Description

METHOD OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION RELATED INFORMATION DELIVERY AND RELATED DEVICESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to communication technologies, and more particularly, to a method of energy consumption related information delivery and related devices.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] With the arrival of 5th-generation (5G) communication systems, a huge increase in the number of connected devices is expected. These connected devices, like cars, robots, drones, home gadgets, screens, and smart sensors, will mostly connect to networks. Even things like factory equipments will likely join in. To handle the huge number of devices, considerable efforts are being dedicated to enhancing the 5G communication systems, or even future 6th-generation (6G) communication systems.

[0003] Saving energy in cellular networks is very important because it reduces their impact on the environment as the demand for mobile data grows. Energy saving on these networks also helps reduce operational costs. It's crucial for both money-saving and environmental reasons to focus on energy efficiency in these networks.

[0004] There is an ongoing study in 3GPP Rel-19 “Study on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving” . Under this study different solutions are proposed to improve energy efficiency, for example, by gathering energy saving parameters, creating corresponding energy consumption information (e.g. how much energy has been consumed and / or how much carbon emission has been produced) which may include analytics and exposing them e.g. to Policy Control Function (PCF) or Application Function (AF) of Core Network (CN) for making more energy efficient mechanisms for the networks.

[0005] One of the solutions proposed in the study is to enable the network to expose more energy-related information to authorized consumers, facilitating the configuration of application layers or third-party systems for enhancing network energy saving and efficiency. Specifically, the third-party server subscribes to energy consumption related information, including energy efficiency related information, renewable energy, carbon emission related data, and etc., by sending a request to Network Exposure Function (NEF) . The NEF authorizes the request from the third-party server and subsequently, the NEF requests network energy related information analyzed from Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) . The NWDAF may interact with Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) to gather necessary information to derive new analytics that can be used to configure application behavior. Once the analytics are derived, the NWDAF sends a response or notification back to the NEF, which then notifies the third-party server via control plane. The third-party server receives the notification for application layer network energy saving configurations for one or multiple UEs.

[0006] The energy consumption related information may influence charging decisions since the user or subscriber may sacrifice the quality of service to save resources for the operator. However, how to deliver  such information and how such information is used for the charging have not been yet addressed. Therefore, there is a need to develop a mechanism for the implementation.SUMMARY

[0040] One network device and two terminals are exemplarily shown in FIG. 1. Optionally, the communication system 100 may include multiple network devices, and there may be included another number of terminals in coverage of each network device. No limits are made thereto in the embodiments of the disclosure.

[0041] The communication system 100 may further include another network entity, such as a network controller and a mobility management entity. No limits are made thereto in the embodiments of the disclosure.

[0042] FIG. 2 shows a 5G architecture. Devices involved in the 5G architecture include UE, a Radio Access Network (RAN) , a User Plane Function (UPF) , a Data Network (DN) , an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , a Session Management Function (SMF) , a Policy Control Function (PCF) , an Application Function (AF) , an Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , and Unified Data Management (UDM) .

[0043] As shown in FIG. 2, policy related network elements mainly include the PCF, the AMF, the SMF, the RAN, and the UE. The PCF determines policy rules for network behaviors. This may include deciding how network resources are allocated, ensuring efficiency of network capabilities. PCF may also integrate with charging systems to apply billing and charging rules based on policy decisions, ensuring that users are billed correctly for the services they use. The SMF is mainly responsible for executing session related policies. The AMF is mainly responsible for executing access and UE policy related policies. Policy transmission and update of the two network elements (the AMF and the SMF) are managed and controlled by the PCF.

[0044] Specific to a UE policy, information about the UE policy, including a content of the UE policy, an Identifier (ID) of the UE policy, etc., is monitored between the PCF and the UE through a container. In an uplink direction, the container is sent to the AMF by the UE through a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message, and continues to be transparently transmitted (without perception or modification) to the PCF by the AMF. Reversely, in a downlink direction, the container is sent to the AMF by the PCF, and is further transparently transmitted to the UE by the AMF through a NAS message.

