Abstract

This disclosure provides methods, components, devices and systems for power control mechanism for audio packet transmissions via a broadcast isochronous stream (BIS). Some aspects more specifically relate to implementing the power control mechanism for the BIS. In some implementations, a wireless audio source device may perform interference measurements on the channels available for communications via the BIS. Based on a quantity of channels with an interference level below an interference level threshold, a wireless audio source device may select a transmission power level accordingly. In some other implementations, the wireless audio source device may use the selected transmission power as a baseline transmission power level and adjust the baseline transmission power level on a per channel basis. Therefore, a wireless audio source device may be capable of adjusting the transmission power level for BIS communication, to reduce the level of power consumption, increase the communication reliability, or any combination thereof.

[0021] The following description is directed to some particular examples for the purposes of describing innovative aspects of this disclosure. However, a person having ordinary skill in the art will readily recognize that the teachings herein can be applied in a multitude of different ways. Some or all of the described examples may be implemented in any device, system or network that is capable of transmitting and receiving radio frequency (RF) signals according to one or more of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards, the IEEE 802.15 standards, the  standards as defined by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) , or the Long Term Evolution (LTE) , 3G, 4G or 5G (New Radio (NR) ) standards promulgated by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , among others. The described examples can be implemented in any device, system or network that is capable of transmitting and receiving RF signals according to one or more of the following technologies or techniques: code division multiple access (CDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA) , single-carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) , spatial division multiple access (SDMA) , rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) , multi-user shared access (MUSA) , single-user (SU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-user (MU) -MIMO (MU-MIMO) . The described examples also can be implemented using other wireless communication protocols or RF signals suitable for use in one or more of a wireless personal area network (WPAN) , a wireless local area network (WLAN) , a wireless wide area network (WWAN) , a wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) , or an internet of things (IOT) network.

[0022] Various aspects relate generally to wireless communications, including Bluetooth communications between wireless audio devices. Some aspects more  specifically relate to power control for audio packet transmissions via a broadcast isochronous stream (BIS) . In some implementations, a BIS is used to transmit audio packets from a wireless audio source device to multiple wireless audio sink devices simultaneously. In some aspects, because the quantity of wireless audio sink devices may be relatively large, the wireless audio source device may refrain from establishing a connection with each individual wireless audio sink device. In such aspects, the wireless audio sink devices may lack a communication link via which to transmit or provide information to the wireless audio source device. Accordingly, the wireless audio source device may be unable to control or adjust the transmission power level of transmissions via the BIS based on feedback from the wireless audio sink devices. Due to such a lack of feedback-based control over the transmission power level of BIS communication, a wireless communications system may experience an increase in power consumption in channels with low levels of interference, a decrease in reliability in channels with high levels of interference, or both.

[0023] In other words, an originally selected transmission power level for a BIS may be relatively too high if an interference level is relatively low (resulting in an unnecessarily high power consumption cost) and may be relatively too low if the interference level is relatively high (resulting in a higher likelihood for communication errors) , and some systems may lack an efficient mechanism according to which the wireless audio source device is able to update (such as change, adjust, increase, or decrease) the originally selected transmission power level. As described herein, a transmission power level that is too high may be understood as any transmission power that is above a level at which successful communication is sufficiently likely to occur (such as above a first threshold likeliness for successful communication) . Further, a transmission power that is too low may be understood as any transmission power that is below a level at which successful communication is likely to occur (such as below a second threshold likeliness for successful communication, which may be the same as or different from the first threshold likeliness for successful communication) .

[0024] Therefore, in some implementations of the present disclosure, a wireless audio source device may use a transmission power level control mechanism when using (such as communicating via) a BIS to (dynamically or semi-persistently) update, adjust, or change a transmission power level for the BIS. For example, the wireless audio  source device may perform interference measurements on a set of channels available for (such as configured or allocated for) communications via the BIS to determine a respective interference level for each respective channel. Based on a quantity of channels with an interference level below an interference level threshold, the wireless audio source device may select a transmission power level to be used across the channels available for communications via the BIS. In other words, the wireless audio source device may select a transmission power level for BIS transmissions based on a quantity of “low interference” channels of the set of channels that are configured or allocated for BIS communication, with a “low interference” channel being a channel associated with an interference level below the interference level threshold. In some other implementations, the wireless audio source device may use the selected transmission power (as selected based on the quantity of low interference” channels) as a baseline transmission power level and adjust the baseline transmission power level on a per channel basis. In such implementations, an actual transmission power level for a particular channel may be an incremented or decremented version of the baseline transmission power level based on an interference measurement for that particular channel. Further, if a selected (actual) transmission power level for a channel is above a maximum transmission power level, the wireless audio source device may instead use the maximum transmission power level. As such, a wireless audio source device may be capable of dynamically adjusting the transmission power level for BIS communication, resulting in a reduction of power consumption, a greater communication reliability when transmitting audio packets via a BIS, or both.

