Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD OF MICRO-LED DISPLAY WITH THREE-DIMENSIONAL MICRO NANO WAVEGUIDE STRUCTURETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the technical field of displays, in particular to a micro light-emitting diode ( “LED” ) display projection system and a process of projecting images from the micro-LED display system with a three-dimensional ( “3D” ) micro nano waveguide structure.BACKGROUND

[0002] Display technologies are becoming increasingly important in today’s commercial electronic devices. These display panels are widely used in stationary large screens such as liquid crystal display televisions ( “LCD TVs” ) and organic light emitting diode televisions ( “OLED TVs” ) as well as portable electronic devices such as laptop personal computers, smartphones, tablets and wearable electronic devices.

[0003] An LED chip generally includes an Organic Light-Emitting Diode ( “OLED” ) chip, a Mini Light-Emitting Diode (Sub-millimeter Light-Emitting Diode) chip or a micro-LED (Micro Meter Light-Emitting Diode) chip and the like. LED is widely applied in the field of illumination. As the LED display screen gradually permeates towards the high-end market, the light emitting efficiency requirement of the LED display screen device is higher.

[0004] Pixels are composed of small squares of an image, and the small squares have a clear position and are assigned color values, and the color and position of the small squares determine the appearance of the image. The pixels may be viewed as inseparable units or elements throughout the image. Inseparable means that a pixel cannot be further cut into smaller units or elements, which are present in a single-color cell. Each dot matrix image contains a quantity of pixels that determine the size of the image presented on the screen.

[0005] The micro-LED display technology relates to micron-scale LED pixel units, which are assembled to a driving panel to form a high-density LED display array. The micro-LED display technology herein can also be referred to as μ-LED display technology. Since the micro-LED chip has attributes such as small in size, high in integration level, self-luminous, etc., the micro-LED chip has greater advantages in terms of brightness, resolution,  contrast, energy consumption, service life, response speed, thermal stability and the like compared with an LCD and an OLED. In some approaches, the early LED display screen pixels are formed by combining LEDs with three primary colors of red, green and blue.

[0006] In some approaches, in order to improve the efficiency of the light emitting display system, individual micro-lenses may be used on top of each of the pixels of a micro-LED chip and other projection lenses may further be configured for focusing, magnifying and projecting light to form an image. Such approaches need individual formation of the micro-lenses and there is no coordination or control between light projections from different pixels. Additional projection lenses may also reduce the portability of the light emitting display system. In some situations, the formation of the micro-lenses may involve complicated processing steps. Therefore, a new projection system is needed, so that the image quality and light transmission efficiency of the light emitting display system can be improved, and the size of the light emitting display system can be reduced.

[0007] As such, it would be desirable to provide the light emitting display system and method that address the above-mentioned drawbacks, amongst others.SUMMARY

[0008] There is a need for improved display device designs that improve upon, and help to address the issues and shortcomings of the display systems, such as those as described above. In particular, there is a need for a micro-LED pixel display system with improved image quality, projection efficiency, and smaller footprint.

[0035] Numerous details are described herein in order to provide a thorough understanding of the example embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings. However, some embodiments may be practiced without many of the specific details, and the scope of the claims is only limited by those features and aspects specifically recited in the claims. Furthermore, well-known processes, components, and materials have not been described in exhaustive detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure pertinent aspects of the embodiments described herein.

[0036] The present application relates to the technical field of micro-LED display, and discloses a micro-LED display system and a projection method thereof. Specifically, how to form a magnified image with a high quality from a three-dimensional optical structure is disclosed herein.

[0037] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, micro-nano optics technology is applied which focuses on the manipulation and control of light on a microscopic and nanoscopic scale. Micro-nano optics technology may be used to develop and analyze optical components and systems with features in the micrometer and sub-micrometer range, such as lenses, waveguides, filters, and diffractive optics. Micro-nano optics technology may also make use of advanced fabrication techniques, such as lithography and e-beam lithography, to produce and assemble these components. Micro-nano optics technology may also involve the study of micro-nano-photonics and plasmonics, which involve the manipulation of light on a nanoscale. Micro-nano optics technology may make use of nanomaterials and nanostructures, such as nanowires, nanotubes, nanoparticles, and nanocrystals, to manipulate light. Micro-nano optics technology may make use of advanced computational techniques, such as finite-difference time-domain and transfer matrix methods, to simulate and analyze optical systems.

