Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR AEROBAT UE DRIFT WARNINGTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the disclosure generally relate to wireless communication, and more particularly, to methods and apparatus for detecting and dealing with a drift of an aerobat user equipment (UE) .BACKGROUND

[0002] Unmanned aerobat vehicles (or UAVs for short) or drones are becoming more and more common. An Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) is a system for supporting a flight and other operations of a UAV. An UAS may include a UAV and a UAV controller. UAS to UAS communication is one of the central pieces of a UAS Traffic Management (UTM) system or node.

[0003] American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) recently released F3411 standard specification for remote identity (ID) and tracking. Two types of remote ID are defined in this specification: broadcast and network.

[0004] A UAS equipped with WiFi or Bluetooth radio can continuously transmit its broadcast remote ID data. Such a broadcast advertisement allows a UAS to discover other UAS within its vicinity and establish a connection with its neighbors. A broadcast remote ID of a UAS also allows devices on the ground to know the presence of the UAS within their vicinity.

[0005] A network remote ID, on the other hand, is useful for systems and services, such as UAS flight planning, coordination and deconfliction, and etc. For example, a UAS Service Supplier (USS) or a service provider will use a network remote ID of a UAS to establish a network connection with the UAS. Once a network connection is established, the UAS will be constantly in contact with the USS or service provider and share its current location. A USS or service provider can also share airspace alerts with the UAS over the network connection or alternate routes / paths in situations when the UAS cannot continue on its original route.

[0006] It makes sense to take advantage of cellular networking infrastructure, which is available in every country with nation-wide coverage, to support UAS communications. According to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , ubiquitous coverage, high reliability and efficient quality of service management, robust security, and seamless mobility are critical factors to supporting UAS command and control functions. However, performance requirements in terms of coverage, latency, and reliability need to be tested before cellular network supported UAS communication is adopted as  a reliable option for critical communication needs such as “command and control” , and for critical applications such as “detect and avoid (DAA) ” .

[0007] In order to improve an efficiency of flight path plan, a direct UAV-to-UAV communication based DAA support solution or a network-assisted DAA support solution (e.g., as specified in 3GPP Rel-18 TR 23.700-58 V2.0.0) are introduced to enhance UAV UE tracking capability. In the network-assisted DAA solution, a USS can request a cellular communication system (such as 5G system) to perform a DAA between any two UAV UEs whose flight paths may be overlapped or within the same area. The network-assisted DAA is useful, for scenarios where regulations might not consider a device to device solution sufficient or for scenarios where the availability of proximity communication (e.g., PC5) connectivity in all UAVs cannot be assumed. It would be advantage to enhance a network-assisted DAA with supporting UAV UE drift warning.SUMMARY

[0008] This summary is provided to introduce simplified concepts of the present disclosure. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0065] Some example embodiments will now be described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all embodiments are shown. Indeed, the example embodiments may take many different forms and should not be construed as fixed to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout.

[0066] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment” , “an embodiment” , “an example embodiment” , and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection  with an example embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0067] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0068] As used herein, the terms “data, ” “content, ” “information, ” and similar terms may be used interchangeably to refer to data capable of being transmitted, received and / or stored in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Thus, use of any such terms should not be taken to limit the spirit and scope of embodiments of the present invention.

[0069] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0070] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0071] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0072] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0073] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0074] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0075] This definition of “circuitry” applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term “circuitry” also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term “circuitry” also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0076] As defined herein, a “computer-readable storage medium, ” which refers to a non-transitory physical storage medium (e.g., volatile or non-volatile memory device) , can be differentiated from a “computer-readable transmission medium, ” which refers to an electromagnetic signal. Such a medium  may take many forms, including, but not limited to a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium (e.g., non-volatile media, volatile media) , and transmission media. Transmission media include, for example, coaxial cables, copper wire, fiber optic cables, and carrier waves that travel through space without wires or cables, such as acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves, including radio, optical and infrared waves. Signals include man-made transient variations in amplitude, frequency, phase, polarization or other physical properties transmitted through the transmission media. Examples of non-transitory computer-readable media include a magnetic computer readable medium (e.g., a floppy disk, hard disk, magnetic tape, any other magnetic medium) , an optical computer readable medium (e.g., a compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , a digital versatile disc (DVD) , a Blu-Ray disc, or the like) , a random access memory (RAM) , a programmable read only memory (PROM) , an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) , a FLASH-EPROM, or any other non-transitory medium from which a computer can read. The term computer-readable storage medium is used herein to refer to any computer-readable medium except transmission media. However, it will be appreciated that where embodiments are described to use a computer-readable storage medium, other types of computer-readable mediums may be substituted for or used in addition to the computer-readable storage medium in alternative embodiments.

[0077] In the following, the non-limiting term user equipment (UE) refers to any wireless device communicating with a network node and / or another UE in a cellular or mobile communication system. The UE may comprise any suitable device capable of at least perform cellular communication. For example, the UE may be a data processing device equipped with wireless receiver, data processing and user interface apparatus. Non-limiting examples of a UE comprise smart phones, mobile phones, cell phones, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, desktop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) , wireless cameras, gaming consoles or devices, music storage devices, playback appliances, wearable devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations tablets laptops, laptop embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop mounted equipment (LME) , smart devices, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE) , mobile-type communication (MTC) devices, Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, aerial UE, etc. The UE may be installed or located on an unmanned aerobat vehicle (UAV) , a drone or other kind of aerobat, such as a commercial aircraft, e.g., a helicopter and airplane. In this disclosure, such kind of UE is referred to as aerobat UE.