[0025] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. In some implementations, by adjusting the transmission power level when using BIS based on channel interference measurements and one or more thresholds, the described techniques can be used to reduce the level of power consumption for a wireless audio source and increase the communication reliability. For example, the wireless audio source device may reduce the power consumption of transmitting audio packets via the BIS when the quantity of channels with an interference level below an interference level threshold is below a threshold quantity of channels (which may be associated with low interference conditions) . In some aspects, the wireless audio device may further reduce  the power consumption of transmitting the audio packets via the BIS by adjusting the transmission power level of the respective channels used for the BIS, as the wireless audio device may opportunistically use a relatively lower transmission power level when interference is relatively lower and may selectively ramp up (such as increase) the transmission power level when interference is relatively higher. Further, in some other aspects, the wireless audio device may adjust the transmission power level to increase the communication reliability.

[0026] For example, if the interference level of a respective channel is relatively high, using a relatively higher transmission power level may allow for more reliable communications via the respective channel. Thus, by dynamically adjusting the transmission power level for a set of channels used for a BIS and, in some implementations, further adjusting the transmission power level for each respective channel, the described techniques may be implemented to realize a reduction of power consumption, greater communication reliability when transmitting audio packets via a BIS, or both, among other benefits. Moreover, in accordance with such a reduction in power consumption and a greater communication reliability, the described techniques may be implemented to realize greater battery life, higher data rates, greater system capacity, lower latency, less audio glitching, and improved user experience.

[0027] Figure 1 shows a pictorial diagram of an example wireless communication network 100. In some implementations, the wireless communication network 100 may include or refer to a wireless personal area network (PAN) , a wireless local area network (WLAN) , or a Wi-Fi network configured in accordance with various aspects described herein. The wireless communication network 100 may include an access point (AP) 105 serving an example coverage area 108, devices 110 (which may be referred to as source devices or central devices) , and paired devices 115 (which may be referred to as sink devices or peripheral devices) implementing WLAN communications (such as Wi-Fi communications) and / or Bluetooth communications. For example, devices 110 may include cell phones, user equipment (UEs) , wireless stations (STAs) , mobile stations, personal digital assistant (PDAs) , other handheld devices, netbooks, notebook computers, tablet computers, laptops, or some other suitable terminology. Paired devices 115 may include Bluetooth-enabled devices capable of pairing with other Bluetooth-enabled devices (such as devices 110) , which may include wireless audio  devices (such as headsets, earbuds, speakers, earpieces, headphones) , display devices (such as TVs, computer monitors) , microphones, meters, and / or valves.

[0028] Bluetooth communications may refer to a short-range communication protocol and may be used to connect and exchange information between devices 110 and paired devices 115 (such as between mobile phones, computers, digital cameras, wireless headsets, speakers, keyboards, mice or other input peripherals, and similar devices) . Bluetooth systems (such as aspects of wireless communication network 100) may be organized using a central-peripheral relationship employing a time-division duplex protocol having, for example, defined time slots of 625 mu seconds, in which transmission alternates between the central device (such as a device 110) and one or more peripheral devices (such as paired devices 115) . In some implementations, a device 110 may generally refer to a central device, and a paired device 115 may refer to a peripheral device in the wireless communication network 100. As such, in some implementations, a device may be referred to as either a device 110 or a paired device 115 based on the Bluetooth role configuration of the device. That is, designation of a device as either a device 110 or a paired device 115 may not necessarily indicate a distinction in device capability, but rather may refer to or indicate roles held by the device in the wireless communication network 100. Generally, a device 110 may refer to a wireless communication device capable of wirelessly exchanging data signals with another device (such as a paired device 115) , and a paired device 115 may refer to a device operating in a peripheral role, or to a short-range wireless communication device capable of exchanging data signals with the device 110 (such as using Bluetooth communication protocols) .

[0029] A Bluetooth-enabled device may be compatible with certain Bluetooth profiles to use desired services. A Bluetooth profile may refer to a specification regarding an aspect of Bluetooth-based wireless communications between devices. That is, a profile specification may refer to a set of instructions for using the Bluetooth protocol stack in a certain way, and may include information such as suggested user interface formats and / or particular options and parameters at each layer of the Bluetooth protocol stack. For example, a Bluetooth specification may include various profiles that define the behavior associated with each communication endpoint to implement a specific use case. Profiles may thus generally be defined according to a protocol stack  that promotes and allows interoperability between endpoint devices from different manufacturers through enabling applications to discover and use services that other nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices may be offering. The Bluetooth specification defines device role pairs (such as roles for a device 110 and a paired device 115) that together form a single use case called a profile (such as for communications between the device 110 and the paired device 115) . One example profile defined in the Bluetooth specification is the Handsfree Profile (HFP) for voice telephony, in which one device (such as a device 110) implements an Audio Gateway (AG) role and the other device (such as a paired device 115) implements a Handsfree (HF) device role. Another example is the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) for high-quality audio streaming, in which one device (such as device 110) implements an audio source device (SRC) role and another device (such as paired device 115) implements an audio sink device (SNK) role.

