[0001] Cross-references
[0002] This application claims priority to the Chinese patent application filed with the China Patent Office on September 15, 2023, with application number 2023111932314 and invention name “Communication Perception Method and Communication Device”. The entire contents of the application are incorporated by reference into this application. Technical Field
[0003] The present application relates to the field of communication technology, and in particular to a communication perception method and communication equipment. Background Art
[0004] In the future, applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), immersive services, and digital twins will place increasingly stringent demands on mobile communications. These complex application scenarios will require a high degree of convergence between communication and perception. Furthermore, as communication frequency bands shift toward higher frequencies, they increasingly overlap with traditional radar perception bands. Implementing both communication and perception functions within the same spectrum and using the same hardware can reduce equipment costs and size.
[0005] To achieve communication perception, related technologies typically use radar and communication systems that share traditional communication links, including all hardware modules except the antenna. This approach involves separating the transmit and receive antennas or employing high-isolation measures such as adding partitions to achieve transmit and receive isolation. This presents the following problems: First, antennas cannot share a single antenna for both transmission and reception. If the overall antenna volume remains unchanged, the corresponding transmit or receive antenna gain will be halved, and the number of beamforming channels will also be reduced, impacting communication performance. Second, if the transmit antenna remains the same size as the previous communication antenna, the overall antenna volume will double, directly increasing the size and cost of the entire integrated communication perception base station.

[0021] In order to enable those skilled in the art to better understand the technical solutions in this application, the technical solutions in the embodiments of this application will be clearly and completely described below in conjunction with the drawings in the embodiments of this application. Obviously, the described embodiments are only part of the embodiments of this application, not all of the embodiments. Based on the embodiments in this application, all other embodiments obtained by ordinary technicians in this field without making creative efforts should fall within the scope of protection of this application.
[0022] The communication perception method provided in the embodiments of the present application can be applied in a single base station architecture with integrated communication perception. Communication and (radar) perception work in a time-sharing manner. By introducing flexible antenna grouping technology, additional perception functions can be added while keeping the hardware of the communication equipment unchanged. Antenna grouping technology supports all antenna channels of a communication time domain unit (such as a communication time slot or symbol) to participate in communication beamforming; in a radar perception time domain unit (such as a perception time slot or symbol), some antennas transmit perception signals and some antennas receive perception signals, thus solving the problem that the communication perception scheme in related technologies affects communication performance or increases antenna size and cost.
[0023] In the communication perception method provided in the embodiment of the present application, a flexible antenna grouping technology is adopted, which can adaptively complete the selection of transmitting and receiving antenna groups according to the requirements of the perception scenario. For scenarios with low perception performance requirements, fewer antenna channels can be selected to achieve the demand of reducing power consumption; for scenarios with high perception performance requirements, antenna groups with a higher number of antenna channels are adaptively selected to give priority to ensuring perception performance. The following will be explained in detail in conjunction with specific embodiments.
[0024] FIG1 shows a flow chart of a communication perception method provided by an embodiment of the present application, which can be executed by a communication device, in other words, the method can be executed by software or hardware installed in the communication device. As shown in FIG1 , the method can include the following steps.
[0025] S102: Acquire perception signaling.
[0026] The perception signaling may be used to indicate perception sequence data, which may be used to send or receive a perception signal. The perception signaling may also carry information other than the perception sequence data, for example, a perception performance requirement, which is used to assist in determining the first antenna group and the second antenna group.
[0027] S104: Determine a first group of antennas and a second group of antennas in an antenna array based on the perception signaling; wherein, in a perception time domain unit, the first group of antennas is used to send perception signals, and the second group of antennas is used to receive reflected perception signals; and in a communication time domain unit, all antennas in the antenna array are used for communication beamforming.
[0028] It will be appreciated that an antenna array typically includes multiple antenna units (hereinafter referred to as antennas). The first antenna group determined in this step may include multiple antennas; the second antenna group may also include multiple antennas. The isolation between the antennas in the first antenna group and the antennas in the second antenna group may meet a predefined isolation index value, for example, be greater than or equal to the predefined isolation index value, thereby minimizing self-interference in the transmission and reception of sensing signals in the sensing time domain unit.
