AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing communication networks, particularly 5G networks, lack effective mechanisms for monitoring and measuring Quality of Service (QoS) metrics over the N6 interface, which is crucial for accurate edge application server (EAS) discovery and deployment, as they do not account for dynamic factors like load status and computing capabilities of EAS instances.

Method used

A network device triggers QoS measurements over data network user plane interfaces, transmitting configuration parameters to other devices for monitoring QoS metrics, including N6 interface delays, to facilitate better EAS discovery and deployment by considering dynamic network and compute metrics.

Benefits of technology

Enables accurate monitoring and utilization of QoS metrics for controlled or assisted EAS discovery, improving the selection of EAS instances based on real-time network and computing conditions, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of edge computing.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to quality of service (QoS) measurement. In an aspect, a first network device triggers at least one QoS measurement over at least one data network user plane interface of a communication network and at least one network node of a data network. The first network device further transmits, to at least one second network device, a configuration comprising one or more measurement parameters for the at least one QoS measurement over the at least one data network user plane interface. As such, a solution for triggering and measuring the QoS metrics over at least N6 interface can be provided, and thus the QoS metrics can be better monitored and used for controlled or assisted (edge) application servers (AS or EAS) discovery or rediscovery.

Description

QUALITY OF SERVICE MEASUREMENTFIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments generally relate to the field of communication, and in particular, to a first network device, a second network device, a third network device, a fourth network device, methods, apparatuses and a computer readable storage medium for quality of service (QoS) measurement.BACKGROUND

[0002] A communication network can be seen as a facility that enables communications between two or more communication devices, or provides communication devices access to a data network. A mobile or wireless communication network is one example of a communication network. Such communication networks operate in according with standards such as those provided by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) or ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) . Examples of standards are the so-called 5G (5th Generation) standards provided by 3GPP.

[0003] Edge computing (EC) refers to the technology of processing and analyzing data at the edge of the network. Unlike cloud computing, edge computing places some or all computational tasks on devices closer to the data source, reducing data transmission delays and enhancing the speed and efficiency of data processing. For a certain edge data network (EDN) , during the edge application server (EAS) deployment phase, where and how many EAS instances are deployed may be determined based on the requirements from the application service provider (ASP) . The connections between new deployed EAS and user plane functions (UPFs) for a certain EDN may be preconfigured via a management plane.SUMMARY

[0049] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0050] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0051] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0052] (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0053] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the  particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network node, or other computing or network node.

[0054] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network node in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or beyond. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0055] As used herein, the term “network node” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network node may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology.

[0056] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of things  (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial, a relay node, an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) node, and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0057] As used herein, the term “resource” , “transmission resource” , “resource block” , “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink (UL) resource” or “downlink (DL) resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network node, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, a resource in a combination of more than one domain or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, a resource in time domain (such as, a subframe) will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0058] As discussed above, 3GPP has worked on fifth generation (5G) system (5GS) support for EC since the release (Rel) -15. EC enables new applications or enhanced user experience for applications through lower latency. In EC, EAS (re) discovery is one of the key issues treated in 3GPP SA2. EAS (re) discovery can consider user plane latency requirements, provided by an AF via AF traffic influence request. However, a session management function (SMF) only considers the user plane latency requirements as latency between a UE and a protocol data unit (PDU) session anchor (PSA) UPF, yet N6 (such as from the PSA UPF to an EAS or any node in the EDN or data network (DN) ) delay is not considered.

[0059] In a design, the (re) discovery of the EAS by an EAS discovery function (EASDF) is based on the EAS deployment information which only includes the static deployment information, yet the load status and computing capability of the EAS are not considered since this information is not applicable to the EASDF. In order to (re) discover a more suitable EAS, some dynamic information (e.g., an EAS load, N6 delay between the local PSA and EAS)  and relationship between different EASs needs to be made available to the EASDF. This information should be investigated together.

[0060] Recently, a new paradigm called “compute and network convergence (CNC) ” has emerged. The server instance selection could be based on combination of both network and compute metrics (e.g., available compute capacity, a compute load, a processing delay and / or a scaling policy) related to each EAS instance. This means that in some cases, for example, an EAS instance which is not closest (or does not in general have the best network metrics) to the UE would be preferred because its compute load is lower than that of the closest instance. Thus, an issue of how to enable the multi-domain-based server instance selection is one of the problems to be solved.

