polyolefin composition and / or residues thereof dispersed in the rubber composition, and an additive composition for curing and / or stabilization. The sidewall composition is formed by compounding its components. The sidewall composition is extruded after mixing into sidewall sheets. A pre-molded tire is constructed from tire components including the sidewall sheets. The pre-molded tire is molded and cured to form the tire.
