[0039] Regarding a multi-modal service, it consists of more than one modal (or type) of data, e.g., tactile, video and audio etc., and there is strong dependency among different types of data. When one modal of data of a multi-modal service fails to be transmitted within the required time, other modal (s) of dependent data of the multi-modal service do not make sense anymore. Thus, the transport link of the multi-modal data, e.g., audio, video and haptic data related to a specific time for an application needs to be guaranteed together. That is, the data packets or QoS flows of a multi-modal service should be handled as a whole, and needs coordinated handling or joint handling, e.g., coordinated transmission or reception at UE and RAN side etc.

[0040] However, there are a mass of issues to be solved to support coordinated handling of multi-modal services. For example, for uplink (UL) multi-modal service coordinated handling, how and what information and / or parameters will be provided for the UE (even the RAN) to enable uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling, and how to enable the adjustment of the information and / or parameters for the uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling at UE side etc., should be solved. Similar issues also need to be solved to support downlink (DL) multi-modal service coordinated handling at RAN side.

[0041] At least considering the aforementioned technical problems, various aspects of the present disclosure propose technical solutions of supporting multi-modal services, especially supporting coordinated or joint handling of multi-modal services.

[0042] For example, from the perspective of UE side, some aspects of the present disclosure propose that UE may receive an MMSID and discard related information associated with the MMSID, e.g., via an application layer signaling, and / or via core network control plane, and / or from RAN. An exemplary MMSID is an explicit indication that flows (e.g., data flows) are related to (or belong to, or are associated to) a multi-modal service. The discard related information may indicate a discard reporting threshold, e.g., one or more of an uplink discard reporting threshold or downlink discard reporting threshold. The uplink discard reporting threshold may be used by the UE to decide when to send a report to the RAN and / or the core network to indicate about excessive discarding associated with the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. Similarly, the downlink discard reporting threshold may be used by the NE to decide when to send a report to the core network to indicate about excessive discarding associated with the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. The uplink and downlink discard reporting thresholds may be the same or different. For example, one discard reporting threshold is configured for the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID, and can be used as both the uplink and downlink discard reporting threshold. In some cases, a discard reporting threshold may be associated with a window, e.g., a time duration for observing or monitoring the discard reporting threshold. Based on the MMSID and the discard related information, UE may determine whether to send a discard report about a multi-modal service identified by the MMSID.

[0043] From the perspective of RAN side, some aspects of the present disclosure propose that a RAN node or NE, e.g., a gNB may receive a MMSID identifying a multi-modal service from a UE or a core network (e.g., from SMF or the like) . Then, the gNB may perform coordinated handling and joint admission control for flows of the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. For example, for uplink coordinated handling and joint admission control for flows of the multi-modal service, in the case of receiving a discard report associated with the MMSID from the UE, the gNB may select or determine a different synchronization threshold (if any) and send the new synchronization threshold to UE update the synchronization threshold currently used at UE side. For downlink coordinated handling and joint admission control for flows of the multi-modal service, the gNB may discard synchronization packets of the flows of the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID based on the associated PDCP discard timer or based on the associated synchronization threshold, or the gNB may refuse to accept the QoS flow of the multi-modal service if other QoS flow’s parameters of the multi-modal service cannot be guaranteed.

[0044] From the perspective of CN side, some aspects of the present disclosure propose that a CN entity, e.g., SMF (or the like) may receive multi-modal service related information from a PCF (or the like) . The multi-modal service related information may indicate a MMSID. The SMF may receive a discard report associated with the MMSID from one or more of the UE or RAN node, and send the discard report associated with the MMSID to the PCF, so that the PCF can coordinate with the application function (AF) (or application server) or the like to adjust the discard related information and or QoS requirements to avoid frequent discard of the packets or flows of multi-modal services, and guarantee the user experience of the multi-modal service. In some cases, the SMF may also need to transmit the corresponding multi-modal service related information to the UE and / or RAN node.

[0045] Aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of a wireless communications system.

[0046] Figure 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communications system 100 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more NE 102, one or more UE 104, and a core network (CN) 106. The wireless communications system 100 may support various radio access technologies. In some  implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 4G network, such as an LTE network or an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. In some other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a NR network, such as a 5G network, a 5G-Advanced (5G-A) network, or a 5G ultrawideband (5G-UWB) network. In other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a combination of a 4G network and a 5G network, or other suitable radio access technology including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi) , IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) , IEEE 802.20. The wireless communications system 100 may support radio access technologies beyond 5G, for example, 6G. Additionally, the wireless communications system 100 may support technologies, such as time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , or code division multiple access (CDMA) , etc.

