[0001] Cross-citation with related application(s)
[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0120507, filed September 11, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0003] The present invention relates to a battery pack and a device including the same, and more specifically, to a battery pack in which battery cells can be easily separated and a device including the same.
[0004] In modern society, the widespread use of portable devices like cell phones, laptops, camcorders, and digital cameras has fueled active development of technologies related to these devices. Furthermore, rechargeable secondary batteries are increasingly being used as power sources for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs) to address air pollution caused by conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. This, in turn, heightens the need for further development of these batteries.
[0005] Currently commercialized secondary batteries include nickel cadmium batteries, nickel hydrogen batteries, nickel zinc batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Among these, lithium secondary batteries are receiving attention for their advantages of being able to charge and discharge freely, having a very low self-discharge rate, and having a high energy density, as they have almost no memory effect compared to nickel-based secondary batteries.
[0006] These lithium secondary batteries primarily use lithium oxide and carbon materials as the positive and negative electrode active materials, respectively. The lithium secondary battery comprises an electrode assembly comprising a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate, each coated with the positive and negative electrode active materials, with a separator interposed between them, and a battery case that seals and houses the electrode assembly together with an electrolyte.
[0007] In general, lithium secondary batteries can be classified into can-type secondary batteries in which the electrode assembly is built into a metal can and pouch-type secondary batteries in which the electrode assembly is built into a pouch of an aluminum laminate sheet, depending on the shape of the outer packaging material.
[0008] Secondary batteries used in small devices are configured with 2-3 battery cells, but secondary batteries used in medium- to large-sized devices such as automobiles utilize battery modules in which multiple battery cells are electrically connected. These battery modules enhance capacity and output by forming a battery cell stack by connecting multiple battery cells in series or parallel. In addition, one or more battery modules may be mounted together with various control and protection systems, such as a Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU), a Battery Management System (BMS), and a cooling system, to form a battery pack.
[0009] When constructing a battery pack, a common method is to first house battery cells in a module frame to form a battery module, and then use this battery module to add other components. Conventional battery packs are manufactured by placing battery modules in a housing structure, such as a pack frame, and then installing these battery packs in vehicles and other vehicles.
[0010] However, recently, a battery pack has been developed that omits the module frame configuration and mounts multiple battery cells directly on the pack frame, positioned between side plates.
[0011] Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section of a conventional battery pack.
[0012] Referring to Fig. 1, conventionally, a plurality of battery cells (11) are stacked to form a battery cell stack (12), and side plates (20) are arranged on each side of the battery cell stack (12) in the direction in which the battery cells (11) are stacked. The side plates (20) can be connected through a connecting member (30).
[0013] This battery cell stack (12) can be directly mounted on the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100), and a thermal resin layer (50) formed by applying thermal resin can be positioned between the battery cell stack (12) and the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100). Specifically, the thermal resin layer (50) can be formed by applying thermal resin on the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100), and the battery cell stack (12) can be placed on the thermal resin layer (50).
[0014] The thermal resin may include a thermally conductive adhesive material, and specifically, may include at least one of silicone, urethane, or acrylic. This thermal resin layer (50) has excellent thermal conductivity and can quickly discharge heat generated from the battery cell (11) to the outside. In addition, the thermal resin layer (50) may be in a liquid state when applied or may be hardened after application to fix a plurality of battery cells (11) constituting the battery cell stack (12).
[0015] However, in the case of conventional battery packs, there is a problem that the reliability of the bonding of the battery cells (11) to the pack frame (1100) is not constant when subjected to impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in the battery cells (11) and replacement is required, it is difficult to replace the battery cells (11) because the battery cells (11) are adhered to the thermal resin layer (50). In particular, if the battery cells (11) are forcibly replaced, the battery cells (11) may be damaged due to the adhesive force of the thermal resin layer (50).
[0016] Accordingly, there is a need for technology development for battery packs that can increase the reliability of battery cell bonding and enable easy replacement of battery cells when necessary.
