Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS OF AI BASED DIRECT MEASUREMENT EVENT PREDICTIONFIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to communication systems, and more particularly, the method of AI based measurement event prediction for wireless communication systems.BACKGROUND

[0002] The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into 3GPP and wireless technology has ushered in a new era of potential advancements and efficiencies in 5G and future 6G. In the development of AI / ML algorithms for wireless technology. In 3GPP meetings, the AI / ML model has been discussed in mobility use case, with the topic of measurement prediction, event prediction, measurement reduction and so on. In conventional network of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) 5G new radio (NR) , User Equipment (UE) conducts measurements to perform event evaluation procedure for mobility. Several concepts are introduced for the event evaluation, e.g., TTT (time-to-trigger) timer, offsets, hysteresis, entering and leaving conditions, etc.SUMMARY

[0003] The following presents a simplified summary of one or more aspects in order to provide a basic understanding of such aspects. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated aspects, and is intended to neither identify key or critical elements of all aspects nor delineate the scope of any or all aspects. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0004] The rapid evolution of mobile networks towards standalone New Radio (NR) scenarios brings forth complex challenges in Radio Resource Management (RRM) , particularly in maintaining efficient connectivity and service continuity. In the RRC_CONNECTED mode, critical operations such as handovers and radio link failures (RLF) necessitate precise and timely RRM predictions to ensure seamless user experiences. The primary issue is the need to enhance RRM prediction mechanisms to support robust and efficient network management. This involves predicting RRM measurements, measurement events, and the likelihood of RLF or handover failures (HOF) during the Physical Cell (PCell) change procedures. Accurate predictions can significantly mitigate the risks associated with these events, thereby optimizing the network's performance and reliability.

[0005] Two main goals are aimed at refining the process of RRM in standalone NR scenarios by AI.The first goal focuses on reducing the measurement efforts required across temporal, spatial, or frequency domains by leveraging predicted measurements. This approach not only conserves network resources but also minimizes the operational overhead on the system, leading to faster and more efficient RRM processes. The second goal seeks to enhance handover performance by addressing common issues  such as ping-pong effects, short times of stay at a cell, and interruptions during handovers. By improving these aspects, the network can achieve smoother transitions and better management of connected devices, particularly in high-mobility environments where such challenges are prevalent.

[0006] Intra-frequency intra-cell temporal domain prediction involves forecasting measurement results within a prediction window based on actual measurement results from an observation window in the same cell or set of cells.

[0007] Measurement event prediction in the context of Radio Resource Management (RRM) refers to the process of forecasting when certain predefined conditions for measurement reporting will be met, based on the anticipated evaluation of radio link metrics over time. This prediction takes into account the dynamic nature of the radio environment and user mobility, utilizing the results of RRM predictions in the temporal domain. By analyzing the expected future measurements, such as signal quality and strength, and considering parameters-such as the Time-To-Trigger (TTT) timer, offsets, hysteresis, and specific entering and leaving conditions for measurement events-the UE can proactively determine when a measurement event is likely to occur. In this invention, apparatus and mechanisms are sought to perform AI based UE measurement and event evaluation to trigger the mobility event earlier and reduce unnecessary handover for wireless communication systems.

[0008] In an aspect of the disclosure, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided. The apparatus may be a UE. UE perform measurement and predict the events result for a period of prediction window (PW) in the future based on the measured data in the observation window (OW) in the past. UE further judges the measurement report (MR) trigger condition is satisfied or not in the future by the predicted event result. The configured event is pre-defined by the network. In one embodiment, the event is measurement reporting event based on cell measurement result or beam measurement result (E. g, A3 offset to define the neighbour cell becomes amount of offset better than PCell / PSCell) . UE triggers the measurement report based on the result of the predicted event. The predicted event is derived by predict condition. In one embodiment, the predicted conditionis pre-defined by UE. In another embodiment, the predicted condition are pre-define by NW.

[0009] In one embodiment, UE determines whether to trigger MR earlier when the predicted condition A that entering condition applicable for one event is satisfied. UE trigger MR if the predicted condition A is continuously satisfied in the future, or another predicted condition (represent by predicted condition B) that the serving cell quality is lower than certain condition.

[0010] In one embodiment, UE determines whether to trigger MR when the predicted condition A has been satisfied for a certain period. UE trigger MR if the predicted condition A is continuously satisfied in a certain period of time in the future, and skip the MR if the predicted target cell quality meets the leaving condition.

[0011] In one embodiment, UE only send MR when it is allowed to send MR. In different embodiment, the allowance of sending MR is controlled by the network by forbidden timer, forbidden flag, or states and pre-defined behaviors.

