Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to apparatuses, methods and computer readable storage medium for service selection and access node selection. In a method, a first apparatus receives a network request for a terminal device served by a first access node in a radio access network (RAN). The first apparatus obtains RAN measurement information related to candidate access nodes, network information related to network resources between candidate user plane functions (UPFs) and candidate service instances, and computing information related to the candidate service instances. The first apparatus determines, for the terminal device, at least one combination each consisting of an access node, a UPF, a service instance, and a delivery path between the UPF and the service instance. The first apparatus transmits, to the first access node, indication information indicating at least one access node in the at least one combination.

[0044] The concept of Computing and Network Convergence (CNC) has arisen to facilitate the efficient coordination and management of computing and network resources. CNC involves the collaborative optimization of both computing and network resources, achieved through a comprehensive understanding and control of these interconnected assets. The concept of CNC comes from Computing Force Network (CFN) , Computing Aware Network (CAN) , etc., this may enable the convergence between computing domain and network domain. Now it has been considered as an important technology in the sixth generation (6G) .

[0045] The main international standardization organizations (e.g., International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) , Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) , China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) and the third generation partnership project (3GPP) ) have started the related works. For example, ITU-T released recommendation ITU-T Y. 2501 in 2021. IETF established a new working group Computing-Aware Traffic Steering (CATS) in 2023. CCSA has also worked on a serial work-items for CNC. 3GPP has begun some work about this topic.

[0046] Traditional networks separate computing resources and services from network technologies, resulting in inefficiencies like lower network utilization, imbalanced computing power usage, and lower Quality of Experience (QoE) for certain services. CNC aims to merge computing and network domains, improving network efficiency and service delivery. International standardization organizations like ITU-T, IETF, CCSA, and 3GPP have initiated work in this area. The Next G Alliance envisions 6G to integrate communication, computing, and data to create a distributed cloud. Presently, mobile network access point selection relies on Radio Access Network (RAN) information such as signal strength and capacity, but the focus is shifting toward CNC for enhanced network performance.

[0047] Some main operators have shown great enthusiasm on CNC. Some full-service operators which have not only mobile network, but also transport network (Internet Protocol (IP) domain) and huge amount of computing resources, have made CNC as their strategy direction, and put great effort on it. Furthermore, some operators also have proposed the concept of 6G distributed computing, and proposed control plane (C-plane) for computing service reserving computing resource for UE and deploy applications on the distributed computing resources along with UE registration and / or PDU session establishment. 6G C-plane for computing service directly works together with  communication service control functions.

[0048] The industry has taken computing force network or related concept as one of important feature in 6G. In addition, Next G Alliance of ATIS also states that the 6G distributed cloud and communications system is expected to fundamentally expand mobile system capabilities and services from being communication-centric to becoming communication-computing-data centric. A tighter integration between communication and computing is expected to achieve a wide-area distributed cloud across mobile device compute, network compute, and data centers.

[0049] In short, network and compute convergence has gotten more and more investigation, it’s sure it’s a feature in next generation networks.

[0050] Current gNB selection in mobile network is based only on RAN information and current service selection is an overlay method. Specifically, in current mobile network, access node (e.g., base station, xNB such as eNB, gNB) is normally selected based on RAN information. The RAN information includes signal strength (e.g., Reference Signal Receiving Power (RSRP) ) , capacity, and load of each access-point / cell. After selecting the access node, a RAN connection is established, then a PDU session is established on this RAN connection. Over this PDU session, UE gets its desired service from some computing nodes (C-node) , or computing sites.

[0051] Service selection (e.g., CATS) in the prior art is only based on computing service metrics and transport network metrics between user plane function (UPF) and service instance. In the current mobility management, network access node (e.g., base station, xNB such as eNB, gNB) selection is only based on RAN information (e.g., signal strength, quality of air interface, load of cell) . The initial selection of an access node, such as a base station or gNB, typically relies on RAN information encompassing factors like signal strength (e.g., reference signal received power, RSRP) , capacity, and load across various access points or cells. Once the access point is chosen, a RAN connection is established, followed by the establishment of a packet data unit (PDU) session on this connection. Within this PDU session, the user UE accesses its desired services from a computing node, whether it's a C-node or a computing site, facilitating efficient data exchange and network connectivity.

