Description
[0001] LIVESTOCK BOX WITH BREEDING SEPARATION MECHANISM AND AUTOMATED CLEANING DEVICE
[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to the technical field of control and automation engineering, mechanics, biosecurity and more specifically to animal welfare, since it provides a bioterium box with a mechanism for separating offspring and an automated cleaning device.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Viterio boxes, also known as cages or laboratory animal boxes, are fundamental elements in scientific research that involves the use of animals for various purposes, such as biomedical studies, pharmacological experimentation, therapy development, among others.
[0006] These cages are specifically designed to provide a safe and suitable environment for laboratory animals, ensuring their well-being, promoting their natural behavior and minimizing the risk of disease or cross-contamination.
[0007] The use of animals in scientific research dates back centuries, but care and housing practices have evolved over time. In early experiments, animals were kept in rudimentary cages, but as scientific research became more sophisticated, the importance of animal welfare and the need for controlled conditions were recognized. Vivarium boxes are made from durable, non-toxic, and easy-to-clean materials. Most modern boxes are made of clear plastic, such as polycarbonate or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which allows clear observation of the animals without interfering with their environment. Vivarium boxes are designed to meet rigorous biosafety protocols. This includes high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems, physical barriers to prevent cross-contamination, and proper cleaning and disinfection procedures to ensure a pathogen-free environment.
[0008] Some vivarium cages are equipped with automated systems for providing food, water, and temperature control, as well as sensors that monitor environmental parameters such as humidity and light. These technological advances improve care efficiency and minimize human interference.
[0009] Animal cages may also include restraint systems for safe handling of animals. These systems may include special doors or compartments that allow controlled access to the animals without the need for direct handling, reducing stress and the risk of injury for both the animals and the researchers.
[0010] The vivarium cage industry continues to innovate and improve designs to meet the evolving needs of researchers. For example, remote monitoring systems have been developed that allow real-time tracking of environmental parameters, such as temperature and humidity, through sensors and communication systems.A search was carried out for the state of the art of vivarium box with mechanism for separating young and automated cleaning device, where it was found that different ones have been developed, as mentioned in the document of the patent application of Canada number CA1084358 (A), with publication date of August 26, 1980, which has the title "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HANDLING WASTE FROM CAGES FOR SMALL ANIMALS", said document describes a cleaning system for conventional cages for small animals that is made up of a plurality of cages for small animals arranged one next to the other, which comprise a continuous sand tray common to all animal cages, and means arranged along the length of the sand tray to fill it with a semi-solid and durable aqueous foam.It also discloses a method of treating waste, comprising the steps of disposing a durable, semi-solid aqueous foam in the litter pan for a period of time sufficient to receive waste from an animal in the cage, and removing the aqueous foam from the litter pan by means of water jets when the aqueous foam has become fouled; cleaning the aqueous foam from the litter pan in a portable litter pan washing machine in which the water jets are directed against the litter pan; collecting the contents of the litter pan in a compartment of the litter pan washing machine; projecting aqueous foam into the litter pan by means of a foam generating machine; and, disposing aqueous foam into the litter pan by means of a pressurized vessel containing a foam composition and a liquefied gas propellant.
[0011] Document CN115281104 (B2 ) is a Chinese patent, published on December 13, 2022 , with the title "EXPERIMENTAL CAGE CLEANING EQUIPMENT CAPABLE OF INDEPENDENTLY ISOLATING ANIMALS AND WORKING METHOD THEREOF", which describes experimental cage cleaning equipment capable of independently isolating animals and a working method thereof. The experimental cage cleaning equipment comprises an isolation mechanism , a cleaning mechanism, a moving mechanism and a control mechanism . The isolation mechanism includes a restriction part for isolating animals , which is connected to an experimental cage .In the restriction portion, a first connection unit and a filling unit are provided, the first connection unit being connectable to or detachable from a rod body in the experiment cage, and the filling unit being used to fill a space between the restriction portion and a second inlet. The cleaning mechanism comprises a rotating brush unit and a second connection unit, and the first connection unit being connectable to or detachable from the second connection unit. The control mechanism includes a controller and a plurality of sensors, each sensor being used to acquire information about the surrounding environment, and the controller outputs corresponding instructions according to the information about the environment. The restraining mechanism and the space separation mechanism stop outside the experimental cage, and the restraining part serves to temporarily isolate the animals, while the space separation mechanism performs cleaning upon entering only with the moving equipment, thus achieving more efficient cleaning work.
