AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication standards, such as 3GPP LTE and 5G NR, are limited to configuring only one Non-Zero Power (NZP) CSI-RS resource for SRS resource sets, which restricts the transmission of SRSs to 32 ports, hindering efficient utilization of up to 128 ports required for advanced MIMO operations.

Method used

Enhancements allowing configuration of multiple NZP CSI-RS resources (K > 1) for SRS resource sets, specifically for 'nonCodebook' and 'antennaSwitching' usages, enabling support for up to 128 downlink ports by associating a list of K = 2, 3, or 4 NZP CSI-RS resource IDs and defining minimum duration for precoding updates in aperiodic SRS transmissions.

Benefits of technology

Enables efficient transmission of SRSs using up to 128 ports, enhancing MIMO operations by improving channel estimation and scheduling in wireless communication systems, particularly in 5G NR networks.

[0014] The example embodiments may be further understood with reference to the following description and the related appended drawings, wherein like elements are provided with the same reference numerals. The example embodiments describe devices, systems and methods to provide an enhanced method of performing the transmission of Sounding Reference Signals (SRS) . In particular, the enhanced techniques described herein allows the transmission of SRSs using up to 128 ports.

[0015] The example embodiments are described with regard to a UE.However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to an accessory device and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with accessory devices. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any electronic component.

[0016] The example embodiments are also described with reference to a 5G New Radio (NR) network. However, the example embodiments may also be implemented in other types of networks, including but not limited to legacy networks (e.g., LTE networks) , future evolutions of the cellular protocol (e.g., 5G-advanced networks, 6G networks, etc. ) , or any other type of network.

[0017] The example embodiments provide new configuration information for the transmission of Sounding Reference Signals (SRS) . In particular, the enhanced techniques described herein allows the transmission of SRSs using up to 128 ports. More  than 1, e.g., K >1 Non-Zero Power (NZP) CSI-RS resources can be configured for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook. ” Note that K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources are used to support up to 128 downlink ports and that under current standards (TS38.214) , only one NZP CSI-RS resource can be configured. A new information element may be included in the configuration information that is a list of K =2, 3, 4 (K > 1) NZP CSI-RS resource IDs to be associated with the SRS resource set. In addition, a NZP CSI-RS resource set ID can be configured to be associated with the SRS resource set. Further, when aperiodic SRS are associated with aperiodic CSI-RS, a minimum duration, e.g., dmin, is defined within which the UE is not expected to update the precoding used for the associated SRS transmission. For antennaSwitching usage, SRS ports are ordered based on the following: the SRS-ResourceSet ID; then if the corresponding SRS-ResourceSet ID is the same, the SRS-Resource ID; and if the corresponding SRS-Resource ID and SRS-ResourceSet ID are the same, then the SRS port ID. In addition, grouping of SRS ports, SRS resources, and / or SRS resource sets may be used so that the base station (gNB) knows which ports are receiving ports. Each of these example embodiments will be described in greater detail below.

[0018] Fig. 1 shows an example network arrangement 100 according to various example embodiments. The example network arrangement 100 includes a UE 110. The UE 110 may be any type of electronic component that is configured to communicate via a network, e.g., mobile phones, tablet computers, desktop computers, smartphones, embedded devices, wearables, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, etc. An actual network arrangement may include any number of UEs being used by any number of users.  Thus, the example of one UE 110 is merely provided for illustrative purposes.

[0019] The UE 110 may be configured to communicate with one or more networks. In the example of the network arrangement 100, the network with which the UE 110 may wirelessly communicate is a 5G NR radio access network (RAN) 120. However, the UE 110 may also communicate with other types of networks (e.g., 5G cloud RAN, a next generation RAN (NG-RAN) , a legacy cellular network, etc. ) and the UE 110 may also communicate with networks over a wired connection. With regard to the example embodiments, the UE 110 may establish a connection with the 5G NR RAN 120. Therefore, the UE 110 may have a 5G NR chipset to communicate with the NR RAN 120.

