Description

SYSTEMS AND METHODS OF ENABLING DATASET IDENTIFIER / MODEL IDENTIFIER CONSISTENCY FOR HANDOVER WHEN USING ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE-BASED AIR INTERFACE MECHANISMSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including wireless communications systems that use AI / ML models to process of signaling of a cell.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as  ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems' standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In  certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0007] Frequency bands for 5G NR may be separated into two or more different frequency ranges. For example, Frequency Range 1 (FR1) may include frequency bands operating in sub-6 gigahertz (GHz) frequencies, some of which are bands that may be used by previous standards, and may potentially be extended to cover new spectrum offerings from 410 megahertz (MHz) to 7125 MHz. Frequency Range 2 (FR2) may include frequency bands from 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz. Note that in some systems, FR2 may also include frequency bands from 52.6 GHz to 71 GHz (or beyond) . Bands in the millimeter wave (mmWave) range of FR2 may have smaller coverage but potentially higher available bandwidth than bands in FR1. Skilled persons will recognize these frequency ranges, which are provided by way of example, may change from time to time or from region to region.

[0022] FIG. 13 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0023] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0024] In some wireless communication systems, artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) models may be used to perform channel state information (CSI) compression and / or decompression. Such cases may contemplate the use of a “two-sided” model, where, for example, a first trained portion of the model that is at the UE is capable of encoding CSI calculated at the UE into a (compressed) bitstream, while a second trained portion of the model that is at the network (e.g., a base station of the network) is capable of decoding the (compressed) CSI back out of the bitstream. In cases involving this type of compression of CSI into the bitstream, it may be that air interface resources are saved relative to a case where CSI is instead transmitted over the air interface from the UE to the network in raw form.

[0025] With respect to such a use of trained AI / ML models to perform two-sided CSI compression / decompression, UE data collection (e.g., for purposes of model training and / or inferencing with a trained model) may occur. Accordingly, it may be useful to determine necessities, feasibilities, and / or potential specification impacts with respect to various UE-sided data collection enhancements. These UE-sided data collection enhancements may include, for example, mechanisms for the use of assistance information with respect to UE data collection that enables the categorization of the data using applicable identifiers (IDs) . The purpose of such IDs may be to differentiate characteristics of various sets of such data due to specific configuration, scenarios, site, etc., that apply with respect to that data. In some cases, the provision of assistance information is designed with respect to the feasibility of (not) disclosing proprietary information to the other “side” being communicated with.

[0026] Other such UE-side enhancements may include, for example, enhancements to channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) configurations to enable higher accuracy measurements and / or enhancements to signaling for triggering the data collection.

[0027] Additionally or alternatively, in some wireless communication systems, AI / ML models may be used to perform beam management (BM) . Such cases may contemplate the use of a trained model at the UE to perform beam prediction based on beam measurements.

[0028] Regarding data collection for spatial-domain downlink (DL) transmit (Tx) beam prediction for a Set A of beams that is based on measurement results of a Set B of beams (sometimes referred to herein as “BM-Case1” ) and / or temporal DL Tx beam prediction for a Set A of beams based on historic measurement results of a Set B of beams (sometimes referred to herein as “BM-Case2” ) with such a UE-sided AI / ML model (e.g., for purposes of model training and / or inferencing with the trained model) , it may be useful to determine necessities, feasibilities, and / or potential specification impacts with respect to various UE-sided data collection enhancements. These UE-sided data collection enhancements may include, for example, the use of assistance information sent from the network to the UE with respect to the UE data collection that enable the categorization of the data to specific configurations, scenarios, sites, etc., that apply with respect to that data. The assistance information may be further configured to preserve privacy of the user / proprietary information of the device maker.

[0029] In some wireless communication systems, with respect to the use of inferences based on the use of UE-sided AI / ML models, it may be desirable to ensure consistency with respect to applicable network-side condition (s) for network signaling that is sent between a base station and a UE across both the training stage for the model and inference (use) stage for the model. In some such contexts, it may be that model or dataset identification is used to achieve alignment on the applicable network-side condition (s) that apply to the network signaling as between the network side and the UE side. In some such contexts, model training may occur at the network under the applicable network-side condition (s) , and then the model is transferred to the UE. In some such contexts, information and / or indication (s) on the network-side condition (s) may be provided to the UE. In some such contexts, consistency is assisted by monitoring (by the UE and / or by the network) the performance of the UE-side candidate models / functionalities to enable the selection of a model / functionality. In some such cases, other / additional approaches may be used. Note that there may exist multiple approaches that can achieve one or more of these functions.