[0052] In another scenario, the selection of access nodes during handovers in current mobile networks also relies solely on RAN information, without taking into account  computing service metrics or end-to-end network metrics, which encompass transport network measurements.

[0053] FIG. 1 illustrates an example diagram 100 of service selection and access node selection. As illustrated, xNB-1 101 has a higher RSRP for a terminal device 103, and although xNB-2 102 has a lower RSRP but good enough for communication, xNB-1 101 is selected for the terminal device 103 to attach to the RAN network. It is noted that “xNB” refers to an access node, e.g., gNB, eNB, or the like. An Integrated Network &Compute (INC) 104 may obtain computing metrics and transport network metrics between UPF and computing sites. Depending on the relative RSRPs measured in the RAN network, a path of option 1 105 is selected, then a PDU session is established via the selected access node (here is xNB-1 101) . Over this connection, the terminal device 103 gets its desired service from some C-nodes, or computing sites (e.g., service instance 106 in edge cloud 107) . However, the option 1 105 has longer service delay and more network resource consumption. In fact, from a view of global optimization, a path of option 2 108 has less overall resource consumption and lower service delay via xNB-2 102 which has lower RSRP. Thus, it is better for the terminal device 103 to select xNB-2 102 for access so that it can further get service through the path of option 2 108 via xNB-2 102.

[0054] Furthermore, in current mobile network, access node selection in handover is only based on RAN information, but no computing service metric and end-to-end network metrics (including transport network metrics) . As the option 1 105 shown in FIG. 1, xNB-1 101 is selected based on the optimal RAN information (e.g., higher RSRP) , the terminal device 103 gets its service via this xNB. However, this may lead to longer service delay and more network resource consumption. In fact, there may exist this kind of scenario: a UE may reach another access point with lower RSRP but the quality of the air-interface is good enough to support the communication, and the C-node connected near to this access point has UE desired service instance. It’s obvious that it’s better for UE to connect to this access point to directly visit the desired service in this C-node. As shown in FIG. 1, the option 2 107 has less overall resource consumption and lower service delay.

[0055] As discussed, the selection of services relies on computing metrics and network metrics between UPF and service instance only and no RAN information is considered for service selection. On the other hand, the selection of access nodes during handovers relies solely on RAN information, without taking into account computing service metrics or end-to-end network metrics, which encompass transport network measurements. FIG. 2  illustrates an example process 200 of service selection in such as way. As illustrated, no RAN information has been taken into consideration, and the final selection may not be the optimal combination of <xNB, UPF and service instance>. FIG. 3 illustrates an example process 300 of handover in 3GPP. As illustrated, only RAN information has been taken into consideration during handover preparation phase.

[0056] Example embodiments of the present disclosure propose a service selection and access node selection solution. In this solution, a first apparatus receives a network request for a terminal device served by a first access node in a RAN. The first apparatus obtains RAN measurement information related to candidate access nodes for the terminal device in the RAN, network information related to network resources between candidate user plane functions (UPFs) and candidate service instances for the terminal device, and computing information related to the candidate service instances. The first apparatus determines, for the terminal device, at least one combination each consisting of an access node, a UPF, a service instance, and a delivery path between the UPF and the service instance through joint optimal selection amongst the candidate access nodes, the candidate UPFs, and the candidate service instances based on the RAN measurement information, the network information, and the computing information. The first apparatus transmits, to the first access node, indication information indicating at least one access node in the at least one combination.

[0057] In this way, an optimal combination may be selected based on not only RAN information but also network information and computing information. Therefore, the combination may have less overall resource consumption and lower service delay.

