Description

AQUEOUS ACRYLIC / POLYURETHANE DISPERSION AND WATERBORNE COATING COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAMETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to an aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion. The present application further relates to a method for preparing the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion and a waterborne coating composition containing the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion.BACKGROUND

[0002] Polyurethane is widely used in a variety of applications due to its excellent properties. However, with people's increasing attention to environmental protection issues, more and more stringent ecological and other legal regulations have restricted the development of traditional solvent-based polyurethanes, which has also directly stimulated the development and application of waterborne polyurethanes.

[0003] Waterborne polyurethane refers to the polyurethane resin formed by dissolving or dispersing polyurethane in water. The preparation methods thereof mainly include the traditional acetone method and the prepolymer dispersion method. When preparing waterborne polyurethane by the traditional acetone method, mainly, an excessive amount of polyisocyanate is reacted with oligomer polyol and small-molecular polyol with hydrophilic groups to prepare an isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer, and then a small-molecular diol is used for chain extension reaction to obtain high-molecular-weight polyurethane. During the acetone method, a large amount of low-boiling solvents such as acetone is added to reduce the viscosity of the system, and the solvent is removed by vacuum after water transfer. In this method, a large amount of energy is consumed for solvent removal, and it is difficult to recycle and reuse the solvent.

[0004] When preparing waterborne polyurethane by the prepolymer dispersion method, mainly, an excessive amount of polyisocyanate is reacted with oligomer polyol and small-molecular polyol with hydrophilic groups to prepare a polyurethane prepolymer, and an appropriate amount of organic solvent is added during the process to reduce the viscosity. Subsequently, the reaction temperature is lowered, and a neutralizing agent and a large amount of water are added to form a polyurethane prepolymer dispersion. After complete dispersion, a polyamine chain extender is added to carry out a chain extension reaction with isocyanate groups, and finally the organic solvent is removed to obtain the final waterborne polyurethane. During the prepolymer dispersion method, solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidone, N-ethylpyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, and diethylformamide are used to reduce the viscosity, and these solvents are usually difficult to remove, resulting in the problem of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) .

[0005] The methods for preparing waterborne polyurethane have been gradually improved after years of development. However, it is inevitable to use organic solvents to reduce the viscosity during the preparation process, and the introduced organic solvents usually need to be removed by the heating and vacuum distillation method. Although the recovery of solvents can be achieved, the reuse of the recovered organic solvents is limited because the recovered organic solvents are complex mixtures. Therefore, the dependence on organic solvents in the current waterborne polyurethane preparation process has caused a waste of resources and energy, and it is difficult to ensure that the prepared products are completely solvent-free, which limits the industrial production and daily use of waterborne polyurethane products and has become a technical bottleneck restricting its development.

[0006] Therefore, the coating industry still needs waterborne polyurethane dispersions and the preparation methods thereof that can at least overcome the above-mentioned defects.SUMMARY

[0007] The present application meets the urgent needs of the above coating industry and provides an environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane product with balanced properties.

[0008] In particular, an aspect of the present application provides an aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion comprising an acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin formed from a monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprising: (i) at least one polyisocyanate; (ii) at least one oligomer polyol; (iii) at least one small-molecular polyol; (iv) at least one acrylate monomer; (v) at least one acrylate reactive diluent different from (iv) , the acrylate reactive diluent having secondary hydroxyl groups; and (vi) at least one water-dispersibility enhancer; wherein the ratio of isocyanate reactive groups to isocyanate groups in the monomer mixture is greater than 1.0, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion has a solid content in the range of 40-50 wt%, and the acrylic modified polyurethane hybrid resin has a number average molecular weight in the range of 2000-10000 g / mol.

