[0126] FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of a communication system in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. The communication system includes but is not limited to one network device and one terminal device. The number and form of the devices shown in FIG. 1 are only examples and do not constitute a limitation on the embodiments of the present invention. In actual applications, two or more network devices and two or more terminal devices may be included. The communication system shown in FIG. 1 includes a network device 100, a terminal device 102 and a core network 104. Further, Fig. 1 illustrates an external device 106, which is connectable to the terminal device 102 and which is not operating according to the wireless communication system specification, i.e., not according to a specification by which the wireless communication  system operates. For example, when considering a 3GPP wireless communication system, the external device 106 is also referred to as a non-3GPP or non-standard device. In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, a device profile for the external device 106 is stored by the wireless communication system. In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, for a session involving the terminal device 102 and the external device 106, when establishing the session, like a PDU session involving the terminal device 102 and the device 106, one or more preferences of the device 106, which are obtained from the stored device profile, are taken into consideration.

[0127] It is noted that embodiments of the present invention may be applied to various communication systems. For example, a long term evolution (LTE) system, a fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system, a 5G new radio (NR) system, or other future new mobile communication systems.

[0128] In accordance with embodiments, the network device 100 comprises a Radio Access Network (RAN) entity that is configured to transmit or receive signals. For example, the network device 100 may be an evolved base station (evolved NodeB, eNB) , a transmission reception point (TRP) , a next generation base station (next generation NodeB, gNB) in an NR system, or other base stations in future mobile communication systems, or an access node in a wireless fidelity (WiFi) system, etc. The present invention is not limited to specific technologies and specific equipment forms used by network device. The network device may be formed of a centralized unit (CU) and a distributed unit (DU) . The CU may also be called a control unit. The structure of the CU-DU may separate the protocol layers of the network device, such as a base station, and place some protocol layer functions under centralized control on the CU. The remaining part or all protocol layer functions are distributed in the DU, and the CU centrally controls the DU.

[0129] In accordance with embodiments, the terminal device 102 is an entity on the user side for receiving or transmitting signals, such as a mobile phone. The terminal device may also be called terminal device (terminal) , user equipment (user equipment, UE) , mobile station (MS) , mobile terminal device (MT) , etc. The terminal device may be a car with communication functions, a smart car, a mobile phone, a wearable device, a tablet (Pad) , a computer with wireless transceiver functions, a virtual reality (VR) terminal device, an  augmented reality (AR) terminal device, a wireless terminal device in industrial control, a wireless terminal device in self-driving vehicles, a wireless terminal device for remote medical surgery, a wireless terminal device in a smart grid, a wireless terminal device for transportation safety, a wireless terminal device in a smart city, a wireless terminal device in a smart home, etc. The present invention is not limited to a specific technology and a specific equipment form used by the terminal device.

[0130] In accordance with embodiments, the core network (CN) 104 comprises one or more entities, also referred to as CN entities, which communicate with the terminal device 102 using the network device 100. The one or more CN entities implement one or more one or more CN functions, e.g., an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , a Session Management Function (SMF) , a User Plane Function (UPF) , a Unified Data Management (UDM) , a Unified Data Repository (UDR) , a Policy Control Function (PCF) , a Network Exposure Function (NEF) , an Application Function (AF) .

[0131] It is noted the communication system described with reference to Fig. 1 is one example for implementing embodiments of the present invention. However, the present invention is not limited to the communication system described with reference to Fig. 1. As is known by those skilled in the art, with the evolution of system architecture and with emerging new business scenarios, the technical solutions provided in accordance with embodiments of the present invention are also applicable for such new system architecture and new business scenarios.

[0132] Embodiments of the present invention overcome the problems associated with conventional approaches, namely the problem that a non-3GPP device needs its own subscription, by allowing the core network of the wireless communication network, like a 5GC, to identify individual non-standard devices which are connected behind a terminal, like a UE or a 5G-RG. Further, embodiments of the present invention provide for a policy control for a traffic of individual non-3GPP devices, for example by triggering policy control for traffic of an individual non-standard device via certain network functions, for example in case of a non-3GPP device via the PCF and the NEF. This allows, in accordance with embodiments of the present invention, to support concurrent services with different QoS requirements launched by different non-3GPP device.

