[0045] As used herein, the term “A-IoT” refers to a device without batteries or with limited energy storage capabilities. For A-IoT device, energy is provided by harvesting radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other suitable source. A-IoT device can also be called zero-power terminals, near-zero power terminals, passive IoT device, ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) device, tag, etc. Compared with low-power and wide-coverage services, such as NB-IoT, enhance machine type communication (eMTC) , A-IoT has lower complexity and lower power consumption, and is suitable for more application scenarios. ”

[0046] The motivation of A-IoT study is to support ultra-low cost and ultra-low power  devices for the IoT applications. Three types of A-IoT devices are discussed, namely Type A device, which has no energy storage, no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e., backscattering transmission) ; Type B device, which has energy storage, no independent signal generation, i.e., backscattering transmission and the use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals and Type C device, which has energy storage and independent signal generation, i.e., active Radio Frequency (RF) components for transmission.

[0047] Ambient energy harvesting IoT make use of energy harvested from the environment, e.g., RF energy harvesting, energy harvested from sun light, wind energy, etc. to perform communication over air. Such devices do not operate with conventional batteries or operate with very small batteries which do not need replacement. Such devices are particularly useful in harsh environments where it is not possible to replace batteries such as mountains tops, forests, livestock, industrial environments with extreme temperature / pressure conditions, etc.

[0048] Energy from these means is not stable and the devices operate at very low power; therefore, new transmission techniques and protocols need to be developed. RF Identification (ID) type solutions have been developed but they suffer from limited communication range between device and the reader. Ambient IoT studies in 3GPP target use cases with devices operating below Narrow Band (NB) -IoT operating range (100 μW power consumption) and range extension as compared to RF ID solutions. Examples include logistics and supply chain management, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, wearables, smart home, energy, agriculture, transportation, smart cities, environment.

[0049] A-IoT devices use two communication technologies, namely backscattering communication (BC) (i.e., Type A and Type B) and harvest then transmit (HTT) (i.e., Type C) . Wireless powered backscatter communication systems convey energy to a wireless tag device. Then, the wirelessly powered tag reflects and modulates the incoming RF signal for communication with a tag reader. Wireless powered HTT communication systems deliver wireless energy to power communication devices. Then, the energy harvested by these devices is utilized for transferring their information to information-decoding receivers. BC does not incur the RF-to-direct current (RF-DC) conversion losses during the energy harvesting (EH) process. A BC transmitter does not convert the data to analog signals and does not amplify the signal. Therefore, it does not need digital-to-analog converter and power amplifier circuits, which are the most power consuming  components in generic RF transceivers. However, range of BC is much smaller as compared to harvest then transmit systems, limited by doubly near-far-gain.

[0050] Some connectivity topologies for A-IoT networks and devices were defined during the study. In all these topologies, the A-IoT device may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional. The mixture of indoor and outdoor placement of such nodes is regarded as a network implementation choice.

[0051] As an example, the A-IoT device may directly and bidirectionally communicate with a BS. The communication between the BS and the A-IoT device includes A-IoT data and / or signaling. This topology includes the possibility that the BS transmitting to the A-IoT device is a different from the BS receiving from the A-IoT device.

[0052] As another example, the A-IoT device may communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node between the A-IoT device and BS. In this topology, the intermediate node may be a relay, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater, etc. which is capable of A-IoT. The intermediate node may transfer the information between BS and the A-IoT device.

[0053] It is also possible that the A-IoT device transmits data / signaling to a BS and receives data / signaling from an assisting node; or the A-IoT device receives data / signaling from a BS and transmits data / signaling to an assisting node. In this topology, the assisting node can be a relay, an IAB, a UE, a repeater, etc. which is capable of A-IoT.

[0054] As still another example, the A-IoT device may communicate bidirectionally with a UE. The communication between UE and the A-IoT device may include A-IoT data and / or signaling.