[0029] Generally, one antenna corresponds to one antenna channel. Therefore, the determination of the first group of antennas and the second group of antennas in the antenna array described in this embodiment can also be described as determining the first group of antenna channels and the second group of antenna channels.
[0030] The perception time domain unit mentioned in this embodiment may be a time domain unit for sending and receiving perception signals, and the time domain unit may be a time slot or a symbol, etc. The communication time domain unit mentioned in this embodiment may be a time domain unit for implementing uplink and downlink communications, and the time domain unit may also be a time slot or a symbol, etc.
[0031] In one embodiment, S104 may further include the following steps: in the perception time domain unit, controlling the first group of antennas to send perception signals, and controlling the second group of antennas to receive the reflected perception signals, thereby realizing the perception function; in the communication time domain unit, controlling all antennas in the antenna array to perform communication beamforming, thereby realizing high-gain communication performance.
[0032] The communication sensing method provided in the embodiments of the present application can determine the first and second groups of antennas in the antenna array based on sensing signaling. The first group of antennas is used to transmit sensing signals in the sensing time domain unit, and the second group of antennas is used to receive reflected sensing signals in the sensing time domain unit. In the communication time domain unit, all antennas in the antenna array are used for communication beamforming. Due to the use of antenna grouping technology, compared with solutions that separate the transmitting and receiving antennas or use partitions, communication performance can be improved without increasing antenna size and cost.
[0033] The communication sensing method provided in the embodiment of the present application does not require the addition of sensing hardware circuits, and can add base station sensing functions on the basis of the existing communication simulation hardware remaining unchanged; in addition, there is no need to add additional self-interference elimination design, and radar transmission and reception self-interference elimination can be achieved only through antenna grouping transmission and reception channel selection; in addition, it does not affect the multi-channel antenna beamforming function of the communication time domain unit, and has no effect on the operation of the communication time domain unit.
[0034] In one embodiment, the perception signaling obtained in S102 can also be used to indicate perception performance requirements. Determining the first group of antennas and the second group of antennas in the antenna array based on the perception signaling in S10 includes: determining a target antenna profile from multiple sets of antenna profiles based on the perception performance requirements; determining the first group of antennas and the second group of antennas in the antenna array based on the target antenna profile; wherein, among the multiple sets of antenna profiles, at least two sets of antenna profiles correspond to different perception performance requirements.
[0035] In this embodiment, the perception performance requirements can be reflected by at least one of the following: angle measurement accuracy, distance measurement accuracy, speed measurement accuracy, coverage distance, constant false alarm rate, etc., wherein different perception performance requirements can correspond to different application scenarios, and the different perception performance requirements mentioned here can refer to different levels (or sizes) of perception performance requirements.
[0036] For example, in drone intrusion monitoring scenarios, since it is only necessary to monitor whether there are drones in the designated area, the required perception performance requirements are not high, such as the ranging accuracy and speed measurement accuracy being lower than a certain threshold; while for lane and traffic flow monitoring scenarios, since it is necessary to accurately locate vehicles in different lanes, the accuracy and resolution performance requirements are very high, so the required perception performance requirements are higher, such as the ranging accuracy and speed measurement accuracy need to be higher than a certain threshold.
[0037] For example, the perception performance requirements are divided into three levels: high, medium and low. These three levels correspond to the first perception scenario, the second perception scenario and the third perception scenario, respectively. Among them, the perception performance requirement of the first perception scenario is the highest, and accordingly the required number of transmitting antennas (i.e., the number of antennas in the first group of antennas) and the number of receiving antennas (i.e., the number of antennas in the second group of antennas) are the highest, which is conducive to ensuring high-performance perception; the perception performance requirement of the third perception scenario is the lowest, and accordingly the required number of transmitting antennas and receiving antennas are the lowest, which is conducive to reducing power consumption; the perception performance requirement of the second perception scenario is average, and accordingly the required number of transmitting antennas and receiving antennas are between the above two, which is convenient for maintaining a balance between low power consumption and high perception performance.
[0038] This embodiment can flexibly select antenna groupings, and different antenna groupings can be configured for different perception performance scenarios. The adaptive antenna grouping selection helps to reduce power consumption and can flexibly switch between low-power consumption scenarios and high-perception performance scenarios.
[0039] In one embodiment, under different perceived performance requirements: the number of antennas in the first antenna group in the multiple sets of antenna configuration files is different, and the number of antennas in the second antenna group in the multiple sets of antenna configuration files is different.
