The cation is derived from a monomeric or polymeric molecule that will generate an amidine moieity, a guanidine moieity or a biguanide moieity. The present invention provides an aqueous emulsion polymerization of fluorinated monomers including gaseous fluorinated monomers using a perfluoro ether surfactant as an emulsifier. The perfluoro ether surfactants correspond to formula (I)

A process for selective formation of ethanol from acetic acid includes contacting a feed stream containing acetic acid and hydrogen at an elevated temperature with catalyst comprising platinum and tin on a high surface area silica promoted with calcium metasilicate. Selectivities to ethanol of over 85% are achieved at 280° C. with catalyst life in the hundreds of hours.

A polymer composition comprises at least an ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer and at least one other polymer. The other polymer can be selected from a second ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer, an elastomer, a polyolefin, a polar polymer, and an ethylene/carboxylic acid interpolymer or ionomer thereof. The ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer is a block copolymer having at least a hard block and at least a soft block. The soft block comprises a higher amount of comonomers than the hard block. The block interpolymer has a number of unique characteristics disclosed here. Also provided are gaskets, bottle cap liners, and closures that comprise or obtained from a compositon comprising at least one ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer and at least one polyolefin. The gaskets are capable of compression sealing various containers, without contaminating the contents. Liquid containers particularly benefit from the use of the novel gasket materials disclosed herein.

A polycarboxy binder composition that contains a dextrin as a co-binder is provided. The dextrin co-binder may be a dextrin, a modified dextrin, a maltodextrin, or combinations thereof. The dextrin may be chemically modified. A pre-binder composition is formed that contains a polycarboxy polymer, a crosslinking agent, and optionally a catalyst. The polycarboxy polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer prepared from unsaturated carboxylic acids and may be modified to contain one or more vinyl compounds. The crosslinking agent may be a polyol that contains at least two hydroxyl groups. The pre-binder composition may be formed by admixing the polycarboxy polymer, the crosslinking agent, and optionally, the catalyst, in a mixing device. Dextrin may be added to the pre-binder composition in an amount of from 10-75% of the total binder composition. The dextrin binder composition may have a ratio of from approximately 90:10 to 25:75 pre-binder:dextrin co-binder.

A process is disclosed for forming a synthetic fiber including providing a first component of an aliphatic polyester polymer a second component of a multicarboxylic acid, mixing the first component aliphatic polyester polymer and the second component multicarboxylic acid to form an unreacted specified thermoplastic composition, and melt blending the unreacted specified thermoplastic composition in an extruder or a mixer. The second component multicarboxylic acid lubricates the extruder and provides a nucleating agent for crystallizing the specified thermoplastic composition to form a mean crystal size less than about 120 Angstroms. Fiber composed of the specified thermoplastic composition has a mean crystal size less than about 120 Angstroms. The fiber has a glass transition temperature (Tg) less than about 55 DEG C. In one aspect, a first component of polylactic acid and a second component of adipic acid provide synthetic fibers in a nonwoven structure used in a biodegradable and compostable disposable absorbent product for the absorption and removal of body fluids.

The invention relates to a passivating solution which is aqueous solution containing water-soluble molybdic compound, boric acid, water-soluble organic matter and silica sol, wherein the water-soluble organic matter is a mixture of alcohol and organic carboxylic acid. The invention also provides a surface treatment method for a galvanized material, which comprises the following step: enabling the passivating solution to be in contact with a galvanized material. A galvanized layer can be passivated by the contact between the passivating solution and the galvanized material so as to enable the galvanized material to have excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, the paint composition is chromium free and meets the requirements of a RoHS instruction.

A method of the preparation and utilization of polymerized alpha-hydroxycarboxylic-acid-coated proppants for gravel pack and removal of filter cake that was deposited by reservoir drilling fluid. In a preferred example, polyglycolic-acid-coated sand is used to replace conventional gravel pack sand typically used for gravel packing. Under downhole conditions, the acidic by-product generated from the hydration of polyglycolic-acid-coated sand can break down acid-soluble and/or acid-breakable components embedded in the filter cake. This reaction enhances the filter cake removal and the flow of hydrocarbon from the producing formation. The polyglycolic-acid-coated sand may be produced by polymerizing a glycolic acid with a natural or synthetic proppant like 20-40 mesh commercial sand, at temperatures of about 210° F. or higher.

The present invention provides a fluorinated surfactant having the general formula:

wherein R_f represents a partially or fully fluorinated aliphatic group optionally interrupted with one or more oxygen atoms, Q is CF₃ or F, R is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, G represents a carboxylic or sulphonic acid or salt thereof, t is 0 or 1 and n is 1, 2 or 3. The surfactant is particularly useful in polymerizing fluorinated monomers in an aqueous emulsion polymerization.

Preferred embodiments of the present invention relate to polymeric medical devices, such as stents. More particularly, the polymeric compositions disclosed herein comprise halogen-containing, tyrosine-derived diphenols, optionally in conjunction with other groups, such as dicarboxylic acids and/or poly(alkylene oxide), such that the medical devices made from these polymeric compositions are bioresorbable and inherently radiopaque, and exhibit physicomechanical properties consistent with the intended uses of such devices.

A golf ball includes a hot-molded product of a rubber composition comprising a base rubber composed of (a) 20-100 wt % of a polybutadiene having a high cis-1,4 content, a minimal 1,2 vinyl content, and a viscosity η of up to 600 mPa·s at 25° C. as a 5 wt % toluene solution, and satisfying a certain relationship between Mooney viscosity and polydispersity index Mw/Mn, in combination with (b) 0-80 wt % of another diene rubber, (c) an unsaturated carboxylic acid, (d) an organosulfur compound, (e) an inorganic filler, (f) an organic peroxide, and optionally, (g) an antioxidant. The hot-molded product has a difference in JIS-C hardness between the center and surface thereof of up to 15 units. The composition and hardness characteristics of the hot-molded product provide the golf ball with a solid comfortable feel upon impact and an excellent rebound.
