[0037] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as ‘best, ’ ‘lowest, ’ ‘highest, ’ ‘minimum, ’ ‘maximum, ’ or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0038] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0039] As used herein, the term “protocol data unit (PDU) ” may refer to a unit of data that carries information. The term “PDU set” used herein may refer to one or more PDUs carrying the payload of one unit of information generated at the application level (e.g. frame (s) or video slice (s) for extended reality (XR) Services) . The term “report for RLC SN gap” used herein may refer to information that is used for the RLC entity to report RLC SN gap information, or packet discarding information, or RLC SDU discarding information, or time out information of a discarding timer associated with SDU / PDU associated to the peer RLC entity. In some embodiments, the discarding of SDU / PDU is due to the remaining time of SDU / PDU being 0 or an expiration of packet delay budget (PDB) or discard timer. The discarded RLC SDUs can also be described as absolute SDUs. The report for RLC SN gap can be RLC SN gap PDU. Terms “report for RLC SN gap” and “RLC SN gap report” may be used interchangeably.

[0040] As mentioned above, it is assumed that XR services have strict latency requirements. Since any data which has exceeded the packet delay budget (PDB)  / PDU set delay budget (PSDB) may not be useful, it needs to avoid sending these useless data to save the radio resources. RLC AM is typically used for services which require no packet loss but without stringent latency requirement. the characteristics of RLC AM is not negligible for typical XR services which have strict latency requirements and certain reliability requirements. Thus, RLC re-transmission related enhancements for the RLC Acknowledged Mode (AM) with small packet delay budget is worth studying.

[0041] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures. It is noted that embodiments described with reference to the drawings can be applicable to any suitable scenario. For example, the embodiments can be applied in the scenario of XR services. In some embodiments, data, packet, PDU, RLC SDU, RLC PDU, packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) SDU, or PDCP PDU can be alternative examples of the present disclosure and can be used interchangeably. In some embodiments, delay budget, packet delay budget, remaining delay budget, discard timer, or remaining time can be alternative examples of the present disclosure and can be used interchangeably. In some embodiments, “data becomes delay-critical data” and “there is delay-critical data” can be alternative examples of the present disclosure and can be used interchangeably.

[0042] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication  environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100, a plurality of communication devices, including a terminal device 110 and a network device 120, can communicate with each other.

[0043] In the example of FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may be a UE and the network device 120 may be a base station serving the UE. The serving area of the network device 120 may be called a cell 102.

[0044] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the network device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the terminal device 110 may be other device than a terminal device.

[0045] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the terminal device 110 operating as a UE and the network device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0046] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is a terminal device and the network device 120 is a network device, a link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0047] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced  (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0048] Reference is made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow involves the first device 210 and the second device 220. In some embodiments, the first device 210 may be the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1 and the second device 220 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1. In some other embodiments, the first device 210 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1 and the second device 220 may be the terminal device 110. Alternatively, the first device 210 may be an RLC entity at transmitting side and the second device 220 may be an RLC entity at receiving side.

[0049] The first device 210 determines (2010) that a report for RLC SN gap is triggered based on at least one condition (referred to as “first condition” hereinafter) is satisfied. In this way, it can avoid RLC window stalling due to the discarding ofRLC SDU by reporting the RLC SN gap. In some embodiments, the first condition may include that an RLC service data unit (SDU) is discarded. For example, the first condition may include that the one or more RLC SDUs are discarded. As another example, the first condition may include that at least one RLC SDU is discarded. Alternatively, or in addition, the first condition may include that a retransmission of the RLC SDU is stopped. In some embodiments, the RLC SDU discard may include the discard timer expires for RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the RLC SDU discard may include that an upper layer (e.g., packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) ) indicates the RLC layer to discard a particular RLC SDU. For example, if a timer (such as, a discard timer or a discard timer for low importance) expires for a PDCP SDU, a transmitting PDCP entity may discard PDCP SDU (s) along with the corresponding PDCP Data PDU (s) . In some embodiments, if the corresponding PDCP data PDU has already been submitted / delivered to lower layers, the discard of the RLC SDU may be indicated to lower layers (for example, RLC) . In some other  embodiments, when the upper layer (e.g., PDCP) indicates to discard a particular RLC SDU, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity or the transmitting unacknowledged mode (UM) RLC entity may discard the indicated RLC SDU, if neither the RLC SDU nor a segment thereof has been submitted to the lower layers.

[0050] In some embodiments, the first condition may include that the one or more RLC SDUs are already associated with an SN value. In some other embodiments, the first condition may include that the discarded RLC SDU has not been transmitted to a lower layer. Alternatively, or in addition, the first condition may include that the discarded RLC SDU has been transmitted to the lower layer but is not acknowledged. For example, the acknowledgment may be from the network device to the terminal device or may be from MAC layer to RLC layer. In some embodiments, the RLC SN gap report is not triggered when the discard timer expires for the most recent RLC SDU after it has been submitted to the lower layers but is not acknowledged.

[0051] In some further embodiments, the first condition may include that there is at least one stored RLC SDU associated with an SN value that is not smaller than an SN value associated with a discarded RLC SDU. That is, the first condition may include that there is at least one stored RLC SDU associated with an SN value that is larger than or equal to an SN value associated with a discarded RLC SDU.