[0055] Unlike traditional communication scenarios, ambient energy is not continuously available, and it varies spatially as well. Therefore, when designing scheduling techniques this uncertainty has to be considered, and also a special attention must be paid on energy efficiency since the energy budget is limited.

[0056] In LTE / NR systems, the data transmission from a UE is based on scheduling assignment from the network. The BS may dynamically or semi-statically indicate resource to be used for transmissions. Such method may not work well for A-IoT devices, as transmissions are subject to the remining energy that initiates the transmission. For example, if the A-IoT device does not have sufficient energy to perform transmission on  full duration of assigned time / frequency resources, the prepared Protocol Data Unit (PDU) based scheduling assignment may be discarded.

[0057] If the A-IoT could dynamically indicate its battery level / status, the network can make scheduling decision more accurate. However, transmitting such indication will consume more energy from the A-IoT device that even brings more problems.

[0058] At least to solve the scheduling issue for transmissions from A-IoT devices, the present disclosure proposes a solution of flexible scheduling. In this solution, the A-IoT device receives, from a network device, a configuration of at least two candidate resource sets for a transmission of the A-IoT. The A-IoT device selects a target resource set for the transmission of the A-IoT device from at least two candidate resource sets at least partly based on an energy status of the A-IoT device and perform the transmission based on the selected target resource set to the network device or a further UE, e.g., a reader.

[0059] In this way, efficient resource utilization can be achieved by matching resource allocation and device battery status. Meanwhile, signaling overhead and power saving can be reduced by avoiding energy level feedback from A-IoT device to the serving gNB for scheduling determination.

[0060] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0061] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1, the communication environment 100 may include a first apparatus 110, a second apparatus 120 and a third apparatus 130. The first apparatus 110 may communicate with the second apparatus 120 within a coverage area 102 and / or the third apparatus 130 within a coverage area 101.

[0062] The first apparatus 110 may be operated as an IoT device. In some scenarios, the first apparatus 110 may be based on energy harvesting and may operate in a passive mode and harvest energy from both 3GPP and non-3GPP devices. For example, the first apparatus 110 may use energy harvested from wireless radio waves, solar / light or any other form of energy that can be harvested in its deployment scenario and may be expected to operate with ultra-low power in the range from tens of microwatts to hundreds of microwatts.

[0063] As an example, the first apparatus 110 may harvest energy and then use an active circuit to transmit data like a transmitter. As another example, the first apparatus 110 may be operated as a passive device and use backscattering to transmit information.

[0064] As shown in FIG. 1, the first apparatus 110 located in the coverage area 101 may be illuminated by energy signals from the third apparatus 130 and backscatter information to the third apparatus 130. The first apparatus 110 located in the coverage area 102 may be illuminated by energy signals from the second apparatus 120 and backscatter information to the second apparatus 120.

[0065] In some scenarios, the first apparatus 110 may be operated as A-IoT device (e.g., tag) . The second apparatus 120 may be operated as a RAN device (e.g., a gNB, a BS or an eNB) . The third apparatus 130 may be operated as a radio terminal device (e.g., UE, which may also be referred to as a reader and / or an activator or fixed receiver etc) . In some embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may also be considered as a reader of the A-IoT device.

[0066] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0067] The reference now is made to FIG. 2, which shows a signaling chart of an example process of flexible scheduling for A-IoT communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling chart 200 involves the first apparatus 110, the second apparatus 120 and the third apparatus 130.

[0068] As described above, the second apparatus 120 may be operated as a network device, e.g., a BS, a gNB or an eNB, which may be able to illuminate the first apparatus 110 (e.g., an A-IoT device) in a cell managed by the second apparatus 120.

[0069] As shown in FIG. 2, the second apparatus 120 determines (205) a resource configuration for a transmission of the first apparatus 110. The resource configuration may indicate at least two candidate resource sets for the transmission of the first apparatus 110. That is, the resource configuration may indicate two or more candidate resource sets for the transmission of the first apparatus 110. The two or more candidate resource sets may be configured with different amount of resources, i.e., associated with different locations of frequency domain, time domain, code domain, spatial domain resource, and / or Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) , etc.

