AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication systems face issues with UE-initiated beam reports (UEI-BRs) due to unclear configurations of reference signals for current and new/candidate beams across different serving cells, unclear content and manner of transmitting UEI-BRs, and simultaneous transmission of multiple UEI-BRs, leading to inefficiencies in beam quality maintenance and increased overhead.

Method used

The UE is configured to measure and report beam quality using explicit or default reference signals, transmit UEI-BRs based on predefined triggering events, and prioritize reports based on configured resources and quality thresholds, allowing for efficient and timely beam adjustments.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces downlink/uplink overhead and UE power consumption while maintaining high communication quality by enabling timely beam switching and optimizing UEI-BR transmission.

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TRANSMITTING USER EQUIPMENT-INITIATED BEAM REPORTS IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] This document generally describes methods and devices operating in wireless communication systems such as (but not limited to) the ones described in 5G standard documents, known as 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) communication systems. More particularly, the methods and devices enable transmitting user equipment (UE) initiated (UEI) beam reports (BRs) based on UEI-BR triggering events.BACKGROUND

[0003] This background description is provided for the purpose of generally presenting the context of the disclosure and the technical problems. Work of the presently named inventors, to the extent it is described in this background section, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art against the present disclosure.

[0004] Within the worldwide effort to prepare new radio (NR) Release 19 (Rel-19) technical specifications (TSs) , a working item related to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) usage aims to extend and enhance MIMO performance built on legacy releases (i.e., previous TSs releases) . A NR Rel-19 MIMO objective is to implement a UE-initiated beam report. In legacy, a network (NW) entity (which is an NW node in communication with the UE) determines and triggers the UE to submit a beam report that may lead to a beam switch procedure. The NW entity may configure the UE via a channel state information (CSI) report configuration (e.g., CSI-ReportConfig message) for the beam measurement and report. Within the CSI report configuration, the NW entity may configure a list of synchronization signal block (SSB) or channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) resources for beam measurement. The NW entity may transmit these reference signals (RSs) on different SSB / CSI-RS resources using  different beams. The NW entity may configure the UE to report the beam quality (e.g., layer 1 reference signal received power (L1-RSRP) or layer 1 signal to interference plus noise ratio (L1-SINR) ) for plural beams. The NW entity may configure the UE to measure the configured signals and transmit the beam report in a periodic, a semi-persistent or an aperiodic manner. Based on the received beam report, the NW entity may provide a beam activation / indication by indicating a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) or spatial relation info.

[0005] As a result of UE’s movement or rotation, or blockage, the beam quality of a beam as received by the UE may change as well. The NW entity has no or limited information when the beam quality changes due to UE’s circumstances to trigger a beam report at the proper time. To maintain good UE-received beam quality, the NW entity may trigger the beam report frequently, but the frequent beam measuring and reporting may cause too much downlink activating / triggering signaling overhead, uplink overhead for beam report and a high UE power consumption. To reduce the downlink / uplink overhead and UE power consumption, the NW entity may trigger the beam report less frequently. However, a low frequency of beam reporting may yield a lower UE-NW communication quality because the NW entity cannot timely identify UE-received beam quality degradation to direct switching to another beam. Therefore, one possible way to maintain the good beam quality with less downlink / uplink overhead and UE power consumption is to enable the UE to trigger the beam report (i.e., a UE-initiated beam report (UEI-BR) procedure of generating and transmitting a beam report) .

[0006] Currently, there are still some unresolved issues related to UEI-BRs. First, it is unclear whether the RS for a current beam and the RS for a new / candidate beam can be configured for or associated with different serving cells. If the RS for current beam and the RS for new / candidate beam can be configured for or associated with different serving cells, it is unclear how to compare the measurement quality of the RS for the current beam and the RS for the new / candidate beam from different serving cells. Moreover, if that RS for current beam and RS for new / candidate beam need to be configured for or associated with the same serving cells, the implicit determination of the RS for the current beam becomes unclear. The implicit determination of the RS for  current beam is based on quasi-co-located (QCL) beam RS of the indicated TCI state, which may be from a serving cell different from that of the RS for the new / candidate beam.

[0007] Second, given that an UEI-BR procedure (i.e., generating and transmitting an UEI-BR) may be triggered by multiple distinct triggering event (s) , the content and manner of transmitting UEI-BR based on some of triggering event (s) have remained an open issue. The design details include UEI-BR content, report container and RS configuration for the current and / or the new / candidate beam.

[0008] Third, coexistence of these multiple triggering events is another one issue. If multiple UEI-BRs corresponding to different triggering event (s) are triggered in a short time interval so that multiple UEI-BRs are due simultaneously, it is not yet clear how or whether the UE transmits the multiple UEI-BRs.SUMMARY

[0009] Regarding the first issue, when the current beam RS and the new / candidate beam RS cannot be configured for or transmitted using different component carriers (CCs) then: (i) the network configures one or more RS set (s) for plural CCs, (ii) an explicit or a default RS set is used for the current beam, or (iii) the UE does not perform measurement and reporting for the CC associated with the indicated TCI state. The UE may indicate whether it supports UEI-BR when the current beam and a new / candidate beam cannot be configured for or transmitted using different CCs. If the network has not configured the new / candidate beam, the UE may (i) find a reference CC with new / candidate beam RS, (ii) refrain from generating a UEI-BR for the service cell, or (iii) ignore the UEI-BR triggering event requiring to measure the new / candidate beam for the serving cell.

[0010] Regarding the second issue, the UEI-BR includes a trigger event indication, one or more RS indexes, and beam quality for the one or more RS indexes. In case of the second triggering event, the UE-BRI further specifies beam quality of the current beam. In case of the third triggering event, the UEI-BR further includes one or more activated TCI indexes and beam quality for each of the one or more activated TCI indexes. The beam quality may be reported in differential manner relative to a reference value.

[0011] Regarding the third issue, in some embodiments, the UE generates and submits a joint UEI-BR report. In other embodiments, the UE selects one of the UEI-BR reports due for reporting based on a triggering event priority rule.

[0012] The various embodiments described in detailed in the following sections are pertinent to 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology (RAT) , also known as 4G, 3GPP NR RAT, also known as 5G, 6G RAT and other RATs.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0021] Methods and devices described in this section embody techniques related to transmitting an UEI-BR triggered by one (or more than one) different UEI-BR triggering events. The NW configures a UE to measure reference signals (RSs) transmitted from one or more beams and to decide when and how to generate and transmit a UEI-BR. Upon detecting an UEI-BR triggering event, the UE then reports quantities (e.g., layer 1 reference signal received power (L1-RSRP) or layer 1 signal to interference plus noise ratio (L1-SINR) ) representing each measured beam’s quality. Upon receiving the UEI-BR, the NW may provide a beam activation / indication (e.g., by sending a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) and / or spatial relationship info) to the UE. The embodiment descriptions in this section refer to the accompanying drawings. The same reference numbers in different drawings identify the same or similar elements. The detailed descriptions do not preclude other embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. The embodiments are not limited to the described configurations but may be extended to other arrangements.