[0043] In some embodiments, micro-LED display chip 210 includes multiple micro-LED pixel units forming a micro-LED pixel unit array. Each micro-LED pixel unit may emit an individual light beam that passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220.3D micro nano optical structure 220 may project light beams individually emitted from micro-LED pixel units to the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220. For example, light beams 231 through 235 that are emitted by micro-LED pixel units 211 through 215, respectively, are projected to the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220. In some embodiments, the direction, width, and exiting point of each of light beams 231 through 235 may be controlled or manipulated by 3D micro nano optical structure 220. Accordingly, light  beams 231 through 235 may be projected out from top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 as parallel light beams 231’ through 235’ with fixed widths, toward designated directions, and from specific points.

[0044] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 220 may include multiple designated paths for light beams emitted from multiple micro-LED pixel units to propagate along. Each light beam emitted from a corresponding micro-LED pixel unit propagates along a corresponding path within 3D micro nano optical structure 220. For example, 3D micro nano optical structure 220 includes designated paths for light beams 231 through 235 to propagate along. Light beams 231 through 235 emitted from micro-LED pixel units 211 through 215 each propagates along a corresponding path within 3D micro nano optical structure 220. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 220 may be configured to make light beams 231 through 235 propagate along designated paths within 3D micro nano optical structure 220, respectively. In some embodiments, the designated paths are predetermined by the internal structure of 3D micro nano optical structure 220. In some embodiments, the designated path is a straight line path, a curved line path, or a polyline path.

[0045] For example, light beam 231 emitted by micro-LED pixel unit 211 passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220 and is projected out of the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 at a specific point 241 as parallel light beam 231’. Parallel light beam 231’ maintains the width and direction of light beam 231, and the designated path of light beam 231 is a straight line path.

[0046] For example, light beam 232 emitted by micro-LED pixel unit 212 passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220 and is projected out of the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 at a specific point 242 as parallel light beam 232’. 3D micro nano optical structure 220 expands the width of light beam 232 within 3D micro nano optical structure 220 to form parallel light beam 232’, making the fixed width of parallel light beam 232’ different from the fixed width of parallel light beam 231’.

[0047] For example, light beam 233 emitted by micro-LED pixel unit 213 passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220 and is projected out of the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 at a specific point 243 as parallel light beam 233’. Light beam 234 emitted by micro-LED pixel unit 214 passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220 and is projected out of the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 at  specific point 243 as parallel light beam 234’. 3D micro nano optical structure 220 changes the direction of light beams 233 and 234 within 3D micro nano optical structure 220 without using a prism. Accordingly, the directions of parallel light beams 233’ and 234’ are different from the direction of parallel light beams 231’. In some embodiments, the designated paths of light beams 233 and 234 intersect with each other within (or on the top surface) at specific point 243 of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 without interfering with each other (e.g., cross talk between light beams 233 and 234) .

[0048] For example, light beam 235 emitted by micro-LED pixel unit 215 passes through 3D micro nano optical structure 220 and is projected out of the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 220 at a specific point 245 as parallel light beam 235’. 3D micro nano optical structure 220 changes the direction of light beam 235 multiple times within 3D micro nano optical structure 220 without using a prism, to form parallel light beam 235’. In some embodiments, the designated path of light beam 235 is a polyline path.

[0049] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 220 may transmit and magnify a light beam from a micro-LED pixel unit. In addition, 3D micro nano optical structure 220 may greatly reduce the dimension of micro-LED display system 200 compared with other micro-LED display system using individual lenses or other structures to control the width and direction of light beams.

[0050] FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary internal structure of a 3D micro nano optical structure 320 in a three-dimensional schematic view according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 in FIG. 3 may be 3D micro nano optical structure 220 as described above with reference to FIG. 2.

[0051] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may be composed of periodic arrangements of materials that are arranged in a lattice-like structure. In some embodiments, the materials of 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may include semiconductors, metals, and / or dielectric materials. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may be a 3D photonic crystal waveguide. In some embodiments, the thickness of 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may be about 0.01 to about 5 millimeters. A person having ordinary skills in the art would understand 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may also be other optical element having similar properties and characteristics that allows the control and manipulation of light, such as refraction, reflection, and diffraction.

