Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR ENHANCING INITIAL RANDOM ACCESSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments relate generally to wireless communication technology, and more particularly, to methods and apparatus for enhancing initial random access, e.g., to a network energy saving cell.BACKGROUND

[0002] Network energy saving is of great importance for environmental sustainability, to reduce environmental impact (greenhouse gas emissions) , and for operational cost savings. As wireless communication network of the fifth generation (5G) is becoming pervasive across industries and geographical areas, handling more advanced services and applications requiring very high data rates (e.g. XR) , networks are being denser, use more antennas, larger bandwidths and more frequency bands. The environmental impact of 5G wireless communication network needs to stay under control, and novel solutions to improve network energy savings need to be developed.

[0061] The following embodiments are exemplary. Although the specification may refer to “an” , “one” , or “some” embodiment (s) in several locations of the text, this does not necessarily mean that each reference is made to the same embodiment (s) , or that a particular feature only applies to a single embodiment. Single features of different embodiments may also be combined to provide other embodiments. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is de-scribed in connection of an embodiment, it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to apply such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described. It shall be understood that although the terms “first, ” “second” and the like may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another.

[0062] For the purposes of the present disclosure, the phrases “at least one of A or B” , “at least one of A and B” , and “A and / or B” means (A) , (B) , or (A and B) . For the purposes of the present disclosure, the phrase “A, B, and / or C” means (A) , (B) , (C) , (A and B) , (A and C) , (B and C) , or (A, B, and C) .

[0063] Embodiments described may be implemented in a communication network, such as any of the following radio access technologies (RATs) : World-wide Interoperability for Micro-wave Access (WiMAX) , Global System for Mobile communications (GSM, 2G) , GSM EDGE radio access Network (GERAN) , General Packet Radio Service (GRPS) , Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS, 3G) based on basic wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, and enhanced LTE  (eLTE) , 5G (also called NR) , or any future RAT such as 6G. Moreover, communication within the communication network may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , and / or Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) .

[0064] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0065] As used herein, the term “network device” or “network node” refers to a node in a communication network via which user equipment may access the network and / or which is capable of controlling radio communication and managing radio resources within a cell. The network node or network device may be referred to as a base station (BS) , an access point (AP) or an access node. The network device may be, depending on the applied technology, for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio head (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth or-bit (GEO) satellite, or an aircraft network device.

[0066] Moreover, in connection of split radio access network (RAN) , the network device may refer to a centralized unit (CU) of a base station and / or a distributed unit (DU) of a base station. An interface between CU and DU may be referred to as an F1 interface in NR. In the split RAN architecture, node operations may be carried out, at least partly, in the central / centralized unit, CU, (e.g. server, host or node) operationally coupled to the DU, (e.g. a radio head / node) . One CU may control one or more DUs, acting at least as transmit / receive (Tx / Rx) nodes. In some embodiments, the DUs may comprise e.g. a radio link control (RLC) , medium access control (MAC) layer and a physical (PHY) layer, whereas the CU may comprise the layers above RLC layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio resource control (RRC) and an internet protocol (IP) layers. Other functional splits are possible too. In practice, any processing task may be performed in either the CU or the DU and the boundary where the responsibility is shifted between the CU and the DU may depend on the applied implementation.

[0067] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example, a terminal device may be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , or a Mobile Station (MS) . The terminal  device may include a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, USB dongles, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like.

[0068] A term “resource” , as used herein, may refer to radio resources in time domain, in frequency domain, in space domain, and / or in code domain. Some examples of resources include e.g. a physical resource block (PRB) , a radio frame, a subframe, a time slot, a subband, a frequency region, a sub-carrier, a beam, etc. The term “transmission” and / or “reception” may refer to wirelessly transmitting and / or receiving via a wireless propagation channel on radio resources.

[0069] The terms “data, ” “content, ” “information, ” and similar terms may be used interchangeably to refer to data capable of being transmitted, received and / or stored in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Thus, use of any such terms should not be taken to limit the spirit and scope of embodiments of the present invention.

[0070] As defined herein, a “computer-readable storage medium, ” which refers to a non-transitory physical storage medium (e.g., volatile or non-volatile memory device) , can be differentiated from a “computer-readable transmission medium, ” which refers to an electromagnetic signal. Such a medium may take many forms, including, but not limited to a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium (e.g., non-volatile media, volatile media) , and transmission media. Transmission media include, for example, coaxial cables, copper wire, fiber optic cables, and carrier waves that travel through space without wires or cables, such as acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves, including radio, optical and infrared waves. Signals include man-made transient variations in amplitude, frequency, phase, polarization or other physical properties transmitted through the transmission media. Examples of non-transitory computer-readable media include a magnetic computer readable medium (e.g., a floppy disk, hard disk, magnetic tape, any other magnetic medium) , an optical computer readable medium (e.g., a compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , a digital versatile disc (DVD) , a Blu-Ray disc, or the like) , a random access memory (RAM) , a programmable read only memory (PROM) , an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) , a FLASH-EPROM, or any other non-transitory medium from which a computer can read. The term computer-readable storage medium is used herein to refer to any computer-readable medium except  transmission media. However, it will be appreciated that where embodiments are described to use a computer-readable storage medium, other types of computer-readable mediums may be substituted for or used in addition to the computer-readable storage medium in alternative embodiments.