[0022] Prior to discussing techniques related to transmitting an UEI-BR that may be triggered by one (or more than one) different UEI-BR triggering events, a wireless communication system 100 is described based on Fig. 1. The wireless communication system 100 includes a UE 102, a base station (BS) 104, a base station 106, and a core network (CN) 110. The base stations 104 and 106 operate in a RAN 105 connected to the CN 110. The CN 110 includes an evolved packet core (EPC) 111 and / or a fifth generation (5G) core (5GC) 160. The CN 110 may alternatively or additionally include a sixth generation (6G) core. The NW entity as further invoked when discussing various embodiments may be a base station such as 104 or 106, or a physical device hosting and executing CN modules or functions.

[0023] The base station 104 covers one or more cells (e.g., cells 123 and 125) with one or more transmit and / or receive points (TRPs) , and the base station 106 similarly covers one or more cells (e.g., cell 126) with one or more TRPs. For example, the base station 104 operates cell 123 with TRPs 107-1 and 107-2, and cell 125 with TRP 107-3, while the base station 106 operates cell 127 with TRPs 108-1 and 108-2. The cells 123 and 125 are operated on the same carrier frequency / frequencies. The cell  127 can be operated on the same carrier frequency / frequencies as the cells 123 and 125. Alternatively, the cell 127 can be operated on different carrier frequency / frequencies from the cells 123 and 125. The base station 104 may connect to each of the TRPs 107-1, 107-2 and 107-3 via a fiber connection or an Ethernet connection. If the base station 104 is a gNB, the cells 123 and 125 are NR cells. If the base station 104 is an (ng-) eNB, the cells 123 and 125 are evolved universal terrestrial radio access (EUTRA) cells. Similarly, if the base station 106 is a gNB, the cell 127 is an NR cell, and if the base station 106 is an (ng-) eNB, the cell 127 is an EUTRA cell. The cells 123, 125, and 127 can be in the same Radio Access Network Notification Areas (RNA) or different RNAs. In general, the RAN 105 may connect any number of base stations such as 104 and 106 to the CN 110, and each of the base stations can cover one, two, three, or any other suitable number of cells.

[0024] The UE 102 can support at least a 5G NR (or simply, “NR” ) or E-UTRA air interface to communicate with the base station 104 via the TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2 and / or TRP-3. Similarly, the UE 102 can support at least a 5G NR (or simply, “NR” ) or E-UTRA air interface to communicate with the base station 106 via the TRP 108-1 and / or TRP 108-2. Each of the base stations 104, 106 can connect to the CN 110 via an interface (e.g., S1 or NG interface) . The base stations 104 and 106 also can be interconnected via an interface (e.g., X2 or Xn interface) for interconnecting NG RAN nodes.

[0025] When a base station (e.g., the base station 104 or 106) transmits downlink (DL) data via a TRP (e.g., the TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2, TRP 107-3, TRP 108-1 or TRP 108-2) , the base station 104 generates a packet including the DL data and transmits the packet to the TRP 107-1. For example, the packet can be a fronthaul transport protocol data unit. The TRP extracts the DL data from the packet and transmits the DL data. The base station 104 may include control information for time-critical control and management information directly related to the DL data in the packet, and the TRP may transmit the DL data in accordance with the control information. The DL data may include In-phase and Quadrature (IQ) data, a physical layer bit sequence, or a medium access control (MAC) packet data unit (PDU) . When the TRP receives uplink data (UL) data from a UE (e.g., UE 102) , the TRP generates a packet including the UL data and  transmits the packet to the base station 104. The UL data may include IQ data, a physical layer bit sequence, or a MAC PDU.

[0026] Among other components, the EPC 111 includes a Mobility Management Entity (MME) 112, a Serving Gateway (SGW) 114, and a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW) 116. The MME 112 is configured to manage authentication, registration, paging, and other related functions. The SGW 114 is configured to transfer user-plane packets related to audio calls, video calls, Internet traffic, etc. The PGW 116 provides connectivity from the UE 102 to one or more external packet data networks (e.g., an Internet network and / or an Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network) . The EPC 111 may include other modules not illustrated in Fig. 1. The 5GC 160 includes an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) 162, a Session Management Function (SMF) 164, and a User Plane Function (UPF) 166. The AMF 162 is configured to manage authentication, registration, paging, and other related functions. The SMF 164 is configured to manage PDU sessions. The EPC 111 is hosted (i.e., run on) one or more physical devices. The UPF 166 is configured to transfer user-plane packets related to audio calls, video calls, Internet traffic, etc. The 5GC 160 may include other functions and plural instances of the same function runt on the same of different physical devices.

[0027] As illustrated in Fig. 1, the base station 104 supports cells 123 and 125, and the base station 106 supports a cell 127. The cells 123, 125, and 127 may partially overlap, so that the UE 102 can select, reselect, or hand over from one of the cells 123, 125, and 127 to another. To directly exchange messages or information, the base station 104 and base station 106 can support an X2 or Xn interface. In general, the CN 110 can connect to any suitable number of base stations supporting NR cells and / or EUTRA cells.

[0028] The base station 104 is equipped with processing hardware 130 that includes one or more general-purpose processors (e.g., CPUs) 132 and / or special-purpose processing units. The processing hardware 130 further includes a transmitter 134 configured to transmit DL data, and DL reference signals to user devices (e.g., UE 102) via one or more TRPs (e.g., TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2 and / or TRP 107-3) . The processing hardware 130 also includes a receiver 136 configured to receive UL data  and / or UL reference signals from the one or more user devices via the one or more TRPs (e.g., TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2 and / or TRP 107-3) . The transmitter 134 and the receiver 136 may use same antennas and RF front end electronics and may be implemented as a transceiver. The processing hardware 130 further includes non-transitory computer-readable memory 138 storing machine-readable instructions executable on the one or more general-purpose processors, and / or special-purpose processing units 132, making the base station 104 to operate as a UEI-BR configuration manager. The base station 106 includes processing hardware that is substantially similar to processing hardware 130. The phrase “substantively similar” as used in this document indicates that although not strictly identical, two substantially similar items (components or actions) do not different in a manner significant for the intended purpose. For example, the base stations achieve the same functionality although one may have separate transmitter and receiver and the other a transceiver.

[0029] The UE 102 is equipped with processing hardware 140 that includes one or more general-purpose processors and / or special-purpose processing units 142 and non-transitory computer-readable memory 148 storing machine-readable instructions executable on the one or more general-purpose processors and / or special-purpose processing units 142. The UE 102 includes a transmitter 144 configured to transmit UL data and / or UL reference signals to the base station 104 or 106 via one or more TRPs (e.g., TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2, TRP 107-3, TRP 108-1 and / or TRP 108-2) . The UE 102 also includes a receiver 146 configured to receive DL data and / or DL reference signals from the base station 104 or 106 via the one or more TRPs (e.g., TRP 107-1, TRP 107-2, TRP 107-3, TRP 108-1 and / or TRP 108-2) . The processing hardware 140 is configured to perform various techniques (e.g., RS measurements and reporting) related to the UEI-BRs that can be triggered by different UEI-BR triggering events.

