AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication systems face challenges in efficiently supporting CSI reporting configurations that associate CSI-RS resources with CSI-RS antenna ports, leading to inefficient energy consumption and signaling.

Method used

Implementing a CSI reporting configuration that indicates a CSI-RS port subset, where the number of antenna ports is less than all associated ports, using a bitmap or codebook to determine precoding matrix indicators, allowing for reduced energy consumption and finer granularity in beamforming, while being compatible with existing codebooks and supporting more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces energy consumption, overhead, and increases throughput and spectral efficiency by using a CSI-RS port subset, while maintaining compatibility with existing systems.

Description

CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION (CSI) REPORTING CONFIGURATION INDICATING A CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION REFERENCE SIGNAL (CSI-RS) ACCORDING TO A PORT SUBSET AND A RESOURCE SETTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication systems, and more particularly, to supporting a channel state information (CSI) reporting configuration indicating a channel state information reference signal (CSR-RS) according to a port subset and a resource set.

[0002] DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED TECHNOLOGYWireless communications systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and so on. A wireless multiple-access communications system may include a number of network nodes, base stations or network access nodes, each simultaneously supporting communication for multiple communication devices, which may be otherwise known as user equipment (UE) . These systems may be capable of supporting communication with multiple UEs by sharing the available system resources (such as time, frequency, and power) . Examples of such multiple-access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth generation (5G) systems which may be referred to as New Radio (NR) systems. These systems may employ technologies such as code division multiple access (CDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) , or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM) .

[0003] A network node transmits, and a UE receives, a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) to estimate / measure a channel and report channel quality information (channel state information (CSI) ) back to the network node. In general, the CSI-RS can be transmitted using a various number of CSI-RS antenna ports.

[0004] As the demand for mobile broadband access continues to increase, research and development continue to advance wireless communication technologies not only to meet the growing demand for mobile broadband access, but to advance and enhance the user experience with mobile communications. Although wireless communications systems have made significant technological advancements over time, challenges still exist.  Current wireless communication systems cannot efficiently support a CSI reporting configuration to associate CSI-RS resources with CSI-RS antenna ports in a manner that reduces energy and signaling.SUMMARY

[0005] The following summarizes some aspects of the present disclosure to provide a basic understanding of the discussed technology. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated features of the disclosure, and is intended neither to identify key or critical elements of all aspects of the disclosure nor to delineate the scope of any or all aspects of the disclosure. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects of the disclosure in summary form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0006] Examples of methods, apparatuses, and non-transitory computer-readable medium described herein may include operations, features, means, or instructions for receiving, at a user equipment (UE) , a channel state information (CSI) reporting configuration and transmitting, at the UE, a CSI report. The CSI reporting configuration indicates a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) port subset that includes antenna ports. The antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset are associated with a CSI-RS resource set that includes CSI-RS resources. The number of antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset is less than all antenna ports associated with the CSI-RS resource set. The UE transmits a CSI report associated with the CSI-RS resources of the CSI-RS resource set and the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset. Examples of methods, apparatuses, and non-transitory computer-readable medium described herein may further include operations, features, means, or instructions for transmitting, at a network node, a CSI reporting configuration and receiving, at the network node, a CSI report. The CSI reporting configuration indicates a CSI-RS port subset that includes antenna ports. The antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset are associated with a CSI-RS resource set that includes CSI-RS resources. The number of antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset is less than all antenna ports associated with the CSI-RS resource set. The network node receives a CSI report associated with the CSI-RS resources of the CSI-RS resource set and the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset.

[0007] According to certain aspects, the port subset associated with the CSI reporting configuration may be indicated as a bitmap (such as a single bitmap or a two-level bitmap) .  Further, the CSI report may include a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) associated with a codebook. The UE may determine the PMI in association with the codebook. For example, the UE may use a different codebook to determine the PMI depending on the number of antennas in the CSI-RS port subset (such as whether the port subset includes more than a predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports) and the number of antenna panels (such as a single panel or multiple panels) . Particular implementations realize one or more of the following potential advantages. In some aspects, using only a subset of all CSI-RS antenna ports with a resource set may reduce energy consumption and control the CSI-RS with finer granularity in, such as beamforming. Further, mapping a resource set to a port subset reduces overhead required to configure or calculate the CSI reporting configuration and increases throughput and spectral efficiency compared to a single CSI-RS resource mapped to multiple CSI-RS antenna ports. Also, the codebook utilized according to the inventive concept can be compatible with existing codebooks, and further support a number of CSI-RS antenna ports that exceed existing CSI-RS antenna port limits (such as 32 CSI-RS antenna ports) .

[0024] Various aspects of the disclosure are described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings. This disclosure may, however, be embodied in many different forms and are not to be construed as limited to any specific structure or function presented throughout this disclosure. Rather, these aspects are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the disclosure to those skilled in the art. Based on the teachings herein one skilled in the art may appreciate that the scope of the disclosure is intended to cover any aspect of the disclosure disclosed herein, whether implemented independently of or combined with any other aspect of the disclosure. For example, an apparatus may be implemented or a method may be practiced using any quantity of the aspects set forth herein. In addition, the scope of the disclosure is intended to cover such an apparatus or method which is practiced using other structure, functionality, or structure and functionality in addition to or other than the various aspects of the disclosure set forth herein. Any aspect of the disclosure disclosed herein may be embodied by one or more elements of a claim.

[0025] The electromagnetic spectrum is often subdivided, based on frequency (or wavelength) , into various classes, bands or channels. In fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , two initial operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) . The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are often referred to as mid-band frequencies. Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “sub-6 GHz” band in various documents and articles. A similar nomenclature issue sometimes occurs with regard to FR2, which is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “millimeter wave” band (or spectrum) in documents and articles, despite being different than the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz –300 GHz) which is identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a “millimeter wave” band. With the above aspects in mind, unless specifically stated otherwise, it should be understood that the term “sub-6 GHz” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may be less than 6 GHz, may be within FR1, or may include mid-band frequencies. Further, unless specifically stated otherwise, it should be understood that the term “millimeter wave” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may include mid-band frequencies, may be within FR2, or may be within the EHF band.

[0026] Examples of methods, apparatuses, and non-transitory computer-readable medium described herein may include operations, features, means, or instructions for receiving, at a user equipment (UE) , a channel state information (CSI) reporting configuration and transmitting, at the UE, a CSI report. The CSI reporting configuration indicates a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) port subset that includes antenna ports. The antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset are associated with a resource set that includes CSI-RS resources. The number of antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset is less than all antenna ports associated with the CSI-RS resource set. The UE transmits a CSI report associated with the CSI-RS resources of the CSI-RS resource set and the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset.

[0027] Examples of methods, apparatuses, and non-transitory computer-readable medium described herein may further include operations, features, means, or instructions for transmitting, at a network node, a CSI reporting configuration and receiving, at the network node, a CSI report.

[0028] According to certain aspects, the port subset associated with the CSI reporting configuration may be indicated as a bitmap (such as a single bitmap or a two-level bitmap) . Further, the CSI report may include a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) in association with a codebook. The UE may determine the PMI in association with the a codebook. For example, the UE may use a different codebook to determine the PMI depending on the number of antennas in  the CSI-RS port subset (such as whether the CSI-RS port subset includes more than a predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports) and the number of antenna panel (such as a single panel or multiple panels) .

[0029] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. Using a CSI-RS port subset rather than all CSI-RS antenna ports with a resource set advantageously reduces energy consumption and allows for control of the CSI-RS with finer granularity. Further, mapping of a resource set to the port subset may reduce overhead required to calculate the CSI reporting configuration and increase throughput and spectral efficiency compared  to a single CSI-RS resource mapped to multiple CSI-RS antenna ports. At the same time, the codebook may not only be compatible with the existing codebooks but also support CSI-RS antenna ports, which are more than the existing CSI-RS antenna port limit (such as 32 CSI-RS antenna ports) .

[0030] In various implementations, the techniques and apparatus may be used for wireless communication networks such as code division multiple access (CDMA) networks, time division multiple access (TDMA) networks, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) networks, orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA) networks, single-carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) networks, LTE networks, GSM networks, 5G or NR networks (sometimes referred to as “5G NR” networks, systems, or devices) , as well as other communications networks. As described herein, the terms “networks” and “systems” may be used interchangeably. In some implementations, two or more wireless communications systems, also referred to as wireless communications networks, may be configured to provide or participate in authorized shared access between the two or more wireless communications systems.

