AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current methods for uplink control information (UCI) reporting in Extended Reality (XR) environments do not effectively indicate unused configured grant (CG) Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) transmission occasions, leading to inefficient resource utilization and scheduling.

Method used

The proposed solution involves determining whether CG PUSCH transmission occasions are to be indicated as used or unused based on the availability information of the Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) process associated with each occasion, and transmitting this information as uplink control information (UCI).

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for dynamic indication of unused CG PUSCH occasions, optimizing resource utilization and improving communication reliability by enabling the allocation of unused resources to other terminal devices.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to apparatuses, methods, and computer readable storage media for uplink control information reporting. A first apparatus determines that an indication comprising uplink control information (UCI) is to be transmitted to a second apparatus. The first apparatus determines whether at least one configured grant (CG) transmission occasion is to be indicated as used or unused based at least in part on availability information of a Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) process associated with the at least one CG transmission occasion. The first apparatus transmits, to the second apparatus, the UCI comprising a usage indication of the at least one CG transmission occasion. In this way, the UCI is able to provide a dynamic indication of unused CG PUSCH occasion (s) by taking the availability of HARQ process into consideration. Therefore, the network resource utilization and communication reliability can be improved.

[0047] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may configure the first apparatus 110 with a CG configuration, which indicates one or more CG PUSCH transmission occasion within a CG PUSCH period among others. With the CG configuration, the first apparatus 110 may perform possible UL transmissions on the configured CG PUSCH transmission occasion (s) .

[0048] The usage of the configured CG PUSCH transmission occasion (s) for a CG period may depend on the UL data in a buffer of the first apparatus 110 to be transmitted. The first apparatus 110 may report the usage of the CG PUSCH transmission occasion (s) to the second apparatus 120 via UCI. In a case that one or more CG PUSCH transmission occasions are determined to be unused or cancelled, the first apparatus 110 may provide a UTO indication in the UCI, which is also called UTO-UCI in the context of the present disclosure. For example, the first apparatus 110 may provide a UTO-UCI in each CG PUSCH transmission occasion.

[0049] In some example embodiments, the UTO indication may be in a form of a bitmap. The first apparatus 110 may multiplex the UTO indication represented by a bitmap of a number of bits (e.g., OUTO-UCI bits) in each CG PUSCH transmission for the for the CG-PUSCH configuration. The OUTO-UCO bits of UTO-UCI,  may have a one-to-one mapping to OUTO-UCI the subsequent CG-PUSCH transmission occasions in ascending order of the start time. As one of the example configurations, a bit value of ‘0’ may indicate that the first apparatus 110 may transmit CG-PUSCH, and a bit value of ‘1’ may indicate that the first apparatus 110 will not transmit CG-PUSCH, in a corresponding CG-PUSCH transmission occasion. In a case where the first apparatus 110 indicates by UTO-UCI a value of ‘1’ for a CG-PUSCH transmission occasion, the first apparatus 110 may continue to indicate the value of ‘1’ for the CG-PUSCH transmission occasion by UTO-UCI multiplexed in subsequent CG-PUSCH transmissions, and the first apparatus 110 does not transmit CG-PUSCH in the CG-PUSCH transmission occasion.

[0050] With the UTO-UCI, the second apparatus 120 may allocate the resources corresponding to the CG-PUSCH transmission occasions indicated to be unused to other terminal devices.

[0051] In determining whether one or more CG transmission occasions are to be used or unused, in addition to the data amount of the UL data to be transmitted, the first apparatus 110 may further consider an availability of a HARQ process associated with the CG transmission occasion (s) . Each CG PUSCH may be associated with a HARQ process identified by a HARQ process ID. In a CG PUSCH configuration with multiple CG PUSCH transmission occasions within a CG period, it assumes one transport block (TB) per PUSCH.

[0052] In some example embodiments, a CG retransmission timer (i.e., cg-RetransmissionTimer) may be configured for indicating the availability of the HARQ process. In particular, for each UL TB transmission, the HARQ process ID (HPID) corresponding to this TB cannot be utilized for a new TB transmission within a time window (i.e., until a timer expires) . For example, in case of UL CG transmission, for each UL TB transmission and HARQ process, the HARQ process ID will be kept for this TB for possible HARQ retransmission until the CG retransmission timer expires.

[0053] In some other example embodiments, the HARQ process ID for the first configured PUSCH in a period may be determined as below:HARQ Process ID = [X*floor ( (CURRENT_symbol )  / periodicity) ] modulo nrofHARQ-Processes                                     (1)

[0054] where X represents the number of configured CG PUSCHs in the CG period.

[0055] The HARQ process ID of the remaining configured CG PUSCHs in the CG period is determined by incrementing the HARQ process ID of the preceding PUSCH in the CG period by one with module operation with nrofHARQ-Processes.