[0071] The embodiments provided in the present disclosure may be described with reference to a 5G communication system supporting network energy saving technique. However, it would be appreciated that embodiments of the present disclosure would also be applied in any other suitable wireless communication systems, such as 6G communication system or a future communication system.

[0072] As introduced above, techniques that are beneficial for network energy saving (NES) are being studied. FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary network in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The large ellipse 100 in FIG. 1 represents a coverage area of a cell served with a macro base station, denoted as a Cell A. The smaller ellipses 110, 120, 130 represent coverage areas of small cells, denoted as NES cells. The Cell A can provide basic underlay coverage in the network of a certain area, and thus is also referred to as a coverage cell. The NES cells can be overlaid over the Cell A for capacity boosting purposes particularly within so-called hot spot zones, and thus is also referred to as a capacity cell. Cell A is assumed as Anchor cell of NES cell. UEs can be served by the Cell A or by a NES cell. For example, UE1 in FIG. 1 can be served by Cell A or NES cell #1.

[0073] Cell A and NES cell may be also defined based on transmission mechanism for system information, e.g., system information block 1 (SIB1) . In this regard, Cell A may be defined as a cell that is periodically transmitting at least its own SIB1; while NES cell may be defined a cell that may transmit SIB1 transmission in response to uplink (UL) wake up signal (WUS) from a UE.

[0074] On-demand SIB1 (which is referred to as OD-SIB1 hereinafter) feature for UEs in idle / inactive mode can be applied for enhancing network energy saving (NES) . A NES cell may operate with an OD-SIB1 mode, in which the NES cell (e.g., a gNB1 shown in FIG. 1) will not periodically broadcast the SIB1. The SIB1 of the NES cell will be provided on-demand, i.e., based on the UE in RRC idle or RRC inactive requesting a transmission of SIB1. As shown in FIG. 1, the UE1 can trigger the transmission of SIB1 from NES cell #1, by sending a wake up signal (WUS) , which could e.g., be a Physical Random-Access CHannel (PRACH) , i.e., a preamble.

[0075] This requires that the UE is configured with resources and information to transmit the WUS. In this regard, the UE can obtain, from the Cell A or a NES cell, configuration information of resources and information for transmitting the WUS, which is referred to as UL WUS configuration hereinafter. Cell A (e.g., gNB2) may periodically transmit at least its own SIB1. The configuration  information for transmission of the WUS may be exchanged between gNBs of Cell A and NES cells, if necessary. For example, UL WUS configuration may be transmitted from a NES cell to Cell A via interface Xn, e.g., before the NES cell entering on-demand SIB1 mode or when the UL WUS configuration is changed.

[0076] FIG. 2 illustrates several scenarios of operations for the OD-SIB1 mode. In scenario 1a, a UE (e.g., UE1) obtains the UL WUS configuration from Cell A (e.g., gNB2) . The UL WUS configuration may be transmitted in a system information block (SIB) broadcasted from a base station of Cell A (e.g., gNB2) . Then, the UE may transmit UL WUS to a NES cell (e.g., NEC cell #1 in FIG. 1) according to the obtained UL WUS configuration. In response, the UE receives on-demand SIB1 from the NES cell. The procedure of scenario 2 is similar to scenario 1a, except that the UL WUS configuration is transmitted from Cell A (e.g., gNB2) to the UE in a radio resource control (RRC) release message.

[0077] In scenario 1b, a UE (e.g., UE1) obtains the UL WUS configuration from a Cell A (e.g., gNB2) . The UL WUS configuration may be transmitted in a system information block (SIB) broadcasted from a base station of Cell A (e.g., gNB2) . Then, a UE transmits UL WUS to the Cell A according to the obtained UL WUS configuration, to request a NES Cell’s on-demand SIB1. In a first option, the Cell A receiving the UL WUS needs to communicate the on-demand SIB1 request to the NES Cell (e.g., gNB1) , where the communication may depend on whether the Cell A and the NES Cell share a same centralized unit (CU) or not. In this case, the NES Cell doesn’t need to monitor uplink WUS signals from different UEs, but still needs to transmit the on-demand SIB1 to different UEs accordingly. In this regard, the UE1 may receive the NES Cell’s on-demand SIB1 from the NES cell (gNB1) , in response to the UL WUS.

[0078] In a second option for scenario 1b, as shown by the dashed arrow, a UE may directly communicate with the Cell A for the on-demand SIB1 of a NES Cell. In this case, the NES Cell doesn’t need to monitor uplink WUS from different UEs and transmit the on-demand SIB1 to different UEs respectively. In this case, the Cell A needs to know NES Cell’s SIB1 which may result more traffic on F1 or Xn interface (e.g., response with SIB1 content) .