[0031] A CDMA network may implement a radio technology such as universal terrestrial radio access (UTRA) , cdma2000, and the like. UTRA includes wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) and low chip rate (LCR) . CDMA2000 covers IS-2000, IS-95, and IS-856 standards.

[0032] A TDMA network may implement a radio technology such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) . 3GPP defines standards for the GSM EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution) radio access network (RAN) , also denoted as GERAN. GERAN is the radio component of GSM or GSM EDGE, together with the network that joins the network nodes (for example, the Ater and Abis interfaces, among other examples) and the network node controllers (for example, A interfaces, among other examples) . The radio access network represents a component of a GSM network, through which phone calls and packet data are routed from and to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and Internet to and from subscriber handsets, also known as user terminals or UEs. A mobile phone operator's network may include one or more GERANs, which may be coupled with UTRANs in the case of a UMTS or GSM network. Additionally, an operator network may include one or more LTE networks, or one or more other networks. The various different network types may use different radio access technologies (RATs) and radio access networks (RANs) .

[0033] An OFDMA network may implement a radio technology such as evolved UTRA (E-UTRA) , IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, flash-OFDM and the like. UTRA, E- UTRA, and GSM are part of universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) . In particular, long term evolution (LTE) is a release of UMTS that uses E-UTRA. UTRA, E-UTRA, GSM, UMTS and LTE are described in documents provided from an organization named the “3rd Generation Partnership Project” (3GPP) , and cdma2000 is described in documents from an organization named “3rd Generation Partnership Project 2” (3GPP2) . These various radio technologies and standards are known or are being developed. For example, the 3GPP is a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations that aims to define a globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone specification. 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) is a 3GPP project aimed at improving the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) mobile phone standard. The 3GPP may define specifications for the next generation of mobile networks, mobile systems, and mobile devices. The present disclosure may describe certain aspects with reference to LTE, 4G, 5G, or NR technologies; however, the description is not intended to be limited to a specific technology or application, and one or more aspects described with reference to one technology may be understood to be applicable to another technology. Indeed, one or more aspects the present disclosure are related to shared access to wireless spectrum between networks using different radio access technologies or radio air interfaces.

[0034] 5G networks contemplate diverse deployments, diverse spectrum, and diverse services and devices that may be implemented using an OFDM-based unified, air interface. To achieve these goals, further enhancements to LTE and LTE-A are considered in addition to development of the new radio technology for 5G NR networks. The 5G NR will be capable of scaling to provide coverage (1) to a massive Internet of things (IoTs) with an ultra-high density (such as ~1M nodes per km2) , ultra-low complexity (such as ~10s of bits per sec) , ultra-low energy (such as ~10+ years of battery life) , and deep coverage with the capability to reach challenging locations; (2) including mission-critical control with strong security to safeguard sensitive personal, financial, or classified information, ultra-high reliability (such as ~99.9999%reliability) , ultra-low latency (such as ~ 1 millisecond (ms) ) , and users with wide ranges of mobility or lack thereof; and (3) with enhanced mobile broadband including extreme high capacity (such as ~ 10 Tbps per km2) , extreme data rates (such as multi-Gbps rate, 100+ Mbps user experienced rates) , and deep awareness with advanced discovery and optimizations.

[0035] 5G NR devices, networks, and systems may be implemented to use optimized OFDM-based waveform features. These features may include scalable numerology and transmission time intervals (TTIs) ; a common, flexible framework to efficiently multiplex services and features with a dynamic, low-latency time division duplex (TDD) or frequency division duplex (FDD) design; and advanced wireless technologies, such as massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) , robust millimeter wave (mmWave) transmissions, advanced channel coding, and device-centric mobility. Scalability of the numerology in 5G NR, with scaling of subcarrier spacing, may efficiently address operating diverse services across diverse spectrum and diverse deployments. For example, in various outdoor and macro coverage deployments of less than 3GHz FDD or TDD implementations, subcarrier spacing may occur with 15 kHz, for example over 1, 5, 10, 20 MHz, and the like bandwidth. For other various outdoor and small cell coverage deployments of TDD greater than 3 GHz, subcarrier spacing may occur with 30 kHz over 80 or 100 MHz bandwidth. For other various indoor wideband implementations, using a TDD over the unlicensed portion of the 5 GHz band, the subcarrier spacing may occur with 60 kHz over a 160 MHz bandwidth. Finally, for various deployments transmitting with mmWave components at a TDD of 28 GHz, subcarrier spacing may occur with 120 kHz over a 500MHz bandwidth.

[0036] The scalable numerology of 5G NR facilitates scalable TTI for diverse latency and quality of service (QoS) requirements. For example, shorter TTI may be used for low latency and high reliability, while longer TTI may be used for higher spectral efficiency. The efficient multiplexing of long and short TTIs to allow transmissions to start on symbol boundaries. 5G NR also contemplates a self-contained integrated subframe design with uplink or downlink scheduling information, data, and acknowledgement in the same subframe. The self-contained integrated subframe supports communications in unlicensed or contention-based shared spectrum, adaptive uplink or downlink that may be flexibly configured on a per-cell basis to dynamically switch between uplink and downlink to meet the current traffic needs.

[0037] For clarity, certain aspects of the apparatus and techniques may be described below with reference to example 5G NR implementations or in a 5G-centric way, and 5G terminology may be used as illustrative examples in portions of the description below; however, the description is not intended to be limited to 5G applications.

[0038] Moreover, it should be understood that, in operation, wireless communication networks adapted according to the concepts herein may operate with any combination of licensed or unlicensed spectrum depending on loading and availability. Accordingly, it will be apparent to a person having ordinary skill in the art that the systems, apparatus and methods described herein may be applied to other communications systems and applications than the particular examples provided.

[0039] Figure 1 is a block diagram illustrating details of an example wireless communication system. The wireless communication system may include wireless network 100. The wireless network 100 may, for example, include a 5G wireless network. As appreciated by those skilled in the art, components appearing in Figure 1 are likely to have related counterparts in other network arrangements including, for example, cellular-style network arrangements and non-cellular-style-network arrangements, such as device-to-device, peer-to-peer or ad hoc network arrangements, among other examples.

[0040] The wireless network 100 illustrated in Figure 1 includes a number of network nodes 105 and other network entities. A network node may be a station that communicates with the UEs and may be referred to as an evolved node B (eNB) , a next generation eNB (gNB) , an access point, and the like. Each network node 105 may provide communication coverage for a particular geographic area. In 3GPP, the term “cell” can refer to this particular geographic coverage area of a network node or a network node subsystem serving the coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used. In implementations of the wireless network 100 herein, the network nodes 105 may be associated with a same operator or different operators, such as the wireless network 100 may include a plurality of operator wireless networks. Additionally, in implementations of the wireless network 100 herein, the network nodes 105 may provide wireless communications using one or more of the same frequencies, such as one or more frequency bands in licensed spectrum, unlicensed spectrum, or a combination thereof, as a neighboring cell. In some examples, an individual network node 105 or UE 115 may be operated by more than one network operating entity. In some other examples, each network node 105 and UE 115 may be operated by a single network operating entity.

[0041] A network node may provide communication coverage for a macro cell or a small cell, such as a pico cell or a femto cell, or other types of cell. A macro cell generally covers a relatively large geographic area, such as several kilometers in radius, and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions with the network provider. A small  cell, such as a pico cell, would generally cover a relatively smaller geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions with the network provider. A small cell, such as a femto cell, would also generally cover a relatively small geographic area, such as a home, and, in addition to unrestricted access, may provide restricted access by UEs having an association with the femto cell, such as UEs in a closed subscriber group (CSG) , UEs for users in the home, and the like. A network node for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro network node. A network node for a small cell may be referred to as a small cell network node, a pico network node, a femto network node, a home network node, a small cell base station, a pico base station, a femto base station or a home base station. In the example shown in Figure 1, network nodes 105d and 105e are regular macro network node or base stations, while network nodes 105a–105c are macro network nodes or base stations enabled with one of 3 dimension (3D) , full dimension (FD) , or massive MIMO. Network nodes 105a–105c take advantage of their higher dimension MIMO capabilities to exploit 3D beamforming in both elevation and azimuth beamforming to increase coverage and capacity. Network node 105f is a small cell network node or base station which may be a home node or portable access point. A network node may support one or multiple cells, such as two cells, three cells, four cells, and the like.