[0009] Another aspect of the present application provides a method for preparing the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, comprising: (1) adding at least one oligomer polyol and at least one polyisocyanate to a reactor, raising the temperature to 75-95℃ for reaction; (2) cooling down to below 65℃ and then adding a small-molecular polyol, a water-dispersibility enhancer, and at least one acrylate monomer and a polymerization inhibitor, and raising the temperature to 75-95℃ for the reaction until the content of isocyanate groups in the reaction system is less than 0.5%; (3) cooling down to below 45℃ and adding a neutralizing agent, followed by the addition of at least one acrylate reactive diluent; and (4) adding water, an initiator and a reducing agent to obtain the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion; wherein the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion comprises an acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin formed from a monomer mixture; wherein the monomer mixture comprises, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, (i) 15-40 wt%of at least one polyisocyanate; (ii) 20-55 wt%of at least one oligomer polyol; (iii) 3-25 wt%of at least one small-molecular polyol; (iv) 1-25 wt%of at least one acrylate monomer; (v) 1-25 wt%of at least one acrylate reactive diluent different from (iv) ; the acrylate reactive diluent having a secondary hydroxyl group; and (vi) 2-20 wt%of at least one water-dispersibility enhancer; wherein the ratio of isocyanate reactive groups to isocyanate groups in the monomer mixture is greater than 1.0, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion has a solid content in the range of 40-50 wt%, and the acrylic modified polyurethane hybrid resin has a number average molecular weight in the range of 2000-10000 g / mol.

[0010] A further aspect of the present application provides a waterborne coating composition comprising: (i) the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application or the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion obtained by the method according to the present application; and (ii) optionally a crosslinking agent.

[0011] Another further aspect of the present application provides an article, comprising: a substrate having at least one major surface; and a coating applied directly or indirectly to the major surface of the substrate, the coating being formed from the waterborne coating composition according to the present application.

[0012] The inventors of the present application have pioneered in providing an aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, which contains an acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin formed from a monomer mixture, wherein the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin has a number average molecular weight in the range of 2000-10000 g / mol, preferably in the range of 4000-8000 g / mol. Preferably, based on the total weight of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, the hydroxyl content in the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion is 1.1-3%by weight. A waterborne coating composition substantially free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be formulated from such an aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion.

[0013] The inventors of the present application surprisingly found that the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application is environmentally friendly, and the viscosity during its preparation process can be controlled normally. It meets the requirement of low viscosity without sacrificing properties such as molecular weight. The performance thereof is no different from that of waterborne polyurethanes synthesized by the traditional acetone method or the prepolymer method, and it meets the market demand for waterborne polyurethanes.

[0014] The inventors of the present application also surprisingly found that, compared with other waterborne polyurethane resins commonly used in the coating market, an acrylate reactive diluent with secondary hydroxyl groups is used in the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application. This diluent itself has a low viscosity and greater steric hindrance, and has a better effect on viscosity reduction. Meanwhile, it contains secondary hydroxyl groups, which can increase the hydroxyl content and further increase the crosslinking density with crosslinking agents.

[0015] Therefore, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application can be formulated to form a waterborne coating composition with lower VOC emissions.

[0016] The details of one or more embodiments of the disclosure are set forth in the following description. Other features, objects, and advantages of the disclosure will be apparent from the description and from the claims.DETAILED DESCRIPTIONDefinitions

[0027] In a preferred embodiment, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion has a solid content of at least 42%by weight based on the weight of the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin and a viscosity of 90 mPa·sor less as measured by a BROOKFIELD viscometer at 25℃. In a more preferred embodiment, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion has a solid content of at least 43%by weight based on the weight of the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin and a viscosity of 89 mPa·sor less as measured by a BROOKFIELD viscometer at 25℃.

[0028] In the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, the molecular weight of the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin is an important parameter that affects the viscosity of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion. In one embodiment of the present application, the number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin is in the range of 2000-10000 g / mol, preferably in the range of 4000-8000 g / mol. The molecular weight can be determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) , for example, Agilent 1260.

[0037] Polycaprolactone polyols are oligomers or polymers obtained by ring-opening polymerization of caprolactone in the presence of a diol or a higher polyol. Suitable diols or higher polyols are the aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diols mentioned in connection with the polycarbonate polyols, particularly 1, 4-butanediol, 1, 6-hexanediol, neopentyl glycol, diethylene glycol, and alcohols with more than 2 hydroxyl groups.

[0038] In the embodiments according to the present application, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprises 20-55%by weight, preferably 22-50%by weight, more preferably 25-50%by weight of component (ii) .

[0039] The small-molecular polyols according to the present application comprise one or more of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1, 3-propanediol, 2, 4-diethyl-1, 5-pentanediol, 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexanediol, trimethylolpropane, glycerol, trimethylolethane, pentaerythritol, xylitol and sorbitol.

[0040] In the embodiments according to the present application, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprises 3-25%by weight, preferably 4-20%by weight, more preferably 4-18%by weight of component (iii) .

[0041] In the embodiments according to the present application, the ratio of isocyanate reactive groups to isocyanate groups in the monomer mixture is greater than 1.0.