[0133] In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, a wireless communication network may identify a non-standard device, like a non-3GPP standard, behind a terminal, like a UE or a 5G-RG, by defining a device identifier and using the device identifier during a session establishment or modification procedure. The core network of the wireless communication system may retrieve one or more preferences of the non-standard device which are stored or have been created in the wireless communication network, for example in the core network thereof. In accordance with embodiments, the device identifier may be used during a PDU session establishment or modification procedure so that a PCF of the CN may retrieve specific QoS or policy information associated with the non-standard device which are stored in the core network. In accordance with embodiments, the one or more preferences may be part of a device profile created and stored in the wireless communication network, for example, in the UDR.

[0134] Fig. 2 illustrates a flow diagram of a connection establishment method performed by a user equipment, UE, in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. A UE is connectable to an external device, like a non-3GPP device. When the external device requests a connection to the UE, the UE sends a request for a session involving the non-3GPP device, which includes the device identifier, and receives an acceptance notification if the device is admitted to the network.

[0135] In accordance with embodiments, the connection establishment method, comprises:

[0136] Sending 200, by a user equipment, UE, of a wireless communication system, a session establishment request for establishing a session, wherein the session establishment request includes a device identifier of an external device connected with the UE.

[0137] Receiving 202, by the UE, a notification indicating an acceptance of the session establishment request if the external device is admitted to the wireless communication system.

[0138] Fig. 3 illustrates a flow diagram of a connection establishment method performed by a network entity in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. A network entity receives from a UE, which is connected to an external device, like a non-3GPP device and received from the non-3GPP device a request for a connection for a session  involving the non-3GPP device, a request for the session including the device identifier of the external device. The network entity provides an acceptance notification if the device is admitted to the network.

[0160] In accordance with embodiments, the session establishment request is send to the CN for checking. Foer example, a Packet Data Unit, PDU, session establishment request, is send to the CN of the wireless communication system for determining by the CN if the external device is admitted to the wireless communication system. Fig. 5 illustrates a flow diagram of the sending of the session establishment request through CN functions in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Sending the session establishment  request through the CN functions comprises:

[0161] Sending 500 the session establishment request to the AMF, e.g., via a Radio Access Network, RAN, entity, like a gNB.

[0162] Sending 502, by the AMF, a session management, SM, context creation or update request to the SMF, the context creation or update request including the device identifier.

[0163] In accordance with embodiments, it is determined whether device identifier is in a device profile, e.g., by checking, using the device identifier included in the session establishment request, if the wireless communication system has stored a device profile for the external device.

[0164] In accordance with embodiments, the session establishment request is a request to establish a new session, or a request to modify an ongoing session.

[0165] In accordance with embodiments, the notification is a session establishment accept message causing a session to be established by considering one or more preferences retrieved from the device profile of the external device, or

[0166] In accordance with other embodiments, the notification is a modification command message causing an ongoing session to be modified by considering one or more preferences retrieved from the device profile of the external device.

[0167] Fig. 6 illustrates a flow diagram of determining a request accept message or a modification message in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Determining the request accept message or the modification message comprises:

[0168] Responsive to determining that the wireless communication system has stored a device profile for the external device, obtaining 600 from the device profile of the external device the one or more preferences.

[0169] Determining 602, by the CN, a PDU session establishment accept message or a PDU modification command message taking into consideration the one or more preferences.

[0170] Notifying 604 the PDU session establishment accept message or the PDU modification command message to the UE.

[0171] Fig. 7 illustrates embodiments of the present invention in the context of a 3GPP  wireless communication network, more specifically embodiments implementing a policy control for a non-3GPP device behind the UE or 5G-RG.

[0172] Initially, the non-3GPP device is registered with the wireless communication network by creating and storing by the UDR a device profile which includes certain device information, like a device identifier and device specific preferences, for example device specific policy and / or QoS settings, like routing information and QoS information. For creating the device profile in the 5GC the AF, as is indicated at 1 in Fig. 7, sends a DeviceParameterProvisioning_Create request to the UDR, directly or via the NEF. The request includes the device information, for example a device ID or a MAC address of the device. Further, the request includes specific policy and / or QoS information associated with the non-3GPP device for which the device profile is to be created. As is indicated at 2, the UDR creates the device profile for the non-3GPP device. The created device profile includes the device ID and the specific policy and / or QoS information. The device profile is also associated with a device identifier. In accordance with embodiments, a device ID, like a IMEI or a PEI, which is included in the device information received by the UDR, may be used as the device identifier, i.e., the device ID is used as the device identifier. In accordance with other embodiments, the UDR may allocate a new unique device identifier for the non-3GPP device.