[0047] The one or more NE 102 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region to form the wireless communications system 100. One or more of the NE 102 described herein may be or include or may be referred to as a network node, a base station, a network element, a network function, a network entity, a radio access network (RAN) , a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB (gNB) , or other suitable terminology. An NE 102 and a UE 104 may communicate via a communication link, which may be a wireless or wired connection. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may perform wireless communication (e.g., receive signaling, transmit signaling) over a Uu interface.

[0048] An NE 102 may provide a geographic coverage area for which the NE 102 may support services for one or more UEs 104 within the geographic coverage area. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may support wireless communication of signals related to services (e.g., voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc. ) according to one or multiple radio access technologies. In some implementations, an NE 102 may be moveable, for example, a satellite associated with a non-terrestrial network (NTN) . In some implementations, different geographic coverage areas 112 associated with the same or different radio access technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas may be associated with different NE 102.

[0049] The one or more UE 104 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region of the wireless communications system 100. A UE 104 may include or may be referred to as a  remote unit, a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a subscriber device, a transmitter device, a receiver device, or some other suitable terminology. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 104 may be referred to as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device, an Internet-of-Everything (IoE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, among other examples.

[0050] A UE 104 may be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs 104 over a communication link. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link 114 may be referred to as a sidelink. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a PC5 interface.

[0051] An NE 102 may support communications with the CN 106, or with another NE 102, or both. For example, an NE 102 may interface with other NE 102 or the CN 106 through one or more backhaul links (e.g., S1, N2, N3, or network interface) . In some implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other directly. In some other implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other or indirectly (e.g., via the CN 106. In some implementations, one or more NE 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) .

[0052] The CN 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The CN 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management functions (AMF) ) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the  control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc. ) for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more NE 102 associated with the CN 106.

[0053] The CN 106 may communicate with a packet data network over one or more backhaul links (e.g., via an S1, N2, N3, or another network interface) . The packet data network may include an application server. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the CN 106 via an NE 102. The CN 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the CN 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the CN 106) .

[0054] In the wireless communications system 100, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures) . The NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0055] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third  subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0056] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0057] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0058] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands,  frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0059] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0060] In 3GPP Release 18, policy control enhancements for multi-modal services were agreed and specified, wherein AF is allowed to provide, at the same time, for each data flow that belongs to the multi-modal service, a MMSID, the service requirements and the QoS monitoring requirements. The PCF may use the related information to derive correct policy control and charging (PCC) rules and to apply appropriate QoS policies for the data flows that are part of a specific multi-modal application. As can be seen, the information and / or parameters associated with the multi-modal service are only provided for the PCF, and not for RAN or UE side. Moreover, except for MMSID, there is no other specific information or parameter can be used for coordinated handling of multi-modal services.

[0061] Different from the legacy, in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure, MMSID and other information and / or parameters related to the multi-modal service, e.g., discard related information (or parameters) may also be provided for the RAN  and UE side, so that the RAN and UE sides are capable of performing the downlink and uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling to guarantee user experience. The uplink and downlink coordinated handling of the multi-modal service are independent, and it is possible that only uplink or only downlink coordinated handling of the multi-modal service is supported and implemented.

[0062] For example, to enable the uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling at UE side, the multi-modal service related information, e.g., MMSID and uplink discard related information associated with the MMSID etc., may be provided for the UE by the core network and / or RAN node. In the case of being provided by the core network, the multi-modal service related information may be provided by the AF (application server) to the UE, either via the core network control plane (e.g., from AF to network exposure function (NEF) (e.g., in the case that the AF is untrusted) , then to PCF, then to SMF, then to AMF and finally to UE) , or via the application layer signaling from the application server to the application client or application layer at UE side. The application layer of the UE may send the received multi-modal service related information to the lower layer of the UE, which is dependent on UE implementations.

[0063] In some cases, e.g., the UE receives the multi-modal service related information from the RAN side and / or via core network control plane, the UE may need to notify the RAN side and / or the core network in advance that it is capable of supporting multi-modal coordinated handling (e.g., uplink multi-modal coordinated handling) . For example, the UE may send a message indicating supporting multi-modal services coordinated handling to one or more of a RAN node or a core network by a multi-modal service support indication.

