AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing technologies face challenges in efficiently determining and managing uplink control information (UCI) for configured grant (CG) in telecommunications, particularly in handling discarding events and dynamic resource allocation.

Method used

The solution involves determining data to be transmitted in an uplink configured grant (UL CG) occasion and assessing whether a portion of remaining data needs to be discarded before a subsequent UL CG occasion. Based on this assessment, UCI is generated and transmitted along with the data, indicating whether future CG PUSCH occasions should be marked as used or unused.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for proper rescheduling of unused resources by accurately indicating the status of CG PUSCH occasions, even in the presence of discarding events, thereby enhancing resource utilization and efficiency in telecommunications systems.

[0057] For any other CG PUSCH occasion that is not indicated as “unused” , the UE is allowed to transmit or not to transmit CG PUSCH on that CG PUSCH occasion according to any suitable manners.

[0058] In some implementations, the UTO-UCI indication for a CG configuration is applicable to only valid CG PUSCH transmission opportunities (TOs) , if any.

[0059] In some implementations, a configured CG PUSCH is invalid if the CG PUSCH is dropped due to collision with DL symbol (s) indicated by tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationCommon or tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationDedicated or Synchronization Signal and physical broadcast channel (PBCH) block (SSB) . Otherwise, it is valid.

[0060] In some implementations, a CG PUSCH occasion indicated as “unused” earlier, is not allowed to be indicated as “NOT unused later” .

[0061] In some implementations, a CG PUSCH occasion indicated as “NOT unused” earlier, can be indicated as “unused” later.

[0062] In some implementations, indication of UTO-UCI by CG PUSCHs associated to a CG configuration, is enabled by configuration of an RRC parameter.

[0063] In some implementations, for a CG configuration with UTO-UCI indication enabled, the indicated CG PUSCH may be determined by a UTO-UCI indication.

[0064] In some implementations, for UTO-UCI indication, the RRC parameter Nu (Nu is the size of bit-map) may be configured. Further, parameter UTO_offset may be the offset value. In some embodiment, the UTO_Offset is provided by a configuration. Alternatively, the UTO_Offset is defined to be ‘0’ , which is equivalent to the UTO_offset not being specified / configured.

[0065] In some implementations, a transmitted CG PUSCH, carries UTO-UCI that is  applicable to the Nu consecutive and valid CG PUSCH TOs, starting with UTO_offset from the end of the transmitted CG PUSCH.

[0066] In some implementations, extending the UTO_UCI indication by CG PUSCH (s) of a CG configuration to CG PUSCH (s) of other CG configuration (s) is not supported.

[0067] In some implementations, for a CG configuration with UTO-UCI indication enabled: the range value for the RRC parameter Nu (Nu is the size of bit-map) may be (3, …, 8) .

[0068] In the following, a discarding scenario is described in some specific example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments described with regard to the discarding are equally applicable to other change discarding, including and not limited to, new data arrival. Merely for brevity, the same or similar contents are omitted here.

[0069] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0070] It is noted that any section / subsection headings provided herein are not intended to be limiting. Embodiments are described throughout this document, and any type of embodiment may be included under any section / subsection. Furthermore, embodiments disclosed in any section / subsection may be combined with any other embodiments described in the same section / subsection and / or a different section / subsection in any manner.

[0071] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 100 includes a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. A serving area provided by the second apparatus 120 is called a cell. The second apparatus 120 can provide one or more cells, for example, a cell 102 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0072] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may be comprised in a terminal device and the second apparatus 120 may be comprised in a network device serving the terminal device.

[0073] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) and the second apparatus 120 operating as a network device (e.g., a gNB) . However, in some  example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other apparatus, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other apparatus.

[0074] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 is a terminal device and the second apparatus 120 is a network device, a link from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) apparatus (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 110 is a receiving (RX) apparatus (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX apparatus (or a transmitter) and the second apparatus 120 is a RX apparatus (or a receiver) .

