[0001] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 756,403, filed February 10, 2025, and titled “MULTI-FUNCTIONAL OTOSCOPE SPECULUM SYSTEMS, METHODS, AND DEVICES,” and U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 715,409, filed November 1 , 2024, and titled “MULTI-FUNCTIONAL OTOSCOPE SPECULUM SYSTEMS, METHODS, AND DEVICES,” the entireties of which are incorporated by reference herein.BACKGROUND1. Field
[0002] The present disclosure relates to the field of otoscope medical devices.2. Discussion of Related Art
[0003] Examining the ear is a fundamental aspect of pediatric healthcare, essential for routine checkups and diagnosing ear-related complaints. Cerumen often obstructs the view of the tympanic membrane during otoscopic examinations, posing challenges to accurate clinical assessments. Previous studies revealed that 29% of pediatric patients required earwax removal for adequate tympanic membrane visualization. Additionally, 57% of infants with otitis media required earwax removal to visualize the complete tympanic membrane. Current earwax removal methods are either time-consuming, ineffective, or not safe due to lack of visibility during cerumen removal.
[0004] It is with these observations in mind that the presently disclosed technology was conceived.SUMMARY
[0005] Systems, methods, and devices disclosed herein can address the aforementioned issues. For instance, an otoscope speculum device can include a speculum body having a first end with a first opening configured for mating with an otoscope head, and a second end with a second opening configured for insertion into an ear canal. The otoscope speculum device can also include an extension tool positioned at least partly within a slide channel of the speculum body. An actuator coupled to the extension tool can be movable to transition the otoscope speculum device between a first position and a second position. Furthermore, the sidewall opening can be formed at least partly into the elongated portion of the speculum body. Additionally, the extension tool can be slidable along a slide channel formed into a sidewall of the speculum body. The slide channel can be at least partly defined between an inner wall of the speculum body and an interior surface of the sidewall.2300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0010] In some instances, a method of conducting an ear exam with an otoscope can include connecting a first end of an otoscope speculum device to an otoscope head. The first end can include a first opening formed into a speculum body of the otoscope speculum device. The method can also include performing, with the otoscope in a first position being an observation position, an observation operation using a second opening formed into the speculum body. Furthermore, the method can include transitioning the otoscope between the first position and a second position being a tool utilization position by actuating an extension tool slidably coupled to the speculum body. Additionally, the method can include performing, with the otoscope in the second position, a tool operation by using an end of the extension tool.
[0011] In some examples, the observation operation can include an examination of an ear canal, and / or the tool operation can include a removal of ear wax from the ear canal. The transitioning of the otoscope between the first position and the second position can also include actuating an actuator protruding from an elongated stem of the extension tool. Moreover, the second opening of the speculum body can define an opening plane, and / or the end of the extension tool can extend further past the opening plane when the otoscope is in the tool utilization position than when the otoscope is in the observation position.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0026] It will be appreciated that for simplicity and clarity of illustration, where appropriate, reference numerals have been repeated among the different figures to indicate corresponding or analogous elements. In addition, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the examples described herein. However, it will be understood by those of ordinary skill in the art that the implementations described herein can be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, methods, procedures and components have not been described in detail so as not to obscure the related relevant feature being described. Also, the description is not to be considered as limiting the scope of the implementations described herein. The drawings are not necessarily to scale and the proportions of certain parts may be exaggerated to better illustrate details and features of the present technological concepts.
[0027] In some examples, the system disclosed herein includes an augmented design of an otoscope speculum, which includes a small movable piece used to remove ear wax while looking through the otoscope. This device can combine an ear wax curette and an otoscope speculum into one tool to provide safer, quicker, and more effective removal of ear wax and / or other foreign objects. Obstruction of the eardrum by wax can result in an incomplete examination and the technology disclosed herein can address these issues. For example, the multi-functional otoscope speculum device disclosed herein can be applied to any standard otoscope, and can be used as a regular otoscope tip in scenarios where no ear wax is present. Furthermore, in scenarios where ear wax is detected (e.g., during an observation operation), the otoscope speculum device can be used to remove the ear wax or simply move it out of the4300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771 way of the tympanic membrane visualization. This can include a tool utilization procedure in which an extension tool is operated with one finger such that the other hand can be free. During the tool utilization procedure, the user can benefit from being able to view the interior of the ear canal with the device while simultaneously attempting to remove the ear wax. Also, the disclosed technology can include one or more safety features to prohibit tympanic membrane rupture.
