[0046] Fig. 1A illustrates an example network environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises terminal devices and network devices.

[0047] As illustrated in Fig. 1A, the communication network 100 may comprise a terminal device 110 (hereinafter may also be referred to as user equipment 110 or a UE 110) , and a network device 120. The network device 120 can manage one or more cell, for example, cell 101 and cell 102. The cell 101 may be a PCell, and the cell 102 may be a PSCell or a SCell. It is to be understood that the number of the cell only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations, e.g., the network device 120 may manage one or more SCell. The terminal device 110 may communicate with the network device 120 in the coverage of the cell 101 or the cell 102.

[0048] It is to be understood that the number of devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The system 100 may include any suitable number of terminal devices or network devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more terminal devices or network devices may be located in the environment 100.

[0049] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) and the fifth generation (5G) and on the like,  wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: code division multiple access (CDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division duplex (FDD) , time division duplex (TDD) , multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) , discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0050] Since the beginning of 5G NR, it’s been widely understood that a UE operating at higher carrier frequencies, typically known as FR2, would require some degree of UE Rx beamforming. It was also generally agreed that the UE in FR2 would possess more than a single antenna panel. Teardown studies of existing premium tear smartphones reveal that up to three mmwave antenna modules may be implemented. These come even with different number of antenna patches indicating that beams per panel may be different among the panels. However, there are no specific requirements for the UE regarding the number of panels.

[0051] In some implementations, an mmwave antenna module may include simple receiver demodulators, and the hardware system allows much faster operation of the mmwave module, when the FR2 signal is of minimal bandwidth (detectable with FR1 HW components) . The hardware includes FR2 components allowing the mmwave module to include down conversion and data processing of 8 parallel receivers.

[0052] In some other implementations, FR1 receiver may be reused for narrow bandwidth signal processing in FR2. The hardware implementation allows similar faster enablement of FR2 measurements, where a sharing of the FR1 receivers may be used for accessing the signal from FR2 from multiple panels simultaneously.

[0053] In view of above, the designs of a UE may have hardware that enables measurements of signals at a much faster rate than before and that each mmwave module can deliver results simultaneously.

[0054] For NR to function effectively in FR2, both the network (e.g., gNB) and the UE would need to employ some form of beamforming. Beamforming refers to the application of one or more optimized antenna spatial settings to direct the transmission or reception in a specific direction. This approach differs from previous systems not operating in FR2, where  omni-directional reception and transmission were the norm. The reason for using beam forming is that there is insufficient power available from power amplifier (PA) technology to get a small size, low power consuming integrated circuits, so several PAs and antenna patch elements are combined to get the needed output power, and patch arrays allow phase alignment to shape the radiated direction of the antenna panel to focus the energy. For the downlink operation the phased arrays serve also to increase the combined input signal strength from the antenna patch elements, serving as an advantage in the gain budget of the radio design.

[0055] RAN4 is working on the FR2-1 synchronization signal block (SSB) based L3 measurement delay reduction for connected mode. For the UE supporting multiple-Rx simultaneous reception on single carrier, suitable scenarios and conditions are studied. If feasible, methods to reduce FR2-1 L3 measurement delay by optimizing, e.g., Rx beam sweeping factor, are introduced. Fast SCell activation for UE supporting Rel-18 EMR is studied and, if feasible, to reduce the SCell activation delay with valid EMR reporting. Applying fast SCell activation in FR1 and FR2-1 is studied, too.

[0056] The maximum activation time of an unknown SCell is given in Table 1.

[0057] Table 1 Requirement for SCell activation time

[0058] As seen in the table, the required activation time shown in Table 1 is a sum of several numbers in the first equation or the second equation. TFirstSSB_MAX + 15*TSMTC_MAX indicates the time allowed for the UE to perform AGC measurements, and 8*Trs + TL1-RSRP, measure indicates the time allowed for the UE to perform time / frequency synchronization and L1-RSRP measurements. In Rel-18 WI 8*Trs + TL1-RSRP, measure was optimized to reduce the activation time. This is reflected in the second equation, i.e., X1*Trs, enhanced + TL1-RSRP, enhanced_measure if the UE supports the relevant capability.

[0059] There are 1+15 periods for adjusting AGC in the equation. The assumption for the AGC measurements time (TFirstSSB_MAX + 15*TSMTC_MAX) is that the UE can perform measurement in one direction / beam at a time and on top of that the UE may require 2 samples in each direction / beam and 16 periods for the two samples to adjust the AGC gain for the subsequent time and frequency (T / F) synchronization and L1-RSRP measurements.