[0058] Embodiments of the present disclosure focus on proposing the optimal service selection based on the optimal end-to-end combination of (access node, UPF, and service instance) . This selection is based on not only RAN information but also the computing information (e.g., the needed service information, location information, network topology) and network information, achieving an overall optimal selection in both the RAN and the network where the service instances are deployed.

[0059] Embodiments of modules included in the core network (CN) will be described with respect to FIG. 4, which illustrates an example diagram 400 of modules in the CN in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated, a CNC 430 may be added to the CN to support the proposed end-to-end optimal combination  selection. The CNC 430 is configured to maintain the resource distribution map for this computing-network domain. The resource distribution map includes the distribution of each service in the compute-network domain (i.e., service instance for each service, current status) , network resources (e.g., network topology, available network bandwidth and delay on each link) . In addition, the CNC 430 may respond the query from other modules, e.g., Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) 410 and Session Management Function (SMF) 420, to provide them with the related network information and computing information.

[0060] According to some example embodiments, the SMF 420 may be added a function to perform the proposed end-to-end optimal combination selection for <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance >. The end-to-end optimal combination selection is based on RAN information (e.g., quality of air interface, cell load) , network metrics between access node and UPF, network metrics between UPF and service instance, and computing information (i.e., service instances and related information, e.g., current load, available capability) . According to some example embodiments, the AMF 410 may be added a function to perform the proposed end-to-end optimal combination selection for <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance >.

[0061] Embodiments of the present disclosure propose two service selection procedures based on RAN, computing, and network information. One procedure is SMF 420 as the decision maker, the other is AMF 410 as the decision maker. In some example embodiments, some decision making functions may be integrated to AMF 410.

[0062] Furthermore, embodiments of the present disclosure propose to implement access node selection based multi-factors including on RAN information, computing information, and if possible, E2E network information between UE and different instance of the desired service. The access node selection is done along the optimal E2E combination selection <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > based on RAN, computing, and E2E network information.

[0063] During the handover preparation phase, a UE is requested to report neighboring access node measurement information to the current access node, which will be sent including other RAN information (e.g., cell load) to AMF 410 and / or SMF 420 to do end-to-end optimal combination selection.

[0064] The end-to-end optimal combination selection of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > will be based on the information sent from RAN, computing information and E2E network information obtained from CNC 430 by SMF 420.

[0065] In some example embodiments, CNC 430 may maintain the resource distribution map including the distribution of each service in the compute-network domain (i.e., service instance for each service, current status) , network resources (i.e., network topology, network metrics between UE’s reachable access node and UPF, network metrics between UPF and service instance, e.g., available network bandwidth and delay on each link) . The end-to-end optimal combination selection may obtain a ranked and limited list of best selected access nodes, which will be returned to the current access node. Then, the current access node may make the final handover decision based on the ranked and limited list of best selected access node.

[0066] Embodiments of the present disclosure propose two access node selection procedures based on the multi-factors including RAN, computing, and network information. One procedure is SMF 420 as the decision maker, the other is AMF 410 as the decision maker.

[0067] The solution in embodiments of the present disclosure may be an extension that is backward compatible with the existing handover technique which is mobile network will advertise its capability to support end-to-end joint optimal selection. UE may choose to participate either this kind of access node selection in handover or normal existing handover.

[0068] FIG. 5 illustrates a signaling diagram 500 for service selection and access node selection in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 500 involves a terminal device 501, a first access node 502, a first apparatus 503 and a second apparatus 504.

[0069] For purpose of discussion, some example embodiments are described where the first apparatus 503 is or is comprised in the AMF 410 or SMF 420 in the CN in FIG. 4 and the second apparatus 504 is or is comprised in the CNC 430.

[0070] In operation, the first apparatus 503 receives (515) a network request for a terminal device 501 served by a first access node (sometimes also referred to as “current  access node” ) 502 in the RAN. The first access node 502 is the network that is currently accessed by the terminal device 501.