[0075] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0076] In FIG. 1, scheduling in UL may be realized by employing CG. For CG based scheduling, at least some of the transmission parameters are configured via RRC message. The actual uplink grant may either be configured via RRC (type1) or provided via the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) (addressed to configured scheduling (CS) -radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) ) (type2) . The main characteristics of NR UL CG may be:

[0077] ● UL radio resources for sending one transport block with a regular time-periodicity is configured for a UE;

[0078] ● The CG is configured with some periodicity;

[0079] ● Up to 12 configured grant configurations per BWP (configured through RRC signaling) .

[0080] By far, although some discussions on dynamic indication of unused CG PUSCH occasion (s) based on new UCI have been made, a detailed UE behavior for canceling (i.e. indicating as “unused” ) CG PUSCH occasions in a CG period (or across multiple CG periods) is still missing. In summary, there is no discussion regarding this procedure, its criteria, and further details, which are expected to be discussed in the following study.

[0081] As already agreed, a UE can signal a UTO-UCI in each CG PUSCH occasion as long as it has data to transmit in it. As default, all CG PUSCH occasions are marked as used. However, the current agreements have not yet considered any rule (s) to the UE about reporting unused CG PUSCH occasions. If such rule (s) are not specified and left for UE implementation, the updated UTO-UCI of the UE might not arrive at the gNB in time, and therefore, the gNB may not be able to reschedule the unused resources to other UEs. Moreover, with unspecified UE behavior, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to specify test cases and corresponding conformance tests for the UTO-UCI indication. In both cases, the UTO-UCI feature would become in practice unusable. As a result, the proper UE behavior is desirable to be discussed.

[0082] In a possible solution, UTO-UCI arrives on time to the gNB such that the latter has enough time to reschedule the resources of the unused CG PUSCH occasion (s) to other users. Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which illustrates an example timing indicating that it is impossible to indicate a CG PUSCH occasion as unused due to discarding.

[0083] In the example of FIG. 2, the UE uses the buffer status at the given time of UTO-UCI transmission (buffer status B (n) in FIG. 2) and the transport block size (TBS) allocated in future CG occasions (n+1, n+2, and n+3) to determine if these coming CG occasions (n+1, n+2, and n+3) will be used or unused. In addition, the indication in UCI is changed to unused only at the latest CG occasion such that the gNB has enough time to reuse those resources (e.g., UTO-UCI sent in occasion n to indicate occasion n+2 as  unused in FIG. 2) .

[0084] The problem is that this manner of reporting the UTO-UCI does not take into consideration important events (e.g., discarding) , that may take place between CG PUSCH occasions. An example of this event is in FIG. 2. At CG occasion n, based on the buffer status and TBS of CG occasions n+1, n+2, and n+3, the UE determines that CG occasions n+2 and n+3 will be unused. However, in FIG. 2, in the UTO-UCI signaled in occasion n, the UE only signals CG occasion n+2 as unused, while occasion n+3 is signaled as used, since the UE can still use the UTO-UCI to be signaled in CG occasion n+1 to indicate it as unused. This is done to enable the UE to still use the CG occasion n+3 in case new data arrives between CG occasions n and n+1.

[0085] However, let us consider the case where at time τ’ , between CG occasions n and n+1, a packet discard takes place. This could result in the data originally meant to be transmitted in CG occasion n+1 to be discarded. Then, the UTO-UCI in occasion n+1 cannot be transmitted since the occasion is skipped (as there is no data left in the buffer after discarding) , and therefore there is no possibility to change the status of CG occasion n+3 to unused (i.e., the status remains as used) .

[0086] The present disclosure at least resolves the problem of only using the buffer status and the transport block size (TBS) allocated in future CG occasions at the UTO-UCI transmission as reference to determine and indicate the status (used / unused) of following CG PUSCH occasions when event like e.g., discarding take place, thus allowing the rescheduling of unused resources (in CG occasion n+3 in the example shown in FIG. 2) .

[0087] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for UCI determination for CG. In this solution, the first apparatus 110 may determine data in a buffer of the first apparatus to be transmitted in an UL CG occasion and determine whether at least a portion of remaining data in the buffer is to be discarded before at least one further UL CG occasion subsequent to the UL CG occasion. The remaining data may comprise data buffered in the first apparatus except for the data to be transmitted in the UL CG occasion. The first apparatus 110 may generate UCI based on the remaining data and the determination of the discarding and transmit, to a second apparatus, data in the UL CG occasion along with the UCI.