[0030] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure / activate the UE to perform transmission of an UEI-BR procedure. When the NW entity configures / activates the UE to perform the UEI-BR procedure, the UE may transmit a UEI-BR on a pre-configured / pre-indicated UL resource / channel or on a dynamically allocated UL resource / channel. In some embodiments, the UE transmits a UEI-BR, when the UE detects a UEI-BR triggering event. In some embodiments, the UE transmits a UEI-BR,  when the UE detects a UEI-BR triggering event for a number of times. The UEI-BR may be a beam report or a CSI report for reporting L1-RSRP and / or L1-SINR. The UEI-BR may include a SSB resource indicator (SSBRI) , CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI) , and / or a (Capability) Index.

[0031] In some embodiments, a NW entity may provide, to the UE, configuration (s) of a UEI-BR for a serving cell or a cell group. The configuration (s) of UEI-BR may include or refer to one or more of: a measurement RS configuration for a first RS, a measurement RS configuration for a second RS and an indication of the mode of UEI-BR.

[0032] Regarding the measurement RS configuration (s) for the first RS, it can be referred to as or replaced with the measurement RS configuration (s) for the current beam. In some cases, the current beam may be referred to the indicated TCI state (e.g., a joint / DL / UL TCI state) , a QCL assumption or a joint / DL / UL TCI state applied for a channel or RS not following / applying the indicated TCI state. In other cases, the measurement RS configuration (s) for the current beam may be implicitly derived from a quasi-co-located (QCL) RS (e.g., a CSI-RS or a TRS) of indicated TCI state or the SSB, which is quasi-co-located with the QCL RS in the indicated TCI state. Alternatively, the measurement RS configuration (s) for the current beam explicitly configured by a radio resource control (RRC) or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) .

[0033] Regarding measurement RS configuration (s) for the second RS, it can be referred to as or replaced with the measurement RS configuration (s) for the new / candidate beam. In some cases, the measurement RS configuration (s) for the new / candidate beam may be explicitly configured by an RRC (e.g., reusing legacy configuration of RS measurement or in TCI-State) or a MAC-CE. In other cases, the measurement RS configuration (s) for the new / candidate beam may be implicitly derived from QCL RS (s) of activated TCI state (s) , or implicitly derived from QCL RS (s) of configured TCI state (s) .

[0034] The NW entity may indicate / configure using the indication of the mode of UEI-BR whether the UE to use a first mode or a second mode (discussed below) of performing UE-initiated beam report for a serving cell, a multiple of CC (s) , a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) cell group, or a cell group.

[0035] Fig. 2 is a signal diagram illustrating the first mode 200 of performing a UEI-BR procedure. If the NW entity configures the UE to operate a first mode of UE-initiated beam report (via the indication of the mode of UEI-BR in the UEI-BR configuration) , when the UE 102 detects 210 a UEI-BR triggering event, the UE transmits 220 a request signal on a PUCCH to request an UL resource for a UL channel to transmit an UEI-BR. In one example, upon detecting 210 a UEI-BR triggering event for a number of times, the UE transmits 220 a request signal on a PUCCH to request an UL resource for a UL channel to transmit an UEI-BR. In this case, the capability of the PUCCH or the length of the request signal may be one-bit. Alternatively, the capability of the PUCCH or the length of the request signal may be multiple-bits. The request signal may be a special scheduling request (SR) or a new UCI (i.e., an UCI other than normal SR / HARQ-ACK / CSI, with HARQ-ACK standing for hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement) . The UE 102 may transmit a special SR for requesting an UL resource for a UL channel to transmit an UEI-BR (e.g., a PUSCH dedicated for transmitting UEI-BR or other UL channel (such as PUCCH) dedicated for transmitting UEI-BR) . The UE 102 may transmit a normal SR for requesting a PUSCH for transmitting UL data, which may not be dedicated for transmitting UEI-BR. This may imply that when the NW entity receives the PUSCH corresponding to the normal SR, the NW entity may not know whether a UEI-BR is transmitted on the PUSCH, and / or may perform blindly decoding on the PUSCH assuming a UEI-BR may or may not transmitted.

[0036] The NW entity (e.g., BS 104) then transmits 230, to the UE 102, a first response (e.g., a first DCI) , in response to receiving the request signal. In the first DCI, the NW entity indicates an UL resource for a UL channel to transmit the UE-initiated beam report. The UE 102 then generates 240 the UEI-BR and transmits 250 the UEI-BR on the UL resource for the UL channel indicated by the first DCI. The UL channel may be a configured grant (CG) physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , that is a CG-PUSCH, a dynamic grant (DG) PUSCH, that is DG-PUSCH, or a PUCCH.

[0037] In some cases, if there is an available UL channel, the UE may skip transmitting the request signal to the NW entity, and / or the UE may just transmit the UE-initiated beam report on the available UL channel. The UE may determine whether  there is available UL channel by itself (e.g., by considering waiting time till next transmission occasion of an UL channel) .

[0038] Fig. 3 is a signal diagram illustrating the second mode 300 of performing a UEI-BR procedure. If the NW entity (i.e., BS 104) configures the UE 102 to operate a second mode of UEI-BR (via the indication of the mode of UEI-BR in the UEI-BR configuration) , the NW entity may pre-configure (for example, by transmitting 308 an RRC) one or more UL resources for UL channel (s) usable by the UE 102 for transmitting an UEI-BR. Then, when the UE 102 detects 310 (which is similar to 210) an UEI-BR triggering event, the UE 102 transmits 320 a notification signal on a PUCCH to notify using one of the preconfigured UL resources for transmitting the UEI-BR. Similarly, in one example, upon the UE 102 detecing 310 a UEI-BR triggering event for a number of times, the UE transmits 320 a notification signal on a PUCCH to notify using one of the preconfigured UL resources for transmitting an UEI-BR. In this case, the capability of the PUCCH or the length of the notification signal may be one-bit. Alternatively, the capability of the PUCCH or the length of the notification signal may be multiple-bits. The notification signal may be a special scheduling request (SR) or a UCI other than normal SR / HARQ-ACK / CSI. The NW entity 104 may optionally (as suggested by using a dashed line instead of a continuous line) transmit 330 a second response (e.g., a second DCI or other DL signal) to the UE, in response to receiving the notification signal. The UE 102 then generates 340 the UEI-BR and transmits 350 the UEI-BR on the UL resource for the UL channel notified by the notification signal. The UL channel may be a CG-PUSCH) , a DG-PUSCH, or a PUCCH.

[0039] The NW entity may indicate or configure a dedicated RRC parameter to indicate which mode of UE-initiate beam report is operated. The dedicated RRC parameter may be configured for a serving cell or a cell group. In some other embodiments, the NW entity may indicate, or the UE may determine which mode of UEI-BR is operated, based on whether the NW entity has (pre-) configured one or more resources for a UL channel usable for transmitting the UEI-BR. For example, if the NW entity does not (pre-) configure one or more resources for a UL channel for UE-initiated beam report for a serving cell or a cell group, the UE may determine the first mode is operated for the serving cell or the cell group. Conversely, when the NW entity has  (pre-) configured one or more resources for a UL channel for UE-initiated beam report for a serving cell or a cell group, the UE determines that the second mode is operated for the serving cell or the cell group.

