AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The existing technologies face challenges in reducing the activation delay of secondary cells (SCells) in new radio (NR) systems, particularly due to the uncertainty in the timing of Layer 3 (L3) measurement reporting after a cell activation command.

Method used

The proposed solution involves an activation scheme where, after receiving a cell activation command, the user equipment (UE) transmits a measurement report on a pre-configured or explicitly indicated uplink resource, thereby minimizing the uncertainty in reporting time and reducing activation delay.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for earlier scheduling of data transfers based on the L3 report and minimizes the uncertainty in reporting time, thereby reducing the activation delay of SCells in NR systems.

[0026] As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0027] As used herein, unless stated explicitly, performing a step “in response to A” does not indicate that the step is performed immediately after “A” occurs and one or more intervening steps may be included.

[0028] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as  well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0029] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0030] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0031] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0032] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0033] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0034] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0035] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0036] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as New Radio (NR) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) ,  High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0037] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture comprises a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) at an IAB donor node. An IAB node comprises a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.

[0038] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer,  image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0039] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other combination of the time, frequency, space and / or code domain resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0040] As mentioned above, if a UE activates a deactivated SCell, it takes time i.e., activation delay Tactivation_time to transition from a deactivated state to an activated state. The delay requirement is defined within which the UE shall be able to activate a deactivated SCell, upon receiving the SCell activation command in slot n , no later than in slot for example, as specified in the third generation partnership project (3GPP) standards such as 3GPP TS 38.133 section 8.3.2.

[0041] It is approved to reduce the SCell activation delay in frequency range 2 (FR2) . Moreover, it is agreed that the UE may assist reduction of the activation by sending Layer  3 (L3) measurement reporting to the network after the SCell activation command. For example, the UE may send the L3 measurement reporting after SCell activation command if there is a valid measurement result when receiving the SCell activation command. The L3 measurement report after SCell activation command for unknown FR2 SCell activation may be triggered by the SCell activation command.

[0042] A SCell may have known and unknown states. If a SCell is "known" , it may mean that the UE has sent a L3 measurement report within a certain time period prior to receiving the SCell activation command and reported synchronization signal block (SSB) indexes remain detectable. Otherwise, it is considered as unknown.

[0043] The timeline for an SCell activation procedure with such UE reporting is illustrated in FIG. 1. If the UE has a valid L3 measurement reporting at a time 105 of SCell activation, the UE may transmit the L3 report at a time 110 after SCell activation command to provide beam information to a network (NW) . The network may hence determine a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state for the following CSI-RS transmission based on the L3 report. As a result, the legacy activation steps e.g., automatic gain control (AGC) , time / frequency synchronization and layer 1 Reference Signal Receiving Power (L1-RSRP) measurement and report may be skipped for fast SCell activation. It is further agreed the L3 report may reuse existing L3 measurement reporting and thus it needs to be transmitted in a radio resource control (RRC) message on uplink (UL) grant resources. Such L3 measurement reporting may reduce the SCell activation delay for activating an FR2 unknown SCell.

[0044] It is agreed to define a delay requirement or a time margin for a L3 report after the SCell activation command, but the value is for further study (FFS) . For example, the UE may report an L3-RSRP report with an SSB index within [Y] ms after receiving the SCell activation command MAC CE if the UL grant is available. In other words, the UE is not required to report the L3-RSRP report after exceeding [Y] ms where Y= THARQ +[M]ms and M is FFS. As shown in FIG. 1, Y represents the maximum time delay between the time 105 of the SCell activation and the time 110 of the L3 reporting, and THARQ represents a time delay 115 between the time 105 of SCell activation to a time 120 of a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) acknowledgement (ACK) .

[0045] In a multiple SCell activation procedure as described in TS 38.321, sections 5.9, 6.1.3.10 and 6.1.3.55, a bit in the SCell activation command is used to indicate an  activation state for each SCell index. If a bit of a SCell index is set, the corresponding SCell is activated, and if the bit is cleared, the SCell is deactivated. However, the network will not schedule the UE on the SCell until the UE has sent an HARQ ACK and an L3 measurement report. That is the limiting factor for a time when data transfer can start on the SCell.

