Description

[0001] PROCESS AND SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING PAYMENT SERVICES FOR PURCHASES MADE BY

[0002] INTERNET

[0003] “Certificate of Addition of Invention of Invention Patent Application BR 10 2022 022772 1, filed on September 18, 2023”

[0004] Field of Invention

[0005]

[0001] This report of Certificate of Addition to Invention Patent Application BR 10 2022 022772 1 refers to a new process and system for implementing a PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDER, in which the buyer will use his physical card by bringing it close to his smartphone when prompted to do so by the system's application, previously loaded and installed on it, and then entering his password for purchases with the respective card. By adopting this process, the information on the credit or debit cards used to pay for purchases will never be exposed on the Internet.

[0006]

[0002] For ease of reference, the process and system that are the subject of this Certificate of Addition will be referred to as NEW PROCESS and NEW SYSTEM respectively, and the BUYER will be referred to simply as BUYER.

[0007] History of the Invention

[0008]

[0003] The process in question brings some of the principles applied in the BR 10 2022 022772 1 application, which uses the buyer's SMARTPHONE and credit or debit card to authenticate ownership, expanding its scope to transform it into a PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDER.

[0009]

[0004] In this Certificate of Addition, it is proposed that the confirmation server, described in application BR 10 2022 022772 1 , be replaced by a payment services server, which will make use of three control databases: i-) Database for registering e-Commerce sites that opt for the service; ii-) Database for registering buyers who have their data registered in the system, namely their SMARTPHONE number, their CPF and their e-mail; and iii-) Database for registering processed transactions.

[0010]

[0005] The proposed service will utilize up to five conditions that will be authenticated so that the purchase can be completed in a very simple and practical manner. Since card information will no longer be transmitted over the Internet, this eliminates the main source of potential fraud involving the misuse of copies of card numbers in e-commerce purchasing processes, obtained from the "DARK WEB," often fueled by sensitive data and information leaked online.

[0011]

[0006] Therefore, in order to allow better clarification of the object in question, its description will be carried out with reference to the following figures, where: figure 1 illustrates the flowchart of the e-commerce website registration process on the proposed system platform; figure 2 illustrates the screen that presents a new payment method available at the time of completing the purchase; figure 3 illustrates the flowchart of the application installation process on the purchasing user's smartphone; figure 4 illustrates the flowchart of the application activation process on the purchasing user's smartphone; figure 5 illustrates the flowchart of the purchase approval process by the user via smartphone; figure 6 illustrates the topology and service architecture proposed for the NEW SYSTEM; figure 7 illustrates the architecture of the central system for executing and controlling the functions made available by the NEW SYSTEM; figure 8 illustrates trend information disclosed by Glenbrook Partners LLC;Figure 9 illustrates historical information disclosed by Glenbrook Partners LLC.;

[0012] Description of the Invention

[0013]

[0007] The NEW PROCESS is constituted from the negotiation between the manager of the NEW SYSTEM provider and the manager of the e-Commerce site where, once the contracting of the service has been decided, the manager of the provider will make the initial registration of the e-Commerce site in the NEW SYSTEM and will provide an ID code to the Manager of the e-Commerce site to complete its registration, as illustrated in Figure 1.

[0008] After the registration of the e-Commerce site in the NEW SYSTEM, its checkout procedure for completing the purchase will start to offer an additional payment alternative through the NEW SYSTEM, as illustrated in Figure 2.

[0014]

[0009] When the BUYER chooses to use the NEW SYSTEM for payment, it will automatically start the procedures for preparing and activating the NEW SYSTEM APPLICATION on the BUYER'S SMARTPHONE, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4.

[0015]

[0010] Next, automatically, the NEW SYSTEM will follow the procedure for approving the desired purchase using the BUYER's own smartphone, waiting for the credit or debit card to be detected via NFC by the buyer's smartphone and, then, the respective card purchase authorization password to be entered via the virtual keyboard displayed on the SMARTPHONE screen, whenever it is required by the parameters contained in the card chip, thus making the online purchase in person by the BUYER himself with his own smartphone, as illustrated in Figure 5.

[0016]

[0011] The NEW PROCESS will be completed with the response from the Card Issuing Bank, following the finalization procedure that will communicate to the e-Commerce site and the BUYER the result, both of approval and denial of the desired purchase.

[0017]

[0012] THE NEW SYSTEM will have three basic components, namely:

[0018] 1 - A payment services server;

[0019] 2- An API (Application Programming Interface) that will be made available to be installed on the e-Commerce website, and

[0020] 3- An application to be installed on the BUYER's smartphone.