[0061] In 5GS, a QoS monitoring mechanism can be implemented to determine, measure and / or monitor 5GS internal delays. The mechanism allows an AF to subscribe to the DL, UL or round-trip packet delay measurement between UE and anchor UPF. PCF translates the AF’s request to policy and charging control (PCC) rules and instructs the SMF to control the actual measurement. The SMF configures the radio access network (RAN) and UPF respectively. The UPF calculates the UL / DL packet delay between UE and PSA UPF based on received RAN part packet delay and calculated packet delay between NG-RAN and PSA UPF. The UPF reports the calculated packet delay between NG-RAN and PSA UPF to the AF via control plane or user plane. However, the QoS monitoring mechanism for delay measurement does not apply to measurements or monitoring for any 5GS external delays such as an N6 delay between a UPF and an EAS or any other node in the EDN or the DN.

[0062] It is provided a way for the 5GS to provide expected delay between UPF and / or data network access identifier (DNAI) and an EAS to an AF via the EAS address and DNAI mapping information. However, the whole EAS address and DNAI mapping information maintained in the unified data repository (UDR) and / or network exposure function (NEF) is configured by an operations, administration, and management (OAM) function and there is no way for 5G core network (5GC) (e.g., an SMF) to obtain the delay values by real-time measurements.

[0063] There is an assumption that the N6 delay between the PSA UPF and the EAS, the AS, or any other nodes in the EDN or the DN would have to be known by the 5GS. To make this information useful for 5GS controlled or assisted EAS (re) discovery, the 5GC needs this information in order to steer traffic or to provide assistance information to EASDF or AF  based on it. The procedures for 5GS to obtain the N6 delay information is at least one problem to be solved in the present disclosure. Similar to the N6 delay, other QoS parameters (e.g., a packet delay variation, a packet loss, a data rate and etc. ) may also be relevant to 5GS controlled or assisted EAS (re) discovery.

[0064] Therefore, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a general solution to solve, for example, the problem on how to trigger and measure the QoS metrics over at least the N6 interface as well as other potential problems. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a first network device triggers at least one QoS measurement over at least one data network user plane interface of a communication network and at least one network node of a data network. The first network device further transmits, to at least one second network device, a configuration comprising one or more measurement parameters for the at least one QoS measurement over the at least one data network user plane interface. By example embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution for triggering and measuring the QoS metrics over at least the N6 interface can be provided, and thus the QoS metrics can be better monitored and used for controlled or assisted AS or EAS discovery or rediscovery.

[0065] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure for enabling an announcing area will be described below with reference to FIG. 1A-FIG. 9. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way. It is also to be noted that even though the description takes RAN radio access network as an example of access network allowing the UE to access to a 3GPP core network like the 5G core network, it has to be understood that this is not limitative and that other kind of ccess networks may be used such as an untrusted non 3GPP access network and wireline access network to a 3GPP core network. Likewise a RAN may correspond to terrestrial access network or to a non-terrestrial access network and is not limited to base stations located on the ground.

[0066] Reference is made to FIG. 1A, which illustrates an example network environment 100A in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The network environment 100A, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a first network device 102, a second network device 104, a third network device 106, and a fourth network device 108.

[0067] As illustrated in FIG. 1A, the network environment 100A includes the first network device 102 (such as a network node of an SMF) . The network environment 100A includes the second network device 104 (such as a network node of a UPF) . The network environment 100A includes the third network device 106 (such as a network node of an NEF) . The network environment 100A includes the fourth network device 108 (such as a network node of an AF) .

[0068] In some example embodiments, the AF may include at least one of a central AF, or a local AF (L-AF) . The NEF may including at least one of a central NEF or a local NEF (L-NEF) . A network node of the data network may comprise at least one of an EAS, a gateway associated with the EAS, or an ingress node associated with the EAS.

[0069] The first network device 102 and the second network device 104 may communicate with each other directly. The first network device 102 and third network device 106 may communicate with each other via a PCF 112 or communicate with each other directly. The second network device 104 may communicate with the PCF 112 directly. The second network device 104 may further communicate with a network node of a data network 110 (for example, a DN endpoint (DN-EP) via an interface 116. The second network device 104 may further communicate with a terminal device 114 (which may be referred to as a UE 114 hereinafter) via an interface 118. The interface 116 between the second network device 104 and the network node of a data network 110 (also referred to as a DN-EP 110) may be also referred to as the N6 interface.