[0012] Also found was German patent application DE102010026097 (Al) published on January 5, 2012, entitled "SMALL ANIMAL CAGE FOR WALL HANGING", which describes a small animal cage for rodents such as hamsters, mice, and gerbils of any kind. The cage's fundamental purpose is to recreate, in a miniaturized form, a system of tunnels and burrows as close as possible to that found in nature, without grids and taking up little space. The cage, in its preferred rectangular shape, has a shallow depth, suitable for compact wall hanging. It has several overlapping floors that together recreate the rodents' tunnel and burrow system in miniature. An acrylic plate with ventilation holes serves as the cage's closure. The cage can be multi-layered, with any number of floors for more complex cage systems, and can be made of wood or plastic. A balcony provides free space for the animals, and the little debris that falls is easily collected with a hand broom.
[0013] Finally, China utility model CN215346391 (U) published on December 31, 2021 with the title "SELF-CLEANING ANIMAL RAISING DEVICE" describes a self-cleaning animal raising device, comprising: an upper part of the box body is provided with an open-type opening; the cage is covered over the opening and forms an animal trapping area together with the box body; the lower screen plate is positioned on the box body and divides the box body into an active area and an operating area;The sewage conveying assembly and the cleaning assembly are placed in the operating area, the sewage conveying assembly comprises a circular transmission conveyor belt, the conveyor belt is correspondingly arranged under the lower screen plate and used to support the sewage from animals on the lower screen plate, and the cleaning assembly is placed under the conveyor belt. The cleaning process is fully automatic, the cleaning efficiency is high, and the cleaning is optimal; the ultraviolet disinfection lamp effectively disinfects after cleaning, prevents the reproduction of harmful substances such as bacteria, and ensures the health of the raised pets and the owner's family members.;
[0014] The documents cited above refer to cage waste handling devices, cage cleaning equipment capable of independently isolating animals, wall-hung cages, and self-cleaning animal husbandry devices; however, no document describes that it has a shavings cleaning mechanism through the use of negative pressure, water and soap used under pressure in the lower section of the box being a joint part of it, making cleaning more efficient while maintaining the safety of the sheltered animals; nor do they describe that the devices can supply new shavings to the floor of the container once the dirty shavings are removed and the floor of said container has been cleaned.
[0015] Another aspect that is not evident in the cited documents is a mechanism for moving grated platforms, which are sections of the floor where the animals contained within the container are located, allowing the platforms to be raised, generating sections independently; in addition to this, they do not describe a mechanism for deploying divisions from the top of the cage, separating its sections in different possible combinations, thus allowing the mother to be separated from her young in a more efficient manner if necessary; as well as allowing the creation of various independent spaces inside the cage to be able to clean the vivarium box; all of the above automatically activated by a control module based on a microcontroller.

[0075] 36. Guides With reference to the figures, the vivarium box with a mechanism for separating the young and an automated cleaning device is made up of a container (1) which lacks its upper face, and its interior is empty, which makes it a hollow space. As for the shape of the container (1), it can be described as prismatic, with rectangular being the most common variant. The faces of said container (1) are made of a resistant and transparent material, allowing with this configuration the visibility of the contained animals and preventing its walls from breaking, thus guaranteeing the safety and well-being of the animals without compromising their physical integrity.
[0076] A guide (2) is placed vertically on the center of the inner face of each of the faces of the container (1), said guides (2) are arranged from the top of the faces of the container (1) until almost reaching the floor.
[0077] A cover (3) that is hollow inside is placed on the upper part of the container (1), which is preferably rectangular prismatic in shape, at least the same dimensions as the container (1); said cover (3) on its lower face has protuberances (4) which are placed along its contour without reaching the edge so that they coincide with the upper part of the container (1) in such a way that it allows an assembly between the cover (3) and the container (1).As shown in Figure 13, the surface of the lower face of the cover (3) has two grooves (5), one is located vertically extending to the center of the lower face of the cover (3), from the top to the bottom, and the second groove (5) is located horizontally to the center of the lower face of the cover (3), from the left side to the right; these two grooves (5) form an intersection at the midpoint of the lower face of the cover (3).