[0040] In one embodiment, the required sensing performance is positively correlated with the number of antennas in the first antenna group. Specifically, a higher the required sensing performance, the more antennas in the first antenna group, which improves sensing performance. Conversely, a lower the required sensing performance, the fewer antennas in the first antenna group, which reduces power consumption. Similarly, the required sensing performance is positively correlated with the number of antennas in the second antenna group. Specifically, a higher the required sensing performance, the more antennas in the second antenna group, which improves sensing performance. Conversely, a lower the required sensing performance, the fewer antennas in the second antenna group, which reduces power consumption.
[0041] The method provided in any of the above embodiments may further include the following step: generating the multiple sets of antenna configuration files based on at least one of the following:
[0042] 1) Isolation between different antennas in the antenna array.
[0043] 2) The following contents are respectively required by the plurality of different perception performance requirements: the number of antennas in the first antenna group and the number of antennas in the second antenna group.
[0044] Based on any of the above embodiments, the perception signaling can also be used to indicate perception sequence data, and the method also includes: in the perception time domain unit, based on the perception sequence data, using the first group of antennas to send the perception signal, and using the second group of antennas to receive the reflected perception signal.
[0045] Corresponding to the above-mentioned method embodiment, the embodiment of the present application also provides a communication device (such as a base station), which includes an antenna array, and the antenna array supports being divided into a first group of antennas and a second group of antennas; wherein, in the perception time domain unit, the first group of antennas is used to send perception signals, and the second group of antennas is used to receive the reflected perception signals; in the communication time domain unit, all antennas in the antenna array are used for communication beamforming.
[0046] In this embodiment of the present application, the antenna array can be divided into a first group of antennas and a second group of antennas.
[0047] In one embodiment, the communication device further includes a storage module, which stores multiple sets of antenna profiles, at least two sets of antenna profiles corresponding to different perceived performance requirements, and the perceived performance requirements are used to determine a target antenna profile from the multiple sets of antenna profiles.
[0048] In one embodiment, the level of the perception performance requirement is positively correlated with the number of antennas in the first group of antennas, and / or the level of the perception performance requirement is positively correlated with the number of antennas in the second group of antennas.
[0049] To illustrate the communication perception method and communication device provided in the embodiments of the present application in detail, the following will be described in conjunction with specific embodiments.
[0050] The base station architecture involved in the communication sensing method provided in the embodiments of the present application is shown in Figures 2 and 3. Instead of using two antennas for transmission and reception, antenna grouping technology is used to select transmission and reception channels for the antenna array in the original large communication array. The base station architecture includes the following modules:
[0051] The communication and radar signal processing module can be divided into: a downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal processing or radar signal processing module 201 and an uplink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 202 .
[0052] The communication and radar shared devices and modules mainly include: a TDD switching group frame 203, which mainly includes a TDD transmission switching group frame 203-1 and a TDD reception switching group frame 203-2; a shared transmission digital-to-analog conversion module 204 (TX DAC in Figure 2); a transmission power amplifier 205 (PA in Figure 2); a circulator 206; an antenna array 207 (the antenna shown in Figure 2); a reception low-noise amplifier 208 (LNA in Figure 2); and a reception analog-to-digital conversion module 209 (RX ADC in Figure 2).
[0053] Figure 3 primarily illustrates antenna array 207 in Figure 2 . Antenna array 207 can be divided into two sections: one section of channels constitutes radar sensing transmit antennas 301, corresponding to the first antenna group in the previous embodiment; the other section of channels constitutes radar sensing receive antennas 302, corresponding to the second antenna group in the previous embodiment. The selection of transmit and receive channels can be determined based on sensing performance requirements and isolation between antenna channels. The number of antennas in the antenna group shown in the dashed box in Figure 3 is for illustration only and is not a specific limitation.
[0054] In a single base station with integrated communication and perception, communication and perception functions are separated by operating in different time slots. As shown in Figure 4, consistent with traditional time division duplexing (TDD) communication systems, base station transmission and reception are separated by different time slots. The base station uses D time slot 401 for downlink communication and U time slot 403 for uplink communication. These D time slots 401 and U time slot 403 correspond to the communication time domain units in the previous embodiment. The antenna array can be fully reused in the communication time slots to maximize communication performance.