[0079] Scenarios 1a, 1b and 2 generally occur in a non-standalone network. For standalone network, operations for the OD-SIB1 mode may be that shown in scenario 3. In scenario 3, a UE (e.g., UE1) obtains the UL WUS configuration from the NES Cell (e.g., gNB1) , and then transmits UL WUS to a NES Cell (e.g., gNB1) according to the obtained UL WUS configuration. The UE receives on-demand SIB1 from the NES Cell, in response to the UL WUS.

[0080] Embodiments of the present disclosure focus on scenarios in non-standalone network, such as scenario 1a, and scenario 2. In an example, OD-SIB1 operations in these scenarios comprise the following steps: a UE obtains WUS configuration from a Cell A; the UE sends UL WUS, e.g., in PRACH or Msg1, to a NES cell or the Cell A; the UE may monitor or receive a response (e.g., Random Access Response, RAR) from the NES cell or the Cell A; and then the UE receives OD-SIB1 from the NES cell

[0081] The transmission of UL WUS may be based on PRACH (e.g., in Msg1) . In this regard, information element (IE) “SIB1-RequestConfig” could be used to contain WUS configuration information. At least the following contents or parameters in the IE “SIB1-RequestConfig” shown in Table 1 are proposed as a starting point for PRACH configuration for UL WUS transmission:

[0082] Table 1

[0083] It is assumed that the transmit power control of UL WUS transmission based on PRACH may be performed in a same manner as the legacy PRACH transmission with a power ramp-up procedure. For example, the transmit power control for UL WUS transmission may be performed as specified in 3GPP TS 38.213 (v18.3.0) for PRACH as follows:

[0084] 7.4 Physical random access channel

[0085] A UE determines a transmission power for a physical random access channel (PRACH) , PPRACH,b,f,c (i) , on active UL BWP b of carrier f of cell c based on DL RS for cell c in transmission occasion i as

[0086] PPRACH,b,f,c (i) =min {PCMAX,f,c (i) , PPRACH,target,f,c+PLb,f,c} [dBm] ,

[0087] where

[0088] -PCMAX,f,c (i) is the UE configured maximum output power defined in [8-1, TS 38.101-1] , [8-2, TS 38.101-2] , [8-3, TS 38.101-3] and [8-5, TS 38.101-5] for carrier f of cell c

[0089] within transmission occasion i,

[0090] -PPRACH,target,f,c is the PRACH target reception power

[0091] PREAMBLE_RECEIVED_TARGET_POWER provided by higher layers [11, TS 38.321] for the active UL BWP b of carrier f of cell c, and

[0092] -PLb,f,c is a pathloss for the active UL BWP b of carrier f based on the DL RS associated with the PRACH transmission on the active DL BWP of cell c and calculated by the UE in dB as referenceSignalPower –higher layer filtered RSRP in dBm, where RSRP is defined in [7, TS 38.215] and the higher layer filter configuration is defined in [12, TS 38.331] . If the active DL BWP is the initial DL BWP and for SS / PBCH block and CORESET multiplexing pattern 2 or 3 as described in clause 13, or for a non-serving cell, the UE determines PLb,f,c based on the SS / PBCH block associated with the PRACH transmission.

[0093] The PRACH target reception power PPRACH,target,f,c may be determined as specified in TS 38.321 (v18.2.0) :

[0094] > set PREAMBLE_RECEIVED_TARGET_POWER to preambleReceivedTargetPower+DELTA_PREAMBLE+(PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER–1) ×PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_STEP.

[0095] The parameter “PREAMBLE_RECEIVED_TARGET_POWER” represennts PRACH target reception power PPRACH,target,f,c. The parameter “preambleReceivedTargetPower” may be obtained from the WUS configuration, “SIB1-RequestConfig” IE. The power ramping step “PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_STEP” may be obtained from “powerRampingStep” in the WUS configuration, “SIB1-RequestConfig” IE. “DELTA-PREAMBLE” is a power offset related to the format of preamble of the PRACH. The counter “PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER” is set to be 1 for an initial transmission, and would be incremented by one for each retransmission.

[0096] As specified in 3GPP TS 38.213 (v18.3.0) , the pathloss PLb,f,c may be calculated as referenceSignalPower –higher layer filtered RSRP. “ReferenceSignalPower” is determined by “ss-PBCH-BlockPower” and “powerControlOffsetSS” based on the SSB or CSI-RS associated with PRACH. The “ss-PBCH-BlockPower” can be obtained from the parameter “ss-PBCH-BlockPower” in the WUS configuration, “SIB1-RequestConfig” IE. The higher layer filtered RSRP is the RSRP measured when sending the PRACH.

[0097] Similar as a legacy power control for PRACH transmission, e.g., as specified in 3GPP TS 38.213 and 38.321, a UE will transmit a WUS via PRACH (e.g., Msg1) with an initial power, e.g., x dBm power, at first time. If the PRACH transmission fails at Msg2 or Msg4, PRACH retransmission is applied. That is, the UE will trigger Msg1 retransmission. A maximum number of Msg1 retransmissions is defined by a parameter “preambleTransMax” (parameter proposed to be a part of WUS configuration) . If a retransmission of Msg1 occurs, the power of each retransmission will increase by the step of power ramping defined by “powerRampingStep” (parameter proposed to be a part of WUS configuration) . Retransmission of Msg1 occurs until the UE reaches the maximum power or the maximum number of retransmissions “preambleTransMax” is reached.