[0042] Based on the total weight of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, the hydroxyl content in the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion is 1.1-3%by weight. When the hydroxyl content of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion is within the above range, the crosslinking density with the crosslinking agent is higher and the fullness of the resulting coating will be better.

[0043] In the monomer mixture according to the present application, component (iii) is at least one acrylate monomer. Suitable component (iii) suitable for the present application includes C1-C20 alkyl (meth) acrylates.

[0044] Suitable C1-C20 alkyl methacrylates include, but are not limited to, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, sec-butyl methacrylate, tert-butyl methacrylate, pentyl methacrylate, hexyl methacrylate, heptyl methacrylate, octyl methacrylate, 2-octyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, nonyl methacrylate, 2-methyloctyl methacrylate, 2-tert-butylheptyl methacrylate, 3-isopropylheptyl methacrylate, decyl methacrylate, undecyl methacrylate, 5-methylundecyl methacrylate, dodecyl methacrylate, 2-methyldodecyl methacrylate, tridecyl methacrylate, 5-methyltridecyl methacrylate, tetradecyl methacrylate, pentadecyl methacrylate, hexadecyl methacrylate, 2-methylhexadecyl methacrylate, heptadecyl methacrylate, 5-isopropylheptadecyl methacrylate, 5-ethyloctadecyl methacrylate, octadecyl methacrylate, nonadecyl methacrylate, eicosyl methacrylate, cycloalkyl methacrylates (such as, for example, cyclopentyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, 3-vinyl-2-butylcyclohexyl methacrylate, cycloheptyl methacrylate, cyclooctyl methacrylate) , bornyl methacrylate, and isobornyl methacrylate. Preference is given to methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, or tert-butyl methacrylate, and particular preference is given to methyl methacrylate, tert-butyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate.

[0045] Suitable C1-C20 alkyl acrylates include, but are not limited to, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, propyl acrylate, isopropyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, sec-butyl acrylate, tert-butyl acrylate, pentyl acrylate, hexyl acrylate, heptyl acrylate, octyl acrylate, 2-octyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, nonyl acrylate, 2-methyl-octyl acrylate, 2-tert-butylheptyl acrylate, 3-isopropylheptyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, undecyl acrylate, 5-methylundecyl acrylate, dodecyl acrylate, 2-methyldodecyl acrylate, tridecyl acrylate, 5-methyltridecyl acrylate, tetradecyl acrylate, pentadecyl acrylate, hexadecyl acrylate, 2-methylhexadecyl acrylate, heptadecyl acrylate, 5-isopropylheptadecyl acrylate, 5-ethyloctadecyl acrylate, octadecyl acrylate, nonadecyl acrylate, eicosyl acrylate, cycloalkyl acrylates (such as, for example, cyclopentyl acrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, 3-vinyl-2-butylcyclohexyl acrylate, cycloheptyl acrylate, cyclooctyl acrylate) , bornyl acrylate, and isobornyl acrylate. Preference is given to ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, or cyclohexyl acrylate, and particular preference is given to ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.

[0046] Preferably, the acrylic monomers as component (iv) include one or more of methyl (meth) acrylate, butyl (meth) acrylate, isobutyl (meth) acrylate, ethyl (meth) acrylate, octyl (meth) acrylate and isobornyl (meth) acrylate, more preferably one or more of butyl (meth) acrylate, even more preferably include one or more of n-butyl acrylate, tert-butyl acrylate, n-butyl methacrylate and tert-butyl methacrylate, and most preferably n-butyl methacrylate. Such acrylic monomers have relatively more appropriate hardness and softness as well as polarity, and also have a higher efficiency in promoting the dissolution of the water-dispersibility enhancer. In addition, the introduction of relatively few acrylate segments can less affect the properties of the polyurethane segments.

[0047] Component (iv) plays a role in dissolving the solid powder of the water-dispersibility enhancer (preferably DMPA) and reducing the viscosity of the system during the preparation process of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, and after water dispersion, it polymerizes into a polyacrylic polymer, which can increase the overall solid content of the system and is beneficial to obtaining a waterborne coating composition with high fullness.

[0048] Therefore, in the embodiments according to the present application, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprises 1-25%by weight, preferably 2-24%by weight, more preferably 5-20%by weight of component (iv) .

[0049] The monomer mixture according to the present application further comprises at least one acrylate reactive diluent different from component (iv) as component (v) , and such acrylate reactive diluent has secondary hydroxyl group (s) .