[0030] Embodiments disclosed herein relate to model IDs / dataset IDs for AI / ML models that may be used to facilitate data collection and inferencing with respect to different use cases (e.g., different network-side conditions for the corresponding network signaling) . Within such contexts, it may be understood that a same model ID / dataset ID that is used in a radio resource control (RRC) configuration for a data collection procedure for training an AI / ML model is also used in a corresponding configuration for an inferencing procedure that uses the (same) AI / ML model, in order to ensure compatibility / consistency as between the data collection procedure and the inferencing procedure. When so used, the model ID / dataset ID may thus be understood to indicate or represent, in an abstracted way, the applicable network-side condition for the corresponding network signaling.

[0031] In a first example, it may be that a CSI-RS resource set ID is understood as / used as a dataset ID. For example, when CSI-RS resource sets are configured for data collection for a CSI compression use case, each different CSI-RS resource set ID used for these CSI-RS resource sets may correspond to a different antenna port configuration / virtualization pattern at the network side (where each different antenna port configuration / virtualization pattern represents a different network-side condition) .

[0032] In another example, it may be that when a CSI-RS resource set is configured for data collection for BM purposes, the corresponding CSI-RS resource set ID is understood as a model ID / dataset ID that represents a correspondence of a set B to set A relationship. A set A may be understood to correspond to a prediction beam set from which beams are to ultimately be selected / predicted. A set B may be understood to correspond to a measurement beam set of beams that are measured to make predictions / selections with respect to the set A beams. In some such cases, the set B beams are larger beams that each cover multiple of the set A beams. In other such cases, the set B beams are sub-sampled ones of the set A beams (e.g., fewer than all the set A beams) .

[0033] Within some contexts applicable to various embodiments disclosed herein, the uses of a "dataset ID” versus “model ID"may be understood as interchangeable. This may correspond to cases where, for example, a single dataset identified by the dataset ID is used to train a corresponding model identified by the model ID. In such a situation, each of the dataset ID and the model ID are logical IDs that correspond to the same scenario (e.g., the same network-side condition) , and thus a straight swap between a use of a dataset ID instead of using the corresponding model ID (or vice-versa) is possible.

[0034] Within other contexts applicable to various embodiments disclosed herein, it may be that one “model ID” can be related to multiple “dataset ID (s) . ” For example, in a case corresponding to a model ID for a two sided model, it may be that a first dataset having a first dataset ID (that corresponds to the model ID for the overall model) is used to train the UE side of the model, while a second dataset having a second dataset ID (that also corresponds to the model ID for the overall model) is used to train the network side of the model.

[0035] Thus, it is contemplated that in some cases, one model can be trained per dataset, while in other cases, one model can be trained using multiple datasets. It should therefore be accordingly noted that, as a general matter, wherever a use of a “dataset ID” (which may be more granular than a “model ID” in some cases, as just described) is discussed herein, analogous functions could be performed with respect instead to a “model ID” that corresponds to multiple “dataset IDs. ” In order to facilitate succinctness, this possibility of this extension is left implicit with respect to various embodiments discussed herein.

[0036] It may be that a specification for some wireless communication systems provides an AI / ML general framework for one-sided AI / ML models. Aspects of such a framework may include signaling and protocol aspects of life cycle management (LCM) enabling functionality and model selection, activation, deactivation, switching, and / or fallback (note that identification related signaling may be part of the corresponding objective) ; signaling / mechanism (s) for LCM to facilitate model training, inference, performance monitoring, and / or data collection for both UE-sided and network-sided models; and / or signaling mechanism (s) of applicable functionalities / models.