[0055] By additionally adding or modifying the original time slot, the X time slot 402 is used for sensing, and the X time slot 402 corresponds to the sensing time domain unit in the above embodiment.
[0056] D timeslot 401 is used for downlink base station communications. TDD transmit handoff frame 203-1 connects to the communications processing module within the downlink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 201. The selection between the downlink OFDM signal processing module and the radar signal generation module (or radar signal processing module) is controlled by software. TDD receive handoff frame 203-2 is disconnected. The communications processing module within the downlink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 201 sends a baseband signal to the transmit digital-to-analog conversion module 204. The baseband digital signal is converted to an analog signal, amplified to the rated transmit power by a transmit power amplifier 205, passed through a circulator 206, and ultimately transmitted to the UE via the antenna array 207.
[0057] U timeslot 403 is used for uplink base station communications. TDD transmit handover frame 203-1 is disconnected, while TDD receive handover frame 203-2 is connected to the communications processing module within the uplink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 202. The selection between the uplink OFDM signal processing module and the radar signal processing module 202 is controlled by software. The analog communication signal transmitted by the UE is received by antenna array 207 and enters the low-noise amplifier 208 of the receive link. Next, the analog signal is converted to a digital signal by the receive analog-to-digital conversion module 209. The digital signal enters the communications processing module within the uplink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 202, where it performs communication functions such as signal demodulation.
[0058] X-slot 402 is used for base station sensing. The base station transmits a sensing signal to the object under test, collects the echo reflected by the object under test, and analyzes the autocorrelation characteristics of the echo and the transmitted waveform to achieve sensing, which can be distance, speed, angle, and other information.
[0059] In X time slot 402, TDD transmit switching subframe 203-1 connects to the radar signal generation module in the downlink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 201, and TDD receive switching subframe 203-2 connects to the radar signal processing module in the uplink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 202. The radar signal generation module in the downlink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 201 transmits a radar frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), linear frequency modulated (LFM), or OFDM signal. This digital signal is converted to an analog signal by the transmit digital-to-analog conversion module 204. The analog signal is amplified to the rated transmit power by the transmit power amplifier 205 and ultimately transmitted to the object under test by the radar sensing transmit antenna 301 on the antenna array 207. The echo signal reflected from the object under test is received by the radar sensing receive antenna 302 on the communicating antenna array 207 and enters the low-noise amplifier 208 of the receive link. Next, the analog signal is converted to a digital signal by the receiving analog-to-digital conversion module 209. The digital signal then enters the radar signal processing module within the uplink OFDM signal processing or radar signal processing module 202. The radar signal processing module completes pulse compression, constant false alarm rate (CFAR) determination, and multiple fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Ultimately, distance, speed, or angle estimation analysis is completed. After all analysis is complete, visualization is achieved through post-processing.
[0060] It should be noted that during base station sensing in time slot X, 402, the radar transmit signal enters the receiver in two parts. One part propagates normally to the target, which reflects back to the receiver. The other part radiates directly or leaks into the receiver through space. This energy is called radar interference. Typically, this interference level is high, causing receiver saturation and inoperability, which in turn affects radar reception of the echo signal. To address this interference, traditional solutions primarily rely on analog cancellation, digital cancellation, and spatial cancellation. Analog cancellation requires additional components such as delay and amplitude modulation, increasing hardware complexity and cost. Digital cancellation consumes additional computing resources, increasing chip power consumption and algorithm complexity. Spatial cancellation is typically achieved by spacing the two antennas apart. By increasing the spacing between the transmit and receive antennas or adding isolation measures such as chokes, a certain electrical length separation is achieved, improving isolation and reducing the leakage signal level to prevent receiver saturation. However, the separation of the two antennas impacts communication time slots. The isolation at a certain distance first leads to multi-channel beamforming, preventing antenna reuse during transmit and receive time slots. This degrades gain and other indicators, ultimately reducing the AAU's coverage distance and beam scanning capabilities. Furthermore, to maintain the same antenna gain, the transmit and receive antennas must be expanded, but this increases the windward surface, size, and cost.