[0012] The invention is not limited to mobility scenario, it may also apply to other scenario, such as RRM (Radio link monitoring) , system load managing, location, traffic prediction, and reduction on UE assistance information and so on. The invention is not limited to 5G NR, it may also apply to other communication systems, such as 6G or further-generation communication systems.

[0013] To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the one or more aspects comprise the features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. The following description and the annexed drawings set forth in detail certain illustrative features of the one or more aspects. These features are indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principles of various aspects may be employed, and this description is intended to include all such aspects and their equivalents.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0022] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to  various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0023] Aspects of the present disclosure provide methods, apparatus, processing systems, and computer readable mediums for NR (new radio access technology, or 5G technology) , 6G or other radio access technology. NR or 6G may support various wireless communication services. These services may have different quality of service (QoS) requirements e.g. latency and reliability requirements.

[0024] Figure 1 illustrates a schematic system diagram illustrating an exemplary wireless network in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. Wireless system includes one or more fixed base infrastructure units forming a network distributed over a geographical region. The base unit may also be referred to as an access point, an access terminal, a base station, a Node-B, an eNode-B, a gNB, or by other terminology used in the art. As an example, base stations serve a number of mobile stations within a serving area, for example, a cell, or within a cell sector. In some systems, one or more base stations are coupled to a controller forming an access network that is coupled to one or more core networks. gNB 1and gNB 2 are base stations in NR and / or 6G, the serving area of which may or may not overlap with each other. As an example, UE1 or mobile station is only in the service area of gNB 1 and connected with gNB1. UE1 is connected with gNB1 only, gNB1 is connected with gNB 1 and 2 via Xn interface. UE2 is in the overlapping service area of gNB1 and gNB2.

[0025] Figure 1 further illustrates simplified block diagrams for UE2 and gNB2, respectively. UE has an antenna, which transmits and receives radio signals. A RF transceiver, coupled with the antenna, receives RF signals from antenna, converts them to baseband signal, and sends them to processor. In one embodiment, the RF transceiver may comprise two RF modules (not shown) . A first RF module is used for transmitting and receiving on one frequency band, and the other RF module is used for different frequency bands transmitting and receiving which is different from the first transmitting and receiving. RF transceiver also converts received baseband signals from processor, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna. Processor processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in UE. Measurement function is performed by receiving the radio signals from gNB. Memory stores program instructions and data to control the operations of mobile station. UE also includes multiple function modules that carry out different tasks in accordance with embodiments of the current invention.

[0026] A measurement controller, which controls the UE measurement behavior according to different networks’ beams. In different embodiments, the measurement controller further contains the functionality of measurement prediction based on the measured radio link quality. The prediction can be performed in time domain, frequency domain, spatial domain or any of their combination.

[0027] An AI based event prediction and management controller, which controls the event evaluation behavior based on AI prediction and network configuration. In different embodiments, the event evaluation controller further contains the functionality of triggering measurement report earlier and / or skipping measurement report (MR) to avoid unnecessary handover indication.

[0028] A RRC State controller, which controls UE RRC state according to network’s command and UE conditions.

[0029] Similarly, gNB2 has an antenna, which transmits and receives radio signals. A RF transceiver, coupled with the antenna, receives RF signals from antenna, converts them to baseband signals, and sends them to processor. RF transceiver also converts received baseband signals from processor, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna. Processor processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in gNB2. Memory stores program instructions and data to control the operations of gNB2.

[0030] Figure 2 illustrates an exemplary measurement and prediction time window in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. The Observation Window (OW) represents the time during which the radio link quality is truly measured by UE, and the Prediction Window (PW) represents the future time that the UE can predict the measurement result based on the output of AI / ML model by the data measured in OW. F predictions can be obtained during the PW. At least F=1. In one embodiment, the boundary between the OW and PW is the current time of the UE. In one embodiment, the PW consists of two parts: the predicted TTT window in the near future and the additional PW in the distant future, as shown in the figure.

[0031] In one embodiment, the PW represents the entire prediction window that UE can predict based on its capability. In one embodiment, the predicted TTT window represents the baseline capability requirement for UE to support AI-based measurement prediction. In one embodiment, the additional PW denotes the extendable prediction window upon the UE’s capability. In one embodiment, the length of OW and PW are configured by the network, considering the UE capability.

