Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR COMMUNICATIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The non-limiting and exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the technical field of communications, and specifically to methods and apparatuses for communication.BACKGROUND

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] In communication networks such as fifth generation system (5GS) as defined by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , it may support various terminal devices such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The terminal devices may be expected to be able to communicate with the network (such as 5GS) directly or indirectly. For example, the IoT devices may comprise zero-energy (ZE) IoT (ZE-IoT) devices, Passive-IoT device, Ambient power-enabled IoT, or Ambient IoT (AIoT or A-IoT or AIOT) devices, etc. For example, Ambient IoT may support many different use cases such as inventory taking, sensor data collection, asset tracking, actuator control, etc.SUMMARY

[0004] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0005] There may be various connectivity topologies for Ambient IoT networks and devices as defined in 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. In the topologies, the Ambient IoT device may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional.

[0006] Base station (BS) , user equipment (UE) , assisting node, or intermediate node could be multiple BSs or UEs, respectively. The mixture of indoor and outdoor placement of such nodes is regarded as a network implementation choice. Account would need to be taken of potential impact on device or node complexity. In the connectivity topologies, this may not imply the existence of multi-hop assisting or intermediate nodes.

[0007] 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0 describes five connectivity topologies defined for Ambient IoT networks and devices.

[0008] In these topologies, the Ambient IoT device may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional.

[0009] Among them, Deployment scenario 1 with Topology 1 and Deployment scenario 2 with Topology 2 may be considered in 3GPP Release 19 random access network (RAN) Ambient IoT study item (SI) .

[0010] FIG. 1a illustrates an example of Topology 1, which may be same as Figure 4.2.1.1-1 of 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0.

[0011] Topology 1: BS Ambient IoT device.

[0012] In Topology 1, the Ambient IoT device may directly and bidirectionally communicate with a base station. The communication between the base station and the ambient IoT device may include Ambient IoT data and / or signaling. This topology may include the possibility that the BS transmitting to the Ambient IoT device is a different from the BS receiving from the Ambient IoT device.

[0013] FIG. 1b illustrates an example of Topology 2, which may be same as Figure 4.2.1.2-1 of 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0.

[0014] Topology 2: BS intermediate node (also called UE reader herein)  Ambient IoT device.

[0015] In Topology 2, the Ambient IoT device may communicate bidirectionally with an intermediate node between the device and base station. In this topology, the intermediate node can be a relay, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, UE, repeater, etc. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer Ambient IoT data and / or signaling between BS and the Ambient IoT device.

[0016] For Topology 2, 3GPP RAN2 just agreed in 3GPP RAN2#127 to study cases for UE reader “temporary” out of connection (e.g. Radio link failure (RLF) , handover (HO) ) and may consider extendibility to future “temporary” out of coverage case with full network (NW) control of resources (if possible) .

[0017] In principle, regardless of temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage that the UE reader is experiencing, the fact is that the UE reader’s Uu connection (the radio interface between a radio access network node and a UE) is not stable so that the UE reader is risky of losing its connection to the radio access network node. In this case, the UE reader’s allocated dedicated resources for A-IoT data transmissions and receptions in Uu interface and A-IoT interface are not available following the legacy rules. This is because usage of these dedicated resources may create interference to other UEs which are of decent connections to the radio access network node, thus there may be interruption in on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions / services / procedures (if there is any) performed via the UE reader. To support UE reader performing A-IoT communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage, at least one of the below issues may be expected to be addressed: 1) Under which conditions should the UE reader continue communication with AIoT devices when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage, 2) How for the UE reader to suspend the A-IoT communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage? 3) How to allocate resources for A-IoT communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage (if allowed) ? 4) How to reduce the collision with the Uu / A-IoT communication performed by other UE (s) having connection to the NW? 5) What are the procedures for the core network (CN) node to handle on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions / services / procedures due to the interruption?

[0018] To overcome or mitigate at least one of above mentioned problems or other problems, the embodiments of the present disclosure propose an improved solution for communication.

[0019] In a first aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a method performed by a first terminal device. The method may comprise, if the first terminal device is in temporary out of connection to a network node or temporary out of coverage, performing one of:

[0062] The term “network device” or “network node” or “network function” refers to any suitable function which can be implemented in a network entity (physical or virtual) of a communication network. For example, the network function can be implemented either as a network element on a dedicated hardware, as a software instance running on a dedicated hardware, or as a virtualized function instantiated on an appropriate platform, e.g. on a cloud infrastructure. For example, the 5G system (5GS) may comprise a plurality of NFs such as Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Charging Function (CHF) , Session Management Function (SMF) , Authentication Service Function (AUSF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Policy Control Function (PCF) , Application Function (AF) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , User plane Function (UPF) and Network Repository Function (NRF) , radio access network (RAN) , service communication proxy (SCP) , network data analytics function (NWDAF) , network slice Selection Function (NSSF) , network slice-Specific Authentication and Authorization Function (NSSAAF) , an Ambient Internet of Things Function (AIOTF) , Unified Data Repository (UDR) , etc. In other embodiments, the network function may comprise different types of NFs for example depending on a specific network. For example, the 4G system (such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) ) may include Mobile Management Entity (MME) , home subscriber server (HSS) , PCRF (Policy and Charging Rules Function) , PGW (Packet Data Network Gateway) , PGW control plane (PGW-C) , PGW user plane (PGW-U) Serving gateway (SGW) , application server (AS) , SGW control plane (SGW-C) , SGW user plane (SGW-U) , E-UTRAN Node B (eNB) , etc. In other embodiments, the network function may comprise different types of NFs for example depending on a specific network.

[0063] The network device may be an access network device with accessing function in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses to the network and receives services therefrom. The access network device may include a base station (BS) , an access point (AP) , a multi-cell / multicast coordination entity (MCE) , a controller or any other suitable device in a wireless communication network. The BS may be, for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a next generation NodeB (gNodeB or gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, Wireless Access Backhaul (WAB) node, and so forth.

[0064] Yet further examples of the access network device comprise multi-standard radio (MSR) radio equipment such as MSR BSs, network controllers such as radio network controllers (RNCs) or base station controllers (BSCs) , base transceiver stations (BTSs) , transmission points, transmission nodes, positioning nodes and / or the like. More generally, however, the network node may represent any suitable device (or group of devices) capable, configured, arranged, and / or operable to enable and / or provide a terminal device access to a wireless communication network or to provide some service to a terminal device that has accessed to the wireless communication network.