[0078] In the following, the non-limiting term radio access network node refers to any node that is a part of the radio access network (e.g., a base station) . The radio access network node can communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes in a cellular communications network, to enable and / or provide wireless access to the UE, and / or to perform other functions (e.g., administration) in the cellular communications network. Non-limiting examples of a network node comprise a base station (BS) , a NodeB, eNodeB (eNB) , gNodeB (gNB) , an access point, or the like.

[0079] It is noted that, a cellular communication system (such as a 3GPP system) would be configured to support the network-assisted DAA solution based on requirements for DAA. One of the key issues on the support of DAA in the cellular communication system is what network-assisted (ground based) DAA solutions may be applicable. It is proposed two options on network-assisted DAA for cellular communication system, e.g., as defined in 3GPP TR 23.700-58 V2.0.0:

[0080] ● Option A: network-assisted DAA with calculation functionality, where the cellular communication network calculates the relative position;

[0081] ● Option B: network-assisted DAA without calculation functionality, where the cellular communication network does not calculate the relative position and the USS does the calculation of the relative position.

[0082] Option A applies to the UAV UEs belonging to a same PLMN. For the UAV UEs belonging to the different PLMNs, a USS can get a UAV location of a UAV UE from a network of the UAV UE, and check the UAV location by itself. FIG. 1 illustrate an exemplary procedure for network-assisted DAA with calculation functionality for Option A. UAV is served by single USS for the duration of the connectivity between the USS and the UAV. As shown in FIG. 1, at step 1, a UAS Service Supplier (USS) , which acts as an Application Functionality (AF) or Location Services (LCS) client. sends a relative positioning request to a Gateway Mobile Location Centre (GMLC) , including UAV UE1 ID (e.g., a generic public subscription identifier (GPSI) of UE1) and UAV UE2 ID (e.g., UE2’s GPSI) , time slot for relative positioning and including a distance threshold. The GMLC determines a scheduled location, time, and frequency to get the location information of UAV UE1 and UAV UE2 at a same time within the given time slot.

[0083] At step 2, the GMLC obtains UAV UE1’s location using a GMLC based procedure (e.g., as described in clause 6.1.2 of 3GPP TS 23.273 V18.2.0) , where the scheduled location time determined in step 1 is used.

[0084] At step 3, the GMLC obtains UAV UE2’s location using a GMLC based procedure, (e.g., as described in clause 6.1.2 of 3GPP TS 23.273 V18.2.0) , where the scheduled location time determined in step 1 is used.

[0085] At step 4, the GMLC calculates a relative position result based on the UAV UE1’s location and UAV UE2’s location from step 2 and step 3.

[0086] At step 5, the GMLC checks the relative position result is lower than the distance threshold. The GMLC reports the relative position result to the USS within a given time slot.

[0087] After the USS gets the relative position result, the USS may send a DAA notification to UAV UEs (such as UE1, UE2, and / or other UAV UEs) or corresponding UAV controllers via application layer, so that the UAVs can change respective flight paths timely to avoid a collision.

[0088] FIG. 2 illustrate an exemplary procedure for network-assisted DAA without calculation functionality for Option B. Option B applies to the UAV UEs belonging to the same PLMN or different PLMNs. For the UAV UEs belonging to the different PLMNs, a USS can get UAV locations of the UAV UEs from the different PLMNs. As shown in FIG. 2, at step 1, a USS, which acts as AF / LCS client, obtains UAV UE1’s location using a GMLC based procedure, e.g., as described in clause 6.1.2 of 3GPP TS 23.273 V18.2.0, where a scheduled location time is used.

[0089] At step 2, the USS, which acts as AF / LCS client as AF / LCS client, obtains UAV UE2’s location using a GMLC based procedure, e.g., as described in clause 6.1.2 of 3GPP TS 23.273, where the same scheduled location time as that used in step 1 is used.

[0090] At step 3, the USS calculates a relative position result based on the UAV UE1’s location and UAV UE2’s location from step 1 and step 2. The USS may send a DAA notification to UAV UEs (such as UE1, UE2, and / or other UAV UEs) or the corresponding UAV controllers via application layer, so that the UAVs can change respective flight paths timely to avoid a collision.

[0091] The present disclosure targets network-assisted DAA enhancement with supporting UAV UE drift warning.

[0092] The role of Artificial Yaw Damping System (AYDS) is to maintain the stability of the aircraft on its vertical axis due to dutch rolls and turbulent airflow. AYDS or UAV navigation system (e.g., Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS) failure will cause a UAV UE can’t follow the planned flight path and height, regardless airflow bumps affect or not. The state in which a UAV UE can’t follow its planned flight path and height is referred to as “drift” .

[0093] The UAV UE location information is mandatory for DAA operation. In this regard, a UAV UE can be configured to report its flight data, which may comprise height, location, or speed, etc.., to a serving radio access network (RAN) , such as to gNB, and in turn to GMLC or USS. For example, the flight data may be reported by using measurement events H1 and H2, e.g., as specified in 3GPP TS 36.331 V17.5.0, as follows.