[0064] The uplink discard related information to the UE may indicate an uplink discard reporting threshold. The uplink discard reporting threshold can be various, e.g., the discard times, or the packets amount or percentage of the packets that are discarded, among the flows of the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. In some implementations of the present disclosure, the uplink discard related information may indicate a window associated with the uplink discard reporting threshold. The uplink discard reporting threshold and the associated window may be configured by a single parameter or separate parameters. For example, an uplink discard reporting threshold is 10 discard times and the associated window is 10ms.  Then, if within a certain period of time (the window) , e.g., 10ms, the UE has implementated discards more than certain times (the uplink discard reporting threshold) , e.g., 10 times, then the UE is triggered to send a discard report to RAN side (e.g., a gNB) and / or core network (e.g., SMF and / or PCF) .

[0065] In the case that the uplink discard reporting threshold and the associated window (if any) are received from the RAN side, the RAN side may obtain them from the AF or operations administration and maintenance (OAM) in advance. UE may send the MMSID to the RAN side, and based on the reported MMSID from the UE, the RAN side may provide the UE with the discard reporting threshold and the associated window.

[0066] The uplink discard related information to the UE may further indicate an uplink synchronization threshold (delay difference threshold) associated with dependent flows of the multi-modal service, which have the same MMSID. Based on the uplink synchronization threshold, the UE can perform coordinated handling for the synchronization packets, e.g., discard or wait for joint delivery, when necessary. The synchronization between different media components, e.g., flows, is critical to user experience, particularly when the delay difference threshold between two or more modalities is less than the latency key performance indicator (KPI) for the related application. For each media component, the delay difference refers to the case where the media component is delayed compard to the other. For example, for coordinated transmission at UE side, the delay difference between two dependent flows should be less than required values, e.g., for immersive multi-modality virtual reality (VR) applications, the synchronization threshold (or delay difference threshold) for visual-tactile is less than 15ms (if the visual data is delayed compared to the tactile) or less than 50ms (if the tactile is delayed compared to the visual) .

[0067] The multi-modal service related information associated with uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling may also be provided for the RAN side, e.g., by UE and / or the core network, so that the RAN side can also perform multi-modal service coordinated handling and joint admission control etc. For example, the UE may transmit the MMSID and / or associated uplink discard related information (e.g., uplink synchronization threshold) to the gNB after receiving them from the AF. For another example, the AF may transmit the MMSID and / or associated uplink discard related information to the gNB via control plane,  which may be from the AF to NEF (e.g., in the case that the AF is untrusted) , then to PCF, then to SMF and finally to the gNB. If necessary, the RAN may further transmit part or all of the received information and / or parameters to the UE.

[0068] To enable the downlink multi-modal service coordinated handling at RAN side, multi-modal service related information, e.g., the MMSID and downlink discard related information associated with the MMSID may be provided for the RAN side, e.g., by UE and / or core network (e.g., via control plane as illustrated above) . For example, the UE may receive part or all of the MMSID and downlink discard related information associated with the MMSID from the core network (e.g., AF) , and then transmit them to the RAN side. For another example, the RAN side may receive part or all of the MMSID and downlink discard related information associated with the MMSID from the core network (e.g., AF) via control plane.

[0069] Similarly, the downlink discard related information to the RAN side may indicate a downlink discard reporting threshold. The downlink discard reporting threshold can be various, e.g., the discard times, or the packets amount or percentage of the packets that are discarded, among the flows of the multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. In some implementations of the present disclosure, the downlink discard related information may indicate a window associated with the downlink discard reporting threshold. The downlink discard reporting threshold and the associated window may be configured by a single parameter or separate parameters, which may be provided by the AF or the OAM. The downlink discard related information to the RAN may further indicate downlink synchronization threshold associated with dependent flows of the multi-modal service, which have the same MMSID.