[0030] For a commercial Bluetooth-enabled device that implements one role in a profile to function properly, another device that implements the corresponding role may be present within the radio range of the first device. For example, in order for an HF device such as a Bluetooth headset to function according to the Handsfree Profile, a device implementing the AG role (such as a cell phone) may have to be present within radio range. Likewise, in order to stream high-quality mono or stereo audio according to the A2DP, a device implementing the SNK role (such as Bluetooth headphones or Bluetooth speakers) may have to be within radio range of a device implementing the SRC role (such as a stereo music player) .

[0031] The Bluetooth specification defines a layered data transport architecture and various protocols and procedures to handle data communicated between two devices that implement a particular profile use case. For example, various logical links are available to support different application data transport requirements, with each logical link associated with a logical transport having certain characteristics (such as flow control, acknowledgement mechanisms, repeat mechanisms, sequence numbering, and / or scheduling behavior. The Bluetooth protocol stack may be split in two parts: a controller stack including the timing critical radio interface, and a host stack handling high level data. The controller stack may be generally implemented in a low cost silicon device including one or more Bluetooth radios and one or more microprocessors.  The controller stack may be responsible for setting up connection links 125 such as asynchronous connection-less (ACL) links, (or ACL connections) , synchronous connection orientated (SCO) links (or SCO connections) , extended synchronous connection-oriented (eSCO) links (or eSCO connections) , and / or other logical transport channel links.

[0032] In some implementations, the controller stack may implement link management protocol (LMP) functions and / or low energy link layer (LELL) functions. The host stack may be generally implemented as part of an operating system, or as an installable package on top of an operating system. The host stack may be responsible for logical link control and adaptation protocol (L2CAP) functions, Bluetooth network encapsulation protocol (BNEP) functions, and / or service discovery protocol (SDP) functions. In some implementations, the controller stack and the host stack may communicate via a host controller interface (HCI) . In some other implementations, (such as for integrated devices such as Bluetooth headsets) , the host stack and controller stack may be run on the same microprocessor to reduce mass production costs. For such host-less systems, the HCI may be optional, and may be implemented as an internal software interface.

[0033] A connection link 125 may be established between two Bluetooth-enabled devices (such as between a device 110 and a paired device 115) and may provide for communications or services (such as according to some Bluetooth profile) . For example, a Bluetooth connection may be an eSCO connection for voice call (such as which may allow for retransmission) and / or an ACL connection for music streaming (such as A2DP) , among other examples. For example, eSCO packets may be transmitted in predetermined time slots (such as 6 Bluetooth slots each for eSCO) . The regular interval between the eSCO packets may be specified when the Bluetooth link is established. The eSCO packets to / from a specific peripheral device (such as a paired device 115) are acknowledged, and may be retransmitted if not acknowledged during a retransmission window. In addition, audio may be streamed between a device 110 and a paired device 115 using an ACL connection (A2DP profile) . In some implementations, the ACL connection may occupy 1, 3, or 5 Bluetooth slots for data or voice. Other Bluetooth profiles supported by Bluetooth-enabled devices may include Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) (such as providing considerably reduced power consumption and cost  while maintaining a similar communication range) and / or human interface device profile (HID) (such as providing low latency links with low power requirements) .

[0034] A device may, in some implementations, be capable of both Bluetooth and WLAN communications. For example, WLAN and Bluetooth components may be co-located within a device, such that the device may be capable of communicating according to both Bluetooth and WLAN communication protocols, as each technology may offer different benefits or may improve user experience in different conditions. In some implementations, Bluetooth and WLAN communications may share a same medium, such as the same unlicensed frequency medium. In such examples, a device 110 may support WLAN communications via AP 105 (such as over communication links 120) . The AP 105 and the associated devices 110 may represent a basic service set (BSS) or an extended service set (ESS) . The various devices 110 in the network may be able to communicate with one another through the AP 105. In some implementations, the AP 105 may be associated with a coverage area, which may represent a basic service area (BSA) .

[0035] Devices 110 and APs 105 may communicate according to the WLAN radio and baseband protocol for physical and MAC layers from IEEE 802.11 and versions including, but not limited to, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ad, 802.11ah, 802.11ay, 802.11ax, 802.11az, 802.11ba, 802.11bd, 802.11be, 802.11bf, and 802.11bn. In some other implementations, peer-to-peer connections or ad hoc networks may be implemented within the wireless communication network 100, and devices may communicate with each other via communication links 120 (such as Wi-Fi Direct connections, Wi-Fi Tunneled Direct Link Setup (TDLS) links, peer-to-peer communication links, other peer or group connections) . AP 105 may be coupled to a network, such as the Internet, and may enable a device 110 to communicate via the network (or communicate with other devices 110 coupled to the AP 105) . A device 110 may communicate with a network device bi-directionally. For example, in a WLAN, a device 110 may communicate with an associated AP 105 via downlink (such as the communication link from the AP 105 to the device110) and uplink (such as the communication link from the device 110 to the AP 105) .