[0094] 5.5.4.16 Event H1 (The Aerial UE height is above a threshold)

[0095] The UE shall:

[0096] 1> consider the entering condition for this event to be satisfied when condition H1-1, as specified below, is fulfilled;

[0097] 1> consider the leaving condition for this event to be satisfied when condition H1-2, as specified below, is fulfilled;

[0098] Inequality H1-1 (Entering condition) Ms-Hys>Thresh+Offset

[0099] Inequality H1-2 (Leaving condition) Ms+Hys<Thresh+Offset

[0100] The variables in the formula are defined as follows:

[0101] Ms is the Aerial UE height, not taking into account any offsets.

[0102] Hys is the hysteresis parameter (i.e. h1-Hysteresis as defined within ReportConfigEUTRA) for this event.

[0103] Thresh is the reference threshold parameter for this event given in MeasConfig (i.e. heightThreshRef as defined within MeasConfig) .

[0104] Offset is the offset value to heightThreshRef to obtain the absolute threshold for this event. (i.e. h1-ThresholdOffset as defined within ReportConfigEUTRA)

[0105] Ms is expressed in meters.

[0106] Thresh is expressed in the same unit as Ms.

[0107] 5.5.4.17 Event H2 (The Aerial UE height is below a threshold)

[0108] The UE shall:

[0109] 1> consider the entering condition for this event to be satisfied when condition H2-1, as specified below, is fulfilled;

[0110] 1> consider the leaving condition for this event to be satisfied when condition H2-2, as specified below, is fulfilled;

[0111] Inequality H2-1 (Entering condition) Ms+Hys<Thresh+Offset

[0112] Inequality H2-2 (Leaving condition) Ms-Hys>Thresh+Offset

[0113] The variables in the formula are defined as follows:

[0114] Ms is the Aerial UE height, not taking into account any offsets.

[0115] Hys is the hysteresis parameter (i.e. h2-Hysteresis as defined within ReportConfigEUTRA) for this event.

[0116] Thresh is the reference threshold parameter for this event given in MeasConfig (i.e. heightThreshRef as defined within MeasConfig) .

[0117] Offset is the offset value to heightThreshRef to obtain the absolute threshold for this event. (i.e. h2-ThresholdOffset as defined within ReportConfigEUTRA)

[0118] Ms is expressed in meters.

[0119] Thresh is expressed in the same unit as Ms.

[0120] An aerobat UE may report measurement information in accordance with a measurement configuration of event H1 or H2. In this regard, a measurement report may be triggered when aerobat UE height becomes higher than a first threshold or lower than a second threshold. The measurement information to be reported may be configured according to an implementation of an aerobat UE. For example, from this measurement report, a RAN can obtain flight data of a UE, such as height (i.e., flight height, such as altitude) , location, speed, etc. and other information on uplink and downlink signals of the UE, such as Reference Signal Receiving Power (RSRP) or Reference Signal Receiving Quality (RSRQ) results.

[0121] The present disclosure proposes two observations for current UAV UE location reporting mechanism which is triggered with event H1 or H2 based on a flight height.

[0122] Observation 1: Usually a drifted UAV UE (such as Drifted UAV-1 shown in FIG. 3) would maintain its current height, which means event H1 or H2 will not be triggered for a long time, and then the UAV UE would not report location or other flight data until a network (e.g., RAN such as gNB, or core network such as GMLC or USS) triggers it to report. When the UAV UE has to request a new flight path data / information is up to UE implementation.

[0123] Observation 2: A further observation 2 is based on Observation 1, in case that a drifted UAV UE (such as Drifted UAV-2 as shown in FIG. 3) flies into a specific airspace without RAN service and direct UAV-to-UAV communication is impossible. For example, in this scenario, either Sidelink is not supported by one UAV UE (such as Drifted UAV-2 as shown in FIG. 3) , or one UAV UE (such as Drifted UAV-2 as shown in FIG. 3) locates out of a proximity service (ProSe) discovery area. That means a UAV UE (such as Drifted UAV-2 as shown in FIG. 3) will completely lost network connection. The UAV UE could neither report its location information to a network nor response for subsequent DAA operation from the network, e.g., provide any new information related to flight data or path information.

[0124] It can be seen from such observations that, a drift may cause a failure of network-assisted DAA. FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary scenario of UAV collision due to a failure DAA. Without correct location information or other flight data reported from a drifted UAV UE (such as UAV-1 and UAV-2 shown in FIG. 3) in real time, a relative position can’t be calculated by GMLC (by using Option A) or USS (by using Option B) , e.g., as specified in 3GPP TR 23.700 V2.0.0. Then, the USS can’t send a DAA notification to one or more related UAV UEs or corresponding UAV controllers via application layer, causing that the related UAV (s) can’t change respective flight paths timely to avoid a collision. The drift causing such DAA failure may be referred to as “drift error” .

[0125] As shown in FIG. 3, because the drifted UAV-1 and UAV-2 do not report their location information or other flight data to a gNB, the GMLC or USS (not shown) can’t calculate a relative position between UAV-1 and UAV-2, and a relative position between normal UAV and UAV-1, and a relative position between normal UAV and UAV-2. Then, a collision of these UAVs may occur if the normal UAV, UAV-1 and UAV-2 keep their flight paths unchanged.