[0052] In some embodiments, the report for RLC SN gap may include one or more of: a first field indicating whether a RLC protocol data unit (PDU) is an RLC data PDU or RLC control PDU, a second field indicating a type of the RLC control PDU, a third field indicating an SN value of a first discarded RLC SDU, or a discard bitmap field indicating which SDU is discarded or which SDU is not discarded. In some example embodiments, the first field may be a data / control (D / C) field. The second field indicating that the type of the RLC control PDU is STATUS PDU or RLC SN gap PDU, for example, one value of second field indicating the RLC PDU is RLC SN gap PDU. The third field may be first discard SN (FDS) field indicating the SN value of the first discarded RLC SDU. In some example embodiments, the discard bitmap field indicates which SDUs are discarded or which SDUs are not discarded in the transmitting RLC entity. The length of the discard bitmap field may be a variable length, for example, it can be 0. The bit position of the Nth bit in the Discard Bitmap is N, i.e., the bit position of the first bit in the Discard Bitmap is 1.

[0053] FIG. 3A illustrates a schematic diagram of RLC SN gap PDU format with 12-bit SN and FIG. 3B illustrates a schematic diagram of RLC SN gap PDU format with 18-bit SN. The R bit means the reserve bit. It is noted that formats shown in FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B are only examples not limitations. As shown in FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B, the data / control (D / C) field 310 may indicate whether the RLC PDU is an RLC data PDU or RLC control PDU. The D / C field may be 1 bit. In some embodiments, value 0 refer to control PDU, 1 refer to data PDU. In some other embodiments, value 0 refer to data PDU, 1 refer to control PDU. The control PDU type (CPT) field 320 may indicate the type of the RLC control PDU. In some embodiments, this field is 3 bits. One new value indicate the control PDU is RLC SN gap PDU. Table 1 shows example values of the CPT field 320.

[0054] Table I

[0055] In some embodiments, the first discard SN (FDS) field 330 may indicate the SN value of the first discarded RLC SDU. In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 3A, the FDS field 330 may include 12 bits. Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 3B, the FDS field 330 may include 18 bits.

[0056] In some other embodiments, the report for RLC SN gap may include the discard bitmap field 340. The length of the discard bitmap field 340 may be variable. The length of the discard bitmap field 340 can be 0. This discard bitmap field 340 may indicate which SDUs are discarded or which SDUs are not discarded in the transmitting PDCP entity / first device 210. The bit position of the Nth bit in the discard bitmap is N i.e., the bit position of the first bit in the Discard Bitmap is 1. In some embodiments, the discard or not discard information of the RLC SDU with SN can be determined by bit position and FDS. For example, for 12bit RLC SN, the value 0 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN = (FDS + bit position) modulo 212 is not discarded, value 1 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN = (FDS + bit position) modulo 212 is discarded.In another example, the  value 1 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN = (FDS + bit position) modulo 212 is not discarded, value 0 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN= (FDS + bit position) modulo 212 is discarded. For example, for 18bit RLC SN, the value 0 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN= (FDS + bit position) modulo 218 is not discarded, value 1 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN = (FDS + bit position) modulo 218 is discarded. In another example, the value 1 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN= (FDS + bit position) modulo 218 is not discarded, value 0 of the bit indicate that the RLC SDU with SN= (FDS + bit position) modulo 218 is discarded. Table 2-1 or Table 2-2 shows example values of the discard bitmap field 340. Table 3-1 or Table 3-2 shows other example values of the discard bitmap field 340.

[0061] In some other embodiments, the report for RLC SN gap may include one or more of: a fourth field indicating an SN of the RLC SDU that has been discarded or an  expiration of packet delay budget (PDB) or RLC SDU discard due to expiration of discard timer, a fifth field indicating the number of consecutively discarded RLC SDUs staring from the RLC SDU, a sixth field indicating whether or not a set of discarded RLC SDUs follows, a seventh field indicating whether or not information regarding a continuous sequence of RLC SDUs that have been discarded, or an eighth field indicating a SN of a next not discarded RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the fourth field indicating the SN of the RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment that has been discarded (for example, due to the expiration of discard timer) . In some embodiments, the fifth field indicating the number of consecutively discarded RLC SDUs staring from and including the RLC SDU indicated by fourth field. In some embodiments, the sixth field indicates whether or not a set of fourth field, sixth field and seventh field follows. For example, value 1 means a set of fourth field, sixth field and seventh field follows. In some embodiments, the seventh field indicates whether or not information about a continuous sequence of RLC SDUs that have been discarded. For example, value 1 means discard range field follows for RLC SDU indicated by fourth field.

[0062] In some embodiments, in addition, the report for RLC SN may also include the indicate whether the RLC PDU is an RLC data PDU or RLC control PDU, and the field indicate the type of the RLC control PDU.

