AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current communication systems lack the ability to differentiate between random access channel (RO) resources for initial access and paging response, leading to inefficient resource allocation and increased network energy consumption.

Method used

A solution is provided where a terminal device receives PRACH resource configuration and timer information from a network device, starts a RO validity timer upon paging indication, and selects a valid RO for PRACH transmission based on this configuration and timer, allowing differentiated use of ROs for paging response.

Benefits of technology

This approach optimizes network energy saving and reduces UE response delay by ensuring ROs are used efficiently for paging responses only when needed, freeing up resources for other transmissions.

[0043] Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to Fig. 1, which illustrates an example communication system 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The system 100 includes a network device 110. The network device 110 serves area 130 (also called as cell 130) . The system 100 also includes one or more terminal devices, such as terminal devices 120, and 121. The terminal devices 120, 121 are capable of connecting and communicating in an UL and DL with the network device 110. In communication systems, an UL refers to a link in a direction from a terminal device to a network device, and a DL refers to a link in a direction from the network device to the terminal device.

[0044] It is to be understood that the number of network device and terminal devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The system 100 may  include any suitable number of network device and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0045] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) and the fifth generation (5G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0046] Among others, an issue addressed by some embodiments of the present disclosure is how to handle random access (RA) to respond to paging to optimize network energy saving and UE response delay. The UE responds to paging by initiating a Random Access procedure either for RRC Connection setup / resume or to perform a Small Data Transmission in RRC Inactive. It is to be understood that the random access procedure may be a 4-step RACH or 2-step RACH. In order to reduce UE paging response delay, denser ROs may be provided. However, providing a large amount of ROs or more frequent ROs reduces the resources available for UL data transmissions because the resources reserved for ROs cannot be used for PUSCH / other purposes and they increase network energy consumption for the RO monitoring. Therefore, it is not desirable to provide such denser configuration to be used for mobile-originated initial access, whose occurrence is unknown to the network. Instead, the denser RO configuration use can be considered for paging response only since the resource availability can be conditioned to a UE being paged to ensure energy saving and resource efficiency. That is, if no paging is triggered by the network, these RO resources can be used for other UL transmissions.

[0047] However, currently, the same RO resources can be used for any purpose, including initial access and response to paging, i.e. no differentiation of ROs based on the purpose is supported. Furthermore, it is open how the UE would determine the validity of RO resources  to use for paging response upon paging indication.

[0048] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for determining RO validity. In an aspect of the solution, a terminal device receives, from a network device, a first PRACH resource configuration and timer information indicating a RO validity time; receives, from the network device, a paging indication; starts a RO validity timer for determining the RO validity time; based on determining that the terminal device is paged, selects a valid RO based on the first PRACH resource configuration and the RO validity timer; and performs a PRACH transmission using the selected RO. Furthermore, this solution may improve efficiency for RO allocation.

[0049] Reference is now made to Fig. 2, which shows a process 200 for supporting RO validity according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 120 and the network device 110 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

[0050] At 210, the network device 110 may transmit a first PRACH resource configuration and timer information indicating a RO validity time to the terminal device 120. Accordingly, the terminal device 120 may receive the PRACH resource and the timer information from the network device 110.

[0051] In some embodiments, the PRACH resource configuration may be transmitted in system information, e.g. SIB1. In some embodiments, the PRACH resource configuration may be transmitted in a radio resource control (RRC) message. In some embodiments, the PRACH resource configuration may be transmitted in a message dedicated to the terminal device.

[0052] In some embodiments, the PRACH resource configuration may be dedicated for paging response. In other words, the PRACH resource configuration may not be available, for example, to a terminal device having mobile-originated traffic. In some embodiments, paging response may comprise initiating a Random Access procedure either for RRC Connection setup / resume or to perform a Small Data Transmission in RRC Inactive.

