Description

[0001] Commissioning of a lighting-and-communication arrangement

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention is directed to a lighting-and-communication arrangement, to a lighting-and-communication device, to a respective method of operation for a commissioning process of the lighting-and-communication device and arrangement and to a computer program

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] Outdoor lighting arrangements or lighting grids (e.g. street lighting systems or arrangements) offer a near-ideal grid to deploy wireless communication infrastructure (WiFi, telecommunications 4G / 5G, E-band and V-band backhaul) because it offers proximity (to people, traffic), scale (ubiquitous presence), granularity (distance between poles matches typical requirements of radiofrequency network design) and elevation (height to mount equipment for signal coverage). One key challenge to get acceptance from cities and the public, is to provide aesthetic solutions and minimized form factors. There is a strong wish to hide technology in unseen places. From technology point of view, this puts pressure on design of the overall wireless communication a system.

[0006] The ever-growing data consumption (data throughput) require higher bandwidths, which in turn requires the use of ever higher frequencies. The radio frequencies used for telecommunication’s 5G standard are at first increasing to 3-6 GHz and will in the coming years grow to 26 GHz and beyond. These frequencies are typically referred to as mmWave (millimetre wave) because the wavelengths are in the order of (several) mm. Backhaul frequencies are typically 60 GHz, 70 GHz, and will over time grow beyond 100 GHz. Signals at these frequencies behave like optical waves in the sense that they do not penetrate walls and objects. Communication between two points require a clear line of sight (LOS), which means the transmitter and receiver must “see” each other via an uninterrupted, unobstructed, straight line.

[0007] Document WO 2022 / 017908 Al describes an intelligent lighting control system that comprises a central controller for remote communication with a plurality of network controllers provided in communication nodes, which, in an example, are a group of street lamps or street lights, parking area lamps or park area lights, or other outdoor lamps or lights, and can therefore be referred to as lighting-and-communication devices.

[0008] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0009] Due to the integration of communication units in lighting devices, two technologies that require separate commissioning procedures are integrated into one device, namely a lighting control unit and a communication device integrated into a single so called lighting-and-communication device. As the commissioning flows are currently separated this means that two separate procedures need to be followed to complete the commissioning process which will increase the effort and double the chances for errors.

[0010] As the placement of the lighting-and-communication devices is crucial for proper operation of the system, the actual installation details (such as orientation of the device) are very important. To ensure proper installation, the arrangement design is typically transferred to a diagram and installation instructions are created for an installer and there is no automated verification if the installation is performed correctly. If a lighting-and- communication device is, for whatever reason, installed in the wrong location, commissioning will fail as the lighting-and-communication device tries to connect to a neighboring lighting-and-communication device that is not actually there, or one of the devices will not be able to communicate at the desired throughput. The lighting-and- communication devices will not be able to establish a sufficiently strong communication link as the next lighting-and-communication device does not correspond to that in the installation instructions.

[0011] The failure will cause delays and increase costs as the problem needs to be diagnosed, the installer needs to go onsite, verify installation and potentially will need to fix the installation sequence. The same problem arises during field repair or service of a lighting- and-communication device where the communication device, e.g. a radio unit, is replaced and the network map and the commissioning should adapt automatically or manually to the new (or replaced) communication device in the same (or replaced) lighting-and- communication device.

[0012] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a lighting-and- communication arrangement that enables a more efficient commissioning process.

[0013] According to a first aspect of the invention, a lighting-and-communication arrangement is provided. The lighting-and-communication arrangement comprises a plurality of lighting-and-communication devices and an arrangement control unit. Each of the lighting- and-communication devices comprises a lighting device and a communication device. The lighting device comprises a lighting unit for providing light for illuminating a space and a lighting control unit for controlling operation of the lighting unit. The lighting control unit is signally connected to the arrangement control unit via a first communication link, and comprises or is connected to a location ascertainment unit that is configured to ascertain location data indicative of a current installation location of the lighting-and-communication device.

[0014] The communication device comprises a radio-communication unit that is configured to establish one or more radio-communication links with radio-communication units of additional (or: other, or: other respective) lighting-and-communication devices of (the plurality of lighting-and-communication devices of) the lighting-and-communication arrangement.