[0042] The wireless network 100 may support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, the network nodes may have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different network nodes may be approximately aligned in time. For asynchronous operation, the network nodes may have different frame timing, and transmissions from different network nodes may not be aligned in time. In some scenarios, networks may be enabled or configured to handle dynamic switching between synchronous or asynchronous operations.

[0043] The UEs 115 are dispersed throughout the wireless network 100, and each UE may be stationary or mobile. It should be appreciated that, although a mobile apparatus is commonly referred to as UE in standards and specifications promulgated by the 3GPP, such apparatus may additionally or otherwise be referred to by those skilled in the art as a mobile station (MS) , a subscriber station, a mobile unit, a subscriber unit, a wireless unit, a remote unit, a mobile device, a wireless device, a wireless communications device, a remote device, a mobile subscriber station, an access terminal (AT) , a mobile terminal, a wireless terminal, a remote terminal, a handset, a terminal, a user agent, a mobile client,  a client, or some other suitable terminology. Within the present document, a “mobile” apparatus or UE need not necessarily have a capability to move, and may be stationary. Some non-limiting examples of a mobile apparatus, such as may include implementations of one or more of the UEs 115, include a mobile, a cellular (cell) phone, a smart phone, a session initiation protocol (SIP) phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a laptop, a personal computer (PC) , a notebook, a netbook, a smart book, a tablet, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) . A mobile apparatus may additionally be an “Internet of things” (IoT) or “Internet of everything” (IoE) device such as an automotive or other transportation vehicle, a satellite radio, a global positioning system (GPS) device, a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) device, a logistics controller, a drone, a multi-copter, a quad-copter, a smart energy or security device, a solar panel or solar array, municipal lighting, water, or other infrastructure; industrial automation and enterprise devices; consumer and wearable devices, such as eyewear, a wearable camera, a smart watch, a health or fitness tracker, a mammal implantable device, a gesture tracking device, a medical device, a digital audio player (such as MP3 player) , a camera or a game console, among other examples; and digital home or smart home devices such as a home audio, video, and multimedia device, an appliance, a sensor, a vending machine, intelligent lighting, a home security system, or a smart meter, among other examples. In one aspect, a UE may be a device that includes a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) . In another aspect, a UE may be a device that does not include a UICC. In some aspects, UEs that do not include UICCs may be referred to as IoE devices. The UEs 115a–115d of the implementation illustrated in Figure 1 are examples of mobile smart phone-type devices accessing the wireless network 100. A UE may be a machine specifically configured for connected communication, including machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced MTC (eMTC) , narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and the like. The UEs 115e–115k illustrated in Figure 1 are examples of various machines configured for communication that access 5G network 100.

[0044] A mobile apparatus, such as the UEs 115, may be able to communicate with any type of the network nodes, whether macro base stations, pico base stations, femto base stations, relays, and the like. In Figure 1, a communication link (represented as a lightning bolt) indicates wireless transmissions between a UE and a serving network node, which is a network node designated to serve the UE on the downlink or uplink, or desired transmission between network nodes, and backhaul transmissions between network nodes.  Backhaul communication between network nodes of the wireless network 100 may occur using wired or wireless communication links.

[0045] In operation at the 5G network 100, the network nodes 105a–105c serve the UEs 115a and 115b using 3D beamforming and coordinated spatial techniques, such as coordinated multipoint (CoMP) or multi-connectivity. Macro network node 105d performs backhaul communications with the network nodes 105a–105c, as well as small cell, the network node 105f. Macro network node 105d also transmits multicast services which are subscribed to and received by the UEs 115c and 115d. Such multicast services may include mobile television or stream video, or may include other services for providing community information, such as weather emergencies or alerts, such as Amber alerts or gray alerts.

[0046] The wireless network 100 of implementations supports mission critical communications with ultra-reliable and redundant links for mission critical devices, such the UE 115e, which is a drone. Redundant communication links with the UE 115e include from the macro network nodes 105d and 105e, as well as small cell network node 105f. Other machine type devices, such as UE 115f (thermometer) , the UE 115g (smart meter) , and the UE 115h (wearable device) may communicate through the wireless network 100 either directly with network nodes, such as the small cell network node 105f, and the macro network node 105e, or in multi-hop configurations by communicating with another user device which relays its information to the network, such as the UE 115f communicating temperature measurement information to the smart meter, the UE 115g, which is then reported to the network through the small cell network node 105f. The 5G network 100 may provide additional network efficiency through dynamic, low-latency TDD or FDD communications, such as in a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) mesh network between the UEs 115i–115k communicating with the macro network node 105e.

[0047] Figure 2 is a block diagram conceptually illustrating an example design of a network node 105 and a UE 115. The network node 105 and the UE 115 may be one of the network nodes and one of the UEs in Figure 1. For a restricted association scenario (as mentioned above) , the network node 105 may be the small cell network node 105f in Figure 1, and the UE 115 may be the UE 115c or 115d operating in a service area of the network node 105f, which in order to access the small cell network node 105f, would be included in a list of accessible UEs for the small cell network node 105f. Additionally, the network node 105 may be a network node of some other type. As shown in Figure 2, the network  node 105 may be equipped with antennas 234a through 234t, and the UE 115 may be equipped with antennas 252a through 252r for facilitating wireless communications.

[0048] At the network node 105, a transmit processor 220 may receive data from a data source 212 and control information from a controller 240. The control information may be for the physical broadcast channel (PBCH) , physical control format indicator channel (PCFICH) , physical hybrid-ARQ (automatic repeat request) indicator channel (PHICH) , physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , enhanced physical downlink control channel (EPDCCH) , or MTC physical downlink control channel (MPDCCH) , among other examples. The data may be for the PDSCH, among other examples. The transmit processor 220 may process, such as encode and symbol map, the data and control information to obtain data symbols and control symbols, respectively. Additionally, the transmit processor 220 may generate reference symbols, such as for the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) , and cell-specific reference signal. Transmit (TX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processor 230 may perform spatial processing on the data symbols, the control symbols, or the reference symbols, if applicable, and may provide output symbol streams to modulators (MODs) 232a through 232t. For example, spatial processing performed on the data symbols, the control symbols, or the reference symbols may include precoding. Each modulator 232 may process a respective output symbol stream, such as for OFDM, among other examples, to obtain an output sample stream. Each modulator 232 may additionally or alternatively process the output sample stream to obtain a downlink signal. For example, to process the output sample stream, each modulator 232 may convert to analog, amplify, filter, and upconvert the output sample stream to obtain the downlink signal. Downlink signals from modulators 232a through 232t may be transmitted via the antennas 234a through 234t, respectively.

[0049] At the UE 115, the antennas 252a through 252r may receive the downlink signals from the network node 105 and may provide received signals to the demodulators (DEMODs) 254a through 254r, respectively. Each demodulator 254 may condition a respective received signal to obtain input samples. For example, to condition the respective received signal, each demodulator 254 may filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize the respective received signal to obtain the input samples. Each demodulator 254 may further process the input samples, such as for OFDM, among other examples, to obtain received symbols. MIMO detector 256 may obtain received symbols from demodulators 254a  through 254r, perform MIMO detection on the received symbols if applicable, and provide detected symbols. Receive processor 258 may process the detected symbols, provide decoded data for the UE 115 to a data sink 260, and provide decoded control information to a controller 280. For example, to process the detected symbols, the receive processor 258 may demodulate, deinterleave, and decode the detected symbols.

[0050] On the uplink, at the UE 115, a transmit processor 264 may receive and process data (such as for the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) ) from a data source 262 and control information (such as for the physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) ) from the controller 280. Additionally, the transmit processor 264 may generate reference symbols for a reference signal. The symbols from the transmit processor 264 may be precoded by TX MIMO processor 266 if applicable, further processed by the modulators 254a through 254r (such as for SC-FDM, among other examples) , and transmitted to the network node 105. At network node 105, the uplink signals from the UE 115 may be received by antennas 234, processed by demodulators 232, detected by MIMO detector 236 if applicable, and further processed by receive processor 238 to obtain decoded data and control information sent by the UE 115. The receive processor 238 may provide the decoded data to data sink 239 and the decoded control information to the controller 240.

