[0038] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer- premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0039] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like.

[0040] As discussed above, in the wireless communications, UEs may help the network managing radio resources more efficiently by providing assistance information in uplink.

[0041] Generally speaking, the transmission of assistance information consumes radio resources. In order to reduce introducing to much uplink overhead, triggers have been defined. For instance, a regular BSR is sent when high priority data arrives in the UE buffer, and a PHR is sent when the pathloss change meets certain conditions. Besides, periodic BSR / PHR can also be configured.

[0042] Example triggers of the BSR are discussed first. A BSR may be triggered if any of the following events occur for activated cell group:

[0043] - UL data, for a logical channel which belongs to a logical channel group (LCG) , becomes available to the MAC entity; and either

[0044] - this UL data belongs to a logical channel with higher priority than the priority of any logical channel containing available UL data which belong to any LCG; or

[0045] - none of the logical channels which belong to an LCG contains any available UL data.

[0046] in which case the BSR is referred to as 'Regular BSR';

[0047] - UL resources are allocated and number of padding bits is equal to or larger than the  size of the Buffer Status Report MAC CE plus its subheader, in which case the BSR is referred to as 'Padding BSR';

[0048] - retxBSR-Timer expires, and at least one of the logical channels which belong to an LCG contains UL data, in which case the BSR is referred below to as 'Regular BSR';

[0049] - periodicBSR-Timer expires, in which case the BSR is referred below to as 'Periodic BSR'.

[0050] When Regular BSR triggering events occur for multiple logical channels simultaneously, each logical channel triggers one separate Regular BSR.

[0051] A Power Headroom Report (PHR) shall be triggered if any of the following events occur:

[0052] - phr-ProhibitTimer expires or has expired and the path loss has changed more than phr-Tx-PowerFactorChange dB for at least one RS used as pathloss reference for one activated Serving Cell of any MAC entity of which the active downlink (DL) bandwidth part (BWP) is not dormant BWP since the last transmission of a PHR in this MAC entity when the MAC entity has UL resources for new transmission;

[0053] NOTE 1: The path loss variation for one cell assessed above is between the pathloss measured at present time on the current pathloss reference and the pathloss measured at the transmission time of the last transmission of PHR on the pathloss reference in use at that time, irrespective of whether the pathloss reference has changed in between. The current pathloss reference for this purpose does not include any pathloss reference configured using pathlossReferenceRS-Pos in TS 38.331.

[0054] - phr-PeriodicTimer expires;

[0055] - upon configuration or reconfiguration of the power headroom reporting functionality by upper layers, which is not used to disable the function;

[0056] - activation of a secondary cell (SCell) of any MAC entity with configured uplink of which firstActiveDownlinkBWP-Id is not set to dormant BWP;

[0057] - activation of a secondary cell group (SCG) ;

[0058] - addition of the PSCell except if the SCG is deactivated (i.e. primary secondary cell (PSCell) is newly added or changed) ;

[0059] - phr-ProhibitTimer expires or has expired, when the MAC entity has UL resources for new transmission, and the following is true for any of the activated Serving Cells of any MAC entity with configured uplink:

[0060] - there are UL resources allocated for transmission or there is a physical uplink  control channel (PUCCH) transmission on this cell, and the required power backoff due to power management (as allowed by P-MPRc as specified in TS 38.101-1, TS 38.101-2, and TS 38.101-3) for this cell has changed more than phr-Tx-PowerFactorChange dB since the last transmission of a PHR when the MAC entity had UL resources allocated for transmission or PUCCH transmission on this cell.

[0061] - Upon switching of activated BWP from dormant BWP to non-dormant DL BWP of an SCell of any MAC entity with configured uplink;

[0062] - if dpc-Reporting-FR1 is configured, ΔPPowerClass  / ΔPPowerClass, CA / ΔPPowerClass, EN-DC / ΔPPowerClass, NR-DC reporting is triggered upon uplink duty cycle exceedance or upon return to the power class after the duty cycle exceedance, as specified in TS 38.101-1 and TS 38.101-3) .