[0065] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that can access a communication network and receive services therefrom. By way of example and not limitation, the terminal device refers to a mobile terminal, user equipment (UE) , or other suitable devices. The UE may be, for example, a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , zero-energy (ZE) IoT (ZE-IoT) devices, Passive-IoT device, Ambient power-enabled IoT, or Ambient IoT devices, or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a portable computer, an image capture terminal device such as a digital camera, a gaming terminal device, a music storage and a playback appliance, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, a voice over IP (VoIP) phone, a wireless local loop phone, a tablet, a wearable device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a portable computer, a desktop computer, a wearable terminal device, a vehicle-mounted wireless terminal device, a wireless endpoint, a mobile station, a laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , a laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , a USB dongle, a smart device, a wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably. As one example, a terminal device may represent a UE configured for communication in accordance with one or more communication standards promulgated by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) , such as 3GPP LTE standard or NR standard. As used herein, a “user equipment” or “UE” may not necessarily have a “user” in the sense of a human user who owns and / or operates the relevant device. In some embodiments, a terminal device may be configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a terminal device may be designed to transmit information to a network on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the communication network. Instead, a UE may represent a device that is intended for sale to, or operation by, a human user but that may not initially be associated with a specific human user.

[0066] As yet another example, in an IoT scenario, a terminal device may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another terminal device and / or network equipment. The terminal device may in this case be a machine-to-machine (M2M) device, which may in a 3GPP context be referred to as a machine-type communication (MTC) device. As one particular example, the terminal device may be a UE implementing the 3GPP narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) standard. Particular examples of such machines or devices are sensors, metering devices such as power meters, industrial machinery, or home or personal appliances, for example refrigerators, televisions, personal wearables such as watches etc. In other scenarios, a terminal device may represent a vehicle or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0067] References in the specification to “one embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0068] It shall be understood that although the terms “first” and “second” etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed terms.

[0069] As used herein unless expressly stated to the contrary, the phrase “at least one of A and B” or “at least one of A or B” should be understood to mean any of the following “only A, only B, or both A and B. ” The phrase “A and / or B” should be understood to mean any of the following “only A, only B, or both A and B” .

[0070] As used herein unless expressly stated to the contrary, the phrase “a plurality of” followed by a conjunctive list of enumerated items (e.g., “A and B” , “A, B, and C” ) is intended to mean “multiple items, with each item selected from the list consisting of” the enumerated items. For example, “a plurality of A and B” is intended to mean any of the following: more than one A; more than one B; or at least one A and at least one B.

[0071] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0072] It is noted that these terms as used in this document are used only for ease of description and differentiation among nodes, devices or networks etc. With the development of the technology, other terms with the similar / same meanings may also be used.

[0073] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0074] Zero-Energy IoT &Ambient-IoT

[0075] Wireless IoT devices may be often battery powered and both the need to change battery and the battery lifetime may be concerns for many potential applications such as asset tracking or environmental / industrial sensors. For this reason, the wireless communications industry has been interested in so-called zero-energy (ZE) devices. ZE devices refer to wireless IoT devices that do not require battery replacement, and often harvest energy from the environment. In some use cases, such as monitoring the temperature of foodstuffs, the ZE devices may have small batteries that are disposable (e.g., organic, compostable batteries) , rechargeable or have very limited capacity.

[0076] These ZE-IoT devices can in addition be of very small form factor and could even be printable and they target ultra-low power consumption to enable operation based on either energy-harvesting from an ambient sources or back-scattering communication (cf. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) ) . That is, instead of relying on energy for communication being provided by a battery it is instead harvested from an ambient source, such as vibrations, solar power, RF, etc. (harvesting) , or a charge carrier wave is provided to the device which is modulated and reflected back to a reader (in the back-scattering communication case) . This enables energy autonomous operation during the lifetime of the devices without need for either manual replacement or charging of the batteries. Compared to existing radio access technologies this puts new requirements on the radio interface and the protocols.

[0077] Recently work on this has started in 3GPP, and then referred to as ‘Ambient-IoT’ . 3GPP TR 22.840 V19.0.0, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety, is being developed by SA1 to capture potential use cases, traffic scenarios, device constraints of Ambient IoT (A-IoT) and identify new potential service requirements as well as new KPIs.

[0078] Meanwhile, a study item at 3GPP TSG RAN#97e, Electronic Meeting, RP-222685, ‘Study on Ambient IoT’ has been carried out with a focus on the feasibility of meeting design targets for relevant use cases of Ambient IoT. The outcome is reported in 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. The work is being continued with a RAN1-led study item in 3GPP TSG RAN Meeting #102, RP-234058, ‘New SID: Study on solutions for Ambient IoT (Internet of Things) in NR’ , the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.

[0079] FIG. 1c shows an example of backscattering communication.

[0080] In backscattering communication, passive devices may communicate by modulating and reflecting an incoming carrier wave. That is, a carrier wave transmitted by a carrier wave transmitter (CWT) may be modulated and reflected by the passive device ( ‘Tag’ in the FIG. 1c) , and the modulated signal may be then read by a Reader. In this way the CWT may provide the energy to the passive device (CWT-Tag) to enable it to send uplink data to the reader (Tag-Reader) .

[0081] The most well-known example of backscattering communication today is RFID. The 3-node setup illustrated in FIG. 1c may be referred to as the ‘bistatic’ backscattering communication, whereas the 2-node case where CWT and reader are located in the same node may be referred to as ‘monostatic’ backscattering communication.

[0082] Although the subject matter described herein may be implemented for any appropriate topologies e.g. as defined in 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0, the embodiments disclosed herein are described in relation to topology 2 as defined in 3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0.

[0083] Although the subject matter described herein may be implemented in any appropriate type of system using any suitable components, the embodiments disclosed herein are described in relation to a communication system complied with the exemplary system architecture illustrated in FIG. 2a. For simplicity, the system architecture of FIG. 2a only depicts some exemplary elements. In practice, a communication system may further include any additional elements suitable to support communication between terminal devices or between a wireless device and another communication device, such as a landline telephone, a service provider, or any other network node or terminal device. The communication system may provide communication and various types of services to one or more terminal devices to facilitate the terminal devices’ access to and / or use of the services provided by, or via, the communication system.

[0084] FIG. 2a illustrates system architecture of supporting AIoT devices using AIOTF for Topology 2, which may be similar to Figure 6.30.1.1-1 of 3GPP TR 23.700-13 V1.0.0, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. The functional entities such as AUSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AMF, AIOTF, AIoT device, UE, NG-RAN, CHF, AF / AS, SMF, UPF, etc. and the reference points such as Nausf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Namf, Nchf, Naf, Naiotf, Nsmf, etc. are defined in 3GPP TS 23.501 V19.0.0 and 3GPP TR 23.700-13 V1.0.0, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0085] The message names in the procedures / methods of the embodiments are descriptive. It is assumed that the names may be updated e.g. with corresponding Service Based Interface (SBI) based names where applicable during the normative phase.

[0086] In below embodiments, the proposed solution and the corresponding procedures and configurations are applicable to any ultra-low power devices, zero-energy or Ambient IoT devices. However, the proposed solution should not be limited to such devices, and can be extended to other service / device classes or categories, e.g., related to Enhanced Mobile Broadband (MBB) , massive-MTC, Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) , Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) , etc.