[0126] “Drift error” (caused by various reasons, such as AYDS or UAV navigation system failure) is actually a position error. The present disclosure essentially tries to compensate this type of error, making location report of UAV UEs to be more accurate. In addition, implementation of drift warning on such detected position errors would be possible based on the present disclosure.

[0127] The present disclosure introduces a method for enabling 3GPP RAN detect that a UAV UE might lost network connection and sending corresponding event to GMLCor UTM, to enhance network-assisted DAA operation with supported UAV UE drift warning. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, upon receiving a measurement report of a UAV UE triggered by event H1 or H2, RAN (such as a gNB serving the UAV UE) triggers a periodical radio measurement reporting from the UAV UE, e.g., by transmitting a triggering indication to the UAV UE. For example, the RAN may signal the UAV UE a time period (also referred to as a radio measurements report time) of the periodical radio measurement reporting, to indicate the UAV UE when to report a radio measurement result. The radio measurements report time may be per-configured to correspond to a speed range of UAV UE. For example, the radio measurements report time would be pre-configured as one second when the speed of the UAV UE is within 30km / h~40km / h. This signaling would instruct the UAV UE to transmit its radio measurement report to the RAN periodically.

[0128] It should be appreciated that UAV UE is just taken as an example of aerobat UE. Embodiments of this disclosure may be applied to any kind of aerobat UE. It should also be appreciated that the measurement report triggered by event H1 or H2 is just taken as an example. The RAN may trigger a periodical radio measurement reporting from a UAV UE, in response to receiving any other measurement report concerning flight data of a UAV UE, such as a height, a speed, and / or location  information of the UAV UE, or other flight data. The measurement report concerning flight data of the UAV UE may be triggered by any other events related to a change of flight data of the UAV UE. For example, the events may be that a speed of the UAV UE becomes higher or lower than a threshold.

[0129] After signaling the UAV UE to perform a periodical radio measurement reporting, the RAN would wait for receiving a periodical radio measurement report from the UAV UE. In this regard, a gNB may check if a radio measurement report is received from the UAV UE. If no radio measurement is reported from the UAV UE during a pre-configured threshold of time period (denoted as Max Wait Time) , RAN will consider that the UAV UE might drift and fly in an airspace without RAN service. The pre-configured threshold of time period (also referred to as waiting period) for waiting for a receipt of a periodical radio measurement report from the UAV UE may be set or configured based on the radio measurements report time. For example, in case that the radio measurements report time is 1 second in an example, the Max Wait Time may be 3*3s, i.e., three times of the radio measurements report time. Then, the RAN will report a UAV UE lost event to GMLC and UTM, to trigger the UTM to plan and inform a new flight height to other UAV UEs which are flying in or to be fly into a potential collision airspace where a collision with the drifting UAV UE may occur, e.g., UAV UEs flying at a same height as the drifted UAV UE. In this regard, the GMLC and UTM may transmit a UAV drift collision warning to the other UAV UEs.

[0130] In some embodiments, a UTM or other core network node may transmit to a RAN node (such as gNB) , pre-configuration information indicating at least one of Max Wait Time or radio measurements report time corresponding to one or more flight parameters of the UAV UE. For example, the UTM may configure a gNB and a UAV UE a pre-configured table, which includes expected radio measurements report time with corresponding speed ranges and Max Wait Time, e.g., when a measurement reported triggered by event H1 or H2 is received. For example, the pre-configured table may show mappings between a speed range of the UAV UE and radio measurements report time (and further Max Wait Time) as follows in Table 1:

[0131] Table 1

[0132] It should be appreciated that the pre-configured table is just an exemplary form for indicating respective radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time corresponding to various speed ranges of a UAV UE. The mappings between a speed range of the UAV UE and radio measurements report  time (and further Max Wait Time) may be pre-configured and indicated in any other suitable manner. In some embodiments, the radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time may be pre-configured to correspond to any other flight parameters, such as a height and / or location information of a UAV UE.

[0133] In some embodiments, upon receiving measurement report triggered by event H1 or H2, the RAN would determine radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time based on a speed of the UAV UE, and / or other flight parameters (such as a height and / or location information, etc. ) of the UAV UE. In an example, the RAN may receive UAV UE speed and / or other flight parameters of the UAV UE from the measurement report, for a subsequent lookup for a UAV radio measurement report time via the pre-configured table (e.g., Table 1) . In another example, the RAN may determine UAV UE speed and / or other flight parameters of the UAV UE from uplink signal and / or downlink signal of UAV UE. Then, the RAN may lookup the pre-configured table (e.g., Table 1) for radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time.

[0134] If the speed of the UAV UE could match a radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time, and a radio measurements report time could be found in the table. Then, the RAN may signal the UAV UE (e.g., via radio resource control (RRC) message, or media access control (MAC) control element (CE) ) a radio measurements report time corresponding to the speed of the UAV UE. For example, according to Table 1, when the speed of the UAV UE is 35km / h, a radio message report time would be 0.3s, and Max Wait Time would be 0.9s (=0.3*3) .

[0135] Otherwise, if the speed of the UAV UE does not match to any radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time e.g., according to Table 1, The RAN may directly report the UAV speed and / or other flight parameters (such as a height and / or location information, etc. ) to GMLC / UTM, for relative position calculation. In an example, the UTM may re-configure Table 1 to include a radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time corresponding to the reported UAV speed and / or other flight parameters. Then the re-configured table may be transmitted to the RAN, so that the RAN may find a radio measurements report time and Max Wait Time corresponding to the UAV speed and / or other flight parameters. In another example, the GMLC / UTM may determine that the UAV UE is in an unnormal flight attitude according to reported UAV speed and / or other flight parameters of the UAV UE, and control the UAV to adjust its speed and / or other flight parameters.