[0060] Fig. 1B illustrates an example of a UE with 8 beams, and the 8 beams are swept around the UE spherical coverage. As shown in Fig. 1C, the 8 beams are swept around the UE spherical coverage for each of the 2 samples, and 16 samples are needed. Therefore, it requires a total number of 16 SMTC windows to complete the AGC part of the SCell activation procedure. The time period corresponds to the time for AGC measurements in Table 1.

[0061] Since the dynamic range of the RF receiver is limited, an AGC is tuned at different gain levels to secure that the signal is exposed to both a high gain and a low gain. The high gain supports low signal levels, but there is a risk of distortion if signal is of high input power level. The low gain supports high signal levels, but there is a risk of too less amplification if signal is of low input power level. Beam directions and AGC gain levels are associated to make it clear why there is a need of a first and a second sample interval. The AGC functionality may be distributed between RF components in FR2. Some amplifiers in FR2 may be adjustable, and some at the intermediate frequency may be adjustable, and finally some at baseband (Zero / Low-IF) may be adjustable.

[0062] In one example, the TFirstSSB_MAX and TSMTC_MAX are both 20ms, and the total time  for AGC measurements is then 320ms, which is a significant time in fast moving mobility scenarios. The time for AGC measurement needs to be reduced during FR2 SCell activation of unknown cell procedure.

[0063] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution is provided for a measurement for activating a cell. The measurement can be the measurement for AGC as described in some of the examples. It can also be applied to other measurements during the SCell activation procedure. In one aspect of this solution, a terminal device receives an activation signalling for activating a cell. The terminal device then performs a measurement for activating the cell with multiple receive (RX) chains, and an activation delay of the cell is determined based on the number of the multiple RX chains and to which types of measurements the solution is applied. In this way, the time for measurement is reduced and the activation delay of the cell is reduced. Therefore, the communication efficiency is improved. Principles and implementations of embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to Figs. 2-9.

[0064] Fig. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120. It would be appreciated that although the process 200 has been described in the communication environment 100 of Fig. 1A, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios with similar issues.

[0065] In the process 200, the network device 120 transmits 210 an activation signalling 215 for activating a cell to the terminal device 110. The cell may comprise a FR2 SCell or a PSCell of the terminal device 110. For instance, the activation signaling 215 may be a SCell activation command or an RRC reconfiguration message. Correspondingly, the terminal device 110 receives 220 the activation signaling 215.

[0066] Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may further transmit capability information to the network device 120. The capability information may indicate that the terminal device 110 is capable of reception with multiple RX chains. The capability information may further indicate the type of the measurement to which the capability information to be applied during an activation of the cell. Correspondingly, the network device 120 receives the capability information from the terminal device 110.

[0067] In order to speed up the time needed / used for AGC during SCell activation of an  unknown cell, the terminal device 110 may use multiple RX antenna beam reception (i.e., multiple RX chains) . In an example, the terminal device 110 may informs it is capable of multi-Rx reception after connecting to network.

[0068] In some embodiments, the type of the measurement may comprise a measurement for automatic gain control AGC, a measurement for time tracking, a measurement for frequency tracking, a layer 1 reference signal receiving power (L1-RSRP) measurement, or a combination of above two or more of the above -mentioned items.

[0069] Additionally, the multiple RX chains may be enabled in a SMTC window for performing the measurement. Instead of enabling a single UE beam in each SMTC window, the terminal device 110 may be required to enable multiple RX chains (or multiple RX beams) in each SMTC window and hence perform the needed AGC measurement in a smaller number of SMTC windows compared to the common SCell activation delay requirement. The SCell activation delay requirement for the terminal device 110 will be determined depend on capabilities of the terminal device 110.

[0070] Alternatively, the multiple RX chains may be enabled in the case that the terminal device is capable of using SS block (SSB) periodicity for activating a cell irrespective of the SMTC window. In other words, the measurement may be performed based on SSB periodicity instead of the SMTC window.

[0071] In order for the network device 120 to have information of the activation time required for the terminal device 110, the capability information may comprise a number of the multiple RX chains for the measurement, a number of samples for the measurement per RX chain, or a combination of above two items.

[0072] Additionally, the number of the multiple RX chains for the measurement may be more than 1. For example, the number of the multiple RX chains may be 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8. In addition, the number of the samples for the AGC measurement per RX chain may be no more than 2. The SCell activation delay is reduced by increasing the number of the RX chains for simultaneous measurements and reducing the samples for the measurement per RX chain.