[0056] FIG. 2 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example configuration 200 of HARQ process ID in multi-PUSCH CG according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the example of FIG. 2, there are M CG PUSCH transmission occasions per CG period. The first M CG PUSCH transmission occasions in the first CG PUSCH period are used for CG PUSCHs, which are associated with HPID 1 to HPID M respectively. Each HARQ process ID is to be kept until the corresponding CG timer expires. Thus, the HPID M is unviable for the first CG PUSCH transmission occasion in the second CG period, since the CG timer corresponding to HPID M is still running at the start of this CG PUSCH transmission occasion.

[0057] Additionally, or alternatively, if the HARQ process ID of one CG PUSCH transmission occasion is used by another CG or DG PUSCH which (re) starts the CG timer as well. This may also result in the HARQ process ID being unavailable.

[0058] In some example embodiments, a link from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , and a link from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 130 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second apparatus 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0059] In some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0060] It is to be understood that the number of apparatuses and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication network 100 may include any suitable number of apparatuses configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional apparatuses and connections may be deployed in the communication network 100.

[0061] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0062] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution of UCI reporting. The UCI is able to provide a dynamic indication of unused CG PUSCH occasion (s) by taking the availability of HARQ process into consideration. Furthermore, in some cases where the UCI setting is not affected by the availability of HARQ process, the gNB is aware that the UE would not use the CG PUSCH occasion without available HARQ process ID. The gNB may then allocate resources corresponding to those CG PUSCH occasions indicated or determined to be unused for other possible CG transmissions. In this way, the network resource utilization and communication reliability can be improved.

[0063] The proposed solution will be discussed in detail in connection with FIGs. 3 to 5.FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart for a UCI reporting process 300 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The UCI reporting process 300 may involve a terminal device (e.g., the first apparatus 110) and a network device (e.g., the second apparatus 120) . For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the mechanism 300.

[0064] The first apparatus 110 is configured with at least one CG transmission occasion for UL transmission. In the process 300, the first apparatus 110 determines (305) that an indication comprising UCI is to be reported to the second apparatus 120.

[0065] The first apparatus 110 further determines (310) whether at least one CG transmission occasion is to be indicated as used or unused based at least in part on availability information of a HARQ process associated with the at least one CG transmission occasion.

[0066] In this way, the UE takes into account whether the HARQ process ID for a corresponding CG PUSCH occasion is available or not for new transmission via CG.

[0067] In some example embodiments, the availability information of the HARQ process may indicate a CG timer for the HARQ process is running or not at the start of the at least one CG transmission occasion.

[0068] More specifically, for a specific the CG transmission occasion, the first apparatus 110 may determine whether the CG timer (e.g., configuredGrantTimer) for the HARQ process associated with this CG transmission occasion is running at the start of the CG occasion, as the CG transmission occasion would be unavailable for new transmission if the CG timer is running. If an identity of the HARQ process (e.g., HARQ process ID or HPID) is unavailable, then this CG PUSCH occasion is indicated to be cancelled or unused regardless of the buffer status of the first apparatus 110, i.e., the CG transmission occasion is indicated as ‘unused’ .

[0069] Otherwise, if the CG timer is not running at that time, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the HARQ process ID is available. In this case, the associated CG transmission occasion is indicated as used, if there is uplink data in the buffer to be transmitted with the CG transmission occasion.

[0070] Alternatively, or additionally, in some example embodiments, the availability information of the HARQ process may indicate whether the HARQ process ID is used or unused by another grant transmission. The grant transmission may be, for example, CG or DG PUSCH transmissions.

[0071] If the HARQ process ID is used by another grant transmission, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the HARQ process ID is unavailable, and the associated CG transmission occasion is indicated as unused. Otherwise, if the HARQ process ID is not used by another grant transmission, the associated CG transmission occasion is indicated as used, if there is uplink data in the buffer to be transmitted with the CG transmission occasion.

[0072] The first apparatus 110 then transmits (315) the UCI comprising a usage indication of the at least one CG transmission occasion to the second apparatus 120. The usage indication may refer to the UTO indication.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the usage indication in the UCI may be in a form of a bitmap. Each bit of the bitmap corresponds to a CG transmission occasion. By way of example, a first value of the bit (e.g., 0) may indicate the corresponding CG transmission occasion to be used for transmission of uplink data, and a second value of the bit (e.g., 1) may indicate the corresponding CG transmission occasion to be unused.