[0136] In some embodiments, upon transmitting a signal or indication to trigger the UAV UE to perform a periodical radio measurement reporting, the RAN may start a timer to count a receiving time of the periodical radio measurement report, and wait for receiving the periodical radio measurement report. In this regard, an expiration time of the timer would be configured as the Max Wait Time. Upon receiving a radio measurement report from UAV UE before an expiration of the timer, the RAN may  restart the timer to count the receiving time of a subsequent radio measurement report, and wait for receiving the subsequent periodical radio measurement report.

[0137] In some embodiments, if the periodical radio measurement is reported within the Max Wait Time, the RAN may report flight data (such as height, speed, location information of the UAV UE) contained in the periodical radio measurement to the GMLC / UTM.

[0138] If the periodical radio measurement report or the subsequent periodical radio measurement report isn’t reported till an expiration of the timer (i.e., after Max Wait Time) , the RAN would consider that the UAV UE might drift and fly in an airspace without RAN service. Then, the RAN reports a UAV UE lost event to access and mobility management function (AMF) , and in turn to GMLC (e.g., for DAA solution of Option A) or UTM (e.g., for DAA solution of Option B) . In response to receiving the reported UAV UE lost event, the GMLC / UTM may be triggered to warn a UAV drift collision to other UAV UEs which are flying or to be fly in a potential collision airspace where a collision with the drifting UAV UE may occur, e.g., an airspace surrounding the drifted UAV UE. In this regard, the GMLC / UTM may determine the airspace surrounding the drifted UAV UE based on latest flight data of the drifted UAV UE, such as those reported in former periodical radio measurement reports. In some embodiments, the GMLC / UTM may plan and inform new flight paths to other UAV UEs flying in an airspace surrounding the drifted UAV UE, so as to avoid collision of the drifted UAV UE with the other UAV UEs.

[0139] In some embodiments, a UTM or other core network nodes may configure the RAN (such as gNB) and a UAV UE with a same table indicating respective UAV radio measurement report time corresponding to various speed ranges, and corresponding Max Wait Time. This pre-configuration may be performed at application level, by transmitting an application message to the RAN and the UAV UE, respectively. Alternatively, this pre-configuration table or information may be transmitted to the RAN via next generation (NG) signaling. This pre-configuration table or information may be transmitted to the UAV UE via a RRC message or MAC CE. In these embodiments, the UAV UE can determine the UAV radio measurement report time according to its flight speed, without RAN’s assistance.

[0140] Embodiments of the present disclosure may enable a UAV UE to periodically report radio measurement results, e.g., timing advance (TA) , pathloss and Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) , and flight data of the UAV UE such as height, speed, or location information. The network (such as RAN, GMLC or UTM) may know up-to-date status of the UAV UE, when H1 / H2 event isn’t working, and thus solving the problem described above as Observation 1.

[0141] Embodiments of the present disclosure may also enable the RAN (such as gNB) to detect potential UAV UE drift and inform GMLC / UTM to warn other UAV UEs or UAVs in a specific airspace, e.g., a potential collision airspace where a collision with the drifting UAV UE may occur. By replanning flight paths, other UAV UEs or UAVs may bypass a potential collision airspace, and thus the problem described above as Observation 2 can be solved.

[0142] Solutions of the present disclosure may be applicable to an aerobat UE (such as a UAV UE) , a radio access network node (such as gNB or other network node in RAN) , related network nodes in a core network, such as a network node for detect and avoid operation (such as GMLC or UTM) , an access and mobility management function (AMF) node and a location management function (LMF) node, and related procedures and system. The GMLC contains functionality required to support location service. A GMLC is the first node an external location service client accesses in a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) . The AMF contains functionality responsible for managing positioning for a target UE for all types of location request. The AMF is accessible to the GMLC via the Namf interface, to the RAN via the N2 reference point and to the UE via the N1 reference point. The LMF manages the overall co-ordination and scheduling of resources required for the location of a UE that is registered with or accessing the fifth generation (5G) core network.

[0143] Hereinafter, the solutions of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 4-11.

[0144] FIG. 4 is a flow chart depicting a procedure for the aerobat UE Drift. At block 410, a network node for detect and avoid operation (such as UTM) pre-configures a table for radio measurement report time with corresponding speed ranges, and Max Wait Time for a periodical radio measurement report. In an example, the UTM may pre-configure the table in a RAN node (such as a gNB) . In another example, the UTM may transmit the table in both a RAN node (such as a gNB) and an aerobat UE (such as UAV UE) .

[0145] At block 420, a RAN node may receive a measurement report triggered by a H1 or H2 Event from an aerobat UE. The measurement report comprises a speed of the aerobat UE. The measurement report may comprise other flight data of the aerobat UE, such as height, location information, etc.

[0146] At block 430, the RAN node lookups the pre-configured table for a radio measure report time corresponding to the aerobat UE’s speed. If the lookup for the radio measure report time is not success, i.e., no radio measure report time corresponds to the aerobat UE’s speed, then the RAN node may report the flight data of the aerobat UE comprised in the measurement report to the UTM, as shown at block 490.