[0046] The UE may evaluate the validity of available measurement results when receiving the SCell activation command, and the L3 report (if being triggered) may be ready at the time of receiving SCell activation command. Hence, the UE may not need additional time to derive the L3 report after SCell activation command. In the case that there is an available UL grant immediately after the SCell activation command, the UE may be able to send the L3 report right after THARQ since the SCell activation command.

[0047] However, the L3 report can be transmitted only when receiving the UL granted resources from the network. In other word, the L3 report may be delayed due to no UL resources available which will increase the SCell activation delay. There is a need to minimize the uncertainty of a time when the UE sends the L3 report.

[0048] Example embodiments of the present disclosure propose an activation scheme. With this scheme, after a first apparatus (such as a UE) receives a cell activation command for activating at least one cell, at least one uplink (UL) resource, which is positioned in association with the cell activation command, is used by the first apparatus to transmit at least one measurement report (which may be the L3 measurement report) for at least one serving cell. The positioning of the UL resource granted for the measurement report may be implicitly or indirectly specified or predefined by requirements or explicitly or directly indicated by signaling.

[0049] The proposed scheme allows the data transfer grants depending from the L3 report to start at the earliest possible time in the terms of network resource scheduling, and minimizes the uncertainty of the time when the UE may send the L3 report. This scheme may reduce the activation delay when activating at least one cell in a single activation command, for example, in a 5G NR system.

[0050] It is to be noted that the proposed scheme herein may be applied in general for activating one cell in different frequency ranges including for example both FR1 and FR2 and may also be applied in general for activating any type of serving cells including both a SCell and a primary SCell (PSCell) . In the following, some example embodiments will  be described using a SCell as an example while the example embodiments herein can be applied in general for a PSCell and other serving cells.

[0051] FIG. 2 illustrates an example communication environment 200 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 200, a plurality of communication devices, including a first apparatus 210 and a second apparatus 220, can communicate with each other.

[0052] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 210 operating as a terminal device and the second apparatus 220 operating as a network device. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other devices, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other devices.

[0053] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 210 is a terminal device and the second apparatus 220 is a network device, a link from the second apparatus 220 to the first apparatus 210 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first apparatus 210 to the second apparatus 220 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 220 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 210 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 210 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second apparatus 220 is a RX device (or a receiver) . If both the first apparatus 210 and the second apparatus 220 are terminal devices, a link between the first apparatus 210 and the second apparatus 220 may be referred to as a sidelink (SL) . In SL, one of the first apparatus 210 and the second apparatus 220 is a TX device (or a transmitter) , and the other of the first apparatus 210 and the second apparatus 220 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0054] Communications in the communication environment 200 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising  but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0055] In the environment 200, the first apparatus 210 may have access to a communication network via a plurality of cells 221, 222, 223 and 224 for carrier aggregation (CA) , for example. In some example embodiments, one of the cells may be a primary cell (PCell) and others of the cells may be SCells. Any or all cells may be provided by the second apparatus 220 or any other suitable devices which may employ the same or different radio access technology. Although fourth cells are shown in FIG. 2, less or more cells may be provided for the first apparatus 210.

[0056] It is to be understood that the numbers and types of devices and cells are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 200 may include any suitable numbers and types of devices and cells adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0057] In the environment 200, at least one cell of the cells 222, 223 and 224 may be activated in a cell activation command such as a MAC command. In various example embodiments, after the cell activation command, the first apparatus 210 transmits at least one measurement report of at least one serving cell on at least one UL resource which is positioned in association with the cell activation command. Some example implementations will be discussed below with reference to FIG. 3A.

