[0002] Field of the invention
[0003] The present invention relates to personal care composition. Particularly, the present invention relates to a personal care composition comprising one or more pigments.
[0004] Background of the invention
[0005] People tend to make use of various personal care products with the intention of taking care of their external surfaces e.g. skin, hair and nails. For this, there are various personal care products that are available. These include personal care products in the form of e.g. a cream, a gel, a serum and a foundation and color cosmetics.
[0006] There are pigments containing products, e.g. a foundation composition, that are available in the market. These foundation compositions are intended more for occasional use; and it provides a high coverage, i.e. it creates an apparent another layer on the skin. Whilst such pigments containing foundation are available, they often are available in the form of water-in-oil emulsions. Such compositions tend to contain significant amounts of oily components in the composition (oilheavy compositions).
[0007] On the other hand, consumers tend to look for pigments containing compositions that are more for everyday use; and which provide low coverage. Generally, for everyday or frequent use, they tend to prefer compositions that do not create an apparent obvious layer on the skin but still serve the purpose of hiding imperfections e.g. a pimple, that may be present on the skin. Additionally, they prefer if such compositions, that are suitable for everyday use, are delivered with one or more benefits e.g. moisturization. However, delivering such benefits like moisturization through compositions like pigments containing foundation compositions, is quite difficult as they tend to be oil heavy.
[0008] On the other hand delivering pigments in a composition that contains substantial amounts of water e.g. a moisturizing composition and a serum composition, is another challenge as pigments e.g. iron oxide, tends to separate out and lead to an unstable composition.
[0009] The present inventors have addressed these needs and have found a personal care composition e.g. a serum composition, that contains pigments as well as a substantial amount of water but still results in a stable composition. They found that the inventive composition in an oil-in-water emulsion format did not lead to separation and / or precipitation of pigments thus providing a stable product. Further, they found that water soluble actives like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, may also be delivered through the same composition, through the oil-in-water emulsion format of the present invention.

[0011] Accordingly, in a first aspect, the present invention relates to a personal care composition comprising: a. from 0.1 to 10 wt% of a pigment, b. from 0.1 to 15 wt% of an emulsifier, c. from 0.001 to 20 wt% of an emollient or a color dispersant, d. from 40 to 80 wt% water, e. from 0.1 to 10 wt% of a skin benefit agent selected from a vitamin B3 compound, vitamin E compound, hyaluronic acid and mixtures thereof, f. from 0.001 to 1 wt% of a silicone, wherein, the composition is an oil-in-water emulsion.

The composition of the present invention is a leave-on composition that includes creams, lotions, serums, gels, balms. ‘Personal care compositions’ or ‘cosmetic compositions’ or ‘skin care compositions’ as used herein mean the same and may be used interchangeably.

[0018] A personal care composition as per the present invention (the composition) comprises a pigment. Preferably, the pigment is selected from Iron Oxide Red Powder (Cl 77491), Iron Oxide Yellow Powder (Cl 77492), Iron Oxide Black Powder (Cl 77499), titanium dioxide (Cl 77891) and mixtures thereof. More preferably, titanium dioxide is used as the pigment. If titanium dioxide is used then preferably, titanium dioxide so selected is an un-coated titanium dioxide. Preferably, titanium dioxide selected has average particle size in the range from 10 to 800 nanometer (nm), preferably 20 to 700 nm, preferably 50 to 600 nm, preferably 100 to 500 nm. Particle size of titanium dioxide may be measured using methods e.g. dynamic light scattering method, known in the art. Preferably, the particle size of titanium dioxide is measured using dynamic light scattering method. Such particle size assessment may be carried out using suitable particle size analyzers. Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring white color, opaque mineral that has an ability to reflect the sun's harmful rays thus providing sun protection. Secondly, the ingredient is often also used as a pigment, means when combined with other colors, titanium dioxide can instantly amplify color by providing intensity. Thirdly, it may also be used as a brightener and an opacifier means it has the ability to provide excellent coverage while brightening the skin.
[0019] The total amount of the pigment in the composition is in the range from 0.1 to 10 wt%, preferably 0.5 to 8 wt%, preferably 1 to 6 wt%, preferably 1.5 to 5 wt%, preferably 2 to 4 wt%, preferably 2.5 to 3.5 wt%.
[0020] Emulsifiers The composition comprises an emulsifier. The composition is in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion, which is achieved by suitable one or more emulsifiers. Preferably, the emulsifier is selected from emulsifiers that have hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) in the range from 3 to 20, preferably from 8 to 19, preferably from 8 to 18, preferably 8 to 15, preferably 10 to 14 and mixtures thereof. Such emulsifiers may be selected from a fatty alcohol ethoxylate, a fatty acid ethoxylate, an alkyl phenol ethoxylate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan alkyl esters and mixtures thereof.
[0021] HLB is calculated using the Griffin method wherein HLB = 20 x Mh / M wherein Mh is the molecular mass of the hydrophilic portion of the molecule and M is the molecular mass of the whole molecule, giving a result on an arbitrary scale of 0 to 20.
[0022] Examples of fatty alcohol ethoxylates that may be used as nonionic surfactants in the composition include polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (HLB= 16.9; commercially available as Brij® 35), polyoxyethylene (20) cetyl ether (HLB=16; commercially available as Brij® 58), polyethylene glycol octadecyl ether (HLB= 18.8; commercially available as Brij® 700) and Laureth -9 (C12EO9; HLB=14.3; commercially available as Brij® L9).

