Description

- 1 -POLYTERPENE FILM FORMER FOR COSMETIC APPLICATIONS FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure provides a personal care composition comprising at least one terpene polymer with a weight average molecular weight greater than 3,000 g / mol that when formulated into the composition for personal care, delivers color transfer resistance, even when exposed to oil, water, and / or food. The personal care composition comprising at least one terpene polymer can be combined with components typically used in personal care to provide personal care formulations.BACKGROUND

[0002] There exists a need in the market for non-silicone, non-acrylate, 100% natural film formers for use in cosmetic applications, especially in lip-color and lipstick, providing resistance to (a) general color transfer, (b) color transfer when exposed to food oils, and / or (c) color transfer when exposed to beverages containing water.

[0003] Natural resins of plant or animal origin constitute an advantageous product class by virtue of their special properties linked to nature. However, such resins of natural origin are rarely used in cosmetic compositions because they are generally insoluble in water, a ubiquitous solvent used in the cosmetic industry. Attempts have been made to adapt these natural resins to a form that is suitable for use with water.

[0004] Recently a variety of terpenes and their derivatives have been investigated as natural sources of monomers, to produce various classes of polymers, such as poly(myrcene), poly(limonene), and poly(β-pinene). These terpene polymers are used as tackifier resins in adhesives and are synthesized as pallets or as irregularly shaped powders.

[0005] U.S. Patent No.3,314,981 discloses the polymerization of turpentine or fractions thereof to provide liquid terpene polymers for use in cosmetics as softening agents. These liquid terpene polymers have a molecular weight below about 500 g / mol. U.S. Patent No.8,252,270 discloses terpene resins having a molecular weight from about 300 g / mol to about 2,000 g / mol used to prepare cosmetic compositions. These disclosures did not investigate the transfer resistance of these terpene polymers, let alone investigate the effect- 2 - of a terpene polymer having a molecular weight greater than 3,000 g / mol on transfer resistance after exposure to food oils.

[0006] There is a need to provide polymers derived from plant-based monomers that can be formulated in a hydrophobic environment, such as an environment that typically uses a volatile hydrocarbon (e.g., isododecane) as a solvent. There is a need to provide polymers derived from plant-based monomers that provide improved transfer resistance, water resistance, and food oil resistance.SUMMARY

[0060] Terpenes are classified using the isoprene rule (C5 rule), which is based on the number and organization of carbon atoms in the molecule, thus, grouping these molecules according to the number of isoprene units linked in a head-to-tail manner and constituting hemiterpenes (1 isoprene unit), monoterpenes (2 isoprene units; C10H16), sesquiterpenes (3 isoprene units; C15H24), and diterpenes (4 isoprene units; C20H32), or in general, compounds with formula (C5H8)n, wherein n ≥ 2. Although the head-to-tail configuration is the most common, non-head-to-tail condensation of isoprene units also exists. The term “monomer” as used herein is an organic molecule that can be used as a raw material in a polymerization reaction, and which becomes part of a polymer backbone during the polymerization reaction.- 8 -

[0061] The term “polymer” as used herein, refers to a macromolecular structure comprising repeating molecular arrangements of monomers. The term polymer is intended to encompass polymers that contain more than three repeating units.

[0062] The term “homopolymer” as used herein, refers to a polymer made from repeating units of a single monomer.

[0063] The term “copolymer” as used herein, refers to a polymer made from repeating units of at least two different monomers.

[0064] The term “hydrogenated” as used herein, refers to a chemical process that adds hydrogen atoms to unsaturated (double) bonds to form saturated (single) bonds. In some aspects, the extent of hydrogenation is from about 0.01% to 100%.

[0065] The weight average molecular weight (MW) is calculated from the weight fraction distribution of different sized molecules. Since larger molecules in a sample weigh more than smaller molecules, the MW is skewed to higher values, and is always greater than the number average molecular weight (Mn).

[0066] MW = Σ wiMi

[0067] Mn = Σ niMi

[0068] wherein:

[0069] wi = weight fraction of chains with molecular weight Mi (wi = (niMi) / Mn)

[0070] ni = mole fraction of chains with molecular weight Mi

[0071] The term “oligomer” as used herein, refers to a compound made of repeating molecular units of monomers. Unlike polymers, oligomers have a much lower molecular weight since they are made up of only a few repeating units. Oligomers are classified by the number of monomers for example, a tetramer is comprised of four monomers. Similar to polymers, oligomers can be made from identical or non-identical monomers.

[0072] The phrase “BB cream” as used herein, refers to a “blemish balm” or a “beauty balm” and is used to moisturize, protect, and / or correct the skin.