[0015] The arrangement control unit is configured to ascertain respective lightingdevice data comprising lighting-device identification data identifying (or: univocally identifying) the respective lighting device and the respective location data. The arrangement control unit is configured to receive radio-identification data identifying (or: univocally identifying) the respective radio-communication unit, wherein the radio-identification data further associates (or: univocally associates) the respective radio-communication unit to the respective lighting device. Further, the arrangement control unit is configured to generate, using the lighting-device identification data, the radio-identification data and the location data, a network planning database indicative of pairs of communication devices suitable for establishing a radio-communication link between them, according to a selection algorithm. The arrangement control unit is also configured to generate, using the network planning database, and to provide, to the respective radio-communication units, commissioning data for controlling operation of the communication devices for establishing the radiocommunication links between the pairs of communication devices. The respective radiocommunication units are then configured to establish the radio-communication links according to the commissioning procedure (a sequence of steps and commands to configure various settings of the radio device, to upload data to the radio unit or download data from it)

[0016] Therefore, according to the invention, the combination of the lighting-device identification data the location data and the radio-identification data pertaining to each lighting-and-communication device that is received by the arrangement control unit enables the generation of the location specific network planning database that is indicative of pairs of communication devices, which, based on their specific location and the nature of the communication protocol or technology used for the radio-communication link, are suitable for establishing said link, as indicated by a suitable selection algorithm for selecting pairs of radio-communication units, thereby enabling a more efficient commissioning process, both after an initial installation as well as after replacement of one or more already installed lighting-and-communication devices or a radio-communication unit.

[0017] In the following, embodiments of the lighting-and-communication arrangement of the first aspect of the present invention are presented.

[0018] Preferably, the lighting control unit has a communication function and is configured to connect to a cloud, a gateway or another lighting control device, in particular via a suitable wireless communication link in accordance with a predetermined wireless communication protocol. This communication is typically, but not necessarily, only related to lighting controls functions and uses narrowband communication, i.e. very low bandwidths, e.g., well below 1 Mbps. Also preferably, the communication devices have a communication function that enables to wirelessly connect to neighbor communication devices, using for instance broadband communication protocols with high bandwidths of more than 1 Mbps, typically 1 Gbps or more. The communication device is used to transport high amounts of data, such as for backhaul of telecommunications or internet connections. Typically, it is not used to transport data related to lighting controls functions. The two devices, i.e., the lighting device and the communication device can, in an embodiment, be integrated into one integrated device, but preferably are two separate devices that are installed in the same location, i.e. on the same light pole and preferably on or inside the same luminaire.

[0019] Thus, a lighting-and-communication device comprises of a lighting device, with a lighting control unit and a communication device, combined into one integrated device (e.g. a street light). In an embodiment, the communication device is not mechanically integrated, into the lighting device but can be "added on" such as by attaching it to a preexisting socket on the lighting device or is electrically connected to the lighting device. Optionally, lighting device may provide electrical power to the communication unit. In another embodiment, the provided electrical power is not mains power i.e. the provided electrical power is different from the electrical power provided to the luminaire by the lighting grid.

[0020] In another embodiment, the arrangement control unit is configured to receive the respective lighting-device identification data and the respective location data directly from respective lighting control units. Additionally, or alternatively the arrangement control unit receives the lighting-device identification data location data from a lighting control cloud database (which in turn gets its data from the plurality of lighting control units) instead of receiving data directly from the lighting control units. This enables a limitation of the amount of traffic to / from lighting control units that are typically mobile subscription (4G / 5G) devices.

[0021] In an embodiment, the communication device is connected to the lighting control unit, and the lighting control unit is further configured to ascertain the radioidentification data and to provide said radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit via the first communication link. Alternatively, the radio-identification data can be included in the database from luminaire production data or provided via a separate communication link.

[0022] In an embodiment, the arrangement control unit is configured to generate the commissioning data, based on a commissioning process which is carried out by a network management / monitoring system, also referred to as NMS. Preferably, the NMS is configured to communicate with each of the radio-communication units in accordance with a suitable wireless communication protocol.

[0023] Preferably, in a particular embodiment, the location ascertainment unit is a global navigation satellite system module, for instance a global positioning system (GPS) module, that provides geolocation and time information via a suitable receiver, such as the location ascertainment unit, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to three or more navigation satellites. Using the signals received from the navigation satellite, the global navigation system module is configured to determine the location information, e.g. GPS coordinates. Alternatively, in another embodiment, the location ascertainment unit is configured to receive the location data from an external source.

[0024] Preferably, the respective lighting control units are connected to the arrangement control unit via a dedicated radio-communication link, for instance receiving operation instructions from the arrangement control unit and / or for providing status data to the arrangement control unit. The arrangement control unit is therefore suitable for controlling operation of the lighting devices for illuminating an area, such as, for instance, a street or group of streets, a neighborhood, one or more floors of a building or groups of buildings, etc. The communication between the lighting control units and the arrangement control unit can be also established via a lighting control cloud (a database) to which the arrangement control unit has access and that includes the necessary data provided by each of the lighting control units. In an embodiment, the plurality of communication devices, each integrated together with a lighting device to form a lighting-and-communication device are suitable for deploying a wireless communication infrastructure or network, for instance based on WiFi, 4G, 5G, E-band and V-band backhaul etc, offering proximity (to people, traffic), scale (ubiquitous presence), granularity (distance between poles matches typical requirements of radiofrequency network design) and elevation (height to mount equipment for signal coverage). This wireless communication network provided by the plurality of communication devices may be different in terms for instance of communication frequency than that formed by the lighting control units for controlling operation of the lighting devices.