[0020] The 5G NR RAN 120 may be portions of a cellular network that may be deployed by a network carrier (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. ) . The RAN 120 may include cells or base stations that are configured to send and receive traffic from UEs that are equipped with the appropriate cellular chip set. In this example, the 5G NR RAN 120 includes the gNB 120A and the gNB 120B. However, reference to a gNB is merely provided for illustrative purposes, any appropriate base station or cell may be deployed (e.g., Node Bs, eNodeBs, HeNBs, eNBs, gNBs, gNodeBs, macrocells, microcells, small cells, femtocells, etc. ) .

[0021] Any association procedure may be performed for the UE 110 to connect to the 5G NR RAN 120. For example, as discussed above, the 5G NR RAN 120 may be associated with a particular network carrier where the UE 110 and / or the user thereof has a contract and credential information (e.g., stored on a SIM card) . Upon detecting the presence of the 5G NR RAN 120, the UE  110 may transmit the corresponding credential information to associate with the 5G NR RAN 120. More specifically, the UE 110 may associate with a specific cell (e.g., gNB 120A) .

[0022] The network arrangement 100 also includes a cellular core network 130, the Internet 140, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) 150, and a network services backbone 160. The cellular core network 130 manages the traffic that flows between the cellular network and the Internet 140. The IMS 150 may be generally described as an architecture for delivering multimedia services to the UE 110 using the IP protocol. The IMS 150 may communicate with the cellular core network 130 and the Internet 140 to provide the multimedia services to the UE 110. The network services backbone 160 is in communication either directly or indirectly with the Internet 140 and the cellular core network 130. The network services backbone 160 may be generally described as a set of components (e.g., servers, network storage arrangements, etc. ) that implement a suite of services that may be used to extend the functionalities of the UE 110 in communication with the various networks.

[0023] Fig. 2 shows an example UE 110 according to various example embodiments. The UE 110 will be described with regard to the network arrangement 100 of Fig. 1. The UE 110 may represent any electronic device and may include a processor 205, a memory arrangement 210, a display device 215, an input / output (I / O) device 220, a transceiver 225, and other components 230. The other components 230 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a battery that provides a limited power supply, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the UE 110 to other electronic devices, sensors to detect conditions of the UE 110, etc.

[0024] The processor 205 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines for the UE 110. For example, the engines may include an CSI Reporting engine 235. The CSI Reporting Engine 235 may be configured to generate either a precoding matrix index (PMI) based CSI report or a non-PMI based CSI report. The CSI Reporting Engine 235 may then cause transceiver circuitry to transmit the PMI based report or non-PMI based report to the network node. The PMI based report and the non-PMI based report may both include at least two channel quality indicators (CQI) .

[0025] The engines may also include an SRS engine 240 for transmitting positioning signals to each of a plurality of positioning nodes based on a network configuration for the positioning signals. The positioning signals are estimated by the positioning nodes to provide the network with information so that the network may determine a location of the UE, to be described in further detail below. In particular, the SRS engine 240 may use configuration information received from a network node to determine CSI-RS resources to be used for the transmission of SRSs based, at least in part, on the received configuration information from the network, and to cause transceiver circuitry to transmit, to the network node, the SRSs using the determined CSI-RS resources. The SRS engine 240 may also use configuration information from the network to order the available ports to be used for transmitting the SRSs, and / or to group SRS ports into two groups, and to map each SRS port to a corresponding Rx port during SRS “antennaSwitching” sounding.

[0026] The above referenced engines 235 and 240 being applications (e.g., programs) executed by the processor 205 is  only example. The functionality associated with the engines may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the UE 110 or may be a modular component coupled to the UE 110, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. The engines may also be embodied as one application or separate applications. In addition, in some UEs, the functionality described for the processor 205 is split among two or more processors such as a baseband processor and an applications processor. The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a UE.