[0053] At 220, the network device 110 may transmit a paging indication to the terminal device 120. Accordingly, the terminal device 120 may receive the paging indication from the network device 110. In some embodiments, the paging indication comprises a paging record, a paging message, a paging DCI, a PEI, a WUS, a LP-WUS, or any combination of them.

[0054] At 230, the terminal device 120 may start a RO validity timer (e.g. T3xx) for determining the RO validity time. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 starts the RO validity timer at a reference time associated with paging or based on the timer information.

[0055] In some embodiments, the reference time may be associated with a reception of a paging early indication (PEI) , the paging indication, a paging downlink control information (DCI) (a short message) , a paging frame (PF) time point, a paging occasion (PO) time point, or any combination thereof. In some embodiments, the PF time point or the PO time point may be based on 3GPP specification 38.304. In some embodiments, the reference time may be beginning of a slot, beginning of a System Frame, or a first symbol of a slot in which the paging indication is received. In some embodiments, the reference time is indicated by system information or the timer information. In some embodiments, the reference time is predefined.

[0056] In an embodiment, the timer information comprises information for determining at least one parameter for the RO validity timer to determine the RO validity time. In an embodiment, the timer information comprises the reference time. In an embodiment, the timer information comprises a duration counted by the RO validity timer. In an embodiment, the timer information comprises both the reference time and the duration. In an embodiment where the timer information comprises multiple values, the timer information comprises at least one parameter for each of the multiple values.

[0057] Fig. 3 illustrates an example 300 of ROs according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 3, a RO validity timer may start at a reference point, which may be also referred to as reference time. In some embodiments, the reference time may be PEI, PF, PO, paging massage reception. The RO validity timer may count a validity period of the ROs associated with the received paging indication. The ROs 310, 312, 314 and 316 may be valid, as they are in a time period during which the RO validity timer is running. The ROs 320, 322 and 324 may be invalid resources, as the RO validity timer has expired. The UE may be configured not to use the invalid resources for responding to the paging.

[0058] It is to be understood that in this example, the RO validity timer defines the resource from a time perspective, the resource may also be defined in frequency and / or preamble perspective. In one example, the RO validity timer defines that a set of frequency resources (for example in terms of physical resource blocks or subcarriers) are available per RO 310, 312, 314 and 316, while the same set of frequency resources are not available in ROs 320,  322 and 324.

[0059] In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 stops the RO validity timer based on determining that the terminal device is not paged. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 starts the RO validity timer upon determining that the terminal device 120 is paged.

[0060] At 240, based on determining that the terminal device 120 is paged, the terminal device 120 may select a valid RO based on the first PRACH resource configuration and the RO validity timer. In some embodiments, at least one RO of the first PRACH resource configuration is valid when the RO validity timer is running. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 is paged when a paging is addressing the terminal device. It means that the terminal device 120 may find its I-RNTI or S-TMSI in the paging record (which is scheduled by a paging DCI in the PO) .

[0061] At 250, the network device 110 may monitor for at least one valid RO configured by the first PRACH resource configuration and based on the RO validity time. At 260, the terminal device 120 may perform a PRACH transmission using the selected RO that has been determined to be valid. In some embodiments, the timer information comprises multiple values of the RO validity time. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 receives, from the network device 110, paging information comprising an indication of a value of the multiple values of the RO validity time for the terminal device 120 to use. In some embodiments, the paging information may be PEI, paging message, short message (paging DCI) , WUS, or LP-WUS.

[0062] In some embodiments, the multiple values of the RO validity time comprise a default value, and the terminal device 120 uses the default value based on determining that no further indication of a value to be used is received. For example, the further indication may be received as part of the PEI, paging DCI (short message) or the paging message / record. For example, the default value may be broadcasted in one time instant and thus serve as a fallback option for the terminal device 120 in case it receives no further timer information (RO validity time) that would overrule the default value. In this way, it may enable more flexibility to the network device to optimize the multiple values of the RO validity timer. As another example, the first PRACH configuration may include at least two timer values, and the paging indication may indicate, e.g. via a flag or a bit (s) , which one of the timer values shall be used for the RO validity timer. One of the at least two timer values may be the default value that  shall be used in the absence of the further indication. In some embodiments, the multiple values are based on a number of POs or PFs that are clustered together, a PF interval, or both of them.