[0098] FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary procedure of uplink control for wake up signal transmission based on a legacy PRACH transmission. A UE may receive synchronization signal block (SSB) from Cell A as shown at 312, and then receive WUS configuration, e.g., via SIB1 or SIB x (x=2, or 3, …) from the Cell A as shown at 314. According to the WUS configuration, the UE may transmit a UL WUS as Msg1 as shown at 316, and then wait to receive a response, e.g., a RAR or Msg2. At 318, the UE fails to receive a response or Msg2 during a time window (e.g., RAR window) , for example, because a corresponding network node does not receive Msg1 or the UE is not able to decode Msg2 successfully. Then, the UE may determine that the first attempt of Msg1 (or WUS) fails and try to retransmit Msg1 (or WUS) as shown at 322. Power ramp-up is used by the UE. Through a power control procedure as described above, the retransmission power of Msg1 will be increased by a step of power ramping defined by parameter “powerRampingStep” in the WUS configuration. If the uplink WUS is transmission is successful, the UE may receive a response or Msg2 during the next RAR window as shown at 324, and receive an OD-SIB1 as shown at 326.

[0099] After receiving the OD-SIB1, the UE may initiate a random access procedure to perform RRC connection establishment / resume on a NES cell. The UE would start an initial random access procedure. Currently, an agreement is that it is not supported to combine on-demand SIB1 request with an initial access to perform RRC connection establishment / resume on a NES cell. In other words, if PRACH UL power modifications are performed by the UE during potential UL WUS retransmissions, they cannot be used to optimize the upcoming initial access random access procedure. The UE has to start a PRACH procedure from scratch. Therefore, the UE may transmit PRACH for the initial random access with an initial UL power (e.g., x dBm power) , which may result in a RACH failure, e.g., as happened during the first attempt of WUS. As such, starting the PRACH procedure from scratch would cause unnecessary PRACH retransmissions.

[0100] To at least partially tackle this problem, there is proposed a solution to enables a UE to utilize previous information related to power control from PRACH transmission or attempts for OD-SIB1  operation, to optimize an initial random access to a NES cell. The initial random access may be benefit from a latest status of uplink power control performed for the OD-SIB1 operation, especially the transmission of WUS, so as to avoid unnecessary PRACH retransmissions.

[0101] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a UE may obtain configuration information related to power control for transmission of a wake up signal to a first network node (e.g., gNB of a NES cell) supporting an on-demand system information block mode. The UE may receive the configuration information in wake up signal configuration (e.g., WUS configuration) , from a second network node (e.g., a gNB of a Cell A) or from the first network node. For example, the configuration information may be received via a system information block (e.g., SIB1 or SIBx) or a message for radio resource control (RRC) release for the UE.

[0102] Then, the UE may transmit a wake up signal to the first network node to request an on-demand system information block. A power control for the transmission of the wake up signal may be performed according to the configuration information. In case that an attempt of transmission of the wake up signal fails, the UE may adjust transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node based on the configuration information. The wake up signal may be transmitted through a PRACH transmission procedure. In this regard, the transmission power may be ramped up based on a power ramping step. Then, the UE retransmits the wake up signal to the first network node with the adjusted transmission power. The transmission power may be adjusted through a power control loop until the wake up signal is transmitted to the first network node successfully, or until a maximum power or a maximum number of retransmissions is reached.

[0103] If the wake up signal is transmitted to the first network node successfully, information related to a status of power control used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node successfully may be stored in the UE. For example, the UE may store the information in response to a receipt of an indication indicating that the transmission of the wake up signal to the first network node is successful. the indication may be a random access response (Msg2, or RAR) from the first network node.

[0104] In some embodiments, the information related to the status of power control for transmitting the wake up signal may comprise transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node successfully. For example, the stored information of the transmission power may be the latest value of PPRACH,b,f,c (i) used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission.

[0105] In some embodiments, the information related to the status of power control for transmitting the wake up signal may comprise a number of steps applied for adjusting transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal. For example, the stored information of the number of steps may  be the latest value of PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission.

[0106] In some embodiments, the information related to the status of power control for transmitting the wake up signal may comprise a power ramping step applied for adjusting transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal. For example, the stored information of the power ramping step may be the latest value of PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_STEP used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission. A UE can determine how much power adjustment is used by the UE to succeed a PRACH transmission based on the power ramping step, e.g., power adjustment = the power ramping step *the number of steps (e.g., PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER) applied for power adjustment counter. As such, the UE can derive the last transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal successfully to the first network node.