[0063] - if mpe-Reporting-FR2 is configured, and mpe-ProhibitTimer is not running:

[0064] - the measured power management maximum power reduction (P-MPR) applied to meet frequency range 2 (FR2) maximum permissible exposure (MPE) requirements as specified in TS 38.101-2 is equal to or larger than mpe-Threshold for at least one activated FR2 Serving Cell since the last transmission of a PHR in this MAC entity; or

[0065] - the measured P-MPR applied to meet FR2 MPE requirements as specified in TS 38.101-2 has changed more than phr-Tx-PowerFactorChange dB for at least one activated FR2 Serving Cell since the last transmission of a PHR due to the measured P-MPR applied to meet MPE requirements being equal to or larger than mpe-Threshold in this MAC entity.

[0066] in which case the PHR is referred below to as 'MPE P-MPR report'.

[0067] NOTE 2: The MAC entity should avoid triggering a PHR when the required power backoff due to power management decreases only temporarily (e.g. for up to a few tens of milliseconds) and it should avoid reflecting such temporary decrease in the values of PCMAX, f, c / PH when a PHR is triggered by other triggering conditions.

[0068] NOTE 3: If a HARQ process is configured with cg-RetransmissionTimer and if the PHR is already included in a MAC PDU for transmission on configured grant by this hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process, but not yet transmitted by lower layers, it is up to UE implementation how to handle the PHR content.

[0069] The framework outlined above suffers from several drawbacks, such as, the configuration of triggers is complex for the network and does not allow getting more frequent information at high bit rates; the implementation of triggers is complex and UE processing needs to be dimensioned to guarantee that the triggering conditions will always  be fulfilled, regardless of the bit rate.

[0070] As a result, the outlined above frameworks lack flexibility, and further are complicated and not suitable for the cases of a high bit rate and small subcarrier spacing (SCS) and so on. Therefore, the transmission processes of assistance information need to the further optimized, such that the assistance information may be reported timely while the uplink overhead is under control.

[0071] In the context the present disclosure, BHR and PHR are used as examples of assistance information for describing some specific example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that such example embodiments described are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. In fact, assistance information discussed herein may also include other suitable assistance information, including but not limited to, RLC status, overheating report and so on. In other words, the present disclosure is not limited to the specific types of assistance information.

[0072] Example Environment

[0073] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 100 includes a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. A serving area provided by the second apparatus 120 is called a cell. Further, the second apparatus 120 can provide one or more cells, for example, a cell 102 is provided by the second apparatus 120, as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may be comprised in a terminal device / apparatus and the second apparatus 120 may be comprised in a network device / apparatus serving the terminal device / apparatus.

[0075] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 operating as a network apparatus. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal apparatus may be implemented at a network apparatus or other apparatus, and operations described in connection with a network apparatus may be implemented at a terminal apparatus or other apparatus.

[0076] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 is a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 is a network apparatus, a link from the second apparatus  120 to the first apparatus 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) apparatus (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 110 is a receiving (RX) apparatus (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX apparatus (or a transmitter) and the second apparatus 120 is a RX apparatus (or a receiver) .

[0077] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the second apparatus 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the first apparatus 110 may be another device than a terminal device.

[0078] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , 5.5G, the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0079] Work Principle and Example Signaling for Communication

[0080] As discussed above, legacy frameworks lack flexibility and are complicated. Therefore, the transmission processes of assistance information need to the further  optimized, such that the radio status may be reported timely while the uplink overhead is under control.

[0081] An obvious solution (for the BSR / PHR at least) , would be to configure periodic triggers so that every uplink transport block contains a MAC CE, but that would bring unacceptable overhead especially for a low bit rate scenario.

[0082] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the UE may ignore / deactivate legacy frameworks (i.e., triggers) and / or send assistance information with such as every uplink PDU (or with a shorter periodicity) when receiving grants when certain conditions are met. Details will be discussed with reference to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, where the first apparatus 110 may function as a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 may function as a network apparatus.

[0083] It is to be understood that the operations at the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 should be coordinated. In other words, the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 should have a common understand about configurations, parameters and so on. Such a common understand may be implemented by any suitable interactions between the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 or both the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 applying the same rule, policy, and / or the like.

[0084] In the following, although some operations are described from a perspective of the first apparatus 110, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the second apparatus 120. Similarly, although some operations are described from a perspective of the second apparatus 120, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the first apparatus 110. Merely for brevity, some of the same or similar contents are omitted here.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the assistance information may comprise at least one of the following: a buffer status report, power headroom report (PHR) , a radio link control (RLC) status report, a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) control PDU for status report and other assistance information.