[0045] When a feature is introduced into cellular system (e.g., 5GC) , Service Providers are looking for a way to monetize it. Service monetization is typically based on the reports received by a Charging Function (CHF) from Core Network (CN) of the cellular system. The present application proposes standardization mechanisms which would enable monetization strategy based on energy consumption. It should be noted that monetization strategy is not necessarily about the corresponding direct billing. It may also be about gathered network statistics etc., for example, depending on the granularity of energy consumption information, e.g. per service and / or per slice level and / or per UE and / or per group of UEs.

[0046] The proposed solution introduces new reporting parameters, provided from Network Exposure Function (NEF) to CHF in the charging request, related to energy consumption reporting. The energy consumption can be reported on e.g. NF level and / or network slice level and / or service level and / or UE level and / or group of UEs level. This allows the CHF to be aware of the corresponding energy consumption to support billing, credit control, statistics etc. in the Billing Domain (BD) (e.g. the billing system or a mediation device) for the purposes of appropriate engagement between the Service Provider and e.g. the provider of the corresponding service or slice or group charging a corresponding user or group of users etc.

[0047] FIG. 3 is a flowchart of a method 300 of energy consumption related information delivery according to an embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 3, the method 300 may be performed by a network entity (e.g., Network Exposure Function (NEF) ) and includes the following steps.

[0048] In Step 310, the NEF obtains energy consumption related information.

[0049] The energy consumption related information may include energy efficiency related information, renewable energy, and / or carbon emission related data, but is not limited thereto. The energy consumption related information may be included in charging request sent to the CHF for the CHF to perform charging estimation based on the energy consumption related information. For example, the more the energy consumed by a User Equipment (UE) or a group of UEs, the more the UE or group of UEs will be charged. In another exemplary case, the more the energy saved, the less a subscriber will be charged.

[0050] The energy consumption related information may be obtained upon a request from Application Function (AP) or a third-party server, which subscribes to the energy consumption related information. The NEF may authorize the request from the third-party server and subsequently, request the energy consumption related information analyzed from Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) , which may interact with Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) to gather necessary information to derive the energy consumption related information. The energy consumption related information obtained by the NEF may be provided to the AF or the third-party server for the AF or the third-party server to configure application configurations for one or multiple UEs in order to facilitate network energy saving.

[0051] In Step 320, the NEF includes the energy consumption related information into Application Program Interface (API) content.

[0052] Referring to FIG. 4, the NEF communicates with the CHF such that the energy consumption related information is provided from the NEF to the CHF for the CHF to perform charging estimation based on the energy consumption related information. The communication between the NEF and the CHF may be carried  out via an API. The API can deliver the API content including the energy consumption related information. The energy consumption related information may be stored as a parameter of the API content.

[0053] For example, the API is called a NEF API which can transfer NEF API Charging Information. The NEF API Charging Information can provide Network Exposure Function API specific charging information and particularly include the energy consumption related information. The detailed structure of the NEF API Charging Information can be found in Table 1 below.

[0054] Table 1

[0055] As shown in Table 1, the energy consumption related information (e.g. energy consumption information) , as a parameter, is included in the API content, and the energy consumption related information may be a part of Energy Consumption charging related information, which included in the API content and serves as an Information Element of the NEF API Charging Information.

[0056] In Step 330, the NEF reports the API content including the energy consumption related information to the CHF via the API for the CHF to perform charging estimation.

[0057] The energy consumption related information may be reported based on Network Function (NF) level, and / or network slice level, and / or service level, and / or User Equipment (UE) level, and / or group of UEs level. That is, the granularity of the energy consumption related information may be NF level, network slice level, service level, UE level or group of UEs level.