[0063] FIG. 4A illustrates a schematic diagram of RLC SN gap PDU format with 12-bit SN and FIG. 4B illustrates a schematic diagram of RLC SN gap PDU format with 18-bit SN. The R bit means the reserve bit. As shown in FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B, the D / C field 410 may indicate whether the RLC PDU is an RLC data PDU or RLC control PDU. In some embodiments, value 0 refer to control PDU, 1 refer to data PDU. In some other embodiments, value 0 refer to data PDU, 1 refer to control PDU. The CPT field 420 may indicate the type of the RLC control PDU. In some embodiments, this field is 3 bits. One new value indicate the control PDU is RLC SN gap PDU. Examples are shown in Table 1.

[0064] In some embodiments, the fourth field may be, for example, marked by discard_SN. The discard_SN field 430 may indicate the SN of the RLC SDU (or RLC SDU segment) that has been discarded or PDB expire. In some example embodiments, the sixth field may be marked as D1 field. The D1 field 440 may indicate whether or not a set of Discard_SN, D1, D2 follows. Value 1 means a set of Discard_SN, D1, D2 follows. In  some example embodiments, the seventh field may be marked as D2 field. The D2 field 450 may indicate whether or not information about a continuous sequence of RLC SDUs that have been discarded. Value 1 means discard range field follows for this Discard_SN. In some example embodiments, the fifth field may be marked as discard range field. The discard range field 460 may indicate the number of consecutively discard RLC SDUs starting from and including discard_SN. In some embodiments, the report for RLC SN gap may include a not discard SN field which may indicate the SN of the next not discarded RLC SDU. In other words, this field may indicate the next SN of the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU. When the second device 220 receives a RLC SN gap PDU, it interprets that all RLC SDUs up to but not including the RLC SDU with SN = Not_discard_SN not have been discarded by its peer AM RLC entity, excluding those RLC SDUs indicated in the RLC SN gap PDU with discard_SN.

[0065] The first device 210 transmits (2020) the report for RLC SN gap to the second device 220. That is, the second device 220 receives (2020) the report for RLC SN gap from the first device 210. In this way, it can specify the RLC SN gap report trigger, content, behavior on transmitting side and receiving side RLC entity.

[0066] In some embodiments, a new retransmission timer (also referred to as “first timer” ) used by the first device 210 may be introduced, in order to retransmit the report for RLC SN gap. For example, the first device 210 may start or restart the retransmission timer after delivering the report for RLC SN gap to a layer that is lower than RLC, or the first device 210 may start or restart the retransmission timer after delivering the RLC SN gap PDU to lower layer. For example, the layer that is lower than RLC or lower layer may be a medium access control (MAC) layer or a physical (PHY) layer. In some embodiments, upon submission of the report for RLC SN gap to the lower layer, the first device 210 may set a first state variable (such as, discard_ACK SN) to the highest SN of the report for RLC SN gap. In some embodiments, upon submission of the report for RLC SN gap to the lower layer, if the retransmission timer is not running, the first device 210 may start the retransmission timer; if the retransmission timer is running, the first device 210 may restart the retransmission timer. In this way, it can guarantee the RLC SN gap information can timely report to peer network device. It can avoid the RLC window stalling. In addition, it can avoid the unnecessary RLC retransmission.

[0067] Alternatively, or in addition, the first device 210 may retransmit the report for  RLC SN gap to the second device 220, after an expiration of the retransmission timer. Alternatively, after the expiration of the retransmission timer, the first device 210 may trigger a report for RLC SN gap. In this way, it can guarantee the RLC SN gap information can timely report to peer network device. It can avoid the RLC window stalling. In addition, it can avoid the unnecessary RLC retransmission.

[0068] In some embodiments, the second device 220 may transmit (2030) feedback regarding the report for RLC SN gap to the first device 210. That is, the first device 210 may receive (2030) the feedback regarding the report for RLC SN gap from the second device 220. In some embodiments, after the reception of feedback indicate that the report for RLC SN gap is received, the first device 210 may stop and / or reset the retransmission timer if the retransmission is running. In some embodiments, the feedback may be a feedback MAC CE. In some embodiments, the feedback may be a feedback report regarding the report for RLC SN gap. For example, the feedback report may be a RLC control PDU. Alternatively, or in addition, the feedback may be an RLC status report. In some embodiments, after the reception of the feedback report or the RLC status report, the first device 210 may stop and / or reset the retransmission timer, if the retransmission is running. In some embodiments, the feedback report or the RLC status report including the feedback information for RLC SDU with the SN reported in report for RLC SN gap. In some embodiments, after the reception of the feedback report or the RLC status report including the feedback related to the RLC SDU with the SN reported in report for RLC SN gap, the first device 210 may stop and / or reset the retransmission timer. In some embodiments, after the reception of the feedback report or the RLC status report including the feedback related to the at least one of RLC SDU with the SN reported in report for RLC SN gap, the first device 210 may stop and / or reset the retransmission timer. For example, if the status report or the feedback report includes feedback (e.g., positive or negative acknowledgement) for the RLC SDU with sequence number equal to first state variable value or if the status report, or if status report or feedback report includes the feedback (e.g., positive or negative ack) for all RLC SDU with SN indicated in RLC SN gap report, or if the status report or feedback report includes the feedback (e.g., positive or negative ack) for any or part of RLC SDU with SN indicated in RLC SN gap report, the first device 210 may stop and / or reset the retransmission timer.