[0052] As shown in FIG. 3, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 includes a grid-like structure with rods 321 extending along X direction in one layer and rods 322 extending along Y direction in another layer. Two types of layers 325 may be alternatively placed in a repeating pattern along Z direction, one of which consists of multiple X-direction rods 321 and the other of which consists of multiple Y-direction rods 322, respectively. Layers 325 of 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may be parallel to the top surface of micro-LED display chip 210 as described in FIG. 2. In some embodiments, X-direction rods 321 and Y-direction rods 322 may also be parallel to the top surface of micro-LED display chip 210 as described in FIG. 2. X direction is perpendicular to Y direction, and Z direction is perpendicular to both X direction and Y direction. In some embodiments, X-direction rods 321 and Y-direction rods 322 could be rods with a cubic, rectangular, oval, or circular cross-section. In some embodiments, multiple modified units may be formed within X-direction rods 321 and / or Y-direction rods 322.

[0053] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 may be manufactured by a multi-layer stack etching process. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 and micro-LED display chip 210 as described in FIG. 2 may be integrally formed during the same etching process. In some embodiments, micro-LED display chip 210 is formed by an array of micro-LED structures etching from a piece of semiconductor material, where each of the micro-LED structures forms a micro-LED pixel unit as described in FIG. 2. In some embodiments, multi-layer micro structure etching is continued to be performed on the micro-LED structures by photolithography etching or ion beam etching, forming 3D micro nano optical structure 320 on top of micro-LED display chip 210. Accordingly, 3D micro nano optical structure 320 and micro-LED display chip 210 may be integrally packaged to form a pixel-level optical waveguide device.

[0054] FIGs. 4A and 4B illustrate exemplary side schematic views of an internal structure of a 3D micro nano optical structure 420 showing multiple photonic crystal units, according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 420 in FIGs. 4A and 4B may be 3D micro nano optical structure 220 or 320 as described above with reference to FIGs. 2 and 3.

[0055] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 420 (e.g., a 3D photonic crystal waveguide) may include an array of photonic crystal units (e.g., a photonic crystal unit 401) , as shown in FIG. 4A. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical  structure 420 (e.g., a 3D photonic crystal waveguide) may include band gaps along all directions that prohibit the propagation of light beams. Due to the band gap properties of 3D micro nano optical structure 420, light of specific wavelengths may be transmitted along the modified units formed within 3D micro nano optical structure 420. Accordingly, the control or manipulation of light on a micro nano level may be achieved by the design and arrangement of the position and size of the modified units within 3D micro nano optical structure 420.

[0056] As shown in FIG. 4B, 3D micro nano optical structure 420 includes an array of photonic crystal units (e.g., photonic crystal unit 401) , and the array of the photonic crystal units comprises multiple modified photonic crystal units (e.g., a modified photonic crystal unit 402) . In some embodiments, one or more modified photonic crystal units forms a designated path for light beams to propagate within 3D micro nano optical structure 420. Light beams may be transmitted along the path formed by modified photonic crystal units and will changes the width and / or direction when the path formed by modified photonic crystal units changes its width and / or direction. In some embodiments, the scale of each photonic crystal unit 401 is about 100 nanometers to about 1 micrometer.

[0057] In some embodiments, modified units may be formed within X-direction rods 321 and / or Y-direction rods 322 as described in FIG. 3. One or more modified units formed within X-direction rods 321 and / or Y-direction rods 322 form the designated paths for the light beams to propagate within 3D micro nano optical structure 420.

[0058] FIGs. 5A and 5B illustrate exemplary side schematic views of a micro-LED display system 500 showing light beams emitted from multiple micro-LED pixel units of a micro-LED display chip passing through and being controlled by a 3D micro nano optical structure 520, according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, micro-LED display system 500 includes a micro-LED display chip (not shown) that comprises a plurality of micro-LED pixel units (e.g., micro-LED pixel units 511 through 514) forming a micro-LED pixel unit array. In some embodiments, micro-LED display system 500 further includes 3D micro nano optical structure 520 formed on top of the micro-LED display chip. In some embodiments, micro-LED display system 500 in FIGs. 5A and 5B may be micro-LED display system 200 as described above with reference to FIG. 2. In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 520 in FIGs. 5A and 5B may be 3D micro  nano optical structure 220, 320, or 420 as described above with reference to FIGs. 2 through 4B.

[0059] In some embodiments, 3D micro nano optical structure 520 includes multiple internal light paths designed for light emitted by micro-LED pixel units to pass through. Each internal light path corresponds to a micro-LED pixel unit, which allows a light emitted by the micro-LED pixel unit to propagate along. In some embodiments, the light passing through 3D micro nano optical structure 520 may be projected to a screen 550 or to a user’s eyes.