[0027] The memory arrangement 210 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the UE 110. The display device 215 may be a hardware component configured to show data to a user while the I / O device 220 may be a hardware component that enables the user to enter inputs. The display device 215 and the I / O device 220 may be separate components or integrated together such as a touchscreen.

[0028] The transceiver 225 may be a hardware component configured to establish a connection with the 5G NR-RAN 120, an LTE-RAN (not pictured) , a legacy RAN (not pictured) , a WLAN (not pictured) , etc. Accordingly, the transceiver 225 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . The transceiver 225 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 205 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 225 and configured to receive from and / or transmit  signals to the transceiver 225. The processor 205 may be configured to encode, decode and / or process signals (e.g., signaling from a base station of a network) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0029] Fig. 3 shows an example base station 300 according to various example embodiments. The base station 300 may represent the gNB 120A, the gNB 120B or any other access node through which the UE 110 may establish a connection and manage network operations. It may be considered that the base station 300 is an anchor cell according to the present embodiments.

[0030] The base station 300 may include a processor 305, a memory arrangement 310, an input / output (I / O) device 315, a transceiver 320, and other components 325. The other components 325 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a battery, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the base station 300 to other electronic devices and / or power sources, etc.

[0031] The processor 305 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines for the UE 110. For example, when the gNB 120A is a serving cell for a UE, the engines may include a UE configuration engine 335 for generating and providing configuration information to the network or to a UE, for example, information relating to SRSs. The network may then distribute the configuration information to the UEs so that the UEs can determine resources to use for transmitting SRSs.

[0032] The engines may also include an SRS engine 340 for performing operations related to transmitting configuration information and / or activation signaling for applying a  configuration for a UE to determine resources to use to transmit SRSs. The SRS engine 340 may also be used for receiving SRSs from the UE and using the SRS to perform further actions, as discussed in more detail below. Each of these example operations will be described in more detail below.

[0033] The memory arrangement 310 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the base station 300. The I / O device 315 may be a hardware component or ports that enable a user to interact with the base station 300.

[0034] The transceiver 320 may be a hardware component configured to exchange data with the UE 110 and any other UE in the network arrangement 100. The transceiver 320 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . The transceiver 320 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 305 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 320 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 320. The processor 305 may be configured to encode, decode and / or process (e.g., signaling from a UE) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0035] NR MIMO Operation Enhancement

[0036] Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication may be used in cellular communication, e.g., in LTE, NR, etc. (although it may also be used in other types of wireless  communication, such as wireless local area network (WLAN) communication) .

[0037] Cellular base stations (e.g., eNBs or gNBs) and UEs may communicate signaling information (e.g., control information) regarding MIMO communication. For example, signaling information regarding uplink or downlink MIMO communication may be transmitted between the UE and the base station. While embodiments described herein relate to uplink communication and related signaling, they may also be applied to downlink communication and relate signaling, with appropriate changes. Additionally, various terms herein may be described with respect to NR, but they may also be applicable to other communication standards, e.g., LTE or future cellular standards, with appropriate changes.

[0038] In some embodiments, uplink MIMO communication may be configured to be codebook based or non-codebook based, as desired. For codebook based MIMO communication, the network (or base station) may configure reference signal resource sets (e.g., sounding reference signal (SRS) -ResourceSet) with usage set to “codebook” .

[0039] The network may also specify further configuration information in the downlink control information (DCI) . For example, in DCI, the network (e.g., the base station) may indicate:

[0040] SRI (SRS resource indicator) : one of the SRS resources; and

[0041] Precoding information and number of layers, e.g., including TPMI and rank information.

[0042] In some embodiments, uplink MIMO communication may be configured to be non-codebook based. For example, the network (e.g., the base station) may configure the SRS-ResourceSet with usage set to “nonCodebook” . In this embodiment, up to four SRS resources may be configured per SRS-ResourceSet. Additionally, in the DCI, the network (e.g., the base station) can indicate SRI (SRS resource indicator) , e.g., selecting or specifying a subset of the (up to) four SRS resources.

