[0003] The present invention relates to an adjustable safety car seat. In particular, the invention is concerned with an improved child’s safety car seat which is integrated into a car’s main seat and is capable of adjusting to the child’s requirements.

[0005] Children’s safety car seats are used to ensure the safe transportation and protection of young passengers in vehicles. According to UK government guidelines, children are advised to use a safety car seat until they reach the age of 12 or a height of 135 centimetres, whichever occurs first. These guidelines are structured to provide appropriate safety measures for transporting children in vehicles throughout the different stages of a child's growth and development.

Infants, from birth to 18 months, typically require rear-facing infant seats to provide optimal support for their delicate neck and spine. As children grow older, forward-facing seats become suitable from around 9 months to 4 years of age, offering enhanced protection in the event of a frontal collision. Booster seats cater to children aged 4 to 6 years, ensuring proper seat belt placement and improved comfort during travel. [0019] According to a first independent aspect of the invention there is provided an adjustable safety car seat configured to integrate within a main seat of a vehicle. The adjustable safety car seat comprises a moveable seat panel comprising a first face and a second face; a moveable back panel comprising a front face, a back face, and at least one joining edge; and at least one moveable side panel comprising a front face and a back face. The at least one moveable side panel comprises a hinge joint configured to attach the moveable side panel to the moveable back panel along the joining edge and to enable pivotal rotation of the side panel about an axis aligned with the joining edge. The moveable seat panel is integrated within a seat structure of a main seat of a vehicle in a retracted position such that the first face of the moveable seat panel is substantially flush and in the same plane as a main surface of the seat structure of a main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use. The moveable back panel is configured to integrate within a backrest frame of the main seat of a vehicle in a nested position such that the front face of the movable back panel is substantially flush and in the same plane as a main surface of the backrest frame of a main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use. The at least one moveable side panel is configured in a stowed position that is substantially parallel to the moveable back panel and integrates within the backrest frame of the main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use. The disclosed safety car seat is characterised by its adjustability and integration within the existing structure of a vehicle seat. The adjustable safety car seat includes a moveable seat panel, which has a first face and a second face. The first face is the surface that would support the child passenger when the adjustable safety car seat is deployed and an adult passenger when integrated in the seat structure of the main seat when in the retracted position. Advantageously, the integration of the moveable seat panel within the seat structure of the main vehicle seat ensures that, when the safety seat is not in use, the first face of the moveable seat panel is visible, maintaining the appearance and function of a standard vehicle seat. The second face is oriented away from the passenger, facing the internal mechanism of the seat structure of the main vehicle seat. The moveable back panel is similarly defined by a front face, which faces the passenger, and a back face, which faces the internal backrest frame. Advantageously, the moveable back panel is integrated within the backrest frame of the main seat, such that only its front face is visible when the safety seat is not deployed. At least one moveable side panel is also included, with its own front and back faces. Advantageously, the at least one moveable side panel is configured to be substantially parallel to the moveable back panel and is also integrated within the backrest frame when not in use, ensuring a seamless appearance. Advantageously, the hinge joint allows the side panel to be both attached to and move relative to the moveable back panel, facilitating the adjustment or deployment of the safety seat.

[0064] FIG. 1 illustrates a first embodiment of an adjustable safety car seat 100 wherein the adjustable safety car seat 100 is integrated into a main vehicle seat 200. The seat is suitable, when not deployed as a child seat, to accommodate an adult passenger. When the adjustable safety car seat 100 is not in use, a moveable back panel 110 is situated within a backrest frame 210 of the main vehicle seat 200 and the front face 111 of the moveable back panel 110 is visible. A moveable seat panel 120 is situated within a seat structure 220 of the main vehicle seat 200 with the first face 121 visible. It will be appreciated that in use, the elements such as the moveable back panel 110, backrest frame 210, the moveable seat panel 120, the moveable side panels 112, which support the child or adult passenger would be covered with padding typically used in vehicles, for the comfort of the passenger. The padding is moveable with movement of an element of the car seat and also serves as padding for an adult user, preferably being aesthetically integrated with the rest of the upholstery of the car.
[0065] When the adjustable safety car seat is not in use and integrated into the main vehicle seat 200, the back panel is in the nested position. The cover of the moveable back panel 110 is overlaid with the backrest cover of the backrest frame 210 in a way that makes the moveable back panel 110 and back panel cover appear to fuse into the backrest cover of the backrest frame 210 creating a main surface of the backrest frame when the adjustable safety seat 100 is not in use. When not in use and the seat panel is in the retracted position, the side-retainers 122 of the moveable seat panel 120 are overlaid on and optionally rest on the side seat bolsters 222 of the seat structure 220. This allows the moveable seat panel 120 to appearfused to the seat structure 220 creating a main surface of the seat structure when the adjustable safety car seat 100 is not in use. The seat panel cover (not shown) also appears to fuse with the seat structure cover, furthering the illusion that the moveable seat panel is fused with the seat structure 220. Alternatively the moveable back panel 110 and moveable seat panel 120 may be located behind the back panel cover and the cover of the seat structure 220 of the main vehicle seat 200. The covers may be zipped down and pulled away from the main structure to reveal the adjustable safety car seat 100 which can then be manoeuvred into the required position. The moveable back panel 110 and the moveable seat panel 120 is comprised of sheet metal, but it can be appreciated that other suitable materials may be used in order to form the panels of the adjustable safety car seat 100.