[0069] In some embodiments, a new RLC SN gap feedback report is introduced. The second device 220 may send feedback report / PDU to its peer device (i.e., the first device  210) in order to provide feedback (e.g., positive and / or negative ack) of RLC SDUs reported in RLC SN gap report. In some embodiments, the feedback report may include feedback for RLC SDU with an SN indicated in the report for RLC SN gap. For example, the feedback report may only include the feedback for RLC SDU with the SN indicated in RLC SN gap report. Alternatively, the feedback report may include the feedback for the RLC SDU with the SN indicated in the report for RLC SN gap and the RLC SDU with an SN that has been successfully received or not successfully received. The feedback report may include the feedback for the RLC SDU with the SN indicated in the report for RLC SN gap, and the status report may include the feedback for the RLC SDU with an SN that has been successfully received or not successfully received.

[0070] In some embodiments, the RLC status report may include feedback for RLC SDU with an SN indicated in the report for RLC SN gap. In some other embodiments, the RLC status report comprises feedback for RLC SDU except the RLC SDU with the SN indicated in RLC SN gap report. In some embodiments, the RLC status report comprises feedback for RLC SDU including the RLC SDU with an SN indicated in the report for RLC SN gap and RLC SDU detected by the second network device but not indicated discard in report for RLC SN gap. In some embodiments, the RLC status report may include the indication indicate whether the ACK feedback for RLC SDU with SN is due to the normal ACK or ACK due to the SN gap report / discard. Alternatively, the RLC status report may include the indication indicate whether the NACK feedback is due to the normal NACK or NACK due to the SN gap report / discard.

[0071] In some embodiments, both the new feedback report and the RLC status report may be transmitted. For example, the new feedback report may include the feedback for RLC SDU with the SN indicated in RLC SN gap report and the RLC status report may include the feedback for RLC SDU except the RLC SDU with the SN indicated in RLC SN gap report. In some embodiments, the first device 210 may slide the window and / or update the TX states variables based on the feedback report and the status report. In this way, it can avoid the RLC window stalling.

[0072] In some embodiments, if the report for RLC SN gap is triggered or when constructing a RLC SN gap report PDU, the first device 210 may compile a RLC SN gap report.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the first device 210 may set the FDS field to the  first discard SN. In other words, the first device 210 may set the FDS field to the smallest SN value among the SN values associated with the discarded RLC SDU (s) . For example, the FDS field 330 in FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B may be set to the first discard SN. In some embodiments, if more than one RLC SDUs are discarded, the first device 210 may allocate a discard bitmap field of length in bits equal to the number of SN values from and not including the first discarded RLC SDU up to and including the last discarded RLC SDU, rounded up to the next multiple of 8, or up to and including a RLC SDU for which the resulting RLC Control PDU size still fits to the total size of RLC PDU (s) indicated by lower layer, whichever comes first. For example, as shown in FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B, to the bit length of the discard bitmap field 340 may be set to equal to the number of SN values from and not including the first discarded RLC SDU up to and including the last discarded RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the first device 210 may set in the discard bitmap field 340 as ‘0’ for all RLC SDUs that have not been discarded and set in the discard bitmap field 340 as ‘1’ for all RLC SDUs that have been discarded. Alternatively, the first device 210 may set in the discard bitmap field 340 as ‘1’ for all RLC SDUs that have not been discarded and set in the discard bitmap field 340 as ‘0’ for all RLC SDUs that have been discarded. The first device 210 may submit the report for RLC SN gap to lower layers.

[0074] At reception of the report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 210 may consider each RLC SDU with a bit in the discard bitmap set to a predetermined number or with an associated SN value equal to the SN value in the third field as discarded. For example, the second device 210 may consider each RLC SDU, if any, with the bit in the discard bitmap set to ‘1’ , or with the associated SN value equal to the value of FDS field 330 as discarded.

[0075] In some embodiments, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, if a variable indicates a value of SN following an SN of RLC SDU with a highest SN among received RLC SDUs is less than or equal to a largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs, the second device 210 may update the variable to the largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs plus one. Alternatively, at reception of a report for report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 210 may update the variable to a maximum value between the largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs plus one and the variable, where the variable holds the value of the SN following the SN of the RLC SDU with the highest SN among received RLC SDUs. For  example, the variable is RX_Next_highest, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, if RX_Next_Highest is less than or equal to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDUs, the second device 210 may update RX_Next_Highest to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU + 1; or at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 210 may update the RX_Next_Highest to max (max discarded RLC SDU SN + 1, RX_Next_Highest) . The variable “RX_Next_Highest” is the highest received state variable, this state variable holds the value of the SN following the SN of the RLC SDU with the highest SN among received RLC SDUs. It is initially set to 0.