[0025] In an embodiment, the arrangement control unit is configured to generate, using the lighting-device data from the plurality of lighting-and-communication devices, a lighting-device database comprising associations between respective lighting-device identification data and the corresponding location data of the lighting-and-communication device. Further, the arrangement control unit is configured to generate, using the lightingdevice database and the radio-identification data, a linked database comprising associations between the radio-communication unit and the location data of the respective lighting-and- communication device. The arrangement control unit may also be configured to generate the network planning database using the linked database in accordance to the selection algorithm.

[0026] In another embodiment, for performing the commissioning of the communication devices, the commissioning data generated and provided by the arrangement is indicative of a first radio-communication unit that is selected as a first initiator node, wherein the first initiator node is controlled for establishing a first radio-communication link with a first responder node, the first initiator node and the first responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database. Once the first radio-communication link has been established, the first responder node is controlled as a second initiator node for establishing a second radio-communication link with a second responder node, the second initiator node and the second responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database, and wherein each respective nthresponder node is consecutively controlled as a (n+l)thinitiator node for establishing an (n+l)thradio-communication link with an (n+l)111responder node, the (n+l)thinitiator node and the (n+l)111responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database. In this case n represents the number of distinct initiator node-responder node pairs in the arrangement, as determined by the network planning database generated based on the location data, the lighting-device identification data and the radio-identification data, in accordance with the selection algorithm.

[0027] Preferably, in an embodiment, the radio-communication unit of one or more lighting-and-communication devices comprises a plurality of antenna elements having respective different main emission directions. Preferably, an angle between the main emission direction of the plurality of the antenna elements in a given plane (e.g. parallel to the ground) is substantially constant. In an example, a radio-communication unit comprises two antennas, arranged so that the main emission direction in a given reference plane is substantially 180°, i.e. they are emitting in opposite directions. Alternatively, a radiocommunication unit may comprise three antenna elements arranged with the respective emission directions of 120° or four antenna elements arranged with the respective emission directions of 90°. Other embodiments may comprise any number of antenna elements with any different main emission directions.

[0028] In another embodiment, the lighting control unit is configured to ascertain and to provide, to the arrangement control unit, the lighting-device data of the respective lighting device and the radio-identification data of the respective communication device. For instance, the radio-communication unit comprises the radio-identification data in the form of a (built- in) NFC, RFID or BLE tag. The lighting control unit determines or receives said radioidentification data from the radio-communication unit and provides said radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit via the first communication link. In an embodiment, the built in tag contains very little information, e.g. only an identification code. Additional information is obtained from a (cloud-based) database, which provides the data based on the device identification.

[0029] In an embodiment of the lighting-and-communication arrangement of the first aspect, the lighting-and-communication device comprises a first marker element indicative of the lighting-device identification data and / or a second marker element indicative of the radioidentification data. The lighting-and-communication devices thus comprise a first marker element such as a service tag comprising a barcode, a QR-code or any other suitable type of code for a code-based identification system that makes each lighting device uniquely identifiable. The first marker element may also provide maintenance, installation, and spare part information applicable to the individual lighting device. Thus, the first marker element provides lighting related details, specifically related to documentation, driver programming details, the lighting control unit, hardware ID, such as the lighting-device data, etc. For instance, the first marker element can be printed on a packaging of the lighting-and- communication device, so details can be identified before opening the packaging, but, preferably, it is also supplied on the lighting device so the lighting device details can be identified when the lighting-and-communication device is installed or serviced. The second marker element, which can be a separated marker element or be integrated in the first marker element as a common marker element or common service tag, includes a barcode, QR-code or any other suitable type of code for a code-based identification systems for identifying the radio-communication unit and is indicative of the radio-identification data, which can be for instance a unique node name, serial number, a MAC address or the like. The second marker element can therefore be a code (bar code, QR-code), or a NFC / RFID, BLE tag, indicative of a node name, serial number, MAC address or other information that identifies (or: univocally identifies) the built in radio-communication unit.

[0030] Providing the first marker element for identifying the lighting device and the second marker element for identifying the communication device (e.g., the radiocommunication unit), or a common marker element identifying both the lighting device and the communication device, links the unique node name (radio-identification data) of a radiocommunication unit to the lighting control unit (e.g., OLC) which in turn links the installation location of the radio-communication unit to a unique location given by the location data (e.g., GPS coordinates). This information gets logged at the arrangement control unit thereby enabling an application that connects to the arrangement control unit to determine which radio-communication units are suitable for forming a pair in order to establish a radio-communication link to build a radiofrequency network.

[0031] In an embodiment, and in the case that the lighting control unit does not have access to the second marker element, the lighting-and-communication arrangement may comprise a data transmission device configured, using the second marker element, to ascertain the radio-identification data, and to provide the radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit. The data transmission device can be additionally used to ascertain, using the first marker element, the lighting-device-identification data, so that the provided radio-identification data is associated (or: univocally associated) to the lighting-device identification data.