[0043] NR supports SRS with four different usages, configured as IE usage in SRS-ResourceSet. The first usage is “codebook” usage, which is for uplink multiple input, multiple output (UL MIMO) operation, especially for channels without reciprocity, such as frequency division duplex (FDD) spectrum. In codebook usage, the network may estimate the UL channel based on SRS with “codebook” usage, and then schedule Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) MIMO operation based on the UL channel estimate.

[0044] The second is “nonCodebook” usage, which is for UL MIMO operation especially for channels with reciprocity, e.g., Time Division Duplex (TDD) spectrum. In this usage, the UE may estimate the downlink (DL) channel based on DL Channel State Information-Reference Signal (CSI-RS) , and then assuming channel reciprocity, may acquire a UL channel. The UE may decide on the preferred precoding based on the UL channel estimate and transmit the SRS with “nonCodebook” usage using the preferred precoding. The network schedules the PUSCH MIMO operation based on the “nonCodebook” SRS.

[0045] The third is “antennaSwitching” usage, which is used for DL MIMO operation, especially for channels with reciprocity, e.g., TDD spectrum. The UE may use a “xTyR” scheme, e.g., x  transmit ports to sound y receive ports. The network may support several types of antenna switching as “xTyR, ” where “T” represents Tx antenna ports or Tx chains, “R” represents Rx antenna ports or Rx chains, x= {1, 2, 4} (the number of Tx antenna ports / chains) , and y= {2, 4} (the number of Rx antenna ports / chains) . The network may estimate the UL channel based on SRS with “antennaSwitching” usage. Then, assuming channel reciprocity, the network may acquire a DL channel. The network decides on the preferred DL precoding from “antennaSwitching” SRS.

[0046] The fourth is “beamManagement” usage, which is used for analogy beam management. The UE may sound multiple SRS with “beamManagement” usage, each with a different analog beam.

[0047] In recent Release-19 meetings, it was suggested to support both Type I and Type II codebook refinement supporting up to 128 CSI-RS ports. One way to accomplish this is to aggregate a number of K legacy CSI-RS resources with an equal number of ports, where K = 2, 3, 4. Note that legacy CSI-RS resources only support a maximum of 32 ports. In order to do the aggregation, SRS related enhancements for up to 128 DL ports are needed. Such enhancements are hereby proposed. In particular, nonCodebook SRS enhancements and antennaSwitching SRS enhancements will be discussed.

[0048] NonCodebook SRS Enhancements

[0049] To support up to 128 downlink ports, the following enhancement can be considered for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook. ” More than 1, e.g., K >1 Non-Zero Power (NZP) CSI-RS resources can be configured for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to  “nonCodebook. ” Note that K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources are used to support up to 128 downlink ports and that under current standards (TS38.214) , only one NZP CSI-RS resource can be configured.

[0050] To support “nonCodebook” SRS enhancement for up to 128 downlink ports, to configure NZP CSI-RS resources for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook, ” a list of K =2, 3, 4 (K > 1) NZP CSI-RS resource IDs can be configured to be associated with the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook. ” The following is an example mechanism to do so.

[0093] To support “nonCodebook” SRS enhancement for up to 128 downlink ports, to configure K > 1 NZP CSI-RS resources for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook, ” there are certain restrictions. When the new association IE, e.g., csi-RS-r19, is configured in the SRS-ResourceSet with usage set to “nonCodebook” , the following are the possible restrictions. In a first option, the UE does not expect the network to simultaneously configure the legacy association IE, e.g., “associatedCSI-RS NZP-CSI-RS-ResourceId. ”  In a second option, the UE may ignore the legacy association IE, e.g., “associatedCSI-RS NZP-CSI-RS-ResourceId. ” The following restrictions can be considered for the K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources configured to be associated with the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook. ” If K > 1, then all the K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources have the same number of ports; all the K > 1 NZP CSI-RS resources are contained within 1 or 2 slots in the time domain; all the K > 1 NZP CSI-RS resources are configured with the same frequency domain bandwidth (BW) ; all the K > 1 NZP CSI-RS resources are configured with the same time domain behavior, e.g., aperiodic, periodic, or semi-persistent; and all the K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources are configured with the same power offset, e.g., powerControlOffset and / or powerControlOffsetSS.