[0036] In some implementations, content, media, and / or audio exchanged between a device 110 and a paired device 115 may originate from a WLAN. For example, in some  implementations, device 110 may receive audio from an AP 105 (such as via WLAN communications) , and the device 110 may relay or pass the audio to the paired device 115 (such as via Bluetooth communications) . In some implementations, certain types of Bluetooth communications (such as such as high quality or high definition (HD) Bluetooth) may require enhanced quality of service. In some implementations, delay-sensitive Bluetooth traffic may have higher priority than WLAN traffic.

[0037] In some implementations, a BIS may be used to transmit audio packets from a wireless audio source device (such as a device 110) to one or multiple wireless audio sink devices (such as one or multiple paired devices 115) . For example, a wireless audio source device may broadcast, via the BIS, one or more audio packets to multiple wireless audio sink devices simultaneously. In some systems, the quantity of wireless audio sink devices that the wireless audio source device may broadcast the one or more audio packets to may be relatively large, and the wireless audio source device may refrain from establishing communication links 120 with the wireless audio sink devices. Further, the wireless audio source device may use a same transmission power level to transmit the one or more audio packets to the wireless audio sink devices via the BIS using one or more communication channels (such as channels or wireless communication channels, with a channel referring to a discrete portion of frequency or bandwidth, such as a 1 megahertz (MHz) portion of a 2 MHz portion) . However, due to the lack of a communication link 120 between a respective wireless audio sink device and the wireless audio source device, the wireless audio sink device may be unable to feedback information (such as link quality information) to the wireless audio source device. For example, a wireless audio sink device may receive one or more audio packets on a respective channel that is experiencing a level of interference such that the wireless audio sink device may be unable to successfully decode the one or more audio packets from the wireless audio source device.

[0038] In such examples, the transmission power level that the wireless audio source device may be using to transmit the one or more audio packets to the wireless audio sink device via the BIS may be insufficient. In some systems, however, the wireless audio source device may be unable to adapt the transmission power level due to a lack of a transmission power control mechanism for a BIS. Therefore, to ensure that each wireless audio sink device is capable of receiving and decoding the one or more  audio packets, the wireless audio source device may use the same transmission power level for each channel. In a noisy environment (such as an environment with a high level of interference) a wireless audio device may use a relatively high transmission power level, resulting in a relatively high level of power consumption, as a lower transmission power level may be insufficient for at least some channels and result in poor audio quality for at least some wireless audio sink devices.

[0039] In other words, in some systems, the wireless audio source device may select a relatively high transmission power level for BIS communication to err toward greater communication reliability at the expense of power consumption. Alternatively, in some other systems, the wireless audio source device may select a relatively low transmission power level for BIS communication to err toward lower power consumption at the expense of lower communication reliability. In any event, in such systems, a lack of a dynamic or flexible power control mechanism for BIS communication may result in either high power consumption or poor communication reliability, if not both, over time.

[0040] In some implementations of the present disclosure, a wireless audio source device may implement a transmission power control mechanism to (dynamically or semi-persistently) adjust a transmission power level that the wireless audio source device uses to transmit one or more audio packets via a BIS. For example, the wireless audio source device may perform a bad channel assessment (BCA) to scan the interference of an environment (such as the coverage area 108) . The wireless audio source device may receive (such as measure, calculate, identify, obtain, or otherwise ascertain) the interference levels and / or signal strengths of each respective channel from the BCA and use the results of the BCA to tune or adjust the transmission power level for the BIS (based on the interference levels of the channels) . For example, the wireless audio source device may determine a baseline transmission power level based on a quantity of channels with a low interference level (such as an interference level that is less than or equal to an interference level threshold) . Further, the wireless audio source device may adjust the transmission power level per channel based on the interference level of each respective channel. As such, the transmission power level for a respective channel may be incremented or decremented from the baseline transmission power level to increase the reliability of each channel and / or decrease the overall power  consumption of the wireless audio source device, as suitable given the specific interference level at that respective channel.