[0037] A specification for some wireless communication systems may provide support for various beam management aspects. In such contexts, DL Tx beam prediction for UE-sided models and / or network-sided models may be contemplated. Various related aspects include, for example, spatial-domain DL Tx beam prediction for a Set A of beams that is based on measurement results of a Set B of beams (e.g., BM-Case1) ; temporal DL Tx beam prediction for a Set A of beams based on historic measurement results of a Set B of beams (e.g., BM-Case2) ; a specification of signaling / mechanism (s) to facilitate LCM operations specific to the beam management use cases, if any; and the enabling method (s) to ensure consistency between training and inference regarding network-side additional conditions (if identified) for inference at UE. It is noted that it may be beneficial to implement a common framework design that supports both BM-Case1 and BM-Case2.

[0038] For inferencing using UE-side models, in order to promote consistency between training operations and inference operations in view of network-side additional conditions, the following options are contemplated as example incorporable into potential approaches: options for model identification in order to promote alignment with respect to the network-side additional condition between network-side and UE-side; options for model training at network and a subsequent model transfer to UE, where the model has been trained under the network-side additional condition; options for information about and / or indications of applicable network-side additional conditions that are may be provided to a UE; and / or options for promoting consistency as assisted by monitoring (by the UE and / or the network) the performance of UE-side candidate models / functionalities to enable the selection of an appropriate model / functionality. Note that still further options / approaches are not precluded (including options / functionalities that use differing approaches to achieve the same function) .

[0039] Embodiments corresponding to the present application relate to designs for and use of model IDs / dataset IDs as these designs and uses relate to mobility. Accordingly, design details based on different methods of model ID / dataset ID design are disclosed.

[0040] In a first set of embodiments, a model ID / dataset ID is included as part of handover command. In first such cases, the model ID / dataset ID may be managed by the applicable CN or operations and maintenance (O&M) platform in order to ensure consistency among different cells. For example, it may be that with respect to such cases a model ID / dataset ID is public land mobile network (PLMN) unique.

[0041] In second such cases, it may be that a model ID / dataset ID is assigned by the RAN, and applies on a per-cell basis.

[0042] Note that in some of this first set of embodiments, it may be that a source cell and a target cell exchange UE model related information via a handover request message.

[0043] In a second set of embodiments for the design of and use of model ID / dataset ID as these designs and uses relate to mobility, it may be that a model ID / dataset ID is not included as part of a handover command. In such cases, it may be that model ID / dataset ID signaling and alignment occurs after handover.

[0044] Embodiments Including Model ID / Dataset ID as part of a Handover Command

[0045] In first cases of embodiments that include model ID / dataset ID information as part of a handover command, it may be that model IDs / dataset IDs are unique at one of a PLMN level and / or a global level. This means that across different cells within that level, if a same model ID / dataset ID is indicated, a same codebook configuration (e.g., for a same set A and a same set B) is ultimately used.

[0046] Cases where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is consistent across cells are now discussed. In this context, multiple alternatives with respect to the use of a model transfer from one of the cells to the UE are available.

[0047] In a first alternative, no model transfer to the UE is used, either because a same AI / ML model (as indicated by a same model ID / dataset ID) is useable at each of the source cell and the target cell for processing signaling data from the respective cell, or because a different AI / ML model (as indicated by the use of a different model ID / dataset ID) is used at the target cell to process signaling as opposed to the source cell, but the  UE already has a corresponding AI / ML model for the model ID / dataset ID for the target cell in its memory.

[0048] FIG. 1 illustrates a flow diagram 100 for a handover of a UE 102 from a source cell 104 to a target cell 106, according to embodiments discussed herein. The flow diagram 100 corresponds to a case where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is consistent across the source cell 104 and the target cell 106.

[0049] The flow diagram 100 illustrates that the UE 102 sends the source cell 104 a UE measurement report 108 according to a mobility related measurement and reporting configuration. Based on the contents of the UE measurement report 108 (e.g., based on an indication that a reference signal receive power (RSRP) of the target cell 106 at the UE 102 is relatively higher than an RSRP of the source cell 104 at the UE 102) , the source cell 104 determines that the UE 102 should perform a handover from the source cell 104 to the target cell 106.

[0050] The source cell 104 accordingly prepares a corresponding handover command 110 and transmits it to the UE 102. This handover command 110 may comprise an RRCConnectionReconfiguration message carrying a model ID / dataset ID for an AI / ML model that can be used by the UE 102 to process signaling of the target cell 106.

