Description

[0001] TITLE

[0002] Method of advanced condition-based model signaling

[0003] TECHNNICAL FIELD

[0004] The present disclosure relates to AI / ML based model version selection, where techniques for pre-configuring and signaling the specific information about selecting a specific model version applicable to radio access network are presented.

[0005] BACKGROUND

[0006] In 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project), one of the selected study items as the approved Release 18 package is AI / ML (artificial intelligence / machine learning) as described in the related document (RP-213599) addressed in 3GPP TSG (Technical Specification Group) RAN (Radio Access Network) meeting #94e. The official title of AI / ML study item is “Study on AI / ML for NR Air Interface”. The goal of this study item is to identify a common AI / ML framework and areas of obtaining gains using AI / ML based techniques with use cases. According to 3GPP, the main objective of this study item is to study AI / ML framework for air-interface with target use cases by considering performance, complexity, and potential specification impact. In particular, AI / ML model, terminology and description to identify common and specific characteristics for framework are included as one of key work scopes. Regarding AI / ML framework, various aspects are under consideration for investigation and one of key items is about lifecycle management of AI / ML model where multiple stages are included as mandatory for model training, model deployment, model inference, model monitoring, model updating etc. Currently, AI / ML specification work is at the stage of work item discussion for Release 19. Earlier, in 3GPP TR 37.817 for Release 17, titled as Study on enhancement for Data Collection for NR and EN-DC, UE (user equipment) mobility was also considered as one of AI / ML use cases and one of scenarios for model training / inference is that both functions are located within RAN node. Followingly, in Release 18 the new work item of “Artificial Intelligence (AI)ZMachine Learning (ML) for NG-RAN” was initiated to specify data collection enhancements and signaling support within existing NG-RAN interfaces and architecture. For the above active standardization works, RAN-based AI / ML model is considered very significant for both network and UE to meet any desired model operations (e.g., model training, inference, selection, switching, update, monitoring, etc.). Model information can be signaled to pair both networkside and UE-side models for various lifecycle management (LCM) operations.

[0007] However, signaling overhead indicating model information can be very high especially when model based LCM is processed between base station (BS / gNB) and multiple UEs. In LCM, model training is one of the most important parts for model deployment and currently there is no specification defined for signaling methods and network-UE behaviors so as to identify the required dataset when model updating / re- training as any activated model can be also impacted due to model / data drift. When ML condition changes, the enabled AI / ML model(s) can be impacted for model performance due to data / model drift. In this case, model re-training / updating can be executed. For example, when the trained ML model is deployed in RAN, model performance for inferencing can be easily degraded if target ML condition is not well aligned with real ML condition measured for specific model operation.

[0088] Unsupervised learning is a process of training model without labelled data.

[0089] Proprietary-format models is ML models of vendor-Zdevice-specific proprietary format, from 3GPP perspective. They are not mutually recognizable across vendors and hide model design information from other vendors when shared.

[0090] Open-format models is ML models of specified format that are mutually recognizable across vendors and allow interoperability, from 3GPP perspective. They are mutually recognizable between vendors and do not hide model design information from other vendors when shared.

[0091] The following explanation will provide the detailed description of the mechanism about pre-configuring and signaling the specific information about model online training by configuring a set of UE behaviors. AI / ML based techniques are currently applied to many different applications and 3GPP also started to work on its technical investigation to apply to multiple use cases based on the observed potential gains. AI / ML lifecycle can be split into several stages such as data collection / pre- processing, model training, model testing / validation, model deployment / update, model monitoring etc., where each stage is equally important to achieve target performance with any specific model(s). In applying AI / ML model for any use case or application, one of the challenging issues is to manage the lifecycle of AI / ML model. It is mainly because the data / model drift occurs during model deployment / inference and it results in performance degradation of AI / ML model.

[0092] Fundamentally, the dataset statistical changes occur after model is deployed and model inference capability is also impacted with unseen data as input. In a similar aspect, the statistical property of dataset and the relationship between input and output for the trained model can be changed with drift occurrence. In this context, model training or re-training is one of key issues for model performance maintenance as model performance such as inferencing and / or training is dependent on different model execution environment with varying configuration parameters.

[0093] To handle this issue, collaboration between UE and gNB is highly important to track model performance and re-configure model corresponding to different environments. AI / ML model needs model monitoring after deployment because model performance cannot be maintained continuously due to drift and update feedback is then provided to re-train / update the model or select alternative model.