[0051] The controllers 240 and 280 may direct the operation at the network node 105 and the UE 115, respectively. The controller 240 or other processors and modules at the network node 105 or the controller 280 or other processors and modules at the UE 115 may perform or direct the execution of various processes for the techniques described herein, such as to perform or direct the execution illustrated in Figures 5, 7, 10, and 11, or other processes for the techniques described herein. The memories 242 and 282 may store data and program codes for the network node 105 and The UE 115, respectively. Scheduler 244 may schedule UEs for data transmission on the downlink or uplink.

[0052] In some cases, the UE 115 and the network node 105 may operate in a shared radio frequency spectrum band, which may include licensed or unlicensed, such as contention-based, frequency spectrum. In an unlicensed frequency portion of the shared radio frequency spectrum band, the UEs 115 or the network nodes 105 may traditionally perform a medium-sensing procedure to contend for access to the frequency spectrum. For example, the UE 115 or network node 105 may perform a listen-before-talk or listen-before-transmitting (LBT) procedure such as a clear channel assessment (CCA) prior to communicating in order to determine whether the shared channel is available. A CCA  may include an energy detection procedure to determine whether there are any other active transmissions. For example, a device may infer that a change in a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of a power meter indicates that a channel is occupied. Specifically, signal power that is concentrated in a certain bandwidth and exceeds a predetermined noise floor may indicate another wireless transmitter. In some implementations, a CCA may include detection of specific sequences that indicate use of the channel. For example, another device may transmit a specific preamble prior to transmitting a data sequence. In some cases, an LBT procedure may include a wireless node adjusting its own back off window based on the amount of energy detected on a channel or the acknowledge or negative-acknowledge (ACK or NACK) feedback for its own transmitted packets as a proxy for collisions.

[0053] Figure 3 is a block diagram of an example wireless communications system that supports a CSI reporting configuration indicating a CSI-RS port subset associated with a CSI-RS resource set. In some examples, the wireless communications system 300 may implement aspects of the wireless network 100. The wireless communications system 300 includes the UE 115 and the network node 105. Although one UE 115 and one network node 105 are illustrated, in some other implementations, the wireless communications system 300 may generally include multiple UEs 115, and may include more than one network node 105.

[0057] The antenna array 320 may include multiple antenna elements configured to perform wireless communications with other devices, such as with the network node 105. In some implementations, the antenna array 320 may be configured to perform wireless communications using different beams, also referred to as antenna beams. The beams may include TX beams and RX beams. To illustrate, the antenna array 320 may include multiple independent sets (or subsets) of antenna elements (or multiple individual antenna arrays) , and each set of antenna elements of the antenna array 320 may be configured to communicate using a different respective beam that may have a different respective direction than the other beams. For example, a first set of antenna elements of the antenna array 320 may be configured to communicate via a first beam having a first direction, and a second set of antenna elements of the antenna array 320 may be configured to communicate via a second beam having a second direction. In other implementations, the antenna array 320 may be configured to communicate via more than two beams. Alternatively, one or more sets of antenna elements of the antenna array 320 may be configured to concurrently generate multiple beams, for example using multiple RF chains of the UE 115. Each individual set (or subset) of antenna elements may include multiple antenna elements, such as two antenna elements, four antenna elements, ten antenna elements, twenty antenna elements, or any other number of antenna elements greater than two. Although described as an antenna array, in other implementations, the antenna array 320 may include or correspond to multiple antenna panels, and each antenna panel may be configured to communicate using a different respective beam.

[0058] The network node 105 can include a variety of components (such as structural, hardware components) used for carrying out one or more functions described herein. For example, these components can include one or more processors 352 (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the processor 352” ) , one or more memory devices 354 (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the memory 354” ) , one or more transmitters 362 (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the transmitter 362” ) , one or more receivers 364 (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the receiver 364” ) , and one or more antenna arrays (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the antenna array 366” ) . The processor 352 may be configured to execute instructions stored in the memory 354 to perform the operations described herein. In some implementations, the processor 352 includes or corresponds to one or more of the receive processor 238, the transmit processor 220, and the controller 240, and the memory 354 includes or corresponds to the memory 242.

[0059] The memory 354 includes or is configured to store a CSI reporting configuration 356, which includes a CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 and a CSI-RS resource set configuration 360. The CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 may indicate a port subset that is one or more antenna ports and is less than all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356. The CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 may specify antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset to CSI-RS resources of the resource set.

[0060] The transmitter 362 is configured to transmit reference signals , synchronization signals, control information and data to one or more other devices, and the receiver 364 is configured to receive reference signals, control information and data from one or more other devices. For example, the transmitter 362 may transmit reference signals (such as a CSI-RS 372) , synchronization signals, control information, data, the CSI reporting configuration 356 including the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358, and the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 to, and the receiver 364 may receive signaling, control information and data (such as the CSI report 308) from, the UE 115. In some implementations, the transmitter 362 and the receiver 364 may be integrated in one or more transceivers. Additionally or alternatively, the transmitter 362 or the receiver 364 may include or correspond to one or more components of network node 105 described with reference to Figure 2.

[0061] The antenna array 366 may include multiple antenna elements configured to perform wireless communications with other devices, such as with the UE 115. In some implementations, the antenna array 366 may be configured to perform wireless  communications using different beams, also referred to as antenna beams. The beams may include TX beams and RX beams. To illustrate, the antenna array 366 may include multiple independent sets (or subsets) of antenna elements (or multiple individual antenna arrays) , and each set of antenna elements of the antenna array 366 may be configured to communicate using a different respective beam that may have a different respective direction than the other beams. For example, a first set of antenna elements of the antenna array 366 may be configured to communicate via a first beam having a first direction, and a second set of antenna elements of the antenna array 366 may be configured to communicate via a second beam having a second direction. In other implementations, the antenna array 366 may be configured to communicate via more than two beams. Alternatively, one or more sets of antenna elements of the antenna array 366 may be configured to concurrently generate multiple beams, for example using multiple RF chains of the network node 105. Each individual set (or subset) of antenna elements may include multiple antenna elements, such as two antenna elements, four antenna elements, ten antenna elements, twenty antenna elements, or any other number of antenna elements greater than two. Although described as an antenna array, in other implementations, the antenna array 366 may include or correspond to multiple antenna panels, and each antenna panel may be configured to communicate using a different respective beam.

[0062] In some examples, an antenna port (such as a CSI-RS antenna port indicated in the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358) may be mapped to one antenna element or multiple antenna elements. The antenna port may be a logical entity to carry a resource grid, which includes a set of resource elements (REs) . An RE may be defined by one subcarrier on frequency domain and one OFDM symbol on time domain. The channel state of a RE on the antenna port may be the same as another RE on the antenna port.

[0063] In some implementations, the wireless communications system 300 implements a 5G NR network. For example, the wireless communications system 300 may include multiple 5G-capable UEs 115 and multiple 5G-capable network nodes 105, such as UEs and network nodes configured to operate in accordance with a 5G NR network protocol such as that defined by the 3GPP.

[0064] During operation of the wireless communications system 300, the network node 105 may transmit a CSI reporting configuration 356, which includes a CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 and a CSI-RS resource set configuration 360. The CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 may be associated with a CSI-RS port subset that includes multiple CSI-RS antenna ports  and is less than all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration. The multiple antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset may be associated with a resource set, which includes multiple CSI-RS resources, indicated in the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 or the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358. In some examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may specify a mapping of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset to CSI-RS resources of the resource set as a whole or as a resource set level. That is, the antenna port subset may be defined across multiple CSI-RS resources of the resource set in a resource set level. Further, the network node 105 may transmit a CSI-RS 372 on the resource set of the multiple CSI-RS resources in the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 using the port subset of the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358. Then, the network node 105 may receive a CSI report 308 including a PMI 310 in association with the CSI-RS. The PMI 310 may be determined and decoded in association with a codebook, which support more than 32 SCI-RS antenna ports. Thus, using the CSI report 308, the network node 105 may efficiently and effectively schedule downlink data transmissions (such as modulation scheme, code rate, number of transmission layers, and MIMO precoding) to the UE 115.