[0021]

[0013] Figure 6 illustrates the topology and architecture of a possible implementation for the NEW SYSTEM using credit or debit cards for online purchases, detailing its aforementioned components:

[0022] (1) BUYER user interested in online purchasing who accesses the e-Commerce website via a PC or SMARTPHONE.

[0023] (2) After the search procedure on the e-commerce website, when the BUYER user chooses the object or service he wishes to purchase, his choice is recorded as required by the website, and then fills in his name, delivery address, SMARTPHONE number, CPF, and chooses the NEW PAYMENT SERVICE as the payment method, which is the subject of this patent application, clicking on its symbol that will appear next to the payment alternatives already offered by the website, then completing the purchase, according to a possible configuration of this as illustrated in Figure 2.

[0024] (3) API(3) made available by the NEW SYSTEM and installed on the e-Commerce website, which: a-) Offers the user this new payment alternative for their purchase by allowing them to click on the NEW PAYMENT SERVICE symbol. Upon receiving the buyer's click, the API(3) sends a message to the NEW SYSTEM server (8) containing:

[0025] (i) A transaction identification number composed of the e-Commerce website identification code; the date and the sequential number of the transaction on that day;

[0026] (ii) The SMARTPHONE number, CPF, buyer's email, and name;

[0027] (iii) A descriptive summary of the purchase and its amount, plus the desired number of payment installments for the transaction using the credit card that will be used by the buyer when tapping their SMARTPHONE. b) Note: the bank account of the e-Commerce site that will receive the credit for the amount paid by the buyer will have already been informed to the NEW SYSTEM during its registration process. c) Upon receiving the message from API (3), the NEW SYSTEM server (8) will check whether the buyer is already registered in the system and will send a response to the API (3) already installed on the e-Commerce site, which will have different execution processes depending on whether the buyer is already registered or not. d) Upon receiving this response, the API (3) will take different actions according to the information it receives;

[0028] A. If the BUYER'S SMARTPHONE number is already registered on the NEW SYSTEM Server (8), it may take two different paths: i. If the buyer is accessing the website via his / her SMARTPHONE, the API (3) will send a message to the SMARTPHONE which, when received by the browser running on it, will automatically launch the App (5) already installed on it, which in turn will connect to the NEW SYSTEM server to receive the information on the purchase to be approved and will continue the approval process using the SMARTPHONE and tapping the card on it.

[0029] If the App(5) is not found on the smartphone, this situation will return an error code to the e-Commerce website, as this means that the smartphone number, or the smartphone device being used to access the website, is different from the one originally registered. ii. If the BUYER is accessing the website through their notebook, the NEW SYSTEM Server(8) will send an SMS to the buyer's smartphone and display a message on their notebook informing them that an SMS has been sent and asking them to open the received SMS and press the content of the received message. By doing this, the BUYER will automatically launch the App(5) already installed on the smartphone, which will then connect to the NEW SYSTEM server to receive the purchase information to be approved and continue the approval process by using the smartphone and tapping the card on it.If the App(5) is not found on the SMARTPHONE device, this situation will return an error code to the e-Commerce website, as this means that the SMARTPHONE number, or the SMARTPHONE device being used to access the website are different from those originally registered.

[0030] B. If the SMARTPHONE number is not yet registered in the NEW SYSTEM Server (8), the API (3) will display, through the Browser, on the notebook or SMARTPHONE, depending on the access method used by the buyer, a form asking the buyer to confirm the SMARTPHONE number provided to the e-Commerce website, as well as their CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry), and their email address, requesting that they authorize their registration in the NEW SYSTEM. The form will also allow the data for registration in the NEW SYSTEM to be filled in at this time, which may be different from the data registered on the website for delivery of the product or service being purchased. Once the registration is authorized, it will be carried out by the API (3) with the NEW SYSTEM Server (8), and then the API (3) will proceed differently if the buyer is using their SMARTPHONE or notebook to access the e-Commerce website: i.If the BUYER is accessing the website through his / her SMARTPHONE, the API(3) will send a message to the SMARTPHONE that, when received by the browser on the SMARTPHONE, will automatically launch the App to access the “Google Play Store”, requesting the installation of the App(5) on the smartphone, which will be completed with the user's action to install it, pressing the install button and authorizing the accesses to the SMARTPHONE required by the App(5). Once the App(5) is installed, it will automatically connect to the Server(8) of the NEW SYSTEM, to complete the registration with the IMEI information of the SMARTPHONE device.