[0017] The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a battery pack and a device including the same, in which the battery cells have excellent bonding reliability when subjected to shock or vibration, and the battery cells can be easily replaced when necessary.
[0018] However, the problems to be solved by the embodiments of the present invention are not limited to the problems described above and can be expanded in various ways within the scope of the technical ideas included in the present invention.
[0019] A battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a battery cell stack in which a plurality of battery cells are stacked along one direction; a pack frame for accommodating the battery cell stack; and a thermal resin plate positioned between the battery cell stack and a bottom portion of the pack frame. A thermal resin layer formed by applying thermal resin to one surface of the thermal resin plate is positioned, and the battery cell stack is fixed to the thermal resin layer. The thermal resin plate is detachably coupled to the pack frame.
[0020] The above battery cells may be in the shape of sheets having a certain thickness, and the battery cells may be arranged perpendicular to one surface of the bottom portion of the pack frame.
[0021] The direction in which the above battery cells are stacked may be parallel to one surface of the bottom portion of the pack frame.
[0022] The above thermal resin plate can be connected to the pack frame using bolts and nuts.
[0023] A bolt can be joined to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate, a hole can be formed in the bottom portion of the pack frame, and the bolt can pass through the hole and be fastened with a nut.
[0024] The above bolt may be welded to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate.
[0025] A cooling path through which a refrigerant flows can be formed inside the bottom portion of the pack frame, and the bolt and the hole in the bottom portion can be positioned to avoid the cooling path.
[0026] An indented portion having a shape corresponding to the lower portion of the battery cell may be formed on the above surface of the above thermal resin plate.
[0027] The above-mentioned indentation portion may be composed of a plurality of indentations, and the plurality of indentations may be positioned in one-to-one correspondence with each of the battery cells.
[0028] The above battery cell can be mounted in the indentation.
[0029] A cooling path through which a refrigerant flows can be formed inside the bottom portion of the above pack frame.
[0030] A device according to one embodiment of the present invention includes the battery pack.
[0031] According to embodiments of the present invention, since the battery cells are positioned on a thermal resin layer on a thermal resin plate and the thermal resin plate is detachably coupled to a pack frame, the battery cells have excellent bonding reliability and can be easily replaced when necessary.
[0032] The effects of the present invention are not limited to the effects mentioned above, and other effects not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description of the claims.

[0040] Hereinafter, various embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement the invention. The present invention may be implemented in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.
[0041] In order to clearly explain the present invention, parts that are not related to the description are omitted, and the same reference numerals are used for identical or similar components throughout the specification.
[0042] Furthermore, the sizes and thicknesses of each component shown in the drawings are arbitrarily indicated for convenience of explanation, and thus the present invention is not necessarily limited to the illustrated components. In the drawings, the thicknesses are enlarged to clearly represent various layers and regions. Furthermore, in the drawings, the thicknesses of some layers and regions are exaggerated for convenience of explanation.
[0043] Furthermore, when we say that a layer, membrane, region, plate, or other part is "on" or "over" another part, this includes not only cases where it is "directly on" the other part, but also cases where there are other parts in between. Conversely, when we say that a part is "directly on" another part, it means that there are no other parts in between. Furthermore, saying that a part is "on" or "over" a reference part means that it is located above or below the reference part, and does not necessarily mean that it is located "above" or "over" the direction opposite to gravity.
[0044] Additionally, throughout the specification, whenever a part is said to "include" a component, this does not mean that it excludes other components, but rather that it may include other components, unless otherwise specifically stated.
[0045] Additionally, throughout the specification, when we say "in plan", we mean when the target portion is viewed from above, and when we say "in cross section", we mean when the target portion is viewed from the side in a cross-section cut vertically.
[0046] Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view showing a battery cell stack, a side plate, a connecting member, and a thermal resin plate according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing one of the battery cells included in the battery cell stack of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention. In particular, Fig. 4 shows a state in which the battery cell stack (120) of Fig. 2 is mounted on a pack frame (1100).