[0173] As is indicated at 3, the UDR sends the DeviceParameterProvisioning_Create response to the AF, directly or via the NEF. The response includes the result of the DeviceParameterProvisioning_Create request send at 1, for example a confirmation that a new profile has been successfully created for the non-3GPP device. If the network, like the UDR, allocated a new device identifier for the non-3GPP device, the response may also include this newly allocated device identifier.

[0174] Once a device profile for a non-3GPP device has been created and stored in the network in a way as described above, this non-3GPP device may connect to the wireless communication network via a terminal or gateway, like a UE or a 5G-RG, once it has been identified, using only the subscription of the UE or 5G-RG for accessing the network.

[0175] In the following, an embodiment for a policy control of a non-3GPP deice is described for which a device profile has been created and stored in the network in the  above-described way.

[0176] At 4, the non-3GPP device initiates a connection with a UE, for example by using a non-3GPP access. Upon initiating the connection, the non-3GPP device also forwards its device identifier which is associated with the device profile of the non-3GPP device stored in the network.

[0177] At 5, the UE sends a PDU session establishment or modification request to the AMF, for example via the gNB serving the UE. The PDU session establishment / modification request includes the device identifier the UE received from the non-3GPP device upon initiating the connection with the UE.

[0178] At 6, the AMF sends a SM context creation or update request to the SMF, which also includes the device identifier.

[0179] At 7, the SMF sends a SM policy control update request to the PFC, which also includes the device identifier.

[0180] At 8, the PCF uses the device identifier for retrieving from the UDR the policy or QoS information from the device profile associated with the device identifier.

[0181] At 9, the PCF sends a SM policy control update response which includes the QoS or policy parameters obtained from the UDR, more specifically from the device profile stored in the UDR which has been accessed using the device identifier.

[0182] At 10, the SMF selects the UPF and establishes a N4 session between the UPF and the SMF taking into consideration the QoS or policy parameters received from the PCF.

[0183] At 11, the SMF sends a SM context creation or update response to the AMF.

[0184] At 12, the SMF sends a N1N2 message transfer to the AMF which includes a PDU session establishment accept message or a PDU modification command message which is forwarded by the AMF to the UE, for example, via the gNB, as is indicated at 13.

[0185] Once the accept or modification message has been received by the UE, the establishment or modification of the session is completed and the operation of the non-3GPP device in accordance with its preferences may be started, for example, a desired policy control or QoS control for the non-3GPP device may be implemented.

[0186] The above-described embodiment assumes that a device profile exists for the  non-3GPP device in the wireless communication network. However, in accordance with other embodiments, no device profile for the non-3GPP device is stored in the wireless communication network, i.e., the non-3GPP device did not register with the wireless communication network. In accordance with other embodiments, the device profile, which has been created for the non-3GPP device, indicates that the non-3GPP device is not authorized to work or operate through the UE to which it made the connection or that it is not authorized to make use of an application running on the UE to which the non-3GPP device is connected. In such cases, in accordance with embodiments, at 8 in Fig. 7, the PCF cannot retrieve the information on the preferences of the non-3GPP device, because there is no device profile stored in the network which is associated with the device identifier included in the SM policy control update request or because it is determined from the device profile that the non-3GPP device is not authorized for operating with the UE to which it is connected or for using the application running on the UE to which it is connected. In such situations, the PDU session establishment / modification will be rejected, for example by sending a corresponding information in the SM policy control update response causing the SMF to send a reject message which is forwarded via the AMF and the gNB to the UE.

[0187] In accordance with embodiments, the reject message may also include reasons for the rejection, for example that the non-3GPP device is not registered with the wireless communication network or is not authorized to use the UE and / or an application running on the UE.

[0188] In accordance with other embodiments, the UE receives a rejection of a session for a non-admitted device.

[0189] Fig. 8 illustrates a flow diagram of a session rejection in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. The session rejection comprises rejecting 800 the session establishment request if the device is not admitted to the wireless communication system.

[0190] In accordance with other embodiments, rejecting the session establishment request comprises providing one or more reasons why the session establishment request is rejected or not allowed.

[0191] In accordance with other embodiments, the one or more reasons comprise one or more of the following:

[0192] The external device in not registered with the wireless communication system.

[0193] No device profile is stored for the external device in the wireless communication system.

[0194] The external device is not an authorized device for the UE or for a requested service.

[0195] In accordance with embodiments, the session establishment request is provided responsive to receiving by the UE a connection request from the external device. The connection request includes the device identifier of the external device.