[0086] In operation, the first apparatus 110 determines (240) a condition is met. In some  example embodiments, the condition is associated with a data rate of a transmission from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120. In this event, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met based on that the data rate is larger than or equal to a first threshold. Accordingly, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is not met based on that the data rate is smaller than or equal to the first threshold.

[0087] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the condition is associated with a protocol data unit (PDU) size. Additionally, in some example embodiments, the PDU size may comprise at least one of the following: a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) PDU size, a radio link control (RLC) PDU size, a medium access control (MAC) PDU size, or a Transport block (TB) size. In this event, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met based on that the size of PDU is larger than or equal to a second threshold. Accordingly, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is not met based on that the size of PDU is smaller than or equal to the second threshold.

[0088] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the condition is associated with a type of assistance information to be transmitted. As one example, if the assistance information is BSR, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met. As another example, if the assistance information is PHR, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is not met.

[0089] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the condition is associated with a category of the first apparatus 110. In this event, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met based on that the first apparatus 110 belongs to a pre-determined set of categories. Accordingly, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is not met based on that the first apparatus 110 does not belong to the pre-determined set of categories (or the first apparatus 110 belongs to a further pre-determined set of categories) . As one example, if the first apparatus 110 is a reduced capability (RedCap) apparatus and does not support a high rate transmission, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is not met. As another example, if the first apparatus 110 is a Rel-19 UE, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met.

[0090] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the condition is associated with a capability of the first apparatus 110. In this event, in some cases, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met based on that the capability of the  first apparatus 110 indicating that the first apparatus 110 does not support the at least one trigger configured for transmitting assistance information (for example, certain UE fails to support certain newly-introduced triggers) . Alternatively, or in addition, in some other cases, the first apparatus 110 may determine the condition is met based on that the capability of the first apparatus 110 indicating that the first apparatus 110 supports transmitting the assistance information in each PDU and / or applying the first periodicity.

[0091] It should be noted that, the above example embodiments for determining whether the condition is met may be implemented individually or in any suitable combination.

[0092] Based on that the condition is met, the first apparatus 110 performs (260) the new behaviors according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may ignore (262) at least one trigger configured for transmitting assistance information.

[0094] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may apply (264) a first periodicity for transmitting the assistance information, wherein the first periodicity is different from a second periodicity which is applied in accordance with a determination that the condition is not met. Additionally, in some example embodiments, the first periodicity is a pre-determined length of time or a number of transmissions. As one example, the first periodicity may be defined as, 1ms, 0.5m or a slot and so on. As another example, the first periodicity may be defined as N transmissions, where N is an integer and larger than one. For example, assistant information is included in every PDU (N=1) or every two PDU (N=2) and so on.

[0095] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may transmit (266-1) the assistance information to a second apparatus 120 in each PDU, and the second apparatus 120 may receive (266-2) the assistance information in each PDU accordingly.

[0096] Merely for better understand the above processes, some specific example embodiments are listed as below.

[0097] In some example embodiments, the new behaviors may be linked to a bit rate / PDU size, such that in scenarios where uplink overhead matters (small PDU sizes) , assistance information is only sent when absolutely necessary (i.e. the bit rate / PDU size limiting the sending of assistance information in every PDU) .

[0098] In some example embodiments, the new behaviors may be limited to a subset of the uplink assistance information, for instance BSR and / or PHR, so that only costly triggers are skipped. Further, the bit rate  / PDU size upon which the new behavior also may be configured separately for each piece of assistance information, for instance one PDU size threshold for BSR and another one for PHR.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the new behaviors may be linked to a UE category / class / capability, so that such a UE never has to burden itself with implementing triggers for uplink assistance information. Additionally, this condition may be limited to a subset of the uplink assistance information.

[0100] In some example embodiments, the new behaviors could be modelled as applying a very short periodic timer whenever the conditions described above are met (such that the assistance information is sent in every uplink transport block) .

[0101] Further, the same principle could also apply to status reports at RLC and / or PDCP. In one example, to allow faster moving forward of Tx window, timely RLC status report for acknowledgement may be sent without considering the prohibit timer up to the point where there is a gap detected at the receiver. For the case where HARQ is disabled, RLC status report for ACK and / or NACK may be insistently sent for each transmission.

[0102] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, PDU structure carrying the assistance information may be re-defined as discussed below.

