Description

AIR PURIFIER AND METHODField of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to the technical field of air purification. In particular, the present invention relates to an air purifier and a method for separating fur and / or hair from the air.Background of the Invention

[0002] Indoor air quality is crucial for people’s health. Nowadays, more and more homes are raising companion animals such as dogs and cats. In households, especially where companion animals live or in cat and dog cafes, hair, fur, dust and other contaminants of companion animals are widely present in the air in addition to everyday contaminants. These contaminants of companion animal hair and dust become an important factor of poor indoor air quality.

[0003] Air purifiers are used for cleaning indoor air from pollutants and improve indoor air quality. Most indoor air purifiers are able to filtrate particulate pollutants (including PM2.5, bacteria, virus etc. ) effectively by using mature High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) or similar filters. However, when used for purifying indoor air with relatively more objects with a large particle size, such as fur or hair, these air purifiers become less efficient and have many problems. Objects with a large particle size tend to adhere to each other and will easily block filters or stuck within the device body, which leads to the problems of frequent change of filters, inconvenient disassembly and cleaning of device components, and shorter service life of filters as well as device. Therefore, more powerful and efficient air purifiers are needed.

[0004] The present invention has been created in order to improve the above-described problems of air purifiers in the art. The objective of the present invention is to provide an air purifier which could improve the performance of cleaning objects with a large particle size, such as hair and fur, in the air, while still efficiently filter other indoor pollutants to greatly improve indoor air quality.Summary of the Invention

[0005] In a first aspect, the present invention is directed to an air purifier, comprising:

[0006] a housing defining an inner chamber, said inner chamber comprising a first chamber and a second chamber, and said two chambers being in fluid communication;

[0007] an air inlet on the housing of the first chamber;

[0008] an air outlet on the housing of the second chamber;

[0009] an air flow generator in the second chamber;

[0010] an air flow duct in the first chamber for directing an air flow from the air inlet; and

[0011] a container in the first chamber for collecting objects separated from the air flow;

[0012] wherein said air flow duct extends from the air inlet to an opening of the container; and said air flow duct is in fluid communication with the second chamber.

[0013] The air purifier of the present invention comprises a housing defining an inner chamber. The inner chamber comprises a first chamber and a second chamber. The first and second chambers are in fluid communication with each other such that air can flow from one chamber to the other. Preferably, the second chamber is provided above the first chamber in the vertical direction.

[0014] Preferably, the housing of the air purifier comprises a first housing defining a first chamber and a second housing defining a second chamber. Preferably, the second housing is provided on top of the first housing in the vertical direction. Preferably, the first housing and the second housing are detachably connected.

[0015] The housing of the air purifier may have a shape of any form. For example, the housing of the air purifier is in the shape of a box or a cylinder.

[0016] The air purifier preferably comprises a pet accommodating space, such as a pet bed or a pet-friendly platform. Preferably, the pet accommodating space is provided on the top surface of the housing.

[0017] The air purifier of the present invention comprises an air inlet on the housing of the first chamber for drawing air into the device. The air inlet may be provided on any side of the housing of the first chamber. Preferably, the air inlet is provided on the front side of the housing of the first chamber. The air inlet is substantially flat and substantially rectangular or square in shape. Preferably, the air inlet takes up at least 50%of the surface area of one side of the housing of the first chamber. The air purifier may comprise additional air inlets on the housing of the first chamber.

[0018] The air purifier of the present invention comprises an air outlet on the housing of the second chamber for discharging air out of the device. The air outlet may be provided on any side of the housing of the second chamber. The air outlet is substantially flat and substantially rectangular or square in shape. The air purifier may comprise additional air outlets on the housing of the second chamber.

[0019] Air guides are preferably placed at the air outlets to adjust the inclination of the leaving air. The air guides can be fix or adjustable (horizontal or vertical) from 0 degrees to 60 degrees.

[0020] In the present invention, air drawn into the air purifier from the air inlet enters the air flow duct in the first chamber. The air flow duct extends from a first end connected with the air inlet to a second end connected with an opening of a container. Preferably, the air flow duct extends from the air inlet to the opening of the container in the horizontal direction. Alternatively and preferably, the air flow duct extends from the air inlet to the opening of the container in the vertical direction. Preferably, the air flow duct is provided on the bottom plate of the first chamber. Alternatively and preferably, the air flow duct is provided on the side plate of the first chamber.

[0021] The air flow duct is in fluid communication with the second chamber. Preferably, an air flow path extends from the air flow duct to the second chamber. Preferably, the air flow path extends from an opening section of the air flow duct to the second chamber. The opening section is a joint between the air flow duct and the air flow path in the air flow direction. The size of the opening section of the air flow duct may vary. Preferably, the air flow path is a branch duct of the air flow duct extending from the opening section of the air flow duct to the second chamber. Preferably, the air flow duct is an air flow channel in communication with the second chamber.