[0050] In the embodiments according to the present application, component (v) includes one or more of hydroxyethyl (meth) acrylate, hydroxypropyl (meth) acrylate and tert-carbon glycerol (meth) acrylate, and preferably tert-carbon glycerol acrylate.

[0051] The inventors of the present application further surprisingly found that, compared with other waterborne polyurethane resins commonly used in the coating market, the acrylate reactive diluent with secondary hydroxyl group (s) is used in the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application. Such diluent itself has a low viscosity and greater steric hindrance, and has a better effect on viscosity reduction. Meanwhile, it contains secondary hydroxyl groups, which can increase the hydroxyl content and further increase the crosslinking density with crosslinking agents.

[0052] In the embodiments according to the present application, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprises 1-25%by weight, preferably 2-24%by weight, more preferably 3 22%by weight of component (v) .

[0053] Furthermore, in order to solve the technical problems described in the present application, the inventors introduced a polyol containing an anionic or potentially anionic water-dispersible group as a water-dispersibility enhancer. After being neutralized with an organic amine, a stable hydrophilic polyurethane prepolymer is formed. Such prepolymer acts as a reactive emulsifier and undergoes a copolymerization reaction with acrylic monomers, thereby preparing the aqueous acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin according to the present application.

[0054] The preferred anionic water-dispersible groups are carboxyl, phosphate or sulfonic acid groups. Preferred examples of such compounds include diols and triols containing carboxyl groups, such as dihydroxyalkanoic acids of 2, 2-dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) or 2, 2-dimethylolbutyric acid (DMBA) , especially DMPA. The water-dispersibility enhancer plays an important role in the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application. It not only participates in the chain growth process of the polyurethane prepolymer as a chain extender, but also endows the polyurethane prepolymer with the self-emulsifying property, enabling the polyurethane prepolymer to be stably dispersed in water to form a uniform dispersion.

[0055] Moreover, the addition of the water-dispersibility enhancer can improve various properties of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, such as improving the stability of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, reducing the particle size and increasing the viscosity.

[0056] Therefore, in the embodiments according to the present application, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, the monomer mixture comprises 2-20%by weight, preferably 3-18%by weight, more preferably 4-15%by weight of component (vi) .

[0057] The use of the water-dispersibility enhancer makes it unnecessary to use any co-solvents during the preparation process, which is truly environmentally friendly. Moreover, the viscosity can be controlled normally during the preparation process, and there is no need to sacrifice properties such as molecular weight to meet the requirement of low viscosity. The performance of the waterborne polyurethane according to the present application is comparable to that of waterborne polyurethanes synthesized by the traditional acetone method or the prepolymer method.

[0058] In the present application, there is no co-solvent during the preparation process of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion, truly achieving environmentally friendly and green production. Since a reactive emulsifier (hydrophilic polyurethane prepolymer) is first synthesized during the reaction process, the aqueous acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin can be further synthesized by the self-emulsification method. Such resin can be stably and uniformly dispersed in an aqueous solution with zero VOC, and it is an environmentally friendly product in the true sense.

[0059] The aqueous acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin according to the present application is formed from a monomer mixture comprising, relative to the total weight of the monomer mixture, (i) 15-40 wt%of at least one polyisocyanate; (ii) 20-55 wt%of at least one oligomer polyol; (iii) 3-25 wt%of at least one small-molecular polyol; (iv) 1-25 wt%of at least one acrylate monomer; (v) 1-25 wt%of at least one acrylate reactive diluent different from (iv) ; the acrylate reactive diluent having a secondary hydroxyl group; and (vi) 2-20 wt%of at least one water-dispersibility enhancer.

[0060] In the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin aggregates to form the dispersed phase. In certain embodiments, the dispersed phase has a particle size within the range of 50 nm to 200 nm. The size of the dispersed phase can be measured by the Z-average particle size known in the art, which means the size of the dispersed phase measured by the dynamic light scattering method, for example, using a Marvlen Zetasizer 3000HS micro particle size analyzer. In the embodiments of the present application, the dispersed phase has a particle size of 50-200 nm, preferably a particle size of 55-150 nm, and more preferably a particle size of 56-120 nm.

[0061] The objective of the present application is to provide an aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion containing an acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin and its solvent-free preparation method.