[0065] During operation of the wireless communications system 300, the UE 115 may receive the CSI reporting configuration 356, which includes the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 and the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360. The UE 115 may be configured with the CSI-RS port subset indicated in the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358, which includes multiple antenna ports, associated with the resource set, which includes multiple CSI-RS resources, indicated in the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 or the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358. Then, the UE 115 may receive the CSI-RS 372 on the resource set with the CSI-RS port subset. The UE 115 may measure CSI in association with the CSI-RS 372 and determine the CSI report 308 associated with the resource set and the CSI-RS port subset. The CSI report 308 may include the PMI 310, which is adaptively determined in association with a codebook. The codebook may support more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports. Additionally, the codebook may support a single panel, multiple panels, or a combination of the single panel and multiple panels in a slot. Then, the UE may transmit, to the network node 105, the CSI report 308 including the PMI 310.

[0066] As described with reference to Figure 3, the present disclosure provides techniques for CSI reporting configuration specifying a mapping of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset to CSI-RS resources of a resource set. Because a CSI-RS antenna port subset may  be defined across or mapped to CSI-RS resources of a resource set, disclosed implementations can reduce network energy consumption and computation overhead associated with the CSI reporting configuration compared to the case without CSI-RS port subset configuration, and increase throughput, increase spectral efficiency compared to a single CSI-RS resource mapped to multiple CSI-RS antenna ports (such as single CSI-RS resource’s mapped ports total is limited to be no larger than 32) .

[0067] Also, according to certain aspects, an adaptive codebook that is based on the number of antenna ports can be utilized. That is, the UE 115 may adaptively determine the codebook (such as the Type-I codebook) based on the number of antenna ports (such as equal to or less than 32 CSI-RS ports or more than 32 CSI-RS ports) in the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 and the number of panels (such as the single-panel antenna or the multi-panel antenna) . Also, the adaptively determined codebook may support not only up to 32 CSI-RS antenna ports but also more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports. That is, the codebook supporting more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports enhances system robustness, improves performance gains, and contributes to better overall network quality.

[0068] Figure 4 is a block diagram of an example UE 400 that supports reporting CSI according to a configuration that indicates a CSI-RS port subset associated with a CSI-RS resource set. The UE 400 may be configured to perform operations, including the blocks of the process 500 described with reference to Figure 5. In some implementations, the UE 400 includes the one or more chips, SoCs, chipsets, packages, structure, hardware, and components shown and described with reference to the UE 115 of Figures 2 or 3. For example, the UE 400 includes the controller 280, which operates to execute logic or computer instructions stored in the memory 282, as well as controlling the components of the UE 400 that provide the features and functionality of the UE 400. The UE 400, under control of the controller 280, transmits and receives signals via wireless radios 401a-r and the antennas 252a-r. The wireless radios 401a-r include various components and hardware, as illustrated in Figure 2 for the UE 115, including the modulator and demodulators 254a-r, the MIMO detector 256, the receive processor 258, the transmit processor 264, and the TX MIMO processor 266.

[0069] As shown, the memory 282 may include a transceiving logic 402 and a processing logic 403. The transceiving logic 402 of the UE 400 may be configured to receive signals (such as a CSI reporting configuration, a CSI-RS port subset indicator, a CSI-RS resource set configuration, a CSI-RS, and any other suitable signals) from or transmit signals (such as  a CSI report, and any other suitable signals) to one or more network entities, such as the network node 105 of Figures 1-3 or a network node as illustrated in Figure 8. The processing logic 403 may be configured to configure the UE with the received CSI reporting configuration, determine a codebook, and determine a PMI (such as the PMI 310 in Figure 3) in association with the codebook.

[0070] In some implementations, the UE 400 may be configured to perform the process 500 of Figure 5. To illustrate, the UE 400 may execute, under control of the controller 280, the transceiving logic 402 and the processing logic 403 stored in the memory 282. The execution environment of the transceiving logic 402 provides the functionality to perform at least the operations in blocks 502 and 504. The execution environment of the processing logic 403 provides the functionality to perform at least the operations in blocks 504.

[0071] Figure 5 is a flow diagram illustrating an example process performed by the UE 115 that supports reporting a CSI reporting configuration that indicates a CSI-RS port subset associated with a CSI-RS resource set according to one or more aspects. Operations of the process 500 may be performed by a UE, such as the UE 115 described above with reference to Figures 1-3 or the UE as described with reference to Figure 4. For example, example operations (also referred to as “blocks” ) of the process 500 may enable the UE 115 to perform CSI reporting using CSI reporting configuration that specify a mapping of antenna ports of a CSI-RS port subset to a CSI-RS resource set for CSI reporting.

[0072] In block 502, the UE 115 receives, from the network node 105, a CSI reporting configuration (such as the CSI reporting configuration 356 in Figure 3) . The CSI reporting configuration 356 may include configuration parameters to configure CSI-RS resources and antenna ports for CSI measurement. The CSI reporting configuration 356 may indicate a port subset that includes multiple antenna ports but is less than all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration as shown in Figure 6.

[0073] Figure 6 illustrates an example hierarchy of parameters 600 for CSI reporting according to one or more aspects. The parameters 600 may include the CSI reporting configuration 356. The CSI reporting configuration 356 may indicate CSI-RS antenna ports and multiple CSI-RS resources for CSI feedback. In some examples, the UE 115 may receive the CSI reporting configuration using a radio resource control (RRC) message. In other examples, the UE 115 may receive the CSI reporting configuration using a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC-CE) message, a downlink control information  (DCI) message, or any other suitable message. The CSI reporting configuration 356 may include multiple parameters, and each parameter may include a number, a character, a character string, a symbol, or a combination of a number, a character, a character string, or a symbol. In some examples, the parameter value may include a configuration value to enable the UE 115 to be configured with the configuration value or a reference value to refer to another configuration, which include other parameters to be configured. For example, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include a port indicator, which indicates all antenna ports for one or more resource sets. In some examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may be used for CSI feedback using all antenna ports indicated in the port indicator.

[0074] In further examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include one or more CSI reporting sub-configurations 602, 604 (such as CSI-ReportSubConfig) for corresponding CSI reports 372 using one or more corresponding antenna port subsets of the all antenna ports. For example, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include a list of CSI reporting sub-configurations 602, 604 (such as csi-ReportSubConfigToAddModList) . The list may include identifications of the CSI reporting sub-configurations 602, 604, wherein each identification may indicate or refer to a set of parameters for the respective CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. In some examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may be for a superset CSI report which includes the one or more CSI reports corresponding to the one or more CSI reporting sub-configurations 602, 604. Each CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 for the CSI reporting configuration 356 may have different configurations (such as different number of antenna ports for a resource set) for a corresponding CSI report. Thus, CSI reporting sub-configurations 602, 604 may enable the network node 105 to save energy to transmit a CSI-RS using a CSI-RS port subset and enable the UE to provide a specific CSI report associated with less antenna ports than all antenna ports in the CSI reporting configuration 356.

[0075] A CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 of the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include a CSI-RS port subset indicator (such as the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 in Figure 3) , which indicates a CSI-RS port subset. In some examples, the port subset may include one or more antenna ports and be less than the all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356. The CSI reporting configuration 356 may be associated with one or more different port subsets corresponding to one or more CSI reporting sub-configuration 602, 604.

[0076] In some examples, the CSI-RS port subset indication 358 may include, and the CSI-RS port subset may be indicated as, a single bitmap. The single bitmap may include multiple bits corresponding to the all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356. For example, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may indicate 128 antenna ports (such as Port 3000 -Port 3127) . In such examples, the single bitmap may include 128 bits. When the CSI-RS port subset may include 32 antenna ports from Port 3000 to Port 3031, the first 32 bits in the single bitmap corresponding to the port subset may be activated (such as 1) while other bits in the single bitmap may be deactivated (such as 0) . Thus, the single bitmap of the port subset indication 358 may indicate the port subset of the all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356. In this way, the single bitmap may be extended to up to 128 bits or up to any other suitable bits. The all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356 may be any other suitable antenna ports (such as 32, 64, or any other suitable antenna ports) .