[0147] At block 440, the RAN node signals the aerobat UE a radio measurement report time, so as to trigger aerobat UE to report radio measurement results periodically.

[0148] Then, at block 450, the RAN node waits for receiving a periodical radio measurement report from the aerobat UE, for a time period of Max Wait Time. The radio measurement report may comprise up-to-date flight data of the aerobat UE, such as a height, speed, location information, etc.

[0149] At block 460, the RAN node check if a periodical radio measurement report is received before an expiration of the time period of Max Wait Time. In case that a periodical radio measurement report is received before an expiration of the time period of Max Wait Time, the RAN node may transmit the reported flight data of the aerobat UE to the UTM, as shown by arrow from block 460 to 490. Meanwhile, the RAN node may wait for receiving a subsequent periodical radio measurement report from the aerobat UE for a subsequent time period of Max Wait Time, as shown by arrow from block 460 to 450.

[0150] At block 470, in case that no periodical radio measurement report is received before an expiration of the time period of Max Wait Time, the RAN node reports an aerobat UE lost event to AMF, and in turn to UTM.

[0151] Then at block 480, a UTM may send a drift collision warning and new flight path, e.g., to aerobat UEs flying in or to be fly into a potential collision airspace where a collision with the drifting aerobat UE may occur.

[0152] FIG. 5 is an exemplary signaling flow depicting an exemplary procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In this signaling flow, the GMLC / UTM 505 may be GMLC in DAA solution of Option A, and be UTM in DAA solution of Option B.

[0153] As shown in FIG. 5, at step 1a, GMLC or UTM 505 informs AMF 504 a pre-configured table for UAV UE radio measurement report time. Then, the AMF 504 forwards the configuration to RAN 503 (such as gNB) in step 1b. The table comprises radio measurement report time with corresponding speed ranges for a periodical radio measure measurement report. In some embodiments, the table may further comprise corresponding Max Wait Time.

[0154] At step 2, when airflow bumps or GNSS glitch affect appears, an aerobat UE 502 (e.g., UAV UE) may report H1 / H2 event and its location and speed to the RAN 503 (e.g., its serving gNB) , e.g., according to current specification and / or standard implementation.

[0155] In response, the RAN 503 uses the received speed to lookup a radio measurement report time in the pre-configured table (configured in steps 1and 1b) for the UAV UE 502, as shown at step 3.

[0156] At step 4, the RAN 503 signals the UAV UE 502 a radio measurement report time retrieved at step 3, to trigger a periodical radio measurement reporting.

[0157] Then, at step 5, the UAV UE 502 periodically report radio measurement results to the RAN 503, based on the radio measurement report time received at step 4.

[0158] Upon receiving a periodical radio measurement report, the RAN 503 may inform flight data of the aerobat UE 502 (such as a height, speed, location information, etc. ) received in the periodical radio measurement report, to AMF in Step 6a. The AMF 504 may forward the flight data (such as a height, speed, location information, etc. ) to the GMLC / UTM 505 at step 6b. The GMLC / UTM 505 can calculate relative position related to the UAV UE 502 based on these flight data.

[0159] It is noted, the GMLC / UTM 505 may already receive location information of the UAV UE 502 via application layer signaling. The additional and optional information of the reported flight data coming from the RAN 503 can be used for verification purposes.

[0160] In some embodiments, the AMF 504 may further forward the reported flight data (such as a height, speed, location information, etc. ) to LMF 506, as shown at step 6c. The LMF 506 may store these flight data of the UAV UE 502. In some scenarios, the GMLC / UTM 505 can retrieve flight data of the UAV UE 502 from the LMF 506, e.g., in case that the GMLC / UTM 505 does not receive the flight data successfully from the AMF 504 at step 6b. In this regard, the GMLC / UTM 505 may send a request to the LMF 506 for flight data of the UAV UE 502 as shown at step 6d, and then receive the flight data of the UAV UE 502 from the LMF 506 as shown at step 6e.

[0161] In a scenario, the UAV UE 502 may drift, e.g., due to an AYDS failure. The AYDS failure may be caused by turbulent airflow in step 2. The drifted UAV UE 502 may fly in an airspace without RAN service. Then, no radio measurement is received by the RAN 503 and the pre-configured period of Max Wait Time is expired, as shown at step 7.

[0162] In this scenario, the RAN 503 sends an event indication indicating that the UAV UE 502 lost to the AMF 504 at step 8a. The event indication may include an identifier (ID) of the UAV UE 502, e.g., Generic Public Subscription Identifier (GPSI) . The AMF 504 forwards this event indication to the GMLC / UTM 505 at step 8b.

[0163] Then, at step 9, the GMLC / UTM 505 may identify a potential collision airspace where a collision with the drifting UAV UE 502 may occur, by using latest flight data (such as at least one of location, speed, height, etc. ) reported by the lost UAV UE 502, and transmit a drift collision warning to other aerobat UEs (such as one or more normal UAV UEs 501) flying surround the identified potential collision airspace, e.g., at the same height surrounding the identified airspace. In this regard, the GMLC / UTM 505 may provide replanned flight paths for these normal UAV UEs.

[0164] FIG. 6 is a flow chart 600 depicting a method performed at a RAN node (such as a gNB or other base station) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 610, the RAN node receives from an aerobat UE, a measurement report concerning a first set of flight data of the aerobat UE. The measurement report may be a measurement report for measurement event H1 or H2.

