[0035]

[0036] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

[0037]

[0038] [First embodiment]

[0039] FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a battery pack according to some embodiments.

[0040] Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the cutting line 1A-1A' of Figure 1.

[0041] Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the cutting line 1B-1B' of Figure 1.

[0042] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a battery pack (100) may include a base plate (110), a plurality of side walls (120A, 120B, 130A, 130B), a plurality of battery devices (140), a first bulkhead (150), a plurality of second bulkheads (160), an electrical component bulkhead (170), and a lid (180). The battery pack (100) may be the final form of a battery system mounted on a mobility device, etc.

[0043] Hereinafter, two directions substantially parallel to the upper surface (110T) of the base plate (110) are defined as the X direction and the Y direction, respectively, and the direction substantially perpendicular to the upper surface (110T) of the base plate (110) is defined as the Z direction. The X direction, the Y direction, and the Z direction may be substantially perpendicular to each other.

[0044] The base plate (110) can support a plurality of side walls (120A, 120B, 130A, 130B), a plurality of battery devices (140), a first bulkhead (150), a plurality of second bulkheads (160), and an electrical component bulkhead (170).

[0045] In some embodiments, the base plate (110) may include at least one hollow (111). The hollow (111) may be exposed to the outside of the base plate (110). The hollow (111) may extend in the X direction from the side surface of the base plate (110). The extending direction of the hollow (111) may be substantially perpendicular to the Y direction. As a non-limiting example, the shape of the hollow (111) may be a rounded square column, a square column, a circular column, an elliptical column, etc. The base plate (110) may include two or more hollows (111). The plurality of hollows (111) may be substantially parallel to each other. The shapes of each of the plurality of hollows (111) may be different from each other. The plurality of hollows (111) may all have the same shape. The volumes of each of the plurality of hollows (111) may be different from each other.

[0046] In some embodiments, the base plate (110) may be manufactured by an extrusion process. As a non-limiting example, the extrusion process may be a direct extrusion process or an indirect extrusion process. As a non-limiting example, the material of the base plate (110) may be aluminum or an alloy including aluminum. The hollow portion (111) of the above-described base plate (110) may be formed by an extrusion process.

[0047] In some embodiments, the base plate (110) may be seamless. The base plate (110) may be seamless as it is manufactured by the extrusion process described above. In the present specification, "seamless" may mean that there is no joint or contact line in the hollow portion (111) of the base plate (110).

[0048] In this specification, “superabsorbent resin” means a resin capable of absorbing 100 to 3000 times its own weight of coolant.

[0049] In some embodiments, the base plate (110) may include a superabsorbent polymer (112) that absorbs a coolant. In some embodiments, the superabsorbent polymer (112) that absorbs a coolant may be disposed in at least one hollow space (111) of the base plate (110). The superabsorbent polymer (112) that absorbs a coolant may be disposed in at least one of a plurality of hollow spaces (111) of the base plate (110). The volume of the superabsorbent polymer (112) that absorbs a coolant may be substantially the same as the volume of the hollow space (111). The volume of the superabsorbent polymer (112) that absorbs a coolant may be smaller than the volume of the hollow space (111).

[0050] In some embodiments, the coolant may be water.

[0051] In some embodiments, the superabsorbent polymer (112) may be one or more selected from the group consisting of polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, polysaccharide, chitosan, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose.

[0052] Since the superabsorbent polymer (112) absorbing the coolant is included in the base plate, even if a thermal runaway event occurs in the battery device (140) described below, the coolant can delay or prevent the thermal runaway event from spreading to an adjacent battery device (140) by absorbing heat. The coolant can absorb heat and vaporize, and the coolant in a gaseous state can escape to the outside. Meanwhile, in a situation where a thermal runaway event does not occur in the battery device (140), the superabsorbent polymer (112) absorbing the coolant can function as an insulator.

[0053] Here, a thermal runaway event is a positive feedback loop in which temperature changes in multiple battery devices (140) further accelerate the temperature change. If a thermal runaway event occurs in multiple battery devices (140), the temperature rapidly increases, and a large amount of dust, gas, and flames may be emitted.

[0054] As a non-limiting example, the base plate (110) may include a cooling conduit (not shown). Since the cooling conduit is included in the base plate (110), even if a thermal runaway event occurs in the battery device (140), the coolant flowing in the cooling conduit can absorb the heat and prevent the thermal runaway event from spreading to adjacent battery devices (140).

[0055] A plurality of side walls (120A, 120B, 130A, 130B) may extend in the Z direction from the upper surface (110T) of the base plate. For convenience of description below, the side walls (120A) and (120B) extending in the X direction are referred to as first side walls (120A, 120B), and the side walls (130A) and (130B) extending in the Y direction are referred to as second side walls (130A, 130B). The first side walls (120A, 120B) and the second side walls (130A, 130B) may protect the plurality of battery devices (140), the first bulkhead (150), the plurality of second bulkheads (160), and the electrical component bulkhead (170).

[0056] The first side walls (120A, 120B) may be substantially parallel to the X direction and substantially perpendicular to the Y direction. The extending direction of the hollow (121A) may be substantially perpendicular to the Y direction. As a non-limiting example, the shape of the hollow (121A) may be a rounded square column, a square column, a circular column, or an elliptical column. The first side wall (120A) may include two or more hollows (121A). The plurality of hollows (121A) may be substantially parallel to each other. The shapes of each of the plurality of hollows (121A) may be different from each other. The plurality of hollows (121A) may all have the same shape. The volumes of each of the plurality of hollows (121A) may be different from each other. In some embodiments, the first side wall (120B) may include at least one hollow (121B). Since the hollow (121B) may be substantially the same as the hollow (121A), a redundant description thereof will be omitted.

The second side wall (130A) may include a separate hollow (not shown) that is in communication with the hollow (131A) and exposed to the exterior of the second side wall (130A). Accordingly, the hollow (131A) may be exposed to the exterior of the second side wall (130A). The hollow (131A) may extend in the Y direction from the side surface of the second side wall (130A). The extending direction of the hollow (131A) may be substantially perpendicular to the X direction. As a non-limiting example, the shape of the hollow (131A) may be a rounded square column, a square column, a circular column, or an elliptical column.