[0040] The UE may transmit the UEI-BR, the request signal or the notification signal, in response to detecting at least one UEI-BR triggering events. The UE may be able to support a subset (or all and others) among the following UEI-BR triggering events.

[0041] An Event-1 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of the current beam is worse than a first quality threshold.

[0042] An Event-2 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of at least one new / candidate beam becomes a second quality threshold better than the quality of the current beam; in other words, a difference between the quality of at least one new / candidate beam and the quality of the current beam exceeds (or is equal to) the second quality threshold.

[0043] An Event-3 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of a new / candidate beam is better than a third quality threshold.

[0044] An Event-4 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of the current beam is worse than a fourth quality threshold, and the quality of at least one new / candidate beam is better than a fifth quality threshold.

[0045] An Event-5 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the absolute value of the difference between the quality of the current beam and the quality of at least one new / candidate beam is less than a sixth quality threshold.

[0046] An Event-6 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the current beam is not in the best K>1 beams (out of configured beams for measurement and reporting) .

[0047] An Event-7 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of at least one new / candidate beam becomes a seventh quality threshold value better than the RS derived from the activated TCI state with the M-th best quality; here, the value of M may be configured by the NW entity. A variation of Event 7 is Event-7a that triggers the UE to transmit a UEI-BR when the quality of at least one new / candidate beam, such as L1-RSRP, becomes an eighth quality threshold better than the RS  derived from the activated TCI state with the worst quality. Another variation of Event 7 is Event-7b that triggers the UE to transmit a UEI-BR when the quality of at least one new / candidate beam becomes a ninth quality threshold better than the RS derived from the activated TCI state with the best quality.

[0048] An Event-8 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of M>1 new / candidate beam become a tenth quality threshold better than the quality of the current beam.

[0049] An Event-9 triggering the UE to transmit a UEI-BR occurs when the quality of at least one new / candidate beam becomes an eleventh threshold value better than the configured reference RS (can be SSB or CSI-RS) .

[0050] The first to eleventh quality thresholds may be configured or indicated by the NW or may have default values. In one example, the first to eleventh quality thresholds may not be the same threshold values.

[0051] As already mentioned above, the NW entity may configure / indicate, to the UE, one or more UEI-BR configurations. In some cases, the UE may perform transmission of UEI-BR based on an UEI-BR configuration. In some other cases, the NW entity may configure / indicate reported quantity (or quantities) of an UEI-BR (i.e., UEI-BR content) via the UEI-BR configuration.

[0052] In some embodiments, CSI report configuration of UEI-BR may be the same as that of a CSI report not for UEI-BR (e.g., CSI-ReportConfig) . In some embodiments, the CSI report configuration for UEI-BR is a CSI-ReportConfig that includes an RRC parameter indicating the CSI report configuration is for UEI-BR. The CSI report configuration for configuring UEI-BR may be CSI-ReportConfig that does not include an RRC parameter indicating time domain behavior (e.g., a reportConfigType) .

[0053] Regarding RS configuration for UEI-BR considering carrier aggregation (CA) case, the NW entity may configure the UE as to whether the measurement RS (s) for current beam and the measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam are (allowed to be) configured for or transmitted from different serving cell (s) . The NW entity may enable or configure the UE to measure the RS (s) for the current beam and the RS (s) for a new / candidate beam from the same or different serving cell (s) . The UE may  determine / derive that the RS (s) for the current beam as the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state.

[0054] If the current beam RS and the new / candidate beam RS can be configured for or transmitted from different CCs, the NW entity may configure the UE with a quality threshold. The quality threshold may be configured per CC or per cell group. In some embodiments, the UE may compare the quality of measured RS (s) associated with the current beam and the quality of measured RS (s) associated with the new / candidate beam by applying the quality threshold. In some cases, the UE compares the quality of measured RS (s) associated with the current beam and the quality of measured RS (s) associated with the new / candidate beam by applying the quality threshold selectively, if the measured RS (s) associated with the current beam and the measured RS (s) associated with the new / candidate beam are configured for or transmitted from different serving cell (s) .

[0055] However, in some cases, the current beam RS and the new / candidate beam RS cannot be configured for or transmitted from different CCs. Such situation occurs when (i) the RS (s) for measuring the current beam and the RS (s) for measuring the new / candidate beam are configured for or transmitted from different serving cell (s) , and / or (ii) the NW entity configures the UE to measure the RS (s) for the current beam and the RS (s) for new / candidate beam configured for or transmitted from the same serving cell. The UE and / or the NW entity may then perform according to one of one of the following alternatives (i.e., embodiments) .

[0056] A first alternative is the NW entity configures a new / candidate beam RS set including RS (s) from multiple serving cell (s) or configure multiple new / candidate beam RS set (s) , each of which is associated with one serving cell. In this case, the UE may select RS (s) or an RS set corresponding to the serving cell with QCL RS of the indicated TCI state as the RS (s) for measuring the current beam. The UE may determine that RS (s) or the RS set not corresponding to the serving cell with QCL RS of indicated TCI state are deactivated.

[0057] A second alternative is the NW entity explicitly configures an RS set or one or more RS (s) as RS (s) for measuring the current beam. In this case, the UE may use or measure the explicit RS set or one or more RS (s) as RS (s) for measuring the  current beam selectively, only if the serving cell with the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state is different from the serving cell where measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam is configured / transmitted.

[0058] A third alternative is the UE uses default RS (s) as RS (s) measuring the current beam, if the serving cell with the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state is different from the serving cell where RS (s) for measuring the new / candidate beam is configured / transmitted. In one example of default RS (s) may be the SSB selected in most recent random access (RA) procedure, or the RS providing QCL assumption for receiving the CORESET with the lowest CORESET ID in the serving cell (or active bandwidth part (BWP) ) where the current beam quality is to be measured, or the RS providing QCL assumption for receiving CORESET with ID #0 in the serving cell (or active BWP) where current beam quality is to be measured. Here CORESET indicates a ControlResourceSet, which is a set of physical resources and / or parameters usable to carry PDCCH (Physical Downlink Control Channel) and DCI (downlink channel information) .

[0059] A fourth alternative is the UE refrains from performing the UEI-BR procedure (i.e., generating and transmitting an UEI-BR) or refrains from detecting the UEI-BR triggering event involving measuring the current beam quality on the serving cell #Awith the indicated TCI state applied, if serving cell #B (where the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state is configured for or transmitted from serving cell #B) is different from serving cell #C (where measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam is configured for or transmitted from serving cell #C) . In this case, for example, serving cell #Aand serving cell #C may be the same. Alternatively or additionally, in a variation of the fourth alternative, the UE refrains from performing the UEI-BR procedure or refrains from detecting a UEI-BR triggering event involving measuring current beam quality on the one or more serving cell (s) with indicated TCI state applied. For such alternative, the NW entity may transmit a MAC CE for TCI activation / indication for multiple serving cell (s) or CC (s) . Yet again, alternatively or additionally, in another variation of the fourth alternative, the UE refrains from performing the UEI-BR procedure or refrains from detecting UEI-BR triggering event involving measuring the current beam quality on  serving cell #B (where the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state is configured for or transmitted from serving cell #B) .