[0087] The term RAN node is used which can be a network node or a user equipment (UE) . Examples of network nodes may comprise NodeB, base station (BS) , multi-standard radio (MSR) radio node (such as MSR BS) , eNodeB, gNodeB, master eNB (MeNB) , secondary eNB (SeNB) , location measurement unit (LMU) , integrated access backhaul (IAB) node, network controller, radio network controller (RNC) , base station controller (BCS) , relay, IAB, repeater, donor node controlling relay, base transceiver station (BTS) , Central Unit (e.g. in a gNB) , Distributed Unit (e.g. in a gNB) , Baseband Unit, Centralized Baseband, cloud RAN (C-RAN) , access point (AP) , transmission points, transmission nodes, transmission reception point (TRP) , RRU, RRH, nodes in distributed antenna system (DAS) , core network node (e.g. MME etc. ) , O&M, OSS, SON, positioning node (e.g. E-SMLC) , etc. In particular, in Ambient IoT scenario the RAN nodes may comprise intermediate node / UE (e.g., relay UE, IAB, repeater etc. ) and assisting node / UE (e.g., relay UE, IAB, repeater etc. ) in addition to the gNB which operates as a reader.

[0088] The Uu interface in 3GPP's New Radio (NR) may refer to the air interface between the User Equipment (UE) , such as a mobile device, and the gNB (Next-Generation NodeB) .

[0089] The term ‘polling’ , “poll’ and ‘paging’ , ‘page’ , ‘inventory’ , ‘query’ , ‘interrogate’ may be used to represent one or more than one signal transmitted by a network node broadcast wise or specially to a dedicated device. The purpose of the signal may be to facilitate / serve / manage / command one or more than one UE to synchronize to the network node (downlink (DL)  / uplink (UL) synchronize to a reference time / frame / symbol, or synchronize to one or more than one signal which the device receives from the network node, or synchronize based on a pre-defined rule) , receive DL data, response and transmit UL data correctly in intended resources. The content of such signal may be a particular reference signal or a signal carrying control information and / or data. Such signal may be transmitted periodically or a periodically configured by the network node.

[0090] The terms “Tag” , “device” or “A-IoT device” may be interchangeably applicable without losing the meaning. The terms ‘intermediate node’ , ‘intermediate UE’ or ‘UE’ may be applied interchangeably without losing the meaning.

[0091] The terms reader may stand for a node which may send a reader to device (R2D) transmission to devices. After that, the devices may report their identifiers (IDs) and / or perform device to reader (D2R) transmissions in UL towards the reader. It may also be possible that the reader may receive a device’s ID and / or UL transmissions, without sending a R2D transmission to the device first. The reader may be a RAN node (e.g., in topology 1) or a UE (in topology 2) , e.g., an intermediate / relay UE which relays / forwards data / transmission between a RAN node and devices. The R2D transmission may be “polling” , “ (A-IoT) paging” , ‘initial triggering command” , “inventory” , “command” , “access” , etc.

[0092] The term “A-IoT data” or “A-IoT traffic” may stand for data and / or signaling generated by A-IoT device or generated by a network entity or server towards A-IoT device. Meanwhile, the term “local data” , “local traffic” , “Uu traffic” or “Uu data” may stand for data and / or signaling generated by UE reader its own or generated by a network entity or server towards UE reader.

[0093] The term “temporary out of connection” in general may mean the connection to a serving cell becomes unstable or UE loses / releases radio resource control (RRC) connection to the serving cell but still stays in RRC connected. More specifically, it may include at least one of the following cases / events: 1) The UE detects physical layer problems and the RLF timer (e.g., T310 as defined in various 3GPP specifications such as 3GPP TS 38.331 V18.3.0) is still running. In this case, the number of out of sync instances has reached a configured number (e.g., N310 as defined in various 3GPP specifications such as 3GPP TS 38.331 V18.3.0) ; 2) The UE is performing (conditional) HO and the HO timer (e.g., T304 as defined in various 3GPP specifications such as 3GPP TS 38.331 V18.3.0) is still running; or 3) The UE is performing RRC reestablishment and the reestablishment timer (e.g., T301 or T311 as defined in various 3GPP specifications such as 3GPP TS 38.331 V18.3.0) is still running.

[0094] The above events may be also referred to as “out of connection event” . The timers (e.g., T310, T311, T301, or T304) may be referred to as “out of connection timer” .

[0095] It is worth noting that, after timer T304 is expired, RRC reestablishment is triggered. In this case, the UE may experience multiple “out of connection” events.

[0096] Similarly, the same (similar) embodiments herein may be also applicable to the case “temporary out of coverage” .

[0097] FIG. 2b illustrates an example of a full procedure on how an intermediate UE (e.g. UE reader) transits between different states.

[0098] The UE in RRC_IDLE may move to RRC_CONNECTED after RRC connection establishment. When out of connection event is triggered, The UE in RRC_CONNECTED may move to RRC_CONNECTED / out of connection. In an example, as soon as the timer (s) (as described in the above) is / are expired, while the UE, which is in (temporary) out of connection, cannot resume / restore its connection, the UE may move to RRC_IDLE. The UE may perform cell reselection procedure to find a suitable cell to camp on. If the UE cannot find any suitable cell to camp on (e.g., after a given time period) , the UE may consider itself as “out of coverage” . The UE (in RRC_IDLE) may be also referred to as “temporary out of coverage” when the time it stays in “out of coverage” is smaller than a (pre) defined time. Note that in other embodiments, “temporary out of connection” and “temporary out of coverage” may be defined differently and the present disclosure has no limit on it.

[0099] The embodiments may focus on mechanisms on how to mitigate the interruption in terminal device communication (e.g. A-IoT communication) via another terminal device (e.g. UE reader, intermediate / relay UE) caused due to that the UE is “temporary out of connection “or “temporary out of coverage” , while before the UE moves to / considers itself as “out of coverage” . The embodiments are not limited by any above example or any above term.

[0100] In an embodiment, a RAN node may comprise a gNB, distributed unit (DU) , central unit (CU) , etc. A CN node may comprise e.g., AMF, SMF, UPF, or any other CN node (e.g., AIOTF or AIoT NF) which may be responsible or be involved for A-IoT service / data handling. The application server, which is responsible or be involved for A-IoT service / data handling, may be also considered as a CN node.

[0101] FIGs. 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e and 3f show flowcharts of methods according to embodiments of the present disclosure, which may be performed by an apparatus implemented in or at or as a first terminal device or communicatively coupled to the first terminal device. As such, the apparatus may provide means or modules or circuits for accomplishing various parts of the methods as well as means or modules or circuits for accomplishing other processes in conjunction with other components. For some parts which have been described in an embodiment, the description thereof is omitted in other embodiment for brevity.

[0194] At block 536, optionally, if the first terminal device resumes its RRC connection in the network node, the network node may send, to the first terminal device, a message informing the first terminal device whether to perform the at least one session or transaction or service or procedure and / or for how long time the first terminal device can continue to perform the at least one session or transaction or service or procedure.

[0195] The network node may generate the message in various ways e.g. based on a local policy, or a configuration, a local decision, or a status of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, a network status, a type of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, the number of terminal devices served by the network node, information received from another network node or the first terminal device, etc.