[0058] FIG. 3A shows a signaling diagram for a communication process 300 between first apparatus 210 and the second apparatus 220 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0059] In the process 300 as shown in FIG. 3A, the second apparatus 220 transmits (302) a cell activation command for activating at least one cell such as the cell 222, 223 and / or 224 as shown in FIG. 2. The cell activation command may be carried in a MAC message. After the first apparatus 210 receives (304) the cell activation command from the second apparatus 220, the first apparatus 210 transmits (306) , to the second apparatus 220, at least one measurement report for at least one serving cell on at least one uplink resource. The  at least one serving cell may include a cell of the at least one cell to be activated. Alternatively, or in addition, the serving cell may comprise an activated cell, and / or a deactivated cell. In some example embodiments, the serving cell may not include (or may exclude) a cell of the at least one cell, for example, if the first apparatus 110 does not have a valid measurement result of the cell.

[0060] The at least one uplink resource is positioned in association with the cell activation command. The positioning of the at least one uplink resource may be associated with the cell activation command in any suitable way. The positioning of the at least one uplink resource may comprise positioning in a time and / or frequency domain. For different cells, the positioning of the corresponding UL resources may or may not be the same. For example, the UL resources for different cells may have the same timing offset but different frequency offsets, the same frequency offset but different time offsets, or different time offsets and different frequency offsets in association with the cell activation command.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource may comprise timing of the at least one uplink resource which may have a time offset with respect to a time of receiving the cell activation command by the first apparatus 210, with respect to a time of transmitting an ACK for the cell activation command to the second apparatus 220, and / or with respect to any other timing associated with the cell activation command. Alternatively, or in addition, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource may comprise at least one frequency position of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command, which may have a frequency offset with respect to the cell activation command, the ACK for the cell activation command, and / or the like.

[0062] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command may be predefined. For example, uplink resources at a given time offset, e.g., X slots or within X slots after SCell activation may be specified or predefined in the 3GPP standards as a requirement. Thus, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource may be specified via requirement rules.

[0063] Alternatively, or in addition, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command may be configured by the second apparatus 220. Herein, the UL resource either predefined or configured by the network  may also be referred to as a pre-configured UL resource.

[0064] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource may be indicated in the cell activation command. For example, the cell activation command may include a set of parameters associated with the at least one uplink resource which may include at least one parameter about at least one of the timing or the at least one frequency position of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command. The at least one parameter about the timing may indicate timing information such as a time offset of the UL resource in association with the cell activation command. The at least one parameter about the frequency position may indicate frequency information such as a frequency offset of the UL resource in association with the cell activation command.

[0065] Any parameter associated with the at least one uplink resource may be included in the cell activation command. Example parameters may be related to frequency hopping, a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , a resource block group (RBG) size, and / or the like. In this way, the timing and / or the frequency position of the UL resource may be indicated per SCell activation, e.g., in a MAC CE message.

[0066] Alternatively, or in addition, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command may be indicated in a configuration message. The configuration message comprises a radio resource control (RRC) message which may be a RRC reconfiguration message. Other types of configuration messages are also possible.

[0067] The configuration message may be received by the first apparatus 210 from the second apparatus 220 before receiving the cell activation command. In this way, the first apparatus 210 may determine the available UL resource immediately after the cell activation command is received. Thus, the reporting delay may be further reduced.

[0068] In some example embodiments, the configuration message may include a set of parameters associated with the at least one uplink resource, and the set of parameters may include the timing and / or frequency information of the at least one uplink resource. In some other example embodiments, a combination of the cell activation command and the configuration message may be used. For example, the cell activation command may include the timing information and / or frequency information of the at least one uplink  resource in a set of parameters associated with the at least one uplink resource, and the configuration message may include other parameters in the set of parameters. Thus, most parameters of the UL resource may be given to the first apparatus 210 via an RRC message, and only relative positions of the granted UL resource are given by the MAC CE SCell activation, which is more flexible and efficient.