[0051] Note that in cases where the AI / ML model identified for use between the UE 102 and the target cell 106 is an AI / ML model that is already in active use for communications between the UE 102 and the source cell 104 (and thus there is a single / same model ID / dataset ID within the PLMN or globally that is applicable to both situations) , the model ID / dataset ID may be omitted from the handover command 110, in which case the UE 102 may infer that it is to use the current AI / ML model for signaling of the source cell 104 for signaling of the target cell 106) . This may be considered to represent an implicit inclusion of the model ID / dataset ID.

[0052] Upon receiving the handover command 110, the UE 102 determines 112 whether an AI / ML model corresponding to the received model ID / dataset ID is supported (e.g., is present in a memory of the UE and is otherwise usable by the UE) . FIG. 1 illustrates the case where the UE determines 112 that the AI / ML model is indeed supported.

[0053] Note that it may be up to an implementation of the UE as to whether one physical AI / ML model corresponds to multiple different model IDs / dataset IDs, or  whether that are multiple (e.g., individual) AI / ML models corresponding to each of those different model IDs / dataset IDs. Accordingly, the UE 102 uses the model ID / dataset ID as received in the handover command 110 to determine whether a corresponding AI / ML model (either a same physical AI / ML model as the one used with the source cell 104, if that model is also for use at the UE 102 according to the new model ID / dataset ID, or a different physical AI / ML model that corresponds with the model ID / dataset ID as drawn from a storage of the UE 102) is supported.

[0054] Once the UE determines 112 that the model ID / dataset ID is supported, the UE 102 sends a handover complete message 114 that includes an RRCReconfigurationComplete message that indicates that the AI / ML model is supported by the UE 102 (e.g., by including the corresponding model ID / dataset ID within the RRCReconfigurationComplete message) .

[0055] Finally, as illustrated, the target cell 106 may provide the UE 102 with an AI / ML model activation command 116 that activates the use of the AI / ML model at the UE 102 for processing signaling of the target cell 106.

[0056] In a second alternative for cases where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is consistent across cells, there is a model transfer to the UE. This can occur when a different model ID / dataset ID is to be used for a serving cell from the model ID / dataset ID used for a target cell, and the UE does not have the corresponding AI / ML model for the model ID / dataset ID stored in memory.

[0057] FIG. 2 illustrates a flow diagram 200 for a handover of a UE 202 from a source cell 204 to a target cell 206, according to embodiments discussed herein. The flow diagram 200 corresponds to a case where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is consistent across the source cell 204 and the target cell 206.

[0058] The flow diagram 200 illustrates that a UE measurement report 108 and a handover command 110 are used (e.g., in the manner that is described in additional detail in relation to FIG. 1) .

[0059] Upon receiving the handover command 110, the UE 202 determines 208 whether an AI / ML model corresponding to the received model ID / dataset ID is supported (e.g., is present in a memory of the UE and is otherwise usable by the UE) . FIG. 2 illustrates the case where the UE determines 208 that the AI / ML model is not supported.

[0060] Once the UE determines 208 that the model ID / dataset ID is not supported, the UE 202 sends a handover complete message 210 that includes an RRCReconfigurationComplete message that indicates that the AI / ML model is not supported by the UE 202. Accordingly, the target cell 206 is informed that the UE 202 is not presently able to use the called-for AI / ML model.

[0061] The target cell 206 may then proceed to send a model transfer message 214 to the UE 202 that is configured to enable the UE 202 to acquire the AI / ML model. In some cases, the model transfer message 214 is sent as a matter of course after (e.g., in response to) a receipt of the handover complete message 210 indicating that the UE 202 does not presently support the indicated AI / ML model. In some alternative cases, as illustrated, the transmission of a model transfer message 214 is instead triggered by the receipt of a model transfer request 212 from the UE 202 that is a separate message from the handover complete message 210.

[0062] In some cases, the target cell 206 may provide the UE 202 with a directly executable version of the AI / ML model in the model transfer message 214. However, it is also contemplated that in alternative cases, the model transfer message 214 may rather include compilation data corresponding to the AI / ML model, in which case the UE 202 may take an additional step of compiling this compilation data as taken from the model transfer message 214 into the AI / ML model.

[0063] After a successful AI / ML model acquisition using the model transfer message 214, the UE 202 sends the target cell 206 an indication 216 that the AI / ML model is useable at the UE 202.