[0073] In common AGC measurement for the activation time requirement, it is assumed that the terminal device 110 needs 2 samples for each measured RX beams. However, for a UE receiving DL data on FR2 carriers, the dynamic range of the UE RF frontend might allow a lower number of AGC measurement. In an example, the terminal device 110 may need a single sample for AGC measurements on each beam. In another example, the terminal device  110 may even totally skip the AGC measurement.

[0074] Continuing with reference to Fig. 2, the terminal device 110 performs 225 a measurement for activating the cell with multiple RX chains, and an activation delay of the cell is determined based on the number of the multiple RX chains. On the other side of the communication, for the terminal device 110, the network device 120 determines 230 an activation delay of the cell based on the number of multiple RX chains of the terminal device 110 for performing a measurement for activating the cell.

[0075] In some embodiments, the activation delay may be determined based on a factor derived from a number of simultaneous active RX chains for the measurement, the type of the measurement or a combination of above two items. The activation delay may be further determined based on the number of samples required for the measurement.

[0076] The use of simultaneous beams in different directions will not impact the performance of the performed measurements, and it is a way to speed up the time used by the terminal device 110 for performing the measurements. With the multi-RX capabilities of a UE implementation, the UE is required or mandated to use multi-RX reception capabilities for at least the AGC measurements when performing the SCell activation of unknown cell procedure. The capability may also be applied to other type of measurements.

[0077] In an example, a UE capable of 2 simultaneous RX chains for AGC measurements. As shown in Fig. 3, the UE may use 2 simultaneous RX beams for AGC measurements, and the UE performs AGC measurements with 2 samples. The XAGC is equal to 2, and Ceiling (16 / XAGC) -1 is equal to 7. It can be seen that the time used for the AGC measurements is decreased by factor of 2 similar to TfirstSSB_MAX+7*TSMTC_MAX compared to the common implementation.

[0078] In another example, a UE capable of 8 simultaneous RX chains for AGC measurements. As shown in Fig. 4, the UE may use 8 simultaneous RX beams for AGC measurements, and the UE performs AGC measurements with 2 samples. It can be seen that the time used for the AGC measurements is decreased by factor of 8 similar to TfirstSSB_MAX +TSMTC_MAX compared to the common implementation.

[0079] In general, the terminal device 110 may use multi-RX beams for the AGC part of SCell activation of unknown SCell and hence speed up the activation time. More importantly, the SCell activation delay is specified based on the number of Rx chains used for AGC.

[0080] The activation time of an unknown SCell is given in Table 2, and the number of Rx  chains used for AGC differs the activation delay:

[0081] Table 2 Requirement for SCell activation time

[0082] Fig. 5 illustrates an example process of proposed solution according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The procedure 500 may involve a UE 501, a PCell 502, and a SCell 503. It is understood that the process 500 can be considered as a more specific example of the process 200 in Fig. 2. Thus, the UE 501 in Fig. 5 may be an example of the terminal device 110 in Fig. 2, the PCell 502 in Fig. 5 may be an example of a cell managed by the second device 120 in Fig. 2, e.g., the cell 101 in Fig. 1A. The SCell 503 in Fig. 5 may be an example of a cell managed by the second device 120 in Fig. 2.

[0083] As shown in Fig. 5, at 510, the UE 501 is connected to the PCell 502. At 515, the UE 501 informs it is capable of multi-Rx reception by transmitting the multi-RX receive capability to the PCell 502. At 520, the UE 501 receives a SCell configuration / addition  command from the PCell 502. At 525, the UE 501 receives a SCell activation command from the PCell 502.

[0084] At 530, the UE 501 performs AGC with the multiple receive chains, and the delay of performing AGC may be reduced depending on the number of RX chains the UE 501 has or the number of Rx chains UE 501 wants to use. The multiple receive chains used for AGC may lead to a smaller beam sweeping factor (BSF) when determining the delay of performing AGC.

[0085] At 535, the PCell 502 determines the delay of performing AGC measurements, and the delay incurred by AGC part for SCell activation will be reduced as (16 / XAGC -1) *TSMTC, and XAGC is the number of simultaneous active RX chains. (16 / XAGC -1) is called the beam sweeping factor.

[0086] At 540 and 545, the UE 501 may receive SSBs to perform measurements. At 550, after performing AGC, fine time and frequency tracking and L1_RSRP measurement, the UE 501 reports measurement results to the PCell 502. The valid L1 measurement is for SCell 503. At 555, the PCell 502 configures TCI state to the UE 501.