[0094] To support “nonCodebook” SRS enhancement for up to 128 downlink ports, to configure K >1 NZP CSI-RS resources for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “nonCodebook, ” a technique for dealing with aperiodic SRS may be necessary. Fig. 4 shows an example timing diagram for an aperiodic SRS according to various example embodiments. When aperiodic SRS are associated with aperiodic CSI-RS, a minimum duration, e.g., dmin, is defined within which the UE is not expected to update the precoding used for the associated SRS transmission. The dmin may be calculated from the last symbol of the last associated CSI-RS in time domain to the first symbol of the corresponding SRS transmission. There are several options for selecting the dmin. In a first option, the dmin may be chosen to be 42 symbols. In some embodiments, 42 symbols may not be enough. Thus, in a second option, the Dmin may be selected as 42 · K symbols. In a third option, dmin may be reported as a UE capability via RRC (radio resource control)  signaling. Optionally, different dmin can be reported for different values of K. In one embodiment, K is linked to the total number of ports by

[0095] antennaSwitching SRS Enhancements

[0096] In another embodiment, the following enhancement can be considered for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “antennaSwitching” to support up to 128 downlink ports. Before describing this enhancement in more detail, some background is provided.

[0097] In NR or 5G networks, a UE may support antenna switching (e.g., also referred to as antenna port switching or port switching) to transmit SRS for downlink channel estimation. The UE may have a different number of transmit (Tx) antenna ports (N_tx) and receive (Rx) antenna ports (N_rx) , where N_tx may typically be lower than N_rx. To measure downlink CSI based on uplink (UL) channel, the base station (gNB) may trigger multiple SRS resources to construct a DL channel. Certain systems support several types of antenna switching as “xTyR, ” where “T” represents Tx antenna ports or Tx chains, “R” represents Rx antenna ports or Rx chains, x= {1, 2, 4} (the number of Tx antenna ports / chains) , and y= {2, 4} (the number of Rx antenna ports / chains) . For example, for a 2T4R UE with 2 Tx chains and 4 Rx chains, the UE may transmit an SRS twice on each of the 2 Tx chains (e.g., using antenna switching) to sound the channels for each of the 4 Rx chains. Similarly, for a 1T4R UE with 1 Tx chain and 4 Rx chains, the UE may transmit SRS four times on the single Tx chain (e.g., using antenna switching) to sound the channels for each of the 4 Rx chains. Skilled persons  will recognize from the disclosure herein that other values of x and y may be used. For example, y may be increased to include 8.

[0098] Antenna switching SRS, e.g., xTyR, where y ≥ x, may be used to allow a network to acquire the DL channel based on a UL channel estimate with DL / UL channel reciprocity. For xTyR, where y ≥ x, SRS with antenna switching, the UE may sound y number of Rx ports with x Tx ports. A number y / x of SRS-Resources are needed, each with x ports. For 6Rx and 8Rx operation, the following SRS antenna switching systems may be supported with the proposed antennaSwitching SRS enhancement: 1T6R, 2T6R, 3T6R, 1T8R, 2T8R, 4T8R, and 8T8R.

[0099] In order to support up to 128 downlink ports, the following enhancement can be considered for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “antennaSwitching. ” For xT6R or xT8R, all the P = 6, 8 SRS ports are ordered based on the following: the SRS-ResourceSet ID, if the corresponding SRS-ResourceSet ID is the same, the SRS-Resource ID; and if the corresponding SRS-Resource ID and SRS-ResourceSet ID are the same, the SRS port ID.