[0022] We have surprisingly found by providing an air purifier of the present invention, objects with a large particle size entrained in the air flow tend to maintain the original direction of motion while the rest of the air flow is diverted to a different direction by the force generated by an air flow generator.

[0023] Preferably, the air flow duct extends from the air inlet to the opening of the container in a first direction and the air flow path extends from the air duct to the second chamber in a second direction; and the first and second directions are non-coplanar. Preferably, the first and second directions are perpendicular and non-coplanar. An angle is formed between a first plane defined by the first direction and a second plane defined by the second direction. The angle is more than 0 degree and less than 180 degrees, preferably from 10 to 170 degrees, and more preferably from 20 to 160 degrees.

[0024] In one preferred embodiment, the air flow duct extends from the air inlet to the opening of the container in the horizontal direction, and the air flow path extends from an opening section of the air duct to the second chamber in the vertical direction. In another preferred embodiment, the air flow duct extends from the air inlet to the opening of the container in the vertical direction, and the air flow path extends from an opening section of the air duct in the horizontal direction to the second chamber.

[0025] Objects with a large particle size which maintain the original direction of motion will stop due to friction and loss of kinetic energy. We have surprisingly found that by providing an air flow duct having a cross-sectional area in the air flow direction which is large at first and smaller, could create an air flow speed difference that the air flow starts slow and becomes faster. The speed of different objects in the air flow increases after entering the air flow duct, causing the objects with a large particle size to be thrown to the inner wall of the air flow duct and better separated from the air flow.

[0026] Preferably, the cross-sectional area of the first half of the air flow duct in the air flow direction gradually decreases. Most preferably, the cross-sectional area of the air flow duct gradually decreases from the first end to the second end.

[0027] We have also surprisingly found that by providing a portion of the inner wall of the air flow duct with a curved structure, when objects with a large particle size collide with the inner wall of the air flow duct, the curved structure could minimize their kinetic energy loss for smooth entry into the container. This curved structure leads to better separation and gathering of these objects.

[0028] Preferably, a portion of the inner wall of the air flow duct comprises a curved structure. More preferably, the inner wall of the second half of the air flow duct in the air flow direction comprises a curved structure. Even more preferably, the entire inner wall of the air flow duct is a curved structure. Most preferably, the air flow duct is an arc-shaped duct.

[0029] Preferably, the curved structure of the air flow duct smoothly connects the opening of the container. Preferably, the curved structure is an involute arc.

[0030] In one preferred embodiment, a portion of the inner wall of the air flow duct is an involute arc and is smoothly connected with the opening of the container. In another preferred embodiment, the air flow duct is an arc-shaped channel and the cross-sectional area of the air flow duct gradually decreases from the first end to the second end. In another preferred embodiment, the cross-sectional area of the first half of the air flow duct in the air flow direction gradually decreases and the second half of the air flow duct comprises a curved structure connecting the opening of the container.

[0031] The container in the first chamber could be of any shape. The container is preferably detachable from the device. In this way, the user could take it out of the device body and discharge the objects collected in the container. Preferably, the container is in the form of a detachable box or bag, or a drawer. The container could be of any material. Preferably, the container is made from a transparent material.

[0032] Preferably, the container comprises a lid or cover in the air flow direction. The lid or cover may comprise a pre-filter or a frame with a pre-filter. The container preferably further comprises a separation wall protruding from the opening inwardly into the container. The separation wall could keep the collected objects in the container and prevent secondary pollution. The container may also be provided with other mechanism for preventing secondary pollution such as inwardly protruding lid walls.

[0033] Preferably, the container is provided on the bottom plate of the first chamber. Alternatively and preferably, the container is provided on the side plate of the first chamber.

[0034] The term “objects with a large particle size” as used herein refer to an object in the air having a particle diameter larger than 0.01 micrometer. The term “particle size” as used herein refers to an average particle size measured by a laser diffraction / scattering method. Preferably, the objects with a large particle size separated from the air have a particle diameter larger than 0.1 micrometer. Non-limiting example of the objects with a large particle size include dust, fur, hair, fibre, dandruff and debris. Preferably, the objects with a large particle size are fur and / or hair.

[0035] Preferably, the air purifier of the present invention comprises a separation unit in the first chamber in fluid communication with the second chamber, and the air inlet, the air flow duct and the container are provided in the separation unit. The separation unit could be detachably connected to the device. Preferably, the separation unit is a drawer, preferably covered with a pre-filter. Preferably, the separation unit is provided on the bottom plate of the first chamber. Alternatively and preferably, the separation unit is provided on the side plate of the first chamber.