[0071] The first apparatus 503 obtains (535) the RAN measurement information related to candidate access nodes (sometimes also referred to as “reachable access node” ) for the terminal device 501 in the RAN, network information related to network resources between candidate UPFs and candidate service instances for the terminal device 501, and computing information related to the candidate service instances.

[0072] The RAN measurement information may be provided by the first access node 502. The RAN measurement information indicates the channel quality between a candidate access node and the terminal device 501 within the RAN. The candidate access nodes may be the access nodes that are reachable and accessed by the terminal device 501, which may be neighboring access nodes of the first access node 502. By way of example, the RAN measurement information may include signal strength (e.g., RSRP) , capacity, quality of air interface load of each candidate access node or cell, etc.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 503 may determine the candidate UPFs (sometimes also referred to as “reachable UPFs” ) that are reachable from the candidate access nodes of the terminal device 501. The candidate UPFs are those that can be selected for establishing a service session with a service instance via a corresponding access node. Then the first apparatus 503 may transmit a network-compute information request to the second apparatus 504 (which is corresponding to a CNC function, e.g., the CNC 430 in FIG. 4) . The network-compute information request may indicate the candidate UPFs and a Service-ID of the candidate service instances. Then, the first apparatus 503 may receive, from the second apparatus 504, the network information related to network resources between candidate UPFs and candidate service instances for the terminal device 501 and the computing information related to the candidate service instances. Here, candidate service instances may those that are deployed in the network to provide the service as identified by the Service-ID.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 504 may maintain (510) a computing resource distribution map and a network resource distribution map for a network associated with a RAN. Service instances of one or more services used by the terminal device 501 are deployed in this network (which may be a CNC network) , UPFs are connected and routed to the service instances to access the services for the terminal  device 501. By way of example, the maps include network information (e.g., network topology, available bandwidth on each link, transmission delay on each link) and computing information (e.g., service instance location, the current status of each service instance) in the network. In some other example embodiments, the computing resource distribution map and the network resource distribution map are not maintained by the second apparatus 504, but are accessible by the second apparatus 504.

[0075] The second apparatus 504 receives (520) , from the first apparatus 503, a network-compute information request. Based on the candidate UPFs and the Service-ID as indicated in the network-compute information request, the second apparatus 504 retrieves (525) , from the maintained or the accessed computing resource distribution map and the network resource distribution map, the network information related to network resources between candidate UPFs and candidate service instances for a terminal device and the computing information related to the candidate service instances with the Service-ID. The second apparatus 504 may extract the related network and computing information (i.e., for the reachable UPFs, the reachable service instances) from the UPFs. The second apparatus 504 then transmits (530) , to the first apparatus 503, the network information and the computing information.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the computing information for each candidate service instance may indicate, e.g., service instance locations, the current load status of each service instance in the network. In some example embodiments, the network information may include the information that may present the network metrics for available network resources (e.g., available bandwidth) and capabilities (e.g., transmission delay) . Alternatively, or in addition, the network information may indicate, e.g., network topology, available bandwidth on each link, transmission delay on each link in the network. In some example embodiments, the network information may indicate at least one network metric for an available network resource between a candidate UPF and a service instance with the Service-ID. In an example, the network information may include a list of information-pair <UPF, service instance, location, load, …>. Alternatively, or in addition, the network information may indicate at least one transfer capability between a candidate UPF and a service instance with the Service-ID. The transfer capability may be considered as the transmission delay, available transmission bandwidth, and / or the like in a delivery path between the candidate UPF and the service instance.

[0077] The first apparatus 503 determines (540) , for the terminal device 501, at least one combination each consisting of an access node, a UPF, a service instance, and a delivery path between the UPF and the service instance through joint optimal selection amongst the candidate access nodes, the candidate UPFs, and the candidate service instances based on the RAN measurement information, the network information, and the computing information.