[0078] Four deployment mechanisms (not illustrated) are located on the inside of the cover (3) positioned on the slots (5) one in each formed segment; each deployment mechanism (not illustrated) is made up of a motor (not illustrated) and a reel (not illustrated). A curtain (6) of resistant and semi-flexible material is rolled from one end on each reel (not illustrated) of each deployment mechanism (not illustrated), and the opposite end of the four curtains (6) that is not rolled on the reel (not illustrated) is assembled in the guides (2) of the container (1), this configuration allows the curtains (6) to fold or unfold inside the container when the motor (not illustrated) of the deployment mechanisms (not illustrated) is actuated, generating divisions inside the container (1)
[0079] A first control module (not illustrated) is housed inside the cover (3), and is made up of a microcontroller (not illustrated), a power supply (not illustrated) and a wireless communication unit (not illustrated) and are interconnected with each other and with the deployment mechanisms (not illustrated), this configuration allows said deployment mechanisms to be activated together or independently, by means of an intelligent device that is connected to the wireless communication unit (not illustrated); in such a way that divisions can be made inside the container (1) by means of the curtains (6) according to the needs of separating the young from the animals contained in an automated manner.A first charging port (7) which is preferably a USB type C connector is placed on the surface of any of the faces of the base of the cover (3), said first charging port (7) is connected to the power supply (not illustrated) in order to charge it and thus energize the microcontroller (not illustrated), the wireless communication unit (not illustrated) and the deployment mechanisms (not illustrated) housed inside the cover (3), for later use.
[0080] The deployment mechanisms are connected to the microcontroller (not illustrated) of the first control module (not illustrated) housed inside the cover (3), to program its activation by means of an intelligent device that is connected to the wireless communication unit (not illustrated) of the same control module.
[0081] A rectangular prismatic base (8) that is hollow inside is placed beneath the container (1) to support it. A second control module (not shown) is housed inside the base (8) and is comprised of a microcontroller (not shown), a power supply (not shown) and a wireless communication unit (not shown).
[0082] The base (8) has a plurality of linear actuators (9) on its periphery, of which preferably four are located on the front face and another four on the rear face; on each of the faces there are two linear actuators (9) near the ends and two linear actuators (9) almost in the center, one being on each side of the guides (2). The tip of the rod of each of the linear actuators (9) is connected to rectangular supports (10) by means of a cylindrical axis (12) that extends through the support (10) and protrudes on both sides to the width of said support (10), one part being inside the container (1) and the other part being outside connected to the rod of the linear actuators (9). The supports (10) are inside rectangular cavities (11) located on the front and rear faces of the container (1) aligned with each of the linear actuators (9).The rectangular cavities (11) have a greater vertical dimension than the supports (10), such that it serves as a guide for said supports (10) to move vertically within the cavities (11) when the linear actuators (9) are activated.
[0083] Four platforms (13) with rigid mesh in the center are placed inside the container (1) as a floor, leaving a platform (13) in each division generated by the curtains (6); the platforms (13) are joined to the axes (12) of the support (10) by their edges in such a way that it is suspended and has vertical linear movement when the linear actuators (9) are activated and move the supports (10), to generate a height difference between each of the platforms (13) and to be able to easily separate the young from the animals contained in the container (1). The platforms (13) are covered with shavings so that the animals can be contained more comfortably and safely; the rigid mesh of the platforms (13) has the purpose of allowing the dirty shavings and the excrements of the contained animals to fall to the bottom of the container.
[0084] A negative pressure module (14) is attached to one of the ends of the base (8) projecting upwards to at least the height where the platforms are located.
[0085] (13) in its lowest position. The negative pressure module
[0086] (14) is a rectangular prismatic structure that is hollow inside and has a hollow prismatic projection on its upper part where a negative pressure mechanism (17) is placed, which can be a vacuum cleaner, extraction fan or a vacuum pump.
[0087] An opening (18) passes through the face of the negative pressure module (14) and the face of the container (1) that are close to each other, such that there is communication between the lower part of the container (1) and the internal part of the negative pressure module (14); said opening (18) is at the level of the floor of the container (1), this configuration allows that when activating the negative pressure mechanism (17) it sucks liquids and solid material such as shavings and excrement of the animals contained in the container (1) that is on the floor, to be introduced into a liquid waste container (15) that is housed inside the negative pressure module (14) and is below the opening (18); a solid waste container (16) whose surface has a plurality of holes, is placed inside the liquid waste container (15);This configuration allows the retention of solid material such as shavings and animal excrement contained in the container (1) located on the floor, and allows liquids to pass through to be stored in the liquid waste container (15). The liquid waste container (15) and the solid waste container (16) are removable, in order to throw away the solid and liquid waste contained in them to be later used once more when cleaning the container.
[0088] A soap and water injection module (19) is attached to the end of the base (8) opposite to where the negative pressure module (14) is located, projecting upwards to at least the height where the platforms (13) are located in their lowest position. The soap and water injection module (19) is a rectangular prismatic structure that is hollow inside and has a rounded rectangular prismatic projection that is hollow inside at its top. A soap and water tank (20) is located inside the soap and water injection module (19) which has a filling mouth on its surface, preferably on the top.