[0196] FIG. 5e shows a flowchart of a method 540 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0197] At block 542, optionally, if the first terminal device resumes its RRC connection in the network node, the network node may receive, from the first terminal device, a message informing at least one of: whether the first terminal device has at least one session or transaction or service or procedure being performed or suspended, for how long time the first terminal device can continue to perform the at least one session or transaction or service or procedure being performed or suspended, at least one transaction identifier related to the at least one session or transaction or service or procedure being performed or suspended. Based on the message, the network node may determine whether / for how long time the first terminal device can continue to perform the at least one session or transaction or service or procedure and / or how to schedule communication performed by at least one other terminal device served by the network node.

[0198] At block 544, optionally, the network node may send, to the first terminal device, a message indicating whether information received from the second terminal device and / or a result stemming from the information received from the second terminal device has to be provided to the network node or has to be discarded or whether an operation with the second terminal device needs to be repeated.

[0199] The network node may generate the message in various ways e.g. based on a local policy, or a configuration, a local decision, or a status of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, a network status, a type of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, the number of terminal devices served by the network node, information received from another network node or the first terminal device, etc.

[0200] At block 546, optionally, when the network node is an access network node, the network node may send, to a core network node, a message indicating at least one of: the connection between the first terminal device and the access network node is expected to be lost, at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the first terminal device cannot be completed, a failure cause, or information or result collected from the second terminal device.

[0201] The access network node may generate the message in various ways e.g. based on a local policy, or a configuration, a local decision, or a status of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, a network status, a type of the at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, the number of terminal devices served by the network node, information received from another network node or the first terminal device, etc.

[0202] For example, the access network node may maintain a timer. The timer may be started when e.g., the access network node triggers the first terminal device to perform a session or transaction or service or procedure. When the timer is expired, the access network node may determine at least one of: the connection between the first terminal device and the access network node is expected to be lost, at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the first terminal device cannot be completed, a failure cause, or information or result collected from the second terminal device.

[0203] FIG. 5f shows a flowchart of a method 550 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0204] At block 552, optionally, when the network node is a core network node, the network node may receive, from an access network node, a message indicating at least one of: the connection between the first terminal device and the access network node is expected to be lost, at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the first terminal device cannot be completed, a failure cause, or information or result collected from the second terminal device. After receiving the message, the core network node may perform any suitable operation.

[0205] At block 554, optionally, when the network node is a core network node, the network node may determine a connection between the first terminal device and an access network node is expected to be lost, or at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the first terminal device cannot be completed.

[0206] For example, the core network node may maintain a timer. The timer may be started when e.g., the core network node sends a service request to the first terminal device to perform a session or transaction or service or procedure. When the timer is expired, the core network node may determine at least one of: a connection between the first terminal device and an access network node is expected to be lost, or at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the first terminal device cannot be completed.

[0207] At block 556, optionally, if the first terminal device is in the temporary out of connection or the temporary out of coverage and has at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure, the network node may suspend triggering a new session or transaction or service or procedure and / or scheduling a communication between an access network node and the first terminal device.

[0208] At block 558, optionally, the network node may receive, from the first terminal device, a first message indicating at least one ongoing session or transaction or service or procedure associated with the second terminal device is terminated without waiting for a connection to be restored. The first message may further indicate at least one of information that the first terminal device has received from the second terminal device but has not sent to the network node, a result stemming from the information received from the second terminal device, or a termination cause. After receiving the message, the network node may perform any suitable operation e.g. according to various embodiments.

[0209] In an embodiment, it proposes mechanisms to control the conditions under which a UE reader performing A-IoT communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage, and how the A-IoT procedure shall be performed if allowed, e.g., for how long the A-IoT procedure can be performed, what resource to use, how such resource is allocated, etc.

[0210] In an embodiment, it proposes mechanisms for the network node to reduce collision between A-IoT communication performed by UE reader temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage and Uu / A-IoT communication performed by other UE (s) having connection to the network node.

[0211] In an embodiment, the network node (e.g., gNB or RAN node or core network node) may determine and inform whether an intermediate UE can continue to perform new or an already initiated A-IoT procedure / service / communication / session when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0212] In an embodiment, it proposes the conditions under which the intermediate UE shall suspend or stop the ongoing A-IoT procedure when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0213] In an embodiment, the network node may provide common or dedicated A-IoT resource for A-IoT communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage. The intermediate UE may further signal these resources to the A-IoT devices.

[0214] In an embodiment, it proposes signaling between intermediate UE and A-IoT devices to suspend / stop and resume the ongoing A-IoT procedure.

[0215] In an embodiment, when the intermediate UE resumes its RRC connection, either the ongoing A-IoT procedure is suspended or the (new) serving RAN node determines and informs whether / for how long time the intermediate UE can continue to perform the A-IoT procedure.

[0216] In an embodiment, the RAN node may suspend triggering new A-IoT communication and / or scheduling Uu communication if it determines that there may be A-IoT procedure being performed by UE reader temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0217] In an embodiment, it proposes mechanisms for the RAN node to determine whether there is A-IoT procedure being performed by UE reader temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0218] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE may receive instructions whether any information provided by the AIoT device or result stemming from the communication with the AIoT device has to be provided to the network or has to be discarded or whether the operation with the AIoT device (s) need to be repeated.

[0219] In an embodiment, in case more than one AIoT enabled RAN node is involved in the temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage scenario (re-connect after RLF, handover) , protocol means are introduced. For the involved AIoT enabled RAN nodes to enable the new / target RAN node to provide pending results from to communication with the AIoT device (s) to the AIoT enabled CN. For the involved AIoT enabled RAN nodes to exchange information about the status of the ongoing AIoT transaction.

[0220] Embodiments

[0221] Two options are elaborated on how a UE reader to handle the interruption caused when the UE reader is in “temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage” .

[0222] In an embodiment (e.g., Option 1) , UE reader may suspend the on-going A-IoT sessions or transactions (the details on how the suspension is triggered is described in later embodiments) .

[0223] In an embodiment, the UE reader may send a first signaling to devices (the dedicated resources for A-IoT communication configured when the UE reader has connection could be used by the UE reader and / or devices for exchanging the first signaling) indicating that the on-going sessions / transactions are suspended.

[0224] In an embodiment, after the connection is restored (e.g., before the timers are expired) , the UE reader may send a second signaling to devices indicating that the paused sessions / transactions can be resumed. In this case, the UE reader and devices use either the previous dedicated A-IoT resources (e.g. assigned by the gNB before out of connection occurs) or newly assigned dedicated A-IoT resources (in case the UE reader hands over to a target RAN node) .

[0225] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE (UE reader) may further indicate the A-IoT devices that the ongoing procedure should be terminated and considered as not successful when the estimated or the actual A-IoT procedure suspending time exceeds a certain (pre) defined threshold. This may be implemented by sending, to the devices, a subsequent DL message including the termination indication after the A-IoT paging message and the suspension indication. Such an indication may instruct the target devices to reset its inventory / command flag / status and consider the inventory / command procedure cancelled / terminated.