More preferably, the emulsifier is selected from polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Polysorbate 20), sorbitan sesquioleate, polyethylene glycol (100) stearate (PEG 100 Stearate; HLB=18.8), glyceryl stearate (HLB=3.8) Ceteth-20 (and) Cetyl Alcohol (and) Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-75 Stearate (and) Steareth-20 (Emulium® Delta MB) and mixtures thereof.
[0026] The total amount of the emulsifier in the composition is in the range from 0.1 to 15 wt%, preferably 1 to 13 wt%, preferably 2 to 11 wt%, preferably 3 to 9 wt%, preferably 4 to 7 wt%.
[0027] Optionally, the composition additionally comprises emulsion stabilizers such as magnesium aluminum silicate, potassium cetyl phosphate, PEG-10 dimethicone and mixtures thereof. If present, such emulsion stabilizers may be present in amounts from 0.01 to 5 wt%, preferably 0.1 to 4 wt%, preferably 0.5 to 2 wt%.

[0029] The composition further comprises an emollient. Preferably, the emollient is selected from alkane diols, natural or synthetic esters, and hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof.
[0030] Examples of alkane diols include 1,2-octane diol (caprylyl glycol), 2,3-octane diol, 1 ,2-nonane diol, 1,2-decane diol, 1 ,2-hexane diol, 3,4-octane diol, mixtures thereof. More preferred alkane diol is caprylyl glycol.
[0031] Another class is of ester emollients, which are alkyl esters of saturated fatty acids having 10 to 24 carbon atoms. Examples thereof include behenyl neopentanoate, isononyl isonanonoate, isopropyl myristate and octyl stearate and mixtures thereof.
[0032] Further, natural ester emollients are those based on mono-, di- and tri- glycerides. Representative glycerides include sunflower seed oil, cottonseed oil, borage oil, borage seed oil, primrose oil, castor and hydrogenated castor oils, rice bran oil, soybean oil, olive oil, safflower oil, shea butter, jojoba oil and combinations thereof.

[0036] The composition comprises from 40 to 80 wt% water, preferably 45 to 75 wt%, preferably 50 to 70 wt%, preferably 55 to 65 wt% e.g. 60 wt% water. Thus, the composition comprises water in substantial amount. The term ‘substantial amount’ in the context of water preferably means, water in amounts in the range from 40 to 80 wt% water, preferably 45 to 75 wt%, preferably 50 to 70 wt%, preferably 55 to 65 wt%.
[0037] Skin benefit agents
[0038] The composition further comprises a skin benefit agent selected from a vitamin B3 compound, vitamin E compound, hyaluronic acid and mixtures thereof.
[0039] Preferably, vitamin B3 compound is selected from niacinamide, picolinamide, isonicotinamide, n- cyclopopyl nicotinamide, n-cyclopentyl nicotinamide and mixtures thereof. More preferably, vitamin B3 compound selected is niacinamide. These benefit agents may be used as skin brightening agents in the composition. Preferably, vitamin E compound is selected form tocopheryl acetate, tocopherol phosphate and mixture thereof. More preferably, vitamin E compound selected is tocopheryl acetate. These benefit agents may be used as antioxidants in the composition. Additionally, hyaluronic acid that may be used as a benefit agent in the composition may be used as a moisturizing agent in the composition.
[0040] The total amount of the skin benefit agent in the composition is in the range from 0.1 to 10 wt%, preferably from 1 to 8 wt%, preferably from 2 to 7 wt%, preferably from 3 to 5 wt% in the composition.
[0041] The composition further comprises a silicone in an amount from 0.001 to 1 wt%, preferably from 0.01 to 0.1 wt%. The present inventors found that when the composition contained silicone in amounts more than 1 wt%, it affected the stability of the composition. It will be understood that it is the amount of free silicone, that needs to be in the range from 0.001 to 1 wt%. For example, the composition may comprise PEG-10 dimethicone, in an amount such that the methicone part, i.e. silicone, is in the range from 0.001 to 1 wt% in the composition. Format of the composition
[0042] The composition is in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion. As described hereinabove, the emulsifiers are so selected that the composition results into an oil-in-water emulsion.
[0043] The uniqueness of the composition is such that it has now been made possible to provide a pigment containing composition that also contains water in substantial amounts. As described hereinabove, most pigment containing compositions are oil-heavy, and they often provide high coverage that tends to create an obvious layer on the skin. However, consumers tend to desire for pigment containing compositions also for routine use which do not provide high coverage but still address consumer needs like covering uneven skin tone and pimples. Moreover, due to substantial amount of water that is present in the composition, it has also been possible to deliver water soluble skin benefit agents e.g. niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, through the same composition thereby addressing more of consumers’ needs.

Claims1. A personal care composition comprising: a. from 0.1 to 10 wt% of a pigment, b. from 0.1 to 15 wt% of an emulsifier, c. from 0.001 to 20 wt% of an emollient or a color dispersant, d. from 40 to 80 wt% water, e. from 0.1 to 10 wt% of a skin benefit agent selected from a vitamin B3 compound, vitamin E compound, hyaluronic acid and mixtures thereof, f. from 0.001 to 1 wt% of a silicone, wherein, the composition is an oil-in-water emulsion.
2. The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pigment is selected from red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, black iron oxide, titanium dioxide and mixtures thereof.
3. The composition as claimed in claim 2 wherein the pigment selected is titanium oxide.
4. The composition as claimed in claim 3 wherein the titanium dioxide is un-coated titanium oxide having average particle size in the range from 10 to 800 nanometer.
5. The composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the composition further comprises from 0.001 to 20 wt% a humectant selected from glycerol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, propanediol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol, sorbitol and mixtures thereof.
6. The composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the composition further comprises a viscosity modifying polymer.
7. The composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the viscosity of the composition is in the range from 2500 to 8500 mPa s at 25 ± 2°C.
8. The composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the composition is a nonsolid composition in leave-on form.