[0028] The disclosed device can enhance visualization of the complete tympanic membrane, thereby improving the accuracy of clinical evaluations, especially in children. For instance, the multi-functional otoscope speculum device disclosed herein can be safe, effective, efficient, intuitive, economical, and versatile. This device can be used by primary care pediatricians, emergency department physicians, urgent care physicians, advanced practice providers, pediatric specialists, geriatricians, and / or parents. As such, this technology can provide more efficient diagnostic tools for ear-related conditions.
[0029] FIGS. 1A and 1 B depict an example system 100 including a otoscope speculum device 102 with multiple functional configurations. The otoscope speculum device 102 can include an extension tool 104 slidably coupled to a body 106 of the otoscope speculum device 102. FIG. 1A depicts the otoscope speculum device 102 in a first position or configuration, which can be an observation position 108 with the extension tool 104 at least partly retracted. FIG. 1 B depicts the otoscope speculum device 102 in a second position or configuration, which can be a tool utilization position 110 with the extension tool 104 at least partly extended. Accordingly, the otoscope speculum device 102 can be a multi-functional otoscope speculum transitionable between multiple configurations for performing different functions. It is to be understood that, in the tool utilization position 110, the otoscope speculum device 102 can also be used to observe the interior of the ear canal simultaneously with using the extension tool 104.
[0030] In some examples, the otoscope speculum device 102 includes a speculum body 106 defined with a first opening 112 at a first end 114 and a second opening 116 at a second end 118. The first end 114 can include a base portion 120 of the speculum body 106. The base portion 120 can be a wider portion and / or can have a greater diameter than an elongated portion 122 of the speculum body 106, which can extend from the base portion 120 and terminates at the second opening 116 of the second end 118. In this way, the second opening 116 can have a smaller diameter than the first opening 112, and the speculum body 106 can have a tapered width from the base portion 120 to the end of the elongated portion 122. Accordingly, the second opening 116 at the second end 118 can be configured for insertion into an ear canal of a patient receiving an ear exam, and the first opening 112 can be configured for attachment to an otoscope head 124 of an otoscope device 126.5300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0031] In some instances, the speculum body 106 can have an outer sidewall 128 which defines an interior space 130 of the otoscope speculum device 102. The outer sidewall 128 can have a substantially circular cross-sectional profile. Furthermore, the outer sidewall 128 can include one or more sidewall openings 132. An actuator mechanism 134 coupled to the extension tool 104 can extend through the one or more sidewall openings 132. The one or more sidewall openings 132 can include a substantially rectangular opening with a first edge 136 and / or a second edge 138. The actuator mechanism 134 can include a slide button 140 attached to and / or protruding from an elongated extension stem 142 of the extension tool 104 through the sidewall opening 132. The slide button 140 can abut the first edge of the sidewall opening 132 when the otoscope 126 is in the first observation position 108. To actuate the otoscope speculum device 102 and transition the device between the observation position 108 and the tool utilization position 110, the slide button 140 can be slid away from the first edge 136 of the sidewall opening 132 and along a length dimension of the speculum body 106 towards the second edge 138 of the sidewall opening 132. The second edge 138 can act as a stop for the actuator mechanism 134. In this way the distance between the first edge 136 and the second edge 138 can correspond to an extension distance 144 of the extension tool 104 out the second opening 116.
[0032] In some examples, the extension tool 104 can be slidable within a slide channel 146 formed into the speculum body 106. The extension tool 104 can include an elongated extension stem 142. The actuator mechanism 134 can be coupled to and / or formed into a first end 148 of the elongated extension stem 142 (e.g., at the sidewall opening 132) and / or another position along the elongated extension stem 142. A second, distal end 150 of the extension tool 104, such as a tip 152 of the extension tool 104, can include a functional feature 154 of the extension tool 104. For instance, the functional feature 154 can include an angled tip 156, a curved tip, an increased or decreased thickness at the tip 152, a texture, an opening / hole 158, and / or other features to assist in object removal from the ear canal (e.g., foreign object removal, ear wax removal, and the like). In the first position (e.g., the observation position 108), the tip 152 of the extension tool 104 can be mostly or completely contained within the interior space 130 of the speculum body 106. In the second position (e.g., the tool utilization position 110) at least a portion of the extension tool 104 can pass through a plane defined by the second opening 116 and can extend a predetermined distance past the second opening 116.