[0073] The phrase “CC cream” as used herein, refers to a “color corrector” or a “complexion corrector” and is used to neutralize the look of skin imperfections by utilizing colors opposite of each other on the color wheel. For example, to correct purple under eye circles and veins, a CC cream with a peach / orange color can be used or to correct redness associated with rosacea, sunburn, acne, or broken capillaries, a green CC cream can be used.- 9 -

[0074] The phrase “rheology modifier” as used herein, refers to a component used to not only thicken and modify the viscosity of a personal care composition but also to structure the composition so that when a force is applied it becomes flowable and easily poured. Examples of rheology modifiers include natural gums, cellulose, clays, polyethylene glycols, synthetic polymers, and organoclays.

[0075] The term “colorant (A)” preferably refers to the group including:

[0076] 1) untreated pigments;

[0077] 2) treated pigments;

[0078] 3) dyes;

[0079] 4) pearls; and

[0080] combinations thereof.

[0081] The term “pigment” refers to white or colored, mineral or organic particles, insoluble in aqueous medium, intended to color and / or opacify the composition. Since they are insoluble, they remain suspended and contribute color through dispersion and suspension rather than solvation. Pigments are often used in cosmetic compositions such as foundations, concealers, lipsticks, lip stains, lip liners, blushes, eyeshadows, mascara, eyeliners, brow gels, sunscreens, and more. Pigments often contribute to cosmetic compositions’ long-lasting properties and minimal migration.

[0082] In some aspects, cosmetic compositions contain one or more pigments, which are typically present in a different phase from the gel phase. The colorant such as pigment used herein can be inorganic and / or organic. Cosmetic compositions according to the invention preferably comprise greater than or equal to 0.1% colorants such as pigments by weight of the cosmetic composition to provide a coloring or pigmenting effect. Typically, the colorants such as pigments may be present from about 0.1% to 25%, preferably from about 0.5 to 15%, and most preferably from about 1 to 10% by weight.

[0083] Pigments can be selected from the group consisting of titanium oxides such as rutile titanium dioxide, anatase titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, zirconium oxide, iron oxides such as ferric oxide, ferrous oxide, yellow iron oxide, and red iron oxide, bismuth oxychlorides, black iron oxide, acyl glutamate iron oxides, chromium oxide, chromium hydroxide, manganese violet, cerium oxide, ultramarine blue, carmine, and derivatives and mixtures thereof. More preferably, the pigment is titanium oxide, yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide,- 10 - black iron oxide, and mixtures thereof. The pigments can be surface modified to render them either hydrophobic or hydrophilic to interact synergistically with the particle network.

[0084] The term “pearls” refers to pearlescent agents in a cosmetic composition that add optical shimmer and luster or for tactile silkiness to the touch. They are often used in eyeshadows, nail polishes, and highlighters to add sparkle and shine.

[0085] Pearls can be selected from the group consisting of synthetic fluorphlogopite, including synthetic fluorphlogopite (and) titanium dioxide (and) iron oxides (and) tin oxide, iron oxides (and) synthetic fluorphlogopite, synthetic fluorphlogopite (and) titanium dioxide (and) tin oxide, synthetic fluorphlogopite (and) iron oxides (and) tin oxide, synthetic fluorphlogopite (and) titanium dioxide (and) tin oxide, calcium sodium borosilicate (and) titanium dioxide (and) tin oxide, calcium sodium borosilicate (and) iron oxides (and) tin oxide, and calcium sodium borosilicate (and) titanium dioxide (and) tin oxide.

[0086] The term “dyes” refers to colorants that are soluble in water or other organic solvents. Dyes can be selected from the group consisting of oil-soluble dyes such as green 6, violet 2, and red 17, and water-soluble dyes such as orange 4, red 28 lake, red 33, yellow 10, blue 1, and yellow 8.

[0087] The term “colorant dispersion” such as “pigment dispersion”, in beauty and personal care, refers to the process of distributing pigments, often insoluble, into a liquid- based formulation, in order to make colored cosmetic products. Dispersion is extremely important and requires more than simple mixing, such as wetting, separating, and distributing the pigments.

[0099] Various aspects of the disclosure are described in greater detail below.II. Compositions of Terpene Polymers

[0100] The present disclosure provides a composition (e.g., a personal care composition) comprising at least one terpene polymer with a weight average molecular weight greater than 3,000 g / mol. The composition (e.g., personal care composition) is capable of forming a film on a keratinous substrate, wherein the film is capable of remaining on the keratinous substrate without flaking or transferring to an object that comes in contact with the film. As shown in FIGs 1-5, Formulation 2 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~8,291 g / mol) and Formulation 4 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~5,739 g / mol) showed good transfer resistance, water resistance, and food oil resistance when compared to the blank (Formulation 3). In particular, the transfer resistance test, water resistance test, and- 22 - food oil resistance test for Formulation 2 showed very little transference. The transfer resistance test and water resistance test for Formulation 5 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~2,641 g / mol) showed very little transference; however, the increased transfer to a cotton cloth observed with the food oil resistance test indicates that compositions having a molecular weight > 2,641 g / mol show greater adherence to a keratinous substrate (e.g., skin, lips, hair, nails) than lower molecular weight compositions.