[0078] In some example embodiments, an optimal or best combination of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > may be selected from the joint optimal selection. The combination is considered as the best or optimal one after taking the end-to-end optimization in the RAN and the computing network, and can provide less overall resource consumption and better service performance. In some example embodiments, the at least one combination may comprise a ranked list of combinations. The combinations may be ranked according to the optimizations based on the RAN measurement information, the network information, and the computing information for the terminal device 501.

[0079] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, on the basis of the information related to the multi-factors, i.e., the RAN measurement information, the network information, and the computing information, the first apparatus 503 may perform an end-to-end optimal selection, to select an optimal combination or a ranked list of optimal combinations of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance>. In each selected combination, the access node is selected from the candidate access nodes for the terminal device 501, the UPF is selected from the candidate UPFs that are reachable from a candidate network node, and the service instance provides a service with the Service-ID for the terminal device 501.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the network segment between an access node and an UPF (i.e., N3 interface) may not be considered as unlimited network resource, and the N3 interface may be a network. In some cases, the exact delivery path between this interface may be setup too. In this case, the delivery path between access node and UPF is also taken into account in the joint optimal selection. The at least one combination each consists of an access node, a UPF, a service instance, a delivery path between the access node and the UPF, and a delivery path between the UPF and the service instance, represented as <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between access node and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance>. To select such  combination, the network information used for the joint optimal selection may further include network information related to network resources between the candidate access nodes and the candidate UPFs. A better delivery path between an access node and an UPF can be found based on such network information.

[0081] In some example embodiments, to obtain the network information related to network resources between the candidate access nodes and the candidate UPFs, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the second apparatus 504, the network-compute information request to indicate both the candidate access nodes and the candidate UPFs. Then the second apparatus 504 can retrieve the related network information from the computing resource distribution map and the network resource distribution map.

[0082] In some example embodiments related to service selection for a Service-ID, during the joint optimal selection, the joint optimal selection amongst the candidate access nodes, the candidate UPFs, and the candidate service instances may be further based on a requirement of a service with the Service-ID. The requirement of the service may involve a resource requirement, a latency requirement or the like. For example, for each combination of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between access node and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance>, the required resource should be met, e.g., including enough bandwidth for the traffic delivery, and the end-to-end delay should not exceed the latency requirement.

[0083] Access node selection is triggered along the joint optimal selection of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance >. The first apparatus 503 transmits (545) , to the first access node 502, indication information indicating at least one access node in the at least one combination. Through the optimal selection of <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > or <access node, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between access node and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance >, a better access node for the terminal device 501 can be determined, where a better access node selection means better service performance and less network resource consumption.

[0084] In a case where the first apparatus 503 is or is comprised in the AMF 410, the first apparatus 503 may directly communicate with the first access node 502 to transmit the indication information. In a case where the first apparatus 503 is or is comprised in the SMF 420, the first apparatus 503 may transmit the indication information to the AMF  410, and then the AMF 410 informs it to the first access node 502.

[0085] In some cases where a ranked list of combinations is determined, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the first access node 502, indication information indicating a ranked list of access nodes in the ranked list of combinations. That is, the ranking of the respective access nodes in the ranked combinations may be notified to the first access node 502.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the use case of service selection, in accordance with a determination that at least one access node is different from the first access node 501, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the first access node 501, a reattachment command to trigger the terminal device 501 to access a mobile network via a selected new access node. The reattachment command may comprise the indication information indicating the at least one access node in the at least one combination. In some example embodiments, if the selected access node in the at least one combination is still the current first access node 502 for the terminal device 501, then no message will be sent to request the terminal device 501 to reattach to a new access node. If the selected access node is not the current one, the terminal device 501 will be triggered to reattach to this specified access node and establish the desired PDU session for the service request.