[0100] Fig. 5 is a diagram illustrating an example configuration of SRS resource sets with SRS resources and SRS ports, illustrating an example assignment of SRS resource identifiers across two SRS resource sets, according to various embodiments. Fig. 5 illustrates a 2T8R system as an example. In a 2T8R system, as seen in Fig. 5, there are two SRS resource sets, each with two SRS resources, where each SRS resource has two SRS ports, such that there are a total of eight ports spread across multiple SRS resource sets and across multiple SRS resources.

[0101] In one example embodiment, grouping of SRS ports, SRS resources, and / or SRS resource sets is used so that the base station (gNB) knows which ports are receiving ports. For example, to support up to 128 downlink ports, the following enhancement can be considered for the SRS resource set with high layer parameter usage set to “antennaSwitching” , for xT6R or xT8R. When all the SRS ports are ordered as discussed above, the network may configure the UE to group P =6, 8 SRS ports into two groups. The first group may have the first P / 2 = 3, 4 SRS ports in one embodiment. The second group may have the remaining SRS ports (P / 2 = 3, 4 SRS ports) . Each SRS port may be mapped to a Rx port during the SRS “antennaSwitching” sounding.

[0102] Further, support must be provided for both non-PMI (Pre-coding Matrix Index) based CSI reports as well as PMI-based reports. Thus, for xT6R or xT8R systems, when all the P =6, 8 SRS ports are configured in the groups, when a non-PMI based CSI report is configured, e.g., reportQuantity in the CSI-ReportConfig is set to “cri-RI-CQI, ” the following rankings may be performed. In one embodiment, there may be two codewords, so there would be two channel quality indicators (CQIs) . If the UE reports rank 5, e.g., RI=5, then UE reports two CQIs. The first CQI assumes rank 2, received using Rx ports corresponding to the first group of SRS ports. The second CQI assumes rank 3, received using Rx ports corresponding to the second group of SRS ports. If the UE reports rank 6, e.g., RI=6, then the UE reports two CQIs, where the first CQI assumes rank 3, received using Rx ports corresponding to the first group of SRS ports, and the second CQI assumes rank 3, received using Rx ports corresponding to the second group of SRS ports. If the UE reports rank 7, e.g., RI=7, the UE reports two CQIs, where the first CQI assumes  rank 3, received using Rx ports corresponding to the first group of SRS ports and the second CQI assumes rank 4, received using Rx ports corresponding to the second group of SRS ports. If the UE reports rank 8, e.g., RI=8, then the UE reports two CQIs, where the first CQI assumes rank 4, received using Rx ports corresponding to the first group of SRS ports, and the second CQI assumes rank 4, received using Rx ports corresponding to the second group of SRS ports.

[0103] For xT6R or xT8R, when all the P =6, 8 SRS ports are configured into two groups, and when a PMI based CSI report is configured, e.g., reportQuantity in the CSI-ReportConfig contains “PMI” , e.g., “cri-RI-PMI-CQI, ” the following rankings may be performed.

[0104] Fig. 6 illustrates a block diagram of an example of a method for communicating sounding reference signals (SRSs) to a UE, according to various example embodiments. The method 600 shown in Fig. 6 may be used in conjunction with any of the systems, methods, or devices shown in the Figures, among other devices. In various embodiments, some of the method elements shown may be performed concurrently, in a different order than shown, or may be omitted. Additional method elements may also be performed as desired. As shown, this method may operate as follows.

[0105] At 602, a UE, such as UE 110, may receive, from a network node, such as base station gNB 120A, configuration information for SRSs. The SRSs may be transmitted by the UE on a transmission to the network node.

[0106] In some instances, the configuration information may include an SRS resource set that includes SRS and / or CSI-RS resources, including time and frequency resources. The configuration information may also include any of the information discussed above, including but not limited to CSI resources, SRS resources, CSI-RS and / or SRS resource set information, CSI-RS and / or SRS resource ID information, CSI-RS and / or SRS resource set ID information, restriction information, minimum duration information, SRS port ID information, grouping instructions, and the like.