[0047] Referring to FIGS. 2 to 4, a battery pack (1000) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a battery cell stack (120) in which a plurality of battery cells (110) are stacked along one direction; a pack frame (1100) that accommodates the battery cell stack (120); and a thermal resin plate (400) positioned between the battery cell stack (120) and the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100).
[0048] The battery cell (110) according to the present embodiment is in the shape of a sheet having a certain thickness, and the battery cells (110) can be arranged to be perpendicular to one surface of the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100). For example, the battery cell (110) can be a pouch-type battery in which an electrode assembly having electrode leads (111) protruding in one or both directions is housed in a pouch case (114). However, this is only one example, and the battery cell according to another embodiment of the present invention can be a square battery cell.
[0049] For convenience of explanation, the following description will be based on a battery cell (110), which is a pouch-type battery.
[0050] The battery cell (110) may be in the shape of a rectangular sheet. The battery cell (110) may be formed by housing an electrode assembly in a pouch case (114) of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and a metal layer, and then bonding the outer periphery of the pouch case (114). For example, the battery cell (110) may have a structure in which two electrode leads (111) face each other and protrude from one end (114a) and the other end (114b) of the cell body (113). As another embodiment, a structure in which all of the electrode leads (111) of the battery cell (110) protrude in one direction is also possible. One of the electrode leads (111) is a positive electrode lead, and the other is a negative electrode lead.
[0051] The battery cell (110) can be manufactured by bonding the two ends (114a, 114b) of the pouch case (114) and one side (114c) connecting them while the electrode assembly (not shown) is stored in the pouch case (114). In other words, the battery cell (110) according to one embodiment of the present invention has a total of three sealing portions (114s), and the sealing portions (114s) have a structure in which they are sealed by a method such as fusion, and the remaining other side portion can be formed as a folding portion (115). That is, the battery cell (110) according to this embodiment has a sealing portion (114s) formed by sealing the outer periphery of the portion where the electrode assembly is stored, in which the electrode assembly is stored inside the pouch case (114). In Fig. 3, only the sealing portions (114s) formed on both ends (114a, 114b) of the pouch case (114) are shown, and the sealing portion is not shown on the upper side facing the folding portion (115), i.e., one side (114c). However, the sealing portion of one side (114c) is folded to one side after sealing is completed for space utilization. The one side (114c) in the folded state is also shown in Fig. 5 described below.
[0052] The pouch case (114) of the laminate sheet may include an inner resin layer for sealing, a metal layer for preventing penetration of materials, and an outermost outer resin layer. Based on the electrode assembly inside the pouch case (114), the inner resin layer may be positioned at the innermost side, the outer resin layer may be positioned at the outermost side, and the metal layer may be positioned between the inner resin layer and the outer resin layer.
[0053] The outer resin layer may have excellent tensile strength and weather resistance relative to its thickness and may exhibit electrical insulation properties to protect the electrode assembly from the outside. The outer resin layer may include polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin or nylon resin. The metal layer may prevent air, moisture, etc. from entering the pouch-type secondary battery. The metal layer may include aluminum (Al). The inner resin layers may be thermally bonded to each other by heat and / or pressure applied while the electrode assembly is embedded. The inner resin layer may include cast polypropylene (CPP) or polypropylene (PP).
[0054] A pouch case (114) may be divided into two parts, and a concave receiving portion in which an electrode assembly can be mounted may be formed in at least one of the two parts. Along the outer periphery of the receiving portion, the inner resin layers of the two parts of the pouch case (114) may be bonded to each other to form a sealing portion (114s). In this manner, the pouch case (114) may be sealed, and a battery cell (110), which is a pouch-type battery, may be manufactured.
[0055] The battery cell (110) is composed of a plurality of cells, and the plurality of battery cells (110) are stacked so as to be electrically connected to each other to form a battery cell stack (120). In particular, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the plurality of battery cells (110) can be stacked along a direction parallel to the y-axis while standing upright so that one side of the cell body (113, see FIG. 3) faces the other.