[0226] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE may send a sleep indication to instruct the target devices to go to sleep / skip monitoring DL message for a certain time (i.e., the sleep time) when e.g., the intermediate UE is not allowed to perform the A-IoT procedure. This could save the device energy consumption. Alternatively, when the A-IoT device receives the sleep indication, it may go to sleep and wake up when receive another wake up signaling from the intermediate UE. In this case the sleep indication may not indicate the sleep time.

[0227] In an embodiment, the above indications can be triggered based on the instruction / indication from serving gNB or by the UE reader itself (e.g., in case of physical layer link failure) . In the latter case the UE reader determines the triggering of the indications taking into account information including a type of procedure (inventory, command, disabling, etc. ) ; the number of target devices; a status of the ongoing procedure (e.g., how many inventory / access rounds have been performed for an inventory request, how complete (percentage of responses) the inventory) .

[0228] FIG. 6 shows a flowchart of a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method is related to option 1 –on-going sessions (s) is paused.

[0229] At step 601. Selection of UE reader is performed between CN / AIoT NF and gNB.

[0230] At step 602. CN / AIoT NF sends A-IoT service request to gNB or UE reader.

[0231] At step 603. gNB signals dedicated resource allocation to UE reader.

[0232] At step 604. An A-IoT session (s)  / transaction (s) is triggered from UE reader to A-IoT devices.

[0233] At step 605. Out of connection event is triggered at UE reader.

[0234] At step 606. UE reader signals to A-IoT devices that A-IoT session (s)  / transaction (s) is paused.

[0235] At step 606. On-going session (s)  / transaction (s) is paused between UE reader and A-IoT devices.

[0236] At step 607. Connection is restored at UE reader.

[0237] At step 608. UE reader signals to A-IoT devices that A-IoT session (s)  / transaction (s) is resumed.

[0238] At step 609. UE reader signals to the gNB that the failure cause after the connection is restored.

[0239] At step 610. A-IoT service response is sent from A-IoT devices to CN / AIoT NF via gNB.

[0240] In an embodiment (e.g., Option 2) , UE reader continues to perform the on-going A-IoT sessions or transactions (the details on when the continuation is allowed is described in later embodiments) . In this option, the gNB or the CN provides additional A-IoT resources to UE reader while the UE reader was in RRC_CONNECTED, and before out of connection event is triggered. The additional A-IoT resources may be only used for A-IoT communication when the UE reader is in temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0241] In an embodiment, the additional A-IoT resources can be used by the UE reader instead of dedicated assigned A-IoT resources to serve on-going sessions / transactions when the UE reader is temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage.

[0242] In an embodiment the additional A-IoT resources can be in any one of the below forms: ● Resources signaled in system information, e.g., common resource format; In this case, the additional common A-IoT resources may be shared among multiple UE readers temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage, The additional common A-IoT resources may be also signaled to the UE reader via dedicated RRC signaling (e.g., included in IE ServingCellCommon, via dedicated RRC signaling, e.g., reconfiguration with sync) ; or ● Dedicated A-IoT resources assigned by a target RAN node in case of (conditional) handover

[0243] In case the additional A-IoT resources are in common resource format, the UE reader may select one or multiple A-IoT resources from the common A-IoT resources for the A-IoT communication in an autonomous fashion. (e.g., random selection) .

[0244] The UE reader is therefore no need to pause on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions, which can be continued as if there is no interruption.

[0245] In an embodiment, the gNB may signal dedicated A-IoT resources (used when having connection) and additional A-IoT resources (used when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage) to a UE reader in the same or separate signaling messages, at the same time or at different time instants.

[0246] In an embodiment, the UE reader may signal the additional A-IoT resources to A-IoT devices. A-IoT devices may use those additional A-IoT resources to continue the A-IoT sessions / transactions.

[0247] In an embodiment, after the connection is restored, the UE reader may stop using the additional A-IoT resources and further signal dedicated A-IoT resources (which were allocated before out of connection occurs or newly allocated in case of handover) to A-IoT devices to continue the A-IoT session / transactions.

[0248] In an embodiment, if the connection cannot be restored (e.g., the timers are expired and the UE reader moves to RRC_IDLE) , the UE reader may stop using the additional A-IoT resources. The UE reader also needs to signal to A-IoT devices that the additional A-IoT resources cannot be used any more.

[0249] FIG. 7 shows a flowchart of a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method is related to option 2–on-going A-IoT sessions (s) continue using additional A-IoT common resources.

[0250] At step 711. Selection of UE reader is performed between CN / AIoT NF and gNB.

[0251] At step 712. CN / AIoT NF sends A-IoT service request to gNB or UE reader.

[0252] At step 713. gNB signals dedicated resource allocation and additional common resources to UE reader.

[0253] At step 714. An A-IoT session (s)  / transaction (s) is triggered from UE reader to A-IoT devices. UE reader signals dedicated resources to devices to A-IoT devices.

[0254] At step 715. Out of connection event is triggered at UE reader.

[0255] At step 716. UE reader signals additional common resources to A-IoT devices.

[0256] At step 717. UE reader stores A-IoT data received from A-IoT devices.

[0257] At step 718. On-going session (s)  / transaction (s) continues.

[0258] At step 719. Connection is restored at UE reader.

[0259] At step 720. Signal dedicated resources to devices

[0260] At step 721. UE reader signals to the gNB that the failure cause after the connection is restored

[0261] At step 722. UE reader forwards stored A-IoT data to CN / AIoT NF.

[0262] At step 723. A-IoT service response is send from A-IoT devices to CN / AIoT NF via gNB.

[0263] In an embodiment, regardless of option 1 or option 2 is applied, after the connection is restored (i.e., before the timers are expired) , the UE reader may send a third signaling to the gNB and / or the CN indicating at least one of: 1) The on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions have been paused for a time period (e.g., X second) ; 2) The on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions have been resumed after the connection has been restored; 3) The cause for the interruption (e.g., RLF, handover, or RRC reestablishment) ; or 4) The (aggregated) responses it has received from the AIoT devices but has not sent to the gNB / CN yet.

[0264] In an embodiment, the gNB may maintain a timer. The timer may be started when e.g., the gNB triggers the UE reader to perform the A-IoT sessions / transactions. When the timer is expired, the gNB may send a signaling to the CN indicating at least one of: 1) The UE reader’s connection is expected to be lost; 2) The on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions associated with the UE reader cannot be completed; or 3) The expected failure cause (e.g., RLF, handover, or RRC reestablishment) .

[0265] Additionally, the gNB may send the results / responses which have been collected from devices so far, to the CN.

[0266] Additionally or instead, the CN may maintain a timer. The timer may be started when e.g., the CN sends the A-IoT service request to the UE reader to perform the A-IoT sessions / transactions. When the timer is expired, the CN may conclude at least one of: 1) The UE reader’s connection is expected to be lost; or 2) The on-going A-IoT sessions / transactions associated with the UE reader cannot be completed.