[0101] Additionally, these terpene polymers are not only derived from plant-based monomers but they are also soluble in volatile oils such as isododecane and isoparaffin which are typically used in personal care compositions. Isododecane is well known for its practically weightless feel on the skin and excellent spreadability. Isododecane is also known to provide moisturization to the skin and to condition skin and hair.

It should be appreciated by those of skill in the art that the techniques disclosed in the examples that follow represent techniques discovered by the inventors to function well in the practice of the disclosure, and thus can be considered to constitute preferred modes for its practice. However, those of skill in the art should, in light of the present disclosure, appreciate that many changes can be made in the specific examples which are disclosed and still obtain a like or similar result without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure.- 45 - Example 1: Preparation of Poly(β-pinene) with Molecular Weight ≤ 3,000 g / mol

[0283] AlCl3 (0.3 grams, 0.0022 mol) was mixed with 1.9 mL of dichloromethane and 0.4 mL of Ph2O and stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes. A solution of 45 grams of β- pinene in 45 grams of toluene was prepared and cooled to -30 °C in a 250 mL three-neck round bottle flask, which was equipped with an over-head stirrer, a thermocouple, and nitrogen gas. Then the AlCl3 catalyst solution was quickly added to the three-neck round bottle flask with the β-pinene. The reaction mixture was then quenched with 1 M aqueous HCl. The organic layer was washed with water. The final product solution was dried under reduced pressure and a white powder was obtained. The resultant poly(β-pinene) had a weight average molecular weight of about 2,641 g / mol. The weight average molecular weight was determined by gel permeation chromatography with an evaporative light scattering detector (GPC-ELSD, Agilent Infinity 1260, Agilent Technologies, Inc., Waldbronn, Germany) in CH2Cl2 based on polystyrene narrow molecular weight standard calibration curves with a range of 1,000-100,000 Daltons.Example 2: Preparation of Poly(β-pinene) with Molecular Weight ≥ 3,000 g / mol

[0284] AlCl3 (1.5 grams, 0.0112 mol) was mixed with 9.4 mL of dichloromethane and 1.8 mL of Ph2O in a 250 mL three-neck round bottle flask, which was equipped with an over- head stirrer, a thermocouple, and nitrogen gas. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes. Then 225 g of toluene was added and the solution was cooled to 10 °C. To the cooled toluene solution, 225 grams of β-pinene was added. The reaction mixture was then quenched with 1 M aqueous HCl. The resulting solution was transferred to a separation funnel and the organic layer was washed with water. The final product solution was dried under reduced pressure and a white powder was obtained. The resultant poly(β-pinene) had a weight average molecular weight greater than 3,000 g / mol with poly(β-pinene). Poly(β-pinene) with a weight average molecular weight of about 5,739 g / mol and poly(β- pinene) with a weight average molecular about 8,291 g / mol was obtained by this method. The weight average molecular weights were determined by GPC-ELSD (in CH2Cl2 based on polystyrene narrow molecular weight standard calibration curves with a range of 1,000- 100,000 Daltons).- 46 - Example 3: Preparation of Poly(limonene)

[0288] The formulations prepared in Formulation Example 1 were subjected to the following transfer resistance in-vitro test protocol:

[0289] (a) Transfer resistance (TR): two types of substrates are used in this protocol: Vitro- Skin N19 (IMS Testing Group, Bunnell, FL) and Black Scrub Panel Paper P121-10N (BYK-Gardner GmbH, Geretsried, Germany). (1) Substrate 1 preparation: Vitro-Skin N19 was hydrated using 140 grams of distilled water and 60 grams of glycerin. Once hydrated overnight, it was placed in the center of a cutout of a previously prepared printing stencil, with the rough side to the top, then flattened against the bottom piece of sheeting to remove entrapped air and wrinkles. Then a sample from the tested formulation was placed in an approximately 0.5 mm thick line along the left side of the VITRO-SKIN. Using the 1 mm gap side of the wet film applicator, a uniform coating of sample over the entire surface of the VITRO-SKIN was achieved by slowly pulling the wet film applicator over the flat VITRO-SKIN. Then, the so-coated VITRO-SKIN was placed in a 50 °C oven for 30 minutes. (2) Substrate 2 preparation: Black Scrub Panel Paper P121-10N) was coated with a 3 mil film using a wet film applicator, and then subjected to 50°C drying for 10 min in an oven. Then the substrate (1) or substrate (2) was placed on a clean flat surface. Using a rubber band, a piece of transfer cloth was tightly attached to the bottom of the 500 gm weight. The weight was centered on the coated piece of substrate (1) or substrate (2), which- 48 - was securely held in place while the weight was rotated in small steps through 360° by moving it through as many partial rotations as needed to make an entire circle. Then the cotton cloth was removed from the weight and visually examined for the degree of color transfer.