[0032] The data transmission device can be, for instance, a mobile phone or a computer, or a tablet, with a suitable app that connects to the arrangement control unit and that is able to read the first marker element indicative of the lighting-device identification data and the second marker element indicative of the radio-identification data (eg., QR-code, NFC / RFID, BLE tag containing node name, serial number, MAC address or other information that identifies (or: univocally identifies) the built in radio-communication unit).

[0033] Alternatively, the data transmission device can be configured to ascertain location data indicative of the lighting device (for instance via a GPS) and, using the second marker element, to ascertain the radio-identification data. The data transmission device is then configured to provide, to the arrangement control unit, lighting-and-communication device identification data indicative of the location data and of the radio-identification data. Providing the ascertained location data (e.g. via a GPS module integrated in the data transmission device) together with the radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit enables the association of the lighting-device identification data to the radioidentification data e.g. by means of the similar location between that already included in the database and the one received, which enables an identification of the lighting device.

[0034] In an embodiment, the radio-communication unit is configured to transmit and receive radiofrequency communication signals with a frequency higher that 2 GHz, e.g. suitable for WiFi meshing / backhaul as an suitable technology for the communication device.

[0035] In a preferred embodiment, wherein the radio-communication unit is a mmWave radio unit configured to transmit and receive radiofrequency communication signals with a frequency higher than 3 GHz. Preferably, the radio-communication unit is configured as a device that is compliant with the 5G telecommunication standard. For instance, the radio-communication unit is in an embodiment configured to transmit / receive wireless communication signals in a frequency band up to 6GHz, preferably up to 30 GHz, 60 GHz, 70 GHz or up to 100GHz. In another embodiment, the radio-communication unit is configured to transmit / receive wireless communication signals in a frequency band with frequencies higher than 100 GHz. As explained in the introductory part of the present description, signals at these frequencies behave like optical waves and a communication link between two radio-communication unit requires a clear line of sight (LOS) between transceivers, which means the transmitter and receiver must “see” each other via an uninterrupted, unobstructed, straight line. For these frequency bands, the selection algorithm is advantageously configured to, using the received location data determining the pairs of communication devices that are most suitable for establishing the radio-communication links.

[0036] In an embodiment, the first communication link between the lighting control unit and the arrangement control unit is a radio-communication link, preferably a 4G or 5G radio-communication link. In another embodiment, the first communication link is a sub GHz non- cellular link.

[0037] In yet another embodiment, the first communication link is a wired communication link. For example, a plurality of lighting units can be connected a wired interface, such as, but not limited to, a DALI bus to a local gateway either as hub-spoke or in a mesh topology. One or more local gateways can be configured to aggregate data from the multiple lighting units and later transfer this data to the arrangement control unit.

[0038] According to a second aspect of the invention, a lighting-and-communication device is described. The lighting-and communication device of the second aspect is suitable for a lighting-and-communication arrangement according to the first aspect of the invention and comprises a lighting device and a communication device. The lighting device comprises a lighting unit for providing light and a lighting control unit for controlling operation of the lighting unit, the lighting control unit being signally connected to the arrangement control unit via a first communication link, and comprising a location ascertainment unit configured to ascertain location data indicative of a current installation location of the lighting-and- communication device. The communication device comprises a radio-communication unit for establishing one or more radio-communication links with radio-communication units of additional lighting-and-communication devices of the lighting-and-communication arrangement.

[0039] The lighting control unit is configured to ascertain and provide to the arrangement control unit, via the first communication link, respective lighting-device data comprising lighting-device identification data identifying (or: univocally identifying) the respective lighting device and the respective location data and radio-identification data identifying (or: univocally identifying) the respective radio-communication unit, wherein the radio-identification data further associates (or: univocally associates) the respective radiocommunication unit to the respective lighting device, and the radio-communication unit is configured to receive, from the arrangement control unit, commissioning data for controlling operation of the communication devices for establishing the radio-communication links between a of communication devices, and to establish the radio-communication links according to the commissioning data.

Typically, a modular mmWave radio comprises a modulation unit communicatively coupled to an antenna system and configured to control the transmission of transmitted wireless signals by the antenna.

[0074] The lighting devices 104a, 104b comprise a respective lighting unit 108a, 108b for providing light for illuminating a space, for example a street 140, and a lighting control unit 110 (see Fig. 2) for controlling operation of the lighting unit 108, 108a, 108b. The lighting control unit 110 is signally connected to the arrangement control unit 150 via a first communication link 112, 112a, 112b, and comprises, or is connected to, a location ascertainment unit 114 configured to ascertain location data LD indicative of a current installation location, IL ILa, ILb of the respective lighting-and-communication device 102, 102a, 102b. The location ascertainment unit 114 is preferably a GPS module configured to ascertain GPS coordinates indicative of a current location of the location ascertainment unit 114.