[0107] In some instances, the configuration information may include an SRS resource group that includes an SRS resource set, including time and frequency resources. In some instances, a resource type for each SRS resource set may be identical. In other instances, a resource type for at least a first SRS  resource set may be different than a resource type for at least a second SRS resource set. Note that the resource type may include any, any combination of, and / or all of (e.g., one or more of) aperiodic, semi-persistent, and / or periodic.

[0108] Referring back to Fig. 6, at 604, the UE may determine resources to be used for the SRSs based, at least in part, on the received configuration information.

[0109] At 606, the UE may transmit, to the network node, the SRSs using the determined SRS or CSI-RS resources.

[0110] Fig. 7 illustrates a block diagram of an example of a method of generating configuration information for sounding reference signals (SRSs) , sending the configuration information to a UE, and receiving SRSs from the UE according to various example embodiments. The method 700 shown in Fig. 7 may be used in conjunction with any of the systems, methods, or devices shown in the Figures, among other devices. In various embodiments, some of the method elements shown may be performed concurrently, in a different order than shown, or may be omitted. Additional method elements may also be performed as desired. As shown, this method may operate as follows.

[0111] At 702, a base station, such as gNB 120A or other network node, may generate configuration information for SRSs. In some instances, the configuration information may include an SRS resource set that includes SRS and / or CSI-RS resources, including time and frequency resources.

[0112] In some instances, the configuration information may include an SRS resource group that includes an SRS resource set, including time and frequency resources.

[0113] Referring back to Fig. 7, at 704, the base station may cause transceiver circuitry to transmit the configuration information to a UE, such as UE 110. The UE may determine resources to be used for transmitting the SRSs based, at least in part, on the received configuration information.

[0114] At 706, the UE may transmit, to the base station, the SRSs using the determined SRS or CSI-RS resources, and the gNB 120A may receive the SRSs from the UE. At 708, the gNB 120A may perform one or more actions based on the received SRSs.

[0115] For example, in the case of nonCodebook usage, processing circuitry in the gNB 120A may be configured to schedule a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) operation based on the received SRS, as discussed more fully below.

[0116] In another example, in antennaSwitching usage, processing circuitry in the gNB 120A may be configured to estimate an uplink channel based on the received SRSs, acquire a  downlink channel, and determine a preferred downlink precoding based on the received SRSs.

[0117] MIMO Signaling

[0118] FIG. 8 illustrates example techniques for configuring MIMO communication according to various example embodiments. Aspects of the method 800 of FIG. 8 may be implemented by a wireless device, such as the UE (s) 110, in communication with a network, e.g., via one or more base stations (e.g., gNB 120A) as illustrated in and described with respect to the Figures, or more generally in conjunction with any of the computer systems or devices shown in the Figures, among other circuitry, systems, devices, elements, or components shown in the Figures, among other devices, as desired. Note that while at least some elements of the method are described in a manner relating to the use of communication techniques and / or features associated with 3GPP specification documents, such description is not intended to be limiting to the disclosure, and aspects of the method may be used in any suitable wireless communication system, as desired. In various embodiments, some of the elements of the methods shown may be performed concurrently, in a different order than shown, may be substituted for by other method elements, or may omitted. Additional method elements may also be performed as desired. As shown, the method may operate as follows.

[0119] Referring back to Fig. 8, in 802, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may establish communication with a network (e.g., via base station gNB 120A) , according to some embodiments. For example, the UE may perform an attach procedure with the base station. In some embodiments, the UE may provide capability information to  the base station. For example, the UE may indicate various MIMO capabilities, number of available antennas, number of available ports, coherency (e.g., non-coherent, partial coherent, full coherent) , etc.

[0120] In 804, the UE may receive MIMO configuration information from the network, e.g., based on the UE capability information. The MIMO configuration information may be received in a single message or a plurality of messages and / or at a single time or over a length of time, as desired. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the MIMO configuration information may be transmitted in radio resource control (RRC) signaling. The MIMO configuration may specify the manner in which the UE performs communication with the base station, e.g., it may specify uplink and / or downlink MIMO configuration information for performing various uplink and / or downlink communication with the base station. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the MIMO configuration information may be provided as part of PUSCH configuration (e.g., PUSCH-Config) .