[0033] In some scenarios, the transition between the first observation position 108 and the second tool utilization position 110 can include sliding the extension tool 104 along a slide pathway 160 (e.g., the slide channel 146) formed into the speculum body 106. In some examples, an outer surface of the outer sidewall 128 can have a tapered width which narrows6300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771 along a longitudinal axis 162 of the speculum body 106. The slide pathway 160 of the extension tool 104 can be substantially parallel to the outer sidewall 128, such that the extension tool 104 moves at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis 162. In this way the sliding direction of the extension tool 104 can be biased towards a center line (e.g., the longitudinal axis 162) of the speculum body 106. The slide pathway 160 can be formed against an interior surface 164 of the speculum body 106, and / or at least partly along an exterior surface 166 of the speculum body 106. Furthermore, the speculum body 106 can include one or more connector fins 168 (e.g., sawtooth connector fins) extending from the exterior surface 166 of the outer sidewall 128 adjacent to the first opening 112, which can assist in connecting and / or disconnecting the speculum body 106 to the otoscope head 124.
[0034] In some instances, some or all of the speculum body 106 and / or the extension tool 104 can be formed of a rigid material (e.g., plastic, glass, metal, etc.) a soft material (e.g., silicon), or combinations thereof. For instance, the entire multi-functional otoscope speculum device 102 can be formed of a soft rubber-like material for increased patient comfort during exams. Moreover, only a portion may be formed of the soft material, such as the elongated extension stem 142 and / or the tip 152. Alternatively, the extension tool 104 (e.g., and / or portions thereof) can formed of a rigid material with the speculum body 106 formed of the soft material.
[0035] FIGS. 2-4 depict example systems 100 including various embodiments of the multifunctional otoscope speculum device 102, which can be similar to, identical to, and / or can form at least a part of the system 100 depicted in FIG. 1 .
[0036] For instance, as shown in FIG. 2, the otoscope speculum device 102 can include a base portion 120 that has a first tapered width (e.g., with a first tapering angle), and an elongated portion 122 with a second tapered width (e.g., with a second tapering angle). The sidewall opening 132 can be formed into the first tapered width portion of the base portion 120, and the actuator mechanism 134 can include an extension arm 202 which extends through the sidewall opening 132. In the first position, the extension arm 202 can rest at a bottom of the sidewall opening 132, for instance, at a height where the width of the speculum body 106 transitions from tapered to constant. To move the otoscope speculum device 102 into the second position, the extension arm 202 can be lifted and / or pulled towards the second opening 116, causing the elongated extension stem 142 to slide along the slide channel 146. As depicted in FIG. 2, the slide channel 146 can include an elongated indentation 204 formed into the exterior surface 166 of the speculum body 106. Furthermore, the tip 152 of the extension tool 104 can omit the angle, and / or can be parallel to the elongated extension stem 142 of the extension tool 104.7300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0037] Turning to FIG. 3, the otoscope speculum device 102 can have a speculum body 106 with multiple segments 302. The multiple segments 302 can have a combination of different tapered width angles and / or constant widths. Furthermore, the slide channel 146 can be formed onto the outer surface of and can extend through multiple segments 302 of the speculum body 106. In some scenarios, the actuator mechanism 134 can include an extension 304 having multiple tabs 306, which can form a cross-shape.
[0038] FIG. 4 depicts an example system 100 including an otoscope speculum device 102 transitionable between multiple configurations. As shown in FIG. 4, the entire extension tool 104 assembly can be attached to the exterior surface 166 of the speculum body 106 and / or formed into indentions on the speculum body 106 (e.g., omitting any side openings 132). The actuator mechanism 134 can include a textured / gripping surface 402 which can include a sawtooth profile. Furthermore, the tip 152 of the extension tool 104 can include an angled portion 404 which, in the first position (e.g., the observation position 108) forms a portion of the lip 406 of the second opening 116. Alternatively, the extension tool 104 can omit the angled portion 404 of the tip 152.