[0267] In an embodiment, as an additional option, the UE reader may send a signaling to AoT devices and / or the CN indicating the on-going session / transaction or service or procedure is terminated without waiting for the connection to be restored, upon in temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage. In addition, the UE reader may also perform at least one of the below actions: 1) Send a signaling to the CN indicating at least one of: The on-going session / transaction / service / procedure has been terminated, or The reason for the termination, e.g., RLF, handover, etc.; or 2) Send the results (received from the devices) which have not been sent to the CN, to the CN.

[0268] In an embodiment, the network may define at least one of the following policies for A-IoT communications when the intermediate UE is temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage: 1) The maximum Tx power of R2D transmission is not more than a (pre) defined threshold; 2) The maximum TB size or data rate of R2D transmission is not more than a (pre) defined threshold; 3) Apply LBT before performing R2D transmission; or 4) The intermediate UE is only allowed to receive D2R transmissions from A-IoT devices (i.e., R2D transmission is suspended) .

[0269] In an embodiment, the network node (e.g., the serving gNB) may determine and indicate whether an intermediate UE can continue to perform an A-IoT procedure that is already initiated or can initiate new AIoT procedure (provided that the configuration / AIoT service request related information / command is already provided to the intermediate UE by gNB / CN and stored at intermediate UE) when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage. The network node may inform the determination to the intermediate UE in control signaling containing the A-IoT service request and / or inform in a separate control signaling before or after the control signaling containing the A-IoT service request. The separate control signaling may be either a common control signaling or a dedicated signaling. The intermediate UE shall / may always follow the latest received instruction, e.g., the intermediate UE shall / may only continue to perform an ongoing A-IoT procedure when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage if the latest received instruction instructs it to do so. Alternatively, the instruction received in dedicated control signaling or A-IoT paging message may take precedence over that received in common control signaling, e.g., the intermediate UE shall / may always follow the latest received instruction included in dedicated control signaling or A-IoT paging message.

[0270] In an embodiment, when the UE reader indicates to the network (gNB) an early RLF warning, it may also send (aggregated) responses received from AIoT devices and stored in its buffer. This can be beneficial because without such behavior, the UE reader would discard all the data and flush the buffer when it cannot resume the connection and goes to RRC idle. The sending of the AIoT data can be done in combination with signaling of the early RLF warning (e.g., in the same transmission) or in a separate transmission.

[0271] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE may be provided with a response time window e.g. associated with the A-IoT service request, the response time window may be provided by the CN or the RAN node. If the intermediate UE is unable to reply within the response time window, the network may assume that the ongoing A-IoT procedure has failed due to e.g., the intermediate UE being out of connection, and the intermediate UE may discard the stored responses (if any) received from the A-IoT devices.

[0272] In an embodiment, the network node may also indicate the maximum allowed time that the intermediate UE can perform A-IoT communication after temporary going out of connection (if this is permitted) .

[0273] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE shall / may no longer start new A-IoT communication and optionally stop ongoing A-IoT communication when any of the following conditions fulfilled: 1) The time that has passed since the intermediate UE temporary goes out of connection is more than the maximum allowed time; 2) In case of HO, the intermediate UE may start to count the time (e.g., start a timer) when the HO timer (e.g., T304) is started. In case of RLF, the intermediate UE may start to count the time (e.g., start a timer) when the RLF timer (i.e., T310) is started. The timer value may be initially set to the maximum allowed time and the above condition is fulfilled when the timer expires; 3) The intermediate UE goes to RRC idle (or RRC inactive) ; or 4) The intermediate UE resumes its RRC connection. This condition may only be considered when resuming in a RAN node different from the original serving RAN node of the intermediate UE. This is to avoid collision with potential Uu / A-IoT communication performed by (intermediate) UE (s) served by the RAN node wherein the RRC connection is resumed) .

[0274] In an embodiment, the network node may not indicate the maximum allowed time explicitly. Instead it may be (pre) configured that the first condition above is regarded as fulfilled when the RLF timer (i.e., T310) or the HO timer (i.e., T304) or the reestablishment timer (i.e., T301 or T311) expires.

[0275] In an embodiment, an intermediate UE’s Uu connection may be regarded as not stable for controlling / delivering A-IoT communication if the intermediate UE receives consecutive (e.g. M310) out of synch from lower layers. The value of M310 can be set either the same or different as the value of N310 for RLF trigger. N310 is described in 3GPP TS 38.331 V18.3.0.

[0276] In an embodiment, when the intermediate UE resumes its connection before the relevant timer (s) expire, it may send a wake-up signal or a resume signaling to the A-IoT devices to resume the A-IoT procedures. Otherwise, if intermediate UE does not resume its connection before the relevant timer (s) expire, the intermediate UE may send an indication to the A-IoT devices indicating that the intermediate UE cannot resume its connection and the ongoing A-IoT procedure has to be terminated and considered as not successful.

[0277] In an embodiment, when the intermediate UE resumes its RRC connection, the (new) serving RAN node may inform the intermediate UE whether / for how long time it can continue to perform the A-IoT communication. The (new) serving RAN node may allow this if e.g., there is currently no Uu / A-IoT communication performed by (intermediate) UE (s) served by the RAN node. The RAN node may inform this information in the message indicating successful RRC connection resumption, e.g., RRCReestablishment message in case of RRC reestablishment and RRCReconfiguration message in case of (conditional) HO, or inform in a Medium Access Control (MAC) Control Element (CE) sent together with the said message.

[0278] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE may inform the (new) serving RAN node whether it still has ongoing A-IoT procedure being performed / suspended and / or optionally also inform at most for how long time it can continue to perform the procedure based on the maximum allowed time minus the time it has performed the procedure when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage. The intermediate UE may also indicate the transaction ID related to the ongoing A-IoT procedure. The (new) serving RAN node may take this information info into account when determining whether / for how long time the intermediate UE can continue to perform the A-IoT communication and / or how to schedule A-IoT / Uu communication performed by other UE (s) served by the RAN node. The intermediate UE may inform this information in the first message sent to the (new) serving RAN node when resuming RRC connection, e.g., RRCReestablishmentRequest message in case of RRC reestablishment and RRCReconfigurationComplete message in case of (conditional) HO, or inform in a MAC CE sent together with the said message.