[0165] At block 620, the RAN node transmits, to the aerobat UE, an indication for triggering a periodical radio measurement reporting from the aerobat UE. In an embodiment, the indication may comprise a period of the periodical radio measurement reporting.

[0166] Then, at block 630, in response to a transmission of the indication, the RAN node waits for receiving a radio measurement report from the aerobat UE. The radio measurement report comprises a second set of flight data of the aerobat UE.

[0167] The flight data may comprise at least one of the following flight parameters: a height of the aerobat UE; a speed of the aerobat UE; or location information of the aerobat UE. The second set of flight data may comprise information on different flight parameters from that in the first set of flight data. For example, the aerobat UE may drift due to an AYDS failure, so that some flight parameters cannot be detected. Then the second set of flight data may contain only information on a part of flight parameters.

[0168] In some embodiments, in case that no radio measurement report is received from the aerobat UE within a pre-configured waiting period, the RAN node may transmit an event indication indicating that the aerobat UE lost network connection, to a first network node for detect and avoid operation, as shown at block 640.

[0169] In some embodiments, in case that the radio measurement report is received from the aerobat UE within a pre-configured waiting period, the RAN node may transmit the received radio measurement report to a first network node for detect and avoid operation, as shown at block 650; and return to block 630 to wait for receiving a subsequent radio measurement report from the aerobat UE.

[0170] In an embodiment, upon a transmission of the indication, the RAN node may start a timer for counting a pre-configured waiting period for waiting for receiving the radio measurement report. The timer may be restarted upon receiving a radio measurement report, for counting a pre-configured waiting period for waiting for receiving the subsequent radio measurement report.

[0171] Although not shown in FIG. 6, in an embodiment, the RAN node may further determine at least one of the pre-configured waiting period or a period of the periodical radio measurement reporting, based on one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE. The RAN node may receive information on the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE from the measurement report concerning the set of flight data of the aerobat UE. Alternatively, or additionally, the RAN node may  determine the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE by measuring uplink signals from the aerobat UE.

[0172] Although not shown in FIG. 6, in an embodiment, the RAN node may receive pre-configuration information, which indicates at least one of a waiting period or a period of the periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE. The pre-configuration information may be received via next generation (NG) signaling or an application message. The RAN node may retrieve the at least one of the waiting period or the period of the periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE, according to the pre-configuration information. In an embodiment, the RAN node may transmit the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE to a first network node for detect and avoid operation, in case that no waiting period and no period of the periodical radio measurement reporting corresponds to the speed of the aerobat UE.

[0173] FIG. 7 is a flow chart 700 depicting an exemplary method performed at an aerobat UE, such as an UAV UE, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 710, the aerobat UE transmit to a RAN node (such as a gNB) , a measurement report concerning a first set of flight data of the aerobat UE. The measurement report may be a measurement report for measurement event H1 or H2.

[0174] At block 720, the aerobat UE receives from the RAN node, an indication for triggering a periodical radio measurement reporting from the aerobat UE.

[0175] At block 730, in response to the indication, the aerobat UE transmits a radio measurement report to the radio access network node periodically. The radio measurement report comprises a second set of flight data of the aerobat UE. The flight data may comprise at least one of the following flight parameters: a height of the aerobat UE; a speed of the aerobat UE; or location information of the aerobat UE.

[0176] In an embodiment, the aerobat UE may transmit in the measurement report, information on one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE for determining a period of the periodical radio measurement reporting.

[0177] In an embodiment, the aerobat UE may receive the period of the periodical radio measurement reporting in the indication for triggering the periodical radio measurement reporting.

[0178] In an embodiment, the aerobat UE may determine the period of the periodical radio measurement reporting based on one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE. The aerobat UE may receive pre-configuration information, which indicates a period of the periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE; and retrieve the period  of the periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to the one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE, according to the pre-configuration information. The pre-configuration information may be received via a RRC message, or a MAC CE, or an application message.

[0179] FIG. 8 is a flow chart 800 depicting an exemplary method performed at a first network node for detect and avoid operation, such as gateway mobile location centre (e.g., GMLC) or a traffic management functionality of unmanned aircraft system (e.g., UTM) , according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 810, the first network node receives, from a radio access network node (such as a gNB) , an event indication indicating that the aerobat UE lost network connection. At block 820, the first network node transmits a notification of drift collision warning to other aerobat UEs in a potential collision airspace, such as an airspace surrounding the aerobat UE.

[0180] Although not shown in FIG. 8, in an embodiment, the first network node may transmit to the radio access network node, pre-configuration information which indicates at least one of a waiting period or a period of a periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE. The pre-configuration information may be transmitted via next generation (NG) signaling or an application message.

[0181] Although not shown in FIG. 8, in an embodiment, the first network node may transmit to the aerobat UE, pre-configuration information which indicates a period of a periodical radio measurement reporting corresponding to one or more flight parameters of the aerobat UE. The pre-configuration information may be transmitted via a radio resource control (RRC) message, or a media access control (MAC) control element, or an application message.

[0182] In some embodiments, the first network node may request flight data of the aerobat UE from a third network node, such as a network node for location management function (e.g., LMF) ; and receive a set of flight data of the aerobat UE from the third network node. The set of flight data comprises at least one of a height of the aerobat UE, a speed of the aerobat UE, or location information of the aerobat UE. The set of flight data of the aerobat UE may be used for identifying the potential collision airspace.