[0063] In some embodiments, how to set the RO validity timer value (s) is up to network implementation. However, the RO validity timer should be set by the network device 110 taking into account that the terminal device 120 would try to use the first available (valid) RO it is able to use, but it may not be able to select the first (N) ROs to respond to paging for various reasons. For example, this can be due to overheating preventing UL transmissions, or to concurrent multi-SIM operations. Also, the initial (or a subsequent) PRACH transmission may fail, and the terminal device 120 may have to repeat a second (further) PRACH transmission. Therefore, the terminal device 120 would benefit from a larger timer value, which allows to have at least a certain minimum number of potential (valid) ROs to be used. On the other hand, a too large value can lead to larger energy and resource inefficiency by the network device 110. This means that the network device 110 would set the value considering a compromise / tradeoff between the different requirements.

[0064] In some embodiments, R19 paging enhancement is used, the RA / PRACH load level to respond to paging will inherently increase during / after each ‘clustered’ paging window, in which the paging occasions / frames are grouped closely in time. This is because the terminal device 120 will have to be paged during the same paging window, thereby causing the terminal device 120 to respond to the paging by transmitting a PRACH preamble within a short interval. Therefore, the RO validity timer value set by the network device 110 may be larger than the value to apply if paging is applied or if the PRACH load is lower. The value can depend on the amount of POs / PFs that are clustered together.

[0065] In some embodiments, one approach to R19 paging enhancement is to increase the paging frame interval and potentially also increase the number of POs per paging frame. In some embodiments, the paging frame interval means time between two paging frames, e.g. from the start of one paging frame to the start of the subsequent paging frame. The paging frame interval may also be referred to as paging frame cycle or paging frame periodicity. This will cluster the terminal devices 120 to be paged and thus the applicability of the additional RO resources and the RO validity timer can also be based on the configured paging frame interval (e.g. if the interval exceeds a limit 160 ms  / 320 ms  / …) .

[0066] The process 200 may enable UEs efficiently handle preamble transmissions / RA  attempts relative to paging response, with or without clustered POs / PFs. The process 200 may also enable efficient dynamic UL resource handling so that PRACH capacity is only temporarily increased for the period when the RACH load increases upon paging, without reserving them all the time.

[0067] In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 receives, from the network device 110, paging information comprising an indication indicating that a RO validity timer should not be started for a paging instance. This enables the network device 110 to dedicate more uplink resources to other purposes in case the paging load is low or other traffic load is high.

[0068] In some embodiments, the first PRACH resource configuration indicates at least one first RO for paging response, and the terminal device 120 receives, from the network device, a second PRACH resource configuration indicating at least one second RO for mobile-originated based initial access, a third PRACH resource configuration indicating at least one third RO for physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) order, or both of the second PRACH resource configuration and the third PRACH resource configuration. In some embodiments, the at least one second RO and the at least one third RO may be denoted as at least one normal RO (for example, legacy RO) , and the first RO may be denoted as additional RO, e.g. for 5G system. In some embodiments, a normal or legacy RO may be used for any purpose including responding to paging, performing RACH for mobile-originated initial access, and responding to a PDCCH order. In some embodiments, the at least one second RO is for mobile-originated based initial access or PDCCH order.

[0069] In some embodiments, the first PRACH resource configuration comprises a first property of at least one first RO for paging response, a second property of at least one second RO for mobile-originated based initial access, a third property of at least one third RO for PDCCH order, or any combination of these properties.

[0070] In some embodiments where the first PRACH resource configuration indicates multiple first ROs, the second PRACH resource configuration indicates multiple second ROs, or the third PRACH resource configuration indicates multiple third ROs, a periodicity of the first ROs of the first PRACH resource configuration is shorter than a periodicity of the second ROs of the second PRACH resource configuration or a periodicity of the third ROs of the third PRACH resource configuration. In other words, the first ROs is denser than the second ROs or the third ROs.