[0036] The air purifier comprises an air flow generator in the second chamber. The air flow generator could draw the air from the first chamber into the second chamber. Preferably, the air flow generator is a fan or an impeller. The fan may be an axial fan, a radial fan, or a mixed flow fan. Preferably, the fan is a forward centrifugal fan or a backward centrifugal, more preferably a forward centrifugal fan.

[0037] Preferably, the purifier comprises a fan duct in the second chamber for guiding the air intake from the air flow duct in the first chamber to the fan and guiding an air flow produced by the fan to the air outlet. The fan duct is flared in a direction from an intermediate portion of the fan duct towards both it ends, and the fan is arranged at least partly in the intermediate portion.

[0038] Preferably, the air purifier further comprises a pre-filter. Pre-filters are filters which have a low air resistance and also function as a poke guard, preventing the user from touching the volute or impeller assembly. The pre-filters are not intended to exhibit any major effect in the context of air purification. They do not have the air resistance or particle entrainment capability of dedicated particulate filters.

[0039] Preferably, the pre-filter is provided upstream of the second chamber of the device in the air flow direction. Preferably, the pre-filter is provided between the air flow duct and the second chamber of the device in the air flow direction. More preferably, the pre-filter is provided between the first chamber and the second chamber of the device. Alternatively and preferably, the pre-filter is provided as a cover of the separation unit in the air flow direction.

[0040] The air purifier further comprises at least a filter media. Preferably, the filter media comprises at least one of carbon, activated carbon, a non-woven, a thermoplastic, a thermosetting material, a porous foam, fibreglass, paper, a high loft spunbound web, a low loft spunbound web, a meltblown web and or a bi-modal fiber diameter meltblown media.

[0041] Preferably, the air purifier comprises a removable filter media. Preferably, the removable filter media may be a particulate filter or gas filter while it is also possible that both a particulate and gas filter may be simultaneously employed. Preferably, the particulate filter is disposed such that air passing along the air flow direction passes through the particulate filter.

[0042] Preferably, the removable particulate filter is a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. The particulate filter is to be contrasted with the pre-filter or any dust filter which is present. Pre-filters and dust filters are not considered HEPA filters as they do not have the particulate capturing capability exhibited by HEPA filters.

[0043] It is to be understood that while the filter part of an air purifier is a vital part of its function, air purifiers are not commonly manufactured with a filter in place. The term “filter” as used herein means that the filter may be fitted separately and is not necessarily included with the manufactured product. Preferably, the filter is precharged before application to the air purifier.

[0044] Preferably, the filter media is provided upstream of the air flow generator in the air flow direction. Preferably, the filter media is provided downstream of the pre-filter in the air flow direction. Preferably, the filter media is provided between the first chamber and the second chamber of the air purifier.

[0045] In one preferred embodiment, the air purifier of the present invention comprises: a housing comprising a first housing defining a first chamber detachably connected with a second housing defining a second chamber, said two chambers being in fluid communication; an air outlet on the second housing; an air flow generator in the second chamber; a separation unit in the first chamber, said separation unit comprising an air inlet on the first housing, an air flow duct for directing an air flow from the air inlet; and a container for collecting objects separated from the air flow; a pre-filter provided between the separation unit and the second chamber; and a filter media provided between the first and second chambers downstream of the pre-filter in the air flow direction; wherein said air flow duct extends from the air inlet to an opening of the container; and said air flow duct is in fluid communication with the second chamber.

[0046] The air purifier of the present invention may further comprise an ioniser, an IFD (Intense Field Dielectric) sterilization module, an ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) , a heater, a cooler, a humidifier, a dehumidifier, one or more processors, one or more sensors, a user interface, or other components that are known in the art.

[0047] Preferably, the air purifier further comprises an ioniser. The ioniser used comprises an emitting electrode and a receiving electrode. These are standard in the art and refer to electrodes which are capable of generating an ion field when subjected to an appropriate voltage. Typically, the voltage will be in the range of up to + / -20 kV though this depends on the location of the device. For example, in a vehicle, where electromagnetic interference is to be managed it is typical to find voltages of -10 to 10 kV or + / -7 kV.

[0048] The emitting electrode is preferably a point, tip or multiple tips or points for example a brush and is in electrical communication with a voltage source. Preferably, the emitting electrode is within 20 cm, more preferably 15 cm, especially preferably 10 cm and most preferably up to 5 cm from the nearest filter medium to be sterilised by bathing it in an ion cloud during activation of the ioniser when required. This distance is the distance from the tip of the emitting electrode to the nearest part of nearest filtration medium, more specifically the part of the filter medium which filters rather than for example a structural frame.