[0060] In some embodiments, the NW entity may not configure measurement RS for a new / candidate beam for each configured / activated serving cell with UEI-BR configured / performed. The NW entity may instead configure measurement RS for a new / candidate beam for a subset of configured / activated serving cell (s) with UEI-BR configured / performed.

[0061] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures the UE with configuration (s) of performing UEI-BR for a serving cell, the NW entity may further configure / indicate, to the UE, whether measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam is configured for the serving cell. In some cases, the NW entity may configure an RRC signaling to explicitly indicate whether measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam is configured for the serving cell.

[0062] In some embodiments, if the NW entity does not configure measurement RS(s) for new / candidate beam for a serving cell with UEI-BR configured, the UE may perform one of the followings actions.

[0063] In some embodiments, the UE measures an RS set for a new / candidate beam configured for or transmitted from a reference serving cell. One example of the reference serving cell is a serving cell where a MAC CE for multi-CC TCI activation / indication is transmitted. The MAC CE for multi-CC TCI activation / indication may indicate that the indicated TCI state is applied for the serving cell without measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam configured. The NW entity may ensure to configure measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam for the serving cell where the MAC CE for multi-CC TCI activation / indication is transmitted. In some cases, the NW entity may refrain from transmitting a MAC CE for multi-CC TCI activation / indication on a serving cell without measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam configured or without UEI-BR configured / performed. Another example of the reference serving cell is a PCell, a PSCell or a PUCCH-Cell. Here PCell stands for a primary cell to which the UE initially connects, and PSCell is a primary secondary cell pertaining to the secondary cell group in dual connection-related (DS) techniques. PUCCH-Cell then stands for a serving cell with PUCCH resource (s) configured / transmitted. Thus, the NW entity may  ensure to configure measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam for one of PCell, PSCell or PUCCH-Cell. Yet another example of the reference serving cell is the serving cell with the lowest serving cell index in the cell group to which the serving cell without measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam configured pertains. In some cases, the NW entity may ensure to configure measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam for a serving cell with the lowest serving cell index in a cell group.

[0064] In some other embodiments, the UE does not perform UEI-BR for the serving cell without measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam configured. In yet other embodiments, the UE does not detect UEI-BR triggering event (s) involving measuring measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam for a serving cell without measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam configured.

[0065] Fig. 4 is a flowchart illustrating UE behavior according to various embodiments described above. A first inquiry 460 is whether the current beam RS and the candidate beam RS are configured for or transmitted from different CCs. If the answer to this first inquiry is “YES” , then (in some embodiments) the UE compares 462 beam quality of the current beam and of the candidate beam using a quality threshold per CC or per cell group. If the answer to the first inquiry is “NO” , then (in some embodiments) UE’s following actions depend on the response to a second inquiry 464 as to whether the UE is configured to perform the UEI-BR procedure when the current beam RS and the candidate beam RSs are on the same CC.

[0066] If the answer to this second inquiry is “YES” , then the UE generates 466 the UEI-BR by (i) selecting another RS for the CC with QCL RC of indicated TCI state, (ii) using an explicit or (iii) a default configuration for the current beam. If the answer to the second inquiry is “NO” , then the UE does not generate (or refrains from generating) 468 UEI-BR on the one or more CC with indicated TCI state applied or on one the CC with the QCL RS of the indicated TCI state.

[0067] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure triggering event (s) for a serving cell with the UEI-BR procedure configured / performed. The NW entity may configure at least two of a first triggering event (e.g., Event-2 described above) , a second triggering event (e.g., Event-1 described above) , and a third triggering event (e.g., Event-7 described above) for a serving cell with the UEI-BR procedure configured.

[0068] Fig. 5 is a flowchart of a method 500 performed by a UE able to generate and transmit a UEI-BR triggered by one among at least two configured triggering events. The at least two configured UEI-BR triggering events may be any combination of the first, the second, and the third triggering events or all of them and potentially also other UE-supported UEI-BR triggering events. The method 500 may first include optionally (as suggested by the dashed line as opposed to a solid line) transmitting 502 the UE capability for supporting UEI-BR indicating that the UE is able to operate in the first mode, the second mode, or both in the first and the second mode, and / or UE-supported UEI-BR triggering events including the at least two among the first, second, and third triggering events. The method 500 then includes receiving 504 a NW message conveying a UEI-BR configuration (e.g., CSI-ReportConfig) . The method 500 then includes measuring 506 RSs to assess the current beam quality and at least one candidate beam quality. Note that if operating in the second mode, the UE receives an RRC configuring UL resources for transmitting the UEI-BR as in step 308 before step 510 (i.e., an optional step 508 not illustrated) .

[0069] The method 500 further includes detecting 510 at least one UEI-BR triggering event based on the current beam quality and / or the at least one candidate beam quality. The method 500 then includes transmitting 520 a request (e.g., an SR) or a notification signal for an UL resource for transmitting the UEI-BR, and then, optionally (as suggested by the dashed line as opposed to a solid line) , receiving 530 a control message in response to the request or notification signal. The UE then performs a UEI-BR procedure including generating 540 and transmitting 550 the UEI-BR based on the UEI-BR configuration and including content associated with the at least one UEI-BR triggering event. That is, the UEI-BR has a first content associated with one of the triggering events different from a second content associated with another one of the triggering events. Steps 510, 520, 530, 540, and 550 are similar to steps 210 / 310, 220 / 320, 230 / 330, 240 / 340, and 250 / 350, respectively.

[0070] If the NW entity has configured the UE to perform UEI-BR procedure (i.e., generating and transmitting a UEI-BR) based on the first triggering event, upon detecting the first triggering event one or more times within a time interval (pre-defined or configured by the NW entity) , the UE transmits a first UEI-BR. For example, a first  UEI-BR triggered by the first triggering event may include: one or more RS indexes for candidate beam (s) , beam quality values of the candidate beam (s) , and the beam quality of the current beam (if thus enabled / configured) . The UEI-BR may include absolute beam quality values or differential beam quality values relative to a reference (first) absolute candidate beam quality value.

[0071] If the NW entity configured the UE to perform the UEI-BR procedure upon detecting the second triggering event one or more time (s) within a time interval (pre-defined or configured by the NW entity) , the UE transmits a second UEI-BR. The second UEI-BR may include an indication that the second triggering event detection in one serving cell triggered the UEI-BR. This indication may be a one-bit indication, a multi-bit indication, or a bitmap. In one example, the one-bit indication signals that the second trigger event has been detected on one serving cell. In one example, the one-bit indication signals that the second trigger event has been detected relative to the serving cell configured with CSI report configuration for the second UEI-BR. The UE may use the multi-bit indication to indicate relative to which serving cell has the second triggering event been detected. For example, the multi-bit indication may indicate (only) one serving cell in which the UE detected the second triggering event. In another example, the bit length of the multi-bit indication corresponds to the number of serving cell (s) configured with UEI-BR based on the second triggering event. Alternatively, the bit length of the multi-bit indication is log2N with N being the number of serving cell (s) configured with UEI-BR based on the second triggering event. In some cases, the UE may use a bitmap to indicate that in which serving cell (s) has the second triggering event been detected. For example, the bitmap may indicate that the UE has detected the second triggering event in one or more serving cell (s) . The bit length of the bitmap may be associated with the number of serving cell (s) configured with UEI-BR based on the second triggering event. Thus, the bit length N of the bitmap may be the number of serving cell (s) configured with UEI-BR based on the second triggering event.