[0071] In some embodiments, the validity of the at least one first RO is based on the RO  validity timer.

[0072] Fig. 4 illustrates an example 400 of ROs according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 4, first ROs 410, 412, 414, 416, 418, 420, 424, 426, 428 and 430 may be ROs for responding to paging, second ROs 440 and 442 are ROs for mobile-originated traffic, PDCCH order, etc. A periodicity x of the first ROs is shorter than a periodicity y of the second ROs. The first ROs 416, 418, 420 and 422 within a RO validity timer are valid resources for responding to paging.

[0073] In some embodiments, the at least one first RO is on R19 PRACH resources, and the at least one first RO is dedicated for a R19 terminal device. In some embodiments, based on determining that the PRACH transmission fails (e.g. the terminal device has not received a response to the preamble transmission or the terminal device has determined a contention resolution failure) and the RO validity timer has expired, the terminal device 120 performs the PRACH transmission using the at least one second RO of the second PRACH resource configuration or using the at least one third RO of the third PRACH resource configuration.

[0074] In some embodiments, based on determining that the PRACH transmission fails and the RO validity timer has not expired, the terminal device 120 performs the PRACH transmission using another one of the at least one first RO which is valid. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 receives, from the network device 110, a backoff indication; and reset or extend the RO validity timer based on the backoff indication. The backoff indication is received in response to transmitting a PRACH in a RO of the first PRACH resource configuration. In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 may receive an indication of an extension value for extending the RO validity timer. In some embodiments, the indication is carried by the timer information.

[0075] Fig. 5 illustrates an example 500 of ROs according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 5, a RO validity timer may start at a reference point (reference time) . In some embodiments, the reference time may be PEI, PF, PO, paging massage reception. The ROs 510, 512, 514 and 516 may be valid, as they are in a time period during which the RO validity timer is running. The UE (the terminal device 120) may receive a backoff indicator, and the RO validity timer may be reset. The ROs 520, 522 and 524 may be valid because of the reset of the RO validity timer.

[0076] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 600 may involve a UE 610 (an example  of the terminal device 120 as illustrated in Fig. 1) and a cell 620 (an example of the network device 110 as illustrated in Fig. 1) .

[0077] At 630, the terminal device 120 is in RRC idle  / inactive  / connected mode. At 640, the network device 110 transmits system information including PRACH configuration for paging response including a RO validity timer to the terminal device 120. At 650, the network device 110 transmits Paging information to the terminal device 120. For example, the paging information may be a PEI.

[0078] At 660, the terminal device 120 receives a paging indication, and starts the RO validity timer. For example, the paging indication may be DCI and paging record or message. It is to be understood that the paging information may indicate information associated with paging, while the paging indication may trigger the paging. At 670, the terminal device 120 triggers a RACH procedure to respond to paging and select a valid RO based on the RO validity timer.

[0079] At 680, the terminal device 120 performs a PRACH transmission on the selected RO. At 680, the terminal device 120 and the network device 110 continue RACH procedure as in legacy that is the network device transmits a message 2 (Random Access Response) to the terminal devices.

[0080] In view of some embodiments of the present disclosure, there are some proposed changes to the related specification as follows.

[0081] PRACH Adaptation in time domain in conjunction with adaptation of paging occasions: The PRACH load level will inherently increase if the paging occasions are confined in time domain. This is because the UEs will have to be paged during such confined time period, thereby causing the UEs to respond to the paging also in a confined time interval. So it should be possible to increase amount of PRACH resources in order to accommodate more clustered paging responses from UEs.

[0082] Proposal: PRACH adaptation in time domain is supported to temporarily increase the PRACH capacity to be aligned with clustered paging and spread the PRACH load when paging occasion adaptation is used.
