Description

Gravity-Fed Firearm Magazine Speed loaderField of the Invention

[0001] The present disclosure relates to ammunition handling devices, and more specifically to a purely gravity-fed apparatus for reliably aligning and loading rimmed cartridges into a firearm magazine efficiently and without manual manipulation or powered mechanisms. Background of the Invention

[0002] In the field of firearm accessories and ammunition handling, magazine speed loaders have been developed to assist users in efficiently inserting cartridges into firearm magazines. Manual loading of cartridges into spring-loaded magazines can be physically demanding and time-consuming, particularly with high-capacity magazines or in situations requiring repetitive loading. To address these issues, numerous devices have been proposed that aim to streamline or mechanise the loading process, typically by aligning multiple cartridges and transferring them into the magazine with reduced manual effort.

[0003] US 2014 / 0033592 A1 (Fiorucci Dana Joseph), published on 6 February 2014, discloses a gun magazine speed loader that enables cartridges to be pressed into a magazine in a single motion. The loader includes a body that holds multiple cartridges in parallel alignment and incorporates a pushrod for simultaneously pressing the cartridges into the magazine’s feeding end.

[0004] US 2019 / 0017762 A1 (Vista Outdoor Operations LLC), published on 17 January 2019, describes a magazine loader specifically adapted for loading a batch of rimmed cartridges into a tubular rifle magazine. The loader includes a hopper and an elongate body defining a feed passageway that extends to a magazine-receiving portion. Along this passageway are a series of orienting portions that progressively reorient the cartridges into a tip-forward or rim-forward configuration for alignment with the tubular magazine. The loader includes features such as a moveable gate, adjustable cartridge quantity selector, and a three-sided orienting channel shaped tocontrol cartridge alignment and quantity. A selected number of cartridges, determined using the quantity selector, are allowed to proceed along the feed path.

[0005] US 2023 / 0358492 A1 (Tippmann Arms Company LLC), published on 9 November 2023, discloses a speed loader comprising a hopper for receiving a bulk quantity of loose ammunition and a track body defining a single-file passageway leading to a magazine receiving portion. Rounds are from the hopper into the passageway, where they are progressively aligned in single file with their rim portions supported by internal guide shelves. A crank-operated round loading assembly is configured to load rounds sequentially from the passageway into the magazine. Rotation of the crank handle actuates a gear train connected to a plunger and pusher mechanism: the plunger depresses the follower or round stack in the magazine to create space, while the pusher inserts the next round. Once the round is loaded, a spring-biased mechanism retracts the pusher, readying the system for the next cycle. A latch mechanism secures the magazine during loading, and the loader may incorporate translucent markings and fluid pads for cleaning rounds. The system is configured for progressive mechanical insertion of individual rounds into a detachable magazine through actuation of a manually driven crank and gear assembly.

[0006] US 2003 / 0046854 A1 (Urchek), published on 13 March 2003, discloses a cartridge clip loading apparatus comprising an elongated cartridge reservoir with a wishbone cross-section that defines an upper holding chamber for randomly oriented cartridges and a lower feed channel for arranging them side-by-side in a row. Cartridges move through a bottom opening into the feed channel, where they are suspended in upright orientation by their rims resting on longitudinal ribs. A bridge platform separates the holding chamber from a downstream portion of the feed channel, allowing rims to pass beneath while promoting cartridge tilting towards a discharge opening. A clip holder fixed to the end of the feed channel receives a cartridge clip such that cartridges slide into it one by one. A detent ball mechanism temporarily blocks discharge until the clip is fully inserted, at which point the mechanism is disengaged, allowing cartridges to enter the clip.Summary of the Disclosure

[0007] A gravity-fed magazine speed loader is provided for transferring rimmed cartridges from a bulk hopper into a firearm magazine in a controlled manner. The speed loader comprises a hopper with an outlet that funnels into an elongate constriction entrance aligned along a feeding channel. As cartridges are loaded into the hopper, the constriction entrance engages their rims to guide them into adjacent and parallel alignment within the feeding channel.