[0031] To verify that the SMARTPHONE number provided by the buyer is the same as the device being used to access the e-Commerce website, the NEW SYSTEM Server (8) will send an SMS to the SMARTPHONE whose number was registered, instructing the buyer to press the message sent with the SMS. When doing so, the App (5) will be activated and in turn will confirm to the “NEW PAYMENT SERVICE” Server (8) that the SMARTPHONE number provided is indeed the same as the SMARTPHONE device being used to access the website.

[0032] The App (5) will then receive the information regarding the purchase to be approved, continuing the approval process using the SMARTPHONE and tapping the card on it. ii. If the buyer is accessing the website through their notebook, the NEW SYSTEM Server (8) will send an SMS to the SMARTPHONE whose number was registered, displaying a message on their notebook informing them that an SMS has been sent and instructing them to open the received SMS and press the content of the received message. Upon doing so, the Google Play access App will automatically launch to download the App (5) onto the BUYER'S SMARTPHONE, requesting that the installation of the App (5) on the SMARTPHONE be completed with the user's action to install it, pressing the install button and authorizing the accesses to the SMARTPHONE required by the App (5). Once the App (5) is installed, it will automatically connect to the NEW SYSTEM Server (8) to complete the registration with the SMARTPHONE's IMEI information.You will then receive the information about the purchase to be approved, continuing the approval process using your SMARTPHONE and touching your card to it. e) The API (3) will exchange messages with the NEW SYSTEM Server (8) receiving information about the progress of the purchase process, and when it is approved, information necessary for controlling and accounting for your receivables and your purchasing customers, through the e-Commerce website.

[0033] (4) HTML messages exchanged between the e-commerce website and the browser installed on the SMARTPHONE or notebook that the BUYER uses to access the website as described in item (3), in the API functionalities (3).

[0034] (5) App(5) that will be installed on the SMARTPHONE as described in item (3), and that will receive a unique identification code assigned by the Server(8) of the NEW SYSTEM, which will associate it with the SMARTPHONE number and your SMARTPHONE device, through its IMEIs, being registered in the SMARTPHONE control Database maintained by it, and inserted in the App(5) itself.

[0035] (6) SMS message sent by the Server (8) of the NEW SYSTEM to the buyer's SMARTPHONE: a) when the buyer is accessing the e-Commerce website through his / her SMARTPHONE and using the NEW SYSTEM for the first time after registering the SMARTPHONE with the Server (8), to confirm that the registered SMARTPHONE number is the same as the SMARTPHONE device used for access. b) when the buyer is accessing the e-Commerce website through his / her notebook: i. and using the NEW SYSTEM for the first time after registering the SMARTPHONE with the Server (8), so that the Server (8) finds the buyer's smartphone and the identification and final installation of the App (5) on the smartphone is completed, as described in item 3) d. Bi ii. and from the second time onwards to allow the Server (8) to find the smartphone from the connection established with it by the App (5), already finally installed on the BUYER'S SMARTPHONE, as described in item 3) dAii

[0036] (7) Example of the sequence to COMPLETE the purchase followed by the BUYER and which is guided by the App(5) when the actions are carried out as illustrated in Figure 5:

[0037] (a) The App(5) displays on the SMARTPHONE screen a message showing a summary of the purchase to be approved and its value, the buyer's name, the date and time of the purchase, and the question “IS THE PURCHASE YOURS?”. It also shows two buttons with the words YES and NO for the BUYER to respond.

[0038] (b) If the BUYER answers YES, the App(5) displays the message on the smartphone screen:

[0039] 'TAP YOUR SMARTPHONE WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD

[0040] AND ENTER YOUR PASSWORD ON THE KEYBOARD THAT WILL APPEAR HERE ON THE SCREEN” and another contactless card reading symbol, which will flash on the screen;

[0041] (c) When the BUYER touches the SMARTPHONE with his card, the App(5) will display a keyboard on the screen for him to enter his card password and confirm it;

[0042] (d) If the password is correct, the App (5) displays a new screen for the buyer with the message “PASSWORD CONFIRMED”;

[0043] (e) If the rules on the card chip do not require a password for the transaction, for example due to its value, the App(5) will display a screen containing only the question CONFIRM? And the alternatives YES or NO for the BUYER to answer;