[0088] Merely for better understanding the processes discussed in the present disclosure,  some example embodiments will be discussed with reference to FIGS. 3-5.

[0089] A UE procedure to define a rule to set the UTO-UCI report to indicate the number of unused CG PUSCH occasions in a CG period is discussed below. The UE procedure consists of using the buffer status at the CG occasion instead of the one at the time when the UTO-UCI is sent, taking the potential discard in between into account. The UE procedure is executed at the time instant the UE determines the content of the UTO-UCI.

[0090] It is to be noted that the UE procedure may be applied to the scenario where the cancellation (unused) indication is for CG PUSCH occasions over single or multiple CG periods, as well as CG configuration without multiple CG PUSCH occasions per period.

[0091] Reference is made to FIG. 3, which illustrates a signaling flow 300 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0092] It is to be understood that the operations at the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 should be coordinated. In other words, the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 should have common understanding about configurations, parameters and so on. Such common understanding may be implemented by any suitable interactions between the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 or both the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 applying the same rule / policy.

[0093] In the following, although some operations are described from a perspective of the first apparatus 110, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the second apparatus 120. Similarly, although some operations are described from a perspective of the second apparatus 120, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the first apparatus 110. Merely for brevity, some of the same or similar contents are omitted here.

[0094] In the example of FIG. 3, the first apparatus 110 may be a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 may be a network apparatus.

[0095] With reference to FIG. 3, a multiple-criteria UE behavior to notify the gNB about whether a specific CG PUSCH occasion is unused will be discussed.

[0096] The second apparatus 120 configures (310) UL CG PUSCH resources to the UE,  i.e., the second apparatus 120 may configure multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions. For example, the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions may be included in a period of a single UL CG PUSCH configuration. It is also possible that the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions may be included in multiple periods.

[0097] Upon determining the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions, the first apparatus 110 may determine data in the buffer of the first apparatus 110 to be transmitted in each of the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions.

[0098] For each UL CG occasion after the filling of the transport block with data and before sending the UTO-UCI bits to layer 1, below operations may be performed.

[0099] The first apparatus 110 may fill (320) the TB for a current UL CG occasion, i.e., fill the allocated TB. The current UL CG occasion may be considered as the first UL CG occasion in the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions.

[0100] The first apparatus 110 may further determine whether at least a portion of remaining data in the buffer of the first apparatus 110 is to be discarded before at least one other UL CG occasion subsequent to the current UL CG occasion. The remaining data may comprise data buffered in the first apparatus 110 except for the data to be transmitted in the current UL CG occasion.

[0101] Then the first apparatus 110 may executes the procedure to mark (330) future UL CG occasions (i.e., UL CG occasions subsequent to the current UL CG occasion in the multiple UL CG PUSCH occasions) as used or candidates for cancellation (i.e., potentially unused) considering predicted discard events.

[0102] The first apparatus 110 may apply cancellation algorithm on the remainder of the UTO-UCI occasions using the marked cancellation candidates. The details of the cancellation algorithm are not limited in this regard.

[0103] After determining the future UL CG occasions as used or candidates for cancellation considering predicted discard events, the first apparatus 110 may generate UCI based on the remaining data and the determination of the discarding and transmit data in the UL CG occasion along with the UCI to the second apparatus 120.

[0104] For example, the generated UCI may indicate that each of future UL CG occasions subsequent to the current UL CG occasion is to be used or unused.

[0105] As shown in FIG. 3, the first apparatus 110 marks (340) and sends the UTO-UCI bit to layer 1 for transmission. After that, the first apparatus 110 may transmit (350) the UTO-UCI to the second apparatus 120.