[0008] The feeding channel narrows at one end to cause the cartridges to tip by their bullet ends into a longitudinal alignment. This alignment is maintained as the cartridges exit through an outlet equipped with a connector that interfaces with a separable magazine adapter. The adapter defines a channel aligned with the outlet and includes a magazine attachment configured for engagement with a spring-loaded magazine.

[0009] At the point of loading, the adapter defines a loading interface having the channel angled towards a backstop adjacent an entrance to the magazine. The entrance is wider than the length of the cartridges, allowing their bullet ends to disengage from the channel and pivot into adjacent parallel alignment. As the cartridges exit the channel in longitudinal alignment and contact the backstop, they pivot and fall under gravity into the spring-loaded containment channel of the magazine. This arrangement enables reliable cartridge alignment and passive transfer without the need for manual feeding or powered assistance. The configuration also allows controlled insertion of a quantity of cartridges proportionate to the depth of retraction of the compression spring within the magazine. The magazine adapter is separable from the main body and configured to interface with different magazine types, allowing a common loader unit to be used with a range of magazine-specific adapters.

[0010] The feeding channel may be configured with a holding section proximate the entrance in which cartridges are retained in adjacent and parallel alignment, and an orientating section disposed further along the channel where the geometry narrows to induce the cartridges to tip. A common rim channel may connect the holding andorientating sections, allowing the rims of the cartridges to travel freely between the two zones while maintaining control over their lateral position. This configuration supports a smooth and progressive transition from rim-guided retention to bullet-end tipping, thereby improving the consistency of longitudinal alignment prior to magazine entry.

[0011] In some examples, the feeding channel may include a curved floor that converges towards the rim channel along the transition from the holding section to the orientating section. This curvature may assist in guiding the cartridges smoothly into the desired tipping behaviour while also helping to manage cartridge flow dynamics, reducing the risk of jamming or misalignment within the channel.

[0012] The speed loader may include a window along the curved portion of the floor to provide visual access to the cartridge alignment process. This may allow an operator to verify correct feeding and identify any blockages or flow interruptions without needing to disassemble the loader, thereby facilitating faster troubleshooting and improved usability during operation.

[0013] To facilitate manufacturing and enable ease of cleaning or cartridge retrieval, the loader may be constructed from bifurcated portions joined along a longitudinal plane. These portions may be separable and configured to clip together, allowing the user to open and reassemble the unit as needed without tools or fasteners.

[0014] In a further refinement, the bifurcated housing portions may be held together using integrally moulded plastic clips. This may reduce manufacturing complexity and material costs, particularly where plastic injection moulding is used, and may support a robust, snap-fit enclosure suitable for repeated use in field conditions.

[0015] A method of loading rimmed cartridges into a spring-loaded magazine may include providing a gravity-fed magazine speed loader comprising a hopper with an outlet funnelled to an elongate constriction entrance aligned along a feeding channel. Loose rimmed cartridges introduced into the hopper may be guided such that their rims are engaged by the constriction entrance, aligning the cartridges in adjacent and parallel alignment within the feeding channel.

[0016] The method may further include guiding the cartridges along the feeding channel towards a tapered end where the cartridges tip by their bullet ends into a longitudinal alignment. The longitudinally aligned cartridges may then be delivered to an outlet, where a separable magazine adapter is attached. This adapter may define a channel that continues the longitudinal alignment and is angled toward a backstop adjacent an entrance that is wider than the length of the cartridges.

[0017] As cartridges exit the channel, they may contact the backstop and pivot, with the wider entrance allowing their bullet ends to disengage from the channel. The cartridges may then fall under gravity into the spring-loaded containment channel of a connected magazine, entering in adjacent and parallel alignment as the compression spring within the magazine is retracted. This process enables a controlled and repeatable insertion of cartridges, proportionate to the spring’s degree of retraction, without the need for powered assistance or manual manipulation of individual rounds.