[0056] That is, the battery cells (110) may be arranged to be perpendicular to one side of the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100). In addition, one direction in which the battery cells (110) are stacked may be parallel to one side of the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100). The electrode leads (111) may protrude in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the battery cells (110) are stacked. That is, in the battery cell (110), one electrode lead (111) may protrude toward the x-axis direction, and the other electrode lead (111) may protrude toward the -x-axis direction. If the battery cell has electrode leads (111) protruding only in one direction, the electrode leads (111) protrude in the x-axis direction or the -x-axis direction.
[0057] Meanwhile, the battery cell stack (120) may be provided with a minimized separate frame protecting the outer surfaces of the battery cells (110). That is, the battery cell stack (120) of the present embodiment may have a cell-to-pack structure. Here, the cell-to-pack structure may refer to a module-less structure in which the battery cell structure is directly connected to the battery pack structure without a module frame.
[0058] Typically, conventional battery packs (1000) have a dual assembly structure in which a plurality of battery cells and various components connected thereto are assembled to form a battery module, and the plurality of battery modules are then accommodated in the battery pack (1000). In this case, since the battery module includes a module frame forming its outer surface, the conventional battery cells are doubly protected by the module frame of the battery module and the pack frame (1100) of the battery pack (1000). However, this dual assembly structure not only increases the manufacturing cost and manufacturing process of the battery pack (1000), but also has the disadvantage of poor reassembly performance when a defect occurs in some battery cells. In addition, when a cooling member, etc., is present on the outside of the battery module, there is a problem in that the heat transfer path between the battery cells and the cooling member becomes somewhat complicated.
[0059] Accordingly, in the present embodiment, the unit module mounted on the battery pack (1000) may be provided in the form of a 'battery cell stack' with the module frame omitted. Through this, the structure of the battery pack (1000) may be simplified, advantages in manufacturing cost and manufacturing process may be obtained, and the effect of achieving a reduction in the weight of the battery pack (1000) may be achieved.
[0060] The battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment may include side plates (200) arranged on each side of the battery cell stack (120) in the direction in which the battery cells (110) are stacked. In addition, the battery pack (1000) may further include a connecting member (300) connecting the side plates (200).
[0061] The side plates (200) are positioned on both sides of the battery cell stack (120) so as to support the battery cell stack (120). More specifically, they can be positioned on both sides in the direction in which a plurality of battery cells (110) are stacked, i.e., in the direction parallel to the y-axis in FIG. 2.
[0062] The connecting member (300) may be a band member that connects the side plates (200) on the upper side of the battery cell stack (120). The connecting member (300), which is a band member, may include an elastic metal material and may be provided one or more. In the case of a plurality of connecting members (300), they may be positioned spaced apart from each other at a certain interval. As an example, FIGS. 2 and 4 illustrate three connecting members (300) being provided on the upper side of the battery cell stack (120). However, such connecting members (300) are an exemplary structure and are not necessarily provided in the battery pack (1000). That is, in another embodiment of the present invention, only the side plates (200) may be provided on both sides of the battery cell stack (120) without the connecting members.
[0063] In this embodiment, the battery cell stack (120) may not be housed and sealed in a module frame, but may have a configuration in which side plates (200) are placed on both sides of the battery cell stack (120) and the side plates (200) are fixed through connecting members (300). That is, compared to a conventional battery module, the module frame is omitted, and can be directly mounted on a battery pack without a sealed module frame.
[0064]
[0065] Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section taken along the cutting line A-A' of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a partial drawing showing an enlarged view of part “B” of Fig. 5. In particular, Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a portion of a thermal resin plate (400) where a bolt (600) is provided.
[0066] Referring to FIGS. 2, 4, 5, and 5, when the battery cell stack (120) is mounted on the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100), the thermal resin plate (400) according to the present embodiment is located between the battery cell stack (120) and the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100).