[0060] For example, as shown in FIG. 5A, 3D micro nano optical structure 520 includes a first light path corresponding to micro-LED pixel unit 511 that allows a light beam 531 to transmit through 3D micro nano optical structure 520, where light 531 may be projected to screen 550 to form a light spot 551. A second light path corresponding to micro-LED pixel unit 512 that allows a light beam 532 to transmit through 3D micro nano optical structure 520, where light 532 may be projected to screen 550 to form a light spot 552. The first light path for light beam 531 is a straight line path, and the second light path for light beam 532 is a polyline path. In some embodiments, light beam 532 deflects at a point 501, and the direction of light beam 532 may turn, e.g., 45 degrees, to the left at point 501. In some embodiments, the first light path for light beam 531 and the second light path for light beam 532 intersect with each other at a point 502. In some embodiments, light beam 531 and light beam 532 may not interfere or cross-talk with each other.

[0061] For example, as shown in FIG. 5B, 3D micro nano optical structure 520 includes a third light path corresponding to micro-LED pixel unit 513 that allows a light beam 533 to transmit through 3D micro nano optical structure 520. The third light path for light beam 533 splits at a point 503 into a light path for a sub light beam 533a and a light path for a sub light beam 533b. The light path for sub light beam 533a changes direction at a point 504, and the light path for sub light beam 533b changes direction at a point 505. Accordingly, light beam 533 has two separate exiting points on the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 520, forms two separate parallel light beams 533a and 533b when exiting 3D micro nano optical structure 520, and finally projects to screen 550 to form two separate light spots 553a and 553b.

[0062] For example, as further shown in FIG. 5B, 3D micro nano optical structure 520 includes a fourth light path corresponding to micro-LED pixel unit 514 that allows a light  beam 534 to transmit through 3D micro nano optical structure 520. The fourth light path for light beam 534 expands or splits at point 506 and the width of light beam 534 changes at point 506. Accordingly, the light beam 534 finally projects to screen 550 to form a light spot 554, which is larger than each of light spots 551 through 553b as described in FIGs. 5A and 5B.

[0063] In some embodiments, the light paths for light beams 531 through 534 may be internally designed within 3D micro nano optical structure 520 by arranging multiple modified photonic crystal units along light paths, as discussed in FIG. 4. Accordingly, the directions and widths of light beams can be controlled by the design and arrangement of modified photonic crystal units within 3D micro nano optical structure 520. In addition, the light exiting points on the top surface of 3D micro nano optical structure 520 would also be controlled by designing the light path through the arrangement of modified photonic crystal units.

[0064] In some embodiments, an optical lens array is not needed on the micro-LED display chip when the 3D micro nano optical structure is implemented. According to the internal structure of the 3D micro nano optical structure, the transmission path of light emitted from each micro-LED pixel unit may be designed and controlled. Compared with micro-LED display chip with multiple optical lenses, the micro-LED display chip with the 3D micro nano optical structure disclosed herein has the characteristic of small size and high light efficiency.

[0065] It is understood by those skilled in the art that, the micro-LED display system is not limited by the structure (s) mentioned above, and may include more or less components than those as illustrated, or some components may be combined, or a different component may be utilized.

[0066] The above descriptions are merely embodiments of the present disclosure, and the present disclosure is not limited thereto. A modifications, equivalent substitutions and improvements made without departing from the conception and principle of the present disclosure shall fall within the protection scope of the present disclosure.

[0067] Further embodiments also include various subsets of the above embodiments including embodiments as shown in FIGs. 1 through 5B combined or otherwise re-arranged in various other embodiments.

[0068] Although the detailed description contains many specifics, these should not be construed as limiting the scope of the disclosure but merely as illustrating different embodiments and aspects of the disclosure. It should be appreciated that the scope of the disclosure includes other embodiments not discussed in detail above. For example, the approaches described above may be applied to the integration of functional devices other than LEDs and OLEDs with control circuitry other than pixel drivers. Embodiments of non-LED devices include vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) , photodetectors, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) , silicon photonic devices, power electronic devices, and distributed feedback lasers (DFB) . Embodiments of other control circuitry include current drivers, voltage drivers, trans-impedance amplifiers, and logic circuits.