[0041] Figure 2 shows an example of a wireless communication network 200 that supports power control mechanism for audio packet transmissions via a BIS in accordance with one or more aspects described herein. The wireless communication network 200 may implement or be implemented to realize one or more aspects of the wireless communication network 100. For example, the wireless communication network 200 illustrates communication between a wireless audio device 205 (such as a wireless audio device 205-a and / or a wireless audio device 205-b) , which may be an example of a device 110 as illustrated by and described with reference to Figure 1 and one or more wireless audio devices 210 (such as a wireless audio device 210-a, a wireless audio device 210-b, a wireless audio device 210-c) , which may be examples of paired devices 115 as illustrated by and described with reference to Figure 1. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may be a central device (such as a phone) , an initiator, a source device, or a first host and initiating layer and the one or more wireless audio devices 210 may be peripheral devices (such as earbuds, wireless headsets, or speakers) , an acceptor, a sink device, or a second host and responding layer.

[0042] In some implementations of the wireless communication network 200, a wireless audio device 205 (such as the wireless audio device 205-a or the wireless audio device 205-b) may communicate with one or more wireless audio devices 210 (such as the wireless audio device 210-a, the wireless audio device 210-b, the wireless audio device 210-c, or any combination thereof) . In some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may communicate with one or more wireless audio devices 210 via a BIS 215. The BIS 215 may be used to broadcast audio (such as one or more audio packets) over Bluetooth low energy (LE) , which may be an example of a wireless PAN. Further the wireless audio device 205 may broadcast the audio to the one or more wireless audio devices 210 via the BIS 215, the wireless audio device 205 and each respective wireless audio device of the one or more wireless audio devices 210 may refrain from establishing communication links 120 (such as Bluetooth links) . In other words, a source device (such as the wireless audio device 205) may refrain from connecting directly with each sink device (such as the wireless audio device 210-a, the wireless  audio device 210-b, the wireless audio device 210-c, or any combination thereof) that the source device may communicate with vis the BIS 215.

[0043] As such, the one or more wireless audio devices 210 may be unable to request the wireless audio device 205 to adjust the transmission power level being used for the audio broadcast via the BIS 215 based on a reception quality observed by the respective one or more wireless audio devices 210. Further, in some systems, the wireless audio device 205 may be unable to adjust the transmission power level of a BIS 215 due to a lack of a power control mechanism when using the BIS 215. As such, in some scenarios of such systems, the wireless audio device 205 may use a relatively high transmission power level (such as a maximum transmission power level or a transmission power level that is otherwise larger than necessary, such as larger than necessary to achieve a threshold target likelihood for successful communication) resulting in an increase in power consumption (such as an unnecessarily large power consumption) . Alternatively, in some other scenarios of such systems, the wireless audio device 205 may use a relatively low transmission power level (such as a minimum transmission power level or a transmission power level that is otherwise lower than necessary, such as lower than necessary to achieve a threshold target likelihood for successful communication) resulting in a decrease in audio quality being transmitted via the BIS 215. Further, such audio quality degradation may increase in noisy environments (such as environments with relatively high levels of interference) .

[0044] Additionally, or alternatively, due to RF regulatory requirements, Bluetooth devices (such as the wireless audio device 205-a or the wireless audio device 205-b) may use at least 15 channels regardless of the environment conditions. As such, at least a portion of (such as a subset of) the channels may have some level of interference. Therefore, if the wireless audio device 205 uses a relatively low transmission power level in noisy environments, audio packets transmitted via the BIS 215 may be relatively likely to experience interference resulting in a low audio quality of the BIS 215. Further, the wireless audio device 205 may be unable to adapt the transmission power level being used to increase the audio quality of the BIS 215, therefore causing the effectiveness and reliability of the wireless communication network 200 to decrease.

[0045] Therefore, to enable the wireless audio device 205 to adapt the transmission power level when transmitting audio packets via the BIS 215, the techniques described  herein describe example implementations of a power control mechanism for audio packet transmissions via the BIS 215. For example, the techniques described herein may enable the wireless audio device 205 to tune or adjust (such as dynamically or semi-persistently increase or decrease) the transmission power level of the BIS 215 based on interference levels. To tune the transmission power level, the wireless audio device 205 may perform a BCA periodically (or dynamically, or semi-persistently) to scan the interference of an environment (such as a surrounding environment of the wireless audio device 205) . As part of the BCA, the wireless audio device 205 may perform a set of signal strength measurements across a set of channels available for (such as allocated for or configured for) communications via the BIS 215 to detect interference. For example, the wireless audio device 205 may perform a signal strength measurement, which may be a reference signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement, to detect interference. That is, the wireless audio device 205 may not expect to receive signals on a channel allocated or configured for BIS communication so, in scenarios in which the wireless audio device 205 detects some signal strength on a channel, there may be some form of interference on the channel.

[0046] As such, the wireless audio device 205 may perform a signal strength measurement for each respective channel of the set of channels via the BCA. From the results of the BCA, the wireless audio device 205 may receive (such as measure, obtain, calculate, identify, select, or otherwise ascertain) an indication of the interference levels of each channel based on a signal strength measurement of each channel to be used via the BIS 215. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may divide such results into a transmission power level table, as shown in Table 1 below, that illustrates a corresponding transmission power level based on the results of the BCA.