[0044] (f) Then the App(5) prepares and sends the messages according to the EMV standard to the NEW SYSTEM Server(8), which in turn will forward them to the Acquirer, who will send them to the credit card Brand's website, followed by the Card Issuing Bank, which will verify and approve or deny the intended purchase. During the execution of this process, the App will display the message “PROCESSING” on the smartphone screen; (g) When the response returns to the Acquirer and from there to the NEW SYSTEM Server(8), and then to the SMARTPHONE, the App(5) will display the message “PURCHASE APPROVED” on the smartphone screen;

[0045] (h) If the buyer registers that the purchase is not his by pressing the NO button on the home screen or the Issuing Bank's Response denies authorization of the purchase, the App (5) on the SMARTPHONE and the Server (8) of the NEW SYSTEM will send messages to the e-Commerce website, through the API (3), with the appropriate responses to these situations.

[0046] (8) Server (8) of the NEW PAYMENT SYSTEM that provides the central system for executing and controlling the functions made available by the system, as illustrated in Figure 7, such as: i. Maintaining three databases for: a) Registration and control of e-Commerce sites; b) Registration and control of SMARTPHONE numbers associated with the BUYER's CPF, their name, together with the App identification (5) and identification of the BUYER's smartphone device; c) Registration and control of transactions in process and processed. ii. Exchanging messages with external reference sources to verify a potential risk associated with the SMARTPHONE number informed to be used in the payment process; iii. Interacting with e-commerce sites through the API (3) made available and installed on them, enabling their registration and exchange of messages for the operation of the NEW SYSTEM; iv.Control the flow of messages between the e-commerce website and the BUYER'S SMARTPHONE, as well as between the SMARTPHONE and the Acquirer, which in turn sends and receives messages to the card brand, which in turn establishes the connection with the card-issuing bank; v. Control the response times of each participant in the process, taking appropriate action when these occur outside of an expected pattern; vi. Send messages to the e-commerce website, for each transaction, informing the stage of the payment process; vii. Send the buyer an email or WhatsApp message containing the purchase confirmation immediately after the purchase, according to the buyer's choice; and viii. Send a file to the e-commerce website once per daily cycle containing the transactions occurred that day for its control and reconciliation.

[0047]

[0014] Messages exchanged with the Brand and the Issuing bank, through the Acquirer, will be in the format and encryption required by EMV standards.

[0048]

[0015] The credit card number will at no time be displayed or stored in any stages of the process associated with the NEW PAYMENT SERVICE, traveling encrypted between the card chip and the Issuing Bank, as occurs in standard EMV in-person purchase processes.

[0049]

[0016] THE NEW SYSTEM assumes that the BUYER has a SMARTPHONE with NFC technology and that the chip card is also equipped with NFC technology.

[0050]

[0017] All the multiple initiatives present in the current state of the art, as described in Patent Application BR1020220227721 , arise from a basic paradigm assumed until now in Card Not Present transactions, that it is not possible to physically read the chip of the credit or debit card whose number was provided to the e-commerce website, as well as for the person interested in the purchase to enter a password, in a similar way to what occurs in in-person purchases at POS.

[0051]

[0018] One of the objectives of this Certificate of Addition is to offer e-Commerce sites a new PAYMENT SERVICES PROCESS AND SYSTEM that breaks this paradigm by effectively making it possible to use the face-to-face authentication system with the use of the chip card, carried out by the buyer himself, with his own SMARTPHONE and his chip card, which will never be removed from his possession.

[0052]

[0019] This procedure will also be valid in the event that solutions arise in which the chip is packaged in other objects that can be used by people, such as watches, keychains or other devices capable of connecting via NFC (Near Field Communication) technology with the SMARTPHONE.

[0053]

[0020] With the use of this invention there will no longer be a need, as until now, to provide credit or debit card data to the e-commerce site, thus eliminating the main source of information used for fraud in Internet purchases, as there will no longer be information to be eventually leaked over the Internet to feed the “Dark Web” and thus its large-scale adoption should lead to a sharp decline in the occurrence of these frauds.

[0054]

[0021] This NEW PAYMENT SERVICES SYSTEM proposed by this Certificate of Addition is quite simple and practical (“frictionless”) for those who buy, and should bring benefits to the entire e-Commerce ecosystem.For example, it should increase the confidence of Internet users who are currently wary of purchasing through e-commerce sites, as they will feel safer making their purchases online using their own smartphone and card, knowing that their card number will not be displayed to anyone on the Internet. It should be of great value and benefit to e-commerce sites, significantly reducing their losses due to fraud, without increasing the level of abandonment of potential customers during the purchase process, and allow them to obtain a significant increase in the volume of purchase transactions as the number of Internet users gain confidence in purchasing online increases, bringing economic benefits and improving the quality of life for our entire society. Additionally, it should also potentially reduce the costs of preventing and analyzing potential fraud by e-commerce sites, card brands, and issuing banks.