[0039] FIG. 5 illustrates an example system 100 including a multi-functional otoscope speculum device 102 with an extension tool 104 having a functionalized tip 502.
[0040] As noted above, in some examples, the functionalized tip 502 can form an angle with an end 504 of the elongated extension stem 142 of the extension tool 104, such as an obtuse angle 506. For instance, the end of the elongated extension stem 142 can include a curved surface 508 or curved corner, and the functionalized tip 502 can include a protruding member 510 extending from the end 504 of the elongated extension stem 142. This protruding member 510 can include a flat top surface 512 with rounded corners 514 on either side. Furthermore, an end surface 516 of the protruding member 510 can include a concave curve 518, which at least partly aligns with a circumferential edge 520 of the second opening 116 of the speculum body 106 when the otoscope speculum device 102 is in the observation position 108. In this way, the functionalized tip 502 can avoid obstructing a visual pathway through the second opening 116. Moreover, the material comprising the protruding member 510 can be formed with one or more openings. For example, a circular hole 522 can be formed into the flat top surface 512 (e.g., centrally located), which can further aid in the ear wax removal process and / or visibility. Alternatively, the flat top surface 512 can omit any openings.
[0041] FIG. 6 depicts an example method 600 of conducting an ear exam with on otoscope 126, which can be performed by any of the system(s) 100 discussed herein regarding FIGS. 1-5 and 7A-8.8300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0042] For instance, at operation 602, the method 600 can connect a first end 114 of an otoscope speculum device 102 to an otoscope head 124 of an otoscope 126, the first end 114 including a first opening 112 formed into a speculum body 106 of the otoscope speculum device 102. At operation 604, the method 600 can perform, with the otoscope in a first position being an observation position 108, an observation operation using a second opening 116 formed into the speculum body 106. At operation 606, the method 600 can transition the otoscope between the first position and a second position being a tool utilization position 110 by actuating an extension tool 104 slidably coupled to the speculum body 106. At operation 608, the method 600 can perform, with the otoscope in the second position, a tool operation by using an end of the extension tool 104. Moreover, the observation operation can include an examination of an ear canal, and / or the tool operation can include a removal of ear wax from the ear canal. Additionally, the transitioning of the otoscope between the first position and the second position can include actuating an actuator protruding from an elongated stem 142 of the extension tool 104. Furthermore, the second opening 116 of the speculum body 106 can define an opening plane, and / or the end of the extension tool 104 can extend further past the opening plane when the otoscope is in the tool utilization position 110 than when the otoscope is in the observation position 108.
[0043] It is to be understood that the specific order or hierarchy of steps in the method(s) discussed throughout this disclosure are instances of example approaches and can be rearranged while remaining within the disclosed subject matter. For instance, any of the operations discussed throughout this disclosure may be omitted, repeated, performed in parallel, performed in a different order, and / or combined with any other of the operations discussed throughout this disclosure.
[0044] FIGS. 7A and 7B depict an example system 100 including additional embodiments of the otoscope speculum device 102 with multiple functional configurations. The otoscope speculum device 102 depicted in FIG. 7A can be configured for adult use and the otoscope speculum device 102 depicted in FIG. 7B can be configured for pediatric use.
[0045] In some examples, the otoscope speculum device 102 includes a functionalized tip 502 which can be a bent tip 702. The bent tip 702 can include an angled portion 704 which extends at least partly into a viewing pathway 706 of the speculum body 106. Additionally, the functionalized tip 502 can include the hole 158 formed into the material of the extension tool 104. With this configuration, a viewability through the viewing pathway 706 can be balanced with a removal functionality of the extension tool 104, optimizing the multi-functional characteristics of the otoscope speculum device 102. Furthermore, a diameter of the second opening 116 can correspond to a size of an adult ear canal. The outer sidewall 128 can have9300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771 a substantially circular cross-sectional profile 708, such that the viewing pathway 706 also has a circular cross-sectional profile.