[0279] In an embodiment, the RAN node may suspend triggering new A-IoT communication and / or scheduling Uu communication if an intermediate UE previously served by it is temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage and has an A-IoT procedure being performed. The RAN node could regard that an intermediate UE which was previously served by it and is now temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage has an A-IoT procedure being performed if at least one of the following conditions are fulfilled: 1) the intermediate UE is allowed to continue performing A-IoT procedure when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage; 2) the (estimated) time that has passed since the intermediate UE temporary goes out of connection is not more than the maximum allowed time (optionally plus a margin) . the RAN node may evaluate this condition in the following ways: it may start a timer when sending the HO command to the intermediate UE or when receiving an early RLF warning from the intermediate UE. Furthermore, it may deduce the time at which the UE very likely triggers HO or encounters RLF based on the UE’s measurement report and some other assistance info and the gNB’s implementation, and starts the timer at the deduced time. The RAN node could set the timer value to the maximum allowed time and optionally plus a margin, and regards this condition is fulfilled as long as the timer is running; 3) In case the HO / RLF / reestablishment timer based condition as described in the above embodiment is applied, the RAN node may start a timer as described above, and set the timer value as following: ● If the condition is based on RLF timer, the timer value may be set to RLF timer value optionally plus a margin; ● If the condition is based on HO timer, the timer value may be set to HO timer value optionally plus a margin; or ● If the condition is based on reestablishment timer, the timer value may be set to (RLF timer value + reestablishment timer value) or (HO timer value + reestablishment timer) optionally plus a margin, depending on whether the reestablishment is triggered by RLF or HO failure. ● Correspondingly the RAN node may regard this condition is fulfilled as long as the timer is running; or 4) It has not completed HO (e.g., receiving RRCReconfigurationComplete message from the intermediate UE) or reestablishment (e.g., sending RRCReestablishment message to the intermediate UE) with the intermediate UE, nor informed by another RAN node that the intermediate UE has resumed its RRC connection.

[0280] In an embodiment, the intermediate UE may receive instructions whether any information provided by the AIoT device or result stemming from the communication with the AIoT device has to be provided to the network or has to be discarded or whether the operation with the AIoT device (s) need to be repeated.

[0281] In an embodiment, in case more than one AIoT enabled RAN node is involved in the temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage scenario (re-connect after RLF, handover) , protocol means are introduced: ● for the involved AIoT enabled RAN nodes to enable the new / target RAN node to provide pending results from to communication with the AIoT device (s) to the AIoT enabled CN; and / or ● For the involved AIoT enabled RAN nodes to exchange information about the status of the ongoing AIoT transaction.

[0282] Embodiments herein may provide many advantages, of which a non-exhaustive list of examples follows. In some embodiments herein, with the proposed solutions whether / how an intermediate terminal device can continue to perform a (ongoing) session or transaction or service or procedure when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage is under the control of the network. In some embodiments herein, the network node (e.g. RAN node) could take e.g. the Uu and A-IoT traffic situation in the same or different cells into account when making the determination to avoid that allowing (e.g. A-IoT) communication when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage negatively impacts the performance of Uu communication and / or other (A-IoT) communication. In some embodiments herein, the collision avoidance mechanism may improve the performance of the (e.g. A-IoT) communication performed when temporary out of connection or temporary out of coverage which is crucial (as otherwise the device energy is wasted if the (e.g. A-IoT) communication is not reliable) . The embodiments herein are not limited to the features and advantages mentioned above. A person skilled in the art will recognize additional features and advantages upon reading the following detailed description.

[0283] FIG. 8 is a block diagram showing an apparatus suitable for practicing some embodiments of the disclosure. For example, the network node, the first terminal device or the second terminal device described above may be implemented as or through the apparatus 800.

[0284] The apparatus 800 comprises at least one processor 821, such as a digital processor (DP) , and at least one memory (MEM) 822 coupled to the processor 821. The apparatus 800 may comprise a transmitter TX and receiver RX 823 coupled to the processor 821. The MEM 822 stores a program (PROG) 824. The PROG 824 may include instructions that, when executed on the associated processor 821, enable the apparatus 800 to operate in accordance with the embodiments of the present disclosure. A combination of the at least one processor 821 and the at least one MEM 822 may form processing means 825 adapted to implement various embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0285] Various embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented by computer program executable by one or more of the processor 821, software, firmware, hardware or in a combination thereof.

[0286] The MEM 822 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment and may be implemented using any suitable data storage technology, such as semiconductor based memory devices, magnetic memory devices and systems, optical memory devices and systems, fixed memories and removable memories, as non-limiting examples.

[0287] The processor 821 may be of any type suitable to the local technical environment, and may include one or more of general purpose computers, special purpose computers, microprocessors, digital signal processors (DSPs) and processors based on multicore processor architecture, as non-limiting examples.

[0288] In an embodiment where the apparatus is implemented as or at the first terminal device, the memory 822 contains instructions executable by the processor 821, whereby the first terminal device operates according to any of the methods performed by the first terminal device as described above.

[0289] In an embodiment where the apparatus is implemented as or at the second terminal device, the memory 822 contains instructions executable by the processor 821, whereby the second terminal device operates according to any of the methods performed by the second terminal device as described above.

[0290] In an embodiment where the apparatus is implemented as or at the network node, the memory 822 contains instructions executable by the processor 821, whereby the network node operates according to any of the methods performed by the network node as described above.

[0291] With function units, the network node, the first terminal device or the second terminal device may not need a fixed processor or memory, any computing resource and storage resource may be arranged from the network node, the first terminal device or the second terminal device in the communication system. The introduction of virtualization technology and network computing technology may improve the usage efficiency of the network resources and the flexibility of the network.

[0292] Further, the exemplary overall commutation system including the terminal device (e.g. the first terminal device or the second terminal device) and the network node will be introduced as below.

[0293] FIG. 9 shows an example of a communication system 9100 in accordance with some embodiments.

[0294] In the example, the communication system 9100 includes a telecommunication network 9102 that includes an access network 9104, such as a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network 9106, which includes one or more core network nodes 9108. The access network 9104 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes 9110a and 9110b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes 9110) , or any other similar 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access nodes or non-3GPP access points. Moreover, as will be appreciated by those of skill in the art, a network node is not necessarily limited to an implementation in which a radio portion and a baseband portion are supplied and integrated by a single vendor. Thus, it will be understood that network nodes include disaggregated implementations or portions thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication network 9102 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the telecommunication network 9102 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication network 9102, including one or more network nodes 9110 and / or core network nodes 9108.

[0295] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes 9110 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs 9112a, 9112b, 9112c, and 9112d (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 9112) to the core network 9106 over one or more wireless connections.

[0296] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system 9100 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system 9100 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.

[0297] The UEs 9112 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes 9110 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes 9110 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs 9112 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network 9102 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network 9102.

[0298] In the depicted example, the core network 9106 connects the network nodes 9110 to one or more host computing systems, such as host 9116. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network 9106 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 9108) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 9108. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) , Mobility Management Entity (MME) , Home Subscriber Server (HSS) , Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Session Management Function (SMF) , Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , and / or a User Plane Function (UPF) .

[0299] The host 9116 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 9104 and / or the telecommunication network 9102. The host 9116 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.

[0300] As a whole, the communication system 9100 of FIG. 9 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) ; Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ; Long Term Evolution (LTE) , and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G) ; wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards (WiFi) ; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) , Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.

[0301] In some examples, the telecommunication network 9102 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network 9102 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network 9102. For example, the telecommunications network 9102 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)  / Massive IoT services to yet further UEs.

[0302] In some examples, the UEs 9112 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 9104 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network 9104. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single-or multi-RAT or multi-standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) , such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio –Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) .