[0061] To address this issue, the present invention innovatively proposes the application of antenna grouping technology in a single base station with integrated communication and sensing capabilities. During communication time slots, antenna array 207 does not differentiate between transmit and receive signals. As with conventional systems, the entire antenna array can be shared, maintaining gain, beamforming, and corresponding scanning capabilities. During sensing time slots, antenna array 207 is grouped, with antennas meeting isolation requirements assigned to transmit and receive channels. This ensures that sensing functions are achieved without affecting radar signal self-interference.
[0062] In addition, future perception scenarios will be diverse, including but not limited to smart drone low-altitude security, smart transportation, smart weather monitoring, etc. The perception performance requirements of different scenarios are different. The integrated communication and perception single base station involved in the embodiment of this application can be intelligently configured. After the product is prepared, the isolation capability between each antenna is introduced into the device configuration, and the transmitting and receiving antenna grouping selection can be adaptively completed according to the requirements of the perception scenario.
[0063] As shown in Figure 5, for scenarios with low perception performance requirements, such as drone 504 monitoring, only target intrusion identification is performed, and performance requirements such as accuracy and resolution are not high. The base station can select fewer transmitting antennas 502 (corresponding to the first group of antennas in the previous embodiment) and receiving antennas 503 (corresponding to the second group of antennas in the previous embodiment) that meet the isolation requirements. The perception signal is transmitted by the perception RF link & digital processing module 501 to the transmitting antenna 502 for transmission, and the echo signal reflected by the drone 504 enters the receiving antenna 503 and is then transmitted to the perception RF link & digital processing module 501 to implement the full perception process. The selection of fewer transmitting and receiving channels can significantly reduce power consumption and meet low-carbon and green environmental protection requirements.
[0064] As shown in Figure 6, for scenarios requiring high perception performance, such as lane and traffic flow monitoring 604, vehicles in different lanes must be accurately located, placing very high demands on accuracy and resolution. The base station must select more transmitting antennas 602 (corresponding to the first set of antennas in the previous embodiment) and receiving antennas 603 (corresponding to the second set of antennas in the previous embodiment) that meet the isolation requirements. The perception signal is transmitted from the perception RF link and digital processing module 601 to the transmitting antenna 602. The echo signal reflected by the vehicle 604 enters the receiving antenna 603 and is then transmitted to the perception RF link and digital processing module 601 to complete the full perception process. Higher performance requirements can be met by adaptively configuring more antennas to prioritize high performance.
[0065] Figure 7 illustrates the flexible and adaptive group selection process. The base station receives a request for an external sensing service and passes it to the sensing network element. The sensing network element then passes the sensing scenario information and tasks to the baseband unit (BBU) baseband processing unit. For example, if a sensing service request for drone intrusion detection is received, the core sensing network element passes the request and the initiated sensing task to the BBU baseband processing unit. The BBU baseband processing unit then sends the sensing signaling and sensing sequence data to the AAU and RRU RF processing units. It should be noted that the AAU and RRU RF processing units internally store multiple configuration files with different isolation levels for transmit and receive antennas. The isolation between different antennas in these configuration files is measured through OTA antenna testing during production. This isolation level is then applied to the design of different scenarios, ultimately generating multiple configuration files based on the design results. These multiple configuration files can cover basic synaesthesia scenarios, including smart transportation, smart low-altitude, and smart living, and are not limited to those described in Figure 7. For smart transportation, basic configuration files (for high-speed rail and intersection intrusion detection) and high-performance configuration files (for autonomous driving, etc.) are differentiated based on isolation metrics. After receiving the sensing scenario signaling and sensing sequence data from the BBU, the AAU&RRU RF processing unit loads the internally stored configuration file. This configuration file is then passed to the intermediate frequency (IF) processing chip within the AAU&RRU. The IF processing chip initiates channel-level interrupt control according to the determined configuration file. The sensing signal is ultimately transmitted to the target via the interrupt-controlled RF channel and antenna. The target is then transmitted back to the base station. Based on this, the isolation and RF channels can be flexibly configured based on the scenario, enabling flexible configuration options for transmitting and receiving a small number of channels in low-requirement, low-power scenarios, or a large number of channels in high-performance scenarios.
[0066] In general, unlike traditional integrated communication and perception base stations, the embodiments of the present application creatively propose flexible antenna grouping technology, which can ensure that the existing communication hardware architecture remains unchanged, while adding additional perception functions to achieve rapid deployment and cost reduction.