[0075] The communication device 106, 106a, 106b comprises a radio-communication unit 116 that may be connected to the lighting control unit 110 and configured to establish one or more radio-communication links 118 with radio-communication units of additional lighting-and-communication devices of the lighting-and-communication arrangement. The radio-communication unit is, in this example, a mmWave radio unit. Shorter wavelengths in this band permit the use of smaller antennas to achieve the same high directivity and high antenna gain as larger ones in lower frequency bands. The high usable channel capacity in this band might allow it to serve some applications that would otherwise use fiber-optic communication or very short links such as for the interconnect of circuit boards.

[0076] Given the high directivity of the radio frequency signals in the mmWave band, the radio-communication unit 116 preferably comprises a plurality (e.g., two, three or four) of antenna elements 116.1, 116.2 having respective different main emission directions ED.1, ED.2. For other RF technologies, such as, but not limited to WiFi, the radio and antenna setup (e.g. number of antenna elements, angular separations, etc.) may differ from that of the mmWave radio described here.

[0077] Typically, the RF antennas, or antenna elements 116.1, 116.2 are mounted together on a compact mechanical construction (“antenna mount assembly”). The antenna mount assembly can be a rigid construction that aims to mount the antennas with fixed orientation with respect to one another (in the case of four antenna elements, at 90° angles that together cover 360 degrees of signal in the horizontal plane), to fixate the antennas with fixed orientation on the luminaire, to provide heat sinking for the antennas (thus, preferably, the antenna mount assembly would is comprised mostly of metal). The antenna mount assembly enables mounting position (location) and orientation to be largely independent of the base band unit of the radio-communication unit. The antenna elements can be for instance connected to the base band unit by cables of a certain length. The length of these cables ensures sufficient independence of the location of the antennas elements relative to the location of the base band unit. Alternatively, the antennas can be connected via connectors on a PCB (i.e. without cables), or with cables that are essentially internal to the communication device.

[0078] In the arrangement 100, the arrangement control unit 150 is configured to receive, from the respective lighting control units 110, respective lighting-device data 122, 122a, 122b comprising lighting-device identification data LD, LDa, LDb univocally identifying the respective lighting device 102, 102a, 102b, and the respective location data LD, LDa, LDb. The arrangement control unit 150 is further configured to receive radioidentification data RID, RIDa, RIDb univocally identifying the respective radiocommunication unit 116, wherein the radio-identification data further univocally associates the respective radio-communication unit to the respective lighting device. The arrangement control unit 150 is also configured to generate, using the lighting-device identification data LID, the radio-identification data RID and the location data LD, provided by the respective lighting-and-communication devices 102, a network planning database 160 indicative of pairs of communication devices (e.g., the communication devices of lighting-and- communication devices 102a and 102b) that are suitable for establishing a radiocommunication link 118 between them, according to a selection algorithm. The selection algorithm may be a software implemented algorithm. Alternatively, the pairs can be identified manually, for instance by an operator or technician. The network planning database is therefore generated using the received or the manually input (e.g. in case of a replacement of a communication device) lighting-device identification data LID, the radio-identification data RID and the location data (LD). Further, the arrangement control unit is configured to generate, using the network planning database 160, and to provide, to the respective radiocommunication units 116, commissioning data 124 for controlling operation of the communication devices 106 for establishing the radio-communication links 118 between the pairs of communication devices of the lighting-and-communication devices 102a and 102b. The radio-communication units are configured to establish the radio-communication links 118 according to the commissioning data 124.

[0079] A flow diagram of an exemplary commissioning process of the lighting-and- communication arrangement 100 is shown in Fig. 3, in particular of a street lighting arrangement, for instance a lighting control system (LCS). First, the lighting-and- communication device (referred to as broadband luminaire in Fig. 3) is assembled in a factory and arranged at a given installation location. The radio-communication link commissioning flow for the broadband luminaire proposed here within depends on the broadband luminaire installation method and completeness of factory (assembly) data. For establishing a bidirectional radiofrequency communication link, the following procedure has to be applied twice, once for each of the communication devices. Two different scenarios can be distinguished, which are depicted in Figs. 4 and 5 respectively.

[0080] In a first scenario (see also Fig. 4), the lighting-and-communication devices are assembled in a luminaire factory including the communication device with the mmWave radio unit that includes four antenna elements, and the lighting-device identification data LID is logged together with accompanying radio-identification data RID data into a single linked list, which is provided to the arrangement control unit. This is represented by a positive answer (Y es) to the question: is the radio ID in the street light database? The lighting-device database 152 and the linked database 154 are then synchronized / updated with the newly created linked list that associates the lighting device with the communication device.