[0072] Further, the second UEI-BR includes one or more RS index (s) . For example, if the NW entity configures the UE with measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam (s) , the UE may measure and / or report measurement quality for the new / candidate beam (s) , respectively. The UE may select the one or more RS index (s)  (e.g., measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam) without pre-specified or pre-defined condition (s) . However, in some other cases, the UE selects the one or more RS index (s) among the measurement RS (s) for the new / candidate beam (s) based on a condition (e.g., a condition pre-configured by the NW entity) . For example, the UE may select RS index (s) among the measurement RS (s) for the new / candidate beam (s) with the best X measurement quality (e.g., L1-RSRP / L1-SINR / L3-RSRP) . Value of X may be configured / indicated by the NW entity.

[0073] Further yet, the second UEI-BR includes measured beam quality values (e.g., L1-RSRP / L1-SINR / L3-RSRP) for the reported one or more RS index (s) . The UE may report the absolute L1-RSRP value for the first reported RS index and differential L1-RSRP value for other RS index (es) based on the measured L1-RSRP for the first reported RS index.

[0074] The second UEI-BR also includes an index of the current beam or the indicated TCI state and / or corresponding measurement quality. In some cases, the NW entity may configure whether the UE should report the beam quality (i.e., RS measurement result) for the current beam (s) or the indicated TCI state. In some other cases, if the UE reports the candidate beam quality for the reported RS index (es) (i.e., for new / candidate beam (s) ) and that for the current beam (s) (or the indicated TCI state) , the UE may report the absolute L1-RSRP for one of the reported new / candidate beam (s) and current beam (s) (or the indicated TCI state) with highest L1-RSRP measured, and report differential L1-RSRP for other reported RS index (es) and / or current beam (s) (or the indicated TCI state) based on the measured L1-RSRP for the beam or RS with absolute L1-RSRP reported. The UE may further report an indicator indicating the beam or RS index with absolute L1-RSRP reported. In one example, the UE may report an indicator indicating whether it reports absolute L1-RSRP based on the current beam (or the indicated TCI state) or a new / candidate beam. If the UE reports the absolute L1-RSRP is based on a new / candidate beam, the UE may report the absolute L1-RSRP for the first reported RS index and differential L1-RSRP for other reported RS index / indexes and the current beam (or the indicated TCI state) . Otherwise, the UE may report absolute L1-RSRP for current beam (s) (or the indicated TCI state) , and differential L1-RSRP for the reported RS index (es) . Table 1 illustrates an example for  the second UEI-BR report that the UE generates and transmits in response to the detecting a second triggering event (or Event-1) above. Table 2 illustrates an alternative second UEI-BR report in which the UE reports an absolute L1-RSRP for current beam.

[0075] Table 1: A second UEI-BR report based on the second triggering event (Event-1)

[0076] Table 2: Another second UEI-BR report based on the second triggering event

[0077] In some cases, if multiple serving cells are reported as having the second triggering event detected, the UE may report multiple indexes of current beams corresponding each of the reported multiple serving cells. The reported order of the multiple indexes of current beams may be dependent on the reported order of the serving cells having the second triggering event detected. For example, the reported order may depend on the manner in which each serving cell is mapped to a bit position of the bitmap (if included) .

[0078] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures the UE to perform the UEI-BR procedure based on the third triggering event (i.e., Event 7) , when the UE has detected the third triggering event for one or more time (s) within a predetermined time interval, the UE transmits a third UEI-BR. The UE may report one or more of the followings via the third UEI-BR: an index of the indicated TCI state and / or corresponding measurement quality, one or more pairs of RS indexes of a measurement RS for new / candidate beam and / or corresponding measurement quality (at least one of the reported measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam having a beam quality better than that of the QCL RS (s) of the activated TCI state with the M-th best measurement  quality) , an index of the activated TCI state with the M-th best measurement quality (among all activated TCI state (s) ) , a pair of an index of the activated TCI state with the M-th best measurement quality (among all activated TCI state (s) ) and corresponding measurement quality, and multiple pairs (e.g., M pairs) of an index of an activated TCI state and measurement quality of the activated TCI state. The UE may report different activated TCI state for the multiple pairs. Additionally, the UE may report at least one activated TCI state (s) with the M-th best measurement quality. In this case, the UE may report the activated TCI state (s) with top M measurement quality.

[0079] The third UEI-BR may further include beam quality values (also called measurement quality in this document) of all activated TCI state (s) . In this case, a payload size may be dynamically changed and / or may be dependent on the total number of activated TCI state (s) . The reporting order of measurement qualities may be based on activation order of corresponding TCI activation MAC CE or mapped TCI field codepoint identifier (ID) . Alternatively or additionally, the UE may report index (s) of all activated TCI state (s) along with corresponding measurement qualities. In some other cases, the UE may report the measurement quality based on the maximum number of activated TCI states (K_max) , which may be pre-defined (e.g., 8) or configured by the NW entity. If the number of activated TCI states (K) is smaller than the maximum number of activated TCI states, the UE may report padding bit (s) or default L1-RSRP for the remaining K_max-K TCI states.

[0080] The measurement quality (beam quality value) of a TCI state (e.g., indicated / activated TCI state) may be referred to as L1-RSRP / L1-SINR value of the QCL RS (s) of the TCI state. In these embodiments, an index of a TCI state (e.g., indicated / activated TCI state) may be referred to as TCI state ID of the TCI state. Alternatively or additionally, an index of a TCI state (e.g., indicated / activated TCI state) may be referred to as RS ID of the QCL RS (s) of the TCI state. Alternatively or additionally, an index of a TCI state (e.g., indicated / activated TCI state) may be referred to as SSB ID of a SSB providing QCL assumption for receiving the QCL RS (s) of the TCI state. Table 3 and Table 4 illustrate some examples for the UEI-BR based on the third triggering event (or Event-7) .

[0083] In some embodiments, the UE and / or the NW entity may determine which activated TCI states are reported in an UEI-BR. The UE and / or the NW entity may determine the activated TCI states reported in an UEI-BR, in response to or due to an activated TCI state (s) being dynamically changed. In some embodiments, the UE may transmit the UEI-BR based on the activate TCI state (s) at a reference time. In some cases, the reference time may be configured by the NW entity, or reported by the UE, or predefined. In some cases, the reference time may be based on: (i) K slots / symbols before the first or last symbol of the uplink channel carrying the UEI-BR, (ii) K slots / symbols before the first or last symbol of the uplink channel carrying the request signal or notification signal, (iii) K slots / symbols before or after the first or last symbol of a downlink channel scheduling the uplink channel carrying the UEI-BR, (iv) K slots / symbols before or after the first or last symbol of a response for a notification signal notifying usage of an UL resource of an uplink channel carrying the UEI-BR, (v) K  slots / symbols before or after the first or last symbol of the last or most recent monitoring window which triggers the UEI-BR, (vi) K slots / symbols before or after the start or end of the last or most recent prohibit timer, where the UE may refrain from triggering or transmitting an UEI-BR when the prohibit timer is running or not expired.