[0069] Alternatively, or in addition, the configuration message may include a set of parameters associated with the at least one uplink resource, and the cell activation command may include at least one index of the at least one uplink resource. As such, all the configurations of the UL resource may be configured via RRC signaling, and only the index of the UL resource may be indicated in the SCell activation command, thereby further improving the efficiency of the cell activation.

[0070] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 210 may transmit, to the second apparatus 220, an indication of capability to use the at least one uplink resource for the transmission of the at least one measurement report. Such an indication of the capability may be transmitted by the first apparatus 210 in response to an enquiry for the capability from the second apparatus 220.

[0071] In some example embodiments, the measurement report may be carried in an L3 message. To further speed up the communication, the L3 report may be sent as a MAC CE message. Compared with a RRC message, the delay of RRC signaling processing may be avoided, which may be magnitudes of the time of MAC signal processing delays on the network side.

[0072] After the second apparatus 220 receives (308) the at least measurement report for the at least one serving cell, the second apparatus 220 may schedule the CSI-RS for channel measurements and data transfer of the activated cell based on the measurement report.

[0073] Example processes of cell activation will be described below with reference to FIG. 3B. In this example, a UE 310 is an example implementation of the first apparatus 210, and a network 315 may represent a network which the second apparatus 220 serves. An L3 measurement report is an example implementation of a measurement report. A Scell is an example of a cell to be activated.

[0074] In a process 320 as shown in FIG. 3B, at 322, the UE 310 and the network 315  may exchange capabilities. For example, at 324, the network 315 inquiries about UE's capability. At 326, the UE indicates that it is able to handle pre-configured resources for sending L3 measurements to complete the SCell activation procedure.

[0075] At 328, the RRC reconfiguration message is used to indicate the positioning of the UL resource. As shown in FIG. 3B, at 330, a RRC reconfiguration message holds the entire configuration for uplink resources for the L3 measurement sent immediately after the MAC CE SCell activation. All aspects of the resources may be derived from the message. At 332, the UE 310 acknowledges the configuration. At 334, the network 315 activates an SCell given by an SCell index. At 336, the UE 310 acknowledges the MAC CE message by a HARQ ACK.

[0076] At 338, the L3 measurement is sent using the resources given in the RRC reconfiguration. The resources are timing wise given relative to the MAC CE SCell activation. At 340, the network 315 starts scheduling data transfer on the SCell.

[0077] At 342, both the RRC reconfiguration message and the SCell activation command are used to indicate the positioning of the UL resource. As shown in FIG. 3B, at 344, the RRC reconfiguration message holds most configurations for uplink resources for the L3 measurement sent immediately after the MAC CE SCell activation. The parameters are relative to the actual MAC CE SCELL activation, and the last few parameters, such as a time offset, an index of the uplink resource and / or the like, are received in the SCell activation command.

[0078] At 346, the UE 310 acknowledges the configuration. At 348, the MAC CE SCELL activation holds the last parameters for the uplink resources to send the L3 measurement, like timing relative to MAC CE SCell activation message. At 350, the UE 310 acknowledges the MAC CE message.

[0079] At 352, the L3 measurement is sent using the resources given in the RRC reconfiguration and the SCell activation. The resources are timing wise given relative to the MAC CE SCELL activation. At 354, the network 315 starts scheduling data transfer on the SCell. In this way, the timing of the L3 measurement reporting can be optimized.

[0080] Example Methods

[0081] FIG. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For  the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 210 in FIG. 2.

[0082] At block 410, the first apparatus 210 receives, from a second apparatus, a cell activation command for activating at least one cell. At block 420, the first apparatus 210 transmits, to the second apparatus, at least one measurement report for at least one serving cell on at least one uplink resource. The at least one uplink resource is positioned in association with the cell activation command.

[0083] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command is predefined or configured by the second apparatus.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command is indicated in at least one of the cell activation command or a configuration message.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the positioning of the at least one uplink resource comprises at least one of timing or at least one frequency position of the at least one uplink resource in association with the cell activation command.