[0032] Figure 3 illustrates the AI model structures for UE to perform direct event prediction in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. Direct measurement event prediction model is trained for configured measurement event with certain configuration (TTT / offset / hysteresis) . In one embodiment, the AI model input is signal quality (RSRP / RSRQ / SINR) of specific cell / cluster. In one embodiment, the model is trained for multiple configured events. In one embodiment, the model output is a vector encompassing the probability distribution of all configured events. (e.g., [0.1, 0.2, 0.1, 0.6] , 0.1 for no event, 0.2 for EventA1, 0.1 for EventA1, 0.6 for EventA3, etc. ) In one embodiment, the model output is a vector a category label (e.g., 0 for no event, 1 for EventA1, 2 for EventA1, 3 for EventA3, etc) of all configured event. In one embodiment, the model is trained for one configured event. In one embodiment, the AI model output is the probability (or Binary flag) of certain configured event.

[0033] The MR trigger condition judgement are different based on the implementation of AI model. In one embodiment, the prediction event is defined as whether neighbor cell become amount of offset  better than serving cell at certain time sample or during a certain time period. UE determine whether to trigger MR based on the predict condition A and predict condition B are satisfied or not.

[0034] In one embodiment, the model is a multiclass classification model and the model output is the combination of predict condition A and B. As shown in (a) , the model output is the probability or flag of predicted condition A and B (entering condition and / or serving cell quality threshold (if configured) ) . The model output including multiple elements (predict events) . In one embodiment, one element is the probability or flag that condition A is satisfied during the PW. When the flag represents YES or probability is above certain threshold that means the predicted condition A is satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the PW in the future, UE triggers the measurement report. In one embodiment, one element is the probability or flag that represents the predicted condition A is satisfied or not during predicted TTT but not satisfied during additional PW, and predicted condition B is satisfied or not during PW.When the flag represents YES or probability is above certain threshold that means the predict event is satisfied and UE trigger MR. In one embodiment, if all elements represent the predict events are not satisfied, UE does not trigger the MR and continue the measurement and prediction.

[0035] The predicted event A and B can also be separate predicted. In one embodiment, as shown in (b) , the model is a multilabel classification model and the model output is multiple label that represent the predicted condition A and predict condition B occurrence (probability) with same output layer. In one embodiment, one label is the probability or flag of condition A, another label is the probability or flag of condition B. In another embodiment, the model is a multitask classification model and the model output is multiple output that represent the predicted condition A and predict condition B occurrence (probability) with different output layer. One model output is probability or flag of condition A. Another model output is probability or flag of condition B. With the separate predicted condition, in one embodiment, UE determines whether to trigger MR earlier when the predicted condition A applicable for one configured event is satisfied. UE trigger MR if the predicted condition A is continuously satisfied in the future, or another predicted condition B is satisfied.

[0036] Figure 4 illustrates exemplary flowchart for UE to decide whether to perform early measurement report based on the direct measurement event prediction in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. UE continuously performs measurements and predicts the measurement results in the future PW time based on the past data measured in OW. In figure 3~9, the event is a pre-defined measurement reporting event by the network based on cell measurement result or beam measurement result. For example, Event A1 (Serving becomes better than threshold) ; Event A2 (Serving becomes worse than threshold) ; Event A3 (Neighbour becomes offset better than SpCell) ; Event A4 (Neighbour becomes better than threshold) ; Event A5 (SpCell becomes worse than threshold1 and neighbour becomes better than threshold2) Event A6 (Neighbour becomes offset better than SCell) .

[0037] In one embodiment, UE judges whether the event is satisfied or not for one or more applicable cells for all the predicted event / condition results taken in the future, e.g., during PW. The entering condition is represented as the condition A is met for the event. The leaving condition is defined  as the condition A is no longer met for the event. The source cell quality is below a certain threshold during a certain period, or the RLF is predicted during a certain period is represented as condition B.

[0038] If the condition A applicable for this event is predicted to be satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the PW in the future, UE triggers the measurement report.

[0039] If the condition A applicable for this event is predicted not satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the predicted TTT window in the future, the UE does not trigger the measurement report.

[0040] If the condition A applicable for this event is predicted to be satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the predicted TTT window in the future, but not during the additional PW in the future, the UE checks the condition B during the PW and triggers the Measurement Report (MR) if the condition B is satisfied. Otherwise, UE does not trigger the MR and continues the measurement and prediction. In some embodiments, the condition B is that the predicted source cell quality is below a certain threshold is predicted happen during the PW, or a certain period. In some other embodiments, the condition B is that RLF is predicted happen during the PW, or a certain period. In other embodiment, the condition is that one or more Qout are predicted during the PW. In a specific embodiment, the network configures both the condition that must be met and the duration for which this condition should be continuously satisfied.

[0041] Figures 5 and 6 are schematic diagrams illustrating different scenarios of the flowchart in figure 4 in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. In one embodiment, in all these figures, the entering condition applicable for this event is satisfied for one or more applicable cells at present, and UE checks the predicted measurement result in the future PW. In another embodiment, the entering condition applicable for this event is not fulfilled satisfied for one or more applicable cells at present, UE checks the predicted measurement result in the future PW.