[0047] Table 1

[0048] As illustrated in Table 1, the interference level may be associated with a quantity of channels available for (such as allocated for or configured for) communications via the BIS 215 that have a low level of interference. That is, in the context of the example illustrated in Table 1, a channel may be referred to or understood as an “available channel” based on a signal strength measurement (such as the RSSI measurement) of that channel being lower than or equal to a signal strength threshold (such as an RSSI threshold) . In other words, of the set of channels allocated or configured for communications via the BIS 215, a subset may be understood as “available” or “low interference” channels based on each respective channel of the subset having a respective signal strength measurement lower than or equal to the signal strength threshold. That is, a low RSSI on a channel that does not expect to receive any signals may indicate a low level of interference. As such, a high RSSI on a channel that does not expect to receive any signals may indicate a relatively high level of interference as the channel is receiving potentially interfering signals and measuring a relatively high signal strength accordingly. Therefore, the wireless audio device 205 (such as the wireless audio source device) may select a transmission power level for the BIS 215 based on the quantity of channels with signal strength measurements that satisfy (are less than or equal to) the signal strength measurement threshold. Further, the wireless audio device 205 may select the transmission power level (such as a transmission power level index) based on a comparison between the quantity of channels and a set of channel quality ranges that each correspond to a different transmission power level.

[0049] In some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may select a first transmission level (such as the initial transmission power level) based on a first channel quality range (such as no fewer than 15 available channels) . In some other implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may select a second transmission power level (such as the initial transmission power level + 1) that is greater than the first transmission power level. Further, the second transmission power level may be based on second channel quality range (such as between 10 and 15 available channels) that is lower than the first channel quality range. In another implementation, the wireless audio device 205 may select a third transmission power level (such as the initial  transmission power level + 2) that is greater than the first transmission power level and the second transmission power level. Moreover, the third transmission power level may be based on a third channel quality range (such as between 5 and 10 available channels) that is lower than the second channel quality range. Additionally, or alternatively, the wireless audio device 205 may select a fourth transmission power level (such as the maximum transmission power level) that is greater than the first transmission power level, the second transmission power level, and the third transmission power level. The fourth transmission power level may be based on a fourth channel quality range (such as less than 5 available channels) that is lower than the third channel quality range.

[0050] Therefore, the wireless audio device 205 may select and use a respective transmission power level in accordance with the quantity of channels with signal strength measurements that satisfy the signal strength measurement threshold being in the first channel quality range, the second channel quality range, the third channel quality range, or the fourth channel quality range. Further, although the initial transmission power is defined in the example of Table 1 as a relatively lowest transmission power (such that other transmission powers are increments of the initial transmission power) , the “initial” transmission power may be any relative transmission power, such as the relatively lowest transmission power, a middle (such as average or median) transmission power, or a relatively highest transmission power (such that other transmission powers could be increments or decrements of the initial transmission power) .

[0051] Further, the techniques described herein may enable the wireless audio device 205 to adjust the transmission power level per channel, which may enable the wireless audio device 205 to align audio quality across a set of channels (because different channels may have different levels of interference) . For example, each respective channel may be associated with different interference levels resulting in the transmission quality differences between the channels used for the BIS 215. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may adjust (such as adapt or change) the transmission power level per channel (such as per channel for a set of channels that are overlapped with high interference levels, such as relatively high or above an interference level threshold) .

[0052] Therefore, in some implementations, the wireless audio device 205 may be capable of improving the transmission quality of the channels associated with high interference levels while refraining from tuning up or adjusting (such as increasing) the transmission power level of the channels associated with low interference levels. The wireless audio device 205 may adjust the transmission power level from the transmission level set based on the quantity of channels with signal strength measurements that satisfy the signal strength measurement threshold, as described herein, including with reference to Table 1. In some implementations, the transmission power level set using Table 1 may be referred to as a base transmission power level or a baseline transmission power level. The wireless audio device 205 may adjust a transmission power level down for a channel associated with a relatively low interference level to increase power savings and / or may adjust a transmission power level up for a channel associated with a relatively high interference level to increase a transmission quality. In other words, the wireless audio device 205 may further adjust the baseline transmission power level for each respective channel based on the signal strength measurement (such as RSSI measurement) of that respective channel, with an example of such operation shown in Table 2 below.

[0053] Table 2

[0054] As shown above in Table 2, the wireless audio device 205 may select a transmission power level for a respective channel based on the respective interference level of the respective channel. For example, the wireless audio device 205 may select a respective transmission power level for each respective channel of a subset of channels of the set of channels used for the BIS 215 based on a respective signal strength measurement associated with the respective channel. Thus, the wireless audio  device 205 may transmit the one or more audio packets via the subset of channels on the BIS 215 to the one or more wireless audio devices 210 in accordance with the respective transmission power level selected for each respective channel of the subset of channels.