[0070] Both the uplink discard related information and the downlink discard related information may further indicate alternative synchronization thresholds (synchronization thresholds as alternatives or options for updating or replacing a currently used one) , so that a current used synchronization threshold can be changed (or updated or switched) to a different one if necessary, e.g., based on a related discard report. In the case that there are multiple alternative synchronization thresholds, they may be arranged in a prioritized order. For example, the UE may discard synchronization packets of a multi-modal service based on an  uplink synchronization threshold. Then, based on the corresponding discard reporting threshold and window, the UE may send a discard report to the RAN side. Based on the received discard report, the RAN may determine or select an uplink synchronization threshold from the alternative uplink synchronization thresholds, e.g., based on the prioritized order, which is different from the currently used one at the UE side, and then indicate the newly selected uplink synchronization threshold with the MMSID to UE to update the currently used one at the UE side.

[0071] In some implementations of the present disclosure, the synchronization threshold (uplink cases and downlink cases) may be used as a QoS parameter and the alternative synchronization thresholds may be used as alternative QoS parameters. Based on the corresponding discard report (from the UE or generated at the RAN side) , the RAN may switch from a currently used synchronization threshold to a different synchronization threshold, e.g., falling back from the current QoS profile with a currently used synchronization threshold to an alternative QoS profile with a different synchronization threshold in a prioritized order of QoS profiles (or prioritized order of synchronization thresholds) .

[0072] The multi-modal service related information associated with the same MMSID for uplink and downlink multi-modal service coordinated handling may be the same or different, partially or all. In some cases, there may be only one multi-modal service related information, not distinguishing uplink multi-modal service related information (for uplink multi-modal service coordinated handling) and downlink multi-modal service related information (for downlink multi-modal service coordinated handling) .

[0073] Hereinafter, more specific implementations in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure will be illustrated to help understand the technical solutions of the present disclosure, which mainly considers the support for uplink coordinated handling of multi-modal services at UE side for simplification and clarity. It is assumed that the same multi-modal service related information, e.g., MMSID and discard related information etc., is applied for both uplink and / or downlink multi-modal service coordinated handling.

[0074] Figure 2 illustrates an example of coordinated handling of multi-modal services in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0075] Referring to Figure 2, at step 201, the PCF (or the like) may receive, e.g., from the AF (or the like) via Nnef_AFsessionWithQoS message, the UE address, AF ID, flow descriptions, and multi-modal service related information etc. For each concerned multi-modal service, the multi-modal service related information may include the associated MMSID and discard related information etc. If the AF is an untrusted AF, the PCF may receive the related information and / or parameters via the NEF (not shown) . For example, the NEF may firstly authorize the AF request by interacting with unified data management (UDM) (not shown) , then query the binding support function (BSF) (not shown) to find the corresponding PCF for the UE based on the UE address or local configuration, and then forward the related information and / or parameters from the AF to the selected PCF.

[0076] It is assumed that the PCF (and SMF) has received the multi-modal support indication from the UE, e.g., at step 203 via AMF (not shown) , known that the UE supports the multi-modal service coordinated handling, and decided to transmit the multi-modal service related information associated with uplink coordinated handling to UE via the control plane. In addition, the PCF decides to send the multi-modal service related information associated with uplink and / or downlink coordinated handling to the RAN side via the control plane.

[0077] Based on the received information, the PCF may derive and generate PCC rules. The PCF may send the multi-modal service related information to the UE and / or RAN node, e.g., via the SMF, included in the corresponding PCC rules or separate from the corresponding PCC rule (s) .

[0078] For example, it is assumed that the multi-modal service related information to the UE and gNB is included in the corresponding PCC rule (s) sent from the PCF to the SMF, including the MMSID, the synchronization threshold (e.g., as QoS parameters) , the discard reporting threshold and window, and alternative synchronization thresholds (e.g., as alternative QoS parameters) . The PCF may send the PCC rule (s) to the SMF at step 205. The SMF may perform the binding of the received PCC rule (s) including the multi-modal service related information to QoS flows based on the QoS and service requirements. Then, the SMF may assign a QoS flow identifier (QFI) for each new QoS flow, and derive the QoS profile (e.g., including the synchronization threshold) , alternative QoS profile (e.g., including the  alternative synchronization threshold) , and corresponding UPF instructions etc., from the PCC rule (s) bound to the QoS flow and other information provided by the PCF.

[0079] Then, at step 207a, the SMF may send the related QFI, MMSID, the synchronization threshold, the discard reporting threshold and the associated window to the UE, which can be used for uplink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at UE side. For example, the SMF may send the N1 SM message to the UE via the AMF by invoking Namf_Communication_N1N2MessageTransfer containing the information mentioned above. The MMSID is used to indicate that the QoS flow is a part of the multi-modal service.