[0087] In some example embodiments, when the mobility events occur (e.g., when general handover preparation for the terminal device 501 is triggered) , the joint optimal combination selection based on the RAN information, network information and computing information can be triggered. In this case, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the first access node 501, a target access node decision for the handover, which may comprise the indication information indicating the at least one access node in the at least one combination. In some example embodiments, if the selected access node in the at least one combination is not the current one, the handover will be triggered. Of course, if the selected access node in the at least one combination is still the current access node, then no handover will be triggered for the terminal device 501. In the use case of handover, other steps in handover preparation and handover execution process defined in 3GPP will be executed.

[0088] In some example embodiments, when the final service selection is done for the terminal device 501, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the second apparatus 504, a notification of one of at least one service instance (sometimes also referred to as “final  service selection information” ) in the at least one combination that is selected for the terminal device 501. The second apparatus 504 may receive, from the first apparatus 503, the notification and then update the computing resource distribution map and the network resource distribution map based on the notification. In an example, the final service selection information may also be notified to the corresponding UPF.

[0089] Embodiments of the network request comprising a service selection request will be described with respect to FIG. 6A, which illustrates an example process 600 of service selection in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0090] In the example of FIG. 6A, the terminal device 501 may be implemented as a UE 601, the first access node 502 may be implemented as a current xNB 602, the first apparatus 503 may be implemented as a SMF 603 and the second apparatus 504 may be implemented as a CNC 604. The example of FIG. 6A is related to service selection, and the SMF 603 is the decision maker in this example.

[0091] As illustrated, in the process 600, at 610, the SMF 603 may receive a service selection request, and a joint selection for end-to-end optimal combination may be triggered.

[0092] At 612, the SMF 603 may send to an AMF 605, a neighboring xNB measurement request to measure the reachable xNBs for the UE 601. After receiving the request, the AMF 605 may contact the related xNB and the UE 601 to do the neighboring measurement. In some example embodiments, the measurement information may contain RAN related information, e.g., signal strength, cell capacity / load.

[0093] At 614, the UE 601 may send the neighboring xNB measurement to the AMF 605. At 616, the AMF 605 may send the UE’s neighboring xNB measurement response (including reachable xNB list) to the SMF 603.

[0094] After obtaining the measurement information and reachable xNB list, at 618, the SMF 603 may obtain the reachable UPFs for these reachable xNBs.

[0095] At 620, the SMF 603 may send a network-compute information query to the CNC 604 (with the Service-ID, and reachable UPF list) . At 622, the CNC 604 may return a network-compute information response with a list of information-pair <<UPF, service instance, location, load, …>, network metrics between UPF and service instance>) .

[0096] At 624, based on the obtained information, the joint optimal selection <xNB,  UPF, service instance, and the delivery path between UPF and service instance> or <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between xNB and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > is done by the SMF 603, and xNB selection is triggered along the joint selection.

[0097] At 626, a xNB selection response with the selected xNB in the joint optimal selection may be sent to the AMF 605.

[0098] In a case where the selected xNB is still the current xNB, no message will be sent to request UE to reattach to a new xNB. In a case where the selected xNB is not the current one, at 628, the AMF 605 may send a reattachment command (the selected xNB) to the current xNB 602, to the UE to access a mobile network via a selected new access node.

[0099] In this example, a neighbor xNB 606 is selected, UPF 2 607 is selected and service instance 2 608 is selected. At 630, the SMF 603 may notify the final service selection information (e.g., the selected service instance) to the CNC 604. At 632, the SMF 603 may notify the final service selection information (e.g., the selected service instance) to the corresponding UPF (i.e., UPF 2 607) . At 634, the UE 601 will be triggered to reattach to this specified xNB (i.e., the neighbor xNB 606) and establish the desired PDU session for the service request.

[0100] At 636, the selected service instance (i.e., the service instance 2 608) may be notified. Then, at 638, the UE 601 may communicate with the service instance 2 608 to transfer service data.

[0101] Embodiments of the network request comprising a service selection request will be described with respect to FIG. 6B, which illustrates another example process 650 of service selection in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0102] In the example of FIG. 6B, the terminal device 501 may be implemented as a UE 651, the first access node 502 may be implemented as a current xNB 652, the first apparatus 503 may be implemented as an AMF 655 and the second apparatus 504 may be implemented as a CNC 654. The example of FIG. 6A is related to service selection, and the AMF 655 is the decision maker in this example.