[0055] In some implementations, the respective transmission power level of a respective channel may be an incremented or decremented version of the baseline transmission power level (such as the base transmission power level, which may alternatively be referred to as a default, starting, initial, or fallback transmission power level) that is determined based on the quantity of channels used for the BIS 215 that satisfy the signal strength measurement threshold described herein. For example, in some implementations, an interference level (such as signal strength or RSSI measurement) of a respective channel may be below a threshold interference level. As such, the respective transmission power level of the respective channel may be a decremented version of the baseline transmission power level. That is, the respective channel may be associated with a relatively low interference level and the wireless audio device 205 may use a lower transmission power level to further reduce the level of power consumption. In some other implementations, the interference level of a respective channel may be above the threshold interference level and the respective transmission power level of the respective channel may be an incremented version of the baseline transmission power level.

[0056] Further, the wireless audio device 205 may select the respective transmission power level for a respective channel may be based on the respective signal strength measurement associated with the respective channel being in a range of signal strength measurements (such as interference levels or RSSI levels) of a set of signal strength measurements ranges. In some implementations, each respective range of signal strength measurements of the set of signal strength measurement ranges may be associated with a respective transmission power level that are incremented or decremented versions of the baseline transmission power level. For example, the wireless audio device 205 may select the respective transmission level for a respective channel based on the respective signal strength measurement of the respective channel being in a first range of signal strength measurements, a second range of signal strength measurements, a third range of signal strength measurements, or a fourth range of signal  strength measurements. Example ranges of signal strength measurements are provided in the example illustrated in Table 2, and other or different ranges of signal strength measurements are within the scope of the present disclosure.

[0057] In some implementations, the transmission power level for a range of signal strength measurements or a transmission power level selected by the wireless audio device 205 for a respective channel may be above a maximum transmission power level of the wireless communication network 200. That is, the wireless audio device 205 may select a respective transmission power level that is above the maximum transmission power level that the wireless audio device 205 is capable of using for the BIS 215. Additionally, or alternatively, the wireless audio device 205 may be capable of using the respective transmission power level but the one or more wireless audio devices 210 are incapable of receiving the one or more audio packets via the BIS 215 if the wireless audio device 205 uses the respective transmission power level. Therefore, when the wireless audio device 205 selects a respective transmission power level that is above the maximum transmission power level, the wireless audio device 205 may instead use the maximum transmission power level.

[0058] Accordingly, the wireless audio device 205 may adjust the transmission power level for respective channels to improve the reliability and power consumption of transmitting the one or more audio packets via the BIS 215. For example, the wireless audio device 205 may refrain from adjusting the transmission power level for some channels based on the respective channels being associated with relatively low interference levels. That is, the wireless audio device 205 may adjust the transmission power level for channels associated with relatively high interference levels. Therefore, some channels may use relatively high transmission power levels while others may use relatively lower transmission power levels based on the interference level of the respective channel.

[0059] In such examples, the wireless audio device 205 may be able to reduce the power consumption of the audio packet transmissions by having different channels use different transmission power levels opposed to the same transmission power level. In some implementations, to transmit the audio packets, the wireless audio device 205 may transmit one or more audio packets via the BIS 215 across a subset of channels of the set of channels available for the BIS 215 in accordance with a channel hopping  procedure. The channel hopping procedure may ensure that the wireless audio device 205 transmits at least one audio packet via each channel of a subset of channels in accordance with a selected respective transmission power level as described herein.

[0060] Therefore, the wireless communication network 200 may be relatively more reliable (and may more efficiently balance power consumption and communication reliability) as a result of the wireless audio device 205 adjusting the transmission power level for all the channels and / or a subset of channels individually. Thus, the wireless communication network 200 may experience improvements based on the techniques described herein that provide the wireless audio device 205 a mechanism to adjust the transmission power level for a set of channels, per channel, or both. For example, the transmission power level adjustment mechanism for the BIS 215 may provide a reduction in power consumption for clean environments (such as low interference environments) . In another example, the transmission power level adjustment mechanism for the BIS 215 may provide an increase in audio quality to ensure the audio quality of the one or more audio packets transmitted via the BIS 215 is adequate in noisy environments. Further descriptions of the techniques described herein describing the transmission power level adjustment mechanism for the BIS 215 may be described elsewhere herein, including with reference to Figure 3.

[0061] Figure 3 shows an example of a process flow 300 that supports power control mechanism for audio packet transmissions via a BIS in accordance with one or more aspects described herein. In some implementations, the process flow 300 may implement or be implemented by the wireless communication network 100 and / or the wireless communication network 200. For example, the process flow 300 may illustrate communication between a wireless audio device 305, which may be an example of a device 110 or a wireless audio device 205, and one or more wireless audio devices 310, which may be examples of paired devices 115 or wireless audio devices 210, as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may be a central device (such as a phone) , an initiator, a source device, or a first host and initiating layer and the one or more wireless audio devices 310 may be peripheral devices (such as earbuds, wireless headsets, or speakers) , an acceptor, a sink device, or a second host and responding layer.