[0070] It is to be understood that the number of the network devices and / or terminal devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The environment 100A may include any suitable number of the network devices and / or terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more devices may be located in the environment 100A.

[0071] Reference is made to FIG. 1B, which illustrates an example idea principle 100B in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The idea principle 100B introduces a method to enable the 5GC 120 to measure the network metrics over at least the N6 interface, between a UPF 126 and a DN-EP 124 (such as an AS or EAS itself or another node in the DN or EDN on the path and close to the AS or EAS, e.g., a router, gateway, ingress node or a load balancer) . It is to be understood that for the purpose of simplification, EAS in the DN is only an example for illustrating the solution of the present disclosure. Any node in DN may also include the case that any node in EDN and may be applicable for all the options or embodiments. The procedures of how the QoS measurement and monitoring  is triggered, configured, and controlled are provided. The following description will take the packet delay over N6 as an example. It is to be understood that the idea principle 100B works for other metrics measurement over the N6 interface, an interface between a UE and the PSA UPF, and / or the N3 interface, which may be, but not limited to a packet loss, a packet delay variation or a data rate (such as a throughput and / or capacity) .

[0072] In general, the procedure for QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface may be triggered by the following: 1) SMF local policies; 2) an OAM, and in this case the probable information being reported may be QoS parameters over the N6 interface; or 3) an AF, and in this case the probable information being reported is QoS parameters for links between a UE or a UE group and a collection of EASs. Hereinafter, six aspects of the idea principle 100B will be described for an overall and brief introduction.

[0073] First, the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface may be triggered by information received from or configured by an AF, an OAM or (SMF) local policy, which include measurement requirements or measurement assistance information. Different triggers may include different parameters. For example, measurement requirements may relate to the 5GS information, DN-EP information, information associated with an EAS, application information or any combination of the above information included in the measurement requirements or measurement assistance information.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the measurement requirements or measurement assistance information may be applied for different use cases. As an example, the measurement assistance information may be part of the measurement requirements excluding the application ID received by an NEF and from an AF. As another example, the measurement assistance information may be information derived by an NEF based on the received measurement requirements from the AF and may need to be transmitted to the other network functions. As a further example, the measurement assistance information may be information elements that can be provided, configured or deployed by an AF to the 5GS.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the measurement requirements or measurement assistance information may be provided to the 5GS via different procedures. As an example, the measurement requirement may be provided by an AF to the 5GS via a procedure for QoS monitoring (e.g., an AF session with QoS requirement) , a procedure for service provisioning, a procedure for AF influence on traffic routing, or a procedure for a new service. As another example, the measurement requirement may be provided by the OAM to the 5GS via a  management plane procedure. As a further example, the measurement assistance information may be provided, configured or deployed by an AF to the 5GS via EAS deployment information (EDI) . The aforementioned examples are only for better understanding the present disclosure without any limitations. That is, other examples are not excluded.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the 5GS information may correspond to a list of data network name (DNN) , single network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) , UE address, UE group address or identifier or UE location identifier. The UE identifier may be but not be limited to an IP address or a prefix. The UE location identifier may correspond but not be limited to a specific RAN node.

[0077] In some example embodiments, the DN-EP information may correspond to at least one of DNAI, end point ID, a list of IP address, IP address range, fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or uniform resource locator (URL) of remote peer in DN (e.g., EAS or any other nodes in the DN) .

[0078] In some example embodiments, if the DN-EP is not the EAS itself, the EAS information may correspond to a list of EASID, IP address, IP address range, FQDN. In some example embodiments, if the EAS information is included, the AF may also provide EAS instantiation information per EASID (e.g., instantiated, instantiable but not be instantiated yet) . This information may tell which DN-EP is for the EAS and the measurements performed between the UPF and that DN-EP are relevant.

[0079] In some example embodiments, for application information, application ID, service descriptor, or traffic filtering information may be provided.