[0076] Alternatively, in some embodiments, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, if RX_Next is less than or equal to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU (s) , the second device 210 may update RX_Next to the SN of the first RLC SDU with SN > current RX_Next for which not all bytes have been received and not considered / indicated as discarded. The variable “RX_Next” is receive statevariable, this state variable holds the value of the SN following the last in-sequence completely received RLC SDU, and it serves as the lower edge of the receiving window. It is initially set to 0, and is updated whenever the AM RLC entity receives an RLC SDU with SN = RX_Next. In some embodiments, iftimer t-Reassembly is not running (includes the case t-Reassembly is stopped due to actions above) , if RX_Next_Highest> RX_Next +1, or if RX_Next_Highest= RX_Next + 1 and there is at least one missing byte segment of the SDU associated with SN = RX_Next before the last byte of all received segments of this SDU, perform at least one of: start timer t-Reassembly, set RX_Next_Status_Trigger to RX_Next_Highest. The timer t-Reassembly is used by the receiving side of an AM RLC entity and receiving UM RLC entity in order to detect loss of RLC PDUs at lower layer.

[0077] In some embodiments, if a RLC SN gap report is triggered or when constructing a RLC SN gap report PDU, the first device 210 may compile the report for RLC SN gap. For example, for an RLC SDU for which have been discard, the first device 210 may include in the RLC SN gap report a discard_SN which is set to the SN of the RLC SDU. Alternatively, or in addition, for a continuous sequence of RLC SDUs that have been discard, the first device 210 may include in the RLC SN gap report a set of discard_SN and discard range. In some other embodiments, the first device 210 may include and set the ACK_SN to the SN of the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU  in the RLC SN gap PDU.

[0078] At reception of the report for RLC SN gap report from lower layers, the second device 220 may consider each RLC SDU indicated in the fourth field (for example, the discard_SN field 430) or the fifth field (for example, the discard range field 460) as discarded. Alternatively, or in addition, the second device 220 may consider all RLC SDUs up to but not including a RLC SDU indicated in the eighth field as not discarded, excluding RLC SDUs indicated in the fourth or fifth field. For example, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 220 may consider each RLC SDU, if any, indicated by the discard_SN, or consecutively RLC SDUs indicated by discard_SN range as discarded; or consider all RLC SDUs up to but not including the RLC SDU with SN = Not_discard_SN as not discarded by its peer AM RLC entity, excluding those RLC SDUs indicated in the RLC SN gap PDU with discard_SN or discard SN range.

[0079] In some embodiments, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, if a variable indicates a value of SN following an SN of RLC SDU with a highest SN among received RLC SDUs is less than or equal to a largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs, the second device 220 may update the variable to the largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs plus one. Alternatively, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 220 may update the variable to a maximum value between the largest SN value associated with discarded RLC SDUs plus one and the variable. For example, if RX_Next_Highest is less than or equal to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDUs, the second device 220 may update RX_Next_Highest to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU + 1. For another example, at reception of a report for RLC SN gap from lower layers, the second device 220 may update the RX_Next_Highest to max (max discarded RLC SDU SN + 1, RX_Next_Highest) . Alternatively, ifRX_Next is less than or equal to the largest SN value associated with the discarded RLC SDU (s) , the second device 220 may update RX_Next to the SN of the first RLC SDU with SN > current RX_Next for which not allbytes have been received and not considered / indicated as discarded. In some embodiments, if timer t-Reassembly is not running (includes the case t-Reassembly is stopped due to actions above) , if RX_Next_Highest> RX_Next +1, or if RX_Next_Highest = RX_Next + 1 and there is at least one missing byte segment of the SDU associated with SN = RX_Next before the last byte of all received segments of this SDU, the first device 110 can perform at least one of: starting timer t-Reassembly, setting RX_Next_Status_Trigger  to RX_Next_Highest. The timer t-Reassembly is used by the receiving side of an AM RLC entity and receiving UM RLC entity in order to detect loss of RLC PDUs at lower layer. In this way, it can ensure that a timer for detecting RLC PDU loss timely starts and the status report is timely triggered.

[0080] In some embodiments, a prohibit timer (referred to as “second timer” hereinafter) used by the first device 210 may be introduced, in order to prohibit transmission of the report for RLC SN gap. In some embodiments, the first device 210 may start or restart the second timer after the delivering a report for RLC SN gap to the layer that is lower than RLC. Alternatively, if the second timer is not running, the first device 210 may deliver the report for RLC SN gap to the layer that is lower than RLC (such as, MAC layer or PHY layer) . For example, if the report for RLC SN gap has been triggered and if the second timer is not running, the first device 210 may, at the first transmission opportunity indicated by lower layer, construct a RLC SN gap PDU and submit it to lower layer. In some other embodiments, if the second timer is running, the first device 210 may, at the first transmission opportunity indicated by lower layer after second timer expires, construct a single RLC SN gap PDU, alternatively even if RLC SN gap reporting was triggered several times while the second timer was running, submit it to lower layer. In some embodiments, if a RLC SN gap PDU has been submitted to lower layer, the first device 210 may start second timer. In this way, it can avoid frequently triggering the report for RLC SN gap, thereby avoiding occupying resources for transmitting the report for RLC SN gap and improving resource utilization efficiency.