[0058] In some embodiments, in the reporting step (i.e., Step 330) , the reporting of the energy consumption related information is triggered by a triggering event. The triggering events, based on which, for example, the charging reporting is re-initiated by the core network (5GC) in the direction of CHF, may be referred to 3GPP TS 32.290 (which defines services, operations and procedures of charging using Service Based Interface (SBI) ) . The list of the triggering events may need to be extended in order to support Artificial Intelligence (AI)  / Machine Learning (ML) charging reporting operation. Applicable triggers or triggering events in the NEF may also be referred to those defined in the 3GPP TS 32.254, clause 5.4.1.2.

[0059] In some embodiments, in the reporting step (i.e., Step 330) , the reporting of the energy consumption related information is for converged charging reporting. According to 3GPP TS 32.254, a northbound API is applicable for the NEF-AF communication. The NEF may be able to perform convergent charging by interacting with the CHF, for charging data related to Northbound API access, in order to provide the data required for the management activities outlined in 3GPP TS 32.240 (credit-control, accounting, billing, statistics etc. ) . The northbound APIs supported by the NEF are covered for converged charging reporting. Thus, the addition of Consolidated Data Rate monitoring for a list of UEs, introduced for a purpose of e.g. AI / ML Federated Learning operation, would be supported.

[0060] It is noted that 3GPP TS 32.254 (which defines exposure function northbound Application Program Interfaces (APIs) charging) would need to be extended to include the NEF charging reporting for the proposed parameters (i.e., the energy consumption related information) related to energy saving exposure operation when applying the technical scheme (s) of this application to extend 5GC NEF’s network exposure function.

[0061] It is also noted that Charging Data Request and Charging Data Response are exchanged between the NEF and the CHF. The Charging Data Request is issued by the NEF towards the CHF when certain  conditions (chargeable events) are met. The NEF converged charging messages (i.e. Charging Data Request and Charging Data Response) may remain unchanged as defined in 3GPP TS 32.254, clause 6.2a. 1.1 when applying the technical scheme (s) of this application, that is, reporting of the energy consumption related information. The Charging Data Request and Charging Data Response messages structure may also remain unchanged as defined in 3GPP TS 32.254, clauses 6.2a. 1.2.1 and 6.2a. 1.2.2.

[0062] FIG. 5 is a flowchart of a method 500 of energy consumption related information delivery according to an embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 5, the method 500 is performed by a network entity (e.g., Charging Function (CHF) ) and includes the following steps.

[0063] In Step 510, the CHF obtains Application Program Interface (API) content including energy consumption related information via an API from Network Exposure Function (NEF) .

[0064] The energy consumption related information may include energy efficiency related information, renewable energy, and / or carbon emission related data, but is not limited thereto. It is noted that the energy consumption related information may be included in charging request sent from the NEF to the CHF such that the CHF can perform charging estimation based on the energy consumption related information. For example, the more the energy consumed by a User Equipment (UE) or a group of UEs, the more the UE or group of UEs will be charged. In another exemplary case, the more the energy saved, the less a subscriber will be charged.

[0065] Referring to FIG. 4, the CHF communicates with the NEF such that the energy consumption related information is provided from the NEF to the CHF. The communication between the NEF and the CHF may be carried out via an API (e.g., a NEF API which can transfer NEF API Charging Information, as described above) . The API can deliver the API content including the energy consumption related information. The energy consumption related information may be stored as a parameter of the API content. The NEF API Charging Information can include the energy consumption related information carried by an Information Element (i.e., the Energy Consumption charging related information) , as shown in Table 1 above.

[0066] In Step 520, the CHF extracts the energy consumption related information from the API content.

[0067] For the exemplary case illustrated above, the CHF may obtain the API content from the NEF API Charging Information, extract the Energy Consumption charging related information from the API content to obtain the energy consumption related information included in the Energy Consumption charging related information. The extraction of the energy consumption related information may be done based on the format of the API content described by an Information Element called API Reference. The granularity of the energy consumption related information is Network Function (NF) level, network slice level, service level, User Equipment (UE) level and group of UEs level.