[0067] The pack frame (1100) may be a box-shaped structure with an open top that accommodates the battery cell stack (120). A pack cover (not shown) may be positioned on the open top of the pack frame (1100). In addition, at least one vertical beam (1200) may be positioned on the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100) to fix the position of the battery cell stack (120).
[0068] A thermal resin layer (500) formed by applying thermal resin to one surface of a thermal resin plate (400) is positioned, and the battery cell stack (120) is fixed to the thermal resin layer (500).
[0069] The thermal resin may include a thermally conductive adhesive material, and specifically, may include at least one of a silicone material, a urethane material, and an acrylic material. This thermal resin layer (500) has excellent thermal conductivity properties and can quickly discharge heat generated from the battery cell (11) to the outside. In addition, since the thermal resin layer (500) has adhesive properties, it can fix a plurality of battery cells (11) constituting the battery cell stack (120).
[0070] The thermal resin plate (400) according to the present embodiment is detachably coupled to the pack frame (1100). The thermal resin plate (400) may be in the form of a plate having a predetermined thickness, and may be a plastic member, a metal member, or an insulating-coated metal member. For example, the thermal resin plate (400) and the pack frame (1100) may be coupled by a mechanical fastening method.
[0071] The conventional battery pack illustrated in Fig. 1 has a structure in which the battery cells (11) are directly bonded to the bottom (1100F) of the pack frame (1100) through a thermal resin layer (50), so there is a problem in that the reliability of the bonding of the battery cells (11) to the pack frame (1100) is not constant when subjected to impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in the battery cells (11) and replacement is required, it is difficult to replace the battery cells (11) because the battery cells (11) are bonded to the thermal resin layer (50). In particular, if the battery cells (11) are forcibly replaced, the battery cells (11) may be damaged due to the adhesive force of the thermal resin layer (50).
[0072] On the other hand, in the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment, the battery cell stack (120) is bonded to the thermal resin plate (400) through the thermal resin layer (500), and the thermal resin plate (400) is detachably coupled to the bottom (1100F) of the pack frame (1100). Therefore, since the thermal resin plate (400) is coupled to the pack frame (1100), the reliability of the bonding of the battery cells (110) to the pack frame (1100) can be maintained even when subjected to impact or vibration. In addition, when a problem occurs in some of the battery cells (110) and requires replacement, the battery cell stack (120) including the defective battery cells (110) can be easily separated and replaced with another by separating the thermal resin plate (400) from the pack frame (1100). That is, the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment has the advantage that there is no particular difficulty in replacing the battery cells (110).
[0073]
[0074] Below, an example of a combined form of a thermal resin plate (400) and a pack frame (1100) will be described.
[0075] A thermal resin plate (400) according to one embodiment of the present invention can be coupled to a pack frame (1100) by a fastening method of a bolt (600) and a nut (700). The bolt (600) can be joined to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate (400). For example, the bolt (600) can be welded to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate (400). A hole (1100H) can be formed in the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100), and the bolt (600) can pass through the hole (1100H) of the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100) and be fastened to the nut (700).
[0076] As long as the thermal resin plate (400) can be firmly fixed to the pack frame (1100), there is no special limitation on the size or number of bolts (600) attached to the lower surface of the thermal resin plate (400).
[0077] The thermal resin plate (400) can be coupled to the pack frame (1100) in such a way that the bolt (600) passes through the hole (1100H) of the bottom part (1100F) of the pack frame (1100) and is fastened with the nut (700). Thereafter, thermal resin can be applied to one surface of the thermal resin plate (400) to form a thermal resin layer (500), and the battery cells (110) can be mounted on the thermal resin layer (500). If a problem occurs in the battery cell (110) and replacement is required, the battery cell (110) and the thermal resin plate (400) can be simply separated from the pack frame (1100) by releasing the coupling of the bolt (600) and the nut (700).
