Database management system which synchronizes an enterprise server and a workgroup user client using a docking agent

Method of and apparatus for collecting, storing, and retrieving data in a database management system. The database management system has an enterprise server and at least one workgroup user client. The method includes creating a transaction in a local database resident on said workgroup user client, entering the transaction into a transaction log resident on the workgroup user client, and creating a transaction file corresponding to the transaction log in an outbox of the workgroup user client. The workgroup user client transaction log is read, skipping those transactions which originate at the enterprise server, data files are created corresponding to the entries. The data files corresponding to transactions originating at the workgroup user client are read to an inbox on the enterprise server, thus updating the transactions into an enterprise database on the enterprise server.

Hierarchical backup and retrieval system

The invention is a hierarchical backup system. The interconnected network computing devices are put into groups of backup cells. A backup cell has a manager software agent responsible maintaining and initiating a backup regime for the network computing devices in the backup cell. The backups are directed to backup devices within the backup cell. Several backup cells can be defined. A manager software agent for a particular cell may be placed into contact with the manager software agent of another cell, by which information about the cells may be passed back and forth. Additionally, one of the software agents may be given administrative control over another software agent with which it is in communication.

Combined stream auxiliary copy system and method

A system and method for transferring data in a library storage system. The library storage system comprises a management server including a storage policy. A media agent is connected to the management server. A plurality of storage media and a data source are connected to the media agent. The data source is divided into at least a first and a second portion of data. The portions of data are transferred from the data source to a first and second primary storage medium using a first and a second data stream respectively. The media agent then causes the first and second portion of data to be transferred from the first and second storage medium to a third auxiliary storage medium using a third combined data stream. Auxiliary copying is performed in chunks and multiple streams are copied in parallel.

Internet database system

An incrementally-scalable database system and method. The system architecture enables database servers to be scaled by adding resources, such as additional servers, without requiring that the system be taken offline. Such scaling includes both adding one or more computer servers to a given server cluster, which enables an increase in database read transaction throughput, and adding one or more server clusters to the system configuration, which provides for increased read and write transaction throughput. The system also provides for load balancing read transactions across each server cluster, and load balancing write transactions across a plurality of server clusters. The system architecture includes an application server layer including one or more computers on which an application program(s) is running, a database server layer comprising two or more server clusters that each include two or more computer servers with replicated data, and an intermediate "virtual transaction" layer that includes at least two computers that facilitate database transactions with one or more databases operating in the database server layer. Data in the database(s) are evenly distributed across the server clusters in fragmented mutually exclusive subsets of data based on a hashing function. An application program interface is provided so as to enable application programs to perform a full range of database transactions without regard for where data is stored, or what database(s) is operating in the database server layer.

System and methods for mapping and searching objects in multidimensional space

This invention relates to a system and methods for determining the placement of an object in a distributed key-value store by mapping the object to nodes in multidimensional hyperspace. A search function supports efficient object retrieval, even when the search query requests multiple objects and specifies them through non-primary keys. In response to a search query, the search is translated into hyperregions in the hyperspace to determine the set of nodes that hold the queried data object. The number of contacted nodes and the number of scanned objects are significantly reduced in comparison to prior art techniques.

Bidirectional database replication scheme for controlling ping-ponging

Transaction ping-pong is selectively prevented in a bidirectional database replication system. The system has a plurality of nodes connected via communication media in a topology. Each node includes a database and a transaction transmitter or collector which sends transactions posted to the database to a database at one or more other nodes for replication in the databases of the one or more other nodes. All transactions to be posted to databases in remote nodes that were sent by a local node are detected, and the database at the local node is inhibited from posting selective transactions which were detected as being originally sent by the local node.

Systems and methods for managing replicated database data

Systems and methods for replicating database data and generating read-only copies of the replicated data in a clean shutdown state. For example, systems can include a tracking module (e.g., a filter driver) that monitors transactions from a database application to a source storage device to generate log entries having at least one marker indicating a known good state of the application. The systems further include a computer coupled to a target storage device comprising a database and log files. The computer processes the transactions, based on the log entries, to replicate data to the target storage device; performs a first snapshot on data stored in the database and log files; replays into the database data stored in the log files; performs another snapshot on the database; and reverts the database back to a state in which the database existed at the time of the first snapshot.

Tracking, recording and organizing changes to data in computer systems

A change tracing system detects and records changes made to data items by processes in a computer system. Processes and changes are organized as change sessions in a change history database and tagged with user-provided reasons and other identification fields. A query module provides detailed access to change history and selection of specific changes and items in order to analyze effects of changes, diagnose problems caused by changes, compare changes and change history, rollback from changes to previous item contents or package sets of changes to be repeated. Linkage between data items is recorded in order to document the impact of changes affecting dependent data items. Alerts and copies of change sessions may be transmitted automatically to designated users. Communication between change tracing systems running on networked computers detects and records remotely caused changes on the system where the data item resides as well as the system originating the change.

System and method for performing replication copy storage operations

A system and method are provided for performing storage operations relating to a first secondary copy of electronic data. A storage policy or storage preferences may dictate that a replication copy should be used in storage operations performed to a particular client, sub-client, data, media or other item. Based on the storage policy, when a new client, sub-client, data, media or other item is received, a media agent determines whether there is a replication copy of the item. In the absence of a replication copy, one may be created. The replication copy may be provided by a third party application, or created by the client or a storage management system component. Information regarding the replication copy and its corresponding first secondary copy may be stored in a database. To optimize use of system resources, storage operations relating to the first secondary copy may be performed using the replication copy instead of the first secondary copy.

Scalable Database Management Software on a Cluster of Nodes Using a Shared-Distributed Flash Memory

A distributed database system has multiple compute nodes each running an instance of a database management system (DBMS) program that accesses database records in a local buffer cache. Records are persistently stored in distributed flash memory on multiple storage nodes. A Sharing Data Fabric (SDF) is a middleware layer between the DBMS programs and the storage nodes and has API functions called by the DBMS programs when a requested record is not present in the local buffer cache. The SDF fetches the requested record from flash memory and loads a copy into the local buffer cache. The SDF has threads on a home storage node that locate database records using a node map. A global cache directory locks and pins records to local buffer caches for updating by a node's DBMS program. DBMS operations are grouped into transactions that are committed or aborted together as a unit.

System and method for database replication by interception of in memory transactional change records

A system and method are directed towards providing a database replication technique using interception in memory of the transaction change data records. The invention employs Input / Output instrumentation to capture and split out the in memory transaction change journal records. Captured memory blocks are sent to a parser, which concatenates the records into a single record, and creates a redo / undo vector that can be converted to original DML / DDL statements. Source level transformations can be applied to the vectors, which are then sent to a post agent on the same or a different computing device. The post agents may perform destination level transformations, and generate DML / DDL statements to be executed by the corresponding destination RDBMS instance. Post agents may also perform conflict detection and resolution during DML / DDL statement executions. Transaction consistency is supported by performing commits / rollback on the destination after receiving the redo / undo vector representing a commit / rollback on the source.