The moveable side panel 112 can operate an adjustable arm rest (not shown in Fig. 2) and an adjustable headrest (not shown). The arm rest may take the form of a padded flankwhich forms a protective barrier for younger children, or alternatively the arm rest may be adjusted to support the arm of an older child. Claims
CLAIMS1. An adjustable safety car seat for a passenger comprising: a moveable seat panel comprising a first face and a second face; a moveable back panel comprising a front face, a back face, and at least one joining edge; and at least one moveable side panel comprising a front face and a back face, wherein the at least one moveable side panel comprises a hinge joint configured to attach the moveable side panel to the moveable back panel along the joining edge and to enable pivotal rotation of the side panel about an axis aligned with the joining edge; and the moveable seat panel is integrated within a seat structure of a main seat of a vehicle in a retracted position such that the first face of the moveable seat panel is substantially flush and in the same plane as a main surface of the seat structure of a main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use; and the moveable back panel is configured to integrate within a backrest frame of the main seat of a vehicle in a nested position such that the front face of the movable back panel is substantially flush and in the same plane as a main surface of the backrest frame of a main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use, and the at least one moveable side panel is configured in a stowed position that is substantially parallel to the moveable back panel and integrates within the backrest frame of the main seat of a vehicle when the adjustable safety car seat is not in use.
2. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 1, wherein the hinge joint is configured to allow the at least one moveable side panel to pivot reversibly between the stowed position and a deployed position whereby the moveable side panel is angled relative to the moveable back panel along the axis of the joining edge when the adjustable safety car seat is in use.
3. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the moveable seat panel further comprises at least one side retainer.
4. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 3, wherein the at least one side retainer overlays at least one side seat bolster of the main seat of a vehicle when the moveable seat panel is in the retracted position.
5. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the moveable seat panel comprises a scissor lift mechanism configured to allow the movable seat panel to reversibly move between the retracted position and an extended position, in which the movable seat panel is raised along a substantially vertical axis away from the seat structure of the main seat of a vehicle.
6. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 5, wherein the scissor lift mechanism comprises a base, at least one pair of pivotably connected scissor legs, and a platform wherein the platform is configured to be attached to the second face of the moveable seat panel.
7. An adjustable safety car seat according to claims 5 or claim 6, wherein the scissor lift mechanism is actuated by a seat adjustor mechanism which comprises; at least one rod; and at least one bar; andthe at least one rod is configured to attach to the at least one bar and the at least one bar is configured to attach to at least one of the legs of the pivotably connected scissor legs.
8. An adjustable safety car seat according to either claim 6 or claim 7, wherein the base of the scissor lift mechanism further comprises at least one locking groove configured to receive the at least one bar of the seat adjustor mechanism.
9. An adjustable safety car seat according to either claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the seat adjustor mechanism, upon actuation, provides a force that engages the at least one rod which extends and the rod transfers the force to the at least one bar, the bar transferring the force to at least one scissor leg, and the scissor leg transferring the force to reversibly move the moveable seat panel to the extended position.
10. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 9, wherein, upon actuation of the seat adjustor mechanism, the bar is received via the at least one locking groove of the scissor lift mechanism.
11. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the at least one side panel further comprises a flank which is configured to act as sides of a first headrest.
12. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the moveable back panel is configured to receive a first headrest for supporting the passenger's head.
13. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 12, wherein the main seat of a vehicle comprises a second headrest, and wherein the first headrest received by the moveable back panel comprises the second headrest.
14. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the moveable back panel comprises at least one strut attached to the back face of the moveable back panel and is configured to reversibly move the moveable back panel between the nested position, and a raised position, in which the movable back panel is elevated away from and adjustably positioned relative to the to the backrest frame of the main seat of a vehicle.
15. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the moveable back panel comprises at least one stabilising element configured to attach to the back face of the moveable back panel and engages with the backrest frame of a main vehicle seat in order to stabilise the moveable back panel when the moveable back panel is in the raised position.
16. An adjustable safety car seat according to claim 15, wherein the strut is the stabilising element.
17. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the adjustable safety car seat is padded and upholstered.
18. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the adjustable safety car seat is adjustable electrically.
19. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the adjustable safety car seat is adjustable by hydraulics.
20. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the adjustable safety car seat is adjusted by pneumatics.
21. An adjustable safety car seat according to any preceding claim, wherein the adjustable safety car seat comprises a control panel for controlling the configurations of the adjustable safety car seat.
22. A main seat of a vehicle comprising an adjustable safety car seat according to any one of the preceding claims.