[0081] In some other embodiments, there may be an additional condition for triggering the report for the RLC SN gap. In this way, it can prevent the report for RLC SN gap from being frequently triggered. Further, it can saves the resources and improve resource utilization efficiency by avoiding frequently transmitting the report for RLC SN gap. For example, the RRC may configure a first threshold (or a first gap / discard threshold) and / or a second threshold (or a second gap / discard threshold) . For example, the first threshold may be gapPDU and the second threshold may be gapByte field, used by the first device 210 to trigger a RLC SN gap report. The first device 210 may maintain a first counter that counts the number of AM data PDUs discard since the most recent RLC SN gap report was transmitted and / or a second counter that counts the number of data bytes discard since the most recent RLC SN gap report was transmitted. For example, the first counter may be “PDU_WITHOUT_GAP” and initially set to 0. The second counter may be  “BYTE_WITHOUT_GAP” and initially set to 0. In this case, if a value of the first counter is equal to or larger than a first threshold or a value of the second counter is equal to or larger than a second threshold, the first device 210 may determine that the report for RLC SN gap is triggered. Table 4 shows an example additional condition for triggering the report for RLC SN gap at the second device 220.

[0082] Table 4

[0083] In addition, in some embodiment, the report for RLC SN gap may also be triggered based on the available SN space of the RLC window. For example, by comparing the spare space of the RLC transmitting side window and the difference between the maximum SN of the transmitted RLC SDU and the minimum SN of the discarded RLC SDU, the first device 210 may determine whether to trigger the report for RLC SN gap.

[0084] Reference is made to FIG. 5, which illustrates a signaling flow 500 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow involves the first device 510 and the second device 520. In some embodiments, the first device 510 may be the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1 and the second device 520 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1. In some other embodiments, the first device 510 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1 and the second device 520 may be the terminal device 110. Alternatively, the first device 510 may be an RLC entity at transmitting side and the second device 520 may be an RLC entity at receiving side.

[0085] The first device 510 determines (5010) that indication information indicates a status report trigger based on at least one of conditions (referred to as “second condition” ) is satisfied. In some embodiments, the indication information may include a poll indication for the status report trigger. In some embodiments, the indication may be  included in the acknowledge mode date (AMD) PDU or control PDU. Alternatively, the indication information may be a control PDU for the status report trigger.

[0086] In some embodiments, the second condition may include data becomes delay-critical data or there is delay-critical data. In some embodiments, the data may include PDU. Alternatively, or in addition, the data may include one or more PDU sets. The delay-critical data may include the delay-critical RLC SDU and / or delay-critical PDCP SDU. For example, the delay-critical PDCP SDU may refer to: if a pdu-SetDiscard is not configured, a PDCP SDU for which the remaining time till timer discardTimer expiry is less than the remainingTimeThreshold; Ifpdu-SetDiscard is configured, a PDCP SDU belonging to a PDU Set of which at least one PDCP SDU has the remaining time till a timer discardTimer expiry less than the remainingTimeThreshold. In some other embodiments, delay-critical RLC SDU corresponding to a PDCP PDU indicated as delay-critical by PDCP. The pdu-SetDiscard may be used to determine whether the UE perform the PDU set based discarding. Ifpdu-SetDiscard the is set to true, UE shall perform PDU Set based discarding for this PDCP entity. The timer discardTimer may be any suitable time length.

[0087] In some embodiments, the second condition may include that a remaining delay budget of the data is below a delay budget threshold (also referred to as “third threshold” ) . For example, the second condition may include that there is data (e.g., RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment) with remaining time / delay budget below the third threshold.

[0088] In some other embodiments, the second condition may include that the data including a data unit belonging to a protocol data unit set of which at least one data unit has a remining time less than a first remaining time threshold (also referred to as “fourth threshold” ) . For example, if the PDU set based discard (i.e., pdu-setDiscard) is configured, there is the RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment belonging to the PDU set of which at least one PDCP SDU (corresponding to PDCP PDU and RLC SDU) has the remaining time less than the fourth threshold.

[0089] In some embodiments, the second condition may include a remaining time of the data is less than a second remining time threshold (also referred to as “fifth threshold” ) and data importance of the data is above an importance threshold (also referred to as “sixth threshold” ) . In some embodiments, the third threshold or fourth threshold or fifth threshold may be a same threshold used to determine the delay-critical data (i.e., used for  delay status report (DSR) ) or separated thresholds. In other words, the third threshold or fourth threshold or fifth threshold may be same as those used for DSR or may be different from those used for DSR. In some embodiments, two or more of: the third threshold, fourth threshold or fifth threshold may be the same or different.

[0090] The first device 510 transmits (5020) the indication information to the second device 520. That is, the second device 520 receives (5020) the indication information from the first device 510.

[0091] FIG. 6A to FIG. 6C illustrate schematic diagrams of indication format, respectively. As shown in FIG. 6A to FIG. 6C, the D / C field 610 in the indication information may indicate whether the RLC PDU is an RLC data PDU or RLC control PDU. In some embodiments, value 0 refer to control PDU, 1 refer to data PDU. The CPT field 620 may indicate the type of the RLC control PDU. One new value in CPT field 620 indicate the control PDU is used for STATUS report trigger or for poll. In some embodiments, the PDU for indication information may include a P field 630 that indicates whether or not the first device 510 requests a STATUS report from its peer AM RLC entity. For example, the value 1 may refer to trigger the status report. The PDU for indication information may include an SN field 640 that indicate the POLL_SN.