[0081] The commissioning flow for the broadband luminaire comprises the following steps:

[0082] After luminaire installation and lighting part commissioning (i.e. provision of the location data LD and the lighting-device identification data LDI via the first communication link,) each luminaire has identified its position (e.g., via the built-in GPS of the lighting control unit). The central lighting-device database 152 with lighting device ID’s vs location data is updated (synced) with this information. In lighting-and-communication devices wherein there is no connection between the communication device and the lighting control unit, he radio-identification data RID is not shared over the first communication link 122 but for example already available at the arrangement control unit 150 (e.g., existing in linked database (154) from luminaire production data (see e.g. Fig. 4) or provided after uploading the radio-identification data RID via app or any other method (see e.g. Fig. 5). Alternatively, if the communication device and the lighting control unit are connected, and the lighting control unit has access to the RID, the lighting control unit can be configured to provide said radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit via the wireless communication link 122.

[0083] A network managing and commissioning system (NMS) 162 collects the data from the central databases, i.e., the lighting-device database 152 (luminaire ID vs location), the linked database 152 (luminaire ID vs radio ID) and generates the database with RF network planning (RF planning per radio ID). The combination of this data locates the position of each the installed broadband luminaires and its intended RF radio-communication link. Typically, a default database for RF-planning is already available, and is potentially adapted due to updated or changed RID or location data, or it can be generated from scratch.

[0084] The NMS can now perform the RF network commissioning starting from an initiator node (e.g. a radio-communication unit that is connected to the NMS system) as explained below with reference to Fig. 6, (in summary, initiator vs responder sequence and build-up for each of the radio-communication links).

[0085] Thus, in this first scenario, the broadband luminaire is assembled in a luminaire factory including the mmWave radio node and the following should be ensured: a) the luminaire asset data (lighting-device identification data) is logged together with accompanying radio-identification data into a single linked list; and b) the linked database 154 is synchronized / updated with the newly created linked list (with relation between luminaire asset data and radio ID).

[0086] In the second scenario, exemplary depicted in Fig. 5, and which corresponds to a negative answer (No) to the question: “is the radio ID in the street light database?”, the broadband luminaire is assembled in luminaire factory but the relation between lightingdevice identification data and radio-identification data of the radio-communication unit is not yet logged and cloud-synced yet from factory. Alternatively these steps are also taken when a broadband luminaire is replaced with a new radio-communication unit in the field. The following steps should be ensured: a) the luminaire asset data (lighting-device identification data) is logged and preferably printed onto a first marker element and attached to the luminaire in factory. The central lighting-device database with luminaire ID’s is updated (synchronized) with this information; and c) the radio-identification data (e.g. QR code, NFC / RFID / BLE tag containing node name, serial number, mac address or other) is logged and printed onto a separate second marker element or combined marker element (e.g. QR code and / or RFID, NFC or BLE tag) and attached to the broadband luminaire in factory or field (during service or repair).

[0087] The RF commissioning flow for the broadband luminaire is shown in Figure 5.- At luminaire installation and / or radio servicing or replacement the service or installer person uses a data transmission device 155, such as a mobile phone with a suitable app and scans the first marker element (e.g., service tag) indicative of the lighting-device identification data LID, and the second marker element (e.g., QR code and / or NFC / RFID / BLE tag containing node name, serial number, mac address or other or built-in into radio) indicative of the radio-identification data (RID); and provides this to the arrangement control unit 150. Fig. 5 shows a single combined marker element 157.

[0088] The linked database 154 is synchronized / updated with the newly created relation between the luminaire asset data (lighting-device identification data) and radioidentification data as scanned and provided by the data transmission device 155 that is connected to the arrangement control unit.

[0089] After luminaire installation and lighting part commissioning each luminaire has identified its position (e.g., via the built-in GPS of the lighting control node). The central lighting-device database 152 with luminaire ID’s vs locations is updated (synchronized) with this information. Alternatively the transmission device 155 contains a provision for location acquisition (e.g. via GPS) and is configured to transmit both the location data as well as the determined RID (e.g. from the marker) to the arrangement control unit. Together with the later reported luminaire location (by OLC) all needed data is also acquired to proceed. In this alternative example, there is no explicit need of scanning the first marker to ascertain the LID by the transmission device 155.

[0090] A network managing and commissioning system (NMS) 162 collects the data from the central databases, i.e., the lighting-device database 152 (luminaire ID vs location), the linked database 152 (luminaire ID vs radio ID) and generates or adapts the database with RF network planning (RF planning per radio ID). The combination of this data locates the position of each the installed broadband luminaires and its intended RF radio-communication link.

[0091] The NMS can now perform the RF network commissioning starting from an initiator node (e.g. a radio-communication unit that is connected to the NMS system) as explained below with reference to Fig. 6, (in summary, initiator vs responder sequence and build-up for each of the RF radio-communication links).