[0077] In other examples, the port subset indication 358 may include, and the port subset may be indicated as, a two-level bitmap. For example, a first bitmap of the two-level bitmap may indicate the multiple CSI-RS resources of the resource set, and a second bitmap of the two-level bitmap may indicate the multiple antenna ports for being mapped or defined across the resource set of the multiple CSI-RS resources. For example, the second bitmap may indicate the mapping of the resource set of the first bitmap to one or more CSI-RS antenna ports of the port subset. In some implementations, the port subset corresponding to a subset of bits in the second bitmap may be configured only for the resource set corresponding a set of bits in the first bitmap. Thus, the second bitmap may only indicate one or more CSI-RS antenna ports associated with CSI-RS resources that are indicated as available in the first bitmap. The first bitmap may indicate how many CSI-RS resources (2, 3, 4, or any other suitable number of CSI-RS resources) are available in a resource set. For example, when the first bitmap has 4 bits, each bit may indicate whether a corresponding CSI-RS resource is available. In some scenarios, when the first bitmap indicates ‘1110, ’ the first three CSI-RS resources in the resource set are indicated as available while the last CSI-RS resource is indicated as unavailable. In some examples, antenna ports indicated in the second bitmap may be configured only for the first three CSI-RS resources. For example, when the first bitmap and second bitmap indicate ‘1110’ and ‘11110000, ’ respectively, each of the first three CSI-RS resources corresponding to the first three bits of the first bitmap may be mapped to first four antenna ports of the all  antenna ports (8 antenna ports in this example) corresponding to the first four bits of the second bitmap. In such examples, the first four antenna ports of the all antenna ports may not be configured for the fourth CSI-RS resource. In this way, the configuration overhead can be reduced. In the examples, each CSI-RS resource may be mapped up to 32 bits or any other suitable bits (such as 64 bits, 128 bits, or any other suitable bits) corresponding to antenna ports.

[0078] In other examples, the port subset indication 358 may include, and the port subset may be indicated as, a common port level bitmap associated with each of the CSI-RS resources. The bitmap may include bits up to 32 bits, 64 bits, 128 bits, or any other suitable bits corresponding to antenna ports of each of the CSI-RS resources. For example, a common 32-bit bitmap applies same for port {0 to 31} , {32 to 63} , {64 to 95} , and {96 to 127} . In such implementations, the activated and deactivated antenna ports in all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356 may be symmetric.

[0079] In even further examples, the port subset may be indicated in any other suitable means (such as number, characters, symbols) . For example, each antenna port of the port subset may be indicated as a number to indicate the status, type, capacity, or any other suitable characteristic of the antenna port.

[0080] Further, the CSI-RS port subset may be associated with a resource set that includes multiple CSI-RS resources. For example, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include a CSI resource configuration 606 (CSI-ResourceConfig) . The CSI resource configuration 606 may contain a list 608 of CSI-RS resource set configurations (CSI-RS-ResourceSetList) . Each CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 may define a resource set 610 including multiple CSI-RS resources 612 or indicate how many CSI-RS resources 612 are available for a resource set. For example, the resource set may include multiple CSI-RS resources 612 (such as 2, 3, or 4 CSI-RS resources, or any other suitable number of CSI-RS resources) or indicate that the multiple CSI-RS resources 612 are available. A CSI-RS resource 612 may include a non-zero-power CSI-RS (NZP-CSI-RS) resource or any other suitable resource (such as a synchronization signal block (SSB) resource) , which includes a set of REs, to carry the CSI-RS 372. In some examples, a CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 may include one or more resource configurations. Each resource configuration may define a CSI-RS resource 612 or how a set of REs is allocated for the CSI-RS 372.

[0081] In one conventional technique, the resource mapping to multiple CSI-RS antenna ports is defined in each CSI-RS resource. For example, the resource configuration of a CSI-RS resource 612 includes an antenna port indication (such as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32) to map the CSI-RS resource 612 to the indicated antenna ports. Contrary to the conventional technique, the disclosed methods and systems may map antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset to multiple CSI-RS resources of a resource set in the resource set level. Thus, the resource set as a whole may be mapped to the port subset.

[0082] For example, the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 may include a mapping configuration to indicate a mapping of the resource set as a whole or a resource set level to the port subset. In some examples, the mapping configuration may be associated with or included in the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 in the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. In some scenarios with the single bitmap to indicate the port subset, the mapping configuration may map the single bitmap (such as each bit of the single bitmap) to a resource set in a CSI-RS resource set configuration 360, which defines multiple CSI-RS resources to be included or available in the resource set. The resource set as a whole may be mapped to multiple antenna ports of the port subset in the single bitmap. In some examples, each CSI-RS resource of the resource set may be further mapped to the multiple antenna ports. In other scenarios with the two-level bitmap, the first bitmap may indicate which CSI-RS resources are available in the resource set. In some examples, although the resource set may include 4 CSI-RS resources, the first bitmap may indicate 3 CSI-RS resources are available. In other examples, the first bitmap may indicate the resource set to include 3 CSI-RS resources. In this way, the resource set indicated as the first bitmap in a resource set level may be mapped to the CSI-RS port subset. In further scenarios with the common port level bitmap, each CSI-RS resource of the resource set (such as indicated in the CSI-RS resource set configuration 360 or the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 ) may be mapped to multiple antenna ports in the common port level bitmap indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356. In even further examples, the mapping configuration may be included in the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 or separated from the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. Thus, the UE may be configured with the port subset associated with the resource set such that the resource set as a whole is mapped to the port subset.

[0083] In block 504, the UE 115 transmits, to the network node 105, a CSI report associated with the multiple CSI-RS resources of the CSI-RS resource set and the multiple antenna ports  of the CSI-RS port subset. To transmit the CSI report, the UE 115 may receive, from the network node 105, a CSI-RS on the resource set mapped to the CSI-RS port subset. The CSI-RS may be a reference signal transmitted from the network node 105 to measure channel quality or channel characteristics of a downlink radio channel. In some examples, the CSI-RS may be substantially similar to the CSI-RS 372 in Figure 3. For example, the UE may receive the CSI-RS 372 on the resource set using the port subset reporting configuration (such as the CSI reporting configuration 356 in Figure 3) .

[0084] In some examples, the UE 115 measures CSI associated with the CSI-RS 372. For example, the CSI may indicate channel properties on the resource set about how a signal propagates from the network node to the UE 115. In some examples, the CSI may include various components (such as a rank indication (RI) , a PMI, and a channel quality indication (CQI) ) . A combination of the components may form the CSI report (such as the CSI report 308 in Figure 3) . Among the indications, a PMI (the PMI 310 in Figure 3) may indicate a preferred precoding matrix to enable the network node 105 to use for a downlink transmission (such as a downlink shared channel transmission (DL-SCH) transmission) .

[0085] In some examples, the UE 115 may determine the PMI 310 in association with a codebook. In some examples, the codebook may be based on a codebook type, the antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356, or the CSI-RS port subset indicated in the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. For example, the codebook is based on the codebook type (such as Type I codebook or Type II codebook) . In some examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include a codebook configuration to indicate the codebook type. For example, the codebook configuration may indicate the Type I codebook to the UE to be configured with the Type I codebook to determine the PMI 310.

[0086] Further, the UE 115 may determine the codebook based on the antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration 356 and the CSI-RS port subset indicated in the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. For example, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may configure the UE 115 with a first codebook for antenna ports being more than a predetermined number (such as 32 antenna ports) of antenna ports. The first codebook may be a codebook that supports antenna ports, which are more than a predetermined number of antenna ports. For example, when the CSI reporting configuration 356 indicates more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports (such as the predetermined number of antenna ports) , the CSI reporting configuration 356 may configure the UE 115 with the  Rel. 19 Type I codebook (such as the first codebook) . In some examples, the antenna ports for the CSI reporting configuration 356 may include the sum of the antenna ports of the one or more CSI-RS port subset indicators 358 of the CSI reporting configuration 356. In other examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may have a parameter to indicate the antenna ports. Thus, the UE 115 may determine the first codebook for antenna ports that are more than a predetermined number.