[0062] Therefore, another aspect of the present application provides a method for preparing the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, comprising: (1) adding at least one oligomer polyol and at least one polyisocyanate to a reactor, raising the temperature to 75-95℃ for reaction; (2) cooling down to below 65℃ and then adding a small-molecular polyol, a water-dispersibility enhancer, and at least one acrylate monomer and a polymerization inhibitor, and raising the temperature to 75-95℃ for the reaction until the content of isocyanate groups in the reaction system is less than 0.5%; (3) cooling down to below 45℃ and adding a neutralizing agent, followed by the addition of at least one acrylate reactive diluent; and (4) adding water, an initiator and a reducing agent to obtain the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion.

[0063] The aqueous acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin of the present application, adopting molecular structure design, is composed of polyurethane copolymer segments and acrylic copolymer segments.

[0064] In various embodiments, the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion contains no co-solvents. As used herein, the term "co-solvent" refers to solvents used other than the acrylate reactive diluents and polyols present in the polyol mixture. By way of example and without limitation, such co-solvents may include N-methylpyrrolidone, N-ethylpyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, diethylformamide, acetone and the like.

[0065] In various embodiments, the acrylic / polyurethane dispersion is prepared as a one-component system, i.e., in the form of an aqueous dispersion. In such embodiments, the polyurethane prepolymer is formed by mixing reactive components, including the polyol mixture, the water-dispersibility enhancer, the acrylate monomers and polymerization inhibitors, optionally catalysts, and an excess of the isocyanate component. For example, the reaction components may be added to the reactor, and the reaction may be allowed to proceed until a constant isocyanate content is obtained. In various embodiments, the reaction is allowed to proceed until the amount of unreacted isocyanate groups (%NCO) is at most about 1%. In a particular embodiment, the %NCO is about 0.5%. In some embodiments, prior to dispersion in water, at least a portion of the acrylate reactive diluent is added to reduce viscosity and assist in dispersing.

[0066] Cooling to below 45℃ and then adding the acrylate reactive diluent with secondary hydroxyl group (s) can further reduce the viscosity so as to complete the aqueous conversion; and there is no need to remove the solvent, which reduces energy consumption. Meanwhile, because the secondary hydroxyl group in the acrylate reactive diluent can crosslink and cure with the crosslinking agent during the application process of the acrylic-modified polyurethane hybrid resin, the solid content of the coating is further increased and the crosslinking density is improved.

[0067] In the embodiments according to the present application, the polymerization inhibitor is selected from one or more of hydroquinone and p-methoxyphenol, and it is preferably present in an amount of 0.01-0.1%by weight relative to the total feed.

[0068] Prior to dispersing in water, the system is neutralized with a suitable neutralizing agent. The neutralizing agent may also be added to the water, wherein the prepolymer is dispersed in the water before dispersion occurs. Suitable neutralizing agents may be selected, for example, from triethylamine, N-ethylmorpholine, dimethylisopropylamine, ethyldiisopropylamine, dimethylcyclohexylamine, triethanolamine, dimethylethanolamine, ammonia, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and any desired mixtures thereof. Preferably, the neutralizing agent is selected from one or more of triethylamine and N, N-dimethylethanolamine, and the neutralizing agent is more preferably present in an amount of 0.5-3%by weight relative to the total feed.

[0069] After the prepolymer is dispersed in water, a suitable chain extender is optionally added to the resulting dispersion, and the dispersion will react with the remaining isocyanates and increase the molecular weight of the polymer. The NCO-reactive groups used in the chain extender generally contain amino groups, since both primary and secondary amines exhibit great reactivity toward NCO, but may also contain hydroxyl groups. The water present as the continuous phase in the dispersion can also be used as a chain extender in the absence of other reactive chain extenders. Suitable chain extenders include, for example, ethylene-1, 2-diamine, 1, 2- and 1, 3-diaminopropane, 1, 4-diaminobutane, 1, 6-diaminohexane, isophoronediamine, isomer mixtures of 2, 2, 4-and 2, 4, 4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine, 2-methylpentamethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, 4, 4'-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, hydrazine hydrate, and / or dimethylethylenediamine, diethanolamine, 3-amino-1-methylaminopropane, 3-amino-1-ethylaminopropane, 3-amino-1-cyclohexylaminopropane, 3-amino-1-methylaminobutane, alkanolamines (such as N-aminoethylethanolamine) , ethanolamine, 3-aminopropanol, neopentanolamine, adipic dihydrazide, oxalic dihydrazide, carbohydrazide, succinic dihydrazide, or long-chain amino-functional compounds such as polyether amines ( "Jeffamines" ) .