[0046] In some examples, certain components of the extension tool 104 and / or the speculum body 106 can be formed of a flexible material to provide a bending functionality, such that the functionalized tip 502 can be controllably moved in an x-direction 710 and / or a y-direction 712 in addition to the sliding motion. For instance, an inner wall 714 which defines the slide channel 146 (e.g., at least partly aligned with the sidewall opening 132) can be a guide plate formed of a flexible plastic or another flexible material. The elongated extension stem 142 can also be formed of a flexible material. In addition to the sliding motion substantially in the z- direction 716 (e.g., and at an angle slightly in the x-direction 710), a force can be applied to the actuator mechanism 134, in the x-direction 710 to cause the inner wall 714 and / or the elongated extension stem 142 to bend in the x-direction 710 (e.g., towards the longitudinal axis 162). This can cause the extension tool 104 and / or the inner wall 714 to function as living hinges in the x-direction 710, such that the functionalized tip 502 can also move in the x- direction 710 during an object / ear wax removal procedure.
[0047] Additionally, the slide channel 146 can have space or a gap 718 in the y-direction 712 to provide controlled movement of the extension tool 104 in the y-direction 712. For instance, pressing on the actuator mechanisms 134 in a sideways or rotational direction can cause the elongated extension stem 142 to move and / or bend from side to side in the y-direction 712. The inner wall 714 can have a smoother surface which reduces the friction between the extension tool 104 and the inner wall 714, which can enable this sideways movement of 720 the elongated extension stem 142. Moreover, the actuator mechanism 134 can include a curved gripping surface 722 (e.g., with a “scoop” shape) that fits the finger of the user and / or provides angled surfaces for receiving the controlled movement forces in multiple directions.
[0048] In some scenarios, these components can provide for controlled movement of the extension tool with the functionalized tip 502 in every direction — the z-direction 716 (e.g., via a sliding force), the x-direction 710 (e.g., via a pressing force) and the y-direction 712 (e.g., via a sideways or rotational force). As such, the otoscope speculum device 102 can have improved capabilities for removing objects / ear wax from the ear canal, while maintaining viewability through the viewing pathway.
[0049] In some examples, the otoscope speculum device can include a locking stop 724 to prevent unintended movement of the extension tool 104. For instance, the extension tool 104 can include a locking member 726 extending from a bottom 728 of the actuator mechanism 134. Furthermore, a locking channel 730 (e.g., a groove) can be formed into the outer sidewall 128 for receiving the locking member 726, for example, at an interior surface 732 of the outer10300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771 sidewall 128. The locking channel 730 and the locking member 726 can be shaped and sized such that a friction-fit keeps the locking member 726 secured in the locking channel 730 until a force is applied to the actuator mechanism 134 to pull the locking member 726 free from the locking channel 730 and cause the extension tool 104 to move. Moreover, one or more tracks and / or grooves can be formed into the interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128 and / or the inner wall 714 to keep the extension tool 104 aligned and to prevent the extension tool 104 from falling out of the sidewall opening 132. Additionally, a groove can be formed into the interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128 along the elongated portion 122 of the speculum body 106 to nest the elongated extension stem 142, such that the obstruction of the viewing pathway 706 caused by the extension tool 104 can be reduced.
[0050] In some instances, the sidewall opening 132 can have dimensions and / or placement on the speculum body 106 to optimize functionality of the otoscope speculum device 102. For instance, a length dimension 734, defined between the first edge 136 and the second edge 138, can determine the extension distance 144 of the tip 152 beyond the circumferential edge 520 of the second opening 116. In some scenarios, this distance can be between 3 mm and 8 mm (e.g., 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 7 mm, or 8 mm). The length dimension 734 of the sidewall opening 132 can be configured such that the extension distance 144 is great enough to facilitate removal of ear wax and / or foreign objects from the ear canal, while being small enough to prevent puncturing of the ear drum, which can improve the safety of the ear wax / object removal procedure. Furthermore, an otoscope speculum device 102 configured for use with adults (e.g., as shown in FIG. 7A) can have a greater length dimension 734 of the sidewall opening 132 than an otoscope speculum device 102 configured for use with children (e.g., as shown in FIG. 7B). Additionally, a position of the sidewall opening 132 and / or the actuator mechanism 134 on the speculum body 106 can have a spacing distance 736 from the second first edge 136 of the sidewall opening 132 to the first end 114 of the speculum body 106. The spacing distance 736 can be small enough to provide one-handed finger access to the actuator mechanism 142 when the user is gripping the otoscope device 126, while also being large enough such that the actuator mechanism 142 and / or the extension tool 104 does not interfere with the mating connection between the otoscope speculum device 102 and the otoscope head 124. Furthermore, a distance between the second edge 138 of the sidewall opening 132 and the second opening 116 can be optimized such that there is enough space to move the actuator mechanism 134 without running the user’s finger into the ear canal of the patient, such as between 6 mm and 14 mm (e.g., 6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 11 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm, 14 mm, and so forth).