[0121] The MIMO configuration may include any of the configuration information disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the MIMO configuration may specify sounding reference signal (SRS) resources. For example, the MIMO configuration may specify one or more SRS or CSI-RS resources within one or more SRS resource sets. For example, the MIMO configuration may specify 2, 4, or more SRS or CSI-RS resources per SRS resource set.

[0122] In some embodiments, the MIMO configuration may specify whether the MIMO communication (e.g., uplink MIMO communication) is set to “codebook” or “nonCodebook” . In some  embodiments, the MIMO configuration may specify parameters for antenna switching. Antenna switching may be enabled concurrently with codebook or non-codebook MIMO configurations. For example, the MIMO configuration may specify “codebook+antenna switching” or “non-codebook+antenna switching” , as desired.

[0123] In some embodiments, the MIMO configuration may specify port configuration (e.g., within PUSCH configuration) . For example, port configuration may include a number of ports as well as coherency (e.g., non-coherent, partial and non-coherent, fully and partial and non-coherent, full coherent, etc. ) . In some embodiments, a first subset of the ports may have a first configuration and a second subset of the ports may have a second configuration. For example, for a four port configuration, the MIMO configuration may allow a first configuration for two ports (e.g., non-coherent) and a second configuration for two other ports (e.g., fully and partial and non-coherent) , e.g., for SRS resources.

[0124] Referring back to Fig. 8, in 806, the UE may receive downlink control information (DCI) which may specify MIMO parameters that may augment or change the received MIMO configuration (e.g., uplink MIMO configuration) . In some embodiments, the DCI is an uplink DCI (e.g., an uplink DCI grant) . The MIMO parameters (e.g., included in the DCI) may specify which CSI-RS resources the UE should use (e.g., selecting one or more CSI-RS resources from the plurality of configured CSI-RS resources specified by the MIMO configuration) , e.g., during uplink transmission. For example, as discussed above, the MIMO parameters of the DCI may specify SRI, SRSI, and / or any number of fields to specify the desired CSI-RS resource (s) (e.g., of the set of available CSI-RS  resources already configured for the UE in the MIMO configuration) the UE should use for transmission. Additionally, or alternatively, the DCI (e.g., the MIMO parameters specified by the DCI) may also include precoding information and / or number of layers (e.g., transmit precoding matrix indicator TPMI and / or rank information) . Other MIMO parameters are also envisioned (e.g., included in the DCI or otherwise) . Thus, the UE may receive MIMO parameters (e.g., in the DCI or otherwise) that modify or augment the MIMO configuration. These MIMO parameters may be configured in a more dynamic manner than the MIMO configuration, e.g., they may be more adaptive to channel conditions and may be modified by the base station as the channel conditions change.

[0125] In 808, the UE may perform MIMO communication (e.g., uplink MIMO communication) with the base station according to the MIMO configuration and / or MIMO parameters in the DCI. For example, the UE may perform uplink data communication according to the configuration, e.g., using the specified precoding information, layer information, rank information, SRS and / or CSI-RS resources, etc. The UE may transmit SRS in the specified SRS and / or CSI-RS resources, which may allow the UE and the base station to feedback and adjust uplink transmission configuration (e.g., uplink MIMO configuration) , such as by adjusting future uplink DCI parameters / fields (e.g., uplink MIMO parameters, such as those described herein) . However, the UE may be configured to perform communication with the base station without transmitting data (e.g., in addition to the SRSs) . The MIMO communication may include various sounding procedures using the assigned CSI-RS resources. Thus, the MIMO communication may include SRS transmissions without additional data transmission.  Alternatively, the SRS may be transmitted at the same time or concurrently with data in a data transmission, as desired.