[0107] Then, the UE may perform an initial random access to the first network node based on the stored information. In this regard, the UE may maintain the status of power control to initiate an initial random access based on the stored information. In some embodiments, the UE may transmit a first message (e.g., Msg1) for a next RACH procedure after the PRACH transmission for WUS with a transmission power used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission. For example, the transmission power for Msg1 may be set to the latest value of PPRACH,b,f,c (i) used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission. In another example, the transmission power for Msg1 may be determined based on the latest value of PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission. It should be appreciated that the initial random access may be performed further based on other information, such as configurations for initial random access obtained from the first network node.

[0108] In some embodiments, the UE may start an adjustment of transmission power for the initial random access from the transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal successfully. For example, the UE may use the latest value of PPRACH,b,f,c (i) which was used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission, as a start point for the adjustment of the transmission power for Msg1. In another example, the UE may use the latest value of PREAMBLE_POWER_RAMPING_COUNTER which was used for the successful WUS or PRACH transmission, as a start point for the adjustment of the transmission power for Msg1.

[0109] In some embodiments, the UE may determine how to or whether to maintain the status of power control based on a validity of the stored information related to the status of power control and / or one or more rules. A network node, e.g., gNB of Cell A or NES cell, may communicate with the UE the validity and these rules. In this regard, the UE may receive one or more indications indicating a validity of the stored information and / or one or more rules for maintaining the status of  power control. For example, the one or more indications may be transmitted to UE together with or separate from a WUS configuration. When the UE initiates a random access procedure, it may determine whether to maintain the status of power control for a latest successful UL WUS or PRACH transmission, according to validity of the stored information and / or the one or more rules.

[0110] In an example, the network node may provide a time window or time duration to the UE. The stored information related to the status of power control may be valid during the time window or time duration. The time window or time duration may start after a latest UL WUS transmission that succeed. If the UE initiates a PRACH for the initial random access within this time window or time duration, the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission can be maintained. Otherwise, if the UE initiates a PRACH for the initial random access beyond this time window or time duration, the stored information may be invalid, and then the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission is not to be maintained, and the UE may start the initial random access from scratch.

[0111] In an example, the network node may provide a threshold for change in path loss to the UE. If a change in path loss between the initial random access and the latest UL WUS transmission that succeed, e.g., calculated as Δpath loss = PLb′,f′,c′ –PLb,f,c, is less than or equal to the threshold, stored information related to the status of power control may be valid. Then, the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission can be maintained. PLb′,f′,c′ may be a path loss at a time when the initial random access is to be initiated, and PLb,f,c may be a path loss at a time when the wake up signal (WUS) is transmitted successfully. Otherwise, if the change in path loss is more than the threshold, the stored information may be invalid, and then the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission is not to be maintained, and the UE may start the initial random access from scratch.

[0112] In an example, the network node may provide an indication to maintain the status of power control to the UE. When the UE receives this indication, the UE may compare parameters related to transmission power for WUS which are obtained in the WUS configuration, against corresponding parameters related to transmission power provided in the OD-SIB1 which is received during the latest WUS transmission. For example, the parameters may comprise one or more of ss-PBCH-BlockPower, preambleReceivedTargetPower, powerRampingStep, powerRampingStep, and any other parameters related to transmission power. If values of corresponding parameters are different, the indication is set to be false, and the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission is not to be maintained. Then, the UE may start the initial random access from scratch. If values of corresponding parameters are same to each other, the indication is set to be true, and the status of power control for the latest UL WUS transmission may be maintained.

[0113] In some embodiments, a combination of the above rules can be applied for determining how to or whether to maintain the status of power control. Based on these rules, the UE may benefit from the latest status of power control for the successful UL WUS transmission more effectively.

[0114] Hereinafter, the solution of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 4 to 11.

[0115] FIG. 4 is a signaling diagram illustrating an exemplary enhanced random access procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 4, the process may involve a first network node 401 (such as gNB1 of a NES cell, shown in FIG. 1 and scenario 1a of FIG. 2) and a second network node 402 (such as gNB2 of a Cell A, shown in FIG. 1 and scenario 1a of FIG. 2) , and a UE 403 (such UE1, shown in FIG. 1 and scenario 1a of FIG. 2) .

[0116] At step 412, UE 403 receives SSB and SIB1 from the second network node 401 of a Cell A. The second network node 401 broadcasts the SSB and SIB1 periodically.

[0117] At step 414, the UE 403 camps on Cell A.

[0118] At step 416, the UE 403 obtains WUS configuration from the second network node 402. In an example, the WUS configuration may be transmitted in a SIBx (x=2, 3, …) from the second network node 430. The WUS configuration contains configuration information for UL Power control for WUS transmission in one or more NES cells, for example, Prach-ConfigurationIndex, msg1-FDM, msg1-FrequencyStart, preambleReceivedTargetPower, preambleTransMax, powerRampingStep, ra-ResponseWindow, ssb-perRACH-Occasion, etc., as shown in Tabe 1. The WUS configuration may further contain indications about one or more rules to maintain UL power control for WUS or PRACH transmission. For example, the indications may comprise an indication of a length of a time window.