[0080] Second, measurement protocol related information may also be provided as measurement requirements or measurement assistance information to indicate the supported protocols for the measurements in order of preference. For example, STAMP [RFC 8792] or TWAMP [RFC 5357] , ICMP or HTTP may be applied. Some protocol specific configuration parameters may also be included. For example, if STAMP is indicated, measurement role, operation mode, security related parameters (such as an authentication mode) , and / or port number may be provided.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the reporting related parameters may be provided as measurement requirements which include reporting frequency, target of reporting and threshold (s) .

[0082] Third, upon receiving measurement requirement or measurement assistance information, the 5GC (e.g., the NEF or the SMF) may determine the measurement target (such as the EAS (s) or any other nodes in the DN) and prepare measurement parameters including the determined measurement target. The measurement parameters may be sent to another NF in 5GC (e.g., the SMF) or determined locally in the SMF.

[0083] Fourth, the 5GC (e.g., SMF) may initiate and configure the measurement parameters for the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface to the UPF. The SMF may determine and configure the impacted UPFs about the QoS monitoring over the N6 interface based on the received measurement requirements from an AF or an OAM, or based on the configured or determined measurement requirements by the AF, the OAM or a local policy. The SMF may determine and configure the impacted UPFs about the QoS monitoring over the N6 interface based on the received measurement assistance information from the AF, the OAM, an NEF, or based on the configured or determined measurement assistance information by the AF, the OAM, the NEF or the local policy, or based on the received measurement parameters from the NEF. The SMF may determine and configure the impacted UPFs about the QoS monitoring over the N6 interface based on the measurement capabilities of the UPF.

[0084] Fifth, the UPF may receive the configured measurement parameters for the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface and may perform the packet delay measurement between itself and the DN-EPs (may be corresponding to EAS (es) ) or a determined measurement target. The UPF may report the measured packet delay over the N6 interface to the SMF or the AF and / or the NEF directly according to configuration from the SMF. Before the UPF receives the configuration of the QoS monitoring over the N6 interface, it may also report its measurements capabilities (not shown in the Fig. 1B) . SMF may use the UPF measurement capabilities while determining and configuring the impacted UPFs for the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the results of QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface may be used as follows: 1) the AF may use the results of QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface to provide a more accurate 5GS user plane latency requirement (e.g., for radio level scheduling) considering the reported delay over the N6 interface into the E2E latency requirement for EAS (re) discovery; 2) 5GC (e.g., the SMF or the PCF) may expose the results of QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface directly to the AF based on received request for the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface; and / or 3) the 5GC may calculate the sum of the measured delay over the N6 interface locally, the measured  delay between a UE and the PSA UPF, and / or the measured delay over the N3 interface. This sum can be called as a combined measured delay hereinafter. The combined measured delay can be used for different use cases. As an example, the SMF may use the combined measured delay when considering edge relocation. For example, for 5GS-determined joint EAS and UPF (re) selection to meet an E2E user plane latency requirement requested by the AF or to determine 5GS-centric EAS (re) discovery in case of INC. Again, it is to be understood that the procedures for triggering QoS monitoring can be used for other metrics measurement, such as a packet loss, a packet delay variation or a data rate.

[0086] Finally, the QoS measurement report may be sent directly from the UPF to the NEF, AF, local NEF or local AF based on the received configuration from the SMF. The QoS measurement report may be sent from the UPF to the AF via the SMF and / or PCF. The QoS measurement report may be sent from the UPF to the SMF (as the SMF is the consumer of the results of the QoS measurement) .

[0087] Reference is made to FIG. 1C, which illustrates an example measurement scenario 100C in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. in FIG. 1C, EASs 134 and 136 are configured to be measured. Thus, EASs 134 and 136 ae the DN-EPs. SMF 130 may configure the UPF 132 to perform the QoS measurement over the N6 interface.

[0088] Reference is made to FIG. 1D, which illustrates another example measurement scenario 100D in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In FIG. 1D, only a gateway or ingress node 148 is visible to the 5GS, and the gateway or ingress node 148 is used to access the EASs behind the gateway / ingress.