[0084] In some other embodiments, if activated TCI state (s) for a serving cell are updated / changed, the UE may perform at least one of the followings: (a) reset or restart a counter (s) for the third event detection for the serving cell, (b) reset or restart a timer (or timers) for the third event detection for the serving cell (s) , and / or (c) stop an on-going UEI-BR procedure. In this latest case, the UE may refrain from transmitting the UEI-BR or refrain from transmitting the request signal or the notification signal, where the on-going UEI-BR procedure has been triggered by the third triggering event.

[0085] In some embodiments, the UE may report a measurement quality of an activated TCI state by a differential value relative to a reference measurement quality. The reference measurement quality may be the measurement quality of the QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state. Alternatively, the reference measurement quality may be the measurement quality of the QCL RS (s) of the activated TCI state with the best measurement quality (reported in the same UEI-BR) . In yet another alternative, the reference measurement quality may be the measurement quality of the QCL RS (s) of the activated TCI state with the M-the best measurement quality among all activated TCI state (s) . The reference measurement quality may also be the measurement quality of the measurement RS for the new / candidate beam with the best measurement quality (reported in the same UEI-BR) .

[0086] In some embodiments, the UE may report the second UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR via PUCCH, PUSCH (e.g., DG-PUSCH and / or CG-PUSCH) , physical random access channel (PRACH) or UL channel associated with a 4-step contention-based random access (CBRA) , PRACH or UL channel associated with 2-step CBRA, or PRACH or UL channel associated with contention-free random access (CFRA) . When using PUCCH, the second UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR may be transmitted as uplink control information (UCI) . When using PUSCH, the second UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR may be UCI multiplexed on PUSCH, or a MAC CE transmitted / included by PUSCH. When using the PRACH or UL channel associated with a 4-step CBRA, the second  UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR may be UCI multiplexed on Msg3, or a MAC CE transmitted / included in Msg3. When using PRACH or UL channel associated with 2-step CBRA, the second UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR may be UCI multiplexed on MsgA, or a MAC CE transmitted or included in MsgA. When using PRACH or UL channel associated with CFRA, the second UEI-BR or the third UEI-BR may be a RA resource or occasion associated with one serving cell. In this case, the NW entity may realize which serving cell is detected with the second triggering event or the third triggering event by checking which RA resource or occasion is transmitted by the UE.

[0087] In some embodiments, the NW entity may not configure (or refrain from configuring) measurement RS (s) for a new / candidate beam for the second triggering event or the third triggering event. The NW entity may configure / indicate the UE to measure measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam configured for the first triggering event, for the second triggering event or the third triggering event. The measurement RS(s) for new / candidate beam for the first triggering event and those for the second and / or the third triggering event may be common or fully / partially overlapped.

[0088] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure measurement RS (s) for new / candidate beam for the second triggering event or for the third triggering event: (i) explicitly configuring them using an RRC and / or a MAC-CE (e.g., configured measurement RS (s) may be updated / activated / deactivated via a MAC CE transmitted from the NW entity) , (ii) implicitly configured by QCL RS (s) of activated TCI state (s) , or (iii) implicitly configured by QCL RS (s) of configured TCI state (s) .

[0089] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure measurement RS (s) for the current beam related to the second triggering event or the third triggering event (i) implicitly as QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state (e.g., joint / DL / UL TCI state) , (ii) implicitly as QCL RS (s) providing QCL assumption for a channel or RS not following / applying the indicated TCI state, or (iii) explicitly configured using an RRC or a MAC-CE. In one example, the measurement RS (s) for the current beam are configured by the NW entity and updated / activated / deactivated further upon the UE receiving a MAC CE transmitted from the NW entity. In other cases, the measurement RS configuration (s) for the current beam related to the second triggering event or the third triggering event may be implicitly derived from a quasi-co-located (QCL) RS (e.g., a  CSI-RS or a TRS) of indicated TCI state or the SSB, which is quasi-co-located with the QCL RS in the indicated TCI state.

[0090] In some embodiments, if measurement RS (s) for the current beam for the second triggering event is not configured by the NW entity, the UE may use or determine at least one of the followings as measurement RS (s) for the current beam: (i) QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state or QCL RS (s) of QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state, which may be dependent on which RS type (e.g., SSB, CSI-RS, TRS or CSI-RS for BM) is configured / indicated by the NW entity (see Examples 1-4 described below) , (ii) QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state, (iii) QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state and QCL RS (s) of QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state or (iv) one or more RS (s) explicitly configured by the NW entity.

[0091] In Example 1 related to (i) , the NW entity configures or indicates to the UE to measure SSB for current beam, and then, the UE may measure the SSB, which is the RS providing QCL assumption for receiving QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state (e.g., root QCL RS) . In Example 2, the NW entity configures or indicates to the UE to measure CSI-RS for current beam, and then, the UE may measure QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state. In Example 3, the NW entity configures or indicates to the UE to measure tracking reference signal (s) (TRS (s) ) for current beam, and then, the UE may measure a TRS, which is QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state. If QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state is a CSI-RS for beam measurement (BM) , the UE may measure a TRS, where QCL assumption for receiving the TRS is the SSB providing QCL assumption for receiving the CSI-RS for BM. Alternatively or additionally, if QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state is a CSI-RS for BM, the UE may measure the SSB providing QCL assumption for receiving the CSI-RS for BM. In Example 4, the NW entity configures or indicates to the UE to measure CSI-RS for BM for current beam, and then, the UE may measure a CSI-RS for BM, which is QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state. If QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state is a TRS, the UE may measure a CSI-RS, where QCL assumption for receiving the CSI-RS is the SSB providing QCL assumption for receiving the TRS. Alternatively or additionally, if QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state is a TRS, the UE may measure the SSB providing QCL assumption for receiving the TRS.

[0092] Regarding (iii) , using, as measurement RS (s) for the current beam, QCL RS(s) of the indicated TCI state and QCL RS (s) of QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state implies that the UE may perform joint measurement of the QCL RS (s) and QCL RS (s) of QCL RS (s) . For example, QCL RS (s) of the indicated TCI state is a CSI-RS for BM, and QCL RS (s) of the CSI-RS for BM is an SSB. The UE may perform joint measurement of the CSI-RS for BM and the SSB.

[0093] In some embodiments, if the total number of activated TCI state (s) is less than the value of M, for the third triggering event, the UE may (instead) report the activated TCI state with the M’ -th best measurement quality (M’ being the total number of activated TCI state (s) ) , or report the activated TCI state with the worst measurement quality. The UE may also refrain from performing the UEI-BR procedure corresponding to the third triggering event, or the UE may refrain from detecting the third triggering event. In some other embodiments, the NW entity may ensure that the total number of activated TCI state (s) is larger than or equal to the value of M. In some embodiments, the NW entity may refrain from configuring the UEI-BR if the total number of activated TCI state (s) is less than the value of M. Alternatively or additionally, the NW entity may refrain from configuring a value of M larger than the total number of activated TCI state (s) .