[0080] At step 207b, the SMF may send the QoS profile, the alternative QoS profile, QFI and MMSID to the RAN node via control plane, which is for uplink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at UE side and downlink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at RAN side. In addition, the SMF may also send discard reporting threshold and the associated window at least for downlink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at RAN side. In the case that there is no downlink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at RAN side, or the uplink and downlink discard reporting threshold and the associated windows are different, the SMF may optionally send the (uplink) discard reporting threshold and the associated window to the RAN side in some implementations of the present disclosure.

[0081] At step 209, the UE may receive the uplink flows from the application, and perform coordinated handling (e.g., discard or wait for joint delivery when necessary) on the received uplink flows based on the obtained MMSID and associated discard related information etc. For example, the UE may take certain actions to guarantee the joint handling of all the multi-modal flows or packets within one multi-modal service (or group) , and provide reasonable and acceptable user experience, e.g., wait for the dependent multi-modal flows to come and deliver together, or discard the dependent ones if the synchronization threshold cannot be met.

[0082] There may be various discard solutions, which one will be used may be dependent on UE implementations or configured by RAN side. For example, in some implementations of the present disclosure, the UE may discard the synchronization packets of the flows of the same multi-modal service based on the MMSID and the synchronization threshold. If the  transmission time interval, or relative delay difference of two QoS flows, e.g., the tactile service and the audio service of the same multi-modal service identified by the MMSID, becomes longer than the specified synchronization threshold, then UE will discard the identified synchronization packets of the two QoS flows. In some other implementations of the present disclosure, the UE may discard the synchronization packets of the flows of the same multi-modal service based on the MMSID and the PDCP discard timer associated with the multi-modal service. When the PDCP discard timer expires and some packets of the QoS flow are discarded, the related packets of other QoS flow (s) identified by the MMSID will also be discarded. In the case that the PDCP discard timer is used for determination of discarding the synchronization packets, the synchronization threshold (and alternative synchronization threshold) may not be necessary for UE.

[0083] The UE may further determine whether to send a discard report based on the discard reporting threshold and the associated window (if any) . When the discard reporting threshold is met (surpass or equal, which is based on UE implementation, or predefined) within the associated window, UE may decide to send a report of the discarding associated with the MMSID to the RAN node at step 211a, and / or directly to the core network (e.g., to the PCF via the SMF by a non-access stratum message) at step 211b. For example, UE may count the discard times within the observing window for the same multi-modal service identified by the MMSID. When the discard times (how many times the discard behaviors are implemented) are above the threshold within the window (e.g., 100 ms) , UE may generate and send a discard report to the RAN side and / or directly to the core network.

[0084] After receiving the discard report from the UE, the RAN node may further send it to the core network (e.g., to the PCF via the SMF) , e.g., in the case that the UE sends to the PCF indirectly via the RAN side. In some implementations of the present disclosure, the RAN node may send the received discard report to the UPF (not shown) via user plane. The UPF may use the discard information (e.g., the amount or percentage of how many packets have been discarded within the QoS flow) to report to the charging function (CHF) (not shown) , so that the CHF can determine the correct charging amount.

[0085] On the other hand, in the case that the discard is based on the synchronization threshold and there are alternative synchronization thresholds configured for the uplink  coordinated handling of multi-modal service at UE side, based on the discard report from the UE, which indicates that the synchronization threshold used at the UE side is not appropriate, the RAN node may fall back to an alternative QoS profile that includes an alternative synchronization threshold and, e.g., based on the prioritized order at step 213, and then send the updated synchronization threshold to the UE with the MMSID at step 215. If the QNC is also enabled in the PCC rules and provided for the RAN node, the RAN node may also send the reference index of the alternative QoS profile (or the alternative synchronization threshold) to which the RAN node falls back, to the PCF via SMF at step 217, which may be sent with the discard report together or separately.

[0086] If there is no matched or available alternative synchronization thresholds (all have been used and are inappropriate or no alternative synchronization threshold is configured) , at step 217, the RAN node may send a notification related to the multi-modal service towards the core network (e.g., to the PCF via the SMF) , indicating that QoS requirements for flows of the multi-modal service cannot be guaranteed, or coordinated handling for the multi-modal service is not functioning well or the like. For example, like legacy, the RAN node may send a notification that the "GFBR can no longer be guaranteed"towards the SMF indicating that no alternative QoS profile is appropriate for uplink coordinated handling at UE. Similarly, the notification related to the multi-modal service may be sent with the discard report together or separately.