[0089] In the measurement scenario 100D, the gateway and / or ingress node 148 may be the DN-EP as defined in the present disclosure. The gateway and / or ingress node 148 may be an IP router, a tunneling gateway (where the tunnel may be any type of IP or L2 tunneling protocol such as GTP-U, L2TP, IPSec in tunnel mode, or HTTP / QUIC) or a load balancer. The gateway and / or ingress ode may be on the path to one or more EASs 144 and 146. The measurement results between the UPF 142 and DN-EP may reflect accurately enough metrics between the UPF 142 and those EASs such as the EASs 144 and 146. DN-EP information and EAS address information may both be provided by the AF to trigger the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface. The DN-EP information may be used by the 5GS to determine the measurement point, while the EAS information may be used to determine which DN-EP corresponds to which EAS (s) for the purpose of generating EAS instance specific  measurement results which are needed for selecting between EAS instances or for determining if a certain EAS instance meets the end-to-end UE to EAS delay requirements.

[0090] In some example embodiments, the DN-EP to EAS mapping information may include an additional delay component to be added to the delay measurements between the UPF and the DN-EP. This delay component may represent the delay between the DN-EP and the EAS.

[0091] Reference is made to FIG. 2A, which illustrates an example signaling process 200A of the QoS measurement in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 2A shows the case that the SMF triggers the QoS measurement. FIG. 2A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A

[0092] The first network device 102 triggers (202) at least one QoS measurement over at least one data network user plane interface of a communication network and at least one network node of a data network. For example, the first network device 102 (will be referred to as an SMF hereinafter) may activate the QoS measurement over the N6 interface based on received, configured or determined measurement requirements from AF, OAM or by local policy; received, configured or determined measurement assistance information from AF, OAM, NEF or by local policy; or measurement parameters received from NEF.

[0093] The information for triggering the QoS measurement over the N6 interface is as shown in the Table 1. The received measurement requirements or measurement assistance information may comprise any portion of Table 1.

[0094] Table 1: Information for triggering the QoS measurement over the N6 interface

[0095] In some example embodiments, the SMF may receive the measurement parameters (also referred to as the first set of measurement parameters) from another NF in the 5GC including one or more of DN-EP information, 5GS information, EAS and DN-EP to EAS mapping information, measurement protocol related information, and reporting related parameters. In such case, other NF (e.g., the NEF) in the 5GC may derive the measurement  parameters based on received measurement requirements for the at least one QoS measurement over at least the N6 interface from an AF or OAM as shown in Table 1.

[0096] In some example embodiments, if SMF decides to trigger the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface based on a local policy, it may derive the measurement parameters locally. In some example embodiments, SMF may use 5GS information comprising one or more of DNN, S-NSSAI, UE address, UE identifier, or UE location identifier, UE group address, UE group identifier, or UE group location identifier to determine the UPF to use for the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface. In some example embodiments, the SMF may further determine a preferred protocol to be used by the UPF and configure the protocol-specific configuration parameters based on, for example, local policy and / or received measurement parameters.

[0097] In some example embodiments, if the SMF determines to use STAMP as the measurement protocol, it may configure the UPF with at least one of a measurement role (session-sender) , an operation mode, security related information (such as an authentication mode) , a port number and so on. For other protocols, the similar principle may apply.

[0098] The first network device 102 transmits (204) , to at least one second network device 104 (sometimes will be referred to as the UPF hereinafter) , a configuration 208 comprising one or more measurement parameters for the at least one QoS measurement over the at least one data network user plane interface. The at least one second network device 104 receives (206) the configuration 208 from the first network device 102. In this way, the SMF can configure the determined UPF with measurement parameters for QoS monitoring over at least the N6.

[0099] The second network device 104 performs (210) the at least one QoS measurement based on the configuration comprising the one or more measurement parameters. For example, the UPF may perform the configured QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface by using the protocol configured by the SMF or based on implementation if the protocol is not configured by the SMF. The UPF may report the measured QoS parameters to the SMF.

[0100] In some example embodiments, the SMF may expose the received measured QoS parameters for further usage by other NFs or entities or may use the received measured QoS parameters locally. In some example embodiments, the SMF may expose the received measurement report to the AF via a PCF or the AF via an NEF, or any other 5GC NFs (e.g., network data analytics function, NWDAF) .

[0101] In some example embodiments, the SMF or the PCF may also build the combined measured delay by calculating the sum of the measured delay over the N6 interface and the delay between a UE and a PSA UPF and / or the measured delay over the N3 interface. Then the SMF or the PCF may expose the combined measured delay to the AF or any other 5GC NF (e.g., NWDAF) . In some example embodiments, the SMF / PCF may report the combined measured delay to the AF about a list of candidate DNAIs as part of an early notification. In some example embodiments, the SMF / PCF may report the combined measured delay associated with a list candidate DNAIs to the NEF as part of common DNAI selection for a set of UEs.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the SMF may consume the measurement results (the N6 delay or combined measured delay) locally. In some example embodiments, the SMF may use the combined measured delay to compile the candidate DNAI list.