[0119] At step 418, the UE 403 re-selects a NES cell. Then, the UE 403 tries to switch from Cell A to the NES cell and camp on the first network node 420. As shown at step 422, the UE may transmit a wake up signal (UL WUS) towards the first network node 420 according to the WUS configuration received at step 416. Accordingly, the UE may apply UL power control of PRACH transmission in the WUS transmission, e.g., as specified in 3GPP TS 38.213 and TS 38.321.

[0120] If PRACH transmission fails (e.g., no response received by the UE 403 from the first network node 401) , the UE 403 adjusts UL power control for PRACH transmission based on PRACH configuration in the WUS configuration, as shown at step 424. Then, at step 426, the UE 403 retransmits UL WUS or Msg1 of PRACH procedure with the adjusted UL transmission power.

[0121] At step 428, the UE 403 receives a RAR response from the first network node. The RAR response may comprise timing advance (TA) command for subsequence transmission in the NES cell. It means that the WUS is transmitted to the first network node 401 successfully.

[0122] At step 432, the UE 403 receives an OD-SIB1 from the first network node 401. As such, the OD-SIB1 operation 410 for the NES cell is performed successfully.

[0123] At step 434, the UE 403 is intended to initiate an initial random access to the first network node 401. The UE 403 checks if conditions and / or rules allow the UE to maintain the latest UL power control, i.e., maintain a status of power control used for the latest UL WUS or PRACH transmission that succeeded, based on the indication about one or more rules to maintain UL power control which is received in WUS configuration at step 416.

[0124] If it is determined the conditions and / or rules allow the UE to maintain the latest UL power control, the UE 403 can apply the latest status of power control used for the UL WUS or PRACH transmission, e.g., by transmitting a PRACH (e.g., Msg1) to the first network node 401 with a transmission power of the latest UL WUS or PRACH transmission, as shown at step 436. Unnecessary PRACH retransmissions for the initial random access can be avoided. Otherwise, if it is determined the conditions and / or rules do not allow the UE to maintain the latest UL power control, the UE 403 can perform the initial random access from the scratch, without maintaining the latest status of power. As such, the UE is enabled to utilize information from the prior OD-SIB1 operation 410 to enhance an initial random access to the NES cell.

[0125] FIG. 5 illustrates an exemplary procedure for enhancing a random access based on a time window. The OD-SIB1 operation 510 is similar as the OD-SIB1 operation 410. The delivery of SSB 512, WUS configuration 516, Msg1 522, retransmission of Msg1 526, RAR response 528, and OD-SIB1 532 between a UE and radio access networks (e.g., a Cell A and a NES cell) can be performed in a similar manner as steps 412, 416, 422, 426, 428, and 432 shown in FIG. 4. A time window 538 may start after a receipt of the OD-SIB1 from a NES cell. An indication of a length of the time window may be communicated to the UE via the WUS configuration 516. When the UE initiates a PRACH for an initial random access to the NES cell, it can determine whether the time window elapses or not, e.g., based on the indication of the length of a time window. If the time window elapses, the UE would perform the initial random access procedure without utilizing information of power control from the OD-SIB1 operation 510.

[0126] It should be understood that, the processes of FIGs. 4 and 5 are only described as exemplary application scenarios, the proposed schemes of the present disclosure may be applied in any suitable scenarios.

[0127] FIG. 6 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at a terminal device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The terminal device may be a UE, such as UE 403.

[0128] At block 610, the terminal device obtains configuration information related to power control for transmission of a wake up signal to a first network node (e.g., gNB of a NES cell) . The first network node would support an on-demand system information block mode, such OD-SIB1 mode. The configuration information may be received in WUS configuration from a second network node (e.g., a gNB of a Cell A) or the first network node. The WUS configuration may be carried in a system information block, e.g., a SIB1 or SIBx from a Cell A, a RRC release message from a Cell A, or a SIBx from another NES cell.

[0129] At block 620, the terminal device transmits a wake up signal to the first network node to request an on-demand system information block. The transmission of the wake up signal may be performed through a PRACH, for example, via a Msg1. Power control for the transmission of the wake up signal may be performed according to the configuration information obtained at block 610. In this regard, if the transmission of the wake up signal fails, the terminal device may adjust transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal based on the configuration information, and retransmit the wake up signal with an adjusted transmission power. In this power control, a power ramp-up loop for PRACH may be executed, till the wake up signal (or Msg1) is transmitted successfully.

[0130] At block 630, the terminal device stores information related to a status of power control used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node successfully. The information may be stored in response to a receipt of an indication indicating that the transmission of the wake up signal is successful. For example, the terminal device may determine that the transmission of the wake up signal is successful when it receives a RAR response. The stored information may comprise at least one of: transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node successfully; a number of steps applied for adjusting transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal; or a power ramping step applied for adjusting transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal.

[0131] At block 640, the terminal device performs an initial random access to the first network node based on the stored information. As such, the terminal device is enabled to utilize the stored information to enhance a RACH procedure for the initial random access. In this regard, the status of power control used for transmitting the wake up signal to the first network node successfully may be maintained and applied to the initial random access. For example, the terminal device may transmit a first message (e.g., Msg1) for the initial random access to the first network node with a transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal successfully. Alternatively or additionally, the  terminal device may start an adjustment of transmission power for the initial random access from the transmission power used for transmitting the wake up signal successfully. Some other configurations for the initial random access obtained from the first network node (e.g., via the OD-SIB1 received in response to the wake up signal) may also be used by the terminal device to perform the initial random access.

