[0001] Compositions comprising lactic acid esters and PBSA

[0002] Field of the invention

[0003] The present invention relates to a sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection, comprising: (i) at least one ester of lactic acid; (ii) phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA) and / or its salts; and, optionally, (iii) at least one additional UV filter other than phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic, wherein the pH of the composition is within the range of 5.0 to 8.0. The present invention furthermore relates to the use of phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and / or it salts for improving the stability of a sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection comprising at least one ester of lactic acid.

[0004] Background of the invention

[0005] UV radiation causes harmful effects on the human skin. Beside the acute effect of sunburn of the skin, UV radiation is also known to increase the risk of skin cancer. Furthermore, long time exposure to UV-A and UV-B light can cause phototoxic and photo allergenic reactions on the skin and can accelerate skin aging.

[0006] To protect the human skin from UV radiation, various sun protecting UV filters (also referred to as UV absorbers) exist including UV-A filter, UV-B filter and broadband filters. These filters are added to sunscreen or daily care compositions. The UV filters are either organic or inorganic, particulate or non-particulate compounds, of which all have an absorption efficacy in the UV-light range. In general, UV light reaching the earth surface can be divided into UV-A radiation and UV-B radiation. Depending on the position of the absorption maxima, UV-filters are divided into UV-A and UV-B filters. In case an UV-filter absorbs both, UV-A and UV-B light, it is referred to as a broadband absorber. Since broadband UV filters provide protection against UVA and UVB radiation it is preferred to add these kind of UV filters into sunscreen or daily care composition. However, there is still the need of improved formulations that provide efficient and safe UV protection.

[0007] Particularly, regarding user requirements, it appears that sunscreen or daily care compositions having a satisfying stability, especially over periods of prolonged storage and / or at elevated temperatures, i.e., temperatures above room temperature (20 to 25 °C), are preferred.

[0008] Against this background, there is an ongoing need for sunscreen or daily care compositions for the daily use, which provide efficient sun protection and meet the consumer’s demands with respect to protection performance and overall convenience, particularly with respect to stability. In particular, it was an object of the present invention to provide efficient and stable sunscreen or daily care compositions.

[0009] Next generation UV filters often comprise substantial amounts of solid UV filters which need to be dissolved in the compositions. It has been found that lauryl lactate is well suited for solubilizing solid lipophilic UV filters but suffers from the drawback of potentially inducing a lowering of the pH (typically overtime), which is undesired. It has now been found that phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA) or is salts, which is an UV filter itself, can reduce or even prevent said pH decrease induced by lauryl lactate. The combination of lauryl lactate and PBSA or it salts thus allows to make use of the advantageous properties of lauryl lactate while avoiding the previously observed drawbacks.

[0010] Summary of the invention

[0011] Thus, in a first aspect, the present invention provides a sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection, comprising:

[0012] (i) at least one ester of lactic acid;

[0013] (ii) phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA) and / or its salts; and, optionally,

[0014] (iii) at least one UV filter other than phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid; wherein the pH of the composition is within the range of 5.0 to 8.0.

[0015] In some embodiments, the pH of the composition is maintained within the range of 5.0 to 8.0 or above 5.5 to 7.5 over a storage period of at least one week at a temperature of about 25 °C. In some embodiments, the pH is maintained within the given range over a period of storage of at least two weeks, preferably at least four weeks, or at least 8 or 12 weeks, preferably one year, preferably 2 years at 25°C.

Claims

Claims1 . A sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection, comprising:(i) at least one ester of lactic acid in an amount of 1 .5 to 20 wt.-% based on the total weight of the composition;(ii) phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and / or a salt thereof in an amount of 0.5 to 8 wt.-% based on the total weight of the composition; and(iii) at least one UV filter other than phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, wherein said at least one UV filter other than phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid comprises at least bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT), preferably in an amount of from 0.5 to 10 wt.-% based on the total weight of the composition; wherein the pH of the composition is within the range of 5.0 to 8.0; and wherein the weight ratio of (i) to (ii) is 1 :2 to 5:1 .

2. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is maintained within the range of 5.0 to 8.0, preferably 5.5 to 7.5, over a storage period of at least one week at a temperature of about 25 °C or at about 40°C.

The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one ester of lactic acid and / or salt thereof is selected from the group consisting of oleyl lactate, lauryl lactate, myristyl lactate, glyceryl lactate, tridecyl lactate, stearyl lactate, isostearyl lactate, and behenyl lactate, preferably lauryl lactate.

4. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one ester of lactic acid and / or salt thereof is present in an amount of 2 to 15 wt.-%, preferably 3 to 10 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and / or salt thereof is present in an amount of 0.7 to 5.0 wt.-%, preferably 1.0 to 4.0 wt.-% or 1.5 to 3.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the weight ratio of the at least one ester of lactic acid and the phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and / or the salt thereof is 1 :1.5 to 4.5:1 , preferably 1 :1.2 to 4:1 , more preferably 1 :1 to 3:1 or 1 :1 to 2:1.

The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises the least one UV filter other than PBSA in an amount of 2 to 40 wt.-%, preferably of 5 to 35 wt.-%, more preferably of 5 to 30 wt.-%, still more preferably of 5 to 25 wt-%, and in particular of 8 to 20 wt.-%, based on the composition.

8. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one UV filter other than PBSA comprises in addition to BEMT(1) a UV filter that is solid at 25°C;(2) a UV filter that is soluble in at least one cosmetic oil;(3) an organic UV filter; and / or(4) a particulate UV filter.

9. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one UV filter other than PBSA is solid at 25°C and soluble in at least one cosmetic oil.

The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises, in addition to phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, at least one UVA filter, preferably selected from the group consisting of disodium phenyl dibenzimidazole tetrasulfonate (DPDT), hexyl 2-[4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoyl]benzoate (INCI diethylamino hydroxy benzoyl hexyl benzoate, DHHB), 1-(4-(1 ,1-dimethylethyl)phenyl)-3-(4- methoxyphenyl)propane-1 , 3-dione (INCI butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, BMDBM), methoxypropylamino cyclohexenylidene ethoxyethylcyanoacetate (MCE), terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid (TDSA), and combinations thereof; and / or at least one UVB filter, preferably selected from the group consisting of 4,4',4"-(1 ,3,5-triazine- 2,4,6-triyltriimino)tris-benzoic acid-tris(2-ethylhexyl)ester (INCI ethylhexyl triazone, EHT), 4,4'-[[6-[[4- [[(1 ,1-dimethylethyl)amino]carbonyl]phenyl]amino]-1 ,3,5-triazin-2,4-diyl]diimino]bis-benzoic acid- bis(2-ethylhexyl)ester (INCI diethylhexyl butamido triazone, DBT), and combinations thereof; and / or at least one broadband UV filter, preferably selected from the group consisting of 2-(2H- benzotriazol-2-yl)-6-[(2-ethylhexyloxy)methyl]-4-methylphenol, 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-methyl-6- [2-methyl-3-[1 ,3,3,3-tetramethyl-1-[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]-1-disiloxanyl]propyl]phenol (INCI drometrizole trisiloxane, DTS), 2,2'-methylenbis[6-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1 ,1 ,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol] (INCI methylene Bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, MBBT), phenylene bis-diphenyltriazine (PBDT), and combinations thereof; and / or at least one organic particulate UV filter, preferably selected from the group consisting of 2,2'- methylene bis[6-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1 ,1 ,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol] (INCI methylene bis- benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol), 2,4,6-tris(biphenyl-4-yl)-1 ,3,5-triazine (INCI trisbiphenyl triazine, TBPT), 1 ,1 ’-(1 ,4-piperazinediyl)bis[1 -[2-[4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoyl]phenyl]- methanone (INCI bis-(diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoyl) piperazine), 5,6,5’,6’-tetraphenyl-3-3’- (1 ,4-phenylene)bis(1 ,2,4-triazine) (INCI phenylene bis-diphenyltriazine; PBDT), micronized 1 ,4- di(benzoxazole-2'-yl)benzene and combinations thereof; and / or at least one inorganic UV filter, preferably selected from the group consisting of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxide, cerium oxide and mixtures thereof.11 . The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising at least one UV filter selected from diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate(DHHB), methoxypropylamino cyclohexenylidene ethoxyethylcyanoacetate (MCE), butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM), ethylhexyl triazone (EHT), methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol (MBBT), tris-biphenyl triazine (TBPT), and any combination of two or more thereof.

12. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising, relative to the total weight of the composition,(i) at least one ester of lactic acid in an amount of 1 .5 to 20 wt.-%;(ii) phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA) and / or a salt thereof in an amount of 0.5 to 8 wt- %;(iii) BEMT in an amount of from 0.5 to 10 wt.-%;(iv) DHHB, in an amount of from 0.5 to 8.0 wt.-%;(v) EHT, in an amount of from 0.5 to 5.0 wt.-%; and, optionally,(vi) at least one organic particulate UV filter selected from the group consisting of 2,2'-methylene bis[6-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1 ,1 ,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol] (INCI methylene bis- benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol), 2,4,6-tris(biphenyl-4-yl)-1 ,3,5-triazine (INCI trisbiphenyl triazine, TBPT), and 5,6,5’,6’-tetraphenyl-3-3’-(1 ,4-phenylene)bis(1 ,2,4-triazine) (INCI phenylene bis-diphenyltriazine; PBDT) in an amount of from 0.5 to 10.0 wt.-%, wherein the total amount of UV filters in the composition including PBSA and BEMT is 8 to 40 wt.-%; and wherein the weight ratio of (i) to (ii) is 1 :2 to 5:1 .

13. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising BEMT in an amount of wt.-%1 to 5 wt.-% and preferably 2 to 4 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

14. The sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein(1) the composition is free of at least one or more of parabens, and organic UV filter compounds selected from the group of homomenthyl salicylate, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, and ethylhexyl salicylate; and / or(2) the composition further comprises at least one additive, preferably selected from the group consisting of emulsifiers, emollients, viscosity regulators, buffering and pH adjustment agents, stabilizers, sensory enhancers, film formers, UV scattering compounds, UV protection booster compounds, adjuvants, preservatives, perfumes, and combinations thereof.

15. Use of phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and / orsalt thereof for improving the stability of a sunscreen or daily care composition with photoprotection comprising at least one ester of lactic acid.