[0070] FIG. 3 shows an example of scheduling assignment to A-IoT device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown FIG. 3, three candidate resources (i.e., candidate resource#1, candidate resource#2 and candidate resource#3) are scheduled for the transmission from the first apparatus 110 to e.g., the second apparatus 120 or the third apparatus 130. The amount of resources associated with the candidate resource#1, candidate resource#2 and candidate resource#3 are different. As shown, they are configured with different range in the time domain. The largest amount of resources are associated with candidate resource#1 and the smallest amount of resources are associated with candidate resource#3.

[0071] As an option, each of different candidate resource sets configured / scheduled for the transmission from the first apparatus 110 may also be associated with a specific A-IoT traffic and / or a specific message size. For example, a large message size may require a candidate resource set configured with larger amount of resources.

[0072] As another option, each of different candidate resource sets configured / scheduled for the transmission from the first apparatus 110 may also be associated with a specific battery level of the first apparatus 110. For example, if the battery level of the first apparatus 110 is insufficient, a candidate resource set configured with smaller amount of resources may be selected to be used for the transmission, because the battery level of the first apparatus 110 may not support a transmission of a large message size and therefore the candidate resource set configured with a larger amount of resources is unnecessary.

[0073] It is to be understood that the battery level of the first apparatus 110 may refer to the battery status of the first apparatus 110 or a device comprising the first apparatus 110.

[0074] Then the second apparatus 120 may transmit (210) the resource configuration to the first apparatus 110. The second apparatus 120 may also transmit (215) the resource configuration to the third apparatus 130.

[0075] After receiving the resource configuration and before performing transmissions, the first apparatus 110 may determine which resource set to be used for the transmission. In this situation, the first apparatus 110 may determine the energy status of the first apparatus 110 and select (220) , from the at least two candidate resource sets at least partly based on the energy status, a target resource set for the transmission of the first apparatus 110.

[0076] As described above, the energy status of the first apparatus 110 may be at least associated with a battery level of the first apparatus 110 or a device comprising the first apparatus 110. The term “energy status” used herein may be referred to as remaining energy of the first apparatus 110 or a device comprising the first apparatus 110.

[0077] It is also possible that the energy status of the first apparatus 110 may also be associated with / based on an illumination duration for an energy harvesting of the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus 110 may harvest energy during the illumination duration, e.g., from the second apparatus 120. It is to be understood that the illumination duration may be a duration of illumination / activation signaling transmitted by illuminator / activator, which may be referred to as a BS, a gNB, an eNB or a UE.

[0078] For example, in a case where three candidate resources (i.e., candidate resource#1, candidate resource#2 and candidate resource#3) are scheduled for the transmission from the first apparatus 110, as shown in FIG. 3, and the largest amount of resources are associated with candidate resource#1 and the smallest amount of resources are associated with candidate resource#3, if the energy status of the first apparatus 110 equals to or exceeds a first threshold level, the candidate resource#1 may be selected as the target resource set for the transmission of the first apparatus 110. In this case, full message may be transmitted from the first apparatus 110 under sufficient battery condition.

[0079] If the energy status of the first apparatus 110 is lower than the first threshold  level and equals to or exceeds a second threshold level that is lower than the first threshold level, the candidate resource#2 may be selected as the target resource set for the transmission of the first apparatus 110. In this case, partial message (e.g., key message) transmission may be performed under insufficient battery condition.

[0080] If the energy status of the first apparatus 110 is lower than the second threshold level, the candidate resource#3 may be selected as the target resource set for the transmission of the first apparatus 110. In this case, only critical information (e.g., low battery indication) may be transmitted.