[0094] In some embodiments, the NW may configure the value of M per serving cell, per cell group or configured commonly for a set of serving cell (s) configured with simultaneous TCI activation / indication (e.g., serving cell (s) configured in simultaneousU-TCIUpdateList1, simultaneousU-TCI-UpdateList2, simultaneousU-TCI-UpdateList3 or simultaneousU-TCIUpdateList4) .

[0095] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures different value of M for at least two serving cells in a set of serving cells configured with simultaneous TCI activation / indication, the NW entity may ensure the total number of activated TCI states is larger than or equal to the maximal value of M among the set of serving cells.

[0096] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure the UE with more multiple triggering events causing the UE to generate and transmit UEI-BR for one serving cell. In some other embodiments, the NW entity may configure the UE with only one triggering event for a UEI-BR procedure for one serving cell.

[0097] In some embodiments, the UE may report the UE capabilities indicating the supported triggering event (s) specifying whether the UE supports to be configured with multiple triggering events in a serving cell or different serving cells within a band or band combination, and / or the supported combination (s) of one or more triggering event (s) .

[0098] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures, to the UE, more than one triggering event (s) for generating and transmitting a UEI-BR for one serving cell, the NW entity may further configure whether the UE is allowed to transmit / trigger multiple UEI-BR (s) corresponding to different triggering event at the same time.

[0099] In some embodiments, the NW entity may configure common or separate counter (s) and / or timer (s) for the multiple triggering events for UEI-BR. In some embodiments, if separate counters or timers are configured for multiple triggering events, and if the UE determines to trigger the UEI-BR for one triggering event, the UE may reset or stop the counter or timer for other triggering event (s) .

[0100] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures, to the UE, with more than one triggering event for performing / transmitting UEI-BR for one serving cell, and if the NW entity configures the UE so that to transmit only one UEI-BR corresponding to a triggering event among plural triggering events detected within a predetermined time interval, and if the UE has detected more than one triggering events for the serving cell then, the UE may transmit / trigger UEI-BR corresponding to the triggering event with highest event priority.

[0101] In some embodiments, the event priority may be determined based on an event identifier corresponding to or configured for one triggering event. In some other embodiments, the event priority may be explicitly configured by the NW entity. In yet some other embodiments, the event priority may be pre-defined. For example, the first triggering event has a higher priority than the second triggering event, and the second triggering event has a higher priority than the third triggering event.

[0102] Fig. 6 is a signal diagram 600 illustrating a joint UEI-BR transmission according to an embodiment. First, the UE 102 may (optionally as suggested by the dashed line) transmit 603 a UE capability (s) for supporting UEI-BR indicating (A) whether the UE supports the first mode, the second mode, or both the first and the  second mode, and a UE-supported UEI-BR triggering events. The NW entity (e.g., BS 104) configures the UE to detect more than one UEI-BR different triggering events by transmitting 604 an RRC carrying a UEI-BR configuration specifying: (i) measurement RS(s) for new / candidate beam (s) , (ii) the first and / or second mode of UEI-BR, and (iii) UEI-BR triggering events. When the UE 102 detects 610 multiple UEI-BR (different) triggering events at the same time (i.e., within a predetermined time interval) , the UE 102 aggregates 640 the multiple UEI-BRs corresponding to the detected UEI-BR triggering events in a joint report. The UE then transmits 650 the joint UEI-BR report. This may imply the multiple UEI-BR (s) are reported as one report instance transmitted on one UL resource. The payload size of the joint report may be (A) a fixed payload size or (B) a dynamic payload size.

[0103] In case of a fixed payload size, the payload size of the joint report may be associated with respective length of UEI-BR corresponding to a configured triggering event. For example, consider that the NW entity has configured to transmit upon detecting the first, the second or the third triggering event a UEI-BR of length of UEI-BR A1, A2, or A3, respectively. Then, the payload size of the joint report is the sum of A1+A2+A3 (optionally subtracted from duplicated information among configured triggering event (s) (e.g., index / measurement quality of the indicated TCI state) ) . In such example, the UE may not detect all the configured triggering events. Moreover, the bit positions or reporting order corresponding each detected triggering event in the joint report may be pre-configured or pre-defined. If some of configured triggering event (s) is not detected within the predetermined time interval, the UE may report padding bits in bit positions corresponding to undetected triggering event.

[0104] In case of a dynamic payload size, the payload size of the joint report may be determined based on the detected triggering event (s) and / or respective length of UEI-BR corresponding to detected triggering event (s) . For example, when the NW entity has configured the UE to detect the first, the second and the third triggering event yielding corresponding single triggering event UEI-BR of lengths A1, A2 and A3, respectively, if the UE detects the first and the second triggering events then, the payload size of the joint report is the sum of A1+A2 (optionally subtracted from duplicated information among configured triggering event (s) ) . In this case, the UE may  report the detected triggering event (s) (e.g., by reporting event ID) in the request signal or the notification signal. For example, the UE may report the detected triggering event (s) (e.g., by reporting event ID) in the CSI part one of the joint report. The bit positions or reporting order corresponding each configured triggering event in the joint report may be pre-configured or pre-defined.

[0105] Fig. 7 is a signal diagram 700 illustrating a priority based UEI-BR transmission according to another embodiment. The first steps 703 and 704 in this signal diagram are substantively the same as steps 603 and 604, respectively. As in step 610, the UE 102 then detects 710 multiple configured UEI-BR triggering events causing the UE to generate multiple UEI-BRs, respectively. If the different UL resources for transmitting the multiple UEI-BRs do not overlap (i.e., “NO” branch of 732 inquiry) then the UE 102 transmits the multiple UEI-BRs on the respective UL resources. If the different UL resources for transmitting the multiple UEI-BRs overlap (i.e., “YES” branch of 732 inquiry) then the UE 102 determines 735 priorities of the detected UEI-BR triggering event respectively according to a predetermined rule, and then generates 740 and transmits 750B the UEI-BR corresponding to the highest priority UEI-BR trigger event.

[0106] In some embodiments, if the NW entity configures, to the UE, that more than one UEI-BR corresponding to different triggering event (s) can be triggered / transmitted, and / or if the UE transmits / triggers multiple UEI-BR (s) corresponding to different triggering event at the same time, the UE may transmit the multiple UEI-BR (s) in separate report. This may imply the multiple UEI-BR (s) are reported as different report instance transmitted on different UL resource (s) .

[0107] In some embodiments, if different UL resource (s) carrying UEI-BR (s) corresponding to different triggering event (s) are overlapped fully or partially in time domain (e.g., overlapped with at least one OFDM symbol) and / or are transmitted on the same carrier or serving cell, the UE may determine CSI multiplexing order or which one(s) to drop based on one or more of an event priority of these triggering event (s) (as described above) , a serving cell index of serving cell, where the triggering event is detected, an identifier of the report configuration applied to trigger / configure the  triggering event and / or on which mode (e.g., the first mode or the second mode) is the UE configured to use for transmitting the UEI-BR for the triggering event.