[0087] For the UE with multiple simultaneous RX chains for AGC measurements, it have calculated the delay from the point the SCell activation command is received by the UE, until the UE starts sending a valid L1-RSRP report for the activated unknown Scell, as shown in Table 3,

[0088] Table 3 Numerical example of the activation time for AGC measurements (TSMTC_MAX=20 ms)

[0089] It is assumed that the enhancement of multi-Rx receive capability is for the AGC part. Four cases are considered: 1 Rx chain, i.e., the current assumption for in section 8.3.2, TS38. 133, 2 Rx chains, 4 Rx chains and 8 Rx chains, where the UE have the multi-RX capability. In the Table 3, the values are in millisecond (ms) . In addition, TFirstSSB_MAX is 20ms, TL1-RSRP, measure is 480ms, TSMTC_MAX is 20ms and Trs is 20ms. A reduction of 160 ms by having 2Rx chains compared to legacy and 240 ms for the case with 4Rx. In the case with 8Rx chains at most 28%reduction of SCell activation delay is achievable (with only AGC enhancement and not using Rel-18 enhancement) .

[0090] The columns with R-18 enhancement, includes the case when we have either only reduceForCellDetection capability or both reduceForCellDetection and reduceForSSB-L1. RSRP-Meas. So by comparing the rows with different RX chains, it can be seen that the corresponding gains from extra Rx-chains when R-18 enhancements are also employed.

[0091] As a clarifying example, assuming the best case with Rel-18 enhancements where  X1=1, and reduceForSSB-L1-RSRP-Meas =0. In this case the minimum achievable delay with one Rx-chain is 351 ms while by adding more RX-chains, the delay is reduced up to 71 ms which is 79.8%reduction in SCell activation time.

[0092] The formula and specification for calculating T_Delay are shown in above:

[0093] Legacy: 6ms + TFirstSSB_MAX + 15*TSMTC_MAX + 8*Trs + TL1-RSRP, measure + TL1-RSRP, report

[0094] Proposal with XAGC Rx (Without R-18 enhancements) : 6ms + TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced +(Ceiling (16 / XAGC) -1) *TSMTC_MAX, enhanced+ 8*Trs + TL1-RSRP, measure + TL1-RSRP, report

[0095] Proposal with XAGC Rx (With R-18 enhancements) : 6ms + TFirstSSB_MAX, enhanced +(Ceiling (16 / XAGC) -1) *TSMTC_MAX, enhanced+ X1*Trs+ TL1-RSRP, measure + TL1-RSRP, report

[0096] 38.331 (i10) sec. 6.3.3

[0097] It is to be noted that the T_Delay (only AGC enhancement) is calculated based on formula called proposal with XAGC Rx (without Rel-18 enhancement) . T_delay (with Rel-18, reduceForCellDetection) is calculated based on formula called proposal with XAGC Rx (with Rel-18 enhancement) and considers X1 values, but the term TL1-RSRP, measure, enhance = TL1-RSRP, measure meaning that the effect of reduceForSSB-L1-RSRP-Meas is not considered.

[0098] T_delay (with Rel-18, reduceForCellDetection) is calculated based on formula called proposed with XAGC Rx (with Rel-18 enhancement) and considers both X1 values, and the term TL1-RSRP, measure, enhance.

[0099] In addition, if the value of SMTC periodicity is increased to TSMTC_MAX=40 ms, the effect of having more Rx-chains is more visible, as shown in Table 4.

[0100] Table 4 Numerical example of the activation time for AGC measurements (TSMTC_MAX=40 ms)

[0101] It is assumed that TFirstSSB_MAX is 20ms, TL1-RSRP, measure is 480ms, TSMTC_MAX is 40ms and Trs is 20ms. It shows that even with AGC enhancement and without Rel-18 enhancement, 47%reduction of SCell activation is obtained by using 8-Rx chains. In the best case scenario where both 8-Rx chains and Rel-18 enhancement are employed, up to 92%reduction of activation delay can be achieved.

[0102] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal  device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to Fig. 1A.

[0103] At block 610, the terminal device 110 receives an activation signalling for activating a cell. At block 620, the terminal device 110 performs a measurement for activating the cell with multiple receive (RX) chains, and an activation delay of the cell is determined based on a number of the multiple RX chains.

[0104] In some embodiments, a type of the measurement may comprise a measurement for automatic gain control (AGC) , a measurement for time tracking, a measurement for frequency tracking, a layer 1 reference signal receiving power (L1-RSRP) measurement, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items.