[0106] In a process of the UL CG occasion cancellation, for example, the first apparatus 110 may determine a first respective portion of remaining data to be discarded before each of the plurality of future UL CG occasions and determine, based on the determined first respective portion, a second respective portion of data to be transmitted in each of the plurality of future UL CG occasions. Then the first apparatus 110 may determine, based on the determined first and second respective portions, a sum of data to be discarded and a sum of data to be transmitted before one of the further UL CG occasions in the plurality of UL CG occasions and determine the data amount in the remaining data before one of the further UL CG occasions based on the sum of data to be discarded and the sum of data to be transmitted.

[0107] With the above-mentioned embodiments, the UL CG occasion cancellation may be achieved as illustrated in FIG. 4, which illustrates an example timing 400 of UL CG occasion cancellation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0108] In some examples, the first apparatus 110 may mark the future UL CG occasions as used or candidates for cancellation based on operations as below. First, first apparatus 110 may assume all UL CG occasions as used at the start. Then the first apparatus 110 may calculate the predicted utilization of the UL CG occasions in the current UTO-UCI reporting period by accounting for the predicted discard. The first apparatus 110 may mark some future UL CG occasions for potential discard based on utilization predictions.

[0109] A specific example embodiment for marking the future UL CG occasions is discussed as below.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the indication of the UTO-UCI for a UL CG occasion m, transmitted at UL CG occasion n (m>n) is based on the following: the buffer status at UL CG occasion n; the TBS allocated in UL CG occasions between n and m. For this example, the TBS is the same for all UL CG occasions. In other example, different TBSs may be corresponding to different UL CG occasions; the buffer status at occasion m considering a potential discarding. Then the UE may send the UTO-UCI bit to layer 1 for transmission.

[0111] Reference is now made to FIG. 4, at the UL CG occasion n, the first apparatus 110 runs the procedure to determine the buffer status at UL CG occasion m=n+3, which will be discussed with reference to FIG. 5. FIG. 5 illustrates a flow chart 500 of an example procedure at the first apparatus 110 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0112] As shown in FIG. 5, the first apparatus 110 may determine (at block 501) the current TB size T (n) . After filling the TB size T (n) , the first apparatus 110 may check (at block 502) the amount of remaining data it has in its buffer B (n) . Then, the first apparatus 110 determines (at blocks 503-506) the estimated amount of data to be transmitted based on the TBS allocated for UL CG occasions between n and m=n+3 {T (n+1) , T (n+2) , T (n+3) } . After that, the first apparatus 110 may determine the amount of data discarded at time τ′, D (n, m) , which occurs before occasion m=n+3.

[0113] The first apparatus 110 determines the buffer status after transmission of each CG PUSCH occasion (s) as below: B (n+1) =B (n) -D (n, n+1) -T (n+1) B (n+2) =B (n) -D (n, n+2) -T (n+1) -T (n+2) B (n+3) =B (n) -D (n, m) -T (n+1) -T (n+2) -T (n+3)   (1)

[0114] In general:

[0115] where, i ∈ 1…m.

[0116] The first apparatus 110 determines (at block 507) which ones are candidates to be indicated as unused UL CG occasions in the UTO-UCI for the UL CG occasion [n+1, …, m]. Further, if B (n+i) +T (n+i) ≤0 (or a threshold value) , then UL CG occasion n+i is marked as candidate for cancellation (at block 511) . Otherwise, UL CG occasion n+i is not a candidate for cancellation (at block 509) . In the following, the first apparatus 110 uses the marked occasion (s) to signal the unused CG PUSCH occasions in the UTO-UCI (at block 510) .

[0117] This discard prediction is for the [n, m = n+3] interval and it is based on discard timers in the PDCP layer. The discard time evaluation can be modified from its PDCP state by the scheduler entity in cases of congestion and be pulled ahead of the PDCP reported time. Such functionality is not evaluated further here.

[0118] It is also possible that the first apparatus 110 may consider asking for UL grant for possible dynamic grants before the expiry of the discard timers. If the first apparatus 110 manages to get an UL opportunity to transmit data, the buffer calculations in this step should be updated.

[0119] With the above processes, the future UL CG occasion (s) may be marked to be “unused” properly according to the dynamic changing data amount.

[0120] FIG. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.