[0103] As illustrated, in the process 650, at 660, a SMF 653 may receive a service selection request. At 662, the SMF 653 may trigger the AMF 655 to perform a joint  selection for end-to-end optimal combination. In an example, the AMF 655 may contact the related xNB and the UE 651 to do the neighboring measurement. In some example embodiments, the measurement information may contain RAN related information, e.g., signal strength, cell capacity / load.

[0104] At 664, the UE 651 may send the neighboring xNB measurement to the AMF 655. At 666, the AMF 655 may send network-computing information to the SMF 653.

[0105] After obtaining the measurement information and reachable xNB list, at 668, the SMF 653 may obtain the reachable UPFs for these reachable xNBs.

[0106] At 670, the SMF 653 may send a network-computing information query to the CNC 654 (with the Service-ID, and reachable UPF list) . At 672, the CNC 654 may return a network-computing information response with a list of information-pair <<UPF, service instance, location, load, …>, network metrics between UPF and service instance>) .

[0107] At 674, the SMF 653 may forward the network-computing information response to the AMF 655.

[0108] At 676, based on the obtained information, the joint optimal selection <xNB, UPF, service instance, and the delivery path between UPF and service instance> or <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between xNB and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > is done by the AMF 605, and xNB selection is triggered along the joint selection.

[0109] At 678, the AMF 605 may notify the selected service instance to the SMF 653.

[0110] In a case where the selected xNB is still the current xNB, no message will be sent to request UE to reattach to a new xNB. In a case where the selected xNB is not the current one, at 680, the AMF 655 may send a reattachment command (the selected xNB) to the current xNB 652, to trigger the UE to access a mobile network via a selected new access node.

[0111] In this example, a neighbor xNB 656 is selected, UPF 2 657 is selected and service instance 2 658 is selected. At 682, the AMF 655 may notify the final service selection information (e.g., the selected service instance) to the CNC 654. At 684, the AMF 655 may notify the final service selection information (e.g., the selected service instance) to the corresponding UPF (i.e., UPF 2 657) . At 686, the UE 651 will be triggered to reattach to this specified xNB (i.e., the neighbor xNB 656) and establish the desired PDU  session for the service request.

[0112] At 688, the selected service instance (i.e., the service instance 2 658) may be notified. Then, at 690, the UE 651 may communicate with the service instance 2 658 to transfer service data.

[0113] In this way, better xNB selection may be guaranteed which means better service performance and less network resource consumption. The end-to-end optimal combination <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > or <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between xNB and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > means the optimal selection from the end-to-end global view.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the network request may comprise an access node selection request from the first access node during a handover procedure for the terminal device 501. The first apparatus 503 may transmit, to the first access node 502, indication information indicating the at least one access node in the at least one combination as at least one target access node for the handover procedure.

[0115] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a second access node amongst the at least one access node in the at least one combination is selected for handover by the terminal device, the first apparatus 503 may transmit, to a target UPF in a same combination as the second access node, a notification of connecting to a service instance in the same combination.

[0116] Embodiments of the network request comprising an access node selection request will be described with respect to FIG. 7A, which illustrates an example process 700 of access node selection in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0117] In the example of FIG. 7A, the terminal device 501 may be implemented as a UE 701, the first access node 502 may be implemented as a current xNB 702, the first apparatus 503 may be implemented as a SMF 703 and the second apparatus 504 may be implemented as a CNC 704. The example of FIG. 7A is related to handover, and the SMF 703 may be the decision maker in this example.

[0118] As illustrated, in normal operation of the process 700, user data may be exchanged between UE 701, the current xNB 702, UPF 1, and Service Instance 1 706. At  710, mobility control information may be provided by an AMF 705.