[0092] In some embodiments, a prohibit timer (also referred to as “other prohibit timer” hereinafter) may be introduced to avoid the frequency poll. In some embodiments, the first device 510 may start the other prohibit timer after delivering the indication information indicating the status report trigger to a layer that is lower than RLC. Alternatively, or in addition, if the other prohibit timer is not running or the other prohibit timer expires, the first device 510 may deliver the indication information indicating the status report trigger to a layer that is lower than RLC. In some other embodiments, if the other prohibit timer is not running and the at least one of the second conditions is satisfied, the first device 510 may determine that the indication information indicates the status report trigger.

[0093] For example, when the indication information is submitted to lower layer or when a control PDU for poll / STATUS report trigger is submitted to the lower layer, the first device 510 may start the other prohibit timer. In this case, when the other prohibit timer is running, the first device 510 may not include the indication information (such as, poll) in the AMD PDU or not trigger the control PDU for poll.

[0094] In some embodiments, if the other prohibit timer is not running, the first device 510 may include the poll in the PDU based on at least one of following: if there is delay-critical data; if there is data with remaining time / delay budget below the delay budget threshold; if the PDU set based discard (i.e., pdu-setDiscard) is configured, and there is data belonging to the PDU set of which at least one PDCP SDU (corresponding to PDCP PDU and RLC SDU) has the remaining time less than the first remaining time threshold; or if the remaining time of the data is less than the second remaining time threshold, and the PSI of the data is above the importance threshold. In some other embodiments, if the other prohibit timer is not running, the first device 510 may trigger a control PDU for poll based on at least one of the following: there is the data with the remaining time below the first remaining time threshold; or if the remaining time of the data is less than the first remaining time threshold, and the PSI of the data is above the importance threshold. Alternatively, in some embodiments, if the other prohibit timer is not running, the first device 510 may, at the transmission opportunity indicated by lower layer, contrast a PDU (e.g., control PDU) for Poll and submit it to lower layer. Alternatively, ifthe other prohibit timer is running, the first device 510 may, at the transmission opportunity indicated by lower layer after the timer expires, construct a control PDU for poll and submit it to lower layer. In some embodiments, in case the other prohibit timer is running, the first device 510 may, at the transmission opportunity indicated by lower layer after the other prohibit timer expires, construct a single control PDU for Poll even if control PDU for poll was triggered several times while timer was running and submit it to lower layer. In this way, it can avoid trigger the frequent poll, and avoid the resource impact of control PDU for poll on delay critical data transmission.

[0095] In some embodiments, if the SN is included in the indication information, the first device 510 may set poll send state variable to the sequence number indicated in the indication information. In some embodiments, upon submission of a control PDU for / including a poll or AMD PDU including a poll to lower layer, the first device 510 may set POLL_SN to the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer. Alternatively, the first device 510 may set the POLL_SN to the SN indicated by SN field in control PDU, if the SN include in control PDU for poll. The variable POLL_SN may refer to a Poll send state variable. This state variable holds the value of the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer when POLL_SN is set. It is initially set to 0. In some embodiments, upon submission of a control  PDU for / including a poll or AMD PDU including a poll to lower layer, if a timer t-PollRetransmit is not running, the first device 510 may start t-PollRetransmit; Otherwise, if the timer t-PollRetranmit is running, the first device 510 may stop and / or reset the t-PollRetransmit. In some other embodiments, upon receiving the control PDU for poll or control PDU including the polling from its peer AM RLC entity and P field set to "1 " , the second device 520 may trigger a status report.

[0096] Reference is made to FIG. 7, which illustrates a signaling flow 700 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow involves the first device 710 and the second device 720. In some embodiments, the first device 710 may be the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1 and the second device 720 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1. In some other embodiments, the first device 710 may be the network device 120 in FIG. 1 and the second device 720 may be the terminal device 110. Alternatively, the first device 710 may be an RLC entity at transmitting side and the second device 720 may be an RLC entity at receiving side.

[0097] The first device 710 increases (7010) a value of a counter for counting the number of failure instance if a failure instance is detected. If the value of the counter exceeds a threshold within a period of time, the first device 710 determines (7020) that a radio link failure is triggered or detected. Alternatively, if the value of the counter does not exceed the threshold or no failure instance being detected within the period of time, the first device 710 reset (7030) the counter. It is noted that the period of time can be any suitable time length. In this way, it can introduce a new RLF detection mechanism based on discard / failure instance in a period time.

[0098] In some embodiments, the first device 710 determines (7020) that a radio link failure is triggered based on the failure instance number (e.g., third counter) and / or timer (e.g., third timer) . For example, if failure instance indication has been detected or triggered or a PDU has been discarded, start or restart the third timer; increase the third counter by 1. If the third counter equal to the maximum count threshold, the first device 710 consider radio link failure is triggered or detected. In some embodiments, if the third timer expires, or ifthe maximum count threshold or the third timer is configured, the first device 710 reset the third counter to 0. In some embodiments, if data is discarded due to an expiration of a discarding timer or an expiration of packet delay budget (PDB) , the first device 710 may determine that the failure instance is detected. For example, a failure  instance may refer to a PDU (or PDU set) discard due to the PDCP discard timer expire or due to the PDB expire.