[0074] The availability of HARQ process associated with a CG transmission occasion may affect the UCI generation. As an example, assuming that there are six CG transmission occasions configured for one CG period, and the first apparatus 110 may determine that three CG transmission occasions are needed for empty the UL data in its buffer, which may be based on, for example, the buffer status and transport block size (TBS) of the CG configuration. The first apparatus 110 may check whether the HARQ process IDs corresponding to the first three CG transmission occasions are available, if all the three HARQ process IDs are available, then the bitmap of the UTO-UCI may be set as “000111” , where the value “0” indicates that a corresponding CG transmission occasion is to be used (or “not unused” ) , and the value “1” indicates that the corresponding CG transmission occasion is not to be used (or “unused” ) . While in a case for example the HARQ process ID of the first CG PUSCH occasion is occupied (i.e., unavailable) and the HARQ process IDs of the second and the third CG PUSCH occasion are not occupied (i.e., available) , the bitmap of the UTO-UCI may be set as “100011” .

[0075] In some example embodiments, the bitmap may be generated at a Media Access Control (MAC) layer of the first apparatus 110, and then delivered to a physical (PHY) layer of the first apparatus 110 for generation of the UCI. In the above example, the MAC layer may deliver the bitmap “100011” to the PHY layer.

[0076] Alternately, in some example embodiments, the MAC layer may simply inform the PHY layer of information about the needed CG transmission occasions. For example, the MAC layer may determine the number of CG transmission occasions for transmission of the uplink data based on an amount of UL data in the buffer, that is, the number of CG transmission occasions needed to empty the buffer. Moreover, the MAC layer also provides the availability information of the HARQ processes associated with the configured CG transmission occasions. Such availability information may either be bitmap-based or explicitly indicate which HARQ process ID is not available. The PHY layer may then build the UTO-UCI based on (i) the number of CG transmission occasions needed to empty the buffer; and (ii) the availability information of the HARQ process ID(s) , and transmit to the second apparatus 120 accordingly.

[0077] The solution proposed in the example embodiments of the present disclosure also supports the scenario where the UCI setting is not affected by the availability of HARQ process. In these embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may not necessarily generate the UCI by taking the availability of HARQ process into account, since the second apparatus 120 knows that the first apparatus 110 would not use the CG transmission occasion (s) without an available HARQ process ID. However, the first apparatus 110 may takes into account those CG transmission occasions being usable and would exclude those occasions when it determines the further CG occasions as used or not depending on the buffer status.

[0078] In the above case, the second apparatus 120 may receive the UCI comprising the usage indication of at least one CG transmission occasion that may not necessarily be set based on the availability of associated HARQ process. The second apparatus 120 may determine, based on availability information of a HARQ process associated with the at least one CG transmission occasion and the usage indication in the UCI, whether the at least one transmission occasion is to be used by the first apparatus 110.

[0079] By way of example, the second apparatus 120 may determine whether a CG timer for the HARQ process is running at the start of the CG transmission occasion. If the CG timer is running, the second apparatus 120 may then determine that an identity of the HARQ process is unavailable and thus the associated CG transmission occasion is to be unused by the first apparatus 110.

[0080] By way of another example, the second apparatus 120 may determine whether the HARQ process ID is used by another grant transmission. If the HARQ process ID is used by the grant transmission, the second apparatus 120 may determine that the HARQ process ID is unavailable, and thus the associated CG transmission occasion is to be indicated as unused by the first apparatus 110.

[0081] After determining the at least one CG transmission occasion is to be unused by the first apparatus 110, in some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may allocate the at least one CG transmission occasion for an UL transmission from a terminal device different from the first apparatus 110.

[0082] It should be understood that although some of the embodiments are described in the context of CG transmission occasions within one CG period, the proposed solution can be easily applied to the scenario where UTO indication is for CG transmission occasions over multiple periods as well as CG configuration without multiple CG occasions per period.

[0083] FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at an apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The apparatus may be a terminal device, such as, UE. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0084] At block 410, the first apparatus determines that an indication comprising UCI is to be transmitted to a second apparatus.

[0085] At block 420, the first apparatus determines whether at least one configured grant, CG, transmission occasion is to be indicated as used or unused based at least in part on availability information of a HARQ process associated with the at least one CG transmission occasion.

[0086] At block 430, the first apparatus transmits, to the second apparatus, the UCI comprising a usage indication of the at least one CG transmission occasion.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the availability information of the HARQ process indicates at least one of the following:

[0088] ● a CG timer for the HARQ process is running or not at the start of the at least one CG transmission occasion, or

[0089] ● an identity of the HARQ process is used or unused by another grant transmission.

[0090] In some example embodiments, the method 400 may further comprise: determining whether a CG timer for the HARQ process is running at the start of the at least one CG transmission occasion; and in accordance with a determination that the CG timer is running, determining that an identity of the HARQ process is unavailable and the associated CG transmission occasion is to be indicated as unused.

[0091] In some example embodiments, the method 400 may further comprise: in accordance with a determination that the CG timer is not running and uplink data is to be transmitted with the CG transmission occasion, determining that the identity of the HARQ process is available and the associated CG transmission occasion is to be indicated as used.