[0051] In some examples, as depicted in FIG. 7B, the functionalized tip 502 can include a curved tip 738. For instance, the extension tool 104 can include a transition point 740 where11300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771 a straight portion of the elongated extension stem 142 transitions into the curved tip 738. The curved tip 738 can initially, at the transition point 740, curve away from the longitudinal axis 162, and / or can press against the interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128. Then, curved tip 738 can curve back towards the longitudinal axis 162, forming a scoop-shape. By pressing against the interior surface 732, the curved tip 738 can create a gap 742 between the elongated extension stem 142 and the interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128. Upon actuating the actuator mechanism 134 and extending the extension tool 104 out the second opening 116, the gap 742 can close such that the curved tip 738 extends at least partly outside the circumferential edge 520 of the second opening 116. In this way, the viewing pathway 706 for the otoscope speculum device can be further improved by reducing an obstruction caused by the extension tool 104.
[0052] FIG. 8 depicts an example system 100 including another embodiment of the otoscope speculum device 102 with a multi-type otoscope connector 802.
[0053] In some examples, the multi-type otoscope connector 802 of the otoscope speculum device 102 can include one or more attachment connectors 804 for removably coupling to different types of otoscope head 124. The otoscope speculum device 102 can include a plurality of different attachment connectors 804, such that the otoscope speculum device 102 is configured to attach to a plurality of different types of otoscope 126. For instance, the otoscope speculum device 102 can include the connector fin(s) 168 extending from the outer sidewall 128 around the first end 114. The connector fin(s) 168 can be a first attachment connector of the plurality of different attachment connectors 804, and can configure the otoscope speculum device 102 for attachment with a Welch Allyn® otoscope 806. For instance, the connector fin 168 can rotatably mate with a circumferential groove 808 formed into the otoscope head 124 of the Welch Allyn® otoscope 806.
[0054] Moreover, the otoscope speculum device 102 can include an inner protrusion 810 as a second attachment connector of the plurality of different attachment connectors 804. The inner protrusion 810 can extend from the interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128 into the interior space 130 of the speculum body 106. The inner protrusion 810 can be configured for insertion into a groove 812 formed onto the speculum receiving tip 814 of the otoscope head 126, for instance, of a MacroView® Welch Allyn® otoscope 816. As such, the two different connector types can facilitate coupling to the different types of otoscope heads 124. This multi-type otoscope connector 802 can include additional grooves and / or protrusions for connecting to other types of otoscopes, such as a SCIAN® otoscope, a Zyrev® otoscope, and / or combinations thereof. Furthermore, it is to be understood that, in some scenarios, the otoscope speculum device 102 can have a single type of connector to particularize that otoscope speculum device 102 for a single type of otoscope head 124.12300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0055] FIGS. 9A-9F depict an example system 100 including additional embodiments of the otoscope speculum device 102 with multiple functional configurations. FIG. 9A depicts elevation views 902 of the otoscope speculum device 102 omitting (but configured for use with) the extension tool 104. FIG. 9B depicts elevation views 902 of the otoscope speculum device 102 including the extension tool 104. FIG. 9C depicts a bottom view 904 of the otoscope speculum device 102 including the extension tool 104. FIG. 9D depicts a cross- sectional top view 906 of the otoscope speculum device 102 including the extension tool 104. FIG. 9E depicts a top view 908 of the otoscope speculum device 102 including the extension tool 104. FIG. 9F depicts a perspective view 910 of the extension tool 104.