[0099] In some other embodiments, if the number of retransmission of data reaches a threshold number, the first device 710 may determine that the failure instance is detected. For example, a failure instance may refer to autonomous retransmission for a PUD / packet reach the maximum number / configured maximum count.

[0100] In some embodiments, the PDU may include the PDU has already been submitted to lower layers. In addition, the PDU may also include the PDU not has been submitted to the lower layer. In some embodiments, the counter may be reset when an ACK is received. Alternatively, the RLF may be triggered when the continuous data / PDU are discarded. In some embodiments, the first device 710 may perform (7040) the radio link failure recovery. It is noted the procedure of the radio link failure recovery can be performed in any suitable manner.

[0101] Table 5 and Table 6 show procedures for RLF detection mechanism at the first device 710, respectively.

[0102] Table 5

[0103] Table 6

[0104] In some embodiments, the second device (for example, the second device 220, 520, or 720, or the network device 120) may indicate whether the autonomous retransmission can be used / configured / enabled. In some embodiment, it can be configured or indicated by RRC (e.g., a field in RLC-config) . The term “autonomous retransmission” may refer to the retransmission triggered by the conditions (referred to as “third condition” hereinafter) . In some embodiments, the first device (for example, the first device 210, 510, or 710, or the terminal device 110) may perform the autonomous retransmission if the third condition is satisfied. In some embodiments, the third condition may include that the remaining time of the data is below a third remaining time threshold, the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) retransmission attempt for a number of times or any other third condition. For example, if the remaining time of a data is below the third remaining time threshold, the first device (for example, the first device 210, 510, or 710, or the terminal device 110) may trigger or perform the autonomous retransmission. In this way, it proposes RLF handling due to autonomous retransmission and autonomous retransmission mechanism can improve the capacity and user experience.

[0105] In some embodiments, the second device (220 or 520 or 720 or the network device 120) may indicate or configure whether the RLF can be triggered based on RLC autonomous retransmission. For example, if the second device (220 or 520 or 720 or the network device 120) indicates that the RLF can be triggered due to the RLC autonomous retransmission, upon the RLC autonomous retransmission is transmitted, the first device (210 or 510 or 710 or the terminal device 110) may increase a counter RETX_COUNT by 1. Alternatively, if the second device (220 or 520 or 720 or the network device 120)  indicates that the RLF cannot be triggered due to the RLC auto retransmission, the counter RETX_COUNT may not be increased when the autonomous RLC retransmission is transmitted. The RETX_COUNT may only be increased when the retransmission is not due to the autonomous retransmission. The counter RETX_COUNT may count the number of retransmissions of an RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure whether the counter RETX_COUNT is used for counting the number of retransmissions of an RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment. For example, in some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure that the counter RETX_COUNT is used for counting the number of retransmissions in the configuration of the autonomous retransmission.

[0106] In some embodiments, a separated counter RETX_COUNT for autonomous retransmission (for example, named as “AU_RETX_COUNT” ) may be introduced. Alternatively, a timer controlling the autonomous retransmission may be introduced. For example, if a counter AU_RETX_COUNT reaches the threshold or the timer expire, the first device 510 may not trigger the RLF. Alternatively, in some embodiments, if the AU_RETX_COUNT reaches the threshold or the timer expire, the first device 510 trigger the polling (i.e., the indication information) .

[0107] In some embodiments, the RETX_COUNT may be increased when the retransmission is not due to the autonomous retransmission. The counter RETX_COUNTmay count the number of retransmissions of an RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment. In some embodiments, the priority of AMD PDU for autonomous retransmission may be lower than the new transmission for AMD PDU including the delay-critical data. Table 7 shows an example of RETX_COUNT counter procedure for retransmission at the first device 510.

[0108] Table 7

[0109] It is noted that all of above embodiments can be implemented in any suitable manner. For example, one or more steps from one or more embodiments described with reference to FIG. 2 to FIG. 7 can be combined in any suitable manner. Alternatively, embodiments described with reference to FIG. 2 to FIG. 7 can be implemented separately.

[0110] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 800 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 800 may be implemented at the terminal device 110 or the network device 120 in FIG. 1.

[0111] At block 810, the first device determines that a report for radio link control (RLC) sequence number (SN) gap is triggered based on at least one of the following conditions is satisfied: an RLC service data unit (SDU) is discarded, a retransmission of the RLC SDU is stopped, the RLC SDU is already associated with an SN value, the discarded RLC SDU has not been submitted to a lower layer, the discarded RLC SDU has been submitted to the lower layer but is not acknowledged, or there is at least one stored RLC SDU associated with an SN value that is not smaller than an SN value associated with a discarded RLC SDU.

[0112] At block 880, first device transmits the report for RLC SN gap to a second device.

[0113] In some example embodiments, the method 800 further comprises: starting or restarting a first timer after delivering the report for RLC SN gap to a layer that is lower than RLC; and / or retransmitting the report for RLC SN gap or trigger another report for RLC SN gap, after an expiration of the first timer.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the method 800 further comprises: receiving, from the second device, feedback regarding the report for RLC SN gap, wherein the feedback is at least one of: a feedback report regarding the report for RLC SN gap or a RLC status report.