[0103] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 determines that the condition is met, the first apparatus 110 may transmit the assistance information in a packet comprising a sub-header, where the sub-header omits a field indicating a logical channel identity (LCID)  / LCG ID associated with the assistance information and / or omits a field indicating presence of the assistance information. Compared with the legacy mechanism for transmitting the assistance information where the LCH / LCG identity (ies) is comprised, the newly-defined sub-header may save uplink overhead.

[0104] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 determines that the condition is met, the first apparatus 110 may transmit the assistance information in a packet comprising a sub-header with a first format, for example, without LCID or LCG ID. Accordingly, if the first apparatus 110 determines that the condition is not met, the first apparatus 110 may transmit the assistance information in a packet comprising a sub- header with a second format different from the first format, for example, a legacy sub-header comprising the LCID or LCG ID.

[0105] In some example embodiments, the new behaviors may be linked to a new header structure embedding the assistance information to assist the receiver. That is, a new header structure that would not indicate the dynamic presence (e.g. via LCID) of the assistance information. In one example, for the new structure, there could be a fixed number of bits (e.g. in the sub-header) per LCH or a fixed number of bytes per LCH to indicate associated assistance information when there is data included for the LCH in the PDU.

[0106] In another example, the new header structure may be linked to a bit rate / PDU size, such that different header structures are applies depending on the bit rate / PDU size. A small size of header structure can be used for small PDU size while a large size of header structure can be used for large PDU size. Different header structure can be achieved by including different information, e.g., omitting some information.

[0107] In some example embodiments, if the PDU size alone is enough to infer the new header structure, it will not be necessary to signal the occurrence of assistance information to the receiver.

[0108] In some example embodiments, assuming a new header structure is defined, it would be safer to have an explicit indication of which header is used (to cope with possible signalling losses and also have a confirmation in uplink) . Specifically, in some example embodiments, the packet may comprise a field indicating whether the sub-header with the first format or the sub-header with the second format is comprised, which may help the second apparatus 120 to parse the message properly.

[0109] In some example embodiments, a configurable framework may be implemented. In other words, at least part of the above conditions / related parameters may be configured dynamically and / or at least part of the above features / behaviors may be enabled / disabled dynamically. Such example will be discussed as below.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 trasnmits (220-1) configuration information to the first apparatus 110, and the first apparatus 110 receives (220-2) the configuration information accordingly. It should be noted that the configuration information may indicate any of the condition configurations / related parameters as discussed above.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the configuration information may indicate at least one of the following: the first threshold (related to the data rate) , the second threshold (related to the size of PDU) , or the pre-determined set of categories (supporting or failing to support the new behaviors) .

[0112] As discussed above, different types of assistance information (such as, BSR, PHR) may be associated with different conditions. If so, in some example embodiments, assistance information with a first type is associated with a first threshold and / or a second threshold, and assistance information with a second type is associated with a further first threshold and / or a further second threshold.

[0113] Alternatively, or in addition, the second apparatus 120 also may transmit the first indication indicating the first periodicity to the first apparatus 110.

[0114] It should be noted that other conditions / related parameters also may be configured dynamically.

[0115] In some example embodiments, the configuration information and / or the first indication may be comprised in one of the following: a radio resource control (RRC) signalling, a MAC-CE, or downlink control information.

[0116] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may enable / disable the new behaviors dynamically. In operation, the second apparatus 120 may transmit a second indication to the first apparatus 110, where the second indication is used for enabling or disabling at least one of the following:

[0117] ● ignoring the at least one trigger configured for transmitting assistance information;

[0118] ● transmitting the assistance information in each PDU; or

[0119] ● applying the first periodicity for transmitting the assistance information.

[0120] Similar with the configuration information and / or the first indication, the second indication also may be comprised in one of the following: a radio resource control (RRC) signalling, a MAC-CE, or downlink control information.

[0121] Reference is now made to FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B, which illustrate signaling flows 300A and 300B of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0122] As illustrated in 3A, a framework may be fully specified first. For example, the  condition configurations / parameters / behaviors may be re-specified by such as 3GPP, service providers, network operators. In this way, no additional signalings is needed.

[0123] In FIG. 3B, a configured framework is implemented. In the example of FIG. 3B, any of the above discussed condition configurations / parameters / behaviors may be configured by the second apparatus 120. Thus, a more flexible manner is achieved.