[0068] In Step 530, the CHF performs charging estimation based on the extracted energy consumption related information.

[0069] In this step, based on the energy consumption related information extracted in Step 520, charging estimation is performed by the CHF. The CHF may estimate how much to be charged based on how much energy has been consumed and / or how much carbon emission has been produced, which can be known  from the energy consumption related information. The charging estimation may be based on the granularity of the energy consumption related information described above.

[0070] In some embodiments, in the charging estimation performing step (i.e., Step 530) , the charging estimation is triggered by a triggering event. In some embodiments, in the charging estimation performing step (i.e., Step 530) , the charging estimation is for converged charging. The afore-mentioned triggering event and converged charging may be referred to Step 330 described above, details of which are not repeated herein for the sake of simplicity.

[0071] This application addresses the deficiency by defining how the energy consumption related information is transferred to the CHF so that charging function can act correspondingly. With the above-described methods, charging estimation can be implemented based on energy consumption.

[0072] The various specific technical features described in the above embodiments can be combined in any suitable manner without contradiction. To avoid unnecessary repetition, various possible combinations are not detailed herein.

[0073] The different embodiments of the present application can also be combined arbitrarily, as long as it does not violate the idea of the present application, and should also be regarded as the content disclosed in this application.

[0074] It should be noted, in the various method embodiments of the present application, the sequence numbers of the foregoing process steps do not mean the order of execution. The execution order of each process should be determined by its function and internal logic and should not constitute any limitation to the implementation of the present application.

[0075] Referring to FIG. 6, some embodiments of the present application further provide a first network entity 60, which includes at least one memory 62 configured to store program instructions; and at least one processor 61 configured to execute the program instructions, which cause the at least one processor 61 to obtain energy consumption related information; include the energy consumption related information into Application Program Interface (API) content; and report the API content including the energy consumption related information to Charging Function (CHF) via an API for the CHF to perform charging estimation. The NEF may communicate with the CHF such that the energy consumption related information is provided from the NEF to the CHF for the CHF to perform charging estimation based on the energy consumption related information. The communication between the NEF and the CHF may be carried out via an API. The API can deliver the API content including the energy consumption related information. The energy consumption related information may be stored as a parameter of the API content. The energy consumption related information may be referred to Table 1 above. The energy consumption related information may be reported based on Network Function (NF) level, and / or network slice level, and / or service level, and / or User Equipment (UE) level, and / or group of UEs level. The first network entity 60 may be implemented by Network Exposure Function (NEF) of Core Network (CN) in 5GC. The details of operations of such network entity 60 may be referred to the afore-described method 300 of energy consumption related information delivery, which is not repeated herein for the sake of simplicity.

[0076] Referring to FIG. 7, some embodiments of the present application further provide a second network entity 70, which includes at least one memory 72 configured to store program instructions; and at least one processor 71 configured to execute the program instructions, which cause the at least one processor 71 to obtain Application Program Interface (API) content including energy consumption related information via an API from Network Exposure Function (NEF) ; extract the energy consumption related information from the API content; and perform charging estimation based on the extracted energy consumption related information. The second network entity 70 may be implemented by a Charging Function (CHF) of Core Network (CN) in 5GC. The CHF may communicate with the NEF such that the energy consumption related information is provided from the NEF to the CHF. The communication between the NEF and the CHF may be carried out via an API (e.g., a NEF API which can transfer NEF API Charging Information, as described above) . The API can deliver the API content including the energy consumption related information. The energy consumption related information may be stored as a parameter of the API content. The energy consumption related information may be referred to Table 1 above. The granularity of the energy consumption related information may be NF level, network slice level, service level, UE level or group of UEs level. The details of operations of such network entity 70 may be referred to the afore-described method 500 of energy consumption related information delivery, which is not repeated herein for the sake of simplicity.