[0092] Specifically, scanning the first and the second marker element enables a linkage of the unique node name of a mmWave radio (radio-identification data) to the OLC (lighting-device identification data), which in turn links the mmWave radio location to unique GPS coordinates. This information gets logged into the existing database and enables any application that connects to one of these databases to determine which mmWave radios are neighbours to one another and can see each other to build the RF Network. This solves the issue of installing luminaires at wrong locations and not being able to commission the RF networks.

[0093] Fig. 6 shows a schematic diagram describing a commissioning procedure for the communication devices of a lighting-and-communication arrangement lOOd.

[0094] After the provision of the lighting-device identification data LID, the radioidentification data RID and the location data LD, either directly by the lighting control unit 110 or with the assistance of a data transmission device 155 as explained with reference to Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 respectively, the arrangement control unit 150 is configured to generate the updated lighting-device database 152, the linked database 154 and the network planning database 160, which comprises a list of those pairs of communication devices, which, according to a selection algorithm based on their installation location and the technological requirements of the radio-communication link to be established are most suitable for establishing said communication link. The lighting-and-communication arrangement lOOd comprises four lighting-and-communication devices, shown as circles. Each lighting-and- communication device comprises a respective lighting device LI, L2, L3 and L4 and a communication device with a respective radio-communication unit Rl.x, R2.x, R3.x and R4.x, each comprising four different antenna elements Ry.l, Ry.2, Ry.3 and Ry.4 having different main emission directions (e.g. 90°C relative to each of the neighboring antenna elements). Here x and y range between 1 and 4, wherein x refers to a respective one of the antenna elements and y refers to a respective one of the radio-communication units. Thus, the updated states of the databases 152, 154 and 156 is shown in Fig. 6. The lighting-device database comprises entries that link the lighting device LI to the position IL1, the lighting device L2 to the position L2, the lighting device L3 to the position L3 and the lighting device L4 to the position IL4. The linked database 154 associates the lighting device LI to the radiocommunication unit Rl.x, the lighting device L2 to the radio-communication unit R2.x, the lighting device L3 to the radio-communication unit R3.x, and the lighting device L4 to the radio-communication unit R4.x. Thus, there is a univocal association between the respective radio-communication units and a location, which is used to generate the network planning database 160, according to the selection algorithm for selecting pairs. The selected pairs are, in this example, R1-R2, R2-R3 and R3-R4. Preferably, in the case of having multiple antenna elements, the pairs include information regarding which of the antenna element is used for each radio-communication link 118. Once the network planning database 160 is generated, the arrangement control unit 150 generates and provides commissioning data 124 for controlling operation of the communication devices. For instance, the commissioning data 124 is indicative of a first radio-communication unit Rl, in particular R1.4, that is selected as a first initiator node Nal, wherein the first initiator node Nal is controlled for establishing a first radio-communication link 118.1 with a first responder node Nbl, in this case R2, in particular R2.1, the first initiator node Rl and the first responder node R2 being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database 160. Once the first radio-communication link 118.1 has been established, the first responder node R2, and in particular R2.3 is controlled as a second initiator node for establishing a second radiocommunication link 118.2 with a second responder node R3, in particular R3.2, the second initiator node R2 and the second responder node R3 being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database 160. In general, each respective nthresponder node (e.g. R3) is consecutively controlled as a (n+l)thinitiator node for establishing an (n+l)thradio-communication link (e.g., 118.3) with an (n+l)111responder node (e.g., R4), the (n+l)thinitiator node and the (n+l)111responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database 160.

[0095] A radio-communication link may be setup in a dual way where each link setup has a initiator-responder pair but reversed, meaning that each (radio) side of the node / luminaire pair is both initiator as well as responder for the same RF link. For example RF link 118.2 might require setting up the link with both link pairs (R3.3 as initiator and R2.2 as responder and also R2.2 as initiator and R3.3 is responder). While this generic initiator / responder generally applies, it is also possible for a sector of a radio / luminaire node to have multiple radio-communication links to other nearby devices. For example a potential link between R4.4 and R2.2 may be needed and possible. The radio-communication link setup flow (RID, initiator, responder,... ) explained herewithin is applicable for instance for mmWave-based communication devices. Alternative RF technologies for the lighting-and- communication device (like Wifi or other) might have a different way of setting up a wireless connection between the 2 sides of the link, but still a knowledge of the position and radio ID of both sides is crucial in this process.

[0096] Thus, in a preferred example, in an outdoor luminaire (i.e., a lighting-and- communication device), the lighting device is commissioned using GPS technology. The outdoor lighting controller (OLC, as a lighting control unit) that is included in the outdoor luminaire not only controls the operation of the lighting device, but also has a GPS receiver and can communicate with the back end in arrangement control unit 150, which may be a cloud system, using for instance 4G or 5G technology. After physical installation of the luminaire and after powering the outdoor luminaire for the first time the OLC will announce its presence to the 4G network and will send its unique identifier, the lighting-device identification data, together with its GPS location (location data) to the arrangement control unit.