[0094] When AI / ML model enabled wireless communication network is deployed, it is then important to consider how to handle AI / ML model in activation with re-configuration for wireless devices under operations such as model training, inference, updating, etc. In this method, a finite set of multiple model versions and the associated ML condition measurement information are pre-configured to form mapping relation (e.g., a finite set of AI / ML models, each associated with specific condition measurement). The index or ID information can be also configured to represent mapping relation. ML condition measurements can be configurable for different applications and deployment scenarios, where in general information about ML scenario / application, ML configuration, ML model / functionality (e.g., model performance metric), dataset (e.g., data drift, data quality), LCM phases, environmental status (e.g., site, location, radio link quality, mobility status), and / or device ML support status (e.g., ML execution capability status) can be included in defining ML condition measurements. These ML condition measurements help in determining AI / ML model switching, updating, re-training, etc. The network (e.g., gNB) or UE are then allowed to monitor one or more of these condition measurements to dynamically select, activate, or update the appropriate AI / ML model. A finite set of ML model versions can be configured and maintained for different ML model IDs with the associated ML condition measurement sets. Therefore, AI / ML condition measurement set includes any combination(s) of model performance condition measurements (e.g., including inference accuracy, confidence scores, false positive / negative rates, and model drift detection), model execution condition measurements (e.g., including inference latency, computational resource usage, and memory consumption), radio network quality condition measurements (e.g., including SINR, RSRP, RSRQ, CQI, and BLER), mobility condition measurements (e.g., including handover status, UE mobility state), UE device capability condition measurements (e.g., including computing resource, available memory, battery level, inference acceleration, and thermal state), environmental condition measurements (e.g., including geolocation data), LCM condition measurements (e.g., including historical performance data, LCM phase triggers, and model switching thresholds). For specific ML model based applications and functionalities, each model can maintain different sets of versions based on historical / statistical data in association with training / updating / inferencing records. In one aspect, different model versions can have different sets of condition measurement executed for model performance updates and / or different (device / environmental or ML) conditions. The pre-configured mapping relation information can be provided via system information or dedicated RRC signaling. And the indication message of selection of the specific mapping relation information can be sent via L1 / L2 or RRC signaling where index or ID can be used for indication if necessary. For example, a specific model version is sent to UE by network side and the associated condition set is measured accordingly. As another example, different model versions indicate the associated condition measurement changes made (compared with the previous version) and when the requested condition measurement is reflected to a specific model version, only confirmation message is sent with the indicated model version information as well.

[0095] Additionally, condition measurement set can be configured to set target condition measurement for each model versions where ML related parameter information can be set to indicate ML condition and / or model performance quality. Depending on implementation of mapping relation information between model versions and condition measurements, historical data of condition measurement and / or indication of delta information about condition measurement between model ID versions can be also configured for mapping relation. Depending on deployment scenarios, a number of different mapping relation tables can be configured for specific applications and / or functionalities in association with any specific model type / category or model ID. Either network side or UE side can generate the mapping relation information so that any necessary update signaling can be exchanged between both sides if necessary (depending on one-side model or two-side model). For example, when model version is received at UE, the associated condition measurement can be performed or skipped if there is condition measurement update made for the indicated model ID version. As another example, if a model switch is required, the network side (e.g., gNB) selects an appropriate model version based on the reported condition measurements and historical performance records so that the new AI / ML model selection is transmitted with activation indication message to the UE via RRC reconfiguration or L1 or L2 signaling.

[0096] Figure 1 shows an exemplary table of mapping relation information for ML model version with the associated condition measurement set. In this example, a finite set of multiple model versions and the associated condition measurement information are pre-configured to form mapping relation. A finite set of ML model versions can be also configured and maintained for different ML model IDs with the associated ML condition measurement sets. For specific ML model based applications and functionalities, each model can maintain different sets of versions based on historical / statistical data in association with training / updating / inferencing records.

[0097] Figure 2 shows an exemplary block diagram of ML model version signaling for condition measurement. In this example, a specific model version is sent to UE so that UE can measure the associated ML condition set in mapping relation with the indicated model version.

[0098] Figure 3 shows an exemplary flow chart of mapping relation configuration at network side. In this example, mapping relation between ML model versions and the associated condition measurement sets is configured to provide to the other side in communication.

[0099] Figure 4 shows an exemplary flow chart of model version selection for condition measurement at UE side. In this example, specific mapping relation can be selected so that the associated condition measurement be performed or skipped for the selected model version. Depending on implementation of mapping relation information between model versions and condition measurements, the mapped condition measurement set can be measured for update reporting or skipped for condition measurement if the indicated model version meets the associated target condition measurement.

[0100] Figure 5 shows an exemplary signaling flow of ML condition measurement using model version indication. In this example, UE performs ML condition measurement based on the model version indicated by network side. In some cases, UE can also update the indicated model version information to network side so that both sides can be aligned for using the same model version information based on condition measurement update.