[0089] (21) that allows the introduction of water and soap that will be used to wash the internal floor of the container (1) when required; a hydraulic pump (22) is connected to the tank (20) and in turn is connected to a cylindrical duct (23) which is connected by means of an internal pipe (not illustrated) to a plurality of water cannons (24) that are located inside the container (1) on the face next to the water and soap injection module (19) at the bottom, this configuration allows that when the hydraulic pump is activated
[0090] (22) The soapy water comes out under pressure through the plurality of water cannons (24) cleaning the floor of the container (1) and projecting the dirt towards the opening (18) to be contained by the waste tank (15) and the strainer container (1).
[0091] An air flow generating mechanism (25) is placed inside the water and fertilizer injection module (19) on a support (26) and is connected to a variable volume duct (27) whose outlet is placed in a hole (not illustrated) in the wall of the projection of the water and soap injection module (19) that is removed from the container (1) •
[0092] A chip container (28) is a rectangular prismatic structure that is hollow inside and has a rounded rectangular prismatic protrusion at its bottom, hollow inside, which is assembled with the upper part of the water and soap injection module (19); the rounded rectangular prismatic protrusion is located above the height of the platforms (13) in its lowest position; an opening (29) is placed in the wall of the rounded rectangular prismatic protrusion and on the face of the container (1) next to the chip container (28), this configuration allows the chip contained in said container (28) to exit and be placed on the platforms (13);an opening (not illustrated) is located in the wall of the rounded rectangular prismatic projection next to the water and soap injection module (19) in the same direction as the hole (not illustrated) in the wall of the projection of the water and soap injection module (19) where the outlet of the variable volume duct (27) is, which allows the air generated by the air flow generating mechanism (25) to distribute the shavings on the surface of the four platforms (13) evenly, so that the animals contained in the container (1) can be more comfortable.;
[0093] A gate (30) is placed over the opening (29) to prevent the contained animals from escaping when shavings are not being distributed. The gate (30) has guides (36) arranged vertically in the center in such a way that they coincide with the guide (2) on the inner face of the container (1).
[0094] A motor (31) is placed on the outer side face of the container (1), at the height of the gate (30) and is internally connected to it by means of a gear train (not illustrated) placed inside the wall of the container (1) between the motor (31) and the gate (30); in such a way that when the motor (31) is activated it opens the gate (30) for the passage of the shavings and closes it when the distribution of the shavings stops, preventing the escape of the animals contained in the container (1).
[0095] The negative pressure module (14), water and fertilizer injection module (19) and the chip container (28) each have an opening (32) to access the internal components and in the case of the chip container, to be able to fill it with the material that is distributed on the surface of the platforms (13); in each opening (32) a cover (33) is placed that has a handle (34) for its manipulation; said cover (33) can be removable or fixed by means of hinges (not illustrated).
[0096] The linear actuators (9), the negative pressure mechanism (17), the hydraulic pump (22), the air flow generating mechanism (25), and the motor (31) are internally connected to the microcontroller (not illustrated) of the second control module (not illustrated) housed inside the base (8), to program its activation by means of an intelligent device that connects to the wireless communication unit (not illustrated) of the same control module.
[0097] A second charging port (35) which is preferably a USB type C connector is placed on the surface of any of the faces of the water and soap injection module (19), the negative pressure module (14) or the base (8); the second charging port (35) is connected to the power supply (not illustrated) of the second control module (not illustrated) that is in the base (8) in order to charge it and thus energize the microcontroller (not illustrated), the wireless communication unit (not illustrated), the linear actuators (9), the negative pressure mechanism (17), the hydraulic pump (22), the air flow generating mechanism (25) and the motor (31), for its activation and operation.
[0098] The water and soap injection module (19), the negative pressure module (14) and the base (8) can be joined in a single structure with the same characteristics as those described above. The wireless communication units (not illustrated) can be by means of Bluetooth, WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) or UWB (Ultra Wide Band) and are connected to each other. The power supplies (not illustrated) that are located inside the cover (3) and in the base (8) in the first and second control modules (not illustrated), are preferably a rechargeable battery.
[0099] A switch (not shown) is installed on the surface of any of the faces of the water and fertilizer injection module (19), the negative pressure module (14) or the base (8), and is connected to the power supplies (not shown) of the first and second control modules (not shown); said switch is configured to energize or de-energize the device to perform behavioral and physiological tests.