[0087] Although the CSI reporting configuration 356 configure the UE 115 with the first codebook, the UE 115 may determine whether the codebook for the PMI 310 is the first codebook or the second codebook in association with the port subset. That is, each CSI reporting sub-configuration 602, 604 may configure the UE 115 with the same codebook or a different codebook in association with the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358. For example, when a number of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset is more than the predetermined number of antennas ports, the codebook for the PMI may the first codebook. On the other hand, when the number of antenna ports in the port subset is equal to or fewer than the predetermined number of antennas ports, the codebook for the PMI may be the second codebook. The second codebook may be different than the first codebook. In some examples, the second codebook may be a codebook, which is able to support up to the predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports. In some examples, the second codebook may be an existing codebook, which supports antenna ports up to the existing antenna port limit. Thus, the UE may adaptively determine the codebook for the PMI 310 in real time or near real time when the UE receives the CSI reporting configuration 356 or the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. Also, because the codebooks may include the existing codebook, the adaptive codebook between the first codebook and the second codebook may be compatible with the existing technology using the second codebook and at the same time may support new technology that uses more antenna ports than the existing antenna port limit.

[0088] For example, the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 of the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 may indicate whether the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset are more than the predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports. In such examples, the UE 115 may determine the first codebook for the PMI. For example, when the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 of the CSI reporting sub-configuration indicates that the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset are more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports (such as the predetermined number of antenna ports) , the UE 115 may determine that the codebook for the PMI is  the Release 19 Type I codebook (such as the first codebook) . On the other hand, the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 of the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 may indicate that the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset are equal to or less than the predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports. In such examples, the UE 115 may determine another codebook (such as the second codebook) for the PMI 310. For example, when the CSI-RS port subset indicator 358 of the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 indicates that the antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset are equal to or less 32 CSI-RS antenna ports (such as the predetermined number of antenna ports) , the UE 115 may determine that the codebook for the PMI is the Release 15 Type I codebook (such as the second codebook) .

[0089] Figure 7 shows example codebooks 700 according to one or more aspects. When the number of the antenna ports in the CSI-RS port subset is more than the predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports (such as 32 CSI-RS antenna ports) , the UE 115 may use the first codebook 702. When the number of the antenna ports in the port subset is equal to or fewer than the predetermined number of CSI-RS antenna ports, the UE 115 may use the second codebook 704. Thus, the codebook for the port subset of the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 may be different than the codebook for the CSI reporting configuration 356. In some examples, the first codebook 702 may include a first single-panel codebook 706 (such as Release 19 single-panel Type I codebook) and a first multi-panel codebook 708 (such as Release 19 multi-panel Type I codebook) . Similarly, the second codebook 704 may include a second single-panel codebook 710 (such as Release 15 single-panel Type I codebook) and a second multi-panel codebook 712 (such as Release 15 multi-panel Type I codebook) . The UE 115 may determine a single-panel codebook 706, 710 and a multi-panel codebook 708, 712 in association with the CSI reporting configuration 356 or the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. Here, a panel may be a group of antenna elements or one or more antenna arrays. In further examples, the first codebook may further include a mixed-panel codebook for a combination of one or more single-panel CSI-RS antenna elements and one or more multi-panel antenna elements. For example, the mixed-panel codebook may be an extension of Type-I single-panel codebook by adding inter-panel co-phasing.

[0090] In some examples, the first codebook 702 and the second codebook 704 may have different panel configurations. For example, the first codebook 702 may include the first single-panel codebook 706 and the first multi-panel codebook 708 while the second codebook 704 may include the second single-panel codebook 710 without the second  multi-panel codebook 812. In such examples, when the number of antenna ports of the port subset is more than the predetermined number of antenna ports, the UE 115 may not use the CSI reporting configuration 356 or the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 to determine the second single-panel codebook 710 or the second multi-panel codebook 712. Thus, in some examples, the codebook type may not need to be configured when the number of CSI-RS antenna ports of the port subset is more than the predetermined number of antenna ports.

[0091] In further examples, the CSI reporting configuration 356 may indicate the number of antenna ports is equal to or fewer than a predetermined number (such as 32 antenna ports) of antenna ports. In such examples, the codebook for the PMI, which correspond to the port subset of the CSI reporting sub-configuration, may be the second codebook (such as the Rel. 15 codebook) or any other suitable codebook.

[0092] The UE 115 transmits, from the network node 105, the CSI report associated with the measured CSI. In some examples, the CSI report 308 may correspond to the port subset or the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602 in Figure 6. Further, the UE 115 may determine the CSI report 308 using the CSI reporting sub-configuration 602. The CSI report 308 may include the PMI determined in association with the codebook. Thus, the UE 115 transmits channel status and quality of the CSI-RS 372 via the CSI report.

[0093] Accordingly, the UE may support communications with reduced computation overhead of the CSI reporting configuration 356 with increased throughput and spectral efficiency due to the resource set, which include multiple CSI-RS resources, mapped to the CSI-RS port subset. In addition, the UE 115 may adaptively determine the codebook (such as whether the codebook is the Release 15 codebook or the Release 19 codebook) in association with the number of antenna ports of the port subset and the number of panels (such as the single-panel antenna or the multi-panel antenna) in real time or near real time. Also, the adaptively determined codebook may support not only up to 32 CSI-RS antenna ports but also more than 32 CSI-RS antenna ports. That is, the codebook supporting more 32 CSI-RS antenna ports may enhance system robustness, improve performance gains, and contribute to better overall network quality.

[0094] Figure 8 is a block diagram of an example network node 800 that supports a CSI reporting configuration indicating a CSI-RS port subset associated with a resource set  according to one or more aspects. The network node 800 may be configured to perform operations, including the blocks of the process 900 described with reference to Figure 9, respectively.  In some implementations, the network node 800 includes the one or more chips, SoCs, chipsets, packages, structure, hardware, and components shown and described with reference to the network node 105 of Figures 1-3. For example, the network node 800 may include the controller 240, which operates to execute logic or computer instructions stored in the memory 242, as well as controlling the components of the network node 800 that provide the features and functionality of the network node 900. The network node 800, under control of the controller 240, transmits and receives signals via wireless radios 901a-t and the antennas 234a-t. The wireless radios 901a-t include various components and hardware, as illustrated in Figure 2 for the network node 105, including the modulator and demodulators 232a-t, the transmit processor 220, the TX MIMO processor 230, the MIMO detector 236, and the receive processor 238.

[0095] As shown, the memory 242 may include a configuration generation logic 802 and a transceiving logic 803. The configuration generation logic 802 may determine parameters for CSI reporting (such as a CSI reporting configuration, a CSI reporting sub-configuration, a CSI-RS port subset indicator, and a CSI-RS resource set configuration) . The transceiving logic 803 of the network node 800 may be configured to transmit signals (such as a CSI reporting configuration, a CSI reporting sub-configuration, a CSI-RS port subset indicator, a CSI-RS resource set configuration, a CSI-RS, and any other suitable signals) from or receive signals (such as a CSI report and any other suitable signals) to one or more UEs, such as the UES 115 of Figures 1-3 or a UE 400 as illustrated in Figure 4.

[0096] In some implementations, the network node 800 may be configured to perform the process 900 of Figure 9. To illustrate, the network node 800 may execute, under control of the controller 240, the configuration generation logic 802 and the transceiving logic 803 stored in the memory 242. The execution environment of the configuration generation logic 802 provides the functionality to perform at least the operations in block 902. The execution environment of the transceiving logic 803 provides the functionality to perform at least the operations in blocks 902 and 904 in Figure 9.

[0097] Figure 9 is a flow diagram illustrating an example process performed by a network node that supports a CSI reporting configuration indicating a CSI-RS port subset associated with a CSI-RS resource set according to one or more aspects. Operations of the process 900 may be performed by a network node, such as the network node 105 described above with reference to Figures 1-3 or a network node as described with reference to Figure 8.  For example, example blocks of the process 900 may enable the network node 105 to receive a CSI report using an adaptable codebook.

[0098] In block 902, the network node 105 transmits, to a UE, a CSI reporting configuration indicating a CSI-RS port subset that includes multiple antenna ports associated with a CSI-RS resource set that includes multiple CSI-RS resources. The multiple antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset may be less than all antenna ports associated with the CSI-RS resource set. The network node 105 may determine the CSI reporting configuration 356 in Figures 3 and 6. In some examples, block 902 may correspond to block 502 in Figure 5.