[0042] In Figure 5 (a) , the condition A applicable for the configured event is predicted to be satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the whole PW, UE triggers the MR to the network at present. The purpose is to send measurement report to the network earlier to request for handover.

[0043] In Figure 5 (b) , the condition A applicable for this the configured event is predicted to be satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the predicted TTT window, but not satisfied during the additional PW. The condition B is predicted to not satisfied in the PW. The UE does not trigger the MR to the network at present but continues the measurement and prediction. The purpose is to avoid frequent cell switches caused by the fluctuation of the source cell being inferior to the target cell for a very short time.

[0044] In Figure 6, the condition A applicable for this the configured event is predicted to be satisfied for one or more applicable cells during the predicted TTT window, but not satisfied during the additional PW, similar to Figure 5 (b) . However, the condition B is predicted to be satisfied in the PW. Consequently, the UE triggers the MR to the network at present to request a handover to prevent data throughput drop or radio link failure (RLF) .

[0045] Figure 7 illustrates exemplary flowchart for UE to perform MR trigger procedure when the event has been satisfied for a specific period in accordance with embodiments of the current invention.

[0046] UE performs measurements and predicts the event / condition in the future PW time based on the past data measured in OW. When the condition A for the event has been satisfied for a specific period, UE checks if it is allowed to send MR at this stage. If UE is not allowed to send MR, UE continues measurement and prediction without sending MR. In one embodiment, the specific period is a certain pre-configured period by the network. In one embodiment, the specific period is the TTT configured by the network for legacy mobility. In one embodiment, the specific period is the predicted TTT window that used for AI-based measurement prediction.

[0047] In one embodiment, the UE is not allowed to send MR by the activation of an inactive / forbidden timer. The inactive / forbidden timer starts when the previous MR is sent, and UE is allowed to send MR after the inactive / forbidden timer expires. In one embodiment, the UE decides whether it is allowed to send MR by a flag indicated by the network. In different embodiments, the flag is indicated by the network via RRC, MAC-CE or DCI. In one embodiment, the UE decides whether it is allowed to send MR by different conditions defined by the network. UE is allowed to send MR when UE has not met the entering condition. If UE has met the condition A, UE is allowed to send MR after condition A is no longer satisfied.

[0048] If the UE is allowed to send MR, UE checks the predicted measurement result to see if the condition A for the configured event is satisfied during a certain period in the future. If it is satisfied, UE triggers the MR to the network. In different embodiments, the certain period is the predicted TTT window, or the PW of UE, or a certain period configured by the network.

[0049] If the condition A for the configured event is not satisfied (by one or more measurement samples) during a certain period in the future, or the condition A for the configured event is no longer satisfied during a certain period in the future, UE checks the condition B and triggers the Measurement Report (MR) if the condition B is satisfied. Otherwise, UE does not trigger the MR and continues the measurement and prediction. In different embodiments, the condition B is that the predicted source cell quality is below a certain threshold, or RLF is predicted. In different embodiments, the certain period is the predicted TTT window, or the PW of UE, or T310, or a certain period configured by the network. In one embodiment, the certain period is the remaining time of legacy TTT for mobility.

[0050] In one embodiment, the AI-based direct event prediction is configured together with legacy mobility procedure, and the specific period is the TTT in legacy mobility to trigger MR. The outcome of AI-based measurement prediction and event management overrules the outcome of legacy measurement report procedure, and UE skips the measurement report. In different embodiment, UE resets or stops the TTT timer for mobility.

[0051] Figure 8, 9 are schematic diagrams illustrating different scenarios of the flowchart in figure 7 in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. In all these figures, the condition A has been satisfied for a certain period at present, and UE checks the predicted result for a certain period in the  future. In different embodiments, these two certain periods can be the same or different.

[0052] In Figure 8 (a) , the condition A for the configured event is satisfied during a certain period in the future. UE triggers the MR to the network at present.

[0053] In Figure 8 (b) , the condition A for the configured event is not satisfied during a certain period. The condition B is not satisfied in a certain period. The UE does not trigger the MR to the network at present but continues the measurement and prediction. The purpose is to avoid frequent cell switches caused by the fluctuation of the source cell being inferior to the target cell for a very short time.

[0054] In Figure 9, the condition A for the configured event is not satisfied during a certain period. However, The condition B is satisfied in a certain period. Consequently, the UE triggers the MR to the network at present to request a cell switch to prevent data throughput drop or radio link failure (RLF) .

[0055] In one embodiment, for the scenario in Figure 4 and Figure 7, the UE further sends MR when the leaving condition is met and the network allows UE to report on leaving condition.