[0055]

[0022] From the point of view of authentication security, the NEW PAYMENT SERVICES SYSTEM proposed by this Certificate of Addition requires the verification of five conditions to authenticate the purchase transaction, namely:

[0056] 1) The condition that the person has, and is in possession of, their own SMARTPHONE with their own SMARTPHONE number, registered in the new payment system, through which they will read the chip contained in their credit or debit card and enter their access password, if this is required by the reading criteria registered on the card;

[0057] 2) The condition that the person has on their SMARTPHONE an application uniquely identified with the new payment system, uniquely linked to the number and device of their SMARTPHONE;

[0058] 3) The condition that the person is actually in possession of their EMV standard card that will be used for the remote purchase; 4) The condition that the person knows the password to release the use of the chip in their physical card when this is required by the card;

[0059] 5) The condition that the card is valid before the Brand and the Issuing Bank following the same checks and authentications as an in-person purchase using the EMV standard.

[0060]

[0023] Evidence of its novelty and inventiveness regarding transaction authentication based on the use of a card present in online purchases can be seen in the content of the documentation shared by the consulting firm Glenbrook Partners (www.glenbrook.com), globally recognized as one of the most specialized consulting firms in payment methods, in its workshop on "Payment Systems", held in New York on March 28, 29 and 30, 2023. In the stage of the workshop that addressed card payments, the information shared by Glenbrook Partners LLC makes it clear that the current view considers PURCHASES WITH CARD PRESENT and INTERNET PURCHASES WITH CARD NOT PRESENT as two separate worlds. Furthermore, when showing what they are investigating regarding the future, there is no indication as to what is proposed in this Certificate of Addition, as illustrated in Figure 8.In addition, they also shared the tables illustrated in Figure 9, which indicate a historical perspective of the technologies used in card purchases over time and the evolution of fraud over time, according to the Nilson Report of December 2022.

[0061]

[0024] The new purchase process based on card authentication to be performed by the buyer with his / her SMARTPHONE and card, proposed by this Certificate of Addition, is not yet provided for in the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) standards, available at https: / / www.pcisecuritystandards.org / standards / , thus highlighting the novelty and inventiveness of this new process, as shown in Figure 10. The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) is a global forum that brings together payments industry stakeholders to develop and drive the adoption of data security standards and features for secure payments worldwide.

[0062]

[0025] It is important to highlight that the publication of the standard by the PCI Security Standard Council, in its version 1.0 of Nov / 2022, provides for the use of the smartphone to read the buyer's card using NFC technology as well as the typing of the card password on the screen by the buyer, for the situation in which the SMARTPHONE belongs to the seller and is under their supervision, according to the note on page 20 of the publication Payment Card Industry (PCI) - Mobile Payments on COTS, Version 1.01 of February 2023 (https: / / docs-prv.pcisecuritystandards.org / MPoC / Standard / Mobile_Payments_on_COTS-v1-0-1.pdf), a date after patent application BR 10 2022 0227721, filed on 08 / 11 / 2022.

[0063]

[0026] This descriptive report deals with a new “PROCESS AND SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING PAYMENT SERVICES FOR PURCHASES MADE OVER THE INTERNET”, presenting, as can be seen from the description and figures presented, some advantages and differentiated applications in relation to existing conventional authentication or confirmation methods and systems.

[0064]

[0027] Having, therefore, described and illustrated the best embodiment currently contemplated for the realization of this Certificate of Addition, numerous modifications and variations in its embodiment may be readily introduced by technicians and experts in the subject. However, it is understood that the present invention is not limited to the practical aspects illustrated and described in this report, encompassing in its scope all obvious variations and modifications that may not be described, and this process may be applied to numerous other situations in which it may be used with advantages due to the practical and simple way in which it establishes a strong, simple and practical process of authentication and confidentiality of the payment credential, which will never leave the possession of the buyer.

[0028] Due to the advantages it offers and also because it is Novel, has Industrial Application and Inventive Activity, it meets all the requirements and meets the necessary conditions to obtain an Invention Patent.