[0183] FIG. 9 is a flow chart 900 depicting an exemplary method performed at a second network node, such as a network node for access and mobility management function (e.g., AMF) , according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 910, the second network node receives from a radio access network node (such as a gNB) , a set of flight data of an aerobat UE. At block 920, the second network node transmits the set of flight data of the aerobat UE to a third network node, such as a network node for location management function (e.g., LMF) , for a storage of the set of flight data. The set of flight data comprises at least one of a height of the aerobat UE, a speed of the aerobat UE, or location information of the aerobat UE, so that up-to-date flight data of the aerobat UE may be stored  and maintained in the third network node. The set of flight data comprises at least one of a height of the aerobat UE, a speed of the aerobat UE, or location information of the aerobat UE.

[0184] FIG. 10 is a flow chart 1000 depicting an exemplary method performed at a third network node, such as a network node for location management function node (e.g., LMF) , according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 1010, the third network node receives, from a second network, such as a network node for access and mobility management (e.g., AMF) , a set of flight data of an aerobat UE. At block 1020, the third network node stores the set of flight data of the aerobat UE. The set of flight data comprises at least one of a height of the aerobat UE, a speed of the aerobat UE, or location information of the aerobat UE. As such, up-to-date flight data of the aerobat UE may be stored and maintained in the location management function node.

[0185] Although not shown in FIG. 10, in an embodiment, the third network node may receive a request for flight data of the aerobat UE from a first network node for detect and avoid operation (such as GMLC or UTM) ; and transmit a set of flight data of the aerobat UE to the network node for detect and avoid operation. The set of flight data may comprise at least one of a height of the aerobat UE, a speed of the aerobat UE, or location information of the aerobat UE.

[0186] Now reference is made to FIG. 11 illustrating a simplified block diagram of an apparatus 1100 that may be embodied in / as an aerobat UE, or a network node (such as RAN node, GMLC, UTM, AMF, LMF) . The apparatus 1100 may comprise at least one processor 1101, such as a data processor (DP) and at least one memory 1102 coupled to the at least one processor 1101. The apparatus 1100 may further comprise one or more transmitters TX, one or more receivers RX 1103, or one or more transceivers coupled to the one or more processors 1101 to communicate wirelessly and / or through wireline. For example, the transmitters TX / RX 1103 may comprise a radio transceiver for transmitting and receiving cellular communication signals, and a GNSS receiver for receiving satellite position signals.

[0188] The processors 1101 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment, and may include one or more of the following: general purpose computers, special purpose computers, microprocessors, digital signal processors (DSPs) and processors based on multicore processor architecture, as non-limiting examples.

[0189] The memory 1102 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment and may be implemented using any suitable data storage technology, such as semiconductor-based memory devices, magnetic memory devices and systems, optical memory devices and systems, fixed memory and removable memory, as non-limiting examples.

[0190] The memory 1102 stores a program 1104. The program 1104 may include instructions that, when executed on the associated processor 1101, enable the apparatus 1100 to operate in accordance with the embodiments of the present disclosure. A combination of the at least one processor 1101 and the at least one memory 1102 may form processing circuitry or means 1105 adapted to implement various embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0191] Various embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented by computer program executable by one or more of the processors 1101, software, firmware, hardware or in a combination thereof.

[0192] In general, the various exemplary embodiments may be implemented in hardware or special purpose circuits, software, logic, module, means or any combination thereof. For example, some aspects may be implemented in hardware, while other aspects may be implemented in firmware or software which may be executed by a controller, microprocessor or other computing device, although the invention is not limited thereto. While various aspects of the exemplary embodiments of this disclosure may be illustrated and described as block diagrams, flow charts, or using some other pictorial representation, it is well understood that these blocks, apparatus, systems, techniques or methods described herein may be implemented in, as non-limiting examples, means, module, hardware, software, firmware, special purpose circuits or logic, general purpose hardware or controller or other computing devices, or some combination thereof.

[0193] As such, it should be appreciated that at least some aspects of the exemplary embodiments of the disclosures may be practiced in various components such as integrated circuit chips and modules. It should thus be appreciated that the exemplary embodiments of this disclosure may be realized in an apparatus that is embodied as an integrated circuit, where the integrated circuit may comprise circuitry (as well as possibly firmware) for embodying at least one or more of a data processor, a digital signal processor, baseband circuitry and radio frequency circuitry that are configurable so as to operate in accordance with the exemplary embodiments of this disclosure.

[0194] It should be appreciated that at least some aspects of the exemplary embodiments of the disclosures may be embodied in computer-executable instructions, such as in one or more program modules, executed by one or more computers or other devices. Generally, program modules include routines, programs, objects, components, data structures, etc. that perform particular tasks or  implement particular abstract data types when executed by a processor in a computer or other device. The computer executable instructions may be stored on a computer readable medium, for example, non-transitory computer readable medium, such as a hard disk, optical disk, removable storage media, solid state memory, RAM, etc. As will be appreciated by one of skills in the art, the function of the program modules may be combined or distributed as desired in various embodiments. In addition, the function may be embodied in whole or in part in firmware or hardware equivalents such as integrated circuits, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) , and the like.