[0062] In the following description of the process flow 300, the operations between the wireless audio device 305 and the one or more wireless audio devices 310 may be performed in different orders or at different times. Some operations also may be left out of the process flow 300, or other operations may be added. Although the wireless audio device 305 and the one or more wireless audio devices 310 are shown performing the operations of the process flow 300, some aspects of some operations also may be performed by one or more other wireless devices.

[0063] At 315, the wireless audio device 305 may perform a set of signal strength measurements across a set of channels that are available for communication via a BIS. Each respective signal strength measurement of the set of signal strength measurements may be associated with a respective channel of the set of channels. In some implementations, the respective signal strength measurements (such as RSSI measurements) may enable the wireless audio device 305 to determine a respective interference level for the respective channel.

[0064] At 320, in some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may determine that a quantity of channels are associated with signal strength measurements that satisfy a signal strength measurement threshold. As such, the wireless audio device 305 may select a transmission level to transmit one or more audio packets based on the quantity of channels. In some implementations, the signal strength measurements that satisfy the signal strength measurement threshold may be in association with the signal strength measurements being less than or equal to the signal strength measurement threshold.

[0065] In some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may select the transmission power level based on a comparison between the quantity of channels and a set of channel quality ranges. Further, each channel quality range of the set of channel quality range may correspond to a different transmission power level. For example, the set of channel quality ranges may include a first channel quality range that corresponds to a first transmission power level. The set of channel quality ranges also may include a second channel quality range that is lower than the first channel quality range and corresponds to a second transmission power level that is greater than the first transmission power level. Further, the set of channel quality ranges may include a third channel quality range that is lower than both the second channel quality range and the  first channel quality range, and corresponds to a third transmission power level that is greater than both the second transmission power level and the first transmission power level.

[0066] As such, the wireless audio device 305 may select or use the first transmission power level in accordance with the quantity of channels being within the first channel quality range. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may select or use the second transmission power level in accordance with the quantity of channels being within the second channel quality range. In some other implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may select or use the third transmission power level in accordance with the quantity of channels being within the third channel quality range. Additionally, or alternatively, the wireless audio device 305 may select or use a transmission power level that is a maximum transmission power level based on the quantity of channels being less than a lower limit channel quality threshold.

[0067] At 325, in some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may select a respective transmission power level for each respective channel of a subset of channels of the set of channels. The wireless audio device 305 may select the respective transmission power level based on a respective signal strength measurement associated with the respective channel. In some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may determine that a quantity of channels are associated with signal strength measurements that satisfy a signal strength measurement threshold. As such, the wireless audio device 305 may select the transmission power level as a baseline transmission power level for each respective channel of the subset of channels based on the quantity channels. Further, the respective transmission power level for each respective channel of the subset of channels may be an incremented version or a decremented version of the baseline transmission power level. In some implementations, the signal strength measurements that satisfy the signal strength measurement threshold may be in association with the signal strength measurements being less than or equal to the signal strength measurement threshold.

[0068] In some implementations, the wireless audio device 305 may select the respective transmission power level for a respective channel of the set of channels based on the respective signal strength measurement associated with the respective channel being within a range of signal strength measurements of a set of signal strength  measurement ranges. Further, each range of signal strength measurements of the set of signal strength measurement ranges may correspond to a different increment or decrement from the baseline transmission power level. For example, the wireless audio device 305 may select a first transmission power level for a first channel of the subset of channels based on a first signal strength measurement. The wireless audio device 305 may select the first transmission power level based on the first signal strength measurement being within a first range of signal strength measurements that corresponds to a first increment or decrement from the baseline transmission power level. The wireless audio device 305 also may select a second transmission power level for a second channel of the subset of channels based on a second signal strength measurement. The wireless audio device 305 may select the second transmission power level based on the second signal strength measurement being within a second range of signal strength measurements that corresponds to a second increment or decrement from the baseline transmission power level. Additionally, or alternatively, the wireless audio device 305 may select the first transmission power level for the first channel of the subset of channels where the first transmission power is above a maximum transmission power level.

[0124] Various modifications to the examples described in this disclosure may be readily apparent to persons having ordinary skill in the art, and the generic principles defined herein may be applied to other examples without departing from the spirit or scope of this disclosure. Thus, the claims are not intended to be limited to the examples shown herein, but are to be accorded the widest scope consistent with this disclosure, the principles and the novel features disclosed herein.

[0125] Additionally, various features that are described in this specification in the context of separate examples also can be implemented in combination in a single implementation. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single implementation also can be implemented in multiple examples separately or in any suitable subcombination. As such, although features may be described above as acting in particular combinations, and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can in some implementations be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a subcombination or variation of a subcombination.