[0290] (b) Water resistance (WR): The same process as in (a) was employed, except that prior to the cloth-covered weight application, 9 drops of distilled water were applied onto the center of the coated and dried substrate, and after 1 minute the cotton cloth was applied as described above.

[0291] (c) Food oil resistance (OR): Same procedure as (a) and (b) but instead of water, corn oil was used.

[0292] The results are depicted in FIGs. 1-5, where a lighter color indicates less color transfer from the substrate to the cotton cloth. As shown in the FIGs, Formulation 2 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~8,291 g / mol) and Formulation 4 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~5,739 g / mol) showed good transfer resistance, water resistance, and food oil resistance at the same time, compared to the blank (Formulation 3). In particular, the transfer resistance, water resistance, and food oil resistance tests for Formulation 2 showed very little transference. The transfer resistance and water resistance tests for Formulation 5 (comprising poly(β-pinene) with a MW = ~2,641 g / mol) showed very little transference; however, the increased transfer to a cotton cloth for the food oil resistance test indicates that having a molecular weight > 2,641 g / mol is important for performance.

[0293] Formulation 6 (comprising poly(limonene)) did not show an improvement in food oil resistance compared to the blank (Formulation 7), which did not comprise a film former.

[0294] Food oil resistance is reflected by color transfer. Those values, measured in the CIELAB color space (averages of three readings with an X-Rite COLOR-EYE 7000A spectrophotometer (X-Rite, Inc., Grand Rapids, MI) white cotton gives a value of 1.58)), are shown in TABLE 6. The lower the number, the less color has transferred, hence the better the transfer resistance. Transfer resistance and food oil resistance values were also measured for Formulations 2 and 4-6 and provided values ranging from 6.15 to 27.84.- 49 -

[0295] TABLE 6. Food Oil Resistance Values for Tested FormulationsFormulation Example 3: Presence of Plasticizers

[0296] TABLE 7 shows formulations where various plasticizing oils or gums were added to the film former containing formulations.

[0297] TABLE 7. Formulations with Plasticizing Oils or Gums- 50 -1BENTONE GEL ISD V (Elementis Specialties, East Windsor, NJ);2CI 15850 (Sun Chemical Corporation, Parsippany, NJ);3Micro Titanium Dioxide (MT-100TV (Tayca Corporation, Osaka, Japan));4Isododecane (Presperse Corp., Somerset, NJ);5Polybutenes (Sigma-Aldrich, Inc., St. Louis, MO);6Adipic Acid / Diglycol Crosspolymer (Inolex (Philadephia, PA));7(Vigon-Azelis (East Stroudsburg, PA));8C48-Isoalkane, Polyester Elastomer (Momentive Performance Materials, Inc., Niskayuna, New York);9Dodecane, Epoxydized Soybean Oil (Momentive Performance Materials, Inc., Niskayuna, New York);10SR1000 Resin (Momentive Performance Materials, Inc., Niskayuna, New York);11Dimethicone gum (SILSOFT SE30 (Momentive Performance Materials, Inc., Niskayuna, New York)).

[0298] The formulations in TABLE 7 comprising plasticizing oils and gums showed good transfer-, water- and food-oil-resistance performance, especially when compared to the blank (no film former), and also when compared to the benchmark (MQ / gum).

[0299] In order to confirm plasticization actually occurred, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) experiments were conducted using different plasticizer / film former (poly(β- Pinene) ((PBP)) ratios. FIG.6 shows the DMA curves obtained as a function of temperature using polybutene (also known as polyisobutylene (PIB)) as the plasticizer.- 51 -

[0300] As can be seen from, for example, the two peaks in FIG.6 at 70% (green curve) and 80% (orange curve), PBP concentration, at ~ 20 °C and ~ 45 °C, respectively, confirms that new glass transitions (Tg’s) are occurring, which is strong evidence for a plasticization effect, as opposed to, for example, a mere solubilization effect.Formulation Example 4: Pigments & Dyes

[0301] TABLE 8 shows the components in Formulation 18 which include untreated pigments. For Formulation 18, the presence of poly(ß-pinene) provided exceptionally low color transfer performance.