[0303] In the example, the hub 9114 communicates with the access network 9104 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 9112c and / or 9112d) and network nodes (e.g., network node 9110b) . In some examples, the hub 9114 may be a controller, router, content source and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub 9114 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network 9106 for the UEs. As another example, the hub 9114 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes 9110, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub 9114. As another example, the hub 9114 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub 9114 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR device, display, loudspeaker, or other media delivery device, the hub 9114 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub 9114 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub 9114 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy IoT devices.

[0304] The hub 9114 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to the network node 9110b. The hub 9114 may also allow for a different communication scheme and / or schedule between the hub 9114 and UEs (e.g., UE 9112c and / or 9112d) , and between the hub 9114 and the core network 9106. In other examples, the hub 9114 is connected to the core network 9106 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Moreover, the hub 9114 may be configured to connect to an M2M service provider over the access network 9104 and / or to another UE over a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs may establish a wireless connection with the network nodes 9110 while still connected via the hub 9114 via a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, the hub 9114 may be a dedicated hub –that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from the UEs from / to the network node 9110b. In other embodiments, the hub 9114 may be a non-dedicated hub –that is, a device which is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and network node 9110b, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or end point for certain data channels.

[0305] FIG. 10 shows a UE 1000 in accordance with some embodiments. The UE 1000 presents additional details of some embodiments of the UE 9112 of FIG. 9. As used herein, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other UEs. Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smart phone, mobile phone, cell phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA) , wireless cameras, gaming console or device, music storage / playback device, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , an Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) device, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE) , vehicle, vehicle-mounted or vehicle embedded / integrated wireless device, etc. Other examples include any UE identified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , including a narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) UE, a machine type communication (MTC) UE, and / or an enhanced MTC (eMTC) UE.

[0313] The processing circuitry 1002 may be configured to communicate with an access network or other network using the communication interface 1012. The communication interface 1012 may comprise one or more communication subsystems and may include or be communicatively coupled to an antenna 1022. The communication interface 1012 may include one or more transceivers used to communicate, such as by communicating with one or more remote transceivers of another device capable of wireless communication (e.g., another UE or a network node in an access network) . Each transceiver may include a transmitter 1018 and / or a receiver 1020 appropriate to provide network communications (e.g., optical, electrical, frequency allocations, and so forth) . Moreover, the transmitter 1018 and receiver 1020 may be coupled to one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 1022) and may share circuit components, software or firmware, or alternatively be implemented separately.

[0314] In the illustrated embodiment, communication functions of the communication interface 1012 may include cellular communication, Wi-Fi communication, LPWAN communication, data communication, voice communication, multimedia communication, short-range communications such as Bluetooth, near-field communication, location-based communication such as the use of the global positioning system (GPS) to determine a location, another like communication function, or any combination thereof. Communications may be implemented in according to one or more communication protocols and / or standards, such as IEEE 802.11, Code Division Multiplexing Access (CDMA) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , GSM, LTE, New Radio (NR) , UMTS, WiMax, Ethernet, transmission control protocol / internet protocol (TCP / IP) , synchronous optical networking (SONET) , Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) , QUIC, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) , and so forth.

[0315] Regardless of the type of sensor, a UE may provide an output of data captured by its sensors, through its communication interface 1012, via a wireless connection to a network node. Data captured by sensors of a UE can be communicated through a wireless connection to a network node via another UE. The output may be periodic (e.g., once every 15 minutes if it reports the sensed temperature) , random (e.g., to even out the load from reporting from several sensors) , in response to a triggering event (e.g., when moisture is detected an alert is sent) , in response to a request (e.g., a user initiated request) , or a continuous stream (e.g., a live video feed of a patient) .

[0319] In practice, any number of UEs may be used together with respect to a single use case. For example, a first UE might be or be integrated in a drone and provide the drone’s speed information (obtained through a speed sensor) to a second UE that is a remote controller operating the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE may adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g. by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone’s speed. The first and / or the second UE can also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE might comprise the sensor and the actuator, and handle communication of data for both the speed sensor and the actuators.

[0320] FIG. 11 shows a network node 1100 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, network node refers to equipment capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes or equipment, in a telecommunication network. Examples of network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points) , base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, Node Bs, evolved Node Bs (eNBs) and NR NodeBs (gNBs) ) , O-RAN nodes or components of an O-RAN node (e.g., O-RU, O-DU, O-CU) .

[0321] Base stations may be categorized based on the amount of coverage they provide (or, stated differently, their transmit power level) and so, depending on the provided amount of coverage, may be referred to as femto base stations, pico base stations, micro base stations, or macro base stations. A base station may be a relay node or a relay donor node controlling a relay. A network node may also include one or more (or all) parts of a distributed radio base station such as centralized digital units, distributed units (e.g., in an O-RAN access node) and / or remote radio units (RRUs) , sometimes referred to as Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) . Such remote radio units may or may not be integrated with an antenna as an antenna integrated radio. Parts of a distributed radio base station may also be referred to as nodes in a distributed antenna system (DAS) .

[0331] The power source 1108 provides power to the various components of network node 1100 in a form suitable for the respective components (e.g., at a voltage and current level needed for each respective component) . The power source 1108 may further comprise, or be coupled to, power management circuitry to supply the components of the network node 1100 with power for performing the functionality described herein. For example, the network node 1100 may be connectable to an external power source (e.g., the power grid, an electricity outlet) via an input circuitry or interface such as an electrical cable, whereby the external power source supplies power to power circuitry of the power source 1108. As a further example, the power source 1108 may comprise a source of power in the form of a battery or battery pack which is connected to, or integrated in, power circuitry. The battery may provide backup power should the external power source fail.

[0332] Embodiments of the network node 1100 may include additional components beyond those shown in FIG. 11 for providing certain aspects of the network node’s functionality, including any of the functionality described herein and / or any functionality necessary to support the subject matter described herein. For example, the network node 1100 may include user interface equipment to allow input of information into the network node 1100 and to allow output of information from the network node 1100. This may allow a user to perform diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the network node 1100. In some embodiments providing a core network node, such as core network node 9108 of FIG. 9, some components, such as the radio front-end circuitry 1118 and the RF transceiver circuitry 1112 may be omitted.

[0333] FIG. 12 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 1200 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 1200 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment 1200 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface. Virtualization may facilitate distributed implementations of a network node, UE, core network node, or host.

[0334] Applications 1202 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment Q400 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0335] Hardware 1204 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 1206 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs 1208a and 1208b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 1208) , and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 1206 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 1208.

[0336] The VMs 1208 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 1206. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 1202 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 1208, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0337] In the context of NFV, a VM 1208 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 1208, and that part of hardware 1204 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 1208 on top of the hardware 1204 and corresponds to the application 1202.

[0338] Hardware 1204 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 1204 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 1204 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 1210, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 1202. In some embodiments, hardware 1204 is coupled to one or more radio units that each includes one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 1212 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0339] Although the devices described herein may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node, and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.

[0340] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.