[0097] The OLC node that represents the outdoor luminaire becomes visual in a User Interface at the correct location using the GPS coordinates that have been retrieved from the lighting-device database. A user can now verify location and update additional asset information if required.

[0098] The mmWave radio-communication units are commissioned using the radioidentification data (in practice these are the node names of both radios in the wireless link) in a linear or meshed topology. An initiator node, node that initiates the commissioning step, connects to the responder node, node that is being connected to, using the unique node name of the responder. Once the RF link is successfully created, the responder node can become the initiator node towards other mmWave radios in the network topology, which may be, for instance, a mesh topology, a tree topology a ring topology or any other suitable topology. The RF links need to be created before being able to continue further into the network, this means that knowing the neighbors of initiator nodes (in location, ID or name) is crucial to build the network.

[0099] Fig. 7 shows a flow diagram of an exemplary method 600 for controlling operation of a lighting-and-communication arrangement, in particular for a commissioning process as explained above. A subset of the steps of method 600 also form an embedded method 500 for controlling operation of a lighting-and-communication device for said commissioning process. The method steps belonging to both methods 500 and 600 begin with the digit 5. The method 600 comprises, in a step 502, (which therefore belongs also to method 500), ascertaining location data location data indicative of a current installation location of the lighting-and-communication device. The method also includes, in a step 504, providing via a first communication link, lighting-device data comprising lighting-device identification data univocally identifying the respective lighting device and the respective location data, and, in a step 504, providing radio-identification data univocally identifying the respective radio-communication unit, wherein the radio-identification data (radio-ID data) further univocally associates the respective radio-communication unit to the respective lighting device. The provision of the radio-identification data can be done by the lighting- and-communication arrangement, for instance, by the lighting control unit, in cases where the lighting control unit has access to said radio-identification data. If not, the provision can be done by an external device which is configured to read a marker element and to provide the radio-identification data to the arrangement control unit. The method comprises, in steps 602 and 604 (and therefore a step not belonging to method 500), receiving, at an arrangement control unit, the lighting-device identification data, the radio-identification data and the location data, and in a step 606, generating, using the received lighting-device identification data, the radio-identification data and location data, a network planning database (DB) indicative of pairs of communication devices suitable for establishing a radio-communication link between them, according to a selection algorithm. The method then comprises, in a step 608, generating, using the network planning database, and providing, to the respective radiocommunication units, commissioning data for controlling operation of the communication devices for establishing the radio-communication links between the pairs of communication devices. The method further includes, in a step 508, receiving commissioning data for controlling operation of the communication devices for establishing the radio-communication links between pairs of communication devices, and in a step 510, establishing the radiocommunication links according to the received commissioning data.

[0100] Preferably, in an exemplary method, the step of generating the network planning database comprises, in a step 606a, generating, using the lighting-device data from the plurality of lighting-and-communication devices, a lighting-device database (DB) comprising associations between respective lighting-device identification data and the corresponding location data of the lighting-and-communication device, in a step 606b, generating, using the lighting-device database and the radio-identification data, a linked database comprising associations between the radio-communication unit and the location data of the respective lighting-and-communication device, and then generating (606) the network planning database using the linked database in accordance to the selection algorithm.

[0101] Additionally, or alternatively, for establishing the radio-communication links between pairs of communication devices, the method comprises, in a step 510a selecting a radio-communication unit as a first initiator node, and controlling the first initiator node for establishing, in a step 510b, a first radio-communication link with a first responder node, the first initiator node and the first responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database. Once the first radiocommunication link has been established, the method comprising selecting, in step 510c the current responder node (nthresponder node) as a next initiator node (n+l)thand establishing, in step 510d, a next radio-communication link with a next (n+l)th. Thus, each respective nth responder node consecutively as a (n+l)thinitiator node for establishing an (n+l)thradiocommunication link with an (n+l)111responder node, the (n+l)thinitiator node and the (n+l)111responder node being associated as a suitable pair of communication devices in the network planning database. Then n is incremented by 1 and a next radio-communication link is established until all pairs in the network planning database have been established. It is noted that a given node can be an initiator to multiple other neighboring responder nodes and vice versa, a given node can be a responder to multiple other initiator nodes.

[0102] In summary, the invention is directed to a lighting-and-communication arrangement, comprising a plurality of lighting-and-communication devices and an arrangement control unit, wherein each lighting-and-communication device comprises a lighting device identifiable by lighting-device data and a communication device identifiable by radio-identification data. The lighting device comprises a lighting control unit comprising a location ascertainment unit configured to ascertain location data indicative of a current installation location of the lighting-and-communication device. The arrangement control unit is configured to generate, using the lighting-device identification data, the radio-identification data and the location data, a network planning database indicative of pairs of communication devices suitable for establishing a radio-communication link between them, according to a selection algorithm. Using the network planning database, commissioning data is generated and provided for establishing the radio-communication links between the pairs of communication devices.