[0103] In some example embodiments, UPF may transmit the combination set to: the AF directly; the AF via an NEF; the AF via an L-NEF; an L-AF directly; the L-AF via an NEF; the L-AF via an L-NEF; an OAM; or any combination thereof.

[0104] FIG. 2B illustrates another example signaling process 200B of the QoS measurement in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 2B shows the case that the AF triggers the QoS measurement. FIG. 2B will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A

[0105] The fourth network device (may be referred to as an AF hereinafter) 108 transmits (222) , to the third network device 106 (may be referred to as an NEF hereinafter) , information 226 for triggering at least one QoS measurement over at least one data network user plane interface of a communication network and at least one network node of a data network. The third network device 106 receives (224) the information 226 from the fourth network device 108. The information for triggering the at least one QoS measurement may comprise at least one of one or more measurement requirements or one or more measurement assistance information.

[0106] Then, the third network device 106 may determine a measurement target based on at least of one or more measurement requirements or one or more measurement assistance information. The third network device 106 may determine one or more measurement parameters based on the measurement target and at least one of one or more measurement requirements or one or more measurement assistance information.

[0107] In some example embodiments, information for triggering the at least one QoS measurement may comprise a trigger (such as a request for providing or a request for triggering at least one of the one or more measurement requirements or the one or more measurement assistance information) .

[0108] In some example embodiments, the one or more measurement parameters may comprise at least one of the measurement target, parameters to be measured, measurement protocol-specific parameters, reporting related parameters, or information associated with a communication system.

[0109] Then, the third network device 106 transmits (228) , to at least one of a PCF or a first network device, the one or more measurement requirements or the one or more measurement assistance information. Or instead of 228, the third network device 106 stores (230) the one or more measurement requirements or the one or more measurement assistance information in a unified data repository (UDR) .

[0110] For a complete description of the procedures of the QoS measurement triggered by the AF, reference will be made to FIG. 3 hereinafter. FIG. 3 illustrates an example signaling process 300 of a measurement triggered from an AF in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In FIG. 3, the AF 308 may request the 5GS to perform the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface.

[0111] At 320, the SMF 302 may provide protocol-specific parameters and information of the UPF 304 together with an early notification (e.g., TWAMP / STAMP / ICMP / HTTP, indicating the address of the UPF 304) . In such case, it is up to the AF 308 to trigger the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface. The step 320 may be optional and may be applicable when the AF 308 received the early notification due to a UE mobility.

[0112] At 322, the AF 308 may send a request for a QoS measurement over at least the N6 interface to the NEF 306. The detailed information or parameters included in the request for the QoS measurement over at least the N6 interface may be found in Table 1 as described above.

[0113] In some example embodiments, if the requested targets are for certain UE (s) , a QoS monitoring procedure may be reused. For example, the Nnef_AFSessionWithQoS_Create / Modify service may be reused and be extended. In such case, the Nnef_AFSessionWithQoS_Create / Modify service may need to be updated to support the measurement requirements that may include information listed in Table 1.

[0114] In some example embodiments, if the requested targets are for certain application (s) , a procedure for service specific parameter provisioning (for example, 3GPP TS 23.502 V18.4.0 (2023-12) , clause 4.15.6.7.2) may be reused. In such case, the AF 308’s request for the QoS measurement may include any one of application information and DN-EP information. In this case, the Nnef_ServiceParameter_Create / Update / Delete service may be reused and be extended. Further, a new Nnef service may need to be defined to support measurement requirements that may include information listed in Table 1.

[0115] In some example embodiments, a procedure for an AF influence on traffic steering (for example, 3GPP TS 23.502 V18.4.0 (2023-12) , clause 4.3.6.4) may be reused. In such case, the Nnef_TrafficInfluence_Create / Update / Delete request may be used and be extended to allow the AF 308 provide the measurement requirements including information listed in Table 1. The AF 308’s request for the QoS measurement may be targeting for a list of UEs, a certain UE group or a certain application.