[0119] When the normal handover preparation is triggered, at 712, the UE’s neighboring xNB measurement information may be sent to the AMF 705, and at 714, the reachable xNB information for the UE may be sent to the SMF 703 by the AMF 705. In an example, the measurement information may contain RAN related information, e.g., signal strength, cell capacity / load. It is to be understood that the reachable xNB means the quality of air-interface to that xNB is good enough for communication.

[0120] Once the SMF 703 gets the reachable xNBs, at 716, the SMF 703 may obtain the UPFs that are reachable from these reachable xNBs. Then, at 718, the SMF 703 may send a network-compute information query message to the CNC 704 (with the Service-ID, and reachable UPF list) . At 720, the CNC 704 may return network-computing information response with a list of info-pair <<UPF, service instance, location, load, …>, network metrics between UPF and service instance>>.

[0121] At 722, based on the obtained information, the joint optimal selection <xNB, UPF, service instance, and the delivery path between UPF and service instance> or <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between xNB and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > is done by the SMF 703, a ranked and limited list of best combination may be selected (xNB selection is triggered along the joint selection) .

[0122] At 724, the xNB selection response with a ranked and limited list of best selected xNB will be sent to the AMF 705.

[0123] In a case where the selected xNB is still the current xNB, no handover will be triggered. In a case where the selected xNB is not the current one, the handover will be triggered. At 726, the AMF 705 may send a target xNB decision (e.g., a ranked and limited list of best selected xNB) to the current xNB 702.

[0124] At 728, the UE 701 may be handover to the selected xNB during the handover decision. At 730, the SMF 703 may notify the CNC 704 the selected service instance. At 732, the SMF 703 may notify a service instance 1 706 with the selected service instance as the target. At 734, the UE 701 may send a handover request to a neighbor xNB 707 (also referred to as the selected xNB) .

[0125] At 736, other steps in handover preparation and handover execution process defined in 3GPP may be executed. At 738, the service migration may be completed from  the service instance 1 706 to the service instance 2 708 (also referred to as the selected service instance) . At 740, the UE 701 may communicate with the service instance 2 708 to transmit service data.

[0126] Embodiments of the network request comprising an access node selection request will be described with respect to FIG. 7B, which illustrates another example process 750 of access node selection in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0128] As illustrated, in the process 750, at 760, mobility control information may be provided by the AMF 755.

[0129] When the normal handover preparation is triggered, at 762, the UE’s neighboring xNB measurement information may be sent to the AMF 755 and at 764, the reachable xNB information for the UE may be sent to the SMF 753 by the AMF 755. In an example, the measurement information may contain RAN related information, e.g., signal strength, cell capacity / load. It is to be understood that the reachable xNB means the quality of air-interface to that xNB is good enough for communication.

[0130] Once the SMF 753 gets the reachable xNBs, at 766, the SMF 703 may obtain the UPFs that are reachable from these reachable xNBs. Then, at 768, the SMF 753 may send a network-computing information query message to the CNC 754 (with the Service-ID, and reachable UPF list) . At 770, the CNC 754 may return network-computing information response with a list of info-pair <<UPF, service instance, location, load, …>, network metrics between UPF and service instance>> to the SMF 753. At 772, the SMF 753 may forward the network-computing information response to the AMF 755.

[0131] At 774, based on the obtained information, the joint optimal selection <xNB, UPF, service instance, and the delivery path between UPF and service instance> or <xNB, UPF, service instance, the delivery path between xNB and UPF, the delivery path between UPF and service instance > is done by the AMF 755, a ranked and limited list of best  combination may be selected (xNB selection is triggered along the joint selection) .

[0132] At 776, the AMF 755 may notify the SMF 753 with the selected service instance.

[0133] In a case where the selected xNB is still the current xNB, no handover will be triggered.

[0134] In a case where the selected xNB is not the current one, the handover will be triggered. At 778, the AMF 755 may send a target xNB decision (e.g., a ranked and limited list of best selected xNB) to the current xNB 752.