[0070] As mentioned above, the water-dispersibility enhancer plays a role in participating in the chain growth process of the polyurethane prepolymer as a chain extender during the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application, and also endows the polyurethane prepolymer with the self-emulsifying property, enabling the polyurethane prepolymer to be stably dispersed in water to form a uniform dispersion. Therefore, in a preferred embodiment, there is no need to additionally add a chain extender in the method according to the present application for preparing the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion.

[0071] After the polyurethane prepolymer is dispersed in water and grows, at least one acrylic monomer is added and polymerized. Any known initiator can be used to initiate the polymerization of the acrylic monomers. Examples of suitable initiators include, but are not limited to, one or more of peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, potassium peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, tert-amyl hydroperoxide and cumyl hydroperoxide; persulfates such as ammonium persulfate, potassium persulfate, sodium persulfate; perborates; and perphosphates; preferably peroxides, more preferably one or more of hydrogen peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, tert-amyl hydroperoxide and cumyl hydroperoxide. Generally, the initiator is present in an amount of 0.01-0.1%by weight relative to the total feed.

[0108] The preparation method of Comparative Example 3 was similar to that of Example 1, except that N-ethylpyrrolidone was used to replace component (v) and component (iv) was not added, as specifically shown in Table 1.Comparative Example 4

[0109] The preparation method of Comparative Example 4 was similar to that of Example 1, except that component (iv) was not added, as specifically shown in Table 1.Comparative Example 5

[0110] The preparation method of Comparative Example 5 is similar to that of Example 1, except that component (v) was not added, as specifically shown in Table 1.

[0111] In addition, during the preparation process, the viscosity of the reaction system was tested after each step of the above method. Among them, during the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersions according to Examples 1-5 and Comparative Example 1, the viscosity of the reaction system was normal, and the process of becoming water-based was normal; during the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersions of Comparative Examples 2 and 5, the viscosity of the reaction system was normal, but the viscosity before becoming water-based was too high, resulting in difficulty in becoming water-based; during the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersions of Comparative Examples 3–4, the viscosity of the reaction system was too high, the reaction time was long, and the viscosity before becoming water-based was too high, resulting in difficulty in becoming water-based. Therefore, the properties of the aqueous dispersions obtained in Comparative Examples 2–5 cannot be tested.

[0112] Example 6: Preparation of waterborne coating composition

[0113] Under high-speed dispersing, a predetermined amount of coalescent was slowly added to the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion prepared in Example 1 above, followed by sequentially adding predetermined amounts of defoamer, wetting agent, leveling agent, and thickener, and dispersing for 20 minutes to prepare a waterborne coating composition.Comparative Example 6: Preparation of waterborne coating composition

[0114] Under high-speed dispersing, a predetermined amount of coalescent was slowly added to the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion prepared in Comparative Example 1 above, followed by sequentially adding predetermined amounts of defoamer, wetting agent, leveling agent, and thickener, and dispersing for 20 minutes to prepare an aqueous coating. Preparation of articles with coating

[0115] The waterborne coating compositions prepared according to the above Example 6 and Comparative Example 6 were each mixed with a specific amount of aqueous isocyanate crosslinking agent until uniform, then sprayed onto glass plates with a dry film thickness of 30 μm and dried at room temperature for 48 hours. Subsequently, the pendulum hardness, gloss, water resistance, and alcohol resistance of the resulting coatings were tested, with the results shown in Table 2

[0116] Table 2

[0117] The above results indicate that the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application is environmentally friendly, and the viscosity during its preparation can be controlled normally, meeting the requirement of low viscosity without sacrificing properties such as molecular weight. Its performance is comparable to that of aqueous polyurethanes synthesized by the conventional acetone method and prepolymer method, meeting the market demand for aqueous polyurethanes.

[0118] The inventors of the present application have also surprisingly found that, compared with other aqueous polyurethane resins commonly used in the coating market, the preparation of the aqueous acrylic / polyurethane dispersion according to the present application uses an acrylate reactive diluent having a secondary hydroxyl group. This diluent itself has low viscosity and greater steric hindrance, providing a better viscosity-reducing effect, and at the same time contains a secondary hydroxyl group, which can increase the hydroxyl content, thereby increasing the crosslinking density with the crosslinking agent. Therefore, the resulting coating exhibits excellent hardness and chemical resistance.