[0132] In some embodiments, the terminal device may determine whether to maintain the status of power control based on the stored information or not, according to a validity of the stored information and / or one or more rules. The rules maybe set and provided by the second network node. For example, the configuration information received at block 610 may comprise one or more indications indicating the validity of the stored information and / or one or more such rules. The one or more indications may comprise at least one of, a first indication indicating a time window, during which the stored information is valid; a second indication indicating a threshold for change in path loss between the initial random access and successful transmission of the wake up signal, below which the stored information is valid; or a third indication to maintain the status of power control. FIGs. 7 to 9 illustrate flow charts depicting exemplary procedures for determining whether to maintain uplink power control status according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At least one of block 700 of FIG. 7, block 800 of FIG. 8, and block 900 of FIG. 9 may be implemented as or comprised in block 640 of FIG. 6.

[0133] FIG. 7 shows an exemplary procedure for determining whether to maintain uplink power control status, based on an indication of a time window. Blocks 710 and 720 may be implemented as or comprised in block 640 of FIG. 6. The time window may be indicated in the configuration information (e.g., WUS configuration) which is received from the second network node at block 610. At block 710, the terminal device may start the time window after the wake up signal is transmitted successfully. In an example, a timer for the time window may be started when a RAR response or an OD-SIB1 is received from the first network node in response to the wake up signal. At block 720, the terminal device may determine to maintain the status of power control based on the stored information if the initial random access to the first network node is initiated within the time window. The consideration of this embodiment is that, a transmission condition between the terminal device and the first network node generally would not undergo a significant change that affects transmission during an appropriate length of time window, and accordingly the power control of the successful transmission of the wake up signal is likely to be applicable to the initial random access.

[0134] FIG. 8 shows an exemplary procedure for determining whether to maintain uplink power control status, based on a second indication of a threshold for change in path loss. Blocks 810 and 820 may be implemented as or comprised in block 640 of FIG. 6. The threshold may be indicated in  the configuration information (e.g., WUS configuration) which is received from the second network node at block 610. At block 810, the terminal device may determine a change between a first path loss at a time when the initial random access is to be initiated and a second path loss at a time when the wake up signal is transmitted successfully. For example, the first path loss may be determined based on a measurement of a latest SSB from the first network. The second path loss may be determined in the power control based on SSB measurement for the successful transmission of the wake up signal, and stored as a part of the information related to the status of the power control. At block 820, the terminal device may determine to maintain the status of power control based on the stored information if the determined change is less than or equal to the threshold for change in path loss. The consideration of this embodiment is that, a change in transmission condition between the terminal device and the first network node is usually associated with a change in path loss. In case that a change in path loss does not go beyond a threshold, the transmission condition generally would not undergo a significant change that affects the transmission. Accordingly the power control of the successful transmission of the wake up signal is likely to be applicable to the initial random access.

[0135] FIG. 9 shows an exemplary procedure for determining whether to maintain uplink power control status, based on a third indication to maintain the status of power control. Blocks 910, 920, and 930 may be implemented as or comprised in block 640 of FIG. 6. The third indication may be comprised in the configuration information (e.g., WUS configuration) which is received from the second network node at block 610. At block 910, the terminal device may obtain a first set of values of parameters related to transmission power of the wake up signal in the configuration information. For example, the first set of value may comprise values of parameters contained in Table 1, such as one or more of ss-PBCH-BlockPower, preambleReceivedTargetPower, powerRampingStep, powerRampingStep, and any other parameters related to transmission power. At block 920, the terminal device may receive a second set of values of corresponding parameters in the on-demand system information block from the first network node. The corresponding parameters may be same as the parameters of the first set of values, or may be a part of the parameters of the first set of values. At block 930, the terminal device may determine to set the third indication to be false to not maintain the status of power control, if the first set of values of parameters are different from the second set of values of the corresponding parameters. The terminal device may determine to set the third indication to be true to maintain the status of power control, if the first set of values of parameters are same as the second set of values of the corresponding parameters. The consideration of this embodiment is that, a power control for transmission between the terminal device and the first network node is associated with these parameters related to transmission power. In case that these parameters related to transmission power changed, the power control of the successful transmission of the wake up signal is not applicable to the initial random access any more.

[0136] FIG. 10 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at a network node according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The network node may be a base station (e.g., gNB) , such as the second network node 402.

[0137] At block 1010, the network node transmit to a terminal device (e.g., a UE, such as UE 401) , one or more indications indicating at least one of: a validity of information related to a status of power control, or one or more rules for maintaining a status of power control to perform an initial random access to a first network node (e.g., a gNB, such as the first network node 401) which supports an on-demand system information block mode. The status of power control indicates information of power control used for transmitting a wake up signal from the UE to the first network node successfully.