[0056] In some examples, as illustrated in FIGS. 9A, 9B, and 9E, the otoscope speculum device 102 can have the elongated extension stem 142 at least partly recessed into the outer sidewall 128 when in the retracted position. For instance, the outer sidewall 128 can include an end channel 912 that extends from the second opening 116 towards the sidewall opening 132 with a portion of material 914 of the outer sidewall 128 separating the end channel 912 from the sidewall opening 132. In other words, the end channel 912 can be a cutout portion of the outer sidewall 128 at the second end 116 for receiving a distal portion 915 of the elongated extension stem 142. Moreover, the elongated extension stem 142 can include a main extension portion 917 that extends from the slide button 140, and two bends (e.g., a first bend 916 and a second bend 918) between the main extension portion 917 and the distal portion 915. The first bend 916 and the second bend 918 can be in opposite directions (e.g., and / or of approximately similar or identical magnitudes) such that the distal portion 915 extends at a substantially similar angle as the main extension portion 917 but along a different plane than the main extension portion 917 (e.g., a plane aligned with the outer sidewall 128). In this way, the distal portion 915 can extend, at the second bend 918, into the end channel 912 when the otoscope speculum device 102 is in a retracted position. As such, the functional end (e.g., the functionalized tip 502) of the extension tool 104 can be hidden when the extension tool 104 is in the retracted position. Also, the length and curve of the functionalized tip 502 can be increased with this configuration.
[0057] Furthermore, in some cases, the outer sidewall 128 can include an outer layer 919 and an inner layer 920. The outer layer 919 can include the sidewall opening 132 and the end channel 912. The inner layer 920 can begin at a first location 922 below the sidewall opening 132 and can terminate and / or blend back into the outer layer 918 at a second location 924 above the first edge 136 of the sidewall opening 132, such as at the second edge 138 of the sidewall opening 132. The inner layer 920 can provide the inner wall 714 which positions the slide button 140 in place and / or prevents the slide button 140 from falling into the interior space 130.13300316632Attorney Docket No.: UTSDP4339WO-1001366771
[0058] In some situations, the extension tool 104 can include an outer rim 926 disposed around the slide button 140. The outer rim 926 can be positioned on the outer surface 928 of the outer sidewall 128 and / or can have a width dimension greater than a width dimension of the sidewall opening 132. Furthermore, the outer rim 926 can be coupled to the slide button 140 at only a portion, such as a lower portion 930 of the slide button 140. In this way, the outer rim 926 can assist in securing the extension tool 104 to the body 106 of the otoscope speculum device 102 while providing an ability for the slide button 104 and / or the elongated extension stem 142 to be bent / flexed away from the outer rim 926 due to the gap 932 between a portion of the outer rim 926 and the slide button 140, for instance, when the slide button 140 is pushed to cause the elongated extension stem 142 to moves in the x-direction 710.
[0059] Additionally, as shown in FIGS. 9C and 9D, the extension tool 104 can include one or more inner protrusions 934 extending from an underside of the slide button 140, fitting into an indentation 936 in an interior surface 732 of the outer sidewall 128. The inner protrusions 934 can be positioned opposite from the outer rim 926 relative to the outer sidewall 128 such that, together, the inner protrusions 934 and the outer rim 926 sandwich the outer sidewall 128 to secure the extension tool 104 in place and / or at least partially limit movement of the extension tool 104 relative to the body 106. With this arrangement the elongated extension stem 142 of he extension tool 104 can provide a cantilever action via controlled bending / flexing initiated by a user while maintaining an unobstructed view through the interior space 130 of the otoscope speculum device 102.
[0060] In some examples, as shown in FIG. 9F, the extension tool 104 can include the slide button 140 formed by a curved sheet 938 (e.g., or a flat sheet) of material with an underside ridge 940. The underside ridge 940 can protrude from the convex side 942 (e.g., the underside) of the curved sheet 938 and can extend from at least a top edge of the curved sheet 938 to a bottom edge. Also, the underside ridge 940 can have dimensions for mating with a corresponding indention or opening formed into the body 106 of the otoscope speculum device 102. In some cases, the examples of the otoscope speculum device 102 disclosed herein can be optimized for large-scale manufacturing and shipping, for instance, with improved stackability.