[0116] In some example embodiments, a procedure for EAS deployment information (EDI) provision from the AF 308 via the NEF 306 (for example, 3GPP TS 23.548 V18.4.0 (2023-12) , clause 6.2.3.4.2) may be reused. In such case, the Nnef_EASDeployment_Create / Update / Delete service may be used. The AF 308’s Nnef_EASDeployment_Create / Update request may be extended to allow the AF 308 to provide the measurement assistance information including information listed in Table 1. In such case, the NEF 306 may send the received one or more measurement assistance information to the SMF 302 directly, which is not shown in the FIG. 3.

[0117] In one or more example embodiments above, the measurement requirements may include measurement protocol related information (as shown in Table 1) and reporting related information. Protocol information may include the supported protocol (for example, supported protocol for measurement in the order of preference: e.g., STAMP, TWAMP, ICMP, HTTP, etc. ) and / or protocol specific configuration information (e.g., a measurement role (session-sender) , an operation mode, security related information (such as an authentication mode) , and / or a port number) . The reporting related information may reuse the legacy QoS monitoring mechanism, which may include at least one of a reporting frequency, a target of reporting and threshold (s) .

[0118] At 324, upon receiving the AF 308’s request for the QoS measurement over at least the N6 interface, the NEF 306 may translate the request and determine the measurement  target (s) . The NEF 306 may also prepare measurement parameters (also referred to as the second set of measurement parameters) for QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface based on the measurement requirements and the determined measurement target (s) . In some example embodiments, if the application information is provided but the DN-EP information is not included in the AF 308’s request for the QoS measurement, based on the EAS address and the DNAI mapping information maintained in the NEF 306 and / or the UDR 314, all EAS (es) associated with the DNAI may be selected as the measurement targets. With the EAS address and the DNAI mapping information, the NEF 306 may know which EAS (es) is / are associated with a respective DNAI.

[0119] In some example embodiments, if the QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface is for UE (s) , UE-based measurement parameters for QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface may be conveyed to the PCF 312 associated with the PDU session of the UE. Then, at 326, the PCF 312 may provide the measurement parameters in PCC rules. The PCC rules may need to be updated / extended to carry these measurement parameters. Then at 332, the PCF 312 may inform the SMF 302 about the notification with the measurement parameters for QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface in the updated / extended PCC rules.

[0124] Use case 2: upon receiving an early UE mobility notification from the SMF 302, the AF 308 may request the N6 delay between the PSA UPF of the UE and a collection of EAS in order to select a proper EAS once the PSA UPF or the target DNAI of the UE has changed.

[0125] Use case 3: upon the UE trying to reach an application via an application load balancer (LB) , this LB acting as the AF 308 may request immediate monitoring of (end to end) combined delay (or of the N6 delay) between a UE (identified by an IP address) and a set of candidate EAS (s) or between a UE and candidate data centers hosting an EAS supporting the target application. Each candidate EAS (s) or data center may be identified by the IP address and port number of their respective delay monitoring termination. Supporting protocols may be in order of preference (e.g., STAMP, TWAMP, ICMP and / or HTTP) . Once the LB has got the QoS measurement result, it may select the most appropriate EAS or data center.

[0126] Use case 4: the AF 308 may not be mandated to select the EAS with the smallest delay and the AF 308 may take other information into account to select the most appropriate EAS such as the load of the EAS.

[0127] In some example embodiments, the OAM function may request SMF 302 to measure the metrics over at least the N6 interface. For a certain EDN, the connections between instantiated EAS (s) and one or more UPFs 304 may be preconfigured by the management plane. The OAM function may request the SMF 302 to measure the metrics over at least the N6 interface for these connections. In such case, the measurement requirements may include  both the 5GS information and DN-EP information and / or with the EAS information) . All pair of one or more UPFs 304 and DN-EP 310 (and / or with the EAS) may be informed by the OAM function to the SMF 302. The measurement report may be sent to the OAM function. The OAM function may store the content of the report in the EAS address and DNAI mapping information in UDR 314 and / or NEF 306.

[0128] In some example embodiments, the UPF 304 may register its measurement capabilities and supported protocol. The UPF 304, when establishing or updating an association with the SMF 302, for example, before it receives any N4 session related signaling or any configuration of combined QoS monitoring or of QoS monitoring over at least the N6 interface, may also report its measurements capabilities to the SMF 302.