[0087] It is similar for downlink coordinated handling of multi-modal service at RAN side. For example, the RAN node may receive the downlink flows from the application, and perform coordinated handling (e.g., discard or wait for joint delivery etc., when necessary) joint admission control etc., on the received downlink flows based on the obtained MMSID and the associated discard related information etc. The RAN node may determine whether to discard synchronization packets with the same MMSID based on the synchronization threshold or the PDCP discard timer etc., which is based on RAN implementations. The RAN node may generate a discard report based on the discard reporting threshold (and window if any) and send the discard report to the core network, e.g., to the PCF (e.g., via SMF) and / or CHF (e.g., UPF) etc. In the case that the discard is based on the synchronization threshold and there are alternative synchronization thresholds configured for the downlink coordinated  handling of multi-modal service at RAN side, the RAN node may fall back to an alternative QoS profile that includes an alternative synchronization threshold in the case that the discard report indicates that the synchronization threshold used at the RAN side is not appropriate. If there is no matched or available alternative synchronization thresholds, the RAN node may send a notification related to the multi-modal service towards the core network, indicating that QoS requirements for flows of the multi-modal service cannot be guaranteed, or coordinated handling for the multi-modal service is not functioning well or the like.

[0088] Based on the feedback information, e.g., the discard report or notification from the RAN node and / or the UE, the PCF may notify the AF about the inappropriate state of the delay difference threshold at the UE and / or the RAN side for uplink and / or downlink coordinated handling at step 219. The AF may adjust and send the updated uplink and / or downlink synchronization threshold to the PCF at step 221, which is associated with the MMSID. In some other implementations of the present disclosure, the AF may adjust and send to the PCF the updated uplink and / or downlink discard reporting threshold and the associated window. In some yet other implementations of the present disclosure, the AF may adjust and send to the PCF the updated uplink and / or downlink QoS requirement (e.g., the packet delay budget, PDB) , for a separate flow of the multi-modal service) . In some cases, the AF may adjust two or more of the aforementioned parameters (or values) simultaneously, or adjust other related parameter (s) . In some cases, the AF may directly send the updated parameters (or values) , e.g., the updated synchronization threshold and / or discard report threshold etc., to the UE via application layer signaling.

[0089] The PCF may correspondingly send the updated value (s) received from the AF with the MMSID to the UE and / or the RAN node respectively at step 223a and step 223b. If necessary, the RAN node may further send the updated values to the UE, e.g., the updated synchronization threshold and / or discard report threshold etc., for uplink coordinated handling of the multi-modal service. In some cases, if necessary, the UE may further send the updated values to the RAN node, e.g., the updated synchronization threshold at least for uplink coordinated handling of the multi-modal service.

[0090] After receiving the updated values, the UE and RAN node will use the updated values for the uplink and / or downlink coordinated handling of the multi-modal service, which is identical or similar to the above illustrated and will not repeat.

[0091] Figure 3 illustrates an example of a UE 300 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The UE 300 may include a processor 302, a memory 304, a controller 306, and a transceiver 308. The processor 302, the memory 304, the controller 306, or the transceiver 308, or various combinations thereof or various components thereof may be examples of means for performing various aspects of the present disclosure as described herein. These components may be coupled (e.g., operatively, communicatively, functionally, electronically, electrically) via one or more interfaces.

[0092] The processor 302, the memory 304, the controller 306, or the transceiver 308, or various combinations or components thereof may be implemented in hardware (e.g., circuitry) . The hardware may include a processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , or other programmable logic device, or any combination thereof configured as or otherwise supporting a means for performing the functions described in the present disclosure.

[0093] The processor 302 may include an intelligent hardware device (e.g., a general-purpose processor, a DSP, a CPU, an ASIC, an FPGA, or any combination thereof) . In some implementations, the processor 302 may be configured to operate the memory 304. In some other implementations, the memory 304 may be integrated into the processor 302. The processor 302 may be configured to execute computer-readable instructions stored in the memory 304 to cause the UE 300 to perform various functions of the present disclosure.