[0064] Finally the flow diagram 200 illustrates that an AI / ML model activation command 116 is used (e.g., in the manner that is described in detail in relation to FIG. 1) .

[0065] Cases where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is not necessarily consistent across cells are now discussed.

[0066] With respect to such cases, it may be that, for example, a model ID / dataset ID correspondence to AI / ML models is defined on a per cell basis. This means that across different cells, for a same model ID / dataset ID, either the same or a different configuration (e.g., a same or a different codebook configuration of set A and set B) applies for a same model ID / dataset ID (there can be no assumption that a same model ID / dataset ID corresponds to a same AI / ML model at both cells) .

[0067] Various details for a case where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is not necessarily consistent across cells are now explained in terms of differences to embodiments illustrated and discussed herein in relation to FIG. 2.

[0068] In such cases, a handover command 110 may include information about a cell ID (e.g., a physical cell identity (PCI) ) of the target cell 206 together with the model ID / dataset ID of the target cell. This allows the source cell 204 to communicate to the UE 202 the relevant model ID / dataset ID in terms of the model ID / dataset ID scheme (corresponding to / represented by the cell ID) as used at the target cell 206.

[0069] Note also that in some of these embodiments, since a model ID / dataset ID is cell specific, a model ID / dataset ID may be included in a handover command 110 even in cases where the value of the applicable model ID / dataset ID is the same with respect to each of the source cell 204 and the target cell 206 (to enable the UE 202 to apply that model ID / dataset ID within a potentially different model ID / dataset ID scheme for the target cell 206) .

[0070] Other mechanisms used in cases where AI / ML model mappings to model IDs / dataset IDs are not necessarily consistent across cells may track the remaining mechanisms as illustrated and described herein in relation to FIG. 2.

[0071] Embodiments for inter-cell communications that may occur in cases using a handover command that includes a model ID / dataset ID are now discussed.

[0072] FIG. 3 illustrates a flow diagram 300 for a handover of a UE 302 from a source cell 304 to a target cell 306, according to embodiments discussed herein. Note that various inter-cell communications discussed in FIG. 3 may or may not occur in embodiments corresponding to other cases disclosed herein for the use of a handover command that includes a model ID / dataset ID.

[0073] The flow diagram 300 illustrates that a UE measurement report 108 is used (e.g., in the manner that is described in detail in relation to FIG. 1) .

[0074] Based on the contents of the UE measurement report 108 (e.g., based on an indication that a reference signal receive power (RSRP) of the target cell 306 at the UE 302 is relatively higher than an RSRP of the source cell 304 at the UE 302) , the source cell 304 determines that the UE 302 should perform a handover from the source cell 304 to the target cell 306. However, prior to the preparation of a corresponding handover command 308 for the UE 302, the source cell 304 performs inter-cell communication  with the target cell 306 in order to acquire relevant information for and / or corresponding to contents of the handover command 308.

[0075] For example, as illustrated, the source cell 304 may send the target cell 306 a handover request message 310. The handover request message 310 may indicate to the target cell 306 one or more of: an AI / ML capability of the UE 302, model IDs / dataset IDs for AI / ML models that are currently being used at the UE 302 (e.g., for processing signaling of the source cell 304) , and / or information about one or more AI / ML models that are supported (e.g., stored) at the UE 302.

[0076] In response to the handover request message 310, the target cell 306 may send the source cell 304 a handover request acknowledgement message 312. The handover request acknowledgement message 312 may indicate to the source cell 304 AI / ML models (e.g., in model ID / dataset ID terms) which can be used with the target cell 306 after a handover to the target cell 306.

[0077] Optionally, a handover request acknowledgement message 312 may include new model ID / dataset ID mappings to AI / ML models (which may be useful, for example, in cases where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is not consistent across the source cell 304 and the target cell 306) .