[0138] In some embodiments, the one or more indications may comprise at least one of, a first indication indicating a time window, during which the stored information is valid, a second indication indicating a threshold for change in path loss between the initial random access and successful transmission of the wake up signal, below which the stored information is valid; or a third indication to maintain the status of power control. The one or more indications are transmitted in wake up signal configuration (e.g., WUS configuration) for transmission of a wake up signal from the terminal device to the first network node.

[0139] FIG. 11 shows, by way of example, a block diagram of an apparatus 10, that may be embodied in / as the terminal device, or the network node. The apparatus 10 comprises, for example, at least one processor 12 and at least one memory 14 storing instructions 15 that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the apparatus 10 at least to perform the method or methods as disclosed herein, and any of the embodiments thereof. In an example, the at least one memory and the instructions (e.g. a computer program code, software) , are configured, with the at least one processor, to cause the apparatus 10 to perform the method or methods as disclosed herein, and any of the embodiments thereof.

[0140] A processor 12 may comprise circuitry, or be constituted as circuitry or circuitries, the circuitry or circuitries being configured to perform phases of methods in accordance with example embodiments described herein. As used in this application, the term ācircuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following: (a) hardware-only circuit implementations, such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry, and (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as, as applicable: (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a user equipment, to perform various functions) and (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a  microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0141] The memory 14 may be implemented using any suitable data storage technology. The memory may comprise a database for storing data. The memory 14 may be at least in part external to apparatus 10 but accessible to apparatus 10.

[0142] The instructions 15 may be comprised in a computer readable medium or a non-transitory computer readable medium. A term non-transitory, as used herein, is a limitation of the medium itself (i.e. tangible, not a signal) as opposed to a limitation on data storage persistency (e.g. random access memory, RAM, vs. read only memory, ROM) .

[0143] For example, the apparatus 10 is a terminal device, such as the UE of FIG. 4 or FIG. 6. As another example, the apparatus is comprised in such a terminal device, e.g. as a chipset configured to control the terminal device. The apparatus 10 may be caused or configured to perform at least the method of Fig. 6 and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0144] As another example, the apparatus 10 is a network node, e.g. the network node of FIG. 4 or FIG. 10. In another embodiment, the apparatus is comprised in such a network node, e.g. as a chipset configured to control the network node. The apparatus 10 may be caused or configured to perform at least the method of Fig. 10 and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0145] The apparatus may comprise one or more entities of any of protocol layers, such as a MAC entity, an RRC entity, an RLC entity, a PDCP entity or a PHY entity. In some embodiments, the entity is configured to perform at least the method of Fig. 6 or Fig. 10, and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0146] The apparatus 10 comprises a radio interface 16. The radio interface 16 may provide the apparatus 10 with communication capabilities. The radio interface 16 may comprise a receiver configured to receive information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The radio interface 16 may comprise a transmitter configured to transmit information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The receiver may comprise more than one receiver.  The transmitter may comprise more than one transmitter. The radio interface 16 may comprise a transceiver configured to receive and transmit information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The transceiver may comprise more than one transceiver.

[0147] The apparatus 10 may comprise a user interface 18 comprising, for example, at least one of a keypad, a microphone, a touch display, a display, a speaker, etc. The user interface 18 may be used to control the apparatus by the user. The user interface 18 may be external to the apparatus 10. For example, the apparatus 10 may be connected to another device, such as a computer, either via wireless or wired connection, and the apparatus 10 is controlled by the user via the computer.

[0148] In an embodiment, at least some of the processes described herein may be carried out by an apparatus comprising means for carrying out at least some of the described processes. Means for performing method steps as disclosed herein may include software and / or hardware components of the apparatus 10. For example, the at least one processor 12, the memory 14, and the computer program code form means for carrying out the method or methods as disclosed herein, and any of the embodiments thereof. As used herein the term “means” is to be construed in singular form, i.e. referring to a single element, or in plural form, i.e. referring to a combination of single elements. Therefore, terminology “means for [performing A, B, C] ” , is to be interpreted to cover an apparatus in which there is only one means for performing A, B and C, or where there are separate means for performing A, B and C, or partially or fully overlapping means for performing A, B, C. Further, terminology “means for performing A, means for performing B, means for performing C” is to be interpreted to cover an apparatus in which there is only one means for performing A, B and C, or where there are separate means for performing A, B and C, or partially or fully overlapping means for performing A, B, C.

[0149] It should be appreciated that at least some aspects of the exemplary embodiments of the disclosures may be embodied in computer-executable instructions, such as in one or more program modules, executed by one or more computers or other devices. Generally, program modules include routines, programs, objects, components, data structures, etc. that perform particular tasks or implement particular abstract data types when executed by a processor in a computer or other device. The computer executable instructions may be stored on a computer readable medium, for example, non-transitory computer readable medium, such as a hard disk, optical disk, removable storage media, solid state memory, RAM, etc. As will be appreciated by one of skills in the art, the function of the program modules may be combined or distributed as desired in various embodiments. In addition, the function may be embodied in whole or in part in firmware or hardware equivalents such as integrated circuits, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) , and the like.

[0150] Further, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.