[0018] Other aspects of the invention are also disclosed.Brief Description of the Drawings

[0026] The magazine speed loader 100 comprises a hopper 101 that funnels towards an elongate constriction entrance 102 aligned along a feeding channel 103. As shownin Figure 9, the hopper 101 is configured to receive loose rimmed cartridges 104 through a wide opening 105, and, when agitated, guides them towards the constriction entrance 102. The constriction entrance 102 engages the rims 106 of the cartridge casings 107 so that the cartridges 104 are aligned in adjacent and parallel arrangement within the feeding channel 103, as illustrated in Figure 9. The cartridges 104 are of the rimmed type, wherein the proximal rims 106 have a diameter greater than the remainder of the casing 107.

[0027] Referring to Figure 5, the feeding channel 103 may include a rim channel 108 formed above the constriction entrance 102 and a casing channel 109 formed below it. The casing channel 109 is narrower than the rim channel 108, enabling the constriction entrance 102 to retain the larger diameter rims 106 and guide the cartridges 104 into adjacent, side-by-side alignment. The feeding channel 103 narrows away from the entrance 102, forming an orienting section that causes the cartridges 104 to tip forward under gravity by their bullet ends 110, thereby achieving longitudinal alignment as shown in Figure 10.

[0028] When cartridges 104 are poured into the wide opening 105 and agitated, they descend through the constriction entrance 102 into the feeding channel 103 in adjacent, parallel arrangement. By tipping the loader 100, the cartridges 104 proceed along the narrowing section of the channel, where the bullets 110 contact an upwardly curved floor 111. This interaction promotes tipping of each cartridge 104 into longitudinal alignment within the channel 103. The loader 100 defines an outlet 112 from which the cartridges 104 emerge in this longitudinal orientation.

[0029] The feeding channel 103 may include a holding section 103A near the entrance 102, where the cartridges 104 are aligned side by side, and an orienting section 103B downstream, where the channel narrows to tip the cartridges 104 into alignment. The rim channel 108 provides a continuous guide between the holding section 103A and the orienting section 103B, facilitating smooth transition of the cartridges 104 as they progress along the channel. Specifically, Figure 5 shows a cross-section through the hopper 101 illustrating the rim channel 108, while Figures 6 and 7 depict crosssections along the orienting section 103B, highlighting the rim-guided path.

[0030] The curved floor 111 converges towards the rim channel 108 as the channel transitions from the holding section 103A to the orienting section 103B. At the distal end of the orienting section 103B, the casing channel 109 and rim channel 108 merge into a tubular outlet channel 113 having a circular cross-section, enabling smooth ejection of longitudinally aligned cartridges 104.

[0031] To assist the user, the speed loader 100 may include a window 114 for visual inspection or for applying lubricant. This may comprise a window 114A along the curved floor 111 , as well as additional viewing windows 114B along the orienting section 103B and 1 14C at the outlet channel 113, allowing continuous visual monitoring of the cartridges 104 from entrance 102 to outlet 112.

[0032] A connector 115 is defined at the outlet 112, allowing a separable magazine adapter 116 to be detachably mounted thereto, as shown in Figure 10. The adapter 116 defines a continuation channel 117 in longitudinal alignment with the outlet 112, receiving the cartridges 104 in their aligned orientation.

[0033] The adapter 116 includes a magazine attachment 118 configured for connection to a magazine 119. The attachment 118 defines a loading interface 120 that redirects the longitudinally aligned cartridges 104 into adjacent parallel alignment suitable for insertion into the magazine’s spring-loaded containment channel 121. The adapter 116 may include a further window 114D near the interface 120 for observing cartridge movement or for administering lubricant.

[0034] The magazine 119 incorporates a manual toggle 122 movable along the containment channel 121 to compress the internal compression spring. This enables the incoming cartridges 104 to be received under gravity as the spring is retracted. The loading interface 120 angles the channel 117 towards a backstop 125. As each cartridge 104 enters the interface 120, its casing 107 rear end abuts the backstop 125, and the wider entrance allows the bullet end 110 to disengage from the channel 117. This promotes controlled pivoting of the cartridge 104 so that it falls into the containment channel 121 in adjacent parallel alignment. The arrangement enables controlled insertion in proportion to the depth of spring retraction.