[0099] In some examples, the port subset may be indicated as a single bitmap including multiple bits corresponding to the all antenna ports indicated in the CSI reporting configuration. In further examples, the port subset is indicated as a two-level bitmap. A first bitmap of the two-level bitmap may indicate the multiple CSI-RS resources of the resource set, and a second bitmap of the two-level bitmap may indicate multiple CSI-RS antenna ports for being mapped or defined across the resource set of the multiple CSI-RS resources. In further examples, the network node 105 may configure the port subset corresponding to a subset of bits in the second bitmap only for the resource set corresponding a set of bits in the first bitmap. In some examples, each CSI-RS resource of the resource set is mapped to the multiple antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset for the CSI report.

[0100] In some examples, the network node 105 may transmit the CSI-RS (such as the CSI-RS 372 in Figure 3) on the resource set of the multiple CSI-RS resources mapped to the port subset of multiple CSI-RS antenna ports. In some examples, the CSI report may include a PMI associated with a codebook. When the CSI reporting configuration 356 indicates antenna ports that are more than a predetermined number of antenna ports, the codebook may be a first codebook or a second codebook in association with the port subset. For example, when a number of the port subset is more than the predetermined number of antennas ports, the codebook may be the first codebook. When the number of the port subset is equal to or fewer than the predetermined number of antennas ports, the codebook may be the second codebook. The second codebook may be different than the first codebook and may support the CSI-RS antenna ports, which are more than the predetermined number of antenna ports. In some examples, the network node 105 may determine the codebook by decoding the PMI.

[0101] It is noted that one or more blocks (or operations) described with reference to Figure 5 may be combined with one or more blocks (or operations) described with reference to another of the figures. For example, one or more blocks associated with Figure 5 may be combined with one or more blocks (or operations) associated with Figures 1, 2, or 3. Similarly, one or more blocks (or operations) described with reference to Figure 9 may be combined with one or more blocks (or operations) described with reference to another of the figures. For example, one or more blocks associated with Figure 9 may be combined with one or more blocks (or operations) associated with Figures 1, 2, or 3.

[0102] In some aspects, techniques for enabling a UE to support a CSI indicating a CSI-RS port subset associated with a CSI-RS resource set may include additional aspects, such as any single aspect or any combination of aspects described below or in connection with one or more other processes or devices described elsewhere herein. In a first aspect, supporting wireless communications may include a method comprising: receiving, from a network node, a CSI reporting configuration indicating a CSI-RS port subset that includes a plurality of antenna ports associated with a CSI-RS resource set that includes a plurality of CSI-RS resources, the plurality of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset being less than all antenna ports associated with the CSI-RS resource set; and transmitting, to the network node, a CSI report associated with the plurality of CSI-RS resources of the CSI-RS resource set and the plurality of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset.

[0103] In a second aspect, alone or in combination with the first aspect, the CSI-RS port subset is indicated as a single bitmap comprising a plurality of bits corresponding to the all antenna ports.

[0104] In a third aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first aspect or second aspect, the CSI-RS port subset is indicated as a two-level bitmap, a first bitmap of the two-level bitmap indicating the plurality of CSI-RS resources of the resource set, and a second bitmap of the two-level bitmap indicating the plurality of antenna ports mapped across the resource set of the plurality of CSI-RS resources.

[0105] In a fourth aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first aspect through third aspect, the port subset corresponding to a subset of bits in the second bitmap is configured only for the resource set corresponding a set of bits in the first bitmap.

[0106] In a fifth aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first aspect through fourth aspect, each CSI-RS resource of the resource set is mapped to the plurality of antenna ports of the CSI-RS port subset for the CSI report.

[0107] In a sixth aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first aspect through fifth aspect, the method further comprises: receiving, from the network node, a CSI-RS on the resource set mapped to the CSI-RS port subset, the transmitting the CSI report includes: measuring CSI in association with the CSI-RS; and transmitting, to the network node, the CSI report associated with the CSI.

[0108] In a seventh aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first aspect through the sixth aspect, the CSI report includes a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , and the method further comprises: determining the PMI in association with a codebook.

[0109] In an eighth aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through the seventh aspect, the CSI reporting configuration is configured with a first codebook for antenna ports that are more than a predetermined number of antenna ports, and the method further comprises: determining whether the codebook is the first codebook or a second codebook in association with the CSI-RS port subset.

[0128] In one or more aspects, the functions described may be implemented in hardware, digital electronic circuitry, computer software, firmware, including the structures disclosed in this specification and their structural equivalents thereof, or in any combination thereof. Implementations of the subject matter described in this specification also can be implemented as one or more computer programs, that is one or more modules of computer program instructions, encoded on a computer storage media for execution by, or to control the operation of, data processing apparatus.

[0129] If implemented in software, the functions may be stored on or transmitted over as one or more instructions or code on a computer-readable medium. The processes of a method or algorithm disclosed herein may be implemented in a processor-executable software module which may reside on a computer-readable medium. Computer-readable media includes both computer storage media and communication media including any medium that can be enabled to transfer a computer program from one place to another. A storage media may be any available media that may be accessed by a computer. By way of example, and not limitation, such computer-readable media may include random-access memory (RAM) or read-only memory (ROM) , or combinations thereof (all of which may be generally referred to herein individually as “memories” or collectively as “the memory” or “the memory circuitry” ) ” ) . One or more of the memories may be coupled with one or more of the processors and may individually or collectively store processor-executable code that, when executed by one or more of the processors, may configure one or more of the processors to perform various functions or operations described herein. Additionally or alternatively, in some examples, one or more of the processors may be preconfigured to perform various functions or operations described herein without requiring configuration by software. Also, any connection can be properly termed a computer-readable medium. Disk and disc, as used herein, includes compact disc (CD) , laser disc, optical disc, digital versatile disc (DVD) , floppy disk, and Blu-ray disc where disks usually reproduce data magnetically, while discs reproduce data optically with lasers. Combinations of the above should also be included within the scope of computer-readable media. Additionally, the operations of a method or algorithm may reside as one  or any combination or set of codes and instructions on a machine readable medium and computer-readable medium, which may be incorporated into a computer program product.

[0130] Various modifications to the implementations described in this disclosure may be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the generic principles defined herein may be applied to some other implementations without departing from the spirit or scope of this disclosure. Thus, the claims are not intended to be limited to the implementations shown herein, but are to be accorded the widest scope consistent with this disclosure, the principles and the novel features disclosed herein.

[0131] Additionally, a person having ordinary skill in the art will readily appreciate, the terms “upper” and “lower” are sometimes used for ease of describing the figures, and indicate relative positions corresponding to the orientation of the figure on a properly oriented page, and may not reflect the proper orientation of any device as implemented.

[0132] Certain features that are described in this specification in the context of separate implementations also can be implemented in combination in a single implementation. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single implementation also can be implemented in multiple implementations separately or in any suitable subcombination. Moreover, although features may be described above as acting in certain combinations and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can in some cases be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a subcombination or variation of a subcombination.

[0133] Similarly, while operations are depicted in the drawings in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. Further, the drawings may schematically depict one more example processes in the form of a flow diagram. However, other operations that are not depicted can be incorporated in the example processes that are schematically illustrated. For example, one or more additional operations can be performed before, after, simultaneously, or between any of the illustrated operations. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Moreover, the separation of various system components in the implementations described above should not be understood as requiring such separation in all implementations, and it should be understood that the described program components and systems can generally be integrated together in a single software product or packaged into multiple software  products. Additionally, some other implementations are within the scope of the following claims. In some cases, the actions recited in the claims can be performed in a different order and still achieve desirable results.

[0134] As used herein, including in the claims, the term “or, ” when used in a list of two or more items, means that any one of the listed items can be employed by itself, or any combination of two or more of the listed items can be employed. For example, if a composition is described as containing components A, B, or C, the composition can contain A alone; B alone; C alone; A and B in combination; A and C in combination; B and C in combination; or A, B, and C in combination. Also, as used herein, including in the claims, “or” as used in a list of items prefaced by “at least one of” indicates a disjunctive list such that, for example, a list of “at least one of A, B, or C” means A or B or C or AB or AC or BC or ABC (that is A and B and C) or any of these in any combination thereof. The term “substantially” is defined as largely but not necessarily wholly what is specified (and includes what is specified; for example, substantially 90 degrees includes 90 degrees and substantially parallel includes parallel) , as understood by a person of ordinary skill in the art. In any disclosed implementations, the term “substantially” may be substituted with “within [a percentage] of” what is specified, where the percentage includes . 1, 1, 5, or 10 percent.