[0078] Optionally, a handover request acknowledgement message 312 may include updated AI / ML model information for one or more of the AI / ML models (which may be useful, for example, in cases where an understanding of AI / ML models as represented by model IDs / dataset IDs is not consistent across the source cell 304 and the target cell 306) . Note that the transmission of updated AI / ML model information may be used in cases where, for example, a payload size for a AI / ML model as updated can fit within the handover command 308. In some cases, such an updated AI / ML model is prepared by the source cell 304 using the updated AI / ML model information from the target cell 306 and then transmitted to the UE 302 in the handover command 308 (as illustrated) , and thus there may be no subsequent need for the UE 302 to perform a separate model transfer procedure to acquire the AI / ML model after the handover to the target cell 306. If the AI / ML model is not or cannot be included the handover command 308, a model transfer procedure as described in FIG. 2 (see, e.g., discussion of elements 212 through 216) can be incorporated into the flow diagram 300 as needed.

[0079] In some embodiments, the updated AI / ML model information may include metadata corresponding to the AI / ML model being updated. Examples of such metadata  may include, for example, an indication of whether the AI / ML model is used for indoor and / or outdoor cases, whether the AI / ML model is scalable in an input and / or output dimension etc. This meta information may be used by the source cell 304 as an aid in appropriately preparing the updated AI / ML model used in the handover command 308 as illustrated.

[0080] The source cell 304 accordingly prepares and sends the handover command 308 to the UE 302. The handover command 308 may comprise an RRCConnectionReconfiguration message carrying a model ID / dataset ID for an AI / ML model that can be used by the UE 302 to process signaling of the target cell 306. In relevant cases, as just discussed, the source cell handover command 308 may also include one or more updated AI / ML models for the UE 302 (e.g., an updated model for the model ID / dataset ID indicated in the handover command 308 for use with the target cell 306 may be included in the handover command 308) .

[0081] The flow diagram 300 further illustrates that a handover complete message 114 and AI / ML model activation command 116 are then used (e.g., in the manner that is described in detail in relation to FIG. 1) .

[0082] Embodiments That Do Not Include a Model ID / Dataset ID as Part of a Handover Command

[0083] FIG. 4 illustrates a flow diagram 400 for a handover of a UE 402 from a source cell 404 to a target cell 406, according to embodiments discussed herein. FIG. 4 corresponds to embodiments where model ID / dataset ID signaling is separate from signaling of a handover procedure. In such cases, an additional RRC reconfiguration procedure may be used to perform model ID / dataset ID related signaling after the end of a handover.

[0084] The flow diagram 400 illustrates that the UE 402 sends the source cell 404 a UE measurement report 408 according to a mobility related measurement and reporting configuration. Based on the contents of the UE measurement report 408 (e.g., based on an indication that a reference signal receive power (RSRP) of the target cell 406 at the UE 402 is relatively higher than an RSRP of the source cell 404 at the UE 102) , the source cell 404 determines that the UE 402 should perform a handover from the source cell 404 to the target cell 406.

[0085] The source cell 404 accordingly prepares a corresponding handover command 410 and transmits it to the UE 102. Alternatively to other embodiments discussed herein, this handover command 410 does not include an indication of a model ID / dataset ID for an AI / ML model that can be used by the UE 102 to process signaling of the target cell 406.

[0086] Upon receiving the handover command 410, the UE 402 performs the handover to the target cell 406 and correspondingly sends the target cell 406 a handover complete message 412.

[0087] After the handover is complete (e.g., after the handover complete message 412 is transmitted from the UE 402 to the target cell 406) , as illustrated, the target cell 406 may provide the UE 402 with an AI / ML function configuration message 414 that indicates, to the UE 402 a model ID / dataset ID for an AI / ML model to use for processing signaling of the target cell 406.

[0088] Upon receiving the handover command 410, the UE 402 determines 416 whether an AI / ML model corresponding to the received model ID / dataset ID is supported (e.g., is present in a memory of the UE and is otherwise usable by the UE) . The UE 402 then sends the target cell 406 an RRC reconfiguration complete message 418 indicating the resulting determination.

[0089] As illustrated, in cases where the RRC reconfiguration complete message 418 indicates that the AI / ML model is not supported, the target cell 406 may proceed to send the UE 402 a model transfer message 420. The model transfer message 420 is configured to enable the UE 402 to acquire the AI / ML model. In some cases, the target cell 406 may provide the UE 402 with a directly executable version of the AI / ML model in the model transfer message 420. However, it is also contemplated that in alternative embodiments, the model transfer message 420 may rather include compilation data corresponding to the AI / ML model, in which case the UE 402 may take an additional step of compiling this data as taken from the model transfer message 420 into the AI / ML model.