[0081] Furthermore, the first apparatus 110 may select the target resource set for the transmission of the first apparatus 110 based on the message size to be transmitted. For example, if the battery status of the first apparatus 110 under sufficient battery condition, however, the message size to be transmitted is small, the first apparatus 110 may select the candidate resource#2 for the transmission of the first apparatus 110 rather than candidate resource#1.

[0082] As another option, the first apparatus 110 may obtain, for example, from the second apparatus, an association between resource sets and different energy levels of the first apparatus 110. For example, the association may be obtained along with a reception of the resource configuration. The association may indicate which resource set may be selected under condition of which battery level. It is also possible that the association may be pre-configured.

[0083] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may indicate (225) , to the third apparatus 130 (or to the second apparatus 120) , which resource set is to be or being used for the transmission from first apparatus 110 before or together with the transmission.

[0084] As an example, the second apparatus 120 may transmit a configuration to the first apparatus for indicating the target resource used for the transmission from first apparatus 110.

[0085] For example, the first apparatus 110 may indicate the target resource used for the transmission via a preamble transmission before the transmission from first apparatus 110. As another example, the first apparatus 110 may indicate the target resource used for the transmission via uplink control information (UCI) transmission or a reference  signal (RS) transmission. It is also possible that there could be a common location (i.e., common for different candidate resource sets) for such indication transmission. This can reduce the detection overhead of the receiver (e.g., the third apparatus 130 or the second apparatus 120) .

[0086] In addition to the target resource used for the transmission, e.g., the location of the target resource set in time-frequency domain, the first apparatus 110 may also indicate, to the second apparatus 120, the battery level of the first apparatus 110 or the device comprising the first apparatus 110, to let the second apparatus 120 aware of tag’s remaining battery then make better subsequent scheduling.

[0087] For example, the first apparatus 110 may indicate insufficient battery of the first apparatus 110 or the device comprising the first apparatus 110, to ask potential delay transmission.

[0088] Furthermore, it is also possible the first apparatus 110 may also indicate, to the second apparatus 120, a request of longer or shorter duration of illumination signaling for the energy harvesting of the first apparatus 110. That is, the first apparatus 110 may request more illumination signaling for charging more energy for the subsequent transmission (s) .

[0089] In some example embodiments, the way of how the first apparatus 110 indicates which resource being used is pre-configured by the second apparatus 120, and such information may be delivered to the third apparatus 130. As an example, a default resource set, which is associated with a batter level of the first apparatus 110, may be (pre-) configured by the second apparatus 120. The third apparatus 130 may first perform blind detection on default resource (set) . If the data cannot be decoded, then the third apparatus 130 may try to detect which resource being used based on the configuration.

[0090] Upon receiving the indication of which resource being used, after the transmission is performed by the first apparatus 110, the third apparatus 130 (or the second apparatus 120) may perform (230) the receiving on the target resource set indicated by the first apparatus 110.

[0091] As an example, if the indication of the target resource set is not received or not configured, the second apparatus 120 or the third apparatus 130 may perform blind decoding on configured candidate resources (sets) .

[0092] As another option, if the indication is not received or not configured, the second apparatus 120 or the third apparatus 130 may perform blind decoding on the default candidate resource (set) .

[0093] It is also possible that if a default resource (set) is configured, the second apparatus 120 or the third apparatus 130 may preferentially perform transmission detection from the first apparatus 110 on the default resource (set) . If a transmission based on the default resource (set) is not detected, the second apparatus 120 or the third apparatus 130 may detect the indication information to know if other candidate resource (set) is used for transmission of the first apparatus 110.

[0094] Based on the solution of the present disclosure, efficient resource utilization can be achieved by matching resource allocation and device battery status. For example, the A-IoT device may be capable to deliver key message when A-IoT device has insufficient battery or increase transmission opportunity when A-IoT device has insufficient battery. Meanwhile, signaling overhead and power saving can be reduced by avoiding energy level feedback from A-IoT device to the serving gNB for scheduling determination.

[0095] FIG. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.