[0078] Meanwhile, a recessed portion (400D) having a recessed shape corresponding to the lower portion of the battery cell (110) may be formed on one surface of the thermal resin plate (400). The recessed portion (400D) may be formed in multiple numbers, and the multiple recessed portions (400D) may be positioned in one-to-one correspondence with each of the battery cells (110) in the battery cell stack (120). Each battery cell (110) may be mounted on the recessed portion (400D). Specifically, each battery cell (110) may be attached to the thermal resin layer (500) on the recessed portion (400D).
[0079] As described above in FIG. 3, the battery cell (110) has a side portion (114c) and a folding portion (115), and the sealing portion of the side portion (114c) in the folded state may be positioned so that the sealing portion faces upward and the folding portion (115) faces downward. The indentation portion (400D) of the thermal resin plate (400) according to the present embodiment may have a recessed shape corresponding to the shape of the folding portion (115) of the battery cell (110). By forming the indentation portion (400D) in the thermal resin plate (400), the battery cells (110) can be more strongly attached to the thermal resin layer (500). This indentation portion (400D) may be provided by a forging process for the thermal resin plate (400).
[0080] Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross-section taken along the cutting line C-C' of Fig. 4. In particular, Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view showing a portion where a cooling passage (1100C) is formed in the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100).
[0081] Referring to FIGS. 4, 5, and 7 together, a cooling conduit (1100C) may be formed inside the bottom portion (1100F) of the pack frame (1100) according to the present embodiment. A coolant (C, Coolant) for cooling the battery cell stack (120) may flow through the cooling conduit (1100C). The coolant may be, for example, cooling water. The battery pack according to the present embodiment may have a water-cooling structure. Heat generated in the battery cell (110) may be discharged to the outside through the cooling conduit (1100C) of the bottom portion (1100F) through the thermal resin layer (500) and the thermal resin plate (400).
[0082] There is no special limitation on the width, number, area, etc. of the cooling conduit (1100C) as long as effective cooling of the battery cell stack (120) is possible. However, it is preferable that the cooling conduit (1100C) be provided in a location that does not interfere with the bolt (600) and the hole (1100H) of the bottom portion (1100F) described above. Specifically, the bolt (600) and the hole (1100H) of the bottom portion (1100F) according to the present embodiment may be positioned to avoid the cooling conduit (1100C). That is, the hole (1100H) of the bottom portion (1100F) may be formed in a portion of the bottom portion (1100F) through which the cooling conduit (1100C) does not pass. More specifically, when looking at the bottom portion (1100F) along a direction perpendicular to one surface of the bottom portion (1100F), the bolt (600) and the hole (1100H) of the bottom portion (1100F) may be located in a portion where the cooling passage (1100C) is not formed. Here, the direction perpendicular to one surface of the bottom portion (1100F) may be a direction parallel to the z-axis in the drawing. Since the bolt (600) passes through this hole (1100H), the bolt (600) can be located while avoiding the cooling passage (1100C).
[0083] Meanwhile, in the battery cell stack (120) according to the present embodiment, a compression pad (800) may be interposed between at least one of the battery cells (110). The compression pad (800) is an elastic member that can absorb swelling of the battery cells (110).
[0084] In this example, terms indicating directions such as front, back, left, right, up, and down are used, but these terms are only for convenience of explanation and may vary depending on the location of the target object or the location of the observer.
[0085] The battery cell stack according to the embodiment described above can be mounted together with various control and protection systems such as a BMS (Battery Management System), a BDU (Battery Disconnect Unit), and a cooling system to form a battery pack.
[0086] The above battery pack can be applied to various devices. Specifically, it can be applied to transportation vehicles such as electric bicycles, electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles, as well as ESS (Energy Storage Systems), but is not limited thereto. It can also be applied to various devices that can use secondary batteries.
[0087] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements made by those skilled in the art using the basic concept of the present invention defined in the following claims also fall within the scope of the present invention.