[0035] In the embodiment shown, the speed loader 100 is formed from bifurcated portions 123 that assemble along a longitudinal axis. These portions 123 may be secured using plastic clips 124, facilitating plastic injection moulding during manufacture and enabling straightforward assembly and disassembly.

[0036] The method of use and operation of the magazine speed loader 100 is straightforward and requires no manual feeding or powered assistance. Cartridges 104 are introduced through the wide opening 105 of the hopper 101 in a loose and random orientation. To encourage initial alignment, the user may agitate the loader 100 — by shaking, tapping, or gently rocking the assembly — causing the cartridges 104 to settle and descend toward the constriction entrance 102. The constriction entrance 102 acts on the larger-diameter rims 106 of the cartridges 104 to align them in adjacent and parallel arrangement within the feeding channel 103, as guided by the rim channel 108 and supported by the casing channel 109.

[0037] Once a sufficient number of cartridges 104 are retained in the holding section 103A of the feeding channel 103, the loader 100 may be inclined forward so that the cartridges 104 progress under gravity toward the orienting section 103B. As the feeding channel 103 narrows and the floor 111 curves upward, the bullet ends 110 of the cartridges 104 engage the curved floor 111 , prompting each cartridge to tip over by its bullet end and assume a longitudinal alignment within the channel 103. This transition is guided smoothly by the geometry of the rim channel 108, which continues into the outlet channel 113.

[0038] With the cartridges 104 now in longitudinal alignment and proceeding through the outlet 112, the separable magazine adapter 116 may be affixed to the connector 115. This alignment ensures that the cartridges 104 enter the internal channel 117 of the adapter 116 in a smooth, end-to-end orientation. Travelling in longitudinal alignment allows the cartridges 104 to move more reliably and with reduced resistance compared to adjacent parallel travel, significantly lowering the risk of jamming or misalignment. This orientation also facilitates a seamless transition between the feeding channel 103 and the adapter channel 117 without the risk of edges catching or interfering, thereby promoting consistent flow. The user may thenengage the magazine attachment 118 of the adapter 116 with a suitable magazine 119, which includes a spring-loaded containment channel 121.

[0039] Prior to cartridge insertion, the user actuates the manual toggle 122 along the containment channel 121 to retract the compression spring. The loader 100 and adapter 116 are then held at an incline to allow gravity-fed transfer of the cartridges 104 from the outlet 112 through the channel 117 of the adapter 116.

[0040] As each cartridge 104 exits the channel 117 in longitudinal alignment, the rear of the casing 107 contacts the backstop 125. The interface 120, having an entrance wider than the length of a cartridge 104, allows the bullet end 110 to clear the outlet path, enabling the cartridge 104 to pivot and fall cleanly into the containment channel 121 of the magazine 119 in adjacent parallel alignment. This arrangement ensures reliable engagement even when multiple cartridges are inserted consecutively.

[0041] The number of cartridges 104 introduced into the magazine 119 is naturally limited by the degree to which the spring has been retracted via the manual toggle 122, enabling the user to control the quantity of cartridges loaded in each operation. Visual confirmation of cartridge progression is provided through windows 114A, 114B, 114C, and 114D. These viewing ports also allow the optional application of lubricant to assist cartridge flow along the channel 103, adapter 116, and into the magazine 119.

[0042] The bifurcated construction of the speed loader 100 allows for straightforward disassembly for cleaning, inspection, or manufacture. The plastic clips 124 ensure secure closure during operation while allowing the user to separate the halves of the device when required.

[0043] This method enables fast, reliable and repeatable cartridge loading, particularly suitable for rimmed ammunition types, while minimising manual handling and supporting compatibility with various magazine formats through interchangeable adapters 116.
